Page 1

SAGIT Deep Ripping Project Younghusband 2021 This trial was established to compare soil amelioration methods including deep ripping on non-wetting sands and to evaluate the cost/benefit of organic inputs such as chicken litter. Soil Treatment

Organic Input (Chicken Litter @ 5 t/ha)

Control

 Nil  Surface Spread

Control + SE14 Soil Wetter

Spading

Deep Ripping

 Nil  Surface Spread

Deep Ripping with Inclusion plates

 Nil  Surface Spread  Direct Injected behind inclusion plate

 Establishment improved by SE 14 soil wetter  All treatments sown across 2020 crop rows (Partial onrow)  Deep ripping, especially with inclusion plated led to variable establishment outcomes  Spading gave small improvement over control but was exposed to severe erosion post seeding. Figure 1: 2021 mean crop establishment x treatment
