“Scenes from a brisk Thanksgiving morning”

Meet the MHS Golden Tornadoes Varsity Football Cheerleaders shown all bundled up at Hormel Stadium in Medford on a cold Thanksgiving morning.

Three Mystic Valley Underclassmen Named Soccer All Stars

T

hree members of the Mystic Valley soccer team were recently named to the Commonwealth Athletic Conference All Star team. The players selected were all underclassmen: Sophomores Scott Nguyen and Michael Russo-Penta and junior Marouane Missbah. Head Coach Frank Cypriano was pleased to receive the news and commented on his young stars: “Mike Russo-Penta was our brick wall in net. He had 6 Shutouts as a sophomore which is very impressive. Almost as impressive were his full field punts which kept opponents at bay. Marouane Missbah was our wildcard all season. He started the season out wide then pushed into center mid and finally up top at striker. With all the position switches he still scored 8 goals for us. Scotty Nguyen was our most explosive player all season. He had 10

goals thanks to his quick feet and big heart. Many times he was playing up front by himself and he still got the job done.”

Tornadoes golden on Thanksgiving; blank Mustangs 16-0 The Malden High Golden Tornadoes football team has had no problems handling long time nemesis Medford on Thanksgiving. In 2013 the game was tight throughout, but the Tornadoes blanked the Mustangs 16-0 in a windy, low-scoring affair.

By Jerry DiStefano

“W

e set a goal every year to send our seniors out as winners, and we were able to achieve that goal again,” Malden Coach Joe Papagallo said. “We did not play our best football against Medford, but you have to give them a lot of credit. The Mustangs played hard and kept this Thanksgiving game close and competitive.” The Malden offense had no problems moving the ball: They accumulated over 400 yards of total offense. But the Tornadoes were held to just 16 points, because of three turnovers that happened in Medford territory. “Turnovers can nullify all the good you do on offense even if it’s a substantial amount,” Papagallo said. “We were fortunate our defense was so dominant…” Malden forced Medford to punt nine times, and that included the first drive to open the game. After the Mustangs punted, the Tornadoes orchestrated their lone scoring drive of the game, which was capped off by a Ray Sainristill 25-yard touchdown run. Malden missed the extra point and took an early 6-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, the Tornadoes were forced to punt and the special teams unit executed perfectly – Medford had to start their last drive of the half on their eightyard line. It was third down from the eight yard line, and Medford was trying to run out the clock and end the first half. Medford ran one more play, and Malden senior safety Jensen Ayuk put a huge hit on the Medford running back that dislodged the ball all the way back into the Mustangs’ end zone. The ball ended up being kick out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Malden took an 8-0 lead into halftime. Medford had their first possession of the second half midway through the third quarter and did not keep the ball long. On Medford’s third play of the drive, Ayuk intercepted the Medford quarterback and ran the ball back for a Tornado touchdown. Malden converted a two-point conversion to take a conformable 16-0 lead at the end of the third quarter. “Ayuk [had his] best performance of his career when it meant the most,” Papagallo said. “We had a very talented defensive back in Jhordy Mazo go down midway through the season, and Ayuk stepped into the starting lineup. On this Thanksgiving Ayuk wore Mazo’s number to represent his fallen teammate who could not play in this emotional game.” Malden had six players named to the

GBL all-star team: Sainristill, Matt Delaney, Keyshawn Bridgeman-Dicks, Anthony Boulay, Josh Bessey and Danley Exilhomme. Sainristill ended the 2013 season with another monster performance: He carried the ball 23 times for 167 yards. Boulay put on another impressive performance at linebacker; he recorded 12 tackles. Malden finished the season with an overall record of 5-6.

Just call his name, “Toby and there he is - this sweet fella reports for duty! Possibly part Main Coon, Toby is confident, inquisitive, laidback with a perfect personality combo of independence and affection, mixed with the right dose of playfulness. Toby enjoys playing host, as a people greeter, making it his mission to offer up leg rubs. He’s interactive and intelligent, showing this by performing tricks such as mastering the “sit command - when motivated by treats, of course. Toby’s been through alot, so will need some time to trust. Vocally, Toby is like most guys -- not a big talker, however, he definitely chirps when he is excited and playful. A laid back man’s man -- Toby loves to chill in his cat tree, even when the vacuum rolls by. But ask him to play a little chase-thetoy and he’s game. Toby would do well as an only cat due to a slight alpha cat personality and is fine in the company of dogs. About three years old, wearing his gray stunning medium-length coat, he gets compliments but sadly the phone doesn’t ring for Toby. Perhaps you could be the one to call?

in the parade. There were several beautifully decorated holiday floats. This year, outgoing Councillor-at-Large Greg Lucey served as Grand Marshal. Lucey is stepping aside after 12 years in public office. “I always enjoy this particular event, because it’s a way for residents, community groups and businesses to come together and celebrate the season,” said Mayor Gary Christenson. “It’s the hard work and dedication of many that has brought this tradition to its tenth year. This year, City Councillor Greg Lucey served as Grand Marshal and I can’t think of a more deserving person. I was also pleased that the 2013 parade was dedicated to Ellie Fitzpatrick for her tireless work in education. I want to thank Michael, Margie and Meghan Drummey for their extraordinary help in coordinating this fun-filled event for the past 10 years.” “The city of Malden … there is nothing else like it in the whole country,” said Senator Ed. Markey. “We are the perfect example of what America is, giving thanks for all our blessings and thanking God for all the blessings that have come down on us ... My wife Susan and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, a Happy Hanukkah, a Merry Christmas, and we thank all of you for coming out here …”

70th year of the Annual Christmas Carol Festival

he First Baptist Church of Malden is pleased to announce the landmark 70th Annual Christmas Carol Festival to be held on December 8, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Church, 493 Main Street, Malden. This tradition began in 1943 as a way to gather the community together during the trying times of World War II. The original sponsor was the then Malden Clergy Association and at some point the sponsor became The Malden Council of Churches. When that Council disbanded, the sponsor became the First Baptist Church of Malden. This is an ecumenical event which includes singers from many Protestant and Roman Catholic Churches of Malden and surrounding communities. This year the Church

received a grant to purchase new music to be presented. The new music is in the tradition of carols from around the world including Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Germany and The United States. The program will include some carol singing by the audience. There is no admission charge. A free will offering will be received. The Festival will be directed by Richard Freeman, Choral Director at First Baptist and will be accompanied by Rosalind Mohnsen, Director of Music at The Immaculate Conception Church. ALL ARE WELCOME TO THIS CELEBRATION. The opportunity exists for participation in the program and If you would like additional information, please call the First Baptist Church 781 324-2745.

not only continued this tournament but it was bigger and better than last year,â€? the mayor said. “From the ‘Hockey Moms’ to the Bruins alumni team, the happenings at Linden Park [were] a collaboration of what makes Malden a great community.â€? The Malden East Boston Youth Hockey Dads and the Malden East Boston Youth Hockey Moms registered their own teams. “We had our first female squad in the tournament ‌ and the dads and moms faced off in the first round, with the dads winning 4-2,â€? Saia said. He explained the value of the tournament: “This year’s event proved the growth and sustainability of positive, community driven and inspired events within ‌ Malden, by providing opportunities to bridge the gaps between generations and expand on the values of community, fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship; by [exercising] outside we can strengthen the bonds of the citizens and also teach the younger generations how to interact ‌ in a fun, exciting way. Any event that brings people together is both a teaching and learning experience for everyone ‌ The lessons of compromise, work ethic, acceptance and teamwork are the hallmarks of the H4H Tournament. It’s the reason we began this event ‌ and will continue ‌ in an effort to show our kids what our childhood was like and how that benefitted our lives ‌but also to provide a fun community event that will financially benefit youth-based programs throughout the city for years to come.â€?
