Outdoor Trails and Nature Activities
Inspiring Loppi Nature The outdoor trails around Loppi take the traveller into the majestic nature of the Tavastia’s lake uplands. There are nearly 100 kilometres of marked trails. Loppi region is adorned by water courses of over 300 lakes and ponds within the vast forested landscape. Dry lingonberry plant-covered heathland ridges and rising water springs surrounded by fern groves can also be discovered in this region. The Poronpolku-event is organised for the last Sunday of September and joins local walking paths and bike trails for a total distance of 30 kilometres. The rambling day is one of the most popular ‘close to nature’ fitness events in Southern Finland. At its best the event attracts over 2000 people onto the autumnal trails. The Poronpolku trail can be used at other times besides the event day but will not have the deep water crossing facility provided. The trail system is marked with signposts and stamped signs. The Loppi municipality is a member of the Association of Häme Recreational Areas. The Association coordinates the maintenance and the development of the region’s outdoor trails. In addition to the traditional nature trails, there are opportunities for flying a glider at Räyskälä Sports Aviation Centre, rally driving, Enduro bike riding or even driving a tank! The lakes in Loppi offer great opportunities for paddle boarding and fishing. Here you can experience nature on land, on water and even up in the air! Fishing permits can be purchased from this website: www.kalastusalue.fi. There are plenty of horse related activities such as traditional horse riding and harness trotting, activities with Islandic horses and ponies and cowboy -style cattle herding rides.

Symbolic plant The potato is a symbolic plant for Loppi. The potato is an identifying crop plant for the municipality for which Loppi is recognised throughout Finland. The Ice Age formed the Loppi soil favourably for potato growing. Its cultivation started in the 1770s.
Symbolic Bird The Loppi symbolic bird is the Arctic loon. The loon is a stately and a sizeable bird, which lives by the large clear watered lakes. The Arctic loon represents the Loppi municipality’s endeavours to take care of its lakelands and of all the environment as thoroughly as possible. The Loppi municipal council chose the Loppi symbols on 1.6.1998.
The Punelia canoe route is located in western Loppi and is approx. 10 km long. The route meanders on the Pikku-Punelia and Punelia lakes. Boat launching sites can be found at Takala (Takalantie 153) and the Punelia dam (Jokitie 228). Leaving Takala towards the south, the route takes you past the Isosuntti lean-to shelter, from there via the southern Selkäsaari shelter to the Punelia lake and the Punelia dam, where there is a boat landing point and where the guided route ends. The waterways continue towards south to Karkkila, but due to the shallow rapids, it will require the canoeists to be experienced and competent. During windy weather the lake stretches can be challenging, then it is advisable to paddle near the shore. During dry seasons, the water level can be low, which in turn can make canoeing a bit more difficult in some river stretches. The route in total takes about 8 hours. The Pulelia lake canoe route goes by the Suntinniemi shelter and campfire site, Isusuntti. Another near-by rest area is at Pilkutin.

Mountain biking The Poronpolku route consists of varying lengths of mountain biking trails. The 5 km long Melkutin trail is an easy bike ride. The longest trails are in parts challenging due to the variable terrain. Some stretches of the trail follow forest roads, and to get onto the longest trails, you need to ride on a main road for a few kilometres, but the return route follows the Häme Ilvesreitti trail. Pirunkallio or Luutasuo parking areas are the recommended starting points. Rest points are at the Pilkutin shelter and the Luutasuo campfire site. Overnight stay is possible at Loppi Erähuvila, Räyskälä Suuri Huvila (Räyskäkä Grand Villa), Räyskälä Airfield motel and nearby holiday cottages (huvila.net). From Pirunkallio, it is a couple of kilometres to the Räyskälä village store (Räyskäläntie 481). Trails: 5 km, 13 km, 18 km, 24 km, 30 km and 55 km. The other outdoor trails are also for the use of mountain bikers. Trail maps www.jalki.fi/paikkakunnat/Loppi
Pikkupässi bike trail The Pikkupässi bike trail is 51 km long and it follows the old railtrack, which was built in the beginning of the 1900s between Hyvinkää and Karkkila. The trail runs in places on the embankment of the old railroad. The trail surface is gravelled in parts and can be ridden on an ordinary bicycle. This is a marked bike trail. The trail travels through varying rural landscapes, sometimes on the main road and other times on the bank of the old railroad. The trail, as well as the railroad embankment, run through Läyliäinen village. There are information boards at the old railway terminus and at the minor stations: Kytäjä, Linnamäki, Läyliäinen, Vaskijärvi and Hunsala, telling about the history of the railroad and of other areas along the railroad. A narrow-gauge railway was built in 1907 linking Hyvinkää and Kytäjä and the track was extended to reach Karkkila in 1911. The railroad was in use for 60 years until 1967. The locomotives, which pulled, and sometimes pushed the carriages, were called Pikkupässi, Little Rams.
