Publisher’s Note It’s summer, and that means clothes that show more skin, including the bathing suit when it’s time to hit the beach or pool. Most of us get a little more focused on our body, health and general sex appeal now. I know I do! Coffee and tea have had their ups and downs with the nutrition community, but now it is known that they both contain beneficial antioxidants and can be very healthy. The antioxidants are diminished considerably when milk is added so take it straight for the maximum benefit.

Chocolate, our dearest dietary darling, has its little quirks too. It is now known to be one of the healthiest foods you can eat, but know that it is not low calorie and portion control is important. Only dark chocolate has optimal health benefits. Milk binds the antioxidants and makes them unavailable to us. White chocolate is such an imposter it doesn’t even make the list, sadly.

Simple Ways To Save Money Not long ago, my 5 year old daughter asked why we don’t get a new car (noting that ours was dirty). I told her that it was a lot of money to buy a new car, and she replied, “Mommy, why not just go to the bank to get more money?” If only that were a viable option, and we could simply go to the bank to get whatever funds we needed!

ike most families, we spend just a bit more than we intend over the holidays, with presents, travel and increased grocery and other bills. The beginning of the year, after the holiday bills come in, looking forward to tax season, makes many of us realize it’s time to tighten our belts or at least come up with some ways to save some of our monthly income.

Here are some of my favorites you can try: • Call your cell phone carrier to discuss ways you can save money. You may be paying for unused communications capacity. Too, you can communicate with social media such as FaceBook or email instead of calling or texting sometimes.

• Save your loose change. Even fifty cents a day will save you almost $200.00 over a year.

• Every time you’re about to purchase a big ticket item, take a day to think about it. You’ll minimize expensive impulse items.

• Make your own coffee. Gourmet coffee shops charge quite a premium. You may easily save $5/day if you get a coffee appliance. Though they can cost a couple of hundred dollars, $5/day adds up to over $1800/year so that’s a huge savings, even with supply costs added in. You’ll save even more if some days you buy more than one of these coffees.

• Shop insurance! Insurance rates vary widely. Often you can approach your own insurance agent with some competitive (and lower) bids, and they will consider what they can do to lower your rates and keep you as a customer.

• Raise the deductibles on your auto and homeowners insurance. This can reduce annual premiums by as much as several hundred dollars.

• Shop for your groceries with a list, and don‘t deviate from it. Impulse buying is typically a huge percentage of food bills.

• Keep your car engine tuned and tires inflated and rotated.

This can save you in gas and also wear and tear on tires and your car in general.

• Don’t pay for storage!

Many Americans pay more for their own junk than it costs to repurchase it over and over. If you are paying for a storage facility, take the time to go through your things and ruthlessly sort them by what you really will use and what you may use (sell what you ‘may use’ and haven’t used in 6 months).

Donate what you don’t sell for a write off, and save those monthly storage costs.

• Ask our physician or pharmacist for generic drugs. They normally cost significantly less than branded and similarly effective products.

• Reduce your credit card debt! Though this is an obvious goal, start with a realistic challenge – say $1000.00 debt reduction over a period of several months. This may save you up to $200/year in interest charges. It’ll also lighten your financial stress – worth a lot in and of itself.

• Ask your local utility company for a free energy audit or free information on how to save money on utilities. It seems that there is a constant hike in utility costs, and many times there are easy, low cost ways to save big over time.

• Eat out once less per week. It’ll be healthier and will save you money.

• Research free or really inexpensive entertainment in your community. Look at local websites and newspapers, and try those events rather than more expensive forms of entertainment.

• Limit gift cost. Most people now-a-days understand trying to manage a budget. Many families discuss limits on spending for gifts or decide to limit gift buying for children. Talk it over with your family if you feel comfortable with it. They may just be relieved you brought it up.

• Depending on your television habits, consider giving up premium cable channels or, better yet, cable altogether.

You can rent a DVD once a week for much less money than most cable packages.

• Walk or bike instead of taking a cab or car. It’s healthy and saves money too.

• Before heading to the mall or department store, look online ahead of time for products you know you’ll be buying, as some of the best deals can be found there, many with free shipping.

There are a lot of ways to save money, and don’t be discouraged if some of them save only a little bit per month. Savings add up, and it’s easiest if you take little bites out of several categories of expenses rather than trying to save a huge amount in one area.

• Be put together! A sexy woman is one who takes the extra few minutes to pick out an outfit that is flattering, perhaps putting on a few jangles, taking the time for a little makeup. It doesn’t take much time to go from frumpy to foxy, so don’t skip that step. You never know who you’ll run into.

People who eat at fast food restaurants two or more times a week are more likely to be overweight and insulin resistant, with increased risk of diabetes than those who don’t eat fast food.

Most fast food meals contain 1,000 calories or more for just one meal. A single fast food meal could contain all the fat and calories that a person should have in a whole day. Just one super-size drink could have over 1,000 calories and enough sugar to raise blood sugar dangerously high, increasing the risk of developing diabetes. Choose diet drinks or water instead.

The best way to manage calorie overload at fast food restaurants is to prepare more meals at home, but when you must eat on the run, here are some ways to save on calories and fat.

First Dates If you’re a woman and it’s been a while since you’ve been on a first date, here are a few pointers to ensure your next one is a success.

1. Relax. Don’t put pressure on yourself to be witty, smart or alluring.

Identify your feelings.

Talk about your feelings with your partner.

Once you have identified the deeper feelings, talk to your partner about how his behavior affects you. Your anger is justified but your man will not hear anything you say out of anger or in an angry tone of voice. Speak about your deeper feelings in a tone he can hear. You will feel better about yourself if you communicate in a respectful way. Do this for yourself, not for him. Think about how you can stand up for yourself, address his behavior and maintain your self-esteem in the process.

or he may respond angrily. Look for the following behaviors: Is he posturing over you (for power and control) or looking at the floor (out of shame and deceit) or is he humble and sorry for his behavior?

Try to have physical evidence.

You may have credit card statements with mysterious charges, photos, sexting dialogue on his phone, hidden email accounts,

or apps on his phone to hook up with others for affairs. Show him the evidence. He may deny it until the evidence is actually in front of him.

Ask for the respect of honesty.

After you have confronted him with the evidence of his cheating, ask him to be honest with you.

You may want to employ a sex addiction therapist if there is a lot of

acting out on his part or a family therapist if it’s a one-time affair.

He may or may not want help with his behavior.

Set boundaries for your selfcare.

Be prepared to set physical and emotional boundaries to keep yourself safe. If he has visited strip clubs or had any sexual interaction with another person, you need to get STD testing for your own knowledge.

Ask him to sleep in a different room or leave your residence.

Tell him you need time to think and process the knowledge of his cheating. Most people can choose to wait six months to a year before making a big life decision like breaking up. The time will give you a chance to process your feelings and give him time to prove to you he wants to stop the behavior and continue a relationship with you.

There is hope for couples to work things out after being cheated on.

It can require excruciating work for both people in therapy, however. You both chose each other for a reason and that reason is still there. It’s up to you to decide how much that is worth to you.

ne problem among people, particularly men, is that they learn about sex from watching porn. In bed, they mimic the big, dramatic moves they see in porn films, but that’s not necessarily what feels best for their partners, nor is it often realistic.

For example, «It’s hard for me to get hot unless you spend some time touching my chest,» or «I feel like I’m doing something wrong when you don’t respond to my kisses by kissing me longer,» are approaches that avoid the twin communication-killers of «you never» or «you always.»

Some clinical psychologists suggest spending some time outside of the bedroom talking about your sex likes and dislikes. Talk about what you’d like to try, what makes you queasy, and even those kinky fantasies you’ve never shared with anyone. You’ll find out what one ano26

3) Get more exercise. Instead of challenging yourself to huge changes in your activity level, try to focus on things you like already.

If you like to walk, prioritize walking more. If you love to garden, spend more hours at it. If lifting weights or going to the gym is a great stress reducer, grant yourself more time for it. The weather will soon be getting better; get out in it!

You don’t want to wait till January to give your life a boost. The best and most impactful changes that keep you on track to your goals and life-long happiness are worthy of effort year round.

In any case, life’s curveballs (both good and bad ones) can change your priorities or inspire you in different areas.

4) Try to reduce time clutter in your life. Take the time to sit down and truthfully consider where your time goes and what things are taking up your time without giving you anything back. Brainstorm how you can spend more time on what you love and less on things just necessary.

Sadly, New Year’s resolutions (or resolutions any time of the year) can be easy to make and extremely difficult to maintain, and making a resolution that falls to the way side makes us feel a sense of failure, a lack of control of our life. If this has been you in recent years, you’re not alone. Nearly one in three Americans make these resolutions each January. A very small percentage of them stick to them.

5) Stress is the one of the biggest challenges in today’s society for women of any age (men too, for that matter). Stress inhibits health and happiness, and it’s unproductive. Identify your top sources of stress and consider how to reduce it. If nothing else, you can make time to do some prayer, meditation, yoga or just time to enjoy nature or really focus on the blessings in life. Repetition of those activities or moments will reduce stress overall, without actually targeting the source of the stress.

Sometimes a new outlook can be that easily attained, at least for a while. Take time for relaxation, socializing and vacations; you need them and deserve them too.

Don’t be discouraged, however. Making positive and deliberate changes in your life is healthy, productive and important to feeling fulfilled, on track and in charge of your life’s path. The key is to make realistic changes, ones that can have long-lasting benefits.

Here are some to consider.

1) Make small and healthy changes to your diet. Instead of going on a crash diet, which historically hasn’t helped in the long run, consider some small and permanent diet changes. Give up soda, switch to nonfat milk or a milk substitute. Try to eat more veggies every day or just try to eat less but more often or to serve yourself slightly smaller portions. Consider drinking less: stick to one glass of wine instead of two. Beware of quick ‘cures’ to your lifelong habits regarding eating, and plan for some bumps in the road.

Use a food journal to see the progress you’ve made over time, so you don’t beat yourself up over an indulgence here and there.

2) L earn something new. Experience and knowledge are some of life’s biggest joys. Both can be found in education. You could learn to play an instrument or a new language, but you could also take a class in something you’ve always been interested in or allow yourself time to read about a passion of yours.

Splurge on something with no calories or downside – learning. You’ll gain a sense of accomplishment, and you’ll be creating new possibilities that you didn’t have before.

Before you start: Commit!

Give yourself a date, a timeline, and some reasonable and achievable goals. You can’t lose 25 pounds overnight. Focus on health, increasing strength, milestones for higher levels of exercise, perhaps making your pants that are super tight, wearable. Don’t focus on pounds when you want a nice, tight back side.

Step One: Don’t Derail Your Work with Empty Calories!

Avoid things that will pack the pounds you’re working off right back on. You have to reduce calories, but there are simple ways to do it: • Cut your carbs • Get Green; eat veggies • Super snacking (eat often) • Late night nachos? No eating two hours before bed, period.

• Drink downfall; liquid calories count!

Step Two: Get Into A Routine!

While this sounds obvious, it’s critical and the hardest barrier to break through. If you’ve committed to 4 days a week to workout, force yourself to workout, even if it’s raining or you’re busy. Get creative, maybe use an exercise DVD instead of your workout if changing it up will make it easier or more interesting, but don’t give into the temptation to skip days here and there. It’s a slippery slope.

Step Three: Pick Your Favorite Exercises Squats, Lunches and deadlifts are terrific exercises for tightening your glutes.

Lunges are our personal favorite because they target your butt and the area around it (hamstrings and quads), and lunges are so easy to adapt to your fitness level.

Important safety considerations: 2. Keep a straight back, do not arch!

3. Keep your head and chest up.

4. Never let the knee of your front leg go past your toes.

Lunges: Your back heel should raise off the floor as you descend, but your toe should stay on the floor.

If they are new to you, try a reverse lunge.

Start with your feet together. Step back with your left leg. Bend both knees. The right shin should remain a straight line with the right ankle. The left knee should go straight down and almost touch the floor. Press through the right heel as you come up and bring feet back together. Now repeat with the other leg.

Perform 12 repetitions per leg, and work up to 3 sets per workout. Feel free to hold on to something sturdy for support if you need to at first. Then, as you get stronger and more stable, you can do these lunges without the extra support. Try adding dumbbells at your side or a barbell across your shoulders for an increased challenge.

As you get stronger and want more of a challenge, you can progress to a walking lunge.

These require more stability, strength and balance than reverse lunges. Start with your feet together. Place your hands on your hips or by your sides if you are holding dumbbells. Step forward with a large step and bend both knees.

Your front shin should remain a straight line with your ankle. Your back knee should almost touch the floor. As you are pushing up and at the top of your lunge, lunge forward with the other leg, repeating the same movement.

Continue with this sequence, alternating from one leg to the other until you have finished 12 reps per leg.

the Summer Job Interview Before you apply for a summer job, it’s a good idea to take some time to decide what you want to do. Not only will you end up with a summer job that you enjoy; you’ll also save time job searching because you can target your search to focus on the jobs that are a good match for your interests.

re you interested in working with children? Take a look at camp counselor positions or summer tutoring programs. How about working on the beach, at a park, in the mountains, or at another outdoor job? There are many seasonal positions available at resorts and amusement parks. Consider interning at a museum, at a zoo, or at some other organization related to your career aspirations. There are lots of options for summer jobs, so the first step is to decide what type of summer job you want.

Once you’ve decided what you’re looking for, it’s a good idea to start your job search early. The earlier you start applying for summer jobs, the more choices you’ll have and the more likely you’ll be to find a job that’s a good match for what you want to do this summer.

Before you start applying for summer jobs, get a list of three references ready to give to interviewers. If you haven’t worked before, neighbors and acquaintances may be willing to write a personal reference for you. Teachers, professors or academic advisors, volunteer leaders, coaches, can also provide a personal reference. Vo46

Networking really does work when you’re looking for summer jobs and it’s not hard to do. Talk to teachers, family, former employers, coaches, friends, parents of friends - anyone and everyone you can think of - and ask if they can help you with your summer job search.

Networking is still the best way to find a job and most people are glad to provide advice, assistance and job leads.

There are a variety of sites that list summer job openings, and Craigslist is a terrific place to start in almost any city. Search the job boards that focus on summer jobs and summer camp jobs first. Then search the part time job sites and use the job search engines by searching for “summer jobs” as a keyword, along with your location. Also check the local sites - local job boards and the online help wanted ads for your newspaper. Many employers who hire for summer jobs only advertise locally. Check the Newspaper.

Don’t forget to check the the Help Wanted ads in your newspaper and in small local papers like The Pennysaver.

In many cases, you’ll be able to apply for summer jobs online. Depending on the job and the organization you are applying to, you may need a resume, and possibly a cover letter, or you may simply have to fill out an online job application. For some organizations you may need to apply directly online via an applicant tracking system. In other cases, you’ll be asked to email your resume and cover letter to apply for the summer job. Either way, it’s important to follow the instructions when applying for jobs online or via email.

Be ready for interviews. Make sure you dress appropriately, are ready to complete an application, and are prepared for an on-the-spot interview: • Dress should be neat and tidy. Business casual (khakis and a collared shirt) is usually appropriate.

• Make sure your hair and fingernails are well groomed.

• Wear moderate shoes.

• Bring the information you need to complete an application, along with a pen and pad of paper for notes.

Keep these things in mind, and you’ll score the perfect summer job.
