On April 2, 2012 the celebration of the cultures of MHS began in what is known as Multicultural week. For the first time, the school has dedicated a week to acknowledge, educate, and celebrate the students of the world. continued on page 17

n April 9, 2012, Jake England and Alvin Watts, two white males, were arrested for shooting and killing two black men and a black woman, and critically wounding two other black men, according to ABC News’ reporting from police in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Just weeks earlier, the shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin by a white male, George Zimmerman, in Florida took the media by storm. In a matter of two weeks, a video of the Trayvon Martin 911 call on YouTube was viewed over one million times, the topic of Trayvon Martin had trended Twitter, and countless Trayvon Martin remembrance pages were shared on Facebook. In a further attempt to draw attention to the killing, civil rights leaders, politicians, commentators, and family members created a “Wear a Hoodie Day” to show solidarity and express their anger and loss.

Martin was unarmed, wearing a hoodie, and had purchased Skittles, and Zimmerman was armed, followed Martin, believed that he was dangerous, and proceeded to shoot him.

The police detained Zimmerman, but let him go. The shooting did not result in a trial or conviction of Zimmerman for the death of Martin.

If Martin’s appearance, race, and dress was not the motive behind Zimmerman’s actions, what else could he have been thinking to cause him to react the way he did? The police’s non-action and Zimmerman’s dismissal caused many to wonder: What motivated the shooting? Was it Martin’s race? His hoodie? And why didn’t the police further the investigation? Zimmerman had yet to prove his true intentions behind the murdering of Martin. While it was not legally determined to be a hate crime, it is implied that this could have been so. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, what other conclusion can we come to?

When one mentions racism, what often comes to mind is a historical reference, such as

the Rosa Parks bus incident or Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream speech. What is important to understand about racism is that there are gradations of it. There is the racism of feeling uncomfortable around someone who is not the same race, there is the racism of thinking badly of someone simply because of the color of their skin, and then there is the racism of taking action in the form of violence against someone because of feelings of hatred of disgust toward him. While we don’t know what happened in the exact moment of both incidents, here’s what we do know: There was a racial prejudice in Watt’s and England’s shootings, as they went to an all black community and shot the individuals living there, and in the Martin case, Zimmerman suspected Martin to be dangerous because of his appearance. The prejudice in Zimmerman’s view of a black man in his neighborhood as a threat and one that needed to be taken out with force. The underlying institutional racism was also present, as the police did not do anything more than let Zimmerman go. How we could not think that Zimmerman’s actions were caused by hatred or fear of a black teenage male? If the situation was different, and the shooter was a black male, and the victim was a white, would the outcome be different? Would the killer be let go? Undoubtedly.

Maldonians often think of Malden as a racial utopia, but we need to see that racism and prejudice comes in many forms and is still present in our country. Although it is not seen everyday in Malden High or or community, it is still something that is being experienced in other parts of the country. We must acknowledge that racism is still very much of an issue today, and be unwilling to accept the institutionalized forms of it, whether it may be by police, court officials, or politicians, and the more common forms of it, as seen in the perceptions and actions of Americans.

Cyber-Bullying: Why It Is Wrong

P

eople are awfully rude to each other online. In my opinion, all people have their own way of being beautiful; they all just have a different way of expressing it.

The problem with today’s society is that we are too influenced by what other people tell us from behind a computer screen, and the sources of our insecurities always trace back to someone who is simply trying to make herself feel better.

I have noticed, and experienced, cyberbullying on Facebook.

Most of it consists of “versus” pages, where two girls’ pictures are put next to each other and their friends comment on who they think is prettier.

Sounds stupid, right? It is.

These pages cause nothing but drama, especially when two girls who hate each other are versed, and their friends begin commenting how ugly the other girl is. Believe me, that will not end well.

I just do not understand what the creators of these pages must be thinking. I just don’t understand how anyone could feel better after telling a girl, who is obviously insecure, that she is ugly.

“I may be ugly, but they sure love to stare.” - Lyrics by Cute Is What We Aim For In this day and age, there is so much in the media that can negatively influence society. So, why do we let it influence us?

The Massachusetts law on bullying addresses behaviors that “materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of the school.” I think that any sort of bullying, even something as simple as being called ugly, can disrupt one’s education. It is hard to stay focused when all you can think about is what other people are saying about you.

Honestly, I think that girls who hide behind a computer, bullying girls on Facebook, do not quite realize how hurtful they are being. It is one of the worst feelings in the world, when girls from your school are writing on your Facebook, telling you how ugly you are, or that you are weird, or that everyone hates you.

Nothing good can come out of online drama. I think that, instead of bullying each other, girls should celebrate their differences and learn to get along. I know it’s harder than it sounds, but there just is no need to cyberbully.

When a No Means Maybe: Recruiting at MHS Joel Stevenson Head Copy Editor

I

t is the American duty to be helpful in times of need, to drop what one is doing and jump into active duty with only one goal in mind: to preserve one’s motherland. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

However, one should not have to worry about being drafted nor pressured into serving one’s country, especially in school.

The thirty-minute lunch is the one period that everyone looks forward to. It is a break away from class, a time to do last minute homework, a time to relax with friends.

In between cafe A and B are tables stationed for advertisement.

There, one is able to find yearbooks for sale, tickets to local fundraisers, and the recruiting officers. Each group will ask you to participate in their activity; a simple no would suffice for most, but not the officers.

They will badger you until you either feel so pressured that you give your contact information, or you lie and say you have to go somewhere.

And at times that will not work. To them a “no,” is not a “no,” but rather “I am not sure right now, ask me about it tomorrow.”

On Oct. 12, 2011 Malden High School participated in Get Ahead Day, where students at MHS participated in different college activities.

Underclassmen went on field trips to colleges and took the PSATs, while seniors participated in the

college fair. During the fair, local colleges were stationed at tables and students were able to talk to colleges in hopes that they would find a few that they would like to apply to. The one station that was the least popular was the Army and Marines table, perhaps because students who walked too close were dragged down by questions upon questions, and then forced to give their name, address, and more.

During the summer of 2011, I was walking through Malden Square with friends when a recruiter stopped us and proceeded to ask what we wanted to be. When we told her, she mentioned how the Marines provided those occupations, despite us saying we were not interested. She ignored our statement, then asked another question; we answered and said we were still not interested. It came to a point where we were strongly asking her leave. She then pulled out a contact card and said she could not go back until she got our names and phone numbers, even if we had to lie. So that is what we did, we lied to get her to leave us alone.

As stated by senior Skye MacDonald, “I think it is wrong...they keep trying to convince us that the army or marines or whatever is right for us, and they try to make you sign up for something that you do not really want to do in the first place.”

n March 14, 2012, Thomas Lubanga, a Congolese warlord, was found guilty by the International Criminal Court for initiating the Union of Congolese Patriots campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo of abducting children and turning them into murderers.

He was convicted for the forced enlistment of children under the age of 15 and using them to participate in “hostilities” during a civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

rom music and fashion, to food and traditions, the Hispanic culture is an array of color and spice.

There are 20 some odd Spanish speaking countries in the world.

Some being: Spain, Venezuela, Honduras, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and the many others. All of these countries, though have their own special traditions and cultures that make them so wonderfully different.

The fashion world for example, is present in countries like Colombia and Spain. Colombian designer Amelia Toro brought her fashions to the table at Fashion Week in Colombia’s 22nd fashion week. She brought color and modern style, to the show, giving the Colombian fashion world a popular name. During the 10th Portland Fashion Week, in 2010, Toro designed a special line of new clothes dedicated to her Colombian culture.

This February, in the fashion capital, Madrid, Spain had it’s fashion week, presenting a plethora of unique innovative designs. Accord-

ing to China News Television Online, Francis Montesinos, a proud Spanish designer showed off his new Autumn/Winter collection at the show this year. An abundance of sweaters, scarves, and new shades of pastel were in his collection.

Along with fashion growing in beauty, Hispanic culture still holds true to its musical culture of Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Bachata, and a few others. The Salsa is of Cuban origin, where African drums and the Spanish guitar styles come together and form the famous music we know as Salsa. Cuba is also the origin of the Mambo and even the Tango. Music, was and still is a very important piece of Hispanic culture.

Today, we still see Hispanic cultures throughout America because of the increase of Latin Americans in our country. Increasing America’s culture as well. We see fashion, arts ,and music flourishing out of Spanish countries themselves and America adding a bit of salsa and spice to our world.

he accents, absolutely charming; the humor, witty; maybe the pronunciation is a bit off (only to American ears), though we can forgive the British for that, because we have more than enough to give thanks to them for. Let’s look at the scoreboard, the British can claim Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and a multitude of actors, producers, writers and directors who have colored American television and cinema screens for ages, while America can only call copyright to the idea of a democratic government and the Western genre of books and movies.

At the moment, American television stations are calling attention to less than hardworking and stand up American citizens such as the entire cast of Jersey Shore or teenage pop stars who lead double lives or perhaps the best of the best, Toddlers in Tiaras.

It can not be forgotten that American television has made major breakthroughs in the world of Television and entertainment production. Lucille Ball, of the iconic tv show I Love Lucy, had given producers and directors the idea of recording a scene on film rather than performing a live show to audiences via the television. Though with the current lack of any truly compelling or original shows airing on American television screens, it seems that maybe instead of mocking the British entertainment industry with recreations of some brilliant pieces of fiction, American audiences can stand up and applaud it.

No, sit down, the applause wasn’t supposed to be literal, you all have been listening to Dora the Explorer’s instructions for too long.

The applause means to do something else. Instead of tuning into mindless shows that are regurgitating plots that have been seen by American audiences for almost sixty years now, tune into something different. Something new. Something a bit more British.

Of course if you were in the United Kingdom you wouldn’t be watching reruns of some bratty rich girl’s sweet sixteen party, but watching actually intriguing and genu-

inely interesting shows.

So how does an American like yourself go about enjoying some of the best entertainment has to offer it? Well you have the internet my dear Watson!

Websites such as Hulu, Sidereel, XfinityTV and Netflix can stream episodes of some the most popular TV shows in the UK. Though there may be a small monthly cost for viewing, but it would be more than worth it to skip going to Dunkin Donuts for a few days to have a months worth of time to watch quality programming.

Suggested Shows:

Skins: A favorite among the teenage population of the UK, Skins is now going to be entering production of its final season though the six seasons that are now released for viewing are of top quality and realistic drama. Think of a better version of Degrassi (everyone’s favorite Canadian teenage drama.)

Sherlock: A reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novel series Sherlock Holmes. Set in 21st London, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Detective Holmes, Cumberbatch recently attended the Oscars for his performances in War Horse and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Being Human: Imagine a ghost, vampire and werewolf live together? While there is an American version being aired on the Syfy channel, the original version has a well developed plot and there is also a significant lack of sparkles, and much more intelligent humor.

Doctor Who: Reinstated in 2005, the classic British sci-fi show stars a “Mad Man with a Blue Box”. The show uses interesting and completely unique plot twists to keep viewers coming back for not just a seven season run, but rather since the early 1960s when the show was originally aired. Not only are there new modern episodes that have class A acts from top British actors of the era but there are also original episodes that were aired through out the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s.

othing but sparkles and shine, new collections of design; according to Forbes.com a three day event was assembled for fashion week in the Middle East.

Designers from all the surrounding countries gathered together to show off their new designs each one more glamorous than the last.

Beautiful greens, oranges, reds, purples, and heavenly shades of blue took over the runway. Designers from Afghanistan, Lebanon, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, all gathered to show off their new dresses.

These Middle Eastern designers have fantastically captured the audience with their detailed embroidery and incredibly intricate details.

Interestingly enough the show was not open for just anyone. Due to the clothing being presented the first two nights, men were banned from coming into the show. Only women were allowed. However, on the last evening married men allowed to attend this special Arabian event.

Even without the men there the show flourished with brilliant bright colors and new eccentric designs unfamiliar to those of which the designers had exposed before.

Designer Nawal Al Hooti brought culture and tradition, introducing her new modern collection of Omani inspired clothes, designer Amina Al Jassim’s line followed up with an abundance of color bring-

ing light to the runway. Business is booming for female designer Amina Al-Jassim whose clothing, while still reflecting the culture and beauty of the traditional Saudi Arabian clothing, remains beautiful in color, style, and incredible detail.

Her collection include Traditional, Classic, Trendy clothing along with wedding dresses along with a few others. She has an incredible amount of different styled traditionally inspired articles of creativity and color, suitable for any age or size. She captures well a stylish new Saudi Arabian influenced collection while continuing to stay true to her heritage with her traditional full covering head scarves and dresses.

This of course is not the only thing going on in the Middle East for fashion. While some Middle Eastern woman do dress in modesty with respectful head coverings they have had a chance to remain modest in dress and still reflect their own personal style.

As the fashion industry continues to grow in the Middle East new fashion trends become more popular, especially for women, where their clothing is so restricted in terms of different kinds of clothing. Some women though, have expanded in various colors lining their headscarves. This is keeping the respect and modesty there while allowing these women to be fashion-forward.

sia seems to be a continent made up of pandas, ninjas, and anime, though while American pop culture has created a stiff Asian stereotype, there is a much more diverse and exciting world hiding underneath. Appearing in the early 2000’s the emergence of K-Pop was capitalist South Korea’s response to the multitude of boy and girls bands that had appeared in the western music scene.

The most widely known K-Pop group, Girls Generation was created in 2007 and first came to prominence with their first single “Gee” which involved a mix of choreographed dance routines and adorable fash-

ion which reeled in their target age group. Like the American Pussycat Dolls, the group consists of a nine girls ensemble ranging in vocal style and sound.

One of the most impressive arrivals to the K-Pop scene is Wondergirls. The five female group not only has the cutesy teen pop look working for them, they also have an impressive vocal range. The group, formed in 2007, has taken and integrated Korean and American pop culture references into their music videos; several of their videos have clear connections to Beyoncé and other popular artists in the U.S.

May the Odds be Ever in Your Flavor

alloons, candy, selling stuffed animals around special holidays, and many other ideas are all ways that Malden High School students try to fundraise money for their group or sport. However; with all of these creative and successful ideas, MHS students got especially excited when the New England Coffee fundraiser was proposed.

Sponsored by the New England coffee company, conveniently located in Malden, students have the very interesting task of selling coffee to their family members, friends, and teachers. The fundraiser itself is basically a “trial run,” stated by sophomore class advisor, Jennifer Rogowicz. This “trial run” is a test to see if this fundraiser, or fundraisers similar to this particular one will happen on a yearly basis. Another factor why coffee was the main selling item was because the New England Coffee Company is located in Malden. Having this fundraiser allows the company to become more involved in the community and the public school system while contributing the amount of funds students

essentially raise for themselves.

By selling coffee, there are many incentives in which to motivate students to sell as much coffee as they can within the two week time period as the fundraiser ended on April 9th. Due to the fact that the New England Coffee Company contacted the school in proposing this fundraiser, half of the profits of the sales raised by the students goes to their respective class. This is definitely a motivator for those students in the senior class as of currently due to their finical situation and how prices for senior events such as prom and graduation are very expensive.

This particular situation for the senior class is what all grades essentially face in going through their four years of high school. Fundraising has become more of a challenge mainly because of the fact that so many different groups and clubs are doing so that coming up with new

and exciting ideas for fundraising is difficult. Along with the fact that half of the sales goes to each class, there are more incentives that motivates students such as the prize for the top seller in each grade receiving an Ipod for selling the most coffee.

Along with this, the class that raises the most money will not only receive half of the profits from their sales but they will also receive a greater money prize which will go towards future events.

To a greater extent, this school wide fundraiser will essentially have the effect of raising awareness of fundraising in general. The level of competition will naturally get more people involved, along with the many motivations from all of the incentives this fundraiser provides.

Along with this, more people will become aware of how significant fundraising is for their class for future events because “most students don’t see long term,” explained

Rogowicz.

Although these incentives are great as many people would try to win the Ipod, surprisingly it is not the main motivator. Sophomore Vanna Ren expressed that, “[she] is selling because [she] wants to help her class because [she] doesn’t want the price of graduation or even prom to be very high.” Along with this, Ren feels like having this grade to grade fundraiser will create a sense of friendly competition between the grades essentially, “bringing [the sophomore] class a little closer together.”

Fundraising will always be a struggle for high school students going through their four years in high school. However, most students have a lot of creative ideas and proposals to make the task of fundraising seem more fun, making more people want to get involved.

A Night Of Many Voices

Running For A Good Cause

aturday, March 31, 2012, was a night to remember at the Jenkins Auditorium in Malden High School. Old pals, friendly faces, and warm reunions awaited alumni who came trying to reminisce their high school years. Many of them came entirely because of successful comedy impressionist Joey “Voices” Noone, who casually connected with other alumni before and after his performance. “It feels great,” Noone explained after seeing his friends and former teachers. Thanks to Facebook, Voices was able to find and keep in touch with many of his past friends. To Voices, “it seems like yesterday” that he was spicing up the life of his classmates and teachers with his hyperactive and dynamic self. This show, he claimed, was the “best theater show” he ever performed. Accustomed to singing at dinner shows, he found the “acoustics itself is incredible” in the auditorium.

As stated by a close friend of Noone, Paul Schulte, MHS graduate of 1984, Voices concert was “far more than [he] ever expected.”

Traveling all the way down from New Hampshire to attend the event, he grew up with Noone in the same neighborhood and has known him for about 30 years. Noone, pulling off an amazing performance once again, felt comfortable enough with his excited, upbeat audience to jump down stage and get close with them, his charismatic character drawing them to sing along or clap to the rhythm. Energetic and alive, Noone impersonated many famous singers, including Elvis Presley, Michael MacDonald, and even Cher, of who he wore a white thong over his black pants and long, black curly wig to match. Not only did he sing however, but he cracked a many jokes throughout his show as well, captivating the audience with many references to his past and present self. In one case, he described the “bathroom guy,” who recognized and tried to shake his hands with the germ-a-phobic Noone, who was washing his hands at the time.

Wishing to keep away from germs for the sake of being healthy to perform for his beloved future audiences, Voices raised his elbow in reply. The elderly “bathroom guy” exploded his fist on Noone’s elbow in return, reminding Noone of a man who kept with the changing times. In addition to impressing singers and making jokes, he threw in a piece of self-made country music as well. Inspired by his exgirlfriend to create it, Noone’s “Do It All Again” received tremendous applause amongst the audience. His album is set to release soon, and this was the first time he sang his own music at one of his performances.

Overall, the event raised more than 8000 dollars.

Beneficial, this event serves another purpose besides connecting alumni and preserving tradition. Hosted by the MHS Alumni Association, the proceeds from Voices’ concert will aid MHS students in any way possible, such as “scholarships and financial help to buy warm clothes, new eyeglasses, [and] tickets to the senior prom,” explained vice-president of the MHSAA Diane Lind, MHS class graduate of 1954. This association was formed in 2007 by a group of alumni who had reunited under MHS’s 150th anniversary. Through the decisions of its Board of Directors, the association has also hosted other events, such as “Homecoming Lunch last October, where [they] sold raffle tickets and clothing like shirts and hoodies with [their] logo,” described Lind. Another fundraiser

that still continues is their “Name a Seat” fundraiser, in which for 100 dollars, a person, family, or business could purchase a brass plate with an engraved message of their choice on one of the Jenkins Auditorium seats. Currently, the association has sold more than 400 brass plates in this event. Much outreaching from Dave Haskell, MHS graduate of 1954 and officer of publicity and newsletter, and Lind contributed to the success of this concert. They have established a sub-committee of the MHSAA for the purpose of forming a program book consisting of ads from many businesses in the city, publicizing through media, and the methods to sell the tickets.

The association ranges from many graduates of MHS, from those 50 years ago to those recently, and encourage “all graduates to become members so [they] can do more to help,” stated Lind.

n March 24, 2012, runners from all over laced up their running shoes for the ninth annual Malden Rotary Race. This race is held every year around the third week of March to raise money for multiple charities. This year a portion of the money is going to help a water treatment plant in Ghana.

Even though the race was held in Malden, many volunteers and runners came from other neighboring cities. Many students from Malden High School helped out, but there were also students from Malden Catholic and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School.

Some MHS students who helped out in coordinating the event were President of the Interact club, junior Lisa DeLacey, and Treasurer and Blue and Gold member, senior Joel Stevenson. Their job was to round up volunteers and prepare them for the event, letting them know what to expect. DeLacey thought there was a great turnout and that it was a “nice community event.”

There were two races to choose to run or walk in, the five kilometer or the 10 kilometer race.

Some ran alone, while others had friends, spouses, or even dogs with them. One woman, Krystle Kelly, who works in Malden for an organization called “Housing Familes”, volunteered to walk in the five kilometer race with her family by her side. Another participant in the five kilometer event was none other than Malden mayor Gary Christenson. He decided to run in the five kilometer event in order to “show [his] support as mayor and as a resident [of Malden]”. Christenson believes that there could “never [be] enough of these events” since they are for a good cause and it brings the community together. One runner in the 10 kilometer race named Caleb Ping also ran because the proceeds go to “good causes”. He did not care what place he came in because it was a good opportunity to run.

Running his way to first place in the five kilometer race was Medford resident Michael Pulli with a time of 17:45, and for the 10 kilometer race it was Stowe, Vermont resident Charlie Schaeer who took home first place with a time of 33:27. No matter what place a runner came in they should be proud that they were part of a community event that was for a very good cause.

The Class of 2013 Presents the

The Malden O

nce a year, the Malden community joins together at Malden High School for the “oldest high school variety show in the country,” and what is known to us Maldonians as the annual Junior Varieties show. This year was the 72nd annual show, the tradition having begun in 1940.

What would happen if Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Youtube faced off? That was the question at MHS’s 72nd annual Junior Varieties. Social Networks play a big part in the lives of everyone, including high school students, so what better theme than “The Malden Network?” One of the three junior class advisors, Meaghann Galdos, explained that the votes for “Facebook and Twitter” were tied as the majority, so the class of 2013 decided to converge the two ideas into one.

The resulting plot was the “Malden Network,” in which the hosts of the show portrayed a different site and tried to convince a newcomer, Alex, acted by junior Jasmine Couthino, to join them. Junior Valentine Banor played Twitter, marching around with his “army of followers” who all carried shields embedded with the popular hashtags. Junior Blue and Gold staff member Catherine Poirier presented Facebook, who was accused of “always changing.” Junior Anita Caceda gave of all the excitement and sass of Youtube videos. Junior Prayush Pokharel portrayed the awkward, sensitive, yet lovable, role of Tumblr. To contribute to the social networking theme, friends or family members of the acts could send them a “tweet” or a “like” complete with a message and a flower of their choosing.

Junior Varieties remained loyal to the traditional singing and dancing, with a few new, attention grabbing additions. Memorable performances included the opening act, sophomore Cori Malone sang Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You” as well as “Nice Guys,” a youtube parody song, performed by senior Matthew Weldai, juniors Danielle Aguinaldo, Joshua Gaviola, Joseph Adelman, Keith Allen Farris, and sophomore Ramy Riviere, and “East Coast Brass” consisting of juniors Arefin Mohiuddin, Simon Rogers as well as freshman James Mazarakis and senior Brian Cormier, who performed “Down” by Jay Sean with impressive accuracy. A fan favorite was junior Hannah Calderone rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s classic song “Landslide.” Junior Lisa DeLacey commented that Calderone’s performance was her favorite and credited it for “making the show a hit.”

72nd Annual Junior Varieties

Network year by certain performers adding a more cultural aspect to dances. Blue and Gold member and junior Megan Kelly performed a lyrical dance to “The Lonely,” but many of the acts, namely “Passion Latina” and “Essence of Tahiti” had a more exotic feel, which as indicated by the audience’s cheering, was extremely well liked.

The show took a risk, by showing two if its performances as “Youtube Videos,” instead of live. In the first video a group students sang part of One Direction’s hit song “What Makes You beautiful.” The reasoning behind this, as stated by Galdos is that “there were so many solo artists and we could not have them all in the show. So Ms. Phoung came up with the idea of doing a collaboration video so that they would all be able to participate in the show,” and have a ‘solo’ of sorts, all in one act.

It proved successful, with the loudest applause and cheers of the night for freshman Sebastian Patino, who made his singing debut to “let people know who [he] really [is].” The second video was senior Anielly Karise Zeferino and junior Joshua Gaviola singing Phantom of the opera, which was performed live on Saturday night.

The much anticipated performance ended the night, by MHS’s very own break dancing group AirBound. Banor along with senior Justin Pham, sophomore Danny Chen, sophomore Henry Tran and senior Michelle Le have been performing for at least three years. Banor stated “I didn’t know we were going to close the show but when we found out we were all excited.” He claims that the energy they brought was real: “Do what you love and someday someone will love what you do. That’s how I feel like about breakdancing.”

In the end, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Tumblr could not convince Alex. All the social networking led to a blue screen. Then came Google Chrome, played by junior Elyse Valente, who stole the show with her “new sexy, sleek design.”

It seems that the somewhat troubled economy is not affecting Malden’s need for entertainment whatsoever. The junior class raised a total of “over $9000” shared Galdos. But in the end the juniors just wanted to put on an enjoyable show. DeLacey exclaimed after the show, ”the theme was something the audience could connect to, the scripts were well written and the cast worked very hard to make the show a success.”

100 DAYS OF CHRISTENSON

E

very year, relatives, students and teachers alike gather at MacDonald Stadium in order to recognize the Malden High School graduation ceremony. It is normally a time of celebration for the senior class, for the end of their lives as high schoolers and the beginning of their new identities as college students. For the class of 2012, however, things will be a little bit different, as MacDonald Stadium will be in the midst of serious renovations by the time graduation comes around.

As a result, the MHS graduation will be held instead at Malden Catholic High School. The Malden City Council voted 8-3 in favor of the renovations, which are estimated to cost a total of $1.9 million dollars. The changes to be made include adding a Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association regulation track, as well as a new turf field.“Right now, it [is] a grass field. If it rains, you can [not] really do anything for a couple of days.

By going to turf, which is what this project calls for, Malden youth soccer, field hockey, boys and girls lacrosse teams-you name it, they [will] be able to utilize the field and play all the games that cannot be played there now,” said Mayor Gary Christenson.

The problem with renovating MacDonald Stadium during the school year is that it affects MHS students in many ways. Spring sports teams have always practiced at the stadium, as well as hosting home games there. Teams have been forced to retreat to other fields for practices and games; with home games not taking place in Malden, it has become more difficult for Malden residents to attend games, therefore forcing them to stay home rather than go out and show thier support for Malden.

The upside to these inconveniences is, obviously, the many improvements that will affect MHS student athletes as well as other Malden residents involved in sporting events.

Despite Christenson’s positive outlook, some members of the City Council disagree with the decision, due to some of the money being taken from the funding for the Linden Park renovations. “I really believe we need to show fiscal discipline… [the Linden Park renovations] was the plan, let’s stick to it,” said Council member D’Arcangelo. The renovations are slated to be completed

by September, “just in time for kickoffs with our high school football program,” stated Christenson.

I

t seems like only yesterday that Mayor Gary Christenson was elected mayor of the city of Malden, but already his one-hundredth day in office is sneaking up on us. Christenson has kept busy visiting and observing classes at both MHS and various Malden k-8 schools, as well as spoken out on the proposed MBTA bus cuts and jumpstarting a long-talked about renovation to MacDonald Stadium.

Among the issues which he initially wished to work on, and has since made progress with:

MODERNIZING MALDEN “We are now utilizing all facets of social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube,” Christenson stated. A Facebook fan page has been created for the city of Malden, as well as a Twitter feed, both of which have been extremely well-received by the public, with 832 “likes” and over 500 followers, respectively. “As I have said since I first entered public service, the voice of the people should be the loudest,” Christenson said during his inauguration speech on Jan. 2, 2012. His plans on using social media sites to help make those voices heard have proven successful and very popular with the younger residents of Malden.

A NEW TEEN CENTER Another idea that Christenson has begun to put into motion is the construction of a Teen Center in Malden. “We are working hard to add a Teen Center and increasing the number of summer jobs available for our teens,” he promises. In late Feb. he announced that a task force including Cathy MacMullin, who is in charge of the YMCA Teen Nights, and Beth Rosa of the Malden Redevelopment Authority, would begin to scout locations throughout the city that would be the best fit for the center.

“I think one thing that has really overwhelmed us is the interest of the teens themselves,” he told an audience filled with both adults and Malden High School students on Feb. 29, 2012. “It will be a priority to do everything we possibly can to make this center a reality.”

PUBLIC SAFETY Crime is going to be a problem in any largely populated area; Malden is not the first city to have dangerous situation occur, and it will not be the last. Monthly Public Safety Awareness meetings are held once a month, in a different area of the city, so that residents can voice their opinions and concerns to the government itself. Also, following the bank robbery and deadly shooting on March 23-24, 2012, Mayor Christenson has taken immediate action in preventing future tragic events in the city of Malden.

“First, I am relieved that none of our police officers and residents had been injured. Malden Police Department in partnership with many other law enforcement agencies put their lives on the line to protect us and they deserve our gratitude,” he stated gratefully. The CodeRED emergency call system has already been implemented; this system can send up to 60,000 mass calls per hour if need be to any resident of Malden with a registered phone number.

RELOCATION OF CITY HALL Christenson says that the goal that has proven to be the toughest to accomplish is his proposal to relocate Malden’s city hall to a newer, more modern building. “The problem with addressing this issue is that City Hall is connected to the police station and it’s nearly impossible to make a move without looking at both functions,” he explains. “This has made this issue more complicated than initially thought.”

Christenson seems to not only be quickly learning how to have a good handle on the city of Malden, but also which methods of change will work the best to improve the city. He does admit that while it is incredibly hard work, being responsible for an entire city’s worth of people, there are some perks that come with his new job. “I try to stick with just my first name as much as I can, but it is cool to be addressed once in awhile as ‘Mayor,’” he admits. When asked what was his favorite part of being mayor he stated, “I think interacting with the great students we have here in Malden. From reading to the younger students to thoroughly enjoying 72nd Annual Junior Varieties, our students are proving that Malden’s future remains bright.”

Teacher Profile: Shauna Campbell

f one has a question about dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, or fish, then science teacher Shauna Campbell is the one to ask.

Majoring in Marine Biology, Campbell graduated from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. She stated that she has not always wanted to be a teacher, but actually a Marine Biologist ever since the fourth grade.

Campbell was told in high school by one of her teachers that she would be good at teaching. She chose to be in the science department of teaching since she was always “engulfed in science.” She also decided that she could “teach during the year and do Marine Biology activities over the summer.” Some of the activities she has done are working with sea turtles in Florida and teaching a college level class to high school students at Hopkins University.

This summer Campbell plans to study in Mexico at a biological reserve called El Eden and next summer plans to study in Antarctica. At first, Campbell was a student teacher at Dartmouth High School and eventually got the job she has today educating the students at Malden High School.

Campbell has taught Marine Biology, Advanced Placement Environmental Science, Biology, and even a Weather and Climate class throughout her five years teaching at MHS. Out of the entire curriculum, teaching Marine Biology is her favorite. “I still get to do all the things I was doing in school, but now I get to bring it to the high school level and get to enjoy it everyday,” Campbell explained. Teaching may be fun, but the hardest part to Campbell, is how “exhausting” it is. She said it is hard “having enough energy to do things you want to do in your normal day life and then also to do well at work.” However, this does not stop her from teaching three College Prep classes, one Honors, and one AP class.

Before her career as a teacher, Campbell grew up in the Lynn-Saugus area and attended Saugus High School. While she was in high school, she participated in a variety of sports including soccer, basketball, and softball. When she got to college, Campbell decided to join the crew team because she wanted the opportunity to participate in something that was not available in her hometown. Participating in crew influenced her to take on the role of the co-crew coach for MHS. She enjoys being “involved in a sport not everyone in the area has an opportunity to do,” and coaching at the high school level.

Another way Campbell was involved with MHS this year was reliving her high school days as she competed in the Student vs. Faculty game. This was “a lot of fun” for her since she does not “get to play basketball that often.”

Besides coaching and teaching, Campbell likes “enjoying the nice weather” by doing many outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. She also enjoys being with friends and cooking.

Plans for the expensive trip to Costa Rica are not only calling for some lucky MHS students, but Campbell as well. She has volunteered to oversee the trip. This will not be her first time going there, but this still does not stop her excitement. “The food is so good,” exclaimed Campbell, her favorite being the fresh fruit that is indigenous to the area. While she was in college, Campbell traveled to other parts of the world, including Belize and Europe.

Even if one does not have her as a teacher, is not going on the Costa Rica trip, or is not on the Crew team, one can see Campbell on the fourth floor of B house, teaching her students about the wonders of the ocean and the environment.

the great malden melting pot continued from page 1 Thanks to the assistance of the multicultural student committee, MHS faculty, clubs including the French, and the Italian club, the Boston College focus groups, and the advising of English teacher Yahaira Marquez, multicultural week was possible. Like any project, multicultural week began with an idea and some inspiration. A school so diverse should be celebrated, and Marquez felt “we should give the students something to showcase; their culture outside the classroom”.

After gaining support from faculty and students to move forward, the project expanded.

At first the celebration was not intended to be more than a one day celebration, but it grew into a week of defining the basis of one’s culture; the facts, art, clothing, music, dance and food. On day one of multicultural week, information about the over 50 different countries at our school were handed out to students by committee members in the form of fact cards. Many of the MHS students were open to learning about any culture, and express their culture in school such as senior Ayanna Wade and freshman Amalika Lucien who both showed off their skills in their cultural dances.

Throughout the week, more students got involved and interested in multicultural week, adding to the festivities. On day two of multicultural week, traditional artwork and artifacts from the various cultures brought in by teachers and students were displayed on tables. The display tables and informational cards posed as an educational aspect to the cultures. To truly appreciate a culture, one must understand it.

Day three of multicultural week marked an intriguing aspect of the cultures at MHS; the attire. Students on the committee and throughout the entire school dressed up in the traditional attire. Kimonos, conical

The last day of multicultural week, proved a roaring success in which the music, dances, and foods of the various cultures were celebrated. Performances by individual students, the dance group AirBound, and the Haitian, and Latino club entertained a great audience on Thursday April 5, 2012.

The dances consisted of the Bachata, Tahitian, spiritual, and Latin folkloric of the cultures of the students.

The celebration also included a fashion show including many of the students and performers in their traditional cultural attire. Hosted by junior Anita Caceda, and run by the committee, the celebration both educated and entertained. Through the performances students gained a better understanding of their classmates and cultures. Junior Natalie Melo, truly enjoyed the performances stating “I like that everyone is involved, not just the Haitian club or Asian- American, it’s like the everyone club.”

To finish off any great celebration, students and teachers brought in traditional meals from their culture. Rice dishes, desserts, and other meals decorated the tables which kicked off a delicious aroma.

The students interacted with different students and tasted meals from across the globe right in their own school. Lucien felt it was great to “express our cultures in school” and is planning on performing again next year.

Though the week did not go quite as Marquez had planned, she admits “it may have turned out better.” Already, talk of next year’s multicultural celebration has begun, hopefully involving more students, and outside groups. The multicultural week was a true success that allowed all types of students to “be cultural and get involved”.

T

he highly anticipated movie adaptation of The Hunger Games left avid fans starving for more as it ranked in opening global weekend profits of 214 million dollars. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are expected to become international icons as the leading roles in this adventurous thriller turned comedy. With the rest of the trilogy to film on their hands, this is only the beginning.

Panem, the postrevolutionary futuristic North America is where the film and the book starts. The tyrannical government of this time period is called the Capitol, with its chilling overall leader President Snow. The country is divided into 12 Districts, 13 before the uprising. In order to keep tight control over their citizens, the Capitol hosts an annual event, the Hunger Games, in which one boy and one girl over the age of 12 and under the age of 18 from each District is selected to participate. These 24 children will be trained and then thrown into an arena where only one comes out alive, hence the killing each other or dying of natural causes thing.

Staff at the AMC theaters in Boston stated that early birds for the Saturday show following the release were let in at 6:45 for my 7:30 showing, and were waiting quite awhile for that opportunity to come. People waited tensely for their turn to indulge in the gory violence and the sickeningly smitten romance between the main characters Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen.

Though the movie was two hours and 22 minutes long, it needed much more time to fully capture the Games. Katniss’ life in District 12 seemed to be stretched over an appropriate amount of time, but her biography was not fully developed. I would have loved to see how a younger Katniss had to learn how to take care of Prim and herself when her mother was depressed. A younger Katniss learning how to hunt with her father would not have been a bad idea to incorporate either. But the only scene see Katniss and Peeta’s intimate scene in the rain through brief flashbacks that would have left an audience confused if they have not read the book.

condensed in comparison to the book’s timing. Though there were only a few scenes in which shows Katniss trudging through the woods, the transition of one life threatening challenge to another was within minutes of each other.

Though the Capitol, it is citizens and lifestyle looked futuristic and colorful, it seemed so contemporary and low key in way compared to the book’s outrageous descriptions.

I understand that the costumes and designers were trying to create a chic version of the book’s vision to keep it from looking tacky. It was not tasteless in the least.

The blurry fight scenes and unrelenting bits of gore were satisfying enough for a PG-13 movie- or at least for me. Though at times the film left me cringing, there has to be credit given to the actors and actresses that looked so dead.

The director’s

cuts of the movie were ultimately disappointing and infuriating as the key aspects of the book didn’t make the final cut to the big screen. The crew seemed determined to be focusing on both sides of the story – the Games and the Capitol- that it was nearly useless. Grudgingly, I admit that the Gamemakers’ outlook provided a better transition sequence since Lawerence was not narrating. I applaud the director of the movie (Gary Ross) for the creativity it took to grasp the concept of the Gamemaker’s side of the flick.

This film also contained more comic relief than necessary.

I am extremely grateful that the directors of the film left out the romantic side of Katniss and Peeta’s story. The rating of PG13 was more related to violence rather than the mushy side of things.

Overall, the Hunger Games is one of the most well choreographed movies I have seen so far. I would highly recommend that you would drag your friends and family to see it – though it will take a lot of maturity to soak up the situation between Katniss and Peeta. This is the perfect movie for any kind of occasion- date night or just to see some bloody action. Don’t really want to go to the theater to see it? The television network, ABC Family has bought the premier rights for The Hunger Games and will be airing in 2014.

On Call 36 Hours: The Call to Emergency

E

veryday in the daily life, there will always be a loved one who would die young , or someone would have a disease and does not tell anyone about this and a family will finally be reunited . Some people in America would be look ing for a new television series to watch if it is in a different language and possibly because of the plot.

For a lot of people it would be hard

to understand the show in English, so they would either have to look online for subtitles or to have someone they know that language would translate the show to them. For some TV series, it might last for just one season but end with a pretty good plot that would make people to look forward to watch.

If people are looking for a new TV series to watch, they should watch On Call 36 Hours or otherwise known as the Hippocratic Crush.

On Call 36 Hours is a TV series that takes place in a fictional hospital in Hong Kong called Mercy Hospital.

This series involves doctors and

their mentors along with residents of Hong Kong dong real-life operations, discovering different type of diseases and real-life situations.

The story begins with Hong Kong actress Tavia Yeung as Fan Chi Yu and Hong Kong actor, Kenneth Ma as Cheung Yat Kin who both works in Mercy Hospital as medical interns majoring in Neurosurgery. Fan comes from a family of doctors since her father, Fan Chi Ngok played by Hong Kong actor Wilson Tsui is the Neurosurgery specialist at the hospital. Fan and Cheung became fond of each other and Fan slowly falls in love with him, however Cheung is also hesitant towards love ever since he became a doctor because he was the one who caused his brother, Cheung Yat Hong played by Nathan Ngai, to be paralyzed. He is working hard to make his brother’s dreams of studying in the medical field to come true.

However, Hong soon gets killed by a falling glass bottle while trying to save an elderly person who was about to get killed by the falling glass bottle that fell down the ceiling. He was with his girlfriend at the time, Kan Ching Ching played by Candy Chang who was a

specialist trainee in Internal medicine who works at the same hospital as Fan and Cheung. Hong’s death made Cheung unfortunately go to depression but before that, there was a love triangle involved between Fan, Cheung and Fan’s sister, Hung Mei Suet played by Mandy Wong. The two sisters did not get along at first; however they slowly were able to get along months later.

After Hong’s death, Fan was suffering from a very severe illness, which made Cheung very worried and this finally got him back to his feet. Fan was hoping that there would be a cure; however surgery was the only solution and Kin decided to take the job of doing the surgery along with her father. But this would lead viewers into curiosity, will Fan survive and will Cheung and Fan also be able to conquer the obstacles and fall in love with each other again?

The philosophies of the people who would look forward to watching this TV series would be unknown since this would be in question. Whenever they think about it as they watch it, then the predictions that they might have could be more than they expected.

rom hoodies to button downs, and jordans to vans, the 2012 mens spring fashion line is blooming with color. Springs 2012 fashions include lines from top companies, some which include The Hundreds, 10 Deep, Vans, Clarks, Agave, and Stussy. Aside from the top brands, many others can be purchased from mltd.com; Moose Limited.

Fashion designers, Jeff and Lauren Shafer, from the line Agave got their inspiration for the 2012 spring line came from trips to the Sea of Cortez and Baja in California during the 1960s and 70s. The idea that has been with them since these trips is finally becoming a reality for the designers. The most inspiration they received from the trips was the color seen throughout the two places . The purpose of the clothing is to “carry Agave jeans with confidence and ability to enjoy the simple beauty of life” as noted on one of their websites.

It would not be fashion without a major aspect of the outfits, shoes.

Where can one get some really awesome pair of “swagged out” shoes as most people say. Shoe brands, like Clarks, has the latest shoe fashions, with any possible color of Chuk-

kas one could imagine. The Spring 2012 fashion is all inspired with bright colors, which is clearly seen throughout all the major brands.

Aside from the major brands there are top ten items every man must own for this spring. According to Evelyn De Matias, some of the most important articles of clothing include a trench coat, a blazer or sports jacket, Brogue wingtips, patterned sports shirts, a cotton suit, something pink, linens and silks, khakis, v-necks and waistcoats.

With tank tops coming back into fashion for the past few years, people have been trying to pull it off, but with the skateboard industries, taking over the idea, companies like CSS, Volcom, DGK, and others have been providing bright colors, like greens, yellows, and bright red.

After having the tank tops, most people would go and either get a pair regular shorts or get shorts that have either the exact or close to the same color of the tank tops.

Now if you are not into tank tops, then the next best clothing item is the Button Downs.

Button Downs help out greatly because they go with anything you wear, even if you have things like

ripped pants, bright skinny jeans, or even shorts that do not match with anything, then a button down could be a good alternative to add to your wardrobe.

All this can make or break the spring mens fashion, but by the looks of the way businesses are starting to bloom, it will “make” the spring look. Of course, though, it is not the clothes who make the man, it is the man that make the clothes.

Opportunity Through Perseverence W

ith spring approaching, athletes at Malden High School are anxious for a new season. The MHS baseball team is taking advantage of their time and gathering new potential members, along with a renewed ambition to train hard, they still have one goal for the season: to win all their games.

The start of the season led to many influential changes that are better enhancing the team’s ability to comply amongst each other and to better maintain and increase their numbers. Although there were some competitive setbacks last year against opposing teams, the team still managed to work hard and pull themselves back around with some qualifying into states last season.

Coach Kevin Carpenito mentions how, “[the team has] made the state tournament 8 out of the 12 years I have been here.

Aside from all that, Carpenito desires to keep the team strong in order to continue forwards and, “get back into states again.” With perseverance, the team plans on continuing their season with the responsibility of enduring their rivals, and enhancing their abilities to surpass them with ease.

They truly work together and help improve every member on the team that they feel has potential or appear to have an admirable outcome with further practice. Carpenito explains how, “coaching high school baseball was always a goal of mine.” He mainly associates himself with the varsity baseball players, while coach Matt

Gillis coaches the junior varsity and Bill Hanifan coaches the freshmen team. The previous year the team went 11-9 qualifying for the tournament, although lost to Westford academy the first round 4-1.

In a tireless effort, the team persistently gains what is the most important factor on the team as considered by Carpenito: “determination.” Carpenito feels that the team serves a greater purpose with the

work they put in and the bonds they form as they continue throughout each season, and he feels that the current season will be the same.

Although the baseball team has many opportunities to look forward to and many challenges that they must endeavor,they have the skills necessary to help them accomplish their goals in the upcoming season.

Softball Aims for State Championship The softball team, determined and ready, works hard to start their season off strong.

W

ith the state championship in mind, the softball team is ready to exert their hard work and effort that they have put in the off season. For three years, coach John Furlong had the opportunity to see this team mature into a more “experienced, hard-working, [and] talented” group of girls.

As a team, their relationship is strong and stable because they have all been together since they were seven or eight. They have participated in summer softball tournaments with the Malden Hurricanes, “a travel team that consisted of a lot of the girls that play on varsity right now,” commented senior captain Emily Hoffman.

With a strong bond to back them up, the girls are more than prepared to win the state championship. They

know exactly what they want, and the team has become “a lot more intense and serious” about their goals and this upcoming season, according to Hoffman.

Hoffman, determined for the upcoming season, explained how the team “[has] great potential [and] one of the best chances” to achieve their goals to win a state championship. Even if one game does not turn out in their favor, she knows it is her job “to keep everyone motivated, both on and off the field.” Coach Furlong agreed that there must be important “leadership and motivational” skills, and “do things when no one’s looking” to be a team captain.

Along with hours of practice and optimism, the team has an abundance of confidence that they will go a long way during the season. The team already knows their potential, and plans on going further than what they expect from themselves.

Hoffman, remembering what coach Furlong has taught her, learned “hard work beats talent when talent [does not] work hard.” It is impor-

Using this helpful tip, younger students from Malden, including freshmen at Malden High School, can look up to these dedicated softball players. Coach Furlong ad-

vised future softball players to “stay involved [and] always work on the fundamentals.”

With a bright future and successful season in view, there is no doubt that the softball team will achieve their goals and future softball teammates will work hard to keep the hard work consistent in the upcoming years.

Girls Tennis: Hitting the Courts T

he Malden High School girls tennis team started the season off to a rough start, losing both of their first two, back-to-back matches on Monday, April 2, 2012, against North Reading, with a final score of 4-1, and on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, against Boston Latin High School, with a final score of 5-0. Although the final scores did not show it, there were a few highlights of the games, including junior captain Lisa DeLacey’s impressive 6-1, 6-0 individual win against North Reading.

However, starting off not exactly as they had planned will not stop the girls from looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store for them. Under the coaching and guidance of English teacher and returning coach Margaret Pettit, the girls are ready to find success. “Everyone is so determined this season and I know we are going to work extra hard to get even farther than we did last year,” sophomore member Christine Le stated.

This year the team is “very young and very large,” states DeLacey. There are a total of 18 girls, 10 of which are sophomores, 4 of which are freshmen, and finally with 4 returning varsity members. The team and Pettit are working to develop new strategies that will allow them to have an accomplished season, put them on the road towards the Greater Boston League

Championship, and hopefully qualify for the state tournament. “This year we are focusing on our strategy more. We will be spending more practices on technique to improve our playing,” Le stated. Individual improvement and growth are just as important as the technical routines for the girls, something that DeLacey believes “every player should finish the season with.”

With so much to look ahead to, the girls are in need of great guidance not only from their coach, but from the captains as well. This year’s captains are seniors, Wendy Tse, Vivian Le, and junior Lisa DeLacey. The girls also suffered from loss of senior players, including Alison Nguyen, Ivy Bui, and Danielle Ton. Although this creates somewhat of a disadvantage to those who are new to the sport or being a part of the varsity team, it gives them an opportunity to play at the varsity level and gain experience,” DeLacey positively states. Members of the team agree with DeLacey’s confidence. “They definitely left big shoes to fill and we will miss them,” Le continued, “but with some determination we will make them proud.”

The girls will take on what comes at them one step at a time, accepting each day’s challenge not as adversity, but as a gift that will allow them to prove themselves. They look forward to their next match against well-known opponents Revere High School, on April 5, 2012.

Boys Track: The Running Never Stops The track team is training hard to prepare for another win.

T

he Malden High School boys track is preparing harder than ever for this outdoor season. As indoor track came to an end, the runners continue to prepare for this spring’s outdoor track season. For many indoor track members, the season transitioned from indoor track to outdoor track to stay conditioned for the upcoming season. The team continued to practice to ensure that their next season would be a success.

According to sophomore Allan La the team “goes to the weight room two times a week for strengthening [their] cores and [to] also do speed workouts.” They are practicing for their very first meet of the season against Cambridge.

Cambridge has always been one of the tougher teams in all sports, but especially in track.

The track team is looking for a lot of Malden High student athletes to join outdoor track.The boys

team recruited many new freshmen members during the cross country season, in hopes to keep the team strong and continuing for many years.

Last spring they had a great season and a number of athletes compete at the all state meet, and the team has similar expectations for this season. Head Coach David Londino is looking to strengthen the team through hard work and consistency. The team keeps the mindset that the harder the team works the better the team will do. They are all putting in their hardest and trying their best to fulfill their goals.

The team continues to practice and to strive towards their goal of becoming the Greater Boston League champions once again. On an ever larger scale they also strive to send runners to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) states meet.

S

pring is the time when sports truly come into play in the natural outer environment. The Malden High School girls outdoor track team displays their sportsmanship in the practices they endure each day. The girls take upon themselves the responsibility to train and work hard towards their goals in adherence to what they enjoy doing.

As the season begins to unveil the new potential and possibilities, along with all the newcomers joining, the girls track team endeavors further practice under the rejoined summer bound heat.

The girls plan to further strive in outdoor as they had previously done before. Although, this time they plan on working harder than ever to win their meets and possibly to qualify for states.

Coach David Londino insists that, “Haley DeFillipis, Haley Dowdie, Lauren Benoit, Iris Feng, and Jackie Bouley [are] the core of the team.”

He declares ambitiously how they, “had impressive indoor seasons and are returning for outdoor.” They greatly take the responsibility upon themselves and manage the rest of the girls team, whether they’re on a

run or doing a workout.

Although the girls team has a seemingly bright path up ahead in their season, they still face many struggles with their team composition and how they will communicate amongst each other in order to sort out their problems. Londino insists that the girls team, “must focus on working hard each practice, and make sure they are giving themselves the proper nourishment in order to keep healthy.”Londino explains how, “Haley DeFilippis is

Who she is as a runner, leader, and person is extremely impressive, and I’m just hoping our young runners are watching her and learning from her while she’s here.” He hopes to receive many new members this year, since his numbers are commonly not as high as he would like.

Freshman Victoria Hannafin reflects back about her team and how, “[they] get along well, and if during a workout [they are] doing something wrong then [they will]

help each other out. Sometimes [they will] run together but [it is] usually in different groups.” Even with their great communicative skills, Hannafin mentions that their biggest challenge this season will be Cambridge. With great optimism, Hannafin declares that being a part of the girls track team feels “like being part of a family.”

There are a variation of girls this year along with the talents they present which are beneficial to some of the other events, such as the javelin throw and shot put.

Overall, the season seems to bring much optimism and further improvement in their passion and skills for their sport. Much is expected from the girls as they strive to keep their winning record.

Girls Lacrosse scores a new coach A

fter a successful season last year, the girls lacrosse team has been working hard in the offseason to prepare for this spring.

This is Caitlyn Germain’s first season coaching at Malden High School. Last year, Germain coached Malden Youth Lacrosse, and some girls from her team are now freshmen on the junior varsity team.

According to Germain, “having fun and developing is obviously really important, [but we have to] strive for success.” The team’s first game of the season was March 28, 2012 against Bedford High School.

Germain was “very excited to see how [the team] stacks up against the competition.”

Although Malden did not win the game, the girls stayed strong and worked hard until the game was over. Saturday, March 30 is their next game, the first GBL game of the season, so hopefully there will be a different outcome. Germain is “excited to progress as [the team gets] more into the season.”

So far, the girls have reacted well to having a new coach

this year. Germain said “[the girls] have a lot of experience, but there is always room for improvement.”

This year’s senior captains are Stacey Souza and Commie Ayuk.

They both are on varsity this year and coach Germain said that they both, along with the rest of the team, are “improving constantly and developing consistency.”

Though the season has just started, the team has already been practicing, “having fun, and developing.”

With an 0-1 record for the season, the girls are staying optimistic, and will improve as the season progresses.

Boys Lacrosse Off To A Good Start T

he Malden High School boys lacrosse team has been preparing themselves for the start of the season in the on coming weeks.

The team size seems to be growing in numbers every year. With all the new players this season is a great opportunity to be the turnaround season the team has been looking towards. Aside from all the newer players, there have been many players on the team have now had the experience to help the team win some games.

Senior Christian Catricala thinks that “the boys show a lot of heart, coach Brandon Maney makes sure we know that winning is not everything, but we all know that we go into the games wan­ting to win.” In past years, the team has somewhat struggled with the competition of the schools who have had a long and running lacrosse program unlike MHS. With that being said, it is not giving players on the team reason to doubt, “Every practice we get better, all of us know that it is not going to be easy for us to be a big threat in the sea-

son but every single one of is willing to try.” Catricala commented.

The captains on the team, seniors Dimas Bardales and Daniel Glynn are leading the team in the right direction, making sure that all the younger players understand the game and that the team chemistry flows in a main focus of the captains. “They always make sure there are not any problems within the team, they know how important a good team atmosphere is. Each one of the players on the lacrosse team from freshman to varsity will have a chance to contribute to the team’s success rate throughout the season.

“Coach likes to give everyone on the team a chance.” As most can tell, the lacrosse team is not like most other sport teams, unlike the teams where winning is the main focus, the MHS lacrosse team give all kids who want to try this sport a chance to try and meet new people within the school.

This is the type of atmosphere that coach Maney wanted to get the players to see.

Abundance Of New Members Lead to a Sucessful Team not used to the amount of work the crew team puts into practices and are trying to accommodate to their new schedule. The team is working on improving team effort. Some members need to put in all their effort to make sure that the team is improving so that they know they are prepared. The boys team also wants to maintain their Greater Boston League title and the boys varsity team want to qualify for finals and states. Whereas the girls want to start getting on the map and start building a strong team to be able to compete.

But in order to make a sport fun for everybody they need to make

sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. “Especially with the several new members we have this season, it is not easy to detect discomfort and insecurity in a team member,” stated senior captain Manny Martinez. The varsity team and coaches are trying to make the environment enjoyable and exciting for everyone.

They want to make sure everyone is comfortable. “[Crew] is really fun and different,” exclaimed Campbell.

The crew team is happy and excited to work with all the new members and hopes that it will be a great season with all the effort and hard work everyone can contribute to the team.

ith the amount of new and returning crew members this spring their future looks bright for the season. The crew team has a lot of new members than they last year. They look forward to training everyone and to future races. There are 64 members this year and it is the “most in five years since [she] has been coaching,” stated coach Shauna Campbell. Although having a lot of members can get hectic the crew team has managed to fig-

ure out a way to organize how they practice. They have tried different ways to organize practices to see which one helps everyone get the same amount of training. So far they have decided to divide practice into two sessions so that everyone can get the help they need. “We do not want the team too seperate,” stated Campbell. So they try to get the team together as much as possible.

Drive to Fifth National Title Complete for BC Hockey

I

t was a magical season for the Boston College Eagles hockey team and the six-month ride to a fifth Frozen Four national championship concluded on Saturday night, Apr. 7, 2012 with a 4-1 victory over Ferris State University in Tampa, Fla. With the win, BC caps the season with a 33-10-1 record while winning the final 19 games en route to the school’s third national title in just the last five years.

“I feel honored and privileged to be a part of the BC program, the university and specifically the hockey program,” senior captain Tommy Cross said in the post-game press conference following the championship game. “This was the best team I’ve ever been on. We just had something in our mind that the season was only going to end one way and that was our main focus.”

Throughout the season, Cross has been greatly complimented by his legendary coach Jerry York for his tremendous work ethic and leadership qualities. With his collegiate hockey career complete, he will transition to becoming a professional as a member of the Boston Bruins organization.

Cross is a native of Simsbury, Conn. and was drafted by the Bruins out of high school in the second round of the 2007 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Boston hockey

fans have all the more reason to support Cross in his journey to pro hockey.

The Eagles lost twice in Maine on Jan. 20-21, 2011 and then rattled off the school-record streak, which included two wins in the Beanpot in February, four wins in the Hockey East Tournament in March and four NCAA Tournament wins.
