The “naust” is a 100-year-old boathouse that has been renovated and relocated inside the hotel building. All the decorations are authentic and donated by locals who have handed the memorabilia down from generation to generation. This cosy building serves as our “living room” for our guests to relax in during the wintertime with board games, books and candles.

alangen Resort is situated in one of the most visited Northern Light hotspots in the Tromsø area. "The Watch" enhances our guest's opportunity of seeing the mystical Northern Lights. We prepare for this magical journey with a briefing about this natural phenomenon and the current conditions before we set off to our very own basecamp, Camp Nikka, located just a 20-minute walk from the resort. Camp Nikka is strategically located behind our resort in a location that experiences less cloud activity. Our guides statistics in recent years show that chances of experiencing Northern Lights here are around 85 per cent! Please note that our tour does not include "chasing" the lights in a minibus because of our unique location. Instead, we have chosen this basecamp experience to allow all our

DOG SLEDDING THROUGH THE WHITE SILENCE

L

ead a team of eager huskies through the snow-covered Arctic landscape while admiring the breathtaking scenery. Did you know that Malangen Resort is one of few dog sledding providers in Northern Norway where the dogs are not chained up but instead live two good freinds together in pens? Located near Camp Nikka, we have an intimate group of eager huskies just waiting to take you into the wilderness. We will start the adventure with a lesson about how to manage your own husky team. We drive in pairs (one driver and one passenger) with a chance to swap places halfway. The adventure concludes with a delicious light snack by an open fire. We have built our camp small enough, so there is no room for mass tourism and stress of any kind. You can focus on enjoying one of the best experiences the far north has to offer!

All our dog sledding trips include thermal clothing, a lesson in managing your husky team and a hot meal after we take care of the dogs. Please note that guests will drive the sled rather than ride with a guide. Dog sledding is an activity that requires a certain level of physical fitness and is not recommended for individuals with back or neck injuries or for pregnant women.

UNCHAINED DOGS

The dog yard at Malangen Resort has been designed with the welfare of the dogs in mind. The dogs here are unchained. They live in pairs in pens where they can move freely around. To ensure that the dogs get enough physical and mental exercise every day throughout the year, we have a big yard where they can run and play in groups together. 31

THE THRILL OF SKI TOURING IN MALANGEN The combination of alpine mountains and blue fjords makes the Malangen peninsula a unique destination for skiing. Several mountains rising over 1,000 meters from the fjords offer magnificent terrain for skiing. Malangen Resort is only a few minutes drive from a variety of routes for mountain climbing. Guests can organise their ski vacation entirely on their own, based on a stay at the resort, or choose different degrees of facilitation and organisation from our side. We tailor trips to the guests' wishes. Our daily organised ski tours include transportation to and from the mountain. Guests can bring their own ski equipment or rent equipment from our partner in Tromsø city centre. Alternatively, the necessary specifications can be provided to us, and rental skis will be ready for use at the

resort upon arrival. Skiing guests can drive their own rental car to the resort or can be picked up by us in Tromsø city centre or at the airport. Our organised tours range from "easy" to "medium" difficulty. Safety is our top priority, and our guides are certified. We focus on the experience on tour and when you return to the resort. We offer tours to seven mountain peaks near the resort, which means you can spend a whole week at the resort and have a new mountain to ski up and down every day. Those not as keen on ski touring can spend days relaxing in the outdoor bubble bath, going dog sledding, and enjoying delicious food made from local ingredients at the resort's restaurant.

SUMMIT TO RESORT

This is a mountain and ski tour for participants who already have skiing experience but prioritize the nature experience and social aspect over the competitive instinct. Couples and groups of friends often go on this type of guided tour. The goal is the view and an amazing skiing experience, not to be the first to reach the top or climb the most altitude in a day." At the resort, our continental breakfast is included in the "Resort Fee"; see page 16. Participants in the day's summit tour can make a solid packed lunch at breakfast. Paper for sandwiches is provided by the staff. Bringing a thermos for coffee or tea refills from breakfast is also recommended. The tour day begins with a meeting with the guide in the lobby or in our locker room facilities at 10:00 a.m. to finalize the plan for the day. The tour will be tailored to the weather and snow conditions, and the difficulty level will also be adjusted according to the wishes of the participant group of 2-6 people. Then, the ski equipment is loaded onto the minibus, and the guide drives to the starting point for the climb. This drive takes ten to thirty minutes, depending on which mountain and ascent route has been chosen for the day.

42

Around 11:30 a.m., the guide and participants will arrive at the starting point and be ready for the climb. Participants should be prepared to be outdoors for 3-5 hours, depending on the tour length. Clothing recommendations for this are described in a separate fact box. The mountain climb is done leisurely, led by our guide. The ascent should be enjoyed, meaning unnecessary high heart rate, heavy breathing, or lactic acid buildup should be avoided. A good lunch break is planned during the day, as well as regular breaks to enjoy the view on the way up. At the top, it is customary to take a break for snacks, photography, and to adjust clothing and equipment before the tour's dessert, the descent. The guide plans the route according to avalanche risk and snow conditions. Once at the bottom, guests are driven back to Malangen Resort in our minibus, with arrival between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on the chosen mountain peak.

Safety: At Malangen Resort, we prioritize high competence in avalanche safety and first aid, as well as excellent pedagogical skills among our guides to maintain safety on our tours. We only use certified guides who strive to provide a skiing experience tailored to the group's wishes and expectations.

Mountains And Routes: Seven mountain peaks on the Malangen peninsula can be reached within a 30-minute drive from the resort, making them easily accessible with transportation. Ski touring and avalanche expert Espen Nordahl has mapped various routes up the mountains and has combined his own experiences with the knowledge of experienced locals to determine these routes up and down the mountains. These routes and maps form the foundation for describing the best ski touring options on the Malangen peninsula in detail, and for skiing up and down the mountains as safely as possible. Guests on Malangen Resort's "Resort to Summit" follow in the foot-

steps of some of Norway's most experienced Arctic mountain skiers. Nordahl has been one of the most enthusiastic ski touring enthusiasts in Tromsø since he moved to the city in 1982. He has worked as a project manager at the Centre for Avalanche Research and Education (CARE) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and as an avalanche forecaster for the Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority. Nordahl is the editor of the book Safer Ski Touring in Norway.

Self-Catering: Everyone is welcome to come in a rental car, bring their own skis, and plan ski tours in Malangen without a guide or other assistance from us. We recommend that guests who do this carefully follow avalanche forecasts and do not go on tours alone. We also recommend purchasing the book Ski Touring in Troms, available on websites such as amazon.com. This book has a chapter on Malangen, including routes for ascending and descending the mountains.

47

THE SEVEN SUMMITS Seven of the mountain peaks on the Malangen peninsula are about a 30-minute drive, making them easily accessible with transport from the resort. Various routes up the mountains have been mapped by ski touring and avalanche expert Espen Nordahl, who has literally written the book Ski Touring in Troms. Nordahl has combined his own experiences with the knowledge of experienced locals when working out the routes up and down the mountains. These routes and maps provide the foundation for being able to describe the best ski touring options on the Malangen peninsula in detail, as well as for being able to ski up and down the mountains as safely as possible. Guests on Malangen Resort’s “Resort to Summit” follow in the footsteps of some of Norway’s most experienced Arctic mountain skiers.

Malangen Resort’s ski touring adventures have been designed in collaboration with Espen Nordahl (b. 1960). He has been one of the most eager ski touring enthusiasts in Tromsø since he moved to the city in 1982. Nordahl has written the book Ski Touring in Troms, which is the bible for the skiers in the ski touring capital Tromsø.

Q&A What prerequisites are required for an organized ski touring trip? One must have basic skiing skills. Those who have yet to go on ski tours before should have experience skiing in ski resorts at a minimum. Those with limited experience should inform their guides in advance so that the trip can be adapted. What is the difficulty level of an organized ski touring trip? Guests with different levels of experience are welcome to participate in our tours. To create the best experience, we tailor private tours adapted to the wishes and abilities of the day's participants. However, we do not organize trips with a high level of difficulty, as this is to maintain the highest level of safety. Our tours are for those who prioritize the view and nature experience over speed and the number of vertical meters per day.

meters to be climbed on the organized tours ranges from 640 to 1140 meters. How long does it take to climb? The various tours take 2 to 3-4 hours to walk from the starting point to the top. One can also take some extra time going up. The trip and the view should be enjoyed. How steep is it? On five tours, no sections have more than 27 degrees of incline. On a couple of the tours, some sections have 30-35 degrees of incline. How long does it take to ski down? The various tours take between one and two hours to ski down. The descents are faster if one does not stop along the way to take breaks. However, we recommend enjoying the view and taking photographs.

How high are the mountains? The 7 Malangen Peninsula mountains are most suitable for ski touring. They have described routes with good maps ranging from 767 to 1168 meters above sea level. Four of these mountain peaks are over 1000 meters above sea level. How many vertical meters are climbed on a trip? The number of vertical meters to be climbed is similar, and the height of the mountain is above sea level. The Malangen Peninsula is an extended mountain range rising from the sea. The number of vertical 50

What is the risk of avalanches? Our tours cannot be considered dangerous, but all travel in snow-covered mountains carries a risk, so it is recommended to go with a qualified guide. Five of our routes are classified according to the ATES standard as "1-Simple" (green), while two of the tours are classified as "2-Challenging" (blue). None of our tours is in the "3-Complex" (black) category. The choice of route for the current day is clarified every morning concerning avalanche warnings, weather forecasts, snow, and conditions. Our

guides are trained and qualified to make safe assessments, and no unnecessary risks are taken. What level of fitness is required? It is sufficient to be in what can be called "normal fitness." All ski tours involve walking uphill in winter conditions for two to four hours, requiring a lot of energy. On the other hand, one does not walk at a high pace, so one does not have to be young and fit to manage this. The tours' length and steepness can also be clarified and adapted in consultation with our guides. Do I need to bring my own ski equipment and safety gear? No, you can rent all the ski equipment from Malangen Resort or our partner. See the dedicated section about this. What clothing do you recommend for such a trip? Please refer to the dedicated fact box with recommended equipment and clothing. Do I need to bring all the clothing myself? Yes, you need to bring all the clothing yourself. If you are still determining what you need or if you are missing any garments, our partner Tromso Outdoor can assist you. They are experts in clothing and equipment for ski touring and sell high-quality clothes. Please see www.tromsoutdoor.no.

What is the season for ski touring in Malangen? For the mountains where we organize tours, the shortest seasons are from January to May, and the longest is from December to June. The challenges from December to February are the limited daylight and severe cold, while the challenge in June is varying snow conditions and the increasingly long walk to reach the snow-covered area. Our organized tours are scheduled from March 20th to May 10th because this is the period with plenty of daylight, comfortable temperatures, and the safest snow conditions. How do I get from Tromsø/ the airport to Malangen Resort, and what does it cost? Malangen Resort has minibuses that transport guests from the airport and Tromsø city centre to the resort and back. The cost for such transportation is NOK 595 per person each way. The journey takes just over an hour. The price includes all expenses, including passing through two toll booths. Among other things, you drive through an underwater tunnel to get out to the beautiful Malangen Peninsula. Our shuttle is available 24/7 on all 365 days of the year but must be booked at least 48 hours in advance (see page 12). We recommend booking transportation at the same time as booking the stay for optimal holiday logistics, where valuable time is spent on things other than waiting. Can I come in my own car? Yes, you can come in your own

car. There is free parking at Malangen Resort. Is there an opportunity to dry shoes and ski clothes between trips? For participants in organized tours, the resort has a changing room and a lockable storage room with shoe dryers, hanging options for clothes, and warmair heaters.

How far in advance do you need to book such a tour? Our regular daily tours should be booked as far in advance as possible to secure exact dates. If the booking is on short notice, it should still be done at least 2-3 days before the tour. If equipment rental is also needed, the tour should be booked at least one week in advance, so that equipment can be obtained and bindings and skis can be adjusted.

Do you have skis for rent, and if so, what does it cost? Yes, we have skis and other equipment for rent. This requires that you provide the necessary specifications well in advance. Please see the dedicated fact box with products and prices. However, we recommend that you rent equipment from our partner Tromso Outdoor. Please see www.tromsooutdoor.no. Can skiing equipment be rented in Tromsø city centre and taken to the resort, and how much does it cost? Yes, the equipment can be rented directly from our partner Tromso Outdoor. Please visit www.tromsooutdoor.no for more information. Do you have to stay at the resort to join an organized ski tour? Participants must stay at Malangen Resort the night before an organized ski tour. This is due to transportation regulations. To transport guests to/from the mountain without a taxi license, the participant must be an overnight guest at the resort.

Where can you find more information about skiing in Malangen? The book "Ski touring in Troms" is available on amazon.com. The book is in English and covers 116 mountain peaks in Troms County. Malangen is dedicated to its own chapter in this book. The book has rich map material showing routes for ascents and descents of 7 mountains on the Malangen peninsula. Each tour has its own description. Buy it at amazon.com.

A HIKER'S PARADISE The Malangen fjord is surrounded by majestic mountains. Some of them, such as Bentsjordtinden, rise more than 1,100 metres above the fjord. However, given the local topography, there are summit hikes to suit all levels. Some prefer a short afternoon hike with the children up to the nearest vantage point, while others wish to spend the entire day hiking in the mountains and reach the summit of the highest mountains on the map.

There is no electricity up at Camp Nikka, which means there is virtually no artificial lighting. This enhances your Northern Lights experience and makes Camp Nikka a real hotspot in the Tromsø region for experiencing this natural phenomenon. On cold winter nights or during nature-based experiences in the daytime, you can warm up in one of our lavvu tents. Sitting on a warm reindeer skin on a wooden bench beside the open fire, you will quickly warm up and get new energy for your next adventure. This also adds an exciting dimension to the overall experience. Coffee brewed on the open fire up in the wilderness tastes great and will also help to keep you warm. Welcome to memorable wilderness experiences at Camp Nikka! 83
