t this time of year many schools prepare to perform at the annual Drama Fest. Malden High Schools Play Production attended the festival this year on Feb. 27, 2010 at Weston High School. Drama Fest is an event at
which different schools convene to perform 40 minute plays. The top three move on to the semi-finals to compete once again. Newton Country Day High School performed Cagebirds, Stoneham High School performed Back Story, Somerville continued on page 10

n the days following Feb. 27, 2010, typing “Chile earthquake” on the Google search engine caused the website to produce a list of recent earthquakes in and near the South American country. This list, which seems to grow by the hour, is testament to the destructive seismic activity that has been plaguing the Western hemisphere in the past weeks. On the afternoon of the 27th, at 3:34 P.M local time, a 90 second, 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of the Maule Region of Chile. The earthquake had devastating effects throughout six other regions in the country, which collectively house 80 percent of the population. Buildings and bridges collapsed, roads were destroyed, and electricity, water, and phone lines were cut. Concepción, Chile’s secondlargest metropolitan area located only 70 miles from the quake center, was severely affected by the quake: buildings were reduced to rubble and sectors of the University of Concepción caught fire. In the nearby port of Talcahuano, a wave flooded the main square. The earthquake triggered a chain of natural disasters around the globe. Hawaii, Tahiti, Japan, and New Zealand experienced floods and warned residents to relocate to higher ground. Chilean president Michele Bachelet estimated that two million people were affected by the earthquake, and although she does not have an exact number, the earthquake caused an estimated $30 billion in damages. Bachelet stated that the country will need three to four years to recover economically from the disaster, and that international aid is imperative. President Barack Obama stated Continued on page 5
