A Note on Pastels The pastel medium has a distinguished record covering nearly three centuries: it has been used by a succession of famous artists whose work is available for reference, which proves how important pastel is as a means of artistic expression.

Pastel has no boundaries and there is no limit to the scale on which it may be used. Pastel is of remarkable durability: it neither fades, darkens nor cracks and only requires for its permanent preservation, the ordinary care given to every work of art. Pastel always retains its freshness.

The Pastel Society held its first Exhibition in the Galleries of the Royal Institute, Piccadilly in 1899. This exhibition included works from ten artists who were already members of the Royal Academy. In 1970 The Pastel Society became incorporated with the Federation of British Artists. In 1988 The Pencil Society was amalgamated into The Pastel Society.

The Society can boast many illustrious past members and exhibitors such as Sickert, Whistler, Degas, Dame Laura Knight and more recently Dame Paula Rego, Tom Phillips and Gillian Ayres, to name but a few.

President’s Foreword The Pastel Society Exhibition is a showcase of works created in pastel, pencil, chalk and charcoal. The diverse nature of the dry medium is limitless. The elected members and those chosen from open submission all share a passion for working in a dry media.

It is an honour to have been elected President of The Pastel Society and a huge responsibility; I hope to be able to sustain the prestigious and proud history. We have a dedicated Council who give their time freely and I thank them and all the members for their support.

It’s been a dynamic year with a series of highly successful workshops in the Summer and the largest entry for the Annual Exhibition in its history. The Selection Committee has had a difficult task choosing work for a limited space and we are aware this leads to many disappointments particularly for artists sending work from overseas.

On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank our sponsor Derwent for their continuing support. Derwent’s relationship with the society has gone from strength to strength and they have helped enormously with the society’s campaign to attract submissions for the exhibition. The work is of a very high standard and very deserving of the wonderful prizes. A particular highlight is the Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Award for £5,000, this being awarded to a young artist under the age of 35 years. Needless to say we would like to offer our thanks to all the Award Givers.

We are very fortunate to have the Rt Hon Michael Portillo, journalist, broadcaster, former Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and Chairman of the Federation of British Artists, agree to open our Exhibition and present the awards. Michael appears regularly on Radio 4’s ’Moral Maze’ and BBC1’s ‘This Week’ and has made highly praised documentaries including the wonderful ‘Great British’ and ‘Continental Railway Journeys’. We thank him.

Again we would also like to thank the Director and staff of the FBA for their invaluable advice and enthusiasm for the Pastel Society.

To conclude I would like to express my thanks to all members and congratulate non-members on partaking in this unique exhibition. Finally, to you, the viewer, in these uncertain times - enjoy the paintings, be inspired and perhaps take one home with you.

Coffee Morning for Art Lovers Thursday 23 Feb, 10am to 12 noon Inspired by The Pastel Society Annual Exhibition, the Mall Galleries’ Coffee Morning this month will include a still life display of early spring flowers and Ann Wilkinson PS will be on hand to offer advice and encouragement whilst also leading by example and producing her own still life pastel painting.

Cover Artist: Sheila Goodman PS Watermeadows - Winter’s Glow by Sheila Goodman PS is featured on the front cover of this exhibition catalogue.

Here, Sheila sheds some light on her inspiration and working methods:

On location I now like to use Caran d’Ache Neocolour and Derwent Inktense which can provide washes of colour and textured marks. Time in the studio is more relaxed, and a thoughtful process can begin.

“I started to work with pastel 30 years ago after taking some on holiday for sketching. A quest for knowledge began. I enjoy the immediate response I get from pastel, the colour consistency and textures. It has a softness yet can be very powerful.

I have always loved being in the natural beauty of the countryside where the quality of light can change the mood in an instant. I live near to watermeadows and forest so these are subjects I paint quite often. The changing seasons and light can alter the view tremendously.

Although my paintings are based on what I see, I like to emphasise contrasts, colour, and shapes, which can create atmosphere and lead to more unpredictable results.”

I tend to work on various supports and my choice often depends on the texture and underpainting I want to use.

Each subject seems to suggest an appropriate surface and I also like to experiment so I spend time before painting - thinking about the general colour and tone of the landscape.

Zsuzsi Roboz was a distinguished member of The Pastel Society with a gift for portraiture. Zsuzsi generously bequeathed an Award of £5,000, running since 2015.

The Alfred Teddy Smith and Zsuzsi Roboz Award is designated in Trust to recognise Zsuzsi’s enormous contribution to draughtsmanship. The Pastel Society is proud to be associated with this lasting legacy that bears her name.

The winner of the inaugural prize in 2015 was Mike Clapton with his charcoal portrait, Take Care (pictured below, left) and in 2016, Péter Mátyási’s Untitled00432_ November 7. Power Plant (pictured below, right) won the prize.

This year’s Award will be presented to a young artist, aged 35 or under, for their traditional skills used in an original way, at the opening of the Annual Exhibition.

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award, First Prize: Steven King with Matisse’s words in my head, I sketch the aeroplanes changing direction on the horizon approaching Zaventem, orientating themselves on invisible flight paths towards their destination. A pigeon waits absently on the ledge opposite. A second lands alongside and they occupy themselves with checks and flight contingencies. After sketching the little pilots a few times, I hide my cigarette end amongst the roots of a shrub in a tailored window box that looks as though trimmed by an accountant for a Dalwood collage.

The colour of the sun-baked painted plaster and corrugated clay roof tiles of the buildings on the other side of the avenue begin to blend with the evening light and residual heat from the day, electric brightness, sticky like pigment mixed in too little water. As the sunlight retreats down the narrow avenue the deep shadow of the chimney stack opposite rotates like a clock hand towards night. The cooling glass, roof tar and tiles shine in grey shades. The factory buildings behind sore with sunburn.

I have always been fascinated by a Matisse quote; ‘A man trying to track an aeroplane across the sky with a searchlight does not trace the same passage through the sky as the pilot does.’ An intriguing work idea. I write it on the wall wherever I work.

Tracking the hills back to the sky I note the lunacy of the land’s division by hedgerow borders and the sorry colour of overworked, trodden, thinning fields made languid one by one, resting in shade. A lone cloud looms aimlessly, forgetting its form, and power cables become indistinguishable from each other in the light. I collect my observed, obscured, and invented details and fill in the Belgian landscape, tangles of differently weighted lines overlaid flat, all depicted at once, like a topographical argument between striding Nicholson and soaring Lanyon.

The Pastel Society Catalogue Award, Second Prize: Robert Strange generate something that is greater than its individual parts; a drawing of synergy.

The colour pencil drawing is undertaken using Prisma Colour pencils on 300gms hot pressed Daler-Rowney watercolour paper. 450 dice were collected from a range of peculiar places and squashed into a glass-fronted box. Unfortunately, they fell down every time the box was moved, so each individual die had to be glued into position. The arrangement was drawn direct from life taking over 100 hours.

450 discarded, forgotten, abandoned dice that have been gathered together and reassembled in an old box to give them a new purpose and meaning. As individual die they were rolled and played with, their singular mundane purpose, to select a number. Now, collectively, shoulder to shoulder they are transformed, rejuvenated into something far more interesting, colourful and mesmerising.

This drawing is one in a series of ‘Squashed’ drawings where ordinary, colourful but discarded objects are collected and trapped in a box for later exploitation.

Other drawings include golf tees, ties, sweet wrappers, buttons, beads and playing cards.

This work represents a theme of making the ordinary, extra-ordinary and special; that life doesn’t end when we complete one phase of our existence, that we can find purpose and meaning even when we too are discarded and forgotten.

450 limited dice that produce an endless random set of numbers that some people will forever endeavour to search for a sequence; 450 ordinary dice that invite you to view them as special and exciting.
