Letter from the Headmaster Greetings from Malden Catholic! It is with great pleasure that I greet you in our latest issue of Crystal Hi-Lites. It is an honor to begin my second year as Headmaster of Malden Catholic. We rejoice in our partnership with you. This past year has had unprecedented challenges, and you have stood with us every step of the way. The MC community has risen to the challenge and excelled in providing an excellent education for all students in the Xaverian Brothers' tradition. I am very thankful for all of your support. Strong donor support fueled Malden Catholic’s efforts to offer innovative learning experiences when we moved to remote learning. Moving from the classroom to a virtual environment was unexpected. While 4

many schools struggled, Malden Catholic was able to pivot and provide academic courses beyond what other schools could offer in our area. This was largely due to the outstanding faculty and staff who quickly adapted to meet the needs of our families. The spring presented obstacles, but we completed all coursework and were able to hold an in-person graduation in August. We were one of the first schools to begin the process of developing a well thoughtout plan to return to the building in the fall. A great deal of work was done over the summer, which resulted in our plans to develop a Culture of Health, improve the building's ventilation and signage and acquire the technology needed to teach in any model (remote, hybrid). We spent

close to $500,000 on these efforts. Our fall return has been seamless, and we hear from our families time and time again that our model surpasses that of other schools in the area. One parent commented the other day, “My son is having one of his best years academically and in athletics.” Malden Catholic continues to offer strong programming. Our commitment to our students in the MC tradition is why we have one of the largest enrollments in the past 10 years. We welcomed over 190 new students this past fall. Our total enrollment stands at 662 students. The retention rate for the Boys Division is 98% with the girls’ retention just under that. Our faculty and staff retention has greatly improved since my arrival as well, with only a handful of individuals not returning. All of this signals that great things are happening at Malden Catholic, and there are amazing things still to come! We would not be here without your unwavering support. One important change I made this past spring was move to a one-principal model. We welcomed Mrs. Rose Maria Redman as the principal of MC for both the Boys and Girls Divisions. She has brought a lifetime of educational experience, and both of our divisions are thriving under her leadership. Brother Puccio, who served

for many years as our boys’ principal, now holds the position of the Director of Mission Integration. In this role, he advises all of us on how best to execute our mission as a Catholic school in the Xaverian tradition. He has already brought a lot to the school in this important role. So much of 2020 has been unprecedented. Despite the many unexpected obstacles, due to Malden Catholic’s vibrant Culture of Philanthropy, we have been able to come together and ensure that, above all, our students continue to receive the best education possible. You are to thank for making this happen. It is because of your commitment to Malden Catholic that we continue to persevere through these challenging times. The information contained in the following pages serves as an account of those who have taken their resources and demonstrated their indelible commitment to our Mission. I encourage you to take time to page through and learn about them. We celebrate the entire Malden Catholic community in these pages. Thank you again for all you do for us, John K. Thornburg

Class of 2020 Graduation On Saturday, August 1, Malden Catholic High School celebrated the 85th Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020. Following all guidelines established by the state and national health organizations, Malden Catholic hosted a live graduation on Donovan Field at the Brother Gilbert Stadium with over 400 graduates, family members, faculty and staff in attendance. Of the 97 Malden Catholic graduates, 80 families were present and socially distanced on the football field. The ceremony started with a prayer and warm welcome by Brother Thomas Puccio, the Boys Division Principal. Ciro Carbone of Everett, MC Salutatorian, then delivered an address and commented on the highlights of his four-year journey of growth and his classmates’ milestone accomplishments as a result of the outstanding education at Malden Catholic. After the conferral of diplomas by Headmaster John Thornburg, Brother Puccio and Assistant Principals Jeffrey Smith ’95 and Robert Bucchino ’71, Valedictorian Michael Sekenski presented a moving speech regarding endurance and resiliency in a COVID-19 world. The Class of 2020 top awards were also presented to the following 2020 graduates: Ty Blumberg, Jose Ordonez, Gavin Sadler, James Guinee and Jake Morrow. We are so proud of our graduating Class of 2020!

Lancer Healthcare Frontline Heroes DE NNIS C ATALDO, MC’86 Vice-President, Cataldo Ambulance Service When Dennis Cataldo became President of the Massachusetts Ambulance Association this past January, he could not have imagined how dramatically the demands of his role and of the industry would escalate in the coming months. But the same tenacity that placed him at the helm of one of New England’s largest ambulance services, and the same commitment to patient care and making a difference in people’s lives that attracted him to the business, has been a steady anchor in turbulent times! A 1986 graduate of Malden Catholic, now living in Lynnfield with wife Christine and triplet sons, Dennis earned his B.S. in Business Management in 1990 from Suffolk University. He minored in marketing. He soon became an integral part of the company started by his parents in 1977. Cataldo and (affiliate) Atlantic Ambulance provide emergency services, primary backup services, as well as medical transportation to a number of nursing homes, hospitals and other medical facilities throughout the Greater Boston and North Shore areas. They offer primary 911 EMS services and backup coverage to over 27 communities. Since the start of the pandemic, Dennis has noticed “lots and lots of anxiety” in the business. He notes that the situation is novel, and it comes with an information overload, much of it repetitive. Through it all, he says, “Interpreting the risk to our staff is paramount. We have to have them healthy in order to maintain services

for all those in need. I am on conference calls daily. Everyone is talking about best practices and preparing for the surge. The early days of the pandemic caused everyone to figure out how to stay healthy, anticipate what was coming next, and find the financial resources needed to maintain operations, a critical concern for all private ambulance services." Dennis is doing his best navigating the stress of caring for 800 staff. “I fear for all of them. It’s more responsibility than one might want to have at the moment, but that is what makes everyone in healthcare and EMS different: when everyone wants to run from a crisis, we all are there to run in.” One striking example of this is in Dennis’ noble response to a call for assistance from the State of New York several months ago. “New York,” Dennis recalls, was “a bit ahead of us in the crisis. They had over 20,000 confirmed cases with the virus when we still had only 2,000. The federal agencies put together a plan to address the very serious conditions occurring in NY. We were asked to assist, and within 72 hours we had 5 fully staffed ambulances en route to New York City.” The crews there did well, witnessing many conditions that eventually surfaced here and throughout the nation, straining hospitals and resources. Currently President of the Massachusetts Ambulance Association, in constant daily contact with Board members, Dennis has served in a wide variety of civic, charitable, and voluntary roles, including his active service with our Malden Catholic Board of 19

"What makes everyone in healthcare and EMS different: when everyone wants to run from a crisis, we all are there to run in." Trustees. He has also been President of the Winthrop Rotary, President of the Malden Chamber of Commerce, and 2014 recipient of the prestigious St. George National Award from the American Cancer Society. His annual Cataldo Ambulance Service Swing for Hope, a highly successful day-long golf event, started in 1993, has raised over $750,000, all of which has been donated to the fight against cancer. Though pleased that many people have come to take a “longer and harder look at how serious this situation is,” he is concerned that “not everyone understands the overall danger.” He hopes that people will do the right thing, limit contacts and follow available guidelines. Until we see the end of this, we can be sure that Dennis will be fueled by the care for others that brought him to the field and by the good he sees around him. “I do love,” he says, “the people who are so committed to patient care, the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives and the ability I have to oversee so many worthwhile endeavors.” Keep up the great work, Dennis! Plus Ultra!

SCOT T E LIA S, MC’96 Emergency Room Technician at Beth Israel Lahey Health There was a time when Scott Elias was the envy of every student at Malden Catholic. He was MC’s first-ever male cheerleader on a squad of otherwise all female counterparts! Today, as Boys Head Varsity Soccer Coach, he’s the envy of those many Lancer alums who have longed to be at the 20

helm as coach of an MC team. While still in high school and trained as a lifeguard and CPR instructor, Scott started along a path directing him toward his current medical field. Assuming that emergency training would come in handy in working as a coach with young adults, he took a college EMT course, and by 2000 Scott had earned his EMT license. Scott started working on an ambulance in 2008, and by 2010 Scott had decided to turn his attention to emergency room care. He began his work as Emergency Room Technician at Beth Israel Lahey Health, where he is currently employed. One can also find Scott working as an EMT at Fenway Park. Scott explains that among those he meets across the Boston medical landscape these days there is fear and uncertainty. He commented, “People are scared. We are very fortunate to have some of the best hospitals in the country in Boston, but there is a lot of uncertainty around COVID-19. All we can do is help comfort and support

any patients who walk through our doors.” Scott is happy to report that he is doing well personally, and he attributes some of this well-being not only to supportive family and friends, but also to the great teamwork of fellow workers who are called on to make daily, sometimes dramatic, adjustments in how they do things. “It is a different time,” says Scott, “in the emergency room. Every day we have new protocols, and things are constantly changing. It is amazing sight to see how everyone comes together every day to do their part to help care for not only the patients that walk through our doors, but also each other.” Even in these trying times, Scott is happy he can be in a position to help others. “All we can do,” he says, “as a hospital and community is our best to keep everyone safe.” He urges all of us to follow the guidelines we have been given. MC counts itself fortunate that our student-athletes have every day a role model like Scott to remind that each of us is called to care.

ADAM ANNABLE , MC’06 Unit Coordinator, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital "My English teacher from my junior year at MC, Mr. Rockwell,” Adam recalls, “had this brilliant way of connecting with me. I was the kind of kid who struggled to meet expectations when faced with material that didn’t interest and/or challenge me. He saw this in me… and actually designed and taught me an entire curriculum apart from my classmates’ that was comprised of all material that he believed would interest, challenge and excite me.” He also helped Adam to start a Creative Writer’s Group at MC. His influence, says Adam, “shaped me in more ways than I could ever accurately convey.” Perhaps this influence helped develop Adam’s own ethic of care, seen daily in his committed work at Mass General Hospital. Adam feels he is right where he wants to be now, but it took him a while to get there! Following his earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from

Salem State University, he held a variety of positions across different industries. An initial relationship with Mass. General as an administrative coordinator in the operating room (2008-2012) led to a foray into other jobs, and just a year ago, Adam returned to MGH as Medial Intensive Care Unit Coordinator. He loves it! In his role, Adam is the primary person to interact and coordinate with the visitors and families of patients. “The thing about the MICU,” says Adam, “is that we get the most critical of the patients at MGH. When our visitors come to the door, they are – most often – having a terrible day, one of the worst, even. I like to think I bring a unique perspective to my role, as I have been that family member trying to sleep amidst terrifying uncertainty out in our waiting room. I use that experience, as well as my background in Psychology, to identify and connect with our visitors in a more meaningful way.” The pandemic, of course, has exacerbated an already stress-filled environment. Adam reports that, “It’s been quite some time since we have admitted a patient with any of our “usual diagnoses” unencumbered by 21

the COVID-19 virus. At this time, all of our 18 beds are occupied by patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are critically ill. Several other units have been converted into ICUs specifically for our COVID-19 patients as well. One major change is that nurses from the “regular” medical units are being cross-trained to be ICU nurses.” MICU is largely responsible for all the crosstraining, so there’s never a dull moment! Despite these challenges and regular exhaustion, Adam is heartened both by knowing that he and colleagues make a positive difference in people’s lives and by seeing a tremendous communal outpouring of support and encouragement. Though the external community are not allowed in MGH buildings right now, “the walls are plastered with poster boards, signs and cards filled with love, gratitude and words of encouragement. There are hand-painted stones lining the entrance with supportive messages on them. It’s really been amazing to witness, and such a privilege to be a part of it all!” Adam is pleased that he and his team are providing patients with the greatest quality of care, while offering ample support to families of patients who are not allowed to be there with loved ones. On top of it all, Adam is enjoying the amazing learning experience of being at a top-tier teaching hospital, surrounded by some of the most brilliant minds in the field of medicine and by colleagues with loving hearts – like his!

DR . MAT T RONAN, MC’01 Lead Hospitalist, VA Boston HealthcareSystem & Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School When Matt Ronan graduated from Malden Catholic in 2001, he could certainly be proud of distinguished academic performance (Theology Department Award winner) and extracurricular involvements (Captain of Football and Baseball, XBSS Student Retreat, MCLI), and today he reflects fondly on the community experience 22

– friendships and relationships. Successes at The College of the Holy Cross (2005) and Georgetown University School of Medicine (2010), led to his Internal Medicine Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, completed in 2013. His role today blends direct patient care, education of medical students and residents, with quality improvement and patient safety responsibilities that allow him to bridge the needs of the frontlines with the goals of the medical center. In describing how things have changed since March 2020, Matt explains, “Care and coordination have heightened tremendously, "with indescribable effort to meet the needs of patients and employees while trying to predict the volume and severity of patients in need of care. While working to anticipate pandemic-related needs, staff had to increase efforts in maintaining operations of the hospital, dramatically changing how care would be delivered." “From increasing our ability to provide telehealth visits,” says Matt, “to planning individual patient movements through the hospital to mitigate risk to all involved, we had to physically modify areas of the hospital and adopt new technologies to meet demands in creative ways. It has forced us outside of what has been a comfortable routine. Fortunately, we have incredibly smart, hard-working, and dedicated staff that are up to the challenge.” Matt’s “take” on the unique novelty of this infection is fascinating. He tells us: We are so used to practicing medicine with an evidence base that just doesn’t exist with this illness. Through incredible information sharing across the world, we are learning more every day about presentation, carriage, transmission, disease course and treatment. The healthcare industry on the whole is being aggressive in developing and trialing treatments. We simply do not have enough information to know if

they are helpful. We are as reliant on our clinical judgment as ever. Staff on the frontlines must be diligent in their processes. It is exhausting physically and mentally as individuals rise to the challenge of performing above the usual responsibilities of their job. Infection prevention strategies are performed meticulously, but as we see more and more healthcare workers affected across the country, it causes worry about the implications for ourselves and at home. All the while, the response and dedication to caring for all patients in this crisis has been overwhelming.

"Walls are plastered with poster boards, signs and cards filled with love, gratitude and words of encouragement."

Beyond the purely medical challenges, the personal challenges are daunting, too. “What is most disconcerting,” says Matt, “is the isolation that this has forced on everyone. Patients, ill and often facing life threatening conditions, are left without the comfort of family or friends at their bedside. Very few exceptions exist for visitation. While technology can provide some relief, patients are generally facing this alone.” For both patients and practitioners the moral distress is real: “Every time a person is suspected of being infected with Coronavirus, the implications are wide-ranging for the individual and their community" Matt recognizes the far-ranging evidences of kindness and support from the community, and he himself manages to stay grounded as he balances his personal experiences and emotions with the duty and responsibilities that accompany his role. He suggests that each of us can help maintain the sense of community that is so desperately needed, particularly by thinking of how patients could benefit from charity, for instance, through “letters, messages, collaborating with local charities and field hospitals 23

to see if they have needs that could be contributed to. Finally,” he urges, “continue to take this seriously and follow the guidance of social distancing and responsible action while we continue to bend the curve.” Had Matt not received a Theology Award at his MC Commencement, he would certainly be earning his place in heaven through his dedication today!

E LLE N (BORTONE) MCPHAIL , GC’88 Pharmacist If you think it’s easy being a working mom – 3 days a week out of the house, trying to be a “teacher” to 3 kids (ages 15, 13, and 11) all on their various hybrid learning schedules, plus trying to keep the sink emptied of dishes and cups - you’re wrong! But Ellen McPhail, Girls Catholic Class of 1988, does it with smile, bringing a steady, cheerful, calming presence to the local community she serves so well. A resident of Wakefield, currently a Pharmacist at Green Street Pharmacy in Melrose, Ellen is grateful for her Girls Catholic roots and happy to be of service. “I feel lucky and blessed,” she says, “to be able to have an impact on my community in a positive way. I fully believe that my time at Girls Catholic gave me my foundation to be a caring and compassionate pharmacist. The curriculum at Girls Catholic was both rigorous and fun; we focused on our Catholic faith, serving God, our school and our community, but above all we were taught to be respectful of others.” Ellen’s college career began at Salem State University, where she focused for two years on general Biology before transferring to Northeastern University to join a five-year program leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy. During her time at Northeastern, Ellen, who lived in Medford, was working at the local Osco Pharmacy, where she received a job offer upon graduation and worked there for almost 15 years. “I loved working there and growing up in the same 24

town,” she tells us. “I was able to have a real connection with my customers. I started there as a staff Pharmacist and eventually was promoted to Pharmacy Manager. I left my position there because at that time, I was pregnant with my third child. I realized that working full time, especially in retail where you work 12-hour days, nights, weekends and holidays, was just too much for me to keep up. I wanted to have a more flexible schedule and time to spend with my family.” Happily, Ellen found just that at the Green Street Pharmacy, where she has worked for 11 years. She notes how it isn’t easy for a small independent pharmacy to compete with the regional chains. Green Street goes back generations. The owner still works there every day, and the business has managed to develop a great niche in the community. It specializes in servicing state-run group homes throughout the area. “These homes have anywhere from 1-10 residents living there full time,” says Ellen, “and we are responsible for packaging, managing and delivering all of their medication. We also offer medication management for the elderly and home bound and offer free local daily delivery. “Since pharmacies are considered to be ‘essential’,” Ellen explains, “my schedule at work has not changed, but many things about work are different since COVID19. Our delivery service has really been popular with the community; we have received many new customers since the pandemic started, and people are more likely to want to stay at home. We receive many phone calls every day from people looking for popular items like masks, gloves, alcohol, hand sanitizer and thermometers,” all of which at one time were unavailable. It was very difficult to have to tell people that important items were not in stock. Nursing homes and Group homes, the two primary places Green Street services, were hit the hardest, and extra precautions at work are called for to make sure everything is sanitary and safe for everyone involved, workers and customers.

Ellen’s role has taken almost a pastoral turn. “People are scared!” she tells us. “We receive many phone calls a day from our customers that are afraid of many aspects of this disease and how it may affect them. Much of our time is spent just talking with people, giving them advice, being a calming voice or just a friendly person to chat with when they may be alone during this very scary time. We also deal with many people who have mental illness and for them, this creates much anxiety, and anything we can do to help with that, we try to do. Often, I just tell people to turn off the news. Many people are home alone all day, and watching the news becomes overwhelming for them. People need to take a break, read a book, meditate, enjoy a hobby or just chat with someone.

Ellen has kept her Girls Catholic/Malden Catholic ties strong. She had been to many meetings at MC about the development of the Girls Division and enjoyed a “hard-hat” tour of the facility just before it was ready to open three years ago. She is pleased that, “The Class of ’88 is going strong. Thanks to the power of social media, we have reconnected with many of our classmates and have our own FB page… We have an amazing group of girls!” This year many will be celebrating 50th birthdays, and festivities are in store. “I never thought that my time at Girls Catholic would shape my life as much as it has,” says Ellen, “but I'm certainly glad it did.” We and all those touched by Ellen’s care are ever-so-glad, too!

Malden Catholic Day of Golf SEP TEMBER 25, 2020 B L AC K S WA N C O U N T R Y C L U B

COVID-19 public gathering restrictions may have limited the size and nature of Malden Catholic’s annual golf outing, but nothing could mask the Lancer pride and enthusiasm demonstrated by the 100 golfers who took time to golf for a great cause on a beautiful September day. Instead of a shotgun start, 20 teams maintained social distancing with scheduled tee-times. Everyone also enjoyed a hearty boxed lunch after playing 18 holes. Players competed for best-of-tournament, with Dr. Bruce Doyle’s team coming in first with -16 under par; second place went to Justin Sencabaugh’s group with -13 under par on a scorecard playoff! 27

Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends of Malden Catholic: Greetings from Cape Cod. It seems strange to be writing from here this time of year, but these are not ordinary times, as we all know. Bev and I have been hibernating here since early March in order to mitigate risk from the pandemic. There is so much we miss, as I am certain is the case with all of you. One thing I dearly miss is comingling with the faculty, staff and students at Malden Catholic. As we approach our season of Christmas, I want to share with you how much we have to be thankful for at Malden Catholic. At no time over the past 20 years have I been prouder of the incredible efforts of the MC administration, faculty, staff and entire community as they stepped up with enormous courage and tackled this virus head-on. This is one of those very infrequent occasions in one's lifetime where there is no place to hide and where the true colors of a family are evident to all. The Blue and Gold are FRONT and CENTER. Let me assure you, top to bottom, this is the finest and most dedicated leadership team we have had at MC during the past two decades. Under John Thornburg's steady hand at the helm, we are thriving under the most adverse of circumstances. Many of those in senior positions are products of an MC education and understand the importance of preserving the mission. We are blessed that in his 35th year of service, Brother Puccio remains the spiritual lynchpin to the Xaverian charism. At a time when

hundreds of Catholic secondary schools across the country have serious reservations about their future, we at Malden Catholic remain steadfast to our mission and have never been more confident of our destiny. True to form, we are currently deeply engaged in updating our Strategic Plan. These are exciting times as we look to the future and strive to identify opportunities for Malden Catholic to make even more of a difference in the lives of young men and women residing north of Boston. The demographics may have changed, but the need has not. We could not dream these dreams without being fully confident of your support. Thank you, parents, faculty and staff, Trustees, Malden Catholic alumni, Girls Catholic alumnae, Foundations and friends for your continued generosity. There is a Latin proverb that says, “If the wind will not serve, take to the oars." I ask you to row with us as we forge the future of Malden Catholic, irrespective of the current headwinds. In the very near future we will be sharing our hopes for MC's future and are confident you will find a way to be supportive. Sincerely, Jim Donovan Hon 2011

Tribute to Hon. Gerard F. Doherty, Esq., 1946 A LASTING IMPACT, AN ENDURING LEGACY G E R A R D F. D O H E R T Y, E S Q 194 6 A P R I L 6 , 19 2 8 – J U N E 16 , 2 0 2 0

The Honorable Gerard F. Doherty of Charlestown passed away on June 16, 2020, at the age of 92 in the home where he was born on Washington Street. Gerard’s lifelong devotion to Malden Catholic singlehandedly provided for many others the opportunities that were afforded him when he was a student in the 40’s at the school, then located on Highland Ave. in Malden. With a “Plus Ultra” spirit of generosity and dedication, Gerard lifted generations of young men, vaulting them from the working class into the halls of prestigious colleges and universities and then on to the professional industries of law, medicine, higher education and government, to name a few, assuring them passage to the American Dream. A direct witness and participant in many of the world’s most critical events of the 20th century, Gerard, nonetheless, displayed unwavering commitment to his high

school roots and to the MC mission. His commitment underscored the philosophy that students need support in the form of teachers, mentors and guides who inspire them toward personal excellence that translates into being socially responsible and always looking after those who follow. After graduating from Malden Catholic in 1946, Gerard continued his education as a Harvard undergraduate. He then matriculated at Wayne State University, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health Administration and then at Suffolk University Law School. Known for his many professional accomplishments as a lawyer, real estate developer, member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Chairman of the State Democratic Party and as a political campaign manager, touching the lives of presidents, Gerard always remembered his Malden Catholic roots. 37

To those who knew him best, he is remembered for his many unpublicized acts of kindness and generosity, both financial and personal, to friends and strangers. While Gerard’s monetary gifts secured scores of scholarships for students from Charlestown and local urban communities, his philanthropy also enhanced the overall school facility in order that students might be afforded the best education, and he strongly supported Malden Catholic’s community outreach and admissions efforts. However, the most tangible, everlasting gift that Gerard provided to our students was the instilling of a strong sense of self and the values of loyalty and friendship. He believed that through achieving excellence in academics, athletics, and service, students would have the foundation, honed through hard-work, determination, persistence and diligence, to become moral leaders who would act to improve our world. Gerard demonstrated his belief in the power and promise of a Malden Catholic education in his personal engagement with the school at all levels. A distinguished Trustee and advisor to headmasters for over 20 years, Gerard stood tall as a member of the Executive Committee of the Essential Malden Catholic Campaign; served on various Board committees; was a mentor who sponsored many programs for Malden Catholic’s Saint Francis Xavier Scholars at the Kennedy Library, where he served as a founding Trustee; and was a loyal friend and benefactor of the Xaverian Brothers. Gerard was not without loving helpmates along his life journey, two women who shared his dreams, supported him in his challenges, and joined him in his philanthropy. His marriages to Marilyn Dillon Doherty, gone to her rest in December 2016, and to retired Superior Court Judge Regina Quinlan Doherty, brought Gerard personal joy, companionship, and love. Together, Marilyn, Regina, and Gerard made it their lifework, their ministry, to bring good, to exert positive influence through the resources God had given them. 38

As a beneficiary of Gerard’s kindness, generosity, leadership, dedication, commitment and loyalty, Malden Catholic is forever indebted to Gerard. Through his life and vision for our students and families, he provided so many with unparalleled opportunities and experiences at Malden Catholic. His impact has been great; his legacy long-lasting. His kindnesses and example have been foundational to the successes of our students – as scholars, as good moral women and gentlemen, as accomplished professionals, and as contributing community members who remain loyal and always ready to give back to raise those who follow. In reminding us through his care and loyalty that friendship is the highest form of love, Gerard blessed us in countless ways. May he now enjoy God’s friendship and all-abiding love.

Mason S. Tenaglia 1974 Honored with 2020 “Plus Ultra” Award FIRST ALUMNUS FROM THE DECADE OF THE 70’S TO ACHIEVE $1 MILLION IN LIFETIME GIVING

Mason’s story is truly an MC classic. Growing up in Everett and son of Italian immigrants, Mason was a highly accomplished student, who really hit his stride as a member of the school’s debate team. He, along with fellow classmates John Prior, Jr. 1974, Tony Della Piana 1974 and Jim Veitch 1974 formed a very formidable team, winning in the Catholic Conference and traveling up and down the East Coast securing many victories. Upon graduation, Mason earned a degree from the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, followed by an MBA from the University of Chicago. Mason credits his MC experience - and particularly the discipline learned in debate - as having the greatest impact on the trajectory that took him from Everett to beginning his career at McKinsey and Company in 1981. “Had it not been for Brother Robertus Duffy C.F.X. and his investment in the debate program, I don’t think that I would 42

have been given these opportunities,“ says Mason. Mason initially worked as a consultant for two internationally renowned consulting firms, traveling the globe and gaining the experience that proved to be highly beneficial to him and the health care industry. He successfully launched two health care startups, managing both to fruition and successfully selling each. Currently, Mason serves as Vice President of IQVIA, a global provider of analytics, technology solutions and contract research services to healthcare and pharmaceutical companies. Despite tremendous professional success, Mason is most proud of his family. He has been married to his wife Laurie for the past 38 years. Together, they raised two children, their daughter Belle, a graduate of Cornell University, and their son Max, who recently received a Ph.D. in marine biology from the University of Miami. MC Board Chair, Mr. Jim Donovan explains, “Philanthropy is a very, very important part

of Mason’s life. He truly believes in giving back and has supported Malden Catholic in many ways. Many years ago, he established an annual scholarship in memory of his mother Florence C. Mastrocola Tenaglia, and that scholarship has benefitted so many young men coming out of the City of Everett who wanted to attend Malden Catholic. Mason has made this possible.” Unwavering in his commitment to MC, Mason has personally sponsored hundreds of students with the opportunity to take the Kaplan SAT test preparation courses. The contributions that Mason has made to the Fund for Malden Catholic and the recently completed, highly successful Essential Malden Catholic Campaign have been tremendous. Mason has devoted significant time and talent by serving as a trustee over two different terms. He initially served a nine-year term beginning in 2002, during which he chaired the Finance Committee, and recently Mason was invited back on the Board and currently is serving a second term and is chair of the Finance Committee. Malden Catholic is grateful to Mason for being the first member of any graduating class from the decade of the 70’s to exceed $1 million dollars in lifetime giving in support of Malden Catholic

students and families. Mason has always said, “I have always felt that if I am going to give money to an educational institution, the one that needs it the most and can make the most of it is Malden Catholic. I encourage MC Alumni, if you look back as I have, the place that has made the most difference was the four years at Malden Catholic” Malden Catholic is truly a better place because of Mason Tenaglia 1974. As the beneficiary of Mason’s time, talent, expertise, and philanthropy, Malden Catholic thanks Mason for so generously sharing his profound spirit of “Plus Ultra” with our students and families.

IN HER OWN WORDS

Rosemary Boland Phalen GCHS 1969 Provides $350,000 Gift to Establish Permanent Family Scholarship As a member of the Board of Trustees, I am honored to be part of the MC family! My family has a long history with Girls Catholic High School. My dad’s sister, Rose Marie Boland, graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1929. She joined the order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph as Sister Mary Carl and became the principal of the Boston School for the Deaf. She was my role model! The youngest of four girls in my family, all who attended Girls Catholic, I am forever grateful for the education that I received as a student during the mid-to-late sixties. So that when MC’s Girls Division was initiated, I knew that I had to be involved. I grew up in the Morrison Park area of Medford. Many of my girlhood friends were close neighbors through twelve years of school at Immaculate Conception Grammar School and Girls Catholic High School. As “forever friends” (Barbara Costello, Liz Hardy, Maureen Gordon, and Kathy McCarthy) we continue to get together frequently to remember our deceased childhood friends Marilyn Fardy and Laureen Argy. As we say, “we don’t get old, the stories do’’! The Girls Catholic experience bonded us for life. We worked hard and saw the nuns as demanding teachers who held us to high standards. I was a cheerleader and wrote for the Ricardian (school newspaper). Favorite activities were those that we shared with the MC boys… all sporting events, dances in Columbus Hall, pre-game bonfires 44

at Brother Gilbert Stadium and proms. During sophomore year, I became a volunteer at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford and decided a career in nursing would be my goal. I received my diploma from the Mount Auburn School of Nursing in Cambridge and started my professional career there working in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. I quickly realized that I needed a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing to advance. I married my husband Jim and headed to the Boston College School of Nursing. Three weeks before graduation, we welcomed our first child! After graduation, I entered the field of Maternal Child Health. This included care of pregnant moms in medical offices, hospitals and community settings. At age 46, I returned to the University of Massachusetts to attain a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a focus on the area of Perinatal Loss. I developed curricula for healthcare professionals regarding issues of miscarriage and fetal loss as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA. This program continues today! Presently, I am a member of the Board of Trustees Quality and Patient Safety Committee at the Boston Medical Center in Boston. Jim and I have been married for 46 years. We have three adult children and six grandchildren, who all live in our town and bring us joy every day!

ROSE M A R I E BO L A N D 1929

Throughout our lives we have received many blessings! I am reminded by the words of Saint Francis, “You are what you are seeking.” We have worked hard and have been successful. We believe that it is very important to “give back” to the community that is foundational to so much of our success today. For this reason, we have created the Boland Family Scholarship Fund, a permanent fund, and support the St. Francis Xavier Leadership Giving Society to ensure that motivated and hard-working students of modest means will receive an MC education. We hope to encourage others to join us as we support the efforts of the administration and staff at Malden Catholic to provide a quality Catholic education for all students for years to come!

Paul Fitzgerald 1981 Expresses Gratitude for MC Experience as Trustee and Member of the Saint Francis Xavier Society Paul Fitzgerald '81 was raised in Peabody and attended Our Lady of the Assumption School in Lynnfield. Upon his graduation, his family moved to Melrose and Paul joined his cousin Michael McLaughlin '76 as a student at Malden Catholic. Paul was later followed at MC by his cousins John Fitzgerald ’82, John Cronin ’99, Michael Fitzgerald ’06 and Daniel Fitzgerald ’12. While at MC, Paul was on the Debate Team, wrote for the Crystal 99, served on the Student Council and was an Associate Editor of the Lancer. Paul was also in the Drama Club, performed in the school shows and participated in the Close-Up Program. He played intramural sports and fondly remembers his team winning the intramural basketball championship his senior year. “I experienced a real personal and academic awakening at Malden Catholic. The Brothers and lay teachers inspired all students to develop and use our talents to the fullest. They also inspired us to become lifetime learners, who should use our talents and learning to enrich the lives of others.” Paul particularly credits Brother Joseph Britt C.F.X. for fostering his interest in history and government, Brother Dan Skala C.F.X.for teaching him to think and write critically and the late Brother Kevin Kenny C.F.X.for his spiritual mentorship. Following his undergraduate and graduate work at Boston College and Georgetown University, Paul worked for a number of years in the public sector, including serving as the Assistant for Public Information and 46

Intergovernmental Relations for the Suffolk County District Attorney, a legislative staffer with the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Executive Director of Common Cause Massachusetts and Chief of Hearings for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Paul also served two terms on the Melrose Board of Aldermen. While working, Paul attended Suffolk University Law School and received his JD (magna cum laude) in 1999. Following his graduation from law school, Paul worked as a Staff Counsel for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and then spent a number of years in private practice where he specialized in municipal, administrative, labor and employment law. In 2013, Governor Deval Patrick appointed Paul to serve as Chair of the Massachusetts Board of Review, an appellate administrative law tribunal. He is also proud to have recently become a Trustee of Malden Catholic. Since 1995, Paul and wife Barbara have lived in Westwood, where he serves as Assistant Town Moderator and Chair of the Library Board of Trustees. Barbara recently retired as Chief Legal Officer at Hasbro, Inc., and currently serves as the first female chair of the Catholic Memorial Board of Directors. They have two children, Timothy (23) who recently graduated from Holy Cross and is working with City Year, and Erin (20) a junior at Boston College. Paul has maintained a lifelong friendship with his MC classmate Brian Rice, who was Paul's best man and is the godfather of his son Tim.

“Those of us who received the gift of a Malden Catholic education truly have an obligation to make it possible for other young men and women to receive the same gift. Contributing to MC as a member of the Saint Francis Xavier Society is both a meaningful way to say thank you to the Brothers, teachers and staff who made a positive impact on my life and a way to make a positive impact on the lives of other young men and women.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Joshua Ouellette 2014 Saint Francis Xavier Society Member

CHALLE NGING TIME S I come from a relatively poor family. There was a time in my life when my parents held two jobs each to support me and my brother. Times got tougher when they both became disabled. At one point in my life, our family was homeless. In our materialistic world, it can be hard not to have the luxuries others may have. It is more trying, however, to lack ordinary household basics and the tools necessary for academic success. While these are the challenges and obstacles that I faced, they became the impetus that encouraged me to work harder.

THE VALUE OF AN E DUC ATION The importance of doing well in school was instilled in me from a very young age by my family. My grandfather, who was MC Class of 1947, always told me that an education was a means to success and upward mobility. Not only did they want me to do my best, but they wanted the best education for me. Financial assistance made it possible for me to attend Malden Catholic as a member of the Class of 2014. After graduating from MC, I became the first in my family to go to college, attending Boston College with a full 50

scholarship and earning a BS in Finance and a BA in Philosophy. A summer internship with Goldman Sachs led to a full-time position in their New York division after graduation. I have been with the company ever since; I am currently an equity sales trader with the Boston office.

LIFE LE SSONS My MC experience was extremely formative and life defining. At MC I was always judged by the value of my convictions, strength of my work ethic and content of my character, which as I learned came from the Xaverian traditions of Simplicity, Humility, Compassion, Trust and Zeal. If nothing else, I left MC with a fundamental understanding of what it means to be a decent human being in society, which I continue to apply today. By the end of my MC journey, I grew into a new version of myself that I never thought could exist. It was not an easy time of my life by any measure; however, I never gave up regardless of the obstacles and had the support of an entire community of great teachers who only wanted me to succeed.

RE FLEC TIONS OF GR ATITUDE Each day I take time to reflect on where I have been, where I am, and where I want to go. In doing so, I always remember the generosity of the alumni and friends of Malden Catholic who so generously gave so that I could benefit from a Malden Catholic education. This fills me with gratitude and inspires me to pay it forward. My reflections also remind me of the importance of living in accordance with the principles and values I developed at MC: not forgetting your roots, not forgetting those who were there for you when you really needed help and not forgetting who believed in you when nobody else did. For me, this is Malden Catholic. When I was down, Malden Catholic lifted me and taught to go out into the world believing in myself and knowing that I could do better and succeed in life. I am honored, now, to support the community that took me in and made me a part of their family. I will always try to give back to MC in any way that I can, because it is the right thing for me to do. I am proud to be a member of the

Saint Francis Xavier Society, providing today’s students the same opportunity that I had to benefit and grow from the MC experience. I hope that they, too, will always believe in their potential and become the best that they can be.

Board Designated Funds Creating a Board Designated Fund ensures that generations of students at Malden Catholic will have the financial aid that they need. With an initial gift of $25,000, an individual, group or a family may establish a scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Designated funds are invested and pay out an established percentage of income annually in financial aid; the size of the corpus may be increased at any time. Malden Catholic is grateful for those who have created and continue to support these funds, ensuring a Malden Catholic education for Lancers today and for future generations. Contributions made in FY 20 are referenced under each fund’s name.

Bransfield/Sullivan/Picardo Memorial Scholarship ESTABLISHED BY MRS. KATIE SULLIVAN WAUNCH GCHS ’66 AND MR. STEVEN PICARDO ’67 WITH $30,000 GIFT MALDEN CATHOLIC GIRLS DIVISION The Bransfield/Sullivan/Picardo Memorial Scholarship for Malden Catholic High School – Girls Division honors the legacy of this mother and daughter… two generations of GCHS women who endured personal hardship and physical pain but always drew on the foundation, education and strength they received at GCHS from the School Sisters of Notre Dame, where they learned never to give in to tragedy or adversity. They found solace in their faith, family and lifelong friendships formed with the Girls Catholic High School family from 1936 to 1967 to this day. This scholarship honors and celebrates their lives through Malden Catholic High School – Girls Division.

K ATHLE E N (BR ANSFIE LD) SULLIVAN GCHS 1936 Kathleen (Bransfield) Sullivan was born in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1917 to Irish immigrant parents. Her mother was widowed when Kathleen was six years old, and at a very young age Kathleen learned the value of hard work. She attended the Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Malden and proudly graduated from Girls Catholic High School on Charles Street in 1936. As the nation was recovering from the Great Depression, based on excellent school grades, Kathleen was fortunate to gain employment with the City of Medford. During the next eight years, through World War II, and while caring for her aging mother, Kathleen advanced to Assistant to 70

the Medford City Clerk. In 1945 Kathleen Bransfield married Medford attorney Roger Sullivan, and together Kathleen and Roger became the parents of three children. Sadly, in 1961, Attorney Sullivan passed away. As a single mother and rooted in her faith, Kathleen believed in the value of Catholic education. Her three children attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Malden and graduated consecutively from Malden Catholic High School and Girls Catholic High School; Roger Sullivan, Jr., (MC ’65), Kathleen “Katie” Sullivan (GCHS ’66) and Patricia “Patty” Sullivan (GCHS ’67). After their graduations, Kathleen returned to work as Clerk of the Civil Division of the First District Court of Eastern Middlesex until she retired.

PATRICIA (SULLIVAN) PIC ARDO GCHS 1967 Kathleen’s youngest daughter Patty (GCHS ’67) loved GCHS and participated in many extracurricular activities including Choir, Glee Club and Journalism and enjoyed her position as Photography Editor for the GCHS newspaper, The Ricardian, capturing people and places through photographs and in giving life and interest to written articles. During her years at GCHS, Patty met Steven Picardo (MC ’67). They dated through their senior year and after high school graduation. After completing business school, Patty was employed as Assistant to the Director of the U. S. Department

of Commerce in Boston. Patty and Steve were married in 1973. Shortly thereafter, a speeding teenager struck and severely injured Patty while she was crossing a street in Medford. Spending weeks in traction in the hospital and months of recovery at home learning to walk again, and with relentless determination, Patty eventually gave birth to two daughters, Stephanie and Amanda. Patty’s daughters attended St. Mary of the Annunciation School in Melrose where Patty actively volunteered. One afterschool activity included ballet lessons at the Jose Mateo Ballet Theater Company in Boston. Patty considered making costumes for the Jose Mateo Ballet Theater to be one of her greatest accomplishments. She told stories of sitting around on the theater floor making “tutus” and other incredibly beautiful costumes for the holiday production of "The Nutcracker." Kathleen was extremely talented in artistic endeavors from gourmet cooking to needlepoint and cross stich. We always remember Patty’s famous question, “Can you imagine me sewing?” On August 2, 1995, while on their way to a picnic, tragedy struck again for the Sullivan family. On Route 93, just over the Massachusetts border into New Hampshire, a ten-wheel container truck rammed their automobile from behind, killing four of its occupants: grandmother Kathleen (Bransfield) Sullivan (GCHS ’36); her daughter Patricia (Sullivan) Picardo (GCHS ’67); Patricia’s 12-year old daughter Amanda Picardo; and 11- year old grandson Colin Waunch, who was visiting from California.

She told stories of sitting around on the theater floor making “tutus” and other incredibly beautiful costumes for the holiday production of The Nutcracker.

Malden Catholic is grateful for the generous support of Mrs. Katie Sullivan Waunch GCHS '66 and Mr. Steven Picardo '67. Their generous contribution will carry the legacies Kathleen and Patricia forward and make a difference in the lives of our students not only for today, but for years to come.

The Theodore James Ryken Society In 2004, Malden Catholic inaugurated the Theodore James Ryken Society to recognize those who have provided for future generations of Malden Catholic students by making gifts through bequests, life income arrangements and other planned gifts. When you join the Theodore James Ryken Society you demonstrate your commitment to the students who attend Malden Catholic. Your planned gift is an inspiration to future generations and a reminder of the philanthropy that sustains Malden Catholic. By giving back through a bequest or a planned gift, Ryken Society members make the ultimate commitment that truly transcends through time. Members of the Theodore James Ryken Society have indicated in writing that they have made special provisions for Malden Catholic in their estate plans. In addition to being a meaningful gift to Malden Catholic, Planned Giving helps to reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains and federal estate taxes for the donor. Please check with your financial advisor or accountant for more details on arranging for a planned gift, and the personal benefits associated with that charitable gift.

72

Her Legacy, Their Future THROUGH A BEQUEST, JOAN MARIE MCDONOUGH GCHS 1947, PROVIDES $175,000 ESTATE GIFT ESTABLISHING PERMANENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND In 1943, Joan Marie McDonough entered Girls Catholic High School on Charles Street in Malden, MA. A motivated and talented student, Joan benefitted greatly from the course of study offered by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. During her time at Girls Catholic, Joan developed deep friendships that would remain well over 70 years and continued to develop new friendships in all corners where life would lead. Good with numbers and eager to utilize her many skills and wonderful personality, Joan began working for the Pilgrim Trust Company in Boston before her 1947 high school graduation. For more than 50 years she remained with the bank, which eventually became New England Merchants Bank, employed as a head teller for many of those years. The constant over the course of her entire life was her strong belief in the power and the promise of a Catholic education as evidenced by her tremendous respect for her Girls Catholic experience and the solid foundation it provided for her future success and achievement. Joan’s life was one of faithfulness to her family, her schools and her Church. 74

Social by nature, Joan attended many Malden Catholic events, including the annual Memorial Mass held each November, as well as her class reunions and the annual Golden Plus reunion which brings together alumni/alumnae who have graduated more than 50 years ago. Joan would often go from table to table greeting classmates. With a sharp memory, Joan was able to recall events and happenings that took place well over 70 years ago with ease and clarity. Joan always had a kind word for everyone she met. Oftentimes she would be the last to leave an event along with her dear classmates and friends Lillian Czechowski 1947 and Alice Mulcahy 1947. Joan kept in close contact with the Malden Catholic Advancement office, frequently informing the staff of births, deaths and achievements of Girls Catholic and Malden Catholic community members. Joan enjoyed her work greatly as well as the City of Boston, and weekly took the train downtown. She enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Ireland and other countries. Joan was a generous supporter of area Catholic parishes and Catholic religious organizations and was deeply involved

with her family, caring for her late mother for many years and keeping in contact with her many first cousins, their families and other family members and friends. A true Bostonian, Joan was a dedicated Red Sox and Patriots fan and read the Boston Globe along with several other newspapers daily. In March of 2019, Malden Catholic was saddened to learn about the passing of Joan Marie McDonough GCHS 1947. A faithful and loyal alumna, Joan saw clearly the benefits of a Catholic education, remaining loyal, faithful and close to her family, school and church. In reviewing her belongings after her passing, her cousins noticed the tremendous amount of literature and correspondence from Malden Catholic High School which reflected Joan’s tremendous appreciation for her Girls Catholic experience and the recent decision of the Xaverian Brothers and the Malden Catholic High School Board of Trustees to open a Girls Division, in essence offering parallel educational experiences and remaining faithful to the long tradition of single gender classes in the MC community. In October of 2019, Joan Marie McDonough’s estate provided a bequest of $175,000 to create the Joan Marie McDonough 1947 Memorial Scholarship Fund to be allocated annually to four young women and two young men as scholarship assistance. In addition, Joan’s bequest specifically allocated 20% of the funds to the general use and purposes of the school. Through this bequest, Joan has helped to strengthen the position of Malden Catholic, honoring her Girls Catholic roots and providing optimal educational programs and opportunities for students today and future generations of students and families at Malden Catholic.

WHAT WILL YOUR LEGAC Y BE?

During her time at Girls Catholic, Joan developed friendships that would remain well over 70 years...
