OUR FOCUS FOR THE FUTURE The main objective of MAKNA is to pool and utilise all efforts, expertise and finance from all sectors of the society, to eradicate cancer and to reduce the related pain, morbidity and the suffering that cancer patients undergo. MAKNA is currently focussing on three main areas:  The provision of quality treatment and care at its state-of-art cancer institute.  Fund Raising activities to generate funds so as to finance the numerous activities carried out by it in pursuit of its mission. 

PRESIDENT’S REVIEW

As we move forward and gain wider recognition in our cause against cancer, MAKNA continues to face more challenges. But together, we at MAKNA and with the help of many of you out there, we have managed to weather the storm and even overcome some of the challenges.

Meanwhile the number of patients treated at Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM continues to rise. From 2003 until 2004, more than 30,000 cases were treated here. There were 33 cases undergoing bone marrow transplant. Under its bursary scheme, MAKNA provides financial assistance to 153 patients in 2003 and 318 patients in year 2004 from more than 30 government and university hospitals throughout Malaysia. To ensure that these financially challenged patients continue to be accessible to the best available treatments, MAKNA would have to have high quality transparent fundraising approaches. As a result the number of MAKNA fundraising projects continues to receive overwhelming support from members of the public of all races. Payroll Giving (PG) and the Direct Debit Donor Programme (DDDP) are currently the major sources of sustainable income for MAKNA. These are complemented by other projects like the Direct Mail, One-Sen Campaign and the Donation Box Campaign which are among the more than 200 projects undertaken every year. The Payroll Giving project saw the increased participation of donors from the government departments, statutory bodies and the private sectors. These include the Inland Revenue Board. Its Director General has been fully supportive of our roadshows held at their branches throughout the country. The DDDP Programme was improved from time to time using donors and members of the public feedback as a basis. The donation box campaign is a long-term joint effort with Rapid KL (formerly Syarikat Prasarana Negara) where donation boxes are placed at major Putra and Star LRT stations. The time frame for the One-Sen Campaign has been extended and it will also include secondary schools. Thanks to the Ministry of Education for their continuous support. MAKNA continues to be nominated as beneficiaries to a number of fundraising projects undertaken by various organizations. It is also heartening to know of the increased involvement of schools and institutions of higher learning, both public and private in the issue of cancer. Most of them took the advantage of holding various kinds of awareness cum fundraising programmes of their own. Through these campaigns the students were able to learn more about cancer and how to avoid it, while at the same time donating to a worthy cause. However, we are still not happy about the continued high incidence of smoking among the young. It is a battle not easy to win.

Other than providing quality treatment and care for cancer patients MAKNA has embarked on our own programmes in combating cancer through education and research. MAKNA’s own Periwinkle Celebrations was celebrated over a one-month period with activities such as cancer talks and exhibitions, and fundraising. It is getting better by the year. The successful MAKNA Cross Nation Run, with its two-pronged objectives of cancer awareness and fundraising, had helped to enhanced MAKNA’s branding position nationwide especially among those in the rural areas. Throughout the year roadshows were also held at various schools, colleges and shopping centers to bring a message on the dangers of cancer and the importance of practicing healthy living to students and members of the public. And we stongly believe in the philosophy that even poor cancer patients should have the right to be accessible to the best. In the area of research, MAKNA continues to give Cancer Research Awards to two researchers each for the years 2003 and 2004. Meanwhile MAKNA continues to monitor the researches which it had sponsored in many local universities. We are glad to announce that we have managed to conduct these researches (17 main topics) at more than half of the normal cost. When MAKNA was officially launched in 1995, little did we dream that within 10 years since its inception, we would have a treatment center so soon and would be helping so many cancer patients in need. However, while celebrating MAKNA’s tenth anniversary in 2004 we began to realize how far we have traveled and how much we have done. Nevertheless all these would not have been achieved without the support of so many people, personal friends, the Government, the corporate sectors, the management of HUKM, the Board of Trustees and EXCO members (past & present) staff and management of Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM, MAKNA Headquarters, and the numerous individuals who have contributed directly or indirectly, big or small to make MAKNA what it is today. We hope that you will all continue to be with us to enable us to provide the best even to the poorest. We humbly plead.

B.O.T CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW Today the number of cancer cases is still on the increase. More and more new cases are estimated each year. The number of cancer centres in the country too has increased but the cost of treatment remains unaffordable to many, especially the poor. The existence of MAKNA provides some hope to the financially challenged to at least have some accessibility to good treatment. This, to a certain extent complements the government’s efforts. The treatment centre at Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM has treated more than 30,000 cases while the bone marrow transplant unit has performed 33 transplants. Many are the poor we have mentioned above. In addition MAKNA also have provided financial assistance to patients undergoing treatment at about 30 government hospitals including university hospitals around the country. To continue this worthy mission, fundraising remains our greatest challenge. As such MAKNA’s activities are carried out with great prudence. MAKNA also believes strongly in the philosophy of transparency and integrity. This philosophy is highly practised in the administration and management of all its activities particularly those involving its donors and members of the public. Today, MAKNA has been acknowledged as one of the, if not the leading not-forprofit organisation in its fight against cancer. This has been made possible through the hard work and patience of the staff of MAKNA headquarters and also the staff at Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM. It would also not be made possible, one way or another without the support of all who have contributed towards this cause. I take this opportunity to thank the members of the Board of Trustees, each and everyone who has made contributions and given their support and hope that you will continue to be with us in our mission.

TREATMENT CENTRE Wad Onkologi Tengku Ampuan Afzan Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM On January 20, 2003 HRH the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin AlMu’adzam Shah, who is also the patron of MAKNA officially renamed the MAKNA Onkologi Wad as Wad Onkologi Tengku Ampuan Afzan, Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM. Members of the Pahang royal family, the chairman and the president of MAKNA, the vice-chancellor of UKM and a number of VIPs witnessed the historic ceremony. A total of 200 guests were present. Named after the late Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, the Oncology ward is made up of 16-bedded male and 18-bedded female ward. After the ceremony HRH the Sultan and his entourage were taken on a tour of the wards where HRH gave away gifts to the patients. To commemorate the event, an exhibition on cancer was also held to bring awareness on cancer to members of the general public. The establishment of the cancer institute also marks a milestone in the relentless battle against cancer. Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM provides comprehensive treatment and care to cancer patients who have been referred to, from hospitals throughout the country. For year 2003 and 2004, approximately 30,000 cancer cases treated at the institute. Cancer patients who seek treatment and care at the institute are referral patients, mainly from governmental hospitals across the counrty. They are mainly made up of two groups. The first group comprises of financially challenged patients and therefore are not in a position to pay for treatment. The other group of patients are those who can afford to pay the nominal sum for treatment. IKM-HUKM does not turn away patients who cannot afford to pay for the cost of treatment. Therefore the cost is borne by MAKNA and the operational cost of running the institute continues to increase. Hence, the support and contribution in funds from the public, private sector and Malaysians are still needed to carry out our task. Total expenditure paid by MAKNA for operating IKM-HUKM in year 2003 is RM2,404,323.00 and for the year 2004 is RM1,920,380.67. Today almost 45,000 Malaysians are diagnosed with cancer yearly and MAKNA intends to be able to treat as many patients as possible.

RESEARCH One of the main objectives of MAKNA’s mission is to enhance cancer research in Malaysia. MAKNA has embarked into research rather actively since year 1999. The research projects thus far undertaken have been in collaboration with various institutions of higher learning. The fund which will be provided by MAKNA to the project should be seen as a collaborative framework among MAKNA and the Institutions. MAKNA in partnership with various institutions of higher learning aims to achieve the following objectives;  Gain deeper understanding of the cause of cancer and the pathology of cancer initiation and progression  Make prevention our first line of defense against cancer  Detect many cancers early enough to make successful treatment possible  Effectively eliminate many cancers  Manage other cancers as chronic diseases  Dramatically improve quality of life for cancer patients and survivors In addition, it is also MAKNA’s intention to compliment the government in its bid to increase cancer research activities in Malaysia, and to motivate local scientific discovery in the field of cancer research.

MAKNA Cancer Research Award

The primary objective of this award is to motivate aspiring researchers and health professionals to indulge in/venture into new research areas related to the treatment of cancer. Annually research grants amounting to a maximum RM50,000.00 is used to fund the selected research proposals by Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Two recipients received the grant on 8 January 2004 at the Academy of Sciences Malaysia for the Cancer Research Award 2003. They were Dr. Vishna Devi V. Nadarajah for her research study entitled “Cloning of a Bacillus Thuringiensis Parasporal gene with in-vivo cell-killing action on leukaemic cells”. Dr. Vishna was attached to the International Medical University, Bukit Jalil. Another recipient for the award was Pn. Maha Abdullah @ Maha-Laksmwmi-Pon from Universiti PUTRA Malaysia (UPM). Pn. Maha’s research study was “Identification of diagnostic markers and mechanisms involved in early relapse of acute myeloid leukaemia samples associated with high proliferative potential”. Both recipient were awarded a grant worth of RM25,000 each. The fourth grant was given to two other recipients for the Cancer Research Award 2004. The ceremony was held at the Universiti PUTRA Malaysia (UPM) Auditorium on 11 January 2005. The research grant was worth RM50,000.00. The recipients were Dr. Latifah Saiful Yazan from UPM and Ms. Lim Moon Nian from the Institute of Medical Research (IMR). Each received RM20,000 and RM30,000 respectively as research grants for their area of study.

Dr. Latifah’s research study was on “The in vivo anti-tumour promoting activity of bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria on chemical carcinogenesis in mice skin”. Meanwhile, Ms. 12

Majlis Kanser Nasional (National Cancer Council) Lim Moon Nian’s research study was on “The suppression of multidrug resistant gene in acute myeloid leukaemia cells by small interfering RNA (siRNA)” For year 2005, MAKNA will be increasing the amount given for its Cancer Research Award to RM100,000 for two researchers. To date, a total of RM190,000 has been given to local researchers to conduct their research studies since 2001.

MAKNA, UPM and HUSM Cancer Vaccine Research Collaboration

The project is on development of broad spectrum cancer vaccines using the NDV and Appovax viruses. The duration of the study is 5 years and the amount of funds allocated for the first phase is RM1.62 million, that is RM1.16 million for UPM and RM457,000 for HUSM. The project can be divided into two parts which are the development of a broad spectrum NDV anti cancer vaccine and the development of a broad spectrum CAV-VP3 (Appovax) vaccine.

Stem Cell Transplant Centre for East Coast

The centre is to be located at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan. This project is the collaboration between MAKNA and HUSM. The MoU was signed on 25 March 2001. MAKNA has allocated RM250,000.00 as seed money for the setting up of the centre in HUSM. This unit will be the first of its kind for the East Coast population. The centre needs RM3.2 million for it to be set up. MAKNA will assist HUSM in getting the funds. This is in line with the mission of MAKNA to make available service centres including transplantation centres for all parts of the country.

Collaboration with Fakulti Sains Kebangsaan Bersekutu (FSKB), UKM on Nutritional Study

It is a collaborative project involving MAKNA and FSKB, UKM. The main objective is to carry out research projects pertaining to the effect of nutrition and diet behavioural patterns with respect to the major ethnicity. Hence, to extrapolate based on the information obtained on the correlation of these factors (s) and the increasing incidences of cancer. Total cost for the study is RM200,000.00. HLA Typing Project, IMR

MAKNA has agreed to provide a sum of RM679,400.00 under the MoU signed on 13 November 1999 to support towards improving and extending Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) Typing Services in the light of the establishment of a National Bone Marrow Donor Registry (MMDR) at the Division of Immunology IMR. The money is meant for the purchase of reagents for HLA Typing, a few additional laboratory equipment, minor renovation and training for officers. Additional budget of RM300,000.00 was approved in 2004 by MAKNA to purchase a machine called Bio Plex Protein Array System. This machine will speed up HLA Typing process so that the target to get 40,000 donors in 3 years can be achieved. Below are the details of bone marrow donor registry since its establishment. Year

Development of Leukaemia Vaccine at HUKM by Prof. Cheong

The purpose of this project is to develop leukaemia vaccines that are based on dendritic cells. Dendritics cells (DC) can be grown from stem cells. If exposed to tumour extract they can capture tumour specific antigens. In animals this has shown to cause tumour regression. These DC’s also inhibit growth of human tumour cell lines. The objective of the research is to generate DC pulsed with tumour cells from peripheral blood or bone marrow of patients with leukaemia’s and then use these DC for the generation of anti tumour cellular cytotoxicity against the tumour cells. The duration of the study is 3 years. The entire project is expected to cost around RM1.3 million of which MAKNA will provide RM500,000.00 in line with EXCO’s decision at its meeting on 8 September 2001. RM300,000 was allocated for the project in year 2002. The project is progressing well and undergoing clinical trial phase 2.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS Cancer is an escalating medical problem in Malaysia. Currently, it is the second leading cause of death in Malaysia. The five most common cancers reported in Malaysia for men are lung, nasopharynx, colon, leukaemia and rectum. For women, the five most common cancers are breast, cervix, colon, corpus uteri and rectum. Up to 90% of cancers in Malaysia are associated with individual life styles and the environment. Hence, most cancers can be prevented by the change of a suitable healthy life style and better monitoring of the environment. The main objectives of MAKNA’s awareness programme are: 1. To promote and educate the general public and target groups on information about cancer and the needs to prevent cancer through the early detection of the disease and promote healthy lifestyle among Malaysians. 2. To ensure committed participation from the government sector, corporate bodies and the targeted groups that will enable effective dissemination of knowledge and information on cancer. 3. To assist patients and the general public in acquiring information and assistance pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment and counselling of cancer.

The target groups for these awareness campaigns are patients, their families, high riskgroups, health-care professionals and the community including school children. By disseminating such vital information, patient care will be enhanced and more effective. Health education has been widely accepted as an important tool in the control of cancer because of increased recognition of the behavioural and socio-cultural factors involved in their prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of cancer education is to educate people and thus help them make the right informed decisions and take necessary measures to improve their own health and the health of their community. Education is also necessary to help the individual to decide and act to adopt preventive and curative measures in relation to the information and misconceptions they have had. MAKNA’s cancer awareness programmes include the annual Periwinkle Day Celebrations (PDC), cancer talks, e.g. in schools, colleges, universities, corporations and associations; health exhibitions, e.g. at STAR LRT stations, PUTRA LRT stations and shopping complexes; familiarization trips to Institut Kanser MAKNA – Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia by various organizations. Roadshows and campaigns with several partners are held, mostly pharmaceutical and health product companies such as Abbot, Pathlab, Vitagen and Pharmaniaga. We have, somewhat, been able to create some impact on the public. The school children are good targets – for change.

Periwinkle Celebration Day 2003 On December 7, 2003 MAKNA’s annual Periwinkle Day Celebration (PDC) kicked off with the Run of Hope from STAR LRT Am pang station and culminated with the lighting of Menara Kuala Lumpur in purple. This seventh celebration lasted for a month and ended on January 7, 2004. The Run of Hope which started at the Ampang STAR LRT station participated by cancer patients, cancer survivors, nurses and volunteers was meant to send a strong message of hope and courage to cancer patients and survivors. Present at the launch were Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin, MAKNA’s president, Encik Zulkifli Mohamad, CEO of Menara Kuala Lumpur and YM Raja Mohamad, Corporate Markete General Manager of Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, who were co-organisers of the celebrations. Besides the launch, there was the significant and meaningful lighting of the Candle of Hope at the cascading pool of Menara Kuala Lumpur, entertainment by local artistes, Adilla and InTeam; and a dance performance by DanceSteps Studio. Throughout the month-long celebrations, cancer awareness programmes in the form of health talks, exhibitions and health clinics were held. To coincide with the launch, MAKNA, Hospis Malaysia and National Cancer Society held a two-day cancer exhibition at Menara Kuala Lumpur on 6 – 7 December 2003. Cancer exhibitions were also held on 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st December at PWTC STAR LRT station and Bandaraya STAR LRT on 27 – 28 December 2003. During this period, there were also cancer awareness talks on radio and TV. The Periwinkle Day Celebration was jointly organised by MAKNA, Menara Kuala Lumpur and Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad. Nagase, with the support of Gribbles Lab also conducted a campaign on colorectal cancer.

Periwinkle Celebration Day 2004 The year 2004 marked a double celebration for MAKNA. Besides its 10th Anniversary and dinner, MAKNA launched its 8th Periwinkle Celebration with a variety of cancer awareness activities. Activities included exhibitions at a number of vicinities, talk shows, cancer screening and distribution of educational materials on cancer. Activities on the day of the launch included a tour for cancer patients at Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad depot facility at lapangan Terbang Subang. Thereafter a convoy consisting of Vintage cars, Porsche cars and Harley Davidson Bikes ferried cancer children and cancer survivors from the depot via Subang, the Federal Highway, and Merdeka Square. On reaching Masjid Jamek LRT station, six cancer survivors undertook the run of hope bearing the torch of hope from Masjid Jamek to Menara KL. The launch of Periwinkle Celebration took place at Menara KL with Para jumpers jumping off the tower. The regular activities such as lighting up of the KL Tower in purple and the significant and meaningful lighting of Candle of Hope at the Cascading Pool then took place. A breast cancer survivor, Ms Cindy 44, who had “Ductus Carcinoma Stage 1”, spoke of her experience and challenges in dealing with cancer. Two pop divas also graced the event. They were Ning Baizura who is the Ambassador for PDC 2004, Dia Fadilla as guest singer and performance by DanceSteps Studio dancers.

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES Fundraising brings in the financial support necessary to sustain and promote MAKNA’s cause. MAKNA’s fundraising programmes are carried out in various ways, offering individuals and corporations an innovative and exciting range of options through which they can contribute to help financially challenged cancer patients. Many corporations have partnered with MAKNA with the aim of working together to raise funds for a good cause. This in turn has helped both MAKNA and its partners to be seen in public as corporate fundraisers and has thus further enhanced the company’s value, corporate culture and public awareness. This has also opened gateways to new fundraising opportunities. Individuals on the other hand, support us by generously contributing to our home-grown projects such as Direct Debit Donor Programme (DDDP), Direct Mail, Payroll Giving, One Sen Campaign and Donation Box Campaign. Other joint venture projects also received overwhelming feedback from the general public as well. Without adequate funding, MAKNA would not be able to carry out its objective and mission to help those in need. These funds are disbursed to many areas of MAKNA’s work. Some of which are used for undertaking awareness and educational activities, most of which are the home-grown fundraising projects, administrative/operational, cost of the drugs and treatments for patients, cancer researches and Bursary programmes.

DIRECT DEBIT DONOR PROGRAMME Since its launch in August 2002, DDDP has shown encouraging response in recruiting new donors and providing residual income for MAKNA. As at December 2003, 28,377 donors were donating to MAKNA and as at December 2004, there were 60,820 donors. DDDP is actively recruiting promising donors in Malaysia. DDDP is a collaborative fundraising effort between MAKNA, Support Direct and Sharity Greetings.

PAYROLL GIVING As at 2003, there were 17 corporations involved in the campaign. They included UMW with 16 subsidiaries, MRCB, Southern Finance Berhad (UMF), EON Berhad, CSR Building Material, Ansell Berhad, Securities Commission, RHB Berhad, Remedi Pharmaceuticals, Bank Islam, Progressive Insurance, Sharity Greetings, Bank Pertanian, SPNB, Tahan Insurance, CELCOM and Island & Peninsular. In addition, there were 5 statutory bodies namely Majlis Sumber Manusia & Pembangunan, PERKESO, FELDA, LHDN and Lembaga Penduduk & Pembangunan Keluarga. Government bodies that have participated included Ministry of Finance, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Jabatan Pendaftaran Negeri Sembilan, Jabatan Pendaftaran Negeri Perak, Kementerian Sumber Manusia, Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam and Jabatan Perdana Menteri. For the duration of January until December 2003, a total sum of RM76,638.00 has been collected through this project. Meanwhile, for the period of January to December 2004, an amount of RM69,162 has been received.

DIRECT MAIL – Individual (Cold Mail) A total of 20,000 appeal letters were sent out at the end of June 2003 for individual direct mail (cold mail). The database was selected from various popular categories from a database vendor. As at 31 December 2003, a total of RM218,446 has been collected from 380 donors. The highest contributor was a donor who donated RM10, 000. Meanwhile, Direct Mail with Visa International is an ongoing project with recurring donors that started in year 2000. As of January until December 2003, MAKNA has received a total sum of RM2,997.00. A total sum of RM308,175 has been collected in year 2004 for both Direct Mail projects.

MAKNA – MAS LOOSE CHANGE A major counting session was held on 23 June 2003 involving some 40 cadets from the Malaysian Military Academy at the Sungei Besi Camp. This brings the total amount counted in 2003 to RM74, 843.00. Since the project started in 1997 until 2003, more than RM963,864.00 has been collected, of which 30% or RM289,159.00 was allocated to the Malaysian Airlines children fund. An amount of RM23,112.00 has been counted in year 2004. The project has since ceased. MAKNA will be approaching MAS again for a possibility of resuming the project.

ONE SEN CAMPAIGN The “One-Sen Campaign 2003” was a project initiated by MAKNA from February until April 2003 in primary schools throughout the nation where primary school children on their own initiatives took on to collect as many 1 sen coins as they can. The uniqueness of this campaign is that children do not need to collect the 1 sen from the public. They simply collected them from their own possession and also from their parents and relatives. It further reflected the compassionate trait among the school children towards helping the less fortunate and poor. A ceremony was held at the Ministry of Education’s premise in Pusat Damansara on 28 August 2003, during which the Director General of the School Division, Ministry of Education, Dato’ Haji Kusaini bin Haji Hasbullah handed over a mocked cheque for RM230,590.00 being the total amount collected during the one-sen campaign to MAKNA’s President Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin. The event was also attended by cancer children from University Malaya’s Medical Centre and schoolchildren from selected schools in the Klang Valley. According to Dato’ Haji Kusaini, this is their first of such collaboration ever between the Ministry of Education and a not-for-profit organization to assist cancer patients. It also paved the way to educate children about cancer and how they can show their compassion by helping other kids suffering from cancer and cultivate value of helping and giving. The campaign received overwhelming response from most of the primary schools in Malaysia. Parents too showed their support by giving away any 1 sen loose change they have to their children to bring to schools for this campaign. This has prompted the Ministry to continue the campaign for 2004, this time to include secondary schools. The “One Sen Campaign 2004” was carried out for six months from Mac to August 2004 in secondary schools throughout Malaysia. A total amount of RM124,089.00 was collected during the campaign.

DONATION BOX CAMPAIGN Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad A donation box campaign was launched by popular singer Dayang Nurfaizah in the presence of 20 cancer patients on 19 June, 2003 held at the PWTC STAR LRT station. This major campaign comprises of installation of donation boxes at all 24 STAR LRT stations and 23 PUTRA LRT stations. The collection from the stations has been carried out by MAKNA staff. More than RM34,381.08 has been collected since August 2003 until July 2004. Maju Curry House It is a donation box drive initiated by Maju Curry House where about 20 donation boxes were placed at their respective branches. An amount of RM1,754.63 has been received.

TELEKANSER 2003 MAKNA officially launched its annual fundraising campaign, Telekanser 2003, to raise funds for cancer treatment and cancer research. The nationwide campaign began on 23 October 2003 and ended on 31 December 2003. The campaign managed to raise RM221,443.00 throughout the duration of the campaign. Telekanser 2003 was a charity project that aspires to raise funds through Short Message Servce (SMS) to help financially challenged cancer patients in Malaysia. The general public were encouraged to donate by sending an SMS by typing MAKNA and sending it to 32202 and 30 cents is channelled to MAKNA. Through this campaign MAKNA was able to raise cancer awareness among Malaysians and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, via all media. Seven cancer survivors aged between 8 – 16 years old were given the honour to officiate the launch. They were Nazatul Syuhada Hassan, Siti Hajar Syafiqah Othman, Siti Nur Fairuz, Mohd Shaukani Mohd Taha, Farah Farhana Mohd Azmi, Fauzan Basir and Law Siew Sunn. MAKNA’s EXCO and BOT, corporate partners, friends and volunteers were present to witness the significant ceremony. Telekanser 2003, was organized by MAKNA and supported by MAKNA’s partners which included Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Malaysian National Re Insurance Berhad, Channel 9, Foot, Cone & Belding Sdn Bhd (FCB), Airtime Management & Programming Sdn Bhd (AMP), UPD, Dayacom, Asia Pacific Video Labs, IRIDEA, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB), Inkjet Images and MEPS – IBG.

CHIEF MINISTER’S WIFE - CHARITY DINNER AND CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN IN TERENGGANU In its mission to provide curative and preventive services to a wider selection of the population, MAKNA organised a Charity and Cancer Awareness Programme in Terengganu from 20 – 21 September 2003. The Charity Dinner held on September 20, 2003 at Primula Beach Resort, Kuala Terengganu was hosted by the Khairunnisa’ (Persatuan Isteri-isteri Wakil Rakyat Terengganu) with the co-operation of Majlis Kebajikan Sosial & Kesihatan (MKSK) Terengganu and MAKNA. The dinner was held for a good cause as the money collected was channelled to three organizations, Khairunnisa’, MKSK and MAKNA. The Chief Minister of Terengganu was presented by Ustaz Haji Abu Bakar Abdullah, as the guest of honour. Eighty tables were sold for the night. Cancer children from MAKNA’s Bursary recipients were also invited to the dinner for a mock cheque presentation. The charity dinner was a great success and managed to raise a total of RM90,807, excluding the RM2,600 received from the diners’ spontaneous donation. A state-level cancer awareness campaign was held at Dewan Sri Iman, Kuala Terengganu on the following day. The Sultanah of Terengganu, Her Royal Highness Permaisuri Nur Zahirah graced the occasion and officially launched the cancer awareness programme and visited the exhibition booth. A health talk was presented by MAKNA’s President, Dato’ Mohd Farid Ariffin on cancer and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Several donations boxes were passed around for spontaneous donations from the crowd where almost RM1,300.00 was collected.

THE LANGKAWI STRAITS SWIM CHALLENGE The Langkawi solo swim challenge took place on 24 May 2003 at the Kuala Perlis Jetty. MAKNA was chosen as the beneficiary of the charity funds raise for this outstanding event. The individual who took on this challenge is non other than our young Malaysian swimmer, Abdul Malik Mydin who attempted this daring feat by swimming solo and without any aid from the Kuala Perlis Jetty to Dataran Lang, Langkawi Island covering a distance of 48km in approximately 20 hours. The Langkawi challenge was launched by former Prime Minister, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at the Kuala Perlis Jetty, and witnessed by hundreds of Malaysians. The receiving ceremony was held on the following day at Dataran Lang, Pulau Langkawi. The former Prime Minister and Malik then witnessed the cheques presentation from various companies to MAKNA. Dato’ Farid and four cancer patients received the cheques on behalf of MAKNA. They were NAZA Motor Trading Sdn Bhd (RM50,000), Commerce Asset Holdings (RM50,000), Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad (RM3,000), PROTON (RM1,000), Kerajaan Negeri Kedah (RM10,000), Shorubber (M) Sdn Bhd (RM2,000) and Taliworks Corporation Bhd (RM6,000). MAKNA extends its appreciation and heartfelt thanks to all donors and sponsors who were involved in the event, and they include the NAZA Group of Companies, Commerce Asset Holdings, Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad, Shorubber (M) Sdn Bhd, Air Asia Sdn Bhd, Kuala Perlis Seaview Hotel, Sheraton Perdana Resort Langkawi, PROTON, ConvoTec, Kerajaan Negeri Kedah Darul Aman, Kerajaan Negeri Perlis Indera Kayangan, United Ferry Ventures Sdn Bhd and Kementerian Belia dan Sukan Malaysia.

MAKNA CROSS NATION RUN 2004 The objective of the run is to raise awareness of cancer among Malaysians, to send a message of hope across the nation for cancer patients and at the same time to raise funds for financially challenged cancer patients. The runner is non other than the Malaysian long-distance runner and sportswoman, Suwaibah Muhammad Nasir who was officially declared by the Malaysian Book of Records as the First Malaysian woman to run 2004km across Peninsular Malaysian within 47 days upon completing her run in October 7, 2004. The event was officially launched on June 15 by its Patron, Y.A.Bhg Datin Sri Dr. Dato’ Rosmah Mansor while the flagged off ceremony was held on August 22 at Menara KL. Throughout the 47 days, activities such as health talks and exhibitions on cancer were held at various venues along the route taken by Suwaibah. Charity functions and welcome ceremonies were organised by state governments. Similar functions were held at several hotels in various states to raise funds for MAKNA. MAKNA managed to raised an amount of RM139,228.00 from this outstanding event. Special thanks to the Royal Highness Raja Perempuan Kelantan and the Patron, Y.A.Bhg Datin Sri Dr. Dato’ Rosmah Mansor for their kind support and everyone who has supported and contributed to this event. Launch of Home Grown Projects WILLS & TRUST – “Giving Hope for the Future through your Will” Wills & Trust, a MAKNA home grown project was officially launched on February 28, 2004. It was launched at the beautiful ambience of Prestavest Memorial Park in Taiping, Perak by State EXCO, YB Dato’ Ho Cheng Wang. The launch was a great success with the support from the management of Prestavest Memorial Park. The launch was also graced with the presence of children undergoing cancer treatment at Penang General Hospital & Integrated Will Services, one of MAKNA’s Will Writing Partners. Wills & Trust is a programme that gives Hope for the future through one’s Will, a Will that goes on serving the poor cancer patients even when you at rest. Your legacy or planned gift may include cash donations, gifts in kind (real estate), life assurance (cash value) or bequests under your will, which will contribute for future planning. The legacy left behind allows you to contribute to a charity in a manner that best suits your own particular needs. It may be a onetime donation, a series of donations over a set period, or on-going financial support. As of 31 December 2004, a total amount of RM43,500 has been raised.

MAKNA made Web Strategy possible The web strategy will be the vehicle by which MAKNA will use to extend its services to the pubic – particularly in the areas of cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. In line with MAKNA’s aspiration to “e” enable the nation’s fight against cancer, the web strategy was conceptualised to link members of the public with cancer patients in their time of need. MAKNA aims to create cancer awareness among online visitors as well as guide them towards living a healthy lifestyle. It will present a convenient and highly accessible channel to get in touch with MAKNA. By leveraging on the ubiquity of the Internet, members of the public can access to the info resources anytime and everywhere. The MAKNA web strategy also aims to cultivate and instil the positive habit of giving among the younger generation of Malaysian citizens via online donations. The implementation of the web strategy will create an additional channel to promote MAKNA’s role in charitable activities as well as bridge the gap for members of the public to get help and give help to cancer initiatives. MAKNA’s website was launched during the Periwinkle Day Celebration 2004 held at Menara KL. It was also held in conjunction with MAKNA’s 10th Anniversary. The MAKNA web strategy is the result of synergistic collaboration between MAKNA and Qinetics Solution.

Roadshows for awareness and fundraising Gastric and Stomach Cancer The Gastric Cancer Awareness Campaign 2003 kicked off in early August with a nationwide health talk in Ipoh, Johor Bharu, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. During the campaign, the general public is encouraged to undergo a finger prick test at a discounted rate of RM8.00. Part of the proceeds from the fund raised which amounted to RM23,500.00 was donated to MAKNA. We applaud the roles played by MSGH and AFP for their noble efforts in disseminating the information on gastric cancer to the general public.

Colon Cancer The campaign organized by Cotra Enterprises marks the venture of Vitagen with MAKNA and Pharmaniaga to impart important information on colon cancer leading to a healthier society. Besides Vitagen samples given to the public, a Vitagen/MAKNA mini golf challenge and colouring contest is held at several venues such as One Utama Shopping Centre, TESCO Puchong and TESCO Melaka. Pharmaniaga also conducts health screening tests on blood glucose for the public at only RM2. Proceeds from the test were channelled to the MAKNA charity fund. The highlight of the initial launch was a presentation on leading a healthy lifestyle by Dato’ Farid and a talk on the causes and symptoms of colon cancer, screening and preventive methods and also methods and treatment of colon cancer by a consultant physician and gastroenterologist Datuk S.T. Kew. A total amount of RM29,000 managed to be raised throughout the campaign.

Cancer Screening Campaign MAKNA together with Pathlab and Parkson launched its first major cancer awareness and screening campaign with a theme of “Early Detection Saves Lives” in August 2004. The cancer screening campaign entailed general health screening and cancer marker screening of various cancers. The objective of the cancer screening campaign was to help reduce the number of cases which is possible and encouraged the general public to have regular medical check that will benefit in their lifelong wellness. The cancer awareness and screening campaign was held at various PARKSON outlets throughout Malaysia as the official venue provider. PATHLAB has provided 2,000 complimentary cancer markers to the needy, underprivileged cancer patients and PARKSON visitors during the six-month screening campaign which was held from 5 August 2004 to 31 January 2005. The general health screen was also given at a special price of RM100 during the campaign instead of the normal price of RM180. A total of RM30,000 of the proceeds generated by PATHLAB from the screening campaign were donated to MAKNA.

Leogardo often dubbed as the Queen of Charity and founder of skincare company BML organized “Malam Suara Emas”, a charity dinner show dedicated to cancer on 11 April 2003 at Hotel Istana. It was a night of songs, stars, designers and famous people. At the end of it all, some RM237,105.00 was raised for MAKNA.

Lexmark launched a campaign whereby for every used/empty Lexmark cartridge returned by members of the public to Lexmark shops, RM0.50 will be donated to MAKNA. The sixmonth campaign was held from 13 July until 31 December 2003. A total of RM10,000.00 was raised. The cheque presentation ceremony was held on 22 April 2003 at MAKNA’s office.

The theatre was held on 30 May until 6 June at Saloma Bistro, Jalan Ampang. Warisan Seni Gemilang, the production house that organised this event has contributed 17% from each table sold to MAKNA. They managed to raise RM2,800.00.

JERNEH INSURANCE A new product under Jerneh was launched by Minister of Women Affairs and Family Development on 9 August 2003. The product is a policy for ladies that also cover cancers affecting ladies. Proceed of RM3 from every policy will be donated to MAKNA. RM417 has been raised from the project.

In conjunction with the Merdeka Celebration, Kelab Sukan Sunway of Sunway Group organized a month-long campaign with the Ministry of Tourism under “Perayaan Ambang” to promote tourism in Melaka on 14 August 2003. Various fundraising activities were held and for the year 2003, MAKNA was the beneficiary. RM 15,000 has been raised from the event.

Students of UiTM Dungun have organized a cancer awareness cum fundraising programme on 27 August 2003. The main purpose of the programme was to create awareness on cancer among the UiTM students and the public in Terengganu especially in Dungun. RM1,314 has been raised from the campaign. SPNB – CHARITY CAR WASH Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB), the parent company to PUTRA & STAR LRT together with MAKNA, supported by ERA radio station, TV3 comperes and local celebrities organized a charity car wash on 6 September 2003. The event was held at Ampang STAR LRT station from 8am –6pm and each car was charged RM10 to be washed. The purpose of the car wash was to create awareness on cancer and to raise funds for MAKNA. A month-long charity campaign was held by Guardian Pharmacy from July 1 until July 31 at their stores nationwide. For a donation of RM2, Guardian customers were given discount cards for which they can get discounts from among the 30 participating brands. Guardian raised RM160,000 from this campaign and the cheque presentation was held at Institut Kanser MAKNA-HUKM witnessed by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Health Ministry, Mr. S. Sothinathan. GODELL’S PARK FOR CHARITY Godell Parking formerly known as Swastapark Sdn Bhd kicked off its Park-For-Charity Month 2003 for the third successive year. The launch was held in Subang Jaya by MAKNA president, Dato’ Mohd farid Ariffin on the 21 October 2003. According to its parking operations acting chief operating officer, Wan Azli Wan Mohd Ali, 5% of the proceeds from the project would be collected and channelled to MAKNA and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). The Park-for-Charity Month ended on 20 November 2003. PUSAT ZAKAT SELANGOR An amount of RM30,000.00 was contributed by Pusat Zakat Selangor to MAKNA.

Community Contributions (January – December 2004) NEW VEHICLE TO POWER PROJECT On August 12, 2004 MAKNA received a major boost in its effort to raise awareness on cancer and raise funds when Competitive Supreme donated a Ssangyong Rexton RX270Xdi SUV, valued at RM170,000 for all its projects in years to come.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MATRICULATION (SAM) CHARITY PROGRAMMES Students Group SAM of Taylor’s College Subang Jaya organised a charity drive and donated to six charities on August 17, 2004. An amount of RM5,000.00 was donated to MAKNA.

STUDENT ACTION CLUB (STACT) CHARITY DRIVE 2004 STACT organised a series of activities during the charity drive that helped raised RM4,008.11. The charity drive was held over 5 days from February 9 – 13 with the theme “Towards a Caring Society” in conjunction of “Valentine’s day” celebration.

MALAKOFF MALAYSIAN DUATHLON SERIES 2004 This event organised by Malakoff Berhad, is a duathlon series which started with a run and ended with cycling. The event was held in Dataran Merdeka on 11 April 2004 which raised RM45,000.

MEDICAL CENTRE CONTRIBUTION IN DIRECT DEBIT DONOR PROGRAMME (DDDP) Pantai Cheras Medical Centre donated RM5000 to commemorate their 10th anniversary and presented five free health screening vouchers to DDDP donors. Five donors were randomly selected and awarded with the “Executive Screening Package” worth RM300 each.

RENEW EXPRESS SDN BHD Rnew Express Sdn Bhd (RE) is an Automobile Community Service organisation which provides all renewal services. RE program for motor insurance was set up to help private car owners to renew their road tax and insurance coverage in the most convenient and efficient way via 12 months instalment payment through Master Card with 0% interest and 20% savings in road tax. Effective April 2004, RE donated RM1 to MAKNA for renewal of each road tax made by RE.

UTP CONVO FAIR 2004 CHARITY DINNER The dinner was held on 7 August 2004 at the Silveritage Galleria Complex at Medan Gopeng, Ipoh to coincide with the 4th convocation of University Technology Petronas (UTP) Proceeds from the dinner amounted to RM3,000 was presented to MAKNA.

FEMALE GRADUATES CHARITY DINNER NIGHT A charity dinner was held on 8 October 2004 by the female graduates from Multimedia University, Cyberjaya at Residence Hotel. The charity dinner was held in conjunction with the Female Graduates Programme. An amount of RM1,020 was raised through the circulation of MAKNA’s donation box collected among the students and staffs.

RUN A MILE SAVE A LIFE A charity run was organised by the University of Monash on 8 October 2004 at the Sunway College. The run which started at 8pm was participated by students of the Monash University and also a few cancer survivors. A total amount of RM8,000 was raised through the registration of the Run and it was channelled to MAKNA. During the event two cancer survivors gave their speech which touched the hearts of those present.

PUSAT ZAKAT KL CONTRIBUTION The Zakat Centre of Wilayah Persekutuan contributed RM40,000 to MAKNA to help finance the treatment of Muslim cancer patients from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The cheque presentation was made by the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department, YB Dato’ Dr. Abdullah bin Mohd Zin on 12 October 2004 at the Grand Seasons Hotel.

AN EVENING WITH KRIS DAYANTI In conjunction with the Secretaries Week, Adverse Sdn Bhd has organized a performance by Indonesia’s number one singer, Kris Dayanti. It was held over two days from 13 to 14 April 2004 at Mutiara Hotel. Among the guests who graced the dinner show were YB Dato’ Shahrizat Jalil and YB Dato’ Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir. The event managed to raise RM10,000 for MAKNA.

AKADEMI SENI TARIAN SRI RAMPAI Akademi Seni Tarian Sri Rampai has organised a Ballet Charity Concert at Auditorium DBKL. A total of 230 performers participated and some of the performers were as young as three-years-old who started preparing for the concert 6 months before the event. A cheque of RM5,000 was then presented to MAKNA at the end of the concert.

PAHANG POLO CLUB CHARITY An amount of RM150,000 was raised for MAKNA through the selling of dinner tables in conjunction with a fashion show organised by the HRH Tengku Mahkota Pahang.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Bursary Programme The Bursary Scheme provides assistance for the following needs: Assisting cancer patients especially those who are unable to pay for treatment, medication, equipment and other relevant costs. Each application is vetted by the relevant public hospitals Medical Welfare Department before submission to MAKNA for assistance. Priority given to referrals from public hospitals only. To date, MAKNA is assisting patients from 30 government hospitals.  Provides emergency assistance in the form of petty cash allocation for public hospital namely HKL (RM3000), HUKM (RM500), Putrajaya (RM1000) and Sarawak Hospital (RM1000).  Building a core team of professionals and semi-professionals in various aspects of cancer through researches, trainings, seminars, study tours, fellowships and conferences. For the duration of January until December 2003, almost 153 patients have received financial assistance through this scheme which amounted to RM286,373.00. Since it first started in 1995 till year end 2004, a total sum of RM1,390,555.00 has been given to 692 patients.

SPECIAL REPORT - CANCER INCIDENCE IN MSIA Overall Cancer Incidence A total of 21,464 cancer cases were diagnosed among Malaysians in Peninsular Malaysia in the year 2003, comprising 9,400 males and 12,064 females. However, a total of 926 cancer cases were diagnosed in year 2003 for Sabah, comprising 428 males and 498 females. Meanwhile, 645 males and 711 females were diagnosed with cancer in Sarawak in year 2003. The National Cancer Registry received 42,985 cancer notifications of Malaysian residents in 2003 of which 23,746 were unique incident cancer cases. MAKNA allocates RM200,000.00 per year for the registry.

Variation in Cancer Incidence by Age, Sex and Ethnicity Cancer occurred at all ages. The median age at diagnosis for cancer in Malaysian males was 59 years and 53 years for Malaysian females. The most 5 frequent cancers in children (0–14 years old) were leukaemia, cancers of the brain, lymphoma, cancers of the connective tissue and kidney. In the group of young adults (15–49 years old), the common cancers were nasopharynx, leukaemia, lymphoma, lung, colon and rectum in men, and cancers of the breast, cervix, ovary, uterus, thyroid gland and leukaemia in women. In older subjects (50 years old and above), cancers of the lung, colon, rectum and nasopharynx, prostate and stomach were predominant among men, while cancers of the breast, cervix, colon, uterus, lung and rectum occurred commonly in women. The crude incidence rate of age groups by sex, showed an increasing trend of incidence with age. The crude incidence rate for males aged 0-19 years was 18.0 per 100,000 population; aged 20-39 years was 33.0 per 100,000; aged 40-59 years was 168.6 per 100,000 population and aged 60+ years was 731.8 per 100,000 population. The crude incidence rate for females aged 0-19 years was 14.0 per 100,000 population; aged 20-39 years was 54.8 per 100,000; aged 40-59 years was 40-59 years was 318.2 per 100,000 population and aged 60+ years was 591.1 per 100,000 population. There is variation of cancer incidence rate between the different ethnic groups. The crude incidence rate for cancers in Malay male and females were 60.6 and 79 per 100,000 population respectively; for Chinese male and females 169.2 and 217.7 per 100,000 population respectively; and for the Indian male and females 85.7 and 147.2 per 100,000 population respectively. DEVELOPMENTS SENS SAVES LIVES The objective of the project is to help poor cancer patients, to conduct cancer research and to enhance cancer awareness. It’s a home grown project supported by Bank Negara Malaysia for the purpose of bringing back the velocity of these coins – which we can do as a national service. MAKNA will be collecting loose change such as 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen through this nationwide campaign. Small, medium and giant donation boxes will be distributed and displayed at high traffic locations throughout the country. There is about 1.5 billion ringgit of coins supposedly in circulation. MAKNA plans a target of about 10% of the total sum in and out of circulation.

1 & 5 SEN CAMPAIGN The One Sen Campaign held in the year 2003 for primary schools and 2004 for secondary schools have clearly shown that the project has been successful. Due to that, the Ministry of Education has welcomed MAKNA to proceed with the campaign for the third consecutive year. For year 2005, the ministry has proposed MAKNA to collect 1 sen and 5 sen coins from both primary and secondary schools. This project will take off in July 2005 until December 2005.

MOBILE SCREENING The idea is to conduct a nationwide campaign for Mobile Cancer Screening for the early detection of pre-symptomatic cancer by deploying mobile units to strategic locations all over Malaysia from districts to cities, rural to urban dwellings. Only four kinds of cancer are targeted. They are Breast, Cervical, Prostate and Stomach Cancer. We are already in the planning stage. The target date to launch is in February or March 2006.

MICROCREDIT PROGRAMME MAKNA’s Microcredit Programme provides small, unsecured loans to cancer patients, survivors or cancer patient’s families to help them get back on their feet and out of the poverty vicious cycle. All financially challenged cancer patients and survivors who are able to work again or the family members of a patient who is still undergoing treatment are eligible. MAKNA chooses no colour, class and creed or political believes. Anybody who qualifies shall be helped.

Majlis Kanser Nasional (National Cancer Council) There were 417 individuals, 20 societies and 18 corporations who were members of MAKNA in year 2003. Meanwhile in year 2004, there were 425 individuals, 20 societies and 18 corporations. Each member was sent a copy of MAKNA’s newsletter.

VOLUNTEERISM Volunteering is about connecting with the community. Volunteers at MAKNA have volunteered their time for various activities namely sorting coins, administrative work, charity car wash etc. There are almost 600 registered volunteers with MAKNA. Future programmes with the volunteers are to reach out volunteer service and expertise in helping the patients. This includes personal home visits. With the development of the volunteer wing we will be able to reach closer to the community and hope to improve their quality of life. MAKNA is striving to build a better and stronger community.

CONTINUOUS EDUCATION 5TH International Workshop on Resource Mobilisation (IWRM) The 5th IWRM was organised by the Resource Alliance in Johannesburg, South Africa from 26–28 March 2004. The programme consisted interactive discussion forums to participants with the opportunity to explore ideas, case studies and best practice in resource mobilisation. The forum was facilitated by experienced practitioners in non-for-profit organisation like Simon Collings, CEO of Resource Alliance, Mal Warwick founder of Mal Warwick & Associates, a fundraising consultancy in Berkeley, California and many other experienced practitioners. Ms Malar Selvi and Mr Vemanna from project division represented MAKNA at this workshop.

American Cancer Society University (ACSU) ACSU has organised a regional training on “Relay for Life” in Taipei, Taiwan from 2426 May, 2004. The ACSU training was made possible with the support of the Pfizer Foundation and was fully sponsored. “Relay for Life” (RFL) a large cancer control event in the world provides an opportunity to share valuable information about cancer prevention , early detection, patients and other services available through any cancer related organisation. The ACSU, Taipeh provided information of planning for Relay for Life in other countries. Training was organised by National Cancer Society Penang (NCSP) on 31 July 2004. Mr Francis Tan, MAKNA’s Honorary Treasurer attended the training in Taipeh while Ms. Tan Loo Soo and Mr Vemanna attended the training held in Penang.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY The summarized Income and Expenditure Account and Balance Sheet have been extracted for MAKNA for the year ended 31 December 2004. MAKNA’s total income for the year was RM15.37 million. Of this amount, the bulk came from fund raising activities of RM12.91 million. During the year we also received donations, membership fees and annual subscription to the amount of RM0.82 million. Fixed deposit interest and dividend received from investments generated another RM0.98 million. Write back of provision for diminution in value of investment generated another RM0.67 million. MAKNA’s total expenditure for the year ended 31st December 2004 was RM9.01 million. Main reasons for the increase in the expenditure were increase in salaries and related costs at RM2.28 million due to increase in number of staff, payment made for the consumables, cleaning and utilities of the Institute amounting to RM0.30 million, increase in depreciation of property, plant and equipment at RM0.34 million, increase in activities costs at RM4.82 million and increase in donations paid through bursary programme at RM0.67 million. This also incorporated expenses such as administrative costs at RM0.50 million and scholarship granted at RM0.11 million. MAKNA’s total net income for the year 2004 was therefore RM6.36 million. We are mindful that people who support our fundraising campaigns are hopeful that their contributions are put to good use and channelled towards the development of the Institute. We are also aware that the donations received have been due to the contributions and support given by our members, volunteers, corporate sector, government bodies and other non-for-profit organizations. CONSTITUTION Majlis Kanser Nasional (“MAKNA�) was registered on 10 November 1994 and officially launched on 30 March 1995 and was approved by the Department of Inland Revenue for the purposes of Section 44(6) of the Income Tax Act, 1967. The objectives of Majlis Kanser Nasional are to work towards the attainment of better health care system for all Malaysians especially in terms of prevention and control of cancer; to develop and formulate policies for cancer prevention and intervention; to strengthen and generate services and programmes on cancer and to strengthen support services for cancer patients and affected persons. MAKNA has 83 (2002:90) employees at the end of the financial year. The Address of the principal place of activity is as follows: No. 26-3 Taman Setiawangsa Jalan 10/55A 54200 Kuala Lumpur.

SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (a)

Basis of accounting The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention in accordance with the MASB approved accounting standards in Malaysia.

(b)

Property, plant and equipment Property, plant and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Property, plant and equipment are depreciated on a straight line basis at rates to write-off the cost of each asset over its expected useful life. Property, plant and equipment received on donation are not capitalised. Capital work-in progress is stated at cost and not depreciated. At each balance sheet date, an assessment is made for any indication of impairment. If such indications exist, an analysis is performed to assess whether the carrying amount of the asset is fully recoverable. A write down is made if the carrying amount exceeds the recoverable amount. See accounting policy Note 2 (e) on impairment of assets.

Income and expenditure

(d)

Income is recognised on a receipt basis except for interest income of which is recognised on an accrual basis. Expenditure is recognised on an accrual basis. Investments Investments are stated at lower of cost or market value on an aggregate portfolio basis. Increases/decreases in the carrying amount of investments are credited/charged to the statement of income and expenditure. On disposal of an investment, the difference between the net disposal proceeds and its carrying amount is charged or credited to the statement of income and expenditure.

Impairment of assets Property, plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment losses whenever e ents or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. Impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the carrying amount of the asset exceeds its recoverable amount. The recoverable amount is the higher of an asset’s net selling price and value in use. For the purpose of assessing impairment, assets are grouped at the lowest level for which there is separately identifiable cash flows. The impairment loss is charged to the statement of income and expenditure and any subsequent increase is recognised in the statement of income and expenditure.

(f)

Financial Instruments A financial instrument is any contract that gives rise to both a financial asset of one enterprise and a financial liability or equity instrument of another enterprise. A financial asset is any asset that is cash, a contractual right to receive cash or another financial asset from another enterprise, a contractual right to exchange financial instruments with another enterprise under conditions that are potentially favourable, or an equity instrument of another enterprise. A financial liability is any liability that is a contractual obligation to deliver cash or another financial asset to another enterprise, or to exchange financial instruments with another enterprise under conditions that are potentially unfavourable. The particular recognition method adopted for financial instruments recognised on statement of assets, liabilities and fund balances are disclosed in the individual accounting policy note associated with each item.

Fair values The face values of financial assets (less any estimated credit adjustments) and financial liabilities with a maturity period of less than one year are assumed to approximate their face values.

SCHOLARSHIP GRANTED Included in scholarship granted is an amount of RM Nil (2002: RM 15,326) for sponsorship to a MAKNA Project Executive to do a Ph.D. programme at the Imperial College, University of London (St. Mary’s Hospital). The Project Executive is bonded with MAKNA for a period of 7 to 10 years after completing his study.
