hile few people know Eugine Szeto on a personal level, almost everyone knows his name. His fame arises from a sophisticated work ethic and a jarring devotion to his own learning. Having a one-way ticket to New Haven, Connecticut, where he will be attending Yale University, only reinforces his reputation as Malden High’s academic superhero. But Szeto’s dedication to learning is actually far more passionate than it is robotic, despite his collaboration at the Botball Tournament in April. “[I like classes that have] questions beyond the scope of the material,” he says, “ we become something more than animals or robots.”

2. Olivia Verdone P
lanning on attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall, Olivia Verdone describes her high school experience as a challenge. Like many students, the transition from a K-8 school to Malden High School was “extremely difficult for me...it was a whole new world from middle school, transitioning from fifteen minutes of homework a night to seven classes with an hour and a half of homework, going from being a top student to having a bunch of top students.” Verdone tends to experience anxiety over changes in her life, and she went through a period of time at the beginning of her freshman year where she “went home and cried every night” because she was so stressed. In addition, she also had some of the hardest freshman teachers in the high school, which was also “extremely challenging.” Continued on page 8.
