President’s Foreword

On behalf of the Council and Members of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 212th exhibition.

If I had to come up with a promotional slogan for this year’s exhibition then it might be Invest in the Future because that is what the RI is continually endeavouring to do.

As with many societies that have existed as long as ours, our longevity relies on our ability to encourage artists who share in our values to join us and carry on our traditions.

But it should also be recognised that these traditions will develop and change over time. The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours was founded in the 19th Century, primarily to combat the prejudice that prevented the acceptance of watercolour as a recognised painting medium. And over the ensuing period it has certainly contributed to this endeavour.

But times and technology have changed immeasurably in the last 193 years, which is why, while many of our Members stay close to the sublime traditions of watercolour painting, others push the boundaries further, employing water based mixed media techniques using the huge range of new and innovative art materials which are now available.

And this looking to the future is, we feel, as it should be.

This year the RI have made some amendments to the conditions of entry to our annual exhibition to show that we recognise the fact that artists in water based painting and indeed many younger artists in this field are ‘pushing the boundaries’.

Also this year we have introduced a new award to help encourage those who we hope will be RI Members in the future.

The RI Young Artist Award is a prize of £1,000 presented for a painting by an artist of 25 years or under. We look forward to presenting this award for the first time this year.

Once again this year we have followed the tradition of inclusivity upon which the RI was founded, with half of the exhibited works being by Members of the RI and the other half by non-members.

The competition for selection was tougher than usual this year, as we had our highest ever number of works entered in our nonmember submission.

We had paintings from many established watercolourists and artists working in water-based media from around the world as well as from the UK, and from many young and emerging artists.

The talent displayed by all these contributors is a constant inspiration to our Selection Committee, and we thank them all for their valuable contribution to our exhibition.

Also we currently have the highest number, that we can remember, of candidates applying to join the RI, and we hope that many of them will be elected as RI Members this year.

Of course we also congratulate the four new RI Members elected last year: Roger Aslin, Kate Bentley, Paul Talbot-Greaves and Florence Yuqing, and we include a brief introduction to them and their work on page 5.

For the first time last year the RI introduced a schools competition in celebration of the Coronation of our Honorary Member, His Majesty King Charles III.

The RI Coronation Award had its first prizewinners announced recently and you can read more about this inaugural competition on the next page.

This year, we are delighted once again to have been lent two watercolour paintings by His Majesty King Charles III and we thank him for his continuing support.

Our RI Council and Members also send His Majesty our very best wishes and look forward to a time in the near future when he will be able to return fully to public life.

We thank all our sponsors who for another year have generously provided our awards and prizes with a total value of over £7,500.

Once again this year our sponsor Winsor & Newton will hold their popular A Celebration of Watercolour event during our exhibition, as well as providing the prizes for our popular Paint with RI Members event on the evening of April 9th, for which booking will open soon.

We thank all the staff at the Mall Galleries, whose help and assistance enable us to put on this inspiring exhibition.

And, last but by no means least, my thanks

2

go to our RI Council Members, for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the year, without which our 212th exhibition could not take place.

We hope you enjoy the show.

This year we are honoured to have the broadcaster and journalist Jon Snow open our 212th RI Exhibition. While most of you will know much about Jon’s enormously varied and fascinating career, as the longest running presenter of Channel 4 News, as a podcaster with ‘Snowcast’ and as an author (‘The State of Us’, his fascinating critique of our nation over the last five decades was published last year), perhaps fewer of you will know that Jon is also a very keen watercolourist.

So perhaps we can ask Jon to cast his perceptive and even critical eye over the work that we present in our 212th RI Exhibition this year.

This new annual competition was opened on May 6 2023 in celebration of the Coronation of Our Honorary Member His Majesty King Charles III.

It is open to young artists in the 11-18 age group working in watercolour or in water-based media.

In our inaugural competition we received some fantastic entries from a diverse range of schools, art clubs, community groups and individual students and the finalists were chosen by a panel of judges made up of RI Members.

The Winner of the competition receives a prize of £300 and the two Runners-up each win a prize of £150 worth of art materials, and these three winners are invited to be awarded their prizes at the Private View and official opening of the 212th Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the Mall Galleries in London.

Certificates of Merit are awarded to the following entrants:

Amber I. ‘River’ Heathfield School

Chrissy B. ‘Kate’ More House School

Francesca R. ‘Tropical Fish Diptych’ Barton Court

Issy C. ‘Fresh Meat’. Hulme Grammar School

Iva A. ‘London Townhouse’ Wimbledon High School

Maia D. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Barton Court

Nephele H. ‘Pomegranate’ More House School

Stella F.Y. ‘Submerged’ Wimbledon High School

Thea C. ‘Partytime’ Hulme Grammar School

The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours thanks all of the young artists and their schools for their enthusiasm and their support which made this first inaugural exhibition such a success.

A brief history of the RI

During its 193 years, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours has much to be proud of, not least, its sustained association with the British Royal Family. By the time that the New Society of Painters in Water Colours mounted their inaugural exhibition in 1832, it had secured as patrons, Queen Adelaide, her daughter, the future Queen Victoria, Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex and H.R.H. Victoria Mary Louise, Duchess of Kent. Queen Adelaide received watercolour lessons from Henry Bryan Ziegler (1793-1874) and Victoria became an enthusiastic watercolour practitioner, taking lessons from William Leighton Leitch (1804-1883), who, for twenty years, was Vice-President of the RI.

Henry of Battenburg. And on 20th August, 1888 at Osborne House, Linton presented Queen Victoria with a Jubilee gift of 75 watercolours by RI members and associates. Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter, was also created an Honorary Member on 10th May, 1886.

Joseph Powell (1780 - 1834) First President of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, now the RI

The RI Gallery in Piccadilly (now home to BAFTA) in the 19th Century

Queen Victoria and her devoted Prince Albert compiled numerous albums of prints, watercolours and photographs, the most significant being nine volumes of watercolours, which they put together between 1840 and 1861. His Royal Highness Prince Albert became a frequent visitor to the Institute’s exhibitions and was often tempted to buy – in April, 1842 one of his purchases cost 200 guineas (to put this into context, at that time a house maid’s salary was around £16 a year). During the 1850s Prince Albert rarely missed the annual shows and was often accompanied by other members of the family, including the Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, Prince Alfred, Princess Alice and Princess Beatrice.

Queen Victoria’s fifth daughter, H.R.H. Princess Beatrice was a keen watercolourist and received lessons from Edward Henry Corbould (1815-1905), who, in 1851, was appointed ‘instructor of historical painting to the Royal Family’. On 19th July, 1885 Beatrice was elected an Honorary RI and Sir James Linton (RI President) presented the Princess with an album of drawings by RI members in recognition of her approaching marriage to Prince

Most of the Royal Family have had a mutual interest in watercolours and it was not unusual during the 19th century for the Royals to visit the RI exhibition in large groups – for example, on 9th March, 1891 The Prince and Princess of Wales were accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, the Duke and Duchess of Teck and the Princess Victoria of Teck. Three days later, on the recommendation of the Prince of Wales, The Empress Frederick and the Princess Margaret visited the exhibition.

Within three months of Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, King Edward VII consented to grant his patronage to the RI and to sign the diplomas of newly elected members. Like his Royal predecessors King Edward made purchase at the RI exhibitions, including Reve de Fleurs by Charles Prosper Sainton (1861-1914). Royal Patronage continued under George V and George VI.

Following the death of George VI on 6th February, 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II notified the RI that she would continue the Royal Patronage, a position she held until her death. An avid watercolourist himself, King Charles III has, since 1981, exhibited, as he says, “rather hesitantly”, his landscapes with the RI and in 1984 was elected an Honorary Member. In his Foreword for the book Then and Now: Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (published in 2019), the King recognises the long, endearing relationship his family have had with the RI. Long may it continue.

Welcoming our New Members

My painting explores two key areas – the figure and the urban environment –and is influenced by my continuing interest in film and television. My key focus is how people interact with the contemporary environment. I show urban life in dramatic colour and shade by using a highly contrasting palette.

My love of the human form, pattern, chiaroscuro and theatricality is evident. My fascination with materials, mark-making and layering  fuels my passion for experimentation. This, coupled with decades of painting en plein air and life sessions all helps in resolving a narrative to my paintings and themes slowly emerge.

My work explores the excitement of the landscape in an abstract sense. I don’t aim to paint popular views, instead I like to seek out design elements of colour combinations, interesting shapes, and contrasting values, and I bring them to attention through the use of light, usually woven into a coherent story that connects with the viewer on an emotional level. I find the majority of my subjects in the Pennine and Northern landscapes where I live.

In watercolour, I dive into the subtle harmony of hues, aiming to capture the natural beauty in the human form. Through portraiture, I intend to evoke emotions, forging an intimate connection between the viewer and the subject, where the language of the soul is spoken through the rich palette of skin and flesh.

Welcoming this year's submission from non-members

“It is, therefore, solely by the talents displayed in his Works, that the Artist can claim any preference and that the unfriended man of merit, who is unknown to the Public, will receive equal attention, and will have a fair opportunity of publicly displaying his Works... It is only upon the broad and simple principle of personal merit that this Society is founded, and its Regulations formed…” from the RI’s original Mandate of 1832.

As you can see from the quote above, the RI continues to see the importance of an open exhibition where work by members and non-members can be shown together in equal numbers, and this tradition has been carried forward once again in 2024. Our submission this year was the largest that the RI has ever received and given the high quality of work received, the competition for space in our annual exhibition was tougher than usual.

We give our sincere thanks to all of the artists who submitted paintings this year.
