Jeannette Hayes Green Dawning Pastel on paper 61 x 92 cm £2,500 Jeannette Hayes's atmospheric and energetic patchwork compositions are inspired by emotional responses to the landscape. A heightened sense of geological vigour and vitality is brought to life as Hayes immerses one in patches of colour and mark marking. Hayes's work exhibited is based on the countryside surrounding The Vale of the White Horse in Oxfordshire, near to where her studio is located. In this impressionistic view of the world, Hayes also reveals a form of psychological mapping, combining the exterior physical work with an interior landscape of the subconscious and shows how the two are intrinsically linked; memory, perspective, sensation - all these ideas inform her work in enlivening balances of colour and structure. Bath Contemporary Born in Sweden 1962 Royal Berkshire College of Art (Foundation Studies) 1981-1982 B.A (Hons) Fine Art / Painting at Kingston University 1982-85 Member of the Pastel Society (2002-) Member of the Chelsea Art Society (2003-) Former Governor of the Federation of British Artists President of the Pastel Society (2016-2021)

President’s Foreword This is the last exhibition that I will head as President of the Pastel Society, and it does not seem 5 years since I took up the post. I hope to continue to exhibit as a member for some time but will be passing the President’s baton on from September. We have seen the arrival of a dynamic group of new members in the past 5 years, and I am looking forward to seeing even more in the future given the high calibre of candidates. Look out for the candidates for membership for this year.

Welcome to the 127th Annual Exhibition of the Pastel Society. Our Exhibition theme is ‘Direct Touch’. Although dry media are often the ones employed by artists to put down first ideas, they are not celebrated enough as media for finished paintings. Artists can work quickly, directly and expressively in pastel and charcoal without having to mix paints. Many artists forget that the enjoyment of touch is a wholly human attribute that cannot be replicated in the digital world and the realm of artificial intelligence. It is always exciting to see what new works are submitted for inclusion in our Annual Exhibition and this year we had over 1,400 submissions from which we chose this exciting exhibition. To celebrate the fact that the Royal Drawing School (RDS) encourages their artists to use a large variety of dry media in new and unusual ways as part of their artistic education we invited, for the first time, the RDS to put forward works by recent graduates for inclusion in the exhibition. Three works were selected which we believe show the imagination and use of dry materials that the RDS nurtures. In addition, we awarded a prize for the work we admired the most. We were pleased that Fraser Scarfe, the Head of Education Delivery at the RDS, accepted our invitation to open this year’s exhibition. Our individual invited artist is Kelvin Okafor, who has produced a series of distinctive works in black and white that examine issues of identity and ideas of difference based around his Nigerian heritage. There are separate notes about his experience of creating the portrait of Shimbe Avalumun Queen next to the work. 2

Kelvin Okafor Shimbe Avalumun Queen Pencil on paper 70 x 59 cm £44,000 Continuing our very successful Studio in the East Gallery, Simon Hodges VPPS is this year giving a personal prize for the best work produced by a member of the public in the studio events. We once again have a full schedule of demonstrations and workshops on pastel and dry media techniques for our visitors. I will be doing several hands on demonstrations using the materials of our main sponsor, Caran d’Ache. We were disappointed in September to have to cancel our annual Heatherleys whole day workshops due to the tube strike. However, look out for advertisements on our website from June for a potential Heatherleys series in September 2026.

I would like to highlight our new sponsor DALER-ROWNEY, who have generously donated a prize of £1,000 in artists’ materials this year. They are, of course, a well-known and long-established name in the Art World and their products include many papers familiar to pastel artists, including their Daler-Rowney brand, Murano, Ingres and Canford. They also supply coloured pencils, pastels and oil pastels under their own name and the Lyra brand. I would like to thank our members, who contribute so much time and support to making the exhibition a success, as well as the stalwart Mall Galleries staff. Our sponsors provide support with their many attractive and generous prizes, and we are grateful for these. I do hope you enjoy the exhibition and that there may be a work that strikes a chord and that you can take home to raise the mid-winter spirits. Richard Rees, President www.thepastelsociety.org.uk www.mallgalleries.org.uk

The Pastel Society Catalogue Awards

First Prize

Alex Ayliffe Boatyard Soft pastel on paper 32 x 83 cm £1,100

Alex has worked as an illustrator and artist all her life. The majority of her work is now abstract and she takes much of her inspiration from the Suffolk landscape where she lives. She enjoys the freedom of pastels, and can often be found sketching the East Anglian countryside, estuaries and coast. These influences converge in ‘Boatyard,’ which is inspired by a working boatyard on the River Deben. The abstract shapes suggest industry, tethers, ropes and noise.

Second Prize

Mary Ruggeri The Crow Oil pastel 47 x 37 cm £750

The RDS Prize

Maj Lisa Dörig In the Quiet of the Water, I Find Myself Oil pastel, soft pastel and colour pencil on paper 78 x 30 cm £1,850

I saw this crow in Highgate Wood last winter perched on a piece of wood in the middle of the pond pecking at the shallow rather dirty water. It was the bird’s almost perfect reflection that interested me and how everything around him seemed to also sparkle and reflect in the water. He also looked rather menacing and as he suddenly turned sideways I was able to make a sketch and take a quick photo. I stood there for quite a while watching and waiting for him to come into the perfect position. Mary Ruggeri 3

The Studio All events in The Studio are free with admission to the exhibition. Wednesday 21 January, 11am The Studio opens with an introduction to the events programme and The Studio Prize by Simon Hodges and Sarah Bee. This will be followed by an informal workshop for the remainder of the day. This year the Pastel Society is presenting two £100 Cass Art E-Gift cards for work undertaken in the gallery and selected after the exhibition by Simon Hodges. All information may be found in The Studio and all submitted pictures will be shown on the Pastel Society website with the winners. Tuesday 27 January Roger Dellar will be holding soft pastel demonstrations during the day, explaining how he works and answering any questions you may have. This year, he will include still life painting. 6pm to 8.30pm Art Event Evening: An opportunity to draw and paint with members of the Pastel Society! Easels are available on a first come, first served basis but there are plenty of chairs and A2 drawing boards. Please bring your own materials, although a limited selection is available if required. During a break halfway through, there is a drink provided and the chance to talk to PS members. Members who hope to either paint or assist include Richard Rees, Roger Dellar, Simon Hodges, Jane Hodgson, John Tookey, Tom Zaw, Jeannette Hayes and Maria Kaleta. Tickets £12, or £10 to spectate (concessions available). To book, visit www.mallgalleries.org.uk

Wednesday 28 January Dave Roberts will be both demonstrating how he works and holding a workshop on materials he recommends. As a new member, this is Dave’s first appearance in The Studio and we are very excited to see how he produces such stunning landscapes. Thursday 29 January Louise Diggle will demonstrate plein air pastels on The Mall outside the galleries (weather permitting). If the weather is adverse, expect a talk inside the galleries about plein air painting.

Friday 30 January Martin Goold will be holding two themed talks touring the exhibition, suitable for all age groups, walking and standing: “Colour and Atmosphere in Pastel Paint”, looking at a variety of ways in which pastel artists have suggested and evoked atmosphere in their paintings. “Suggesting Depth and Distance in Pastel Painting”, looking at a variety of ways in which pastel artists have suggested depth in their paintings. Saturday 31 January Felicity House is returning for both a morning and afternoon portrait demonstration.

Saturday 7 February Fiona Carvell, another new member making her first appearance in The Studio, will be using fruits and vegetables as reference to demonstrate the basics of composition, understanding subject, light, weight and density as well as colour choices, pastel application and mark making.

Plus: On a variety of afternoons, President of the Pastel Society, Richard Rees, will take you through the amazing qualities of Caran d’Ache pastel varieties and show you how they can open up a world of creativity. John Tookey demonstrates soft pastel, Andrew Barrowman will demonstrate how charcoal can be so emotive when drawing a subject and Curtis Holder will be holding a portrait demonstration. Simon Hodges will be available throughout the exhibition to try and answer all your pastel and dry media questions, with materials and sketchbooks, both original ones from this year and a selection of printed sketchbooks only available to look at during exhibitions. Simon will also be talking about a new small book titled ‘Use it or lose it’ and holding a series of informal demonstrations and workshops on pastel & mixed media; pastel: chalk, oil & water; pastel & process; and pastel: sketches, studies and painting. A member of the Society, including Jane Hodgson, Jayne Perkins, Maria Kaleta, Louise Diggle, Tanya Avchinnikova and Janine Baldwin, will be around the gallery to engage with the public and to answer any queries about pastel, dry media or the exhibition in general. Please look out for a person with a lanyard and don’t be afraid to ask anything. There will also be slideshows running at various times in The Studio. At the time of printing the catalogue, information from other members is awaited and will be made available along with further events and exact timings both on the Mall Galleries website, Pastel Society website, and in the gallery.

Claire Spencer

NDD ARCA ATD DipAD RBSA PS With great sadness, we announce that the artist Claire Spencer ARCA (aka Claire Postins) died peacefully on Sunday 13 July 2025 at her home in Bewdley, aged 88. Claire Spencer studied painting at Hornsey College of Art and the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1963. She was awarded an Italian Government Scholarship and travelled to study painting in Umbria in 1966. With a long and distinguished career spanning more than 60 years, Claire Spencer consistently exhibited new work in regional, national and international exhibitions. Claire worked in many mediums – charcoal, pencil, watercolour, inks and oils – but she was best known for her work in pastels, recognised in her election to the Pastel Society in 1985.
