Expo gives small businesses a voice
FlashBack: Pan in de City 2016 CUC’S Pan in de City – the annual steel pan competition - kicked off the of�icial Pirates Week celebrations on Thursday 10 November. George Town waterfront had been cleared of all traf�ic, and it was the time that so many in the crowds – both behind the bands and in front – had been waiting for. The standard of the bands gets better each year, ever since Earl La Pierre brought the art of Steel Pan playing all the way from its home in Trinidad several decades ago, and has been teaching it to Cayman’s youth ever since. Pan People – the of�icial band of the UCCI had some tough competition in the Open category: Pan n Riddim weren’t just another steel pan band – they were a tribe – and they had come dressed in war paint. The music swirled. Deep bass and tenor pans throbbed, and the lead pans’ music twisted and arose in the air like a huge, glittering serpent.
