President’s Foreword Since leaving the Nottingham College of Art, my career has been wholly involved in art and design.

The last twenty years I’ve devoted my time to painting and printmaking – mainly depicting the sea and ships both from aboard and on land.

For the 76th year, the Society celebrates marine art in the UK. It is wonderful to see the diversity and quality of work entered by members and non-members every year. It is always a shame that gallery space precludes more work to be displayed. Since the Marine Society is completely subject based, I feel it is fitting to show work which explores different media in our exhibition.

The last eighteen months have been such a difficult time for both artists and galleries. Plein Air artists have been restricted in their seaside visits, art shop closures have made obtaining materials problematic as has framing availability. This exhibition displays the determination of artists around Britain.

Our thanks go, as always to the selection and hanging committees.

Their diligence and efforts are evident on the walls of the galleries.

Thanks also to the prize givers and all our sponsors for their support.

Lastly our grateful thanks to the staff at Mall Galleries without whose efforts this exhibition would not have been possible.

Prizes and Awards

The RSMA New Generation Award

The Artist Magazine Award The winner will be interviewed for a feature in The Artist magazine.

Baltic Exchange Award For an outstanding work related to the maritime industry, selected by the Society’s President and the Chairman of the Baltic Exchange.

Including works related to trade, ship building, safety at sea/the crew, the RNLI or NCI. The Baltic is an historic membership organisation at the heart of the international shipping industry, providing services relied upon by shipping markets worldwide. Value £2,000.

The Charles Pears Award For an outstanding work by a non-member. Presented in memory of Charles Pears, founding member and first President. Value £500.

The Classic Boat Award The winner will take home a handsome, hand-crafted sculpture by Astins Sailing Sculptures, given for the most atmospheric depiction of a classic boat.

The Kenneth Denton Award For a work on the theme “The Sea in all its Moods”. Made possible by the generosity of RSMA member Kenneth Denton. Value £500.

The Murray’s Commercial Fishing Award Two prizes for works in any medium depicting commercial fishing.

First Prize £500, Second Prize £100.

The RSMA Award for the Best Small Painting For a work in any medium measuring no more than 30 cm (12 inches) along the longest dimension unframed. Made possible by the generosity of a Life Member. Value £300.

The RSMA New Generation Award £250 plus a feature in the catalogue for an artist aged 35 or under.

The Topbond Marine Award For works depicting marine engineering or construction activities in harbours, estuaries or marine waters within the UK. Value £250.

The Winsor & Newton Oil Prize £250 worth of Winsor & Newton materials for a notable oil painting.

Ollie Tuck Fresh from the Fishmongers Oil 35 x 40 cm £675 Winner of The RSMA New Generation Award

Born in 1992, Ollie studied fine art foundation at UAL Chelsea School of Art and went on to study History of Art at the University of Nottingham. She continued to practice oil painting throughout her studies before pursuing a career as an artist after her graduation.

Her paintings are a response to the beauty of colour and light she finds in everyday subjects. Her recent works combine traditional still life subjects with a contemporary use of colour and pattern in highly decorative, joyful compositions.

Ollie first exhibited with the Society last year, and was awarded Mall Galleries’ Best Figurative Painting Prize at the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize competition earlier this year.
