LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

WELCOME TO THE SUMMER - FALL EDITION OF CRYSTAL HI-LITES !

Greetings! I trust our latest copy of Crystal Hi-Lites finds you and your family well. Your dedication to Malden Catholic has allowed us to achieve extraordinary results! We are most thankful for our partnership with you and the difference you make in our students’ lives.

We have much to celebrate. We held our first codivisional graduation as we gradu ated students from the Boys Division and Girls Division. It was a beautiful day and a memorable ceremony! We celebrated our graduates and their accomplishments. I encourage you to read the articulate addresses of our valedictorians from the Boys and Girls Divisions included in this edition of Crystal Hi-Lites.

We celebrated two state championships this past school year. Our Boys’ Basketball Team was dominant in the post-season through the final game, and our Mock Trial Team earned their first State Championship against some of the best schools in the State. We are proud of both teams – particularly the dedication these students put forth, and how well they represented our school. These outstanding teams are featured in this edition as well.

Our Annual Spring Gala (Leading Beyond) set new records, as we honored Dr. Dan McCarthy MC 1950 and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Noonan McCarthy GC 1950. The evening provided a touching tribute to two individuals who exemplify the results of a MC education, while reaching new levels of support for the school. We exceeded $1 million, which translates into a strong foundation for student scholarships. Thank you to all who made this incredible evening possible!

We exceeded other critical fundraising goals as well. Our Fund for Malden Catholic (FFMC) surpassed its $1 million goal, and our total fundraising reached a new record. These vital funds allow us to meet the needs of our growing student population, which now stands at nearly 780 students for the 2022 - 23 school year. These are all signs we are headed in the right direction, and the health of our school is growing.

Something special is happening at Malden Catholic. Although many private schools are struggling, Malden Catholic has excelled. Increased enrollment, successful teams, strong college placement and reaching new levels of support are all signs that we are taking the school to a whole new level. This could only be done with God's graces and generous donors who know their gifts make a difference. Thank you for all you do for our beloved school.

OF Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D., H’18

In March 2022, Malden Catholic celebrated the completion of a beautiful new chapel located in the school’s center hallway that was named in honor of Brother Thomas Puccio, C.F.X., Ed.D., H’18. Pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Medford, Father Paul Coughlin, presided over the dedication and blessed the sacred space with over 100 guests in attendance.

A minister at MC for 36 years, Brother Puccio has been a big part of all aspects of the school; from serving twice as Interim Headmaster, to 26 years as school principal. According to Brother Puccio, it was a lovely ceremony. “It was very moving for me, a great gathering of friends and supporters of Malden Catholic.” Devoted to the institution and his Xaverian Brothers, Brother Puc cio participates at the school in every capacity. “Brother’s hand is on all aspects of the school community,” stated Bob McCarthy, Senior Director of Advancement. “The level of dedication and commitment is unmatched. We are truly blessed by his presence every day.”

Brother Puccio, who teaches theology and supervises Campus Ministry looks forward to bringing students into the chapel for prayer and reflection during the school year. “The chapel is a space that is also open during the day for people to drop in if they’d like to have quiet moments,” said Brother Puccio. “Cam pus Ministry will make use of it for weekly rosary, Friday morning masses and celebrations of other liturgical occassions throughout the year. Classes can come in for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and for team blessings as well. It will be a welcoming space for many uses.”

Margaret and Paul Chisholm first met Brother Puccio when he was Principal at Malden Catholic while their two sons, Brendan and Paul, attended MC in the 90’s. The Chisholm family became an active part of the MC community and developed a profession al and personal relationship with Brother Puccio and appreciated all of the wonderful experiences their children had while attend ing the school. “The Chisholms decided to donate toward the development of the chapel and dedicate the space to Brother Puccio. They believed in the benefits of a Catholic education and its ability to create young men and women of character, leader ship and purpose. It’s not just academics; Catholic education is building the whole person,” McCarthy explained. “The Chishol ms recognize and support that.”

Margaret Chisholm shared her appreciation and admiration for Brother Puccio during the ceremony. She says Brother Puccio demonstrates his Xaverian virtues with integrity every day.

“Brother Tom grounded his life in the belief that each person is unique, gifted and loved by God. He has treated every student with endless patience and kindness, empathy and respect, and, at times with firmness,” reflected Mrs. Chisholm. “This beautiful chapel is peaceful and calming - a beautiful reflection of Brother himself.”

7 CHAPEL DEDICATION
IN HONOR

Leading Beyond Gala

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, over three hundred sixty members of the Malden Catholic community gathered for the 15th Annual Gala, a beloved annual tradition where the MC community, comprised of alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends, recognize an important honoree who has soared beyond all expectations with the presen tation of the Plus Ultra Award. In the tradition of Malden Catholic’s Annual Gala, the school celebrated a couple who personifies the pil lars of character, leadership and success - Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy ’50 and Mrs. Margaret T. (Noonan) McCarthy GC ’50 as the Plus Ultra Honorees. Dr. and Mrs. McCarthy MC '50; GC '50 have established scholarship funds for Malden Catholic Girls and Boys Divisions as well as a fund in memory of Margaret’s cousin Margaret M. Dunphy GC'61. They are also members of Malden Catholic’s Plus Ultra and the Saint Francis Xavier Societies. This incredible live event raised over $1,000,000 for Malden Catholic student scholarships.

According to John K. Thornburg, MC President, “This has been a momentous year for Malden Catholic - we are celebrating our 90th anniversary and the first class of Girls Division students to graduate along with the Boys Division students. Malden Catholic is leading beyond all expectations, by fostering nine decades of extraordinary young adults who continue to flourish from the education provided by this outstanding school.”

“We are most grateful to Margaret and Dan McCarthy for their tre mendous dedication and commitment to Malden Catholic,” stated Thornburg. “Raising over $1,000,000, the 2022 Gala is the highest grossing event in our history, and our entire community has been very generous in supporting our students!”

Gala proceeds will benefit student scholarships and help ensure that qualified young men and women who want to attend MC are able to do so, regardless of family finances.

OF

Brother Daniel Cremin, C.F.X., H’18

As you might imagine, someone who had majored in Recreation Education probably loves to party, and party Brother Dan Cremin, C.F.X., H ’18, did - at Malden Catholic’s June 14th retirement celebration in his honor as the longest serving Xaverian Brother in Malden Catholic history.

It was a great day to be a Lancer! Enjoying a cookout menu and gathering under the tent in the parking lot alongside the gym that had been his classroom for so many years, over 150 friends, family, alumni, students and colleagues, past and present, found it a memory-filled occasion to show some love for a man whose devotion to MC had earned a special place in their hearts. Brother Dan’s 46 years at Malden Catholic were equally divided between 23 years of coaching and instructing physical education and 23 years of school counseling.

A native of Lowell, the oldest of eight children of MC alum Dan Cremin ’45, young Dan attended Keith Academy for one year, then transitioned into the Xaverian Brothers Juniorate Program at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, where he earned his high school diploma. Immediately following high school, he applied for entrance to the Xaverian Brothers’ Novitiate in Newton Highlands. Then under the direction of Brother Robert Sullivan ’45, who later became Malden Catholic’s 11th Headmaster, he was admitted

along with 19 other postulants that year. He professed his first religious vows as a Xaverian Novice in 1968.

After two years of college and formation courses as part of the Brothers’ Novitiate program, he enrolled in Northeastern University’s Boston-Bouvé College to earn a Bachelor-of-Science degree in Recreation Education (1975). The school’s unique fiveyear cooperative education model, placing students annually in intern positions in their field of study, allowed Brother Dan to develop valuable real-world skills to complement classroom theory when he began teaching physical education at MC in 1975. His educational pathway later continued during his ministry at Malden Catholic with an M.Ed. degree in Human Movement from Boston University (1978), and an M.Ed. in School Counseling from Suffolk University (2001).

A member of the Malden Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame, Brother Dan had an illustrious MC coaching career. He was head varsity soccer coach from 1975 to 1983. During those years, former longtime Trustee Steve O’Neill ’78 was one of his captains. Steve later coached the team, as always, assisted by the Grandfather of MC Soccer, Mr. Manny Costa, (on staff since Brother Jim Malone founded the program in 1973!). In its first season of League play in 1978, the team posted a record of 5-4-1 in the Commonwealth Conference. The following season, the team earned its first berth in the State soccer tournament with an overall record of 7-4-3, led by our Senior All-Stars and Co-Captains Frank Ciampa and Mike Killion.

In 1976, Brother Dan started our Swimming and Diving Program. He continued in that role through 1998, establishing the Catholic Conference in Swimming and Diving in 1979 and earning recogni tion as the 1988-89 Boston Globe Swim Coach of the Year, North Division. Joe Sheehan ’89, one of his prodigies, won numerous gold medals that year and established a state breast-stroke record that stood for 20 years! Joe, who earned Boston Globe North Division Swimmer of the Year in 1989 while qualifying as an All American and setting two state records, led our Lancers to an eighth-place finish at the State Championship Meet. He still holds school records in the 100-yard Breaststroke and the 200-yard Individual Medley!

Brother Dan also served eight years as President of the Eastern Mass Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2003. For many years, confrere from the Melrose Xaverian Community, Brother Fred Eid, C.F.X., assisted with the program, which eventually outgrew its early “home”

10

at the Melrose YMCA and moved to the Malden High School facility in 1986. Practices at both pools began at a cheerful 6:00AM! Current MC Social Studies teacher and Cross-Country coach Jared Belliveau ’97 recalls, “I first met Brother Dan as my freshman Phys-ed teacher in the fall of 1993. Although I had no experience, he encouraged me to join the Swim Team that winter. The early mornings were tough, but it was a great experience for a novice athlete. I then joined his Cross-Country Team that fall. I thought running might be a good fit for me, but the fact that Brother Dan was the coach was the real motivation for me. He was my XC coach until I graduated. I went on to run at Holy Cross. We’ve organized the annual Alumni Fun Run together since the mid 2000’s.” Belliveau, who earned Catholic Conference All-Star status his senior season, captained the 1996 team and led them to a Catholic Conference Tri-Champions title! Brother Dan was also an avid runner and endurance athlete, who competed in 16 marathons and 16 triathlons! He coached Cross-Country from 1984 - 98, starting as assistant to Brother Myles McManus, C.F.X., through 1987. Then continuing as head coach, he assisted with outdoor track for five seasons, led by Head Coach Brother Tim Hoey, C.F.X., who assisted Brother Dan in Cross Country during that time. Jerry Bailey, ‘89, later served in both of those assistant roles before succeeding Bro. Dan as Head Cross-Country Coach. In the 1990 season, the Lancer Harriers shattered Xaverian’s unbeaten streak of 45 dual meets on our team’s way to capturing first-place at the State Catholic High School Championship Meet, and then fourth place in the Division I All-State Championship Meet, led by Kevin Carnabucci, ‘92. Belliveau said, “Brother Dan was an exceptional coach and motivator, and his interest in each individual athlete was very clear. He quite simply wanted each of us to give our best in whatever we did. Whether in practice or at a meet, his words of encouragement and praise for hard-working runners were like fuel on a fire. For many young men, that made all the difference. If Brother thought we could do it, then we could do it!”

Brother Dan was a “one-man show” in the gym when he began in 1975. He was soon joined by a student teacher from Boston State College, Mr. Barry Haley. Together they developed an engaging program. Haley also served as MC’s athletic trainer, filled several coaching roles and later became Malden Catholic’s Athletic Director. They had busy days! With enrollment in the ‘80s at times near 800 students, and all freshmen and sophomores taking a semester of Phys. Ed., (and some juniors and seniors electing it) the gym saw no lull throughout the day. For the physical educa tion “classroom,” Bro. Dan and Haley used the gym, the track, a cherished Broadway Park street-hockey court, and all our fields, but with the gym as their primary space. Later Mr. Guy Prescott served as Bro. Dan’s associate teacher in their “Physical Cultures” classes!

Brother Dan was not a “roll-the-ball-out-and-let-them-play” phys. ed. teacher: he was intent on combining individual skills devel opment, with team building, with as wide-as-possible a variety of activities – that ranged from multiple sports’ instruction to Presi dential Physical Fitness activities and weight training, to working on gymnastics apparatus. Students climbed ropes, bounced on a trampoline, worked a pommel horse, vaulted, traveled on parallel bars, created tumbling floor exercise routines and flew on the rings and the horizontal bar. His training as a religious Brother comfortably complemented the humanistic educational theories that informed his professional sport-and-movement training. These combined, allowed him to promote a student-centered

approach to learning in his physical education classes. This formula for successful relationship building also worked just as effectively with students when Brother Dan transitioned into Guidance in 1998. There he drew on Carl Rogers’ client-cen tered approach to counseling, an approach emphasizing authenticity, complete empathy and unconditional acceptance.

At that time, counselors each typically matched with a group of about fifty 9th-grade advisees and “followed” them through their high school careers. After several years with this model, and sensing a need that freshmen get more specialized atten tion, he proposed in 2007 to Headmaster Tom Arria that he be designated the sole Grade-9 counselor, following in the foot steps of Brothers Kevin Kenney and Myles McManus, C.F.X. He ministered with care and devotion in that role until retirement.

Although our COVID-19 environment over the past 2 years had partially limited some of his routines as an MC sports fan, his presence at athletics competitions of all sorts – especial ly at the freshman level – has been and will continue to be unmatched. Generations of Malden Catholic men under his watchful eye at the cafeteria doorway have been scrupulous about 360-degree “tuckage” – the phrase he has humorous ly used for many years to remind boys to tuck in their shirt, as proper dress code would require! Much more than that, though, his dedication and faith have helped thousands of young adults move toward great lives, rooted in care and friendship. We are thankful for his life-long presence to our Malden Catholic community, for the service he has rendered and the love he has shared.

From Dreamers to Engineers in the Making

An inspirational program, Project Lead the Way, was introduced at Malden Catholic as a unique full-year elective offering in 2018 - 2019. It intended to engage the boys and girls of the Class of 2022 in interdisciplinary courses in STEM. In the able hands of Malden Catholic’s STEM Director, Saman Abbas, who has a M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University, the program has flourished! This past year 78 students participated in one of three Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses now offered, taught by Mrs. Abbas and engineer colleague Mr. Gary Reardon.

Developed as a non-profit company to lead students toward more real-world skills and to promote STEM education, PLTW offers a host of courses available to students Pre-K through Grade 12: PLTW Launch (PreK-5); PLTW Gateway (Gr. 6-8); PLTW Comput er Science (Gr. 9-12); PLTW Engineering (Gr. 9-12); and PLTW Biomedical Science (Gr. 9-12). Malden Catholic employs the engineering component and since 2018 has annually added a new course from the Engineering module, starting with “Introduction to Engineering Design,” then moving on to “Principles of Educa tion,” and concluding with “Digital Electronics.” Each of the three, says Mrs. Abbas, “challenges students to master the engineering design process, that is, to identify a precise problem; to brain storm multiple possible solutions; to build and test a successful prototype; and, finally, to communicate the solution – to pitch the idea – to a target audience.”

What makes the courses so exciting and increasingly popular, she says, is the powerful combination of real-world, problem-based activities embedded in projects that challenge students to col laborate, create, and communicate. Additionally, often working in two and three-person teams, students develop important interpersonal skills essential to success in today’s workplaces. In the introductory course, students learn design process, research and analysis techniques, global and human impacts of technology and engineering standards. They use the most current solid-mod eling design software to design solutions to proposed problems. In the “Principles of Engineering” course, they delve further into mechanical engineering, extending the introductory learnings with major concepts they would encounter in post-secondary engineering courses. Digital Electronics, then, the final course in the sequence, leads students through the design of circuitry used to build basic computer processors. They use simulation software that prepares them to build a working prototype. By the end of the course, students are programming BOE Bot microprocessors (robots) to perform various class competitions.

A unique feature of each course is that students need to success fully communicate their solutions both to peers and to members of the professional engineering community. At least once a year, they will “pitch” a problem-solution proposal to a cooperating engineer or engineering firm for review and critique. Each course also has a nationally standardized “End of Course Exam.” Grades run a range of proficiencies across 650 points, with scores over 600 indicating an “Accomplished” level. In last year’s exam, MC senior/valedictorian Charlie Dilman had the rare honor of earning a perfect score!

PLTW participation shapes one track of our Malden Catholic STEM Certificate Program, and successful completion is sometimes accompanied by college scholarship opportunity and college credit. Early indicators, says Mrs. Abbas, suggest that PLTW students “outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers compared to their nonPLTW peers.” This 2022-23 school year, the program, entering its fourth year at MC, will run a total of eight sections with about 150 students. No doubt, the problem-solving mindset and real-world skills engendered by Project Lead the Way will allow students to make the leap from dreamers to doers in school and elsewhere -engineers in the making!

12
PROJECT LEAD THE WAY
“Early indicators suggest that PLTW students outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies and are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers and researchers as compared to their non-PLTW peers," stated Mrs. Abbas.
87TH COMMENCEMENT - CLASS OF 2022

I am a graduating Senior, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to attend MC. Malden Catholic has made a huge impact on my life both academically and athletically. One of my favorite parts of MC is the close, tight-knit community, as well as the faculty and staff. Over the past four years, I have established many relationships that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.

The First Codivisional Graduation

On May 21, 2022, Malden Catholic High School celebrated the 87th Commencement ceremony which was the school’s first codivisional graduation including both the Boys and Girls Divisions. The Class of 2022 graduation was held on Donovan Field in Brother Gilbert Stadium with 194 MC graduates and over 800 family members, faculty, and staff in attendance.

The ceremony started with an invocation by MC Principal, Rose Maria Redman, and was followed with remarks by MC’s Girls Di vision valedictorian Lily Baglio of Peabody. Baglio’s address com mented on the great success that has resulted from the school’s unique codivisional model. She also shared a letter written to her two siblings, Brooke and Luke, who will be joining MC’s Class of 2026, with tips regarding how to appreciate the lessons gleaned both inside and outside of the classroom and the school’s strong 90-year legacy.

Malden Catholic Principal Rose Maria Redman along with Boys Di vision Leader Robert J. Bucchino ’71, Girls Division Leader Jeffrey P. Smith ’95 P’24 and Assistant Principal of Student Life James J. Grocki, delivered remarks about each candidate. MC President John K. Thornburg then followed with the conferral of diplomas.

Charles Dilman of Melrose, Malden Catholic Boys Division valedictorian, addressed the audience and commented on the tremendous value of MC’s academic programs and the spirit of connection he experienced over the past four years. According to Dilman, he is exceptionally well prepared to take on the world and its future challenges based on the education received at Malden Catholic during a period of unprecedented change.

16
MALDEN CATHOLIC 87TH COMMENCEMENT
17

I am privileged to address you all today as the co-valedictorian at Malden Catholic’s 87th Commencement Ceremony.

First, to the Class of 2022, congratulations on arriving at this joyful moment! As all of you know, the past four years of our high school experience have been full of changes and bumps along the road. Chief of these has been the pandemic, whose swiftness and deadliness have upended our lives for the past two and a half years. There was also the addition of a whole new division of students for the first time in decades, and all the growing pains that came with it. So many amazing teachers have moved on or plan to move on or have been and will be replaced by new teachers who will continue to make our school the incredible place that it is. Changes like these will always be

a part of life – well, hopefully not another pandemic any time soon! However, I know that after the turbulence of the past four years, we are well-equipped to face all these changes head-on, excited for what these transformations may bring. Just as Tony Felder said during his speech at the Gala, “You don’t want to end up as a person who had a dream and never accomplished it.” I hope that these four years of challenges and training have helped each of you to realize your dreams, whatever they may be. Whether you are heading off to college, serving our nation in the military, or entering the workforce, know that you have your class’s support in all the challenges you may face. I also hope that all these transitions have shown you that you have an amazing support system of people that really care about your success.

18
VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH - CHARLES DILMAN ‘22

I would like to thank our teachers, especially the ones who have been here these past four years with us, for overcoming all the same challenges that our class had to face. From learning what in the world a Google Classroom is to being forced to teach 6 classes in a day, with two long blocks back-to-back, your willing ness to change and adapt for the betterment of all the students here is remarkable. Sra. Crotty, Mr. Gregory, Mr. Endicott, Ms. Lee, Ms. Abbas, Mr. Cleary, Mr. Hickey and Mr. Murray, the list goes on of teachers who have turned the chore of going to class into something that we look forward to every day.

I would also like to thank our incredible staff that made sure that our school was clean, updated, and ready for 800 people every single day, especially with all the growth and renovation that has occurred during our time here. DJ, Sal, Chris, Jésus, John, and Miguel, you guys are awesome, and you never re ceive enough credit. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for all the support and sacrifices they have made for me to come here. I know the decision to send me to Malden Catholic four years ago was not an easy or cheap one, but I cannot be hap pier about the choice we made. Thank you for always being by my side, through all the long nights of studying and all our bor ing track meets and all the times I forgot something at home. I know that you will miss me so much in a few months when I head off far away to college but know that I will always love you (and, most importantly, I will occasionally come back).

I know that when many of us enrolled at Malden Catholic in our first year, we entered as individuals who became part of two, distinctly different divisions. This was most definitely the case for me, being the only student from my middle school. Never theless, I believe that despite how we entered, we now leave as one, united Malden Catholic. To quote our mantra for the past several years, we have been “United in Spirit, Intent on One Purpose” (Philippians 2:2). This unity does not just happen by chance. It comes from the work done by the administration, especially President Thornburg and Principal Redman.

It comes from sharing successes together, like the state cham pionship of the Tony Felder-led boys’ basketball team or the countless wins by our Mock Trial team. It comes from shared events, like the awkward semi-formal or the less awkward prom. And it comes from the efforts of every single one of you, to create and form that brotherhood and sisterhood that is the hallmark of the Malden Catholic community. This unity causes us to transform from just any old boring Catholic school to something special. It lends itself to our fan section being the best in the state. It lends itself, too, to our numerous academic achievements and moments of growth. And this unity is the rea son we gather here today, to mark the graduation of an incred ible class of 2022. None of us attended MC in a vacuum; we all had shared experiences as a class that shaped our enjoyment of our four years at this school. I know I speak for the entire class when I say that we enjoyed our years here in and out of the classroom, so thank you to all of you for making our experience so incredible.

Thinking about the past four years, my mind returns to the anthem that has been drilled in our heads: “We Are MC” and what it truly means. What does it mean to be “MC”? The M might stand for Malden, but it also stands for the communities that each of us come from and our need to give back to those communities. The M represents the service due to the organiza

tions around us that give back to people who desperately need it, organizations like Bread of Life, La Colaborativa and Mission of Deeds. Finally, I hope the M will signify to you a sense of home. Even as each one of us leaves Malden, and, for some of us, Massachusetts altogether, I hope that the school and the community continue to give you a sense of belonging in this huge world. The “C” in “MC” similarly may stand for Catholic, but, more generally, the letter symbolizes the principles instilled in us, uniquely part of Catholic education and developed by the numerous Theology teachers at this school. It means the five Xaverian values of Simplicity, Humility, Compassion, Trust and Zeal embodied daily by our own two Xaverian Brothers, Brother Daniel Cremin, and Brother Thomas Puccio. My hope is that we, as well-formed men and women, will carry these values for the rest of our lives, never losing sight of the C in MC. Thus, let the slogan “We are MC” screamed at pep rallies and posted throughout the school mean something more than a cliché. Let reflecting on the slogan remind you of the uniqueness of your four years not only at an incredible high school but also within a community of brothers and sisters… a school and a community that you will take with you no matter how far you go.

19
"What does it mean to be 'MC'? The M might stand for Malden, but it also stands for the communities that each of us come from and our need to give back to those communities...Finally, I hope the M will signify to you a sense of home."

I am honored to address you today along with Charles Dilman as co-valedictorian at Malden Catholic’s 87th Commencement Ceremony.

To my fellow graduates from the Girls Division, thank you for joining me on this wildly unpredictable, but exhilarating journey throughout the past four years. To the Graduates of the Boys Division, although the pandemic threw a wrench into some of the plans that would have unified us more often, it is an honor to share today with you. Most of us, boys and girls included, came in freshman year to embark on a series of firsts. And together, we were part of the inaugural class of this codivisional model at Malden Catholic. The Malden Catholic community today and every day illustrate the family of support we have

behind us. Thank you to everyone who made today possible, those in person and those not here with us. And on behalf of the Girls Division, thank you to Ms. Lisa Cenca, who four years ago, helped us realize our potential here at Malden Catholic.

To say I am grateful to be here today is an understatement. We have made it. We sit here today reminiscing about the familiar halls that we say goodbye to and the friendly faces that wel comed us every day. We are here to celebrate the extraordinary successes of an unforgettable four years.

Schedule Changes. Four of them. Mr. Smith learned how to crack a smile, occasionally. And there are plenty of memories that fill the halls. Nevertheless, we sit here today on this hot turf field celebrating the miraculous achievements of our class.

20
SPEECH - LILY BAGLIO ‘22
VALEDICTORIAN

To the administration and Board of Trustees, who ensured us of the success that would result from this codivisional model: we all sit here today, prepared for our future endeavors, and agree that you were right. On behalf of the Class of 2022, I want to thank you for being there to hear all our ideas and aspira tions, while doing your best to make them possible. We are so grateful for your attempts to preserve the normalcy of high school during the pandemic. Thank you for letting us attend school last year, even if it was in cohorts, to maintain the bonds with our MC family. We appreciate the deliberate attempts to allow spectators during our successful basketball, volleyball and football games. Your efforts will not be forgotten.

I would be remiss if I did not take the time today to thank our families and friends for the endless support, love and guidance that allowed us to be a part of MC. From rides to and from 99 Crystal St. more times than anyone can count to advise on course selection and friend drama, they have made us the peo ple we are today. Mom and Dad, thank you for encouraging me to take the chance to come to Malden Catholic. For those who know me, risks are something I tend to avoid, but the decision to come to MC has made me rethink that mindset. Without the two of you, I would not be here today. The example of your work ethic encouraged me to embrace my potential and taught me how to attain my goals.

Finally, I have two other people that I need to thank. I am jealous that you get to start your journey next year. For those of you who do not know, my brother and sister will be enter ing Malden Catholic’s Class of 2026 starting in the fall. As I sat down to reflect on what I wanted to say today, I realized that all I wanted to do was give you a glimpse of what my brother and sister can look forward to.

Dear Brooke and Luke, I am now the old person who you two can make fun of when I say this but enjoy every moment of the next four years. It will fly by. I remember like it was yesterday walking into my first day of freshman year, wearing a uniform for the very first time, terrified of not finding my place here at MC. Little did I know that in time, a family would come to surround me each day that I walked into the building. Every morning, I was unsure what the day would bring, but I was confident that I would have my friends by my side. The bonds we made together at Malden Catholic will carry us throughout our lives. While we often shared nervous anxiety for an impending math test or a research paper due in the upcoming period, we also shared laughs when Mr. Smith would come in and scare Mr. Gregory or when someone was crying over something stupid (sidenote: that was usually me.). Brooke and Luke, I cannot wait for you to share this experience.

For four years now, you have sat in the crowd at basketball and football games, various arts and awards nights and maybe even listened to a few mock trials. And now, you are months away from beginning your journey. So don’t stay in the audi ence during your time here. Don’t be a spectator! Be an active participant in everything you do. The rest of the Class of 2022 and I have seen the good that has resulted from jumping in and getting involved. We have won Science Fairs, Basketball State Championships and Mock Trial State Championships. We have shined at DramaFest and Robotics Competitions, established Make-A-Wish and Spirit Clubs and created a community that

embraces innovation. None of this would have occurred without the support of our teachers. Soon after entering MC, I noticed something remarkable about them: here, teachers treat us like real people, not just students in the classroom. Brooke and Luke, you have heard stories about Mr. Endicott, Ms. Lynch-Gal vin, Mr. Gregory, Mr. Kissel, Ms. Lee and so many others over the course of four years here. So, lean on them because they are the best supporters anyone could ever ask for. Remember that they will teach you lessons inside and outside of the class room and maybe you will not realize it until you are sitting here at graduation in May of 2026… but always be ready to accept those lessons when they come along. And lastly, be grateful for the family of distinguished Malden Catholic and Girls Catholic alumni that you will join in four short years. Never forget that you are here today because of an incredible tradition of Cath olic education that goes back 90 years. I hope that will provide you with direction and inspiration whenever you need it.

Now, the two of you might not listen to me, but listen to the rest of the Class of 2022, as together we join this group of alumni in just a few short minutes when we say we will be here for you. Over the past four years, we have encountered count less alumni that give back to the 99 Crystal St family. Soon, we will join those who have created the place that we lovingly called school and home. Brooke and Luke, I cannot wait for you to join us in a few years. Trust me when I say I am sad to leave but know that I feel reassured that you two will be embarking on your Malden Catholic journey.

Brooke and Luke, this is the legacy that you have to look for ward to. This is the legacy that the Class of 2022 has enjoyed over the past four years!

MC’s Summer Internship Program

Malden Catholic offers a unique Summer Internship Program that allows MC students to intern with prominent MC alumnus and local businesses in a host of various fields. This past summer, MC is proud to announce that over 114 students participated in real-world lead ership experiences in Business, STEM and the Arts. The Malden Catholic Summer Internship Program provided professional competitive internships that exposed students to potential future career paths, provided opportunities for individuals to investigate areas for college course concentrations and improved resumes for college applications. In addition, students received benefits from networking with career professionals learning invaluable skills that are transferable across any path chosen after college graduation. Malden Catholic’s leadership opportunities include but are not limited to business concentrations, STEM research with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Malden Urban Media Arts Collaborations, an Engineering Intensive in partnership with Wentworth University and Harvard MEDscience Mod ule, to name a few. Each of the interns received business training before participating in the internship, and they were supervised through out the process by Director of Student Leadership Programs, Jeannine R. Reardon, Esq. GC ’89 P’23.

“During my week-long internship at Foster, Walker, & DiMarco, I conducted in-depth research on the homebuy er process for adults in Massachusetts. Using the informa tion I found, I created a guide for first-time homebuyers to assist the company with the segment’s purchasing process. Stepping into the shoes of a lawyer was an amazing experience for me that taught me valuable skills such as research, data collection, and analysis.”

“I was interested in pursuing engineering in college and the internship only reinforced my interest in the field. Mr. Sullivan took me around to the different departments from HVAC to electrical engineering and taught me about the various areas. I also visited an active construc tion site and was able to see how engineers work with contractors.”

MALDEN RIVER MEDIA PROJECT

Malden Catholic interns were also tasked with a professional media project, while gaining experience in roles that included live media production, video editing/production, podcast editing/production, citizen journalism and environmental issues related to the preservation of the Malden River. During the summer, students continued to expand their efforts, to clean up and bring attention to the Malden River by the creation of a PSA video campaign and PhotoVoice project: a collaboration between UMA, Malden Catholic, Malden River (FoMR), and the Malden River Works, resulting in a collection of photos of wildlife and extraneous debris taken from canoes on Malden River with some narrative and an enhanced connection to our natural treasure known as the Malden River.

“My fellow interns and I were able to film an environmental PSA on the trash surrounding the Malden River. I am particularly interested in the videography aspect, so I made it my main goal to get as much film as possible for our behind-the-scenes footage. Other interns focused more on the photography aspect of the Malden River. I can say I thoroughly enjoyed working with UMA and would love to work with them in the future!”

MIT RESEARCH PROGRAM

Over 40 students worked with Massachusetts Institute of Technology McAfee Professor of Engineering Markus Buehler, MC’s STEM Director Saman Abbas and Saint Joseph School of Wakefield Science Director Doug Shattuck on a 6-week intensive research program where they worked on a challenge created by NASA to design materials for a potential lunar colony. The program integrated teachers and students into a laboratory where they contributed to weekly lab meetings and presented their findings to MIT scientists and postdoctoral and graduate students.

The class used simulated lunar dust formulated by NASA and provided by the University of Central Florida. The students developed a meth od for comparing conventional concrete with material proposed for lunar dwellings and used chemical analysis, electron micrographs and EDS maps provided by corporate collaborator, JEOL USA of Peabody, MA. The students concluded that the moon dust needed extensive processing or additional constituents before it could be made structurally competent. An abstract of their work was accepted for presenta tion at the MRS Conference in Boston in December 2021.

“Over the course of six weeks, my team and I researched and experimented with alternative concrete materials and production methods which will hopefully make con struction on the lunar surface sustainable and affordable. Besides contributing to research that may benefit the NASA Artemis Program, this internship has also given me the opportunity to meet and collaborate with new people in a creative and welcoming environment, and for that, I am extremely thankful to be a part of this program.”

NEWLY DESIGNATED

Antonio Rossi Memorial Scholarship

Malden Catholic granted Lisbeth Monteagudo ‘25, and David Beauvoir ‘26, two students from Everett, Massachusetts, a newly designated Antonio Rossi Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships are each valued at $9,050 and named for the father of Attorney Anthony Rossi, a graduate of MC’s Class of 1990 and Everett native.

Antonio Rossi was born in Naples, Italy, in 1946 and immigrated to Massachusetts at the age of 20 where he met his wife, Gina (Leo). Mr. and Mrs. Rossi moved to Everett shortly after they married and raised two children. Mr. Rossi worked full time as a metal machinist and sent his two sons, Anthony ’90 and Terigi ‘87, to St. Anthony’s School in Everett and then to Malden Catholic.

Mr. Anthony Rossi ‘90, an Everett native who started as an attorney in Everett almost 25 years ago, launched the inaugu ral scholarship and commented, “My dad believed in Catholic education and worked hard every day to support our family and provide us with an outstanding education from both St. Antho ny’s and MC. From my father, we learned how to focus, apply ourselves every day to our studies and the importance of giving back to the community. I hope my father’s legacy lives on through these scholarships and provides a new generation of hard-working Everett families the opportunity for a great education and a strong foundation for the future. My family’s goal is to continue to grow

Lisbeth Monteagudo ‘25 graduated from St. Anthony’s in Everett and is a high-honors sophomore at MC with a 90 average or above in all classes during her first year at Malden Catholic. David Beauvoir ‘26 is an ‘A’ student who graduated from St. Anthony’s in May of 2022 and is a freshman at Malden Catholic.

Sean Hurley ‘97, Malden Catholic CFO, added, “We thank Mr. Rossi for his commitment to Malden Catholic and inspirational de cision to assist families in Everett. Mr. Rossi has been an incredible benefactor of our school, and we thank him for using his success to help hard-working families from his hometown. MC has had tremendous success over the past several years, and we know that Lisbeth and David will benefit from the personal and professional leadership opportunities that Malden Catholic offers to students.”

MC'S CODIVISIONAL MOCK TRIAL EFFORTS LEAD TO

First State Tournament Championship

March 25th, 2021, was a frustrating day for the Malden Catholic Mock Trial Team. In the Final Four of the state tournament, after two years of inching closer and closer to the final with departures in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight respectively, the team was upended by perennial powerhouse Newton North High School in a trial that captain Lily Baglio ’22 felt the team let slip away. “I was angry,” Lily said, “and I told Mr. Gregory to remember this day because we will win the state championship next year.” Lily and her teammates made good on that goal and brought home the MASSBAR State Championship Revere Bowl to Malden Catholic for the first time in the thirty-six-year tournament history.

As 2022 MASSBAR Mock Trial State Champions, Malden Catholic became the first Catholic high school - and one of only 12 high schools statewide - to capture the championship. Each year, the tournament features over 100 schools assigned a complex case in early November that they will take to trial against other schools throughout the state in January. The tournament begins with a regional round and culminates in a single-elimination, NCAAstyle playoff judged by seasoned attorneys and trial judges in the Massachusetts court system. Every performer is evaluated on in dividual performance - opening, closing, direct exam, cross exam and witness portrayal - and the team with the higher point total emerges victorious, regardless of the trial verdict.

30

Alternating each year between civil and criminal cases, this year’s case, Commonwealth v. Painter, featured a high-profile (fictional) felony murder prosecution brought to Massachusetts Superior Court. The defendant, Clarke Painter, was a local restaurateur alleged to have provided a weapon and driven two friends to a convenience store where an employee known to Painter would be shot dead a few minutes later. Packed with a tangled fact pattern and dubious witness statements, the case turned on Malden Catholic’s student attorney's ability to make clear to the judge in a compelling way whether or not the actions Clarke Painter took amounted to participation as a joint venturer in the armed robbery that led to the shooting death of the convenience store employee.

Captained once again this year by Seniors Lily Baglio ’22 and Emma Pohl ’22 and coached by faculty member Robert Gregory, the team set about in November preparing as no team had done before. “We were fortunate to be guided by an incredible group of seven seniors from our first codivisional class,” said coach Greg ory, “and their experience carried us the entire way.” From more advanced scripting of routines to taking deeper dives into the rules of evidence, the team did everything in their power to raise the standard of an already strong program. Returning members vigorously recruited new members that doubled the size of the team. A formidable scrimmage schedule featuring Wayland High School, Boston Latin School, and perennial friendly rival St. John’s Prep among others sharpened the team’s form early on. No contri butions, however, were more impactful for the team’s success than those of the incredible volunteer coaching staff, which brings to gether generations of the MC family. Lancer alumnus Max Doherty ’17, currently a 3L at Boston College Law School, helmed the team at the October Garden City Invitational Tournament and provided vital guidance throughout the year. MC parents Jeannine R. Rear don, Esq., GC’89 P’23 (Director of Student Leadership Programs), and AUSA Chris Pohl P’22, with assistance from MC grandparent Robert Moran, Esq., helped attorneys polish their lawyering styles throughout the season. Longtime coaches and past MC parents P’10 (current member of the Board of Trustees) and Dan Keating, Esq., P’10, and Matt Regan, Esq., P’11, reprised their familiar roles of “good cop-bad cop,” challenging and encouraging attorneys and witnesses to elevate every facet of their performances. In ad dition, the team was particularly blessed this year to be joined on occasion by the program’s founder, Brother Timothy Hoey, C.F.X., who stepped aside from full-time coaching after the 2015 season. “To have Brother Hoey join us this year was really special,” said coach Max Doherty. “He was the one who got me involved, and this team still lives by his simple motto of have fun. It’s amazing to see the culture that he built still thriving within MC Mock Trial.”

In the state tournament, the team finished a perfect 8-0 on their way to the title. After sweeping their region (4-0), the team sound ly defeated Carver High School and Gann Academy to set up a Final Four showdown against six-time state champion the Winsor School before the Honorable John D. Casey, Chief Justice of the Probate and Family Court of Massachusetts. On defense, Malden Catholic prevailed with high praise from Chief Justice Casey, set ting up its first state championship appearance against three-time State Champion Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School. In the state championship, Malden Catholic rode its defense to victory once again, earning a unanimous 3-0 decision across the three-judge panel.

From the State Championship, it was on to the National Tourna ment for the Lancers, where the top fifty teams across the United States are invited to compete in a friendly, rapid-fire series of trials for which teams have just five weeks to prepare an entirely new case. This time, the case was a civil action brought against a manufacturer of autonomous vehicles in Kalamazoo, Michigan (the tournament’s host city in 2022), following the death of a pedestri an struck in a busy intersection. As “Team Massachusetts,” Malden Catholic prevailed against Rhode Island before litigating tightly contested defeats against returning national champion Maryland and #7 nationally ranked New Mexico. And how did the team feel coming out of its first National Tournament experience? The sentiment was unsurprising:

“We’ll be back!”

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

DEAR FRIENDS:

Just six short years ago our Board made a bold and somewhat controversial decision to launch a free standing Girls Division. As I write to you today, we are the fastest growing Catholic secondary school in New England, having just welcomed 227 incoming 9th graders. Achieving growth of this magnitude during these very challenging times is well beyond even our most aggressive initial projections. Incom ing numbers from both the Girls and Boys Divisions are very encouraging, and we now see ourselves on a trajectory to reach 800 students by this time next year. Our codivisional single gender classroom model has generated wide appeal from a large cross section of communities. Growth of this magnitude is a rarity in Catholic education today. I applaud President Thornburg and his entire team at Malden Catholic for their inspirational leadership.

While it was sad to see Brother Dan Cremin retire this year after 46 years of service, we must reflect on how blessed we were to have had him for almost 5 decades at his beloved Malden Catholic and be thankful to him for the thousands of student lifes he touched. This also gives us reason to pause and remind ourselves of the importance of the Xaverian charism in daily life at MC. The spiritual values of the charism remind us who we are and who we must always be as a community of faith, and we have the Xaverian Brothers to thank for that foundation.

I have never been more excited or encouraged about what the future holds for Malden Catholic. Space is currently at a premium, but with our recent growth comes incredible opportunities to enhance our academic offerings and to expand our campus to truly maximize the student experience both in and outside the classroom. We are currently exploring some incredible and transformational options and hope to be able to share them with you shortly. They will ensure MC sustainability for the next 50 years and beyond!!

At my level one is not enabled to plan for the very best facilities for our students unless he is confident of the unconditional support of all of our benefactors. As always, I offer my personal thanks to parents, faculty and staff, trustees, Malden Catholic alumni, Girls Catholic alumnae, foundations and friends for your unwavering encouragement.

God bless you for all you do for Malden Catholic.

Sincerely,

Richard “Dick” Sumberg ’64 and Lolli Sumberg

“You know how it is: you’re twenty-one or twenty-two and you make some decisions; then whisssh! you’re seventy: you’ve been a lawyer for fifty years, and that white-haired lady at your side has eaten over fifty thousand meals with you” (Our Town, Thornton Wilder, 1938). Fifty-eight years ago, Dick Sumberg ’64, in his role as Stage Manager in Malden Catholic’s production of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, memorized and spoke those lines. You can read all about it in the March 2, 1964, edition of the MC newspaper, Hi-Lite. The paper’s first edition earlier that school year, published November 22, 1963, references

Dick at least five or six times – as the Hi-Lite Business Manager, as vice-president of Senior Homeroom 102, as a member of the National Honor Society, as a varsity runner for Brother Bede and Brother Constant (Myles McManus), and as a varsity debater, where he is photographed with five teammates and moderator Brother Brice. Dick argued for the negative position that year on the topic: “Resolved: That Social Security Benefits should be extended to include complete medical care.”

40
REFLECTING
ON THE PASSAGE OF TIME

Our Town explores the cycle of life and conjures up the fascination of reflecting on the passage of time in one’s life, and how one thing leads to another in sometimes whimsical, often unexpected ways. Looking back, Dick can be well-pleased that his journey has taken many fortuitous turns -- with fifty-two years of devoted marriage to wife Lolli; with two loving, successful children, Katy and Alex; with two grandchildren; and with a very successful career in financial planning and investment management. Malden Catholic can be well-pleased, too, that Dick has been most loyal and generous in his kindnesses to MC over many years!

Born in Detroit in 1946, and now living in Andover, Dick moved in fifth grade to St. Agnes Parish in Reading, MA. When it was time for high school, and the entrance exam date for MC coincided with that of another local Catholic high, Dick’s father made the decision easy. “Take the MC test,” he said. Done!

So, was Dick always the “big man on campus” that we see in the 1963-64 editions of Hi-Lite? Well… no! Dick relates with a chuckle: “I went out for the basketball team in my freshman year. After about 20 minutes into the first tryout, the coach came over and put his arm around my shoulders, and said, ‘Son, I have one word for you.’ I said, ‘Coach, is it VARSITY?’ He said, ‘No… it’s TRACK’”! And that was the start of a fulfilling four-year cross-country and track career, mentored by Coach Brother Bede, whom Dick recalls as his favorite (albeit quirky) teacher of math and physics. Dick appreciates how Brother Bede was always fully committed to his students and athletes.

November 22, 1963, was more than just the publication date of Hi-Lite. It marked the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Dick, though, additionally re members it as the day of his first business setback. He was part of a group of classmates who had taken it upon them selves to improve school spirit, and they decided to do it by selling blue knit hats with “GO MC” emblazoned on the front. Sales were to be at the Friday afternoon football rally before Saturday’s big game. The group went ahead with the minimum 100-piece order through a company right in Malden. Dick relates, “For a reason, I don’t recall, it was my responsibility to pick up the hats the day before the rally. I picked them up and paid for them with my cash savings. I have no memory as to how or why I ended up making the entire investment. They looked great and were ready for sale at the football rally on Friday afternoon. I suspect that because I was the financier of this project, I was the one to pitch the hats on the stage at the rally behind the school building.”

The rally convened, and when it was time for Dick, standing on stage, to sell the hats, “Brother Bede, C.F.X., leaned out the school window next to the speaking platform and announced that Kennedy had been shot. He had not yet been pronounced dead. The crowd was stunned, silence

41

reigned, and all were instructed to go home. I was left standing on the stage, the proud owner of 100 GO MC blue knit hats which could now be worthless. I stowed the box of merchandise in the building and hitchhiked home.” Dick still recalls vividly the bizarre feel of that weekend, the profound loss, the capture of Lee Harvey Oswald, and his murder in plain sight on Saturday TV by Jack Ruby. “Every event in the country was canceled for the weekend. We all stayed home and tried to imagine what was going on and what would happen next. On Monday morning, work and school resumed, and life tried to revert to normal.” Dick’s financial loss, happily, was not long standing: he was able to sell the hats at the next few rallies!

MC produced many great debaters in the ’60s and ’70s. Dick was one of them! “I was on the Debate Team for 4 years. I really enjoyed visiting the local Catholic high schools for debates. I made a number of friends on the other teams. When I joined the BC Debate Team, several of them were my teammates and debating partners. We are still in touch today. MC debate was very valuable to me when I did a lot of public speaking later in my career.” Also valuable was the assistance of Principal Brother Joseph Smithers, who guided Dick and 24 classmates toward matriculation at Boston College, where Dick graduated in 1968 with a degree in economics and history. An MBA at Suffolk University followed in 1974.

By 1992, following 16 years working in his father’s indus trial-supply distribution company, where he learned sales and management skills, Dick had transitioned briefly into insurance and investment and then founded The Financial Advisors LLC in Andover. Over 30 years he grew a highly successful financial planning and investment management practice, which he recently exited by selling to the employ ees he had hired and trained. Dick notes with quiet pride, “When I left at the end of 2021, we served 800 families in two offices and managed just shy of $1 billion. I found it very rewarding to be with families when they made the decisions that impacted their financial lives.”

Along this journey, Dick nurtured his own family, explored the excitement of far-flung world travel and adventurous hobbies, and developed outlets for expressions of care, civ ic engagement and philanthropic support, Malden Catholic among them. A blind date with Lolli Connerton at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival led to the love of his life. Dick recalls, “I went down to Newport, Lolli’s home, to surf with my BC debating partner. He met a girl, and I met Lolli. We are both married to those women today.” Dick has enjoyed 25 snowcat backcountry ski trips to British Columbia with his son Alex, and they have charted sailboats around the world. Dick’s interest in woodworking manifests itself not only in the shop in his basement, where he likes to craft furniture but also in the small sailboat he built with his grandson. They sail it from the beach in Newport.

Dick has been steadily active on various Boards over the years, and Malden Catholic was blessed with his service and counsel for three terms totaling nine years. He is a longtime member of our St. Francis Xavier Society and an early subscriber to our Legacy Giving. Dick appreciates the investment of a Malden Catholic education and encourages others toward that understanding too: at MC, “I learned how to get along with a much wider range of people than I was exposed to before MC. If a student works hard and takes advantage of what the school has to offer, he or she will get a good education and a strong start in life.”

Inspired by the great educational environment he sees at MC, and the synergy between faculty, staff and students, Dick reminds us, “I have yet to see a family that experi enced financial ruin because of the cost of educating their kids. I have seen families that struggle because their mem bers did not get a good education. Investing in education is always a winner.” In touting the value of estate planning, Dick shares, “If you are a donor to charitable organizations during your lifetime, the gifts stop at your death. A gift to an organization’s endowment continues your annual support to the organization forever. When you move to ‘the other side of the grass,’ you have one last opportunity to impact the world you are leaving, and you only get that opportunity once…don’t miss it.”

No wiser words were spoken by Thornton Wilder’s Stage Manager, reviewing the lives of simple souls at Grover’s Corners, NH, where his wisdom was that all too often, we miss the beauty of the life we have, that we miss the extraordinary in the ordinary, that we fail to appreciate what we have before it is too late. How wonderful that Dick and Lolli have made it their quest to do otherwise! We thank them for this goodness.

MOVING ON TO BIGGER

THINGS

Story of Dan Passacantilli ’90, a North End Wonder!

Few records last forever. Sooner or later someone always comes along to set a new standard. Dan Passacantilli ’90, however, lays claim to two 36-year-old Malden Catholic records, and there’s a good possibility they will be his forever! They’re not in athletics, though Dan wore the blue-and-gold for four years on the MC gridiron. He played in the newly built 1986 grass field, Brother Gil bert Stadium. He also competed for two years for MC basketball. These special records, though, are more a measure of his heart and a marker of his personality. Dan Passacantilli is the young est donor in Malden Catholic history, and he is the only student almost to be thrown out of school before even the first day of formal classes! Let’s explain.

Picture nine conservatively dressed men, most in their mid-30s, several older, filing into Felicia’s North End restaurant in 1986.

Conventioneers? Former Bruins? Celebrating Celtics? No… Xave rian Brothers out for an annual end-of-summer community meal. Among them were new MC Headmaster Brother Robert Sullivan ’45, Assistant Headmaster Brother Thomas Puccio, Assistant Head master Brother Edward Bozzo and faculty members Brother Dan Cremin and Brother Tim Hoey. Their busboy: Dan Passacantilli. Though most faces were still unfamiliar to Dan, now in his fresh man year, he did recognize Brother Cremin and then made the connection with the others. Soon, several bottles of delicious red wine arrived at the table, compliments of Dan. Thus, Dan became the youngest donor in Malden Catholic history and started a lifelong friendship with Brother Sullivan and a caring relationship with the Xaverian Brothers!

The second “record,” which Dan recalls as one of his most mem orable Malden Catholic experiences, goes back again to his fresh man year. Dan shared this story himself while addressing guests at a lavish party he hosted this summer at The Newbury, Boston. The occasion was the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Dan’s technol ogy firm, Blue Front Technology Group. In thanking some of the over 200 family members, personal friends and business associ ates for the roles they had played in his life and in his business, he singled out MC’s English Department Chair and longtime Summer School Director Ms. Angela Lee. He thanked her for “not throwing him out of MC before he had even started”! Dan went on to explain that as an orientation prerequisite of his attending MC, he was to participate in some summer classes. He had not, however, adequately mastered many of the subtleties of good classroom decorum. He soon found himself sitting in Ms. Lee’s office with his mom and dad, explaining why he should not be attending East Boston High School. Happily, Ms. Lee saw Dan’s promise and gave him a second chance.

Recalling that experience reminded Dan that it was not easy for a kid like him from the North End to transition to “suburban” Mal den. Born in Boston, and still living in the North End today, Dan grew up on the lower end of Hanover Street with brother Stephen ’93 and sister Alissa in a tightly knit Italian community, perhaps unlike any other in the country. With the aroma of Italian gravy wafting from open windows, as a child, he would make his way just four doors down to #424, the Blue Front Restaurant (in whose

46

honor he named his company). There Dan would join his cousins to work with the owners – his grandmother and grandfather – to make the place a favorite gathering spot in the neighborhood. The North End was a special place! To outsiders, it could seem like a foreign country, but for Dan, it was the place that gave him his edge!

Dan had no previous ties with Malden Catholic. His grandfather was a BC High grad, but Dan and his parents, comfortable with MC’s family feel and the Xaverian Brothers’ approach to academ ics and athletics, were convinced that Malden Catholic would be his best fit. Other family members were soon among our alums: brother Stephen ’93, as well as cousins Paul ’94 and Robert Pas sacantilli ’06. For a 14-year-old, getting from Boston to Malden every day was not quick nor easy, so Dan was glad to have the company of a close friend, fellow 8th-grader and North End neighbor Mike Dello Russo ’90. First, the train to Sullivan Station, then, the bus up Broadway, picking up more MC students along the way, including good friend Ben D'Agostino ’90 and a heartily welcomed contingent of Pope John girls. Finally, a long walk through Stewart’s parking lot would get them to Crystal Street. Dan recalls, “Back then it was an even longer trip culturally than geographically.” Being at MC was “a completely different expe rience for a kid from the North End, from an Italian immigrant enclave.” MC was his first encounter with organized team sports; the first time surrounded by kids who lived in houses instead of apartment buildings. He was amazed that classmates had never had a good meatball sub; surprised that he would hang out at night with MC friends at Melrose’s Mt. Hood Golf Course. He did not shy away from new experiences and was soon the president of the MC Ski Club on his way to Innsbruck, Austria, and Interlak en, Switzerland, with Brother Joe Britt’s Ski Club.

Faculty favorites for Dan included social studies teacher Mr. Rick Mazzei and Dean of Discipline Mr. Tom Arria. “I was in his office a lot,” Dan confesses! It was a special honor, however, when Malden Catholic presented Dan with the 2015 Brother Robert Sullivan Medal. From that first time at Felicia’s, Dan had found in Brother Sullivan an inspirational friend and role model. Brother Sullivan and Dan indeed shared many “mandated” chats, when Dan had been directed to his office, but those were gateways to respect and to a lasting relationship. Brother Sullivan’s empathy always tilted in the direction of the student. Anytime Dan spoke with Brother Sullivan, he could expect sharp insight, straight-talk and a challenge to grow. Brother Sullivan mixed piercing honesty with sage advice and no lack of humor. Dan was pleased to invite Brother Sullivan to participate at his wedding and was happy that he could attend subsequent christenings for Dan’s children, Adri ana and Martino. Following a post-graduate year in Vermont, Dan attended the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business. Thereafter, he spent considerable time in South Florida, where he has an office.

As a young businessman, Dan cut his teeth with the telephone company XO Communications for four years. Thanks to the Tele com Act of 1996, authored by then-Congressman Ed Markey (MC ‘64) a newly deregulated industry opened doors to whole new sectors of the marketplace. Dan decided to go on his own. Blue Front Technology Group resulted, and Dan’s acumen, powerful client engagement and incredible work ethic grew it to one of the largest telecom and technology agencies in the Northeast. Though he claims that “work is my only hobby,” he is an avid Bos ton sports fan, beachgoer and traveler, often making it to Miami

and Ft. Lauderdale for University of Miami football games. He is also a regular attendee and supporter of the annual Heisman Trophy Trust Gala, as a guest of 1992 Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta.

Dan’s appreciation for Malden Catholic has grown over the years. Even soon after college, he could tell that MC had put him ahead in the game. “You see that you’ve come from a non-elitist institu tion with strong values, respect for others and a gritty, real-world approach. You can work with people and apply street smarts. You can’t teach street smarts, but we at MC had it in spades!” He also learned from MC that, “Wherever you are in life, whatever your station, you’re not precluded from ‘pushing through’ on to bigger things!” He’s thankful to Malden Catholic for its history of “taking students where they are and moving them ahead.” Dan recogniz es that “Malden Catholic has been a great home for economically lower-and-middle-class students with grit and guts, providing them with a far richer experience than they might otherwise have had.” He points out, “Of all your philanthropic interests, you won’t get a better return of investment than with MC!”

Dan’s generous heart at Felicia’s and the spirit, determination and resilience with which he met the challenges of his high school journey, augured well for the man he would become. He did not disappoint! Malden Catholic today takes pride in Dan’s character, successes and loyalty, just as the school once took care in nurtur ing the young man. We suspect that when, someday in the distant future, he steps onto God’s winner’s platform, it will be with a North End wisecrack and at least two MC records still intact. As Dan left Crystal Street this past June following the celebration of Brother Dan’s retirement, he could be heard offering Brother Puccio a North End invitation, “You oughta leave Melrose now and then, Brother; see how the real Italians live!”

I would not be here without the tremendous support I have received from Malden Catholic scholarships. Thank you! I will repay your kindness one day."

Board Designated Funds

Creating a Board Designated Fund ensures that a Malden Catholic education will remain affordable and attainable for generations of students at Malden Catholic. With an initial gift of $25,000, an individual, group or a family may establish a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income annually in financial aid; the size of the corpus may be increased at any time. Malden Catholic is grateful for those who have created and continue to support these funds. Contributions made in FY 22 are referenced under each fund’s name.

Antonette Port GC ’54

In his 1961 presidential inaugural address, John F. Kennedy stirred the country with his iconic, penetrating statement: “Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country!” He called all Americans to civic duty, challenged each to contribute to the public good, and announced the formation of the Peace Corps. Antonette Port (GC ’54), steeped in the idealism of the mo ment and the values and spirit of service she had learned at Girls Catholic, heard Kennedy’s call to action. She was on the phone the next day, saying that she and her husband Richard would like to apply for the Peace Corps. The polite receptionist at the other end said that applications had not yet even been printed, but that when they were, she would send one along to Antonette. Not long after, Antonette and Richard had applied, they were accepted, and after seven weeks of training, they found themselves in the Oval Office of the White House speaking to President Kennedy as the “first couple” to leave the U.S. as members of the Peace Corps!

That started for Antonette and Richard two years as volunteers teaching in Ghana, West Africa, and a life-long adventure in ministry and education. For Antonette, it was a “continuation” in education. Following her days at Girls

Catholic, after two years of teacher-training college in Baltimore, and while enrolled in Boston College evening classes, she began teaching 1st and 2nd Grade at the Immaculate Conception School in Malden (1957-61). While at BC, she met Richard, a BC High graduate, who also en rolled in the night school. Now married 62 years, they still delight in one another’s company and enjoy the amenities of Peabody’s Brooksby Village.

While in Ghana, they had the thrill of helping to start a rural secondary school where there had been none and of developing the English fluency of their students. Antonette was impressed by the Africans’ voracious eagerness to learn and by their zealous receptivity to instruction. Upon completion of her two-year Peace Corps commitment, Antonette and her husband both earned a master’s degree at Columbia University Teachers College. She discovered that returned Peace Corps volunteers were highly desired for their unique skills and experiences. In 1965 she and Richard went to Nigeria to work with a Harvard-led team developing a modern secondary school in Nigeria based on the American model rather than on the colonial British model of education that had been in place. There they developed successful methods for teaching English as

82

ASK

a second language and devised a curriculum for English language acquisition. Not long after, in 1967, the couple was invited to Hawaii for curriculum development projects there. They remained in Hawaii for 52 years!

For 30 years, Antonette worked jointly with the Hawaii Department of Education and the University of Hawaii in curriculum development and teacher training. She also enjoyed running the after-school religious education program for local children in her parish of St. Peter and Paul in Honolulu. Most especially though, Antonette enjoyed her 20 years serving as Co-Director of the parish’s Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults program, the process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. She recalls, “It was very satisfying, a real highlight for me because I got to see and hear how religious belief impacted the lives of people.” She helped over 200 people embrace Catholicism. During these years, Richard also nur tured a religious calling, becoming a Permanent Deacon. “When the Permanent Diaconate was re-instituted in Hawaii in 1977,” says Antonette, “Richard was proud to be in the first class ordained there in 1981.” Together, they’ve been quite a team! She mentions, “My husband and I have always worked together,” and adds with a smile, “He does pretty well on his own, but I respond to his sermons and homilies at his request from a parishioner’s perspective.”

Born in Malden and raised by practicing Catholics, Antonette had little doubt about where she would go to high school! Neither did sisters Mary, GC ’53 and Tillie, GC ’56 and Malden Catholic brothers Robert Tramondozzi ’58 (football Hall of Famer) and John Tramondozzi ’60 (Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Curry College). She recalls fondly the annual May crowning of the Blessed Mother and the pleasure of singing with Sister Alexia’s Glee Club. She remembers appreciatively that her venerable “senior home room teacher, Sister Jude, was wonderful in her care and support of all,” even to the point of making sure that every graduate had a summer job! Care, community concern and servant leadership seem to be the common elements in Antonette and Richard’s life trajectories beginning in their formative high school years. Today’s generation of Malden Catholic boys and girls can look toward Antonette and Richard as models of service who answered President Kennedy’s summon: “With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.” We thank them for this legacy and their support of Malden Catholic.

The Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Legacy Society

In 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making gifts through bequests, life income arrangements and other planned gifts. In 2022, Malden Catholic renamed the school’s planned giving society to honor the legacy of Brother Gilbert Cairnes, C.F.X., first Headmaster of Malden Catholic. As one who left an indelible mark on Malden Catholic, Brother Gilbert, a native of Somerville, was a gifted teacher and a born communicator with a keen understanding of the young and a deep interest in their concerns. To his fellow Xaverian Brothers and to the members of the MC community, Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., was and continues to be an inspiration. Throughout his tenure at Malden Catholic his limitless store of amusing anecdotes served as a vehicle for an inspirational message, while his listening skills lent an added grace to a life genuinely ded icated to the hospitable acceptance of others. Alumni and friends honor the great legacy of Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., as the school's stadium and MC's National Honor Society Chapter are named after him. As Malden Catholic continues to grow and develop to meet the needs of today’s students and families through the school’s Legacy Society, we remember and we honor Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., who modeled so well the motto of the Xaverian Brothers, “In Harmony Small Things Grow.”

When you join the Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Legacy Society, you demonstrate your commitment to the current and future students at Malden Catholic High School. Your planned gift is a wonderful way to honor the dedication and commitment of the Xaverian Brothers and Malden Catholic’s dedicated lay teachers. A planned gift is an inspiration to future generations and a reminder of the philanthropy that sustains Malden Catholic High School. By giving back through a bequest or a planned gift, Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Society members demonstrate a lasting dedication and loyalty that transcends time and helps to build a strong and viable infrastructure for future generations.

Members of the Brother Gilbert, C.F.X., Society have indicated in writing that they have made special provisions for Malden Catholic in their estate plans. In addition to being a meaningful gift to MC, planned giving helps to reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains and federal estate taxes for the donors. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant for more details on arranging for a planned gift and the personal benefits associated with that charitable gift.

MC Athletics

ATHLETICS

The Malden Catholic 2021-22 school year was filled with numerous outstanding individual and team accomplishments. This amazing year is even more memorable when taking into account the tremendous rebound after the pandemic year, which was filled with restrictions and limited schedules. The Lancers were ready to return to action when the season reopened, and the results speak for themselves.

RETURN TO ACTION

As the season opened, restrictions were lifted, and for the first time in over a year, Malden Catholic saw a full slate of action at MIAA competitions on the fields, courts and ice. The excitement experienced at each home event was palpable. It was also very special to see the monumental support of the entire community, as MC earned another consecutive MIAA Excellence in Sportsmanship acknowledgment at the MIAA Sportsmanship Summit held at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

Along with the first graduating class of MC girls, Malden Catholic’s female athletes and several of the girl’s programs made profound statements at the newly formed Girls Catholic Conference, as Lancers earned several conference titles and deep state tournament records.

Girls Indoor Track & Field had a phenomenal run with Coach Leone at the helm and hung Conference Banners. Several indi viduals and teams created legacy success stories by establishing both personal records and school records. Girls Basketball, under the leadership of Coach Keane, had a historic 21-2 run and finished a perfect 6-0 in conference action. The girls also saw a big win on the parquet floor at TD Garden defeating Cardinal Spellman. In the spring season, Coach LaRosa and the softball team took home the conference title finishing 13-7 overall and 6-1 in conference play during their second year of varsity action.

STATE CHAMPIONS

A year off from full competition during COVID-19 did not impact the success of the boys’ basketball program. The Lancers wrote a chapter in MC history by capturing the school’s first basketball MIAA DII State Championship. Led by Coach John Walsh '98, the team defeated Norwood High School at the UMass Lowell’s Tsongas Arena and finished the season 22-2 (8-2 in Catholic Conference play) and had home court throughout the Division II tournament, which resulted in earning #1 seed.

The Lancers surged into the tournament and knocked off Nauset High School, Agawam High School, North Quincy High School, and Scituate High School before defeating #7 Norwood High School in the title game and earned their State Championship hardware and championship rings with a police and fire escort through Malden.

NEW COACHES

We welcome the following new coaches to Crystal St. as they lead their teams into the 2022–2023 season of MC sports.

Joe Gaff returns as the Varsity Football coach. A successful history in the Catholic Conference will help bolster the gridiron crew on Donovan field this fall. A longtime MC swim coach, Gaff will remain in that role as well.

Bailey Chiccuarelli will make the transition from assistant girls’ volleyball coach to the head role as the Lancers look to compete in the state tournament again this fall.

Seamus McGuire was named the Varsity Boys Lacrosse coach after serving as assistant coach to the Lancers last season and has the team heading in the right direction.

Alexa Hingston will lead the Lancers on the ice. A very experienced and successful hockey player herself (AP, St. Anselm’s) and previous head coach at Reading High School, Coach Hingston will look to lead the girl’s hockey program to tournament action while returning a strong group of skaters.

Michael O'Connor, fresh off his retirement as both an MC teacher and boys golf coach, returned and made history as Malden Catholic added the first girl's golf program in school history. Made up of all underclassmen in their ’22 spring campaign, these Lancers are poised to be a strong program next season.

LANCER HONORS

It did not take long for Tony Felder ’22 to mark his place in MC history. With his first basket of the season, Tony became the eleventh individual at Malden Catholic to record 1000 points in their basketball career, finishing with 1576 points total. Student-athletes like Tony do not come around often. Named to the Top 5 Dream Team as one of the finest players in the state, Tony is a three time recipient of Boston Globe and Boston Herald All Scholastic Team and Catholic Conference All-Star honors. A standout performer since day one, when he arrived to play for then head coach Jim McCune, he will be remem bered as one of the best athletes in the history of MC Basketball. He was a leader on the court who had an undying commit ment to chasing his goals. On March 19th, 2022, he led his team with 38 points and accomplished one of his goals, bringing the first-ever, MIAA Division II State Championship home to Crystal Street. Tony embodies the values of the Xaverian Brothers' charism in his daily life: values of humility, trust, compassion, simplicity and zeal. Tony was the recipient of the 2022 Christie Serino Extraordinary Achievement Award.

BROTHER GILBERT, C.F.X., LEGACY SOCIETY

Marie (Helmick) Barry

Marie (Helmick) Barry, grandmother of Zachary Barry ’19 and mother of MC’s Senior Director of Technology, Raymond Barry ’P19, made provisions in her will that upon her death, Charitable Gifts would be made to several Catholic organizations, including Malden Catholic. As a product of Catholic education, Marie knew firsthand the value and importance of receiving a Catholic education during one’s formative years. Marie used part of her estate to help Zachary attend Merrimack College, where he is pursuing a Master of Education in Teacher Education in History. Marie was so impressed with the education that Zachary received at Malden Catholic that she changed her estate documents to include a sizable charitable gift to Malden Catholic.

Marie J. (Helmick) Barry, “Rie” of Peabody, MA, and formerly of Winchester, MA, passed away on June 9, 2021. Born August 2, 1928, in Miami Beach, FL, to Alice Cecelia (Clancy) and Raymond Glen Helmick, Marie was the eldest of three children. Sister of the late Rev. Raymond G. Helmick, S.J., of Chestnut Hill, Marie is survived by her brother Monsignor William M. Helmick of Boston and previously Pastor at St. Teresa of Avila in West Roxbury. Marie grew up in Arlington, where she attended St. Agnes Elementary and Junior High School. She then attended St. John the Evangelist High School in North Cambridge and graduated in 1946 with the highest honors and was Valedictorian. Marie went on to attend Emmanuel College and graduated in 1950 with a B.A. in Chemistry. Marie received an M.S. in Biology from Boston College in 1955.

Marie began her career working at the M.I.T. Physics Department’s Radioactivity Center in 1950, where she conducted research in bone metabolism and co-authored three research papers. In 1957, Marie joined a newly formed company, New England Nuclear Corporation. As Manager, Radioassay Laboratory, Marie developed the lab from an internal service to a profitable consulting lab, which for a time was the largest income producer of the young company. Recently married, Marie left NEN in 1963 to raise

a family. Once Marie’s two children had finished elementary school, Marie was eager to return to work. Marie resumed working as a contract technical writer at M.I.T. 's Program in Industrialization of the Housing Sector, where she coordinated interdisciplinary research and edited materials from professionals and students. Marie next worked for Radcliffe Programs in Health Care, where she utilized her technical writing skills and analyzed admissions applica tions to furnish a student profile. In 1977, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA, hired Marie as their first Health Systems Analyst. Marie was able to utilize her technical writing and analytical skills to write several Determination of Need Applications that enabled the hospital to expand its campus and add service offerings. Additionally, Marie’s detailed analyses of patient admissions, demographics and market trends etc. were used by the Executive Leadership Team for making important and strategic decisions. Marie also served on several Mass. Health Data Consortium Committees, where her detailed analytical work was praised by her colleagues. Marie retired in 1996, or so we thought. Even in “retirement,” Marie found ways to keep her mind busy. While a resident at Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA, Marie served on their Resident Advisory Committee for two terms and on a Health & Wellness Committee. At the time of Marie’s passing, she was still an active member of both committees.

As a grandparent of a Malden Catholic student, Marie knew that Malden Catholic embodied her strong Catholic beliefs and convictions and that these were nurtured and rein forced daily throughout her grandson’s MC experience. For this reason, through her estate Marie has chosen to honor Malden Catholic High School and the commitment of the Xaverian Brothers and dedicated lay faculty and staff with an estate gift providing essential financial support for moti vated and hard-working students today and for the future. Malden Catholic is most grateful to Mrs. Marie (Helmick) Barry for her tremendous generosity in strengthening the ability of Malden Catholic to provide our students with the life-lasting impact of the MC experience.

Time Capsule

The first issue of the Girls Catholic school newspaper, The Ricardian, named for Immaculate Conception’s Monsignor Richard Neagle, appeared in May 1933 featuring short stories, poetry, class wills and prophecies, as well as reports of activities. By the early ’40s and extending through the ’60s the newspaper became a joint venture, published Quarterly by the students of Girls Catholic and Malden Catholic. During that time, The Ricardian was a regular 1st-Place winner at the Columbia Press Convention. We present snippets of The Ricardian here to celebrate our history and to marvel at “the way we were”!

The boys and girls of Malden Catholic for the 2020-21 school year experienced a world in turmoil with normal routines up ended by pandemic challenges. As traumatic as that year had been for them, it was not the first time MC/GC students faced world calamity with courage – as you will find in one of the items here from the February 1942 edition of The Ricardian, two months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

ON DECEMBER 7 (AUTHOR)

On December 7, 1941, the forces of the Rising Sun attacked without warning America’s far-flung outposts in the Pacific. On December 8, the feast day of the Queen of Peace, the United States of America declared war on the Empire of Japan. This declaration shocked the entire populace which believed that Japanese representatives in Washington were doing their utmost to bring about a peaceful settlement of the Far Eastern problems. In reality, though, this gesture by Kurusu and his henchmen cloaked the true intention of the Japanese government. Their unwarranted attack and destruction of American lives and property will be recorded in the annals of history as the most dastardly deed ever perpetrated by a foreign country - for even in war there is some code of honor.

Undoubtedly, some high school students, reading about the war, have passed it off lightly, saying, “Well, this conflict, raging thousands of miles away in the vast Pacific, cannot affect me.” But they are wrong. The stark realization of the nearness of this war struck us as the entire student body attended Mass for our former classmate, Joseph Maloney, killed in action at Pearl Harbor, as it was thought. But a later cablegram announced his safety.

Yes, indeed, their whole lives will be affected, for soon many of these youths will be leaving high school to face a world disrupted by a conflagration the magnitude of which is almost impossible to comprehend. They will become the nucleus of our vast army, navy, air force, and industrial might.

Fortunately, we who leave M. C. H. S. will be better prepared to meet this turbulent world than other youths. For four full years we have been trained in the principles that there is something far more important than material

greatness, that there is no such thing as an invincible, all-powerful dictator, that we are nothing but insignificant creatures on this battle-scarred earth. Since our moral fiber has been strengthened by this splendid training, we will not cower in fear or complain in times of disaster or pessimism, but we will go forward in battle trusting always in our God and in our Government.

SIXTH ANNUAL PROM HELD IN LYNNFIELD

The Happy Valley Country Club, Lynnfield, was the festive scene of the boys' sixth annual Junior Prom. Over 75 cou ples danced to the syncopated rhythms of Bert Edward’s orchestra. Plaques of the Blessed Virgin Mary were present ed to the young ladies as a memo of the occasion.

Class president Howard Smith and Ruth Gilligan led the grand march. Another never-to-be-forgotten incident was the duet of “You Are My Sunshine” by Bill Cosgrove and John La Rossiere. Mr. and Mrs. John J. Kelly chaperoned the affair. The committee in charge of the Prom was John Spencer, John P. Hughes, Jr., Howard Smith, John Mallon, John La Rossiere, John Hurley, Thomas Menton, Thomas Borgan, Charles Kelly, assisted by Brothers Anton and Armand, C.F.X., as advisors.

THERE’S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: GALA SENIOR DANCE HELD IN MARYHALL

Shy lads met vivacious lassies; shy lassies met debonair lads. Where and when did this occur? Why, Friday night, Dec. 5, at Maryhall. All the Seniors joined forces to make

104

merry under the auspices of the Blessed Virgin, who was presented with a bouquet of roses by the Senior A Class president, Marie Dillon. Sodality Prefect, Rosemary Nicholson, and senior class president Bill Cosgrove led the Grand March. We were happy at the response of the senior students.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

No, I am not going to talk about the destruction in the Philippines nor the treachery in Japan, nor the battles on the Pacific – for a change I am going to talk about you and me, about what we are doing for the U.S., about what we should be doing, and about what we shall be doing. You think, perhaps, that we who are merely high school students cannot be of much benefit in matters of such overwhelming gravity. But you are wrong! It is because we ARE merely high school students that we Can be of much benefit. It is because we are YOUNG and UNWORLDLY that we can look at this thing not with suspicion and cynicism but with frankness and honesty. It is because we are ENERGETIC and ENTHUSIASTIC that we can fight and lose, and fight and lose, and still be willing to try again.

Today, once more, a hideous evil, more enduring that time itself, more powerful than any law or principle of honor, stronger than the strongest mechanism of man has

caught a weary world napping and is now fondling it in an embrace of culpable disaster. Such a time has entered our lives, yours and mine – and we are a part of it. We are members. We belong. To us remains only the task of proving our worth. This can be done by, first of all, respect ing the wishes and demands of our government and by co-operating in every way with the officials of our city.

One of the first and most effective ways in which we can accomplish this is by buying U.S. Defense Bonds and by contributing to the American Red Cross. Then, too, we shall endeavor to learn something about first aid and study the rules printed now in newspapers and magazines regarding precautionary methods in an air raid. But perhaps the most important means of assistance is a spirit of willingness to help, eagerness to learn and unselfishness to give. And that spirit we have!

Yes, you and I may be merely high school students, but being that, we possess those enviable qualities of youth that are so vitally essential and so desperately needed today – the simple laugh, the indefatigable enthusiasm, the youthful American spirit that are yours and mine.
