T
A Brief History of “The Bellmores”
he community of Bellmore, located on the South Shore of Long Island, is minutes from the great expanse of beaches that summer recreational playgrounds for hundreds of thousands. The community first took hold in 1676 – settled first by the Dutch from Amsterdam and the Quakers from New England–with the transfer of more than 100 acres of land by John Smith, an original Hempstead settler, to his son, Jeremiah. The resulting farming community was called Little Neck until 1818, when a bridge was built to enable Merrick Road to span a creek. At that important juncture, the community living along Merrick Road–which was where early settler growth was taking place–was renamed New Bridge. When the railroad arrived in 1867, it called the station built at the New Bridge community Bellmore instead, even though the surrounding community maintained the name of New Bridge. Early anecdotes for the Bellmore name include a train conductor ringing the train’s bell more to signal a hello to his girlfriend, to the need to ring the bell more to keep cattle off the tracks. Whatever the reason, between 1870 and 1880, as businesses sprouted around the station, more settlers began to call the community Bellmore. The name finally stuck and became official in 1883 when the first post office was established with the name Bellmore in the general store near the station.
Meanwhile, what is now North Bellmore was initially called Smithville in the 1850s, because many Smiths lived within the surroundings. In 1867, when residents petitioned for a Smithville post office at that location, the state government refused, notifying the residents that there was already a Smithville in upstate New York. But it did approve of the name Smithville South, a name that lasted until 1920 when the post office was renamed North Bellmore. With the arrival of the railroad, the Bellmore area experienced the first of several spurts of growth. At the turn of the century (1900s), large tracts of farm land in the Smithville South area were subdivided for housing. Next, the construction of Sunrise Highway in the 1920s brought more settlers, and then a housing boom after World War II bought the biggest population boom of all. The late actor George Kennedy, a native of Bellmore, acted as honorary chairman of the community’s Tri-centennial in 1976. In the late 1800s, the Bellmore Firehouse operated at the corner of Pettit and Bedford Avenues, followed in the early 1900s by Golder’s Drug Story occupying the same space. In 1903, the Worth House Hotel opened to accommodate sportsmen from afar to enjoy fishing and hunting in the area. In 1921 Weinman’s Hardware store opened its doors, though it was originally located on the east side of Bedford Avenue. Weinman’s quickly earned a reputation

for giving personal and friendly service to its customers which included farmers from Levittown and baymen from the south. The store expanded into a larger storefront on the west side of the avenue in 1935. After decades of serving the communities, Roy Weinman retired and closed the beloved community hardware store in 2015. In addition to Weinman’s, other establishments opened and flourished in the main part of town, including Cohen’s Department & Drug Store, which once stood on the corner of Frederick and Bedford Avenues. Indeed, the original town Tavern, which changed its name to The Bulldog Arms before becoming Mc Brides, still stands today. Early traditions were part of the development of the Bellmores. Early Thanksgiving, for example, was punctuated by children going from house to house and singing out “Anything for Thanksgiving?” at its doors. Foods such as nuts, fruits, cookies and pennies from homeowners were placed in pillow sacks held by children who dressed in late fall outfits such as ragamuffins. This tradition
was phased out in the 1950s in favor of the costumes of Halloween.
A sumptuous Thanksgiving Day dinner was held yearly at the famed Black Swann Inn, located on South Oyster Bay Turnpike (now Merrick Road), thought to have been somewhere between present-day Bellmore Avenue and Center Avenue, “where the banks are now.” Stringing Christmas lights across Bedford Avenue began at least in the

7 mid-40s, after the war, as an association that had developed for merchants– the Bellmore Merchants Association, precursor to the Chamber of Commerce – banded together to make the lightings annual events. It became an annual extravaganza to also light a large evergreen tree within the town, in further recognition. The Menorah lighting, while a deep tradition in Jewish homes, emerged into a public celebration when the country embraced the notion that all religious expression should be collective and presented together in the spirit of inclusion within the town, and laws were passed to ensure public inclusion. Whether as Christmas, Hanukkah or Winter Solstice, it is a season that celebrates the many manifestations and re-emergences of light – for all to see. Nor did early tradition include colorful glittering and blinking lights strung on residential homes. Homes were unassuming, with no lights on the outside–except on a few fir trees, and no red Santas on rooftops. There were no rein- [CONT. ON PAGE 8]

8 deer songs, no shopping catalogs. Perhaps even few decorated Christmas trees. Residents such as Charles Stevens and his son Stanley Stevens lived and prospered in the early development of the Bellmores, helping put the Bellmores on the map – as did perhaps Bellmore’s first entrepreneur, Charles Frisch. While Frisch–who has streets named in his honor–now has his original house on Martin Avenue landmarked by the Town of Hempstead, he was known for also building the Clarkson Hotel in Smithville South and several bungalows at High Hill Beach, on the eastern flank of what is known now as Zachs Bay. Documents indicate he was friends with R.T Wilmarth, another entrepreneur who developed a casino at High Hill Beach and a ferry service from southern Bellmore, which
would ferry Clarkson Hotel guests out from New York City for a weekend at High Hill beach – and perhaps stay at a High Hill Beach bungalow built by Frisch. Charles Stevens also was documented as operating a ferry service to High Hill Beach, and married Pauline Anne, manager of The Breakers Hotel at High Hill Beach. Together they built a vernacular style bungalow on Bellmore Avenue in the 1920s that became home to their son Stanley and his wife Lucy– once Charles built another house on Eastern Avenue. As a bay man, Stanley developed a tugboat service in Bellmore that ferried supplies that helped build the Robert Moses Causeway and span, for example, and the Wantagh Parkway and the Jones Beach water tower. Bellmore for decades was the hub

Bellmore Car Show the Gem of the South Shore
A
mong many recent historical achievements in Bellmore is the first car show, which began in 1999 at the same Long Island Rail Road parking location it is presently in. It was then called the Friday Night Cruisers, a private car club that had begun four years earlier as a traveling car show that experienced success whichever town it landed in – including Bellmore. And … it was operated by local residents. Downtown Bellmore was also promoting its new image as a “restored village” during those years, renaming Bedford Avenue as Bellmore Village, for example. It was among the first towns in Nassau County to put oldstyle street lighting in, add benches and pavers, and restore several storefronts to reflect an earlier era. Conventional thought soon developed to “have a stroll down memory lane and see what it was like to live in an earlier era.” And the new car show, with its antique and hotrod cars, and its rumble seats, fit that compelling image to perfection. Town permits were issued for the car show, and the Friday Night Car Show in Bellmore soon became a destination for car enthusiasts of every description – from all over the East! It became
tique cars and hot rods continued to dominate the empty parking lot spaces on Friday nights in the same lot. Once again, the Nassau police approached the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores to ask if something could be done to manage the gatherings of cars on Friday nights, as they were sometimes disruptive of commuters coming home from the LIRR on those nights. Plans were spawned, and chamber officials once more approached The Friday Night Car Show is every Friday night from Hempstead Town officials to see if 6-10pm until October 6, 2017 weather permitting. the chamber, in association with the town, might be able to start a new one of the Top 10 car shows in the nation, ac- car show at the same lot – only this time with cording to a popular car magazine. control over cars that come, where reAlthough its growth also became its de- strooms would be located, how long the cars mise, as it grew to take up several more LIRR could stay, guaranteed cleanup after the lots, leading Nassau County police to require show, and to provide assistance to commutmore skillful control management of the car ers to safely leave the lots once returning show – if it was to continue. Story Corps Project Will Maintain Posterity of the Bellmores for Future Generations ◆ DOUGLAS FINLAY
T
he Bellmore Memorial Library has created groundbreaking local historical content over the past several years using digital audio recordings to inscribe Bellmore’s past and its people in the hope of placing them in posterity for perhaps centuries to come. StoryCorps, through the American Library Association, provided the library with state-of-the-art digital audio equipment through a $2500 grant written by archival librarian Martha DiVittorio. The project is designed to record the stories of many of Bellmore’s earliest residents, often revealing intimate details and totally unexpected responses and discoveries from those residents who agreed to be interviewed for the series. StoryCorps is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide residents of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, preserve and share the stories of their lives. As one of the first 10 libraries in the nation to receive the grant, the proposal fo-
cused on two distinct aspects. One aspect was to record the recollections of the historical Bellmore. “There is a rich history here, yet the people who know it most intimately are moving away to Florida and other places, and taking that knowledge with them,” DiVittorio remarked. A second, more facile reason for the StoryCorps grant was the experience of superstorm Sandy and the impact it had on the residents of the community. Residents had experienced events that changed their lives– including losing their material possessions, and were perhaps anxious to record what they saw and felt during that “perfect storm.” Jack Skelly interviewed Roy Weinman, for example. Weinman closed his Weinman Hardware after more than 80 years on Bedford Avenue. His father was one of the founders of the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce. A son called for three days to get his 96-year-old mother to come in to talk about her life in Bellmore. She spoke of voting for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and of how she so thoroughly enjoyed the day when she was 10 and went out on a day’s outing with her father to see Charles Lindbergh take off on

his solo journey across the Atlantic from Roosevelt Field. Still another resident came in to speak of how her life has been turned upside down by superstorm Sandy. “She is a strong, resourceful, self-sufficient woman who was impressed by the actions of all her neighbors and whose son came to help her during this time,” DiVittorio said. What the mother discovered during the interview was that her son had been such a significant part in her life in helping her to do the things she had been able to do, more so than her other children. The interviews are recorded onto a disk, which is then given to the participants as well as sent and preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions have listened to such stories as broadcast over National Public Radio’s Morning Edition – and at www.storycorps.org. To see how you can be recorded to be part of Bellmore’s historical past call the library at 785-2990. Or stop in at 2288 Bedford Avenue.

Sharing History of the Bellmores
Y
ou too can share in the growing history of the Bellmores by participating in historical quarterly meetings at the Bellmore Memorial Library. Bring your historical memorabilia to share for all to see. Lively discussions at meetings help identify historical photos, documents, artifacts and people throughout the communities to give them a proper place in the history of the Bellmores. What’s more, you can keep the personal documents and memorabilia you share with the library, because they will remain in your possession. The library features cutting-edge technology to enable scanning of documents that provide authenticity while you maintain ownership throughout the entire recording process. You become an active participant developing the Bellmore’s history of tomorrow. Contributing memorabilia to the collection will help to ensure —
and continue to — document the unfolding history of the Bellmores for future generations to come. After the Bellmore Historical Society dissolved itself on December 31, 2014 quarterly historical meetings at the Bellmore Memorial Library revived the vigor of the former historical society by continuing the work of preserving, cataloging and now digitizing hundreds of photographs, slides, maps and other objects to provide the community with access to these treasures via digital platforms–in addition to displays and presentations for the public. The Bellmore Memorial Library has invested in archival (acid-free) folders, liner papers, photo sleeves, and acid-free boxes and poster tubes to house the collection and prevent any further deterioration of the many delicate and outstanding priceless items. Archivists remove staples, paper clips and other metal fasteners from all of the materials to prevent additional damage from
rust. Archival gloves are also used while working with artifacts, and the public is now asked to wear gloves when handling any of these items. Items are organized by categories, digitized and accessible to the public. A high-resolution scanner open to the public is available to use in creating digital versions of important photos, documents and other memorabilia. For information on how you can help secure the future of the Bellmores into perpetuity, contact archivists Martha DiVittorio at the Bellmore Memorial Library at 785-2990, or email bellmorehistory@gmail.com. Meanwhile, the next historical meeting will be will be Wednesday, October 25, at 7 p.m. Author and historian Richard Panchyk will be giving a fascinating presentation on the hidden history of long Island. Registration is strongly recommended. To register online, go to www.bellmorelibrary.org and click on Events & Programs.

Bellmore’s Annual Halloween Parade is a Treat!
E
ach year, during the third week of October, the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores hosts the Annual Halloween Parade and Trick-or-Treating for the children of the community, to kick off Halloween. This year the festive parade will be Saturday, October 21. Assembly takes place at the Bellmore Fire House on Pettit Avenue beginning at 11:45 a.m., with festivities commencing at 12 noon. The parade heads up Bedford Avenue and the children are all dressed up in a variety of colorful character costumes. Haunting spooky music can be heard throughout the downtown district as the children make their way up the avenue, parents in tow. Trick-or-Treating then follows the parade. All merchants that have “Mr. Pumpkin” on their window participate in handing out treats to the children. The chamber invites you to bring the children down in their scary and not-so-scary costumes for a day of gathering and fun all around, which will bring happy smiles and laughter to their beautiful faces.

xcerpt from “Survey for the Bellmore Memorial Library, 1966 funded by the Nassau Library System in February of 1966. BELLMORE MEMORIAL LIBRARY SURVEY HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY The first meeting of the elected Trustees of the Bellmore Memorial Library was held on May 11, 1948. Officers were elected and library rules established. Tentative hours for the new Library were set at eighteen per week, and it was hoped the Library would be open as soon as possible. The Board of Education was contacted for suitable furniture and quarters were found on Pettit and Grand Av-
enues. The Trustees wrote a letter for the Bellmore Home News thanking all who donated time, labor and materials to make the new Library ready for the opening day on July 19th. At that time the population of the area was estimated at 6,500. The Library stayed at this location only a year and a half. They were notified they had to vacate their rooms by January 1, 1950. Friends of the Library had been organized in 1949, and through the Chairman of the FOL, they found a new home for the Library above the Bedford Tailor, at 312 Bedford Avenue, renting for fifty ($50.00) dollars a month. The Trustees had started a Library Building Fund with the money they received from the disbanded Air Raid Wardens. In February 1950, the Trustees requested a $2500 appropria[ďƒ¨CONT. ON PAGE 42] tion

Begin the Festive Holiday Season in Bellmore with the Chamber
ach year the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores winds up the year with its second busiest schedule of events after the Bellmore Street Fair, to help residents of the Bellmores ready themselves for a rousing festive and joyous holiday season!
SNOWFLAKE LIGHTINGS First, the chamber begins placing large decorative winter snowflakes onto several street light posts around the town in late November, from North Bellmore’s Jerusalem Avenue to south Bellmore’s Merrick Road to Bellmore Avenue and virtually all roads in between. These snowflakes are strategically placed for maximum viewing and impact, to quietly but delightfully introduce – and help residents to anticipate–the coming holiday season without as much as a word being spoken. MEETING SANTA Second, many of Bellmore’s children can get a head start on their wish list when they come to see Santa, who will be at four convenient locations around town on Friday, November 24, the day after Thanksgiving. Santa begins his annual rounds in the Bellmores by sitting atop a gleaming red fire truck from the Bellmore Fire Department, and will see children and listen to their wishes at the following stops. After meeting Santa, join him and his elves for a

LIIFE One of the Top Film Festival Attractions in the Country
W
hat draws Hollywood actors to Bellmore— such as Ally Sheedy of “St.Elmo’s Fire” and “The Breakfast Club,” John Amos of “Roots” and television’s “Good Times,” Steven Bauer of “Ray Donovan” and “Scarface,” Edward Burns of “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Brothers McMullen,” Dash Mohok of “Ray Donovan,” Robert Clohessy of “Boardwalk Empire” and Broadway’s “Pal Joey,” William Sadler of “Shawshank Redemption,” Robert Vaughn of “Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” Kevin Brown of “30 Rock,” Sean Young of “No Way Out” and Cathy Moriarty of “Raging Bull” — to be seen each and every year in town? These legends have all been feted at Long Island’s premiere summer film festi-
val held annually for the last 12 years in Bellmore during the second week of July! Dubbed “One of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” in 2013 by MovieMaker Magazine, the Long Island International Film Festival hosted at the Bellmore Movies & The Showplace on Pettit Avenue has been inviting the top names in Hollywood show business to come out and join in the fun of its irreverent awards ceremonies. This year LIIFE celebrated 20 years as the premiere film exposition bringing independent film front-and-center as a critically acclaimed art form that exposes independent film makers and actors to an exceptional avenue and outlet for creativity to explore their muses and succeed.
Bellmore filmmaker Leslye Abbey added «Big Fish Blues» to her list of previous award-winning films, «Buffalo Nation» in general distribution over Amazon.com and through the Film Media Group, brings her love for making independent film to the music genre for this exposition, making a documentary of Long Island blues musicians that profiles them as it follows them from blues house to blues house. Now well established within the Bellmore community, the festival’s driving force, LIIFE Director Debra Markowitz, will once again join with Henry Stampfel, co-founding member and owner of the Bellmore Movies & The Showplace, to watch upwards of 200 films and help pick «only the best» for the 2018 LIIFE festival next July.

42 for the Library’s budget and $5000 for their building fund. When this was approved, they were able to hire a clerical assistant starting July1, 1950 and have the Library open 30 hours a week. For several years, the Trustees had to take out a bank loan to cover their expenses over the summer, when money was unavailable from the Board of Education. On April 5, 1951 the Bord of Trustees of the North Bellmore Library met with the Bellmore Trustees and they decided to work towards an ultimate merger when circumstances should warrant it. On June 7, 1951, a down payment was made on the purchase of the present Library property. An architect was engaged in the summer and a colonial style of architecture decided upon. The Library building was to cost approximately $50,000. At the Special Taxpayers Meeting on February 18, 1952, the vote was 189 to 30 favoring the Library building. The Library moved into the new building in the spring of 1953, and Open House was held for the community on May 31st. The Library’s application for an Absolute Charter was approved by the State University on June 3, 1954. By 1957, the Library’s budget was up to nearly $29,000. There was a fire in the Library in the winter of 1958, damaging the building, books and equipment. The Board settled their fire damage claim for $13,783.28. The Trustees voted against joining the Nassau Library System in February 1959, but later in December of the same year they reversed their decision and decided to participate. The Library joined the Direct Access Program in December 1965. During 1959 there had been considerable discussion concerning plans for an addition to the Library, which would cost approximately $150,000 including air conditioning of the entire building. On July 7, 1960, the Board decided to acquire an option to purchase the property adjoining the Library for $22,500, and prepared a brochure to be mailed to the district residents. The purchase of the property was approved at a Special Taxpayers Meeting on January 31, 1961. For some time, the Librarian was the only member of the staff of nine (excluding the custodian) working full time. The Library had part time professional help from time to time and in 1962 a part time Children’s Librarian was hired. The Library’s budget this year was $43,654 and a salary scale was adopted. The crowd conditions in the Library were viewed with concern by the Board. On May 14, 1964, the property the Trustees had acquired adjacent to the

Library was transferred to the Board of Education. A preliminary construction application was filed with the New York state Department of Education that fall, and architects engaged for the Library expansion. Mrs. Alvin Muller, who had been Librarian since the beginning of the Library, submitted her resignation to be effective the end of 1964, and Mr. O.G. Kaufhold was engaged to be Director from the first of January 1965. The Referendum for Library Expansion was held on October 21, 1965. The vote was better than 4 to 1 in favor of the proposal. Working drawings were sent to Albany for final approval for Federal funds on May 10, 1966, and the Board of Education advertised for bids on the new Library addition in NEWSDAY on June 15th. Construction of the addition to the Library is presently underway. It is expected to be completed by late spring,1967. While the present day Bellmore Memorial Library holds the same dedication to the community as the 1966 Bellmore Memorial Library, the volume of materials and services have changed quite a bit. For example, this past year over 122,000 people in our community visited our Library and over 11,000 patrons attended our programs. Our website, something that definitely wasn’t around in 1966, was visited more than 115,000 times and our computers were used over 16,000 times. Our librarians answered over 8,500 questions and fulfilled over 8,400 requests for materials from other libraries. The Bellmore Memorial Library has also taken on the role of community center and meeting place, a shift that has taken place over the last 10 to 15 years. The Library has become not only a quiet place to find a good read but also a place to learn a craft, access the internet, or play a video game. The Library hosts many different groups from the community who need a place to meet and study, hold a meeting, and even play games. Not to mention all the services the Library provides electronically. A patron can download an eBook or magazine, research their ancestry, or sign up for a program. All without even entering the
building! Along with this type of offsite access the Library also provides programs and activities that take patrons places. A patron can reserve a pass to one of over 13 different museums or register for the latest bus trip to any number of exciting places in the metropolitan area. As we’ve traveled from the 1966 Bellmore Memorial Library to the present day Library you can see that the needs of the community have changed and so has the Library. If you haven’t been in the Library lately take a look, either online or in person. It’ll be worth your while. BELLMORE LIBRARIES There are two local libraries serving the Bellmores. You can go to either library and use their resources, if you have a library card.
