Whalemina will make her debut appearance at The Coney Island Mermaid Parade this Saturday, June 16, before making her way back to her beloved Rockaway Beach. Watch out for her in the neighborhood.

Check Point I was at a bar in Myrtle Beach. A group of golfers, maybe eight or 10 guys, were at a table next to me. They’d just obviously finished a round of golf and now were having a few rounds. Standard issue, middle-aged guys having some laughs, burgers and beers.

I don’t golf but I do play the 19th hole occasionally, especially if the sun’s still out.

I was a little envious of the boys having such a good time though things were winding down. They reminded me of my pals and then…

And then they asked for separate checks.

What the…?!

A couple of them were insistent they only had two Coors Lights, not three. I was appalled. These guys. I mean, they can all afford a golfing getaway but they gotta quibble over a beer or two? If I had a golf club I might’ve come out swinging. I hated myself for wanting to join their fun ten minutes earlier. I ordered two more beers and one check.

On the same trip down south, I visited friends who’d moved to Charleston. I told them about these rubes who got separate checks and they told me it was kinda common in these parts. I immediately asked the waitress what percentage of people ask for separate checks and she said

about half! The Civil War was not over.

So, wait a second. You’re with friends and you’re going to break out a calculator and say, Joe, you owe fifteen dollars and forty-two cents. And Bill, you had cheese fries, not just regular fries, you owe seventeen dollars and 25 cents. I want to fight these guys, not have a meal with them.

That’s not to say there aren’t chiselers out there if you’re splitting one bill. There are guys who order like it’s their last meal on death row knowing the bill is going to be split evenly. If the bill is being split evenly, they have to order the Johnny Walker Blue and the most expensive entrée. This is usually the same type of guy who was identified as a “pile assassin” by our once-in-awhile columnist, Beefchip.

A pile assassin learns there is a pool of money on the bar for the group of guys. Twenty or forty bucks and that’ll take care of a few drinks and tip for each guy. He tosses his money in. But, but, but, he’s about to game the honor system. The pile assassin now takes the opportunity to buy drinks for other people, not in the group. Buy those ladies drinks, take it out of there, pointing to the pile. He’s generous with OPM —other people’s money.

Check-splitting and pile assassination came to mind

because a friend tells me he and his wife have been having dinner with two other couples forever. One couple always, always, orders top shelf and have never, in a hundred years, acknowledged that they owe extra when the bill is delivered.

This ploy wears on the other couples. But they still go out with the play-dumb chiseling cheapskates. The fault, I tell my frustrated friend, is yours.

Eating out with friends is a team game. If somebody continually messes up the chemistry, they’ve gotta get the boot. How to give the boot?

Well, he could just go out without them or better, do the unspeakable and ask for separate checks. That’s right.

The one time separate checks is acceptable is when it’s used as a weapon.

See, if your regular group gets it, they split the one bill evenly, and they make exceptions when necessary. If everybody’s drinking like fish and somebody’s not or somebody is not eating a full meal

for whatever reason, everybody else knows they either treat or accept only a token chip-in.

If you order a special that’s twice what everybody else ordered, you volunteer to toss in extra. If it’s a one-time thing, your friends might refuse the offer but they’ll appreciate the gesture and be reminded why they like going out with you.

You like the idea of separate checks? Ok, we can still be friends. Just don’t invite me out to dinner.

CB 14 Convenes Before Summer Break

It was standing room only at the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, June 12, as many sought to have their voices heard at the last Community Board 14 meeting before the summer hiatus. From parks and transportation issues to a controversial decision over a proposed synagogue in Far Rockaway, the last meeting was productive, disappointing for some, and long for all.

Before delving into the big issues, the meeting opened with public speaking. A teacher from P.S. 183 spoke about issues at the school including safety concerns, construction and more.

Jill Lauri gave a heads up for the 2nd Annual Animal Rock event on July 21, brought up a topic on many minds—the beach closures, and thanked CB 14 for their support in turning down the proposed Williams pipeline.

JK Canepa said the pipeline fight is raging on and an anti-pipeline meeting will be held at 6:30

p.m. on June 27 at 388 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. In the meantime, there is an opportunity to request that energy company, Equinor, bring an offshore wind lease to Rockaway, as opposed to Long Beach. A public comment period to make this request is open until July 30. For more info, email Canepa at jk.nycag@ gmail.com.

Some spoke about bringing a new charter school for girls with an extensive STEM program for K-5 in fall 2019. For more information, see ropecharterschoolforgirls.com. Florence Ferguson spoke about Beach 59th Street Playground updates, including a reading series program starting on June 23, with a special guest on August 11, plus paint nights, movie nights and more. A Peninsula Library rep also spoke about some upcoming programming like a Louis Armstrong tribute on June 29 at 6 p.m., a science fair featuring an inflatable boat on July 14, and more.

With beach closures being a big topic, Hank Iori spoke about

an important meeting on June 19 at 7 p.m. at P.S. 114, in which elected officials have been invited to speak about the issue.

Someone suggested starting a marketing campaign to show Rockaway Beach is open. Visit rockawaybeachisopen.com for more info. Another urged CB 14 not to take a summer hiatus, but rather focus hard on the beach closure issue.

Frustrated neighbors on Beach 90th Street brought up their issue with a neighboring DJ that blasts music into the late-night hours, rattling nearby homes. The neighbors claim that the 100th Precinct hasn’t done enough to stop the disruptions.

They turned to CB 14 in the hopes that more will be done.

Following public speaking, Rockaway United gave a presentation on bringing a microgrid to the peninsula, which could help bring backup power in an emergency. They’re now working with NYU’s Urban Infrastructure Institute to make it a reality. They’re looking at

an area around Beach 108th to bring the microgrid. NYU is currently in the preliminary phase of conducting a study on the possibility.

The Land Use and Housing committee presentation took center stage with a controversial topic of building a new synagogue in Far Rockaway, but first, a vote was made on a citywide issue of requiring special permits for new hotels in manufacturing, or M1 districts across the city. The citywide text amendment would place restrictions on new hotels in these areas, requiring special permission to build a new one. Many liked the idea so much that they requested this be applied to all hotels, not just ones in M1 districts. A motion was made to support the citywide text amendment, and to see this extended to all hotel construction. The motion was approved.

Nightly news broadcasts, yes, more than one, recently made this huge mistake when talking about beach closures. Incorrect information like this is damaging to the local economy, so please get the word out there… the beach is open! ***** The annual RIBS Golf Classic, a great tradition honoring lost friends, Charlie Heeran, Chris Lawler and Mike Glover has been cancelled. The event, which raised thousands of dollars that supported various charity efforts, had to be called off because the cost of running the event at Riis Pitch N Putt became prohibitive. New ownership says they have catering,

liquor licenses, and partnership deals, which gives them little flexibility with pricing.

That’s not good. It’s been a great time, year in and year out, and the golf course benefitted from all the locals who turned out (and then patronized the place throughout the summer). We hope the RIBS can figure out an alternative. ***** Row-row reunion. On September 8, there’ll be a reunion of all Beach Channel High School Crew Team Alumni.

Last week, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks told The Rockaway Times that there was a meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to discuss bringing sand to the now-closed beaches from Beach 91st to Beach 102nd Streets. On Wednesday, June 6, Meeks showed that he’s staying on top of the issue by introducing and passing an amendment to the Water Resources Development Act that aims to expedite the Army Corps of Engineers Hurricane Sandy recovery study.

Though funding has already been appropriated for coastal protections, construction awaits the finalization of the already completed report. Expediting the process should allow construction to move ahead of schedule.

“While we continue to search for short-term solutions to address this sum-

mer’s closure, we must also work towards long-term solutions for protecting our coast from further erosion, and fast-track plans to safeguard our beaches. With my recently passed amendment, I have moved to expedite the approval process of the Army Corps of Engineers report, with the hope we can move forward with the construction of coastal protections.

Should this bill become law, my amendment should allow our beaches to be made safe and operational as soon as possible, in time for next summer,” Meeks said.

“The residents and businesses affected by this closure cannot afford to wait another year for the Army Corps of Engineers to finalize their report. They require immediate action, and that is what this amendment provides,” he added.

Way back in time when I was growing up in Rockaway, the policemen would chase a rider off the boardwalk on a hot summer day. It was just too dangerous with all the pedestrians. Even now there are signs posted near the concessions asking cyclists to dismount in those areas, but the majority of people either don't see the signs or don't respect the request.

P.S./M.S.114Q knows how to put the fun in fundraising.

Silly string and a marathon of movement were front and center at their sixth annual Jump-A-Thon, held to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). The school topped more than $17,000, snagging the first place spot among 1,700 New York City schools.

Pre-K through eighth graders jumped, skipped, twisted and showed off their best dance moves during 30 minutes of nonstop movement to tunes provided by DJs at Work, who volunteer their time, all to raise awareness of heart disease and remember two of their own, student Christian Benetiz and teacher Mrs. Bell, who both died from cardiac conditions.

Six years ago, middle school teacher and chapter advisor for the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Laura Ferragamo brought Jump-A -Thon to

the school following the death of Benetiz, a seventh grade student.

“I remember when Christian passed, everyone in this community pitched in: the administration, the Parents’ Association, the Graybeards, Rockaway WISH and so many more,” Ferragamo said. “This is the most charitable community I’ve ever seen. I call it ‘the community that can’. Jump-AThon is one way we continue to teach our children the importance of giving back.”

“What this school community did is nothing short of inspirational,” Brian T. Jones, senior regional director at the AHA said on his visit to the school on Wednesday, June 6, to meet the budding philanthropists and acknowledge their substantial contribution.

“I work with about 1,700 schools in NYC and what I see here embodies the mission of this project, which is to empower kids and help

fight heart disease by showing them how easy it is to integrate movement into their day,” Jones said. “There’s a unique level of parental engagement, backed by the administration here that really honors the importance of giving back.”

And give back they do, every month, with their “Dress for a Cause” initiative which raises money for charities supporting breast cancer, juvenile diabetes and Hurricane Harvey and Irma relief efforts. To date, donations exceed $5,000 and factor in the $17,011 from Continued on page 13

Some say the dangling carrot driving this frenetic fundraising campaign is the paying it forward aspect of giving back, while others think it’s the positive impact of being part of the movement to help cure heart disease, but ask the kids, and they don’t miss a beat with their reply: “To silly string the seniors!”

On a balmy 75-degree day last week, the top fundraisers finally got to do just that as the first senior, Dylan Loconte donned his shower cap, secured his protective ski goggles and stepped into the tiny plastic kiddie pool set up in the school yard, prepared for the colorful assault about to occur.

With chants of “Dylan, Dylan,” followed by “Ready, set, go get em!,” the first group aimed their silly string cans, furiously discharging them onto their target.

Within a few seconds, the cans emptied and the next

senior took to the pool. “That was awesome!” a fifth grader squealed as she exited the ring.

Everyone agrees it’s all in good fun. Despite the cheers of “Go get em’ kids,” to start the barrage, each round ended with rousing applause, giggles, and shouts of “way to go seniors!”

And the icing on the cake for the group? Before Jones, the AHA representative left the schoolyard, he too, suited up, took to the kiddie pool and got ‘stringed.” All for a good cause.

Community Boathouse to Open June 30 Ready, set, paddle! The new Community Boathouse on the bayside on Beach 88th Street will officially open on Saturday, June 30.

CB 14 CONVENES Continued from Page 6 65-A-725, or an application to seek a variance to permit the construction of a synagogue near Mobile Street and Reads Lane in Far Rockaway. Dozens filled the room to show their support for the synagogue.

Richard Lobel of Lobel, P.C. spoke on behalf of many of the congregants, saying a new synagogue is necessary as the 70 families that make up the congregation, are currently attending services in a trailer on a school property. The location at Mobile Street and Reads Lane was found to be ideal as 100 percent of the congregants live within three-quarters of a mile of this property and 95 percent live within half a mile, which is ideal as those in the Orthodox community must walk to some services. This space would also allow them to have a space of up to 7,000 sq. ft. and have two stories, allowing for 170 people to be on the first floor and 150 on the second, another important factor as men and women pray separately in Orthodox Ju-

daism. CB 14 had previously requested that the interested parties perform outreach and ask permission from neighbors to build the synagogue. The supporters came back saying that of 68 properties within a 400foot radius, 44 approved of it, three neighboring homes said no, and others chose to abstain from any position, or did not respond at all.

Some who opposed the plan were on hand to give their reasons why, most importantly, parking concerns, issues with the size of the building and safety issues as cars have been known to speed down Mobile Street, which lacks a sidewalk for people to walk on.

After many questions and a lot of back and forth, a motion was made to approve the necessary zoning changes to allow the synagogue to be built, with the condition that the congregation would build a sidewalk on the street. There were murmurs across the room as CB 14 members voted. In the end, 16 voted yes, nine said no, and eight members abstained. Even

though there were more in favor than against, the motion did not carry as the supporting vote had to be larger than the combined no’s and abstentions. The room quickly emptied with a sea of disappointed faces.

The Transportation Committee invited the Department of Transportation (DOT) to present some proposed changes to Rockaway Beach and an area around a new senior development in Far Rockaway. DOT hopes to improve traffic flow and safety at Beach Channel Drive and Bay 32nd Street, where the new senior housing building is, by adding improved signage and turning Bay 32nd Street into a two-way street instead of one.

The board approved the change in a unanimous vote.

The DOT also presented some changes to the Beach 90s, including a bike lane from the Cross Bay Bridge to Beach 94th Street, pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection of Rockaway Freeway and Beach 95th Street and the addition of a new traffic light at Beach

92nd and Beach Channel Drive.

With a few suggested changes, the board unanimously voted in favor of the DOT’s plan. The DOT also announced that a bike share pilot program is coming to Rockaway this summer.

During the Parks Committee presentation, the board voted unanimously to support Charles Jacobs’ request to allow his DredSurfer Grill concession on Beach 17th Street to stay open until 11 p.m., even in the off-season. A request was made for CB 14 to meet with the Parks' Commissioners to discuss the beach closures, but CB 14 said there’s already a City Council meeting to discuss this on June 25 and if the CB 14 Parks Committee wants to hold a meeting, they can. An issue about the boardwalk access ramps in the Beach 60s being closed and worked on right as the season starts, was also mentioned, but this is a necessity that will take about two months to complete.

It was also announced that the construction of Sandpiper Playground on Shore Front Parkway will begin soon.

Roasters Displays Rockaway Magic With Beach & Bay Art

From beach to bay, Rockaway is indeed a blessed and unique waterfront community, and the artwork currently on display by two Rockaway aficionados at local bustling Rockaway Beach Boulevard coffee shop, Roasters, reflect not just the peninsula’s natural beauty, but its sparkling magic.

Peruvian watercolor artist, Mercedes Gallese’s love affair with Rockaway’s beaches began decades ago when her mother moved to the peninsula in the 1980s. “I was born in Lima, Peru, and have always lived near the ocean.

As kids, we would go to the beach regularly, and I was always drawn to and inspired by the sunrise and sunset views from the shorefront. However, I left Lima to attend art school

in Ecuador, then from there, I moved to Europe and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.

I loved Paris, but the biggest drawback was being away from the ocean, which I felt was calling me. So I returned to South America and decid-

ed that is where I needed to be just because I love being near the ocean.

“However, when my mom moved to New York and settled in Rockaway, I immediately was wooed by the sounds, sights and nature of the ocean here. Before Sandy, my uncle even purchased a bungalow for the family to visit during the summer. We all loved being near the ocean, which reminded us of Lima. Even after all the destruction with Sandy, our love for Rockaway, like a rising tide, engulfed us even more. There’s an expression in Spanish: ‘No hay mal que por bien no venga,’ meaning: ‘There is nothing bad that can’t be turned into good.’

And my art was inspired even more,” Gallese shared.

Gallese’s artwork has already been selling at Roasters, for which she is grateful. “My hus-

band is a writer and with me as an artist, I was determined to help generate more income for us to survive as a family. I walked into almost every storefront in Rockaway, simply peddling my art. Folks like Erin Silvers from Zingara Vinatage, Samantha Cintron from NurtureU Wellness, and Victoria Barber from the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) were also so supportive from the onset.

I took screenprinting classes at the RAA, thirsting to develop myself more as an artist, even after I studied when I was a single mom at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. So after approaching Roasters, and hearing some of my pieces sold, I’m so humbly touched. Rockaway has transformed my life. Seeing the blending of cultures, the Continued on page 19

Wastewater Treatment Plant Gets Healthy Upgrade

The Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant is getting a big upgrade that will increase the overall ecology of Jamaica Bay. At the end of May, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced the start of a $23 million upgrade to the Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant that will reduce the amount of nitrogen released into Jamaica Bay. This project complements the $460 million in upgrades that have already been completed to reduce nitrogen discharges from the Jamaica and 26th Ward Wastewater Treatment Plants, which similarly drain to Jamaica Bay. Nitrogen is a naturally occurring element that is found in food and other organic materials and is present in wastewater when it enters the treatment plants. Because nitrogen is not

a pathogen and poses no threat to human health, the wastewater treatment plants were not originally designed to remove it from the treated water before it is discharged into a receiving waterbody. However, more recent scientific research has found that high levels of nitrogen can degrade the overall ecology of a waterway by promoting excessive algae growth that can reduce levels of dissolved oxygen, especially in warm weather months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ensuring the proper collection and treatment of wastewater is essential to protecting public health and Jamaica Bay,â&#x20AC;? DEP Commissioner Vincent Sapienza said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Working with environmental groups and local partners, we have seen tremendous improvements in the ecology of Jamaica Bay over the last 20 years and reducing nitrogen levels is one of many fronts we continue to push forward on.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Although nitrogen wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t originally removed from the water being released into Jamaica Bay, I am happy to see that DEP

is following up on further research that shows how harmful nitrogen can be to the health of the bay,â&#x20AC;? State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This nitrogen reduction project at the Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant will be a big boost to the health of Jamaica Bay,â&#x20AC;? Dan Mundy of Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This project will continue to build on the success DEP has achieved at their other wastewater treatment plants around the bay in reducing the nitrogen load that is discharged into the bay. These reductions are resulting in cleaner waters and a healthy ecosystem this is great news for Jamaica Bay!â&#x20AC;?

In total, New York City produces, and DEP collects and treats, an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater each day. The wastewater travels through the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 7,500-mile sewer system until it reaches one of 14 wastewater treatment plants, where it is treated to federal and New York State water quality stand-

ards in accordance with the Clean Water Act, before it is discharged into local waterways.

The Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant currently removes approximately 45 percent of the nitrogen present in the treated water. The introduction of new, enhanced nitrogen removal technology, which converts the organic nitrogen present in wastewater into inert nitrogen gas that is released harmlessly into the atmosphere, requires significant upgrades to much of the plant's supporting infrastructure. Work at the Rockaway plant will include the installation of baffles and hyperbolic mixers, new process air distribution piping and local isolation valves, new foam spray pumps and strainers, a new polymer feed system and storage, the repair of existing concrete and tank joints, and replacement of tank ground water pressure relief valves as well as the electrical support system.

The project is anticipated to be complete in 2020.

Emil Robert Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018) ROCKAWAYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S HISTORIAN Emil Robert Lucev, Sr., Rockaway Beach New York Historian, died at the age of 84.

Emil passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 7, 2018 from heart failure.

For the last nine years, Emil lived with his daughter, Katie and her husband, Michael, in Chittenango, NY. Moving out of Rockaway Beach was difficult, but it gave him a longer lifespan. Emil was born in Rockaway Beach Hospital located on Beach 84th Street and Beach Channel Drive on September 27, 1933 to Emil Gerald Lucev and Anna Mary Lewis.

Emil joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in 1950 to 1953. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Emil worked in a local factory and married Aldine Caroline Gartland on June 27, 1959.

They had four children, Michael John, Aldine Caroline, Emil

In 1961, he began working for the New York Daily News. Emil was the Chief of the Daily News Private Armed Police Department in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Garden City, Long Island.

He retired in 1991 after thirty years of service.

In 1975, Emil and his two sons began a hobby of collecting old bottles from Rockaway Beach.

With much success, the process included boating and walking along the Jamaica Bay area and the north side of Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s low tide bay shoreline, digging in various spots. The hundreds of bottles they collected ranged from the 1800s to the 1960s.

Eventually, the large collection was displayed in the Rockaway Beach Museum located in The Wave building on Beach 88th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and were on display there for many years.

In the early 1980â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Emil became acquainted with Leon Locke, publisher of The Wave newspaper. Leon granted Emil all access to the Waveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s archives that dated back to 1893, when The Wave published its first issue. In exchange, Leon asked Emil to write a weekly column about Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. From that moment on began the weekly column, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Historical Views of the Rockaways by Emil R. Lucev,â&#x20AC;? and thus Emil became the local historian of the entire Rockaway Peninsula.

Emilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pursuit of local history expanded well beyond an impressive bottle collection.

He amassed a large collection of Rockaway Beach postcards; earned honorable respect from the Cornell Family and Cornell University for the restoration of the Cornell Cemetery in Far

Rockaway; was responsible for cover-to-cover reporting in The Wave's â&#x20AC;&#x153;100th Centennial Edition;â&#x20AC;? and made written and photo historical contributions to the Rockaway Time Capsule that was buried in 1986 on Beach 95th Street, near the Doughboy Monument.

In 2007, Arcadia Publishing accepted Emilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work and published a postcard history book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Rockaways: A Postcard History Series.â&#x20AC;? There are three more publications of the series that will be submitted to Arcadia.

In 2014, Emil and his daughter, Katie, began writing a column together in The Rockaway Times, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rockaway OLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Times.â&#x20AC;?

Katie will carry on her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy and continue the weekly column.

Emil was preceded in death by his wife, Aldine, in 2009 who also died of heart failure, his first born son, Michael, who volunteered as a carpenter at the World Trade Center cleanup and died from cancer in 2014, and his brother Anthony in 2018. Emil is survived by his sister Almeda, daughter, Aldine, his son, Emil Robert II, his youngest daughter, Katie, and his grandsons, Emil Robert lll and Thomas Michael.

Emil will be cremated in Chittenango, NY. A memorial will be in the fall of this year, followed by a burial next to his wife at Calverton Military Cemetery in Long Island.

Freedom of Speech Over my twenty years of teaching, I have had to stop my lesson many times and explain to the students that the First Amendment does not mean you can say whatever you want, wherever you want.

I feel many adults do not understand this as well, as it was thrown in my face last week. It is ironic because the person who said it is an educated person. According to UShistory.org: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the

people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." It goes on to say that “Free speech is one of the most cherished liberties, but free speech often conflicts with other rights and liberties.

The courts have had to consider the question, "What are the limits of free speech?"

So there are limits to free speech! This has been in the media quite a bit lately with the National Football League players stating that they can kneel during the National Anthem due to the First Amendment. I do not know how the players do not realize that

they work for a company that can tell you what they expect.

Over the last few years, many teachers across the entire country have lost their jobs due to postings on social media. Their comments and/posts conflicted with other people’s liberties and they were terminated.

Recently, I was very excited when I was informed that two of my students were receiving an award for a journalism contest. I was even more excited when I found out that writer, Michael Daly and actor, Robert Deniro were going to be presenting the awards. Michael Daly was a true gentleman when distributing the awards to the children. However, when Mr. Deniro started speaking, it was clear what his agenda was: an anti-Trump tirade. To paraphrase, he said that he was proud of these young students for telling their truth because our president was a liar. He continued and said that Trump’s presidency was “bullsh*t” and then he said “F*ck Donald Trump.” When he said “F*ck Trump,” I was already walking out the door because I was offended. I did yell after that comment and informed Mr. Deniro

that it was not about his political agenda, it was about the accomplishments of our students. He did not look up from the podium.

The next day, I called as many people I could to complain and a woman from the Fund for Public Schools told me she understood, however Mr. Deniro does have freedom of speech. I informed her that was not the case. She then agreed with me. Our new school’s chancellor also emailed me back and said he was also upset about the event.

This actor then went on to the Tony Awards (which I did not watch, as I do not watch these shows anymore due to this exact situation,) and he gave what I have seen as almost the exact same speech. I am still having a hard time with why he thought at an awards ceremony for high school students and an awards ceremony celebrating the finest in the theatre, he thought his was where he could spew his hatred.

Congrats to my two students who are both immigrants and are attending CUNY institutions next year. I am very proud of you.

Throwing Things Out

An unexpected house project prompted my wife and I to reevaluate everything in our home as to whether we wanted to keep it or not. We also realized that our kids have been living on their own for quite some time, and maybe we could reclaim some space for ourselves! A novel idea.

One thing led to another and before you know it, there were twin beds, desks, file cabinets, chairs, cabinets and mattresses all curbside! God bless the Sanitation Department, six years after Sandy and they are still are doing a great job. I did learn that if you are throwing mattresses out, you need to bag them. So off to 116th Street and the folks at Mazzone Hardware say, “Oh yeah

we have those!” God bless those folks and their discount programs!

So now we have a room, devoid of furniture, dedicated to yoga. Yes, we have a Namaste room. Truth be told, I like it. And I got to move out of the basement, probably the first time since we were married that I got an office. The mermaid has had an office for some time, but running a house requires one (or so I was told!). And the other rooms have less stuff. So, we kind of downsized within our own home. It feels open and airy and like a different house.

There are other kinds of “throwing things out” scenarios too. Like when the city said they’ll just throw those beaches out for the summer.

Or when the Feds say, yeah, we’ll just throw those thousand volleyball players out of our park for a while. Or when some wunderkind at City Hall decides to test the waters with a “yeah, let’s throw those

parking restrictions out.”

Those scenarios have not produced the same open, airy and community feel-good feelings that throwing stuff out of the house has. Not even close.

Now it’s highly unusual for me to throw anything out.

Well, that’s not completely true. You see, there were charges that when I lived with my uncle, that I would throw his mail out. But it was over six months old and from people asking for money, and frankly, he didn’t have any. Or the rumors about me throwing things out on the mermaid.

To this day those rumors are unproved, and I continue to plead my innocence, but to no avail. I come from a family that had a junk business, and you didn’t throw stuff out.

In fact, you took stuff in and fixed it. My uncles were continually bringing stuff back, claiming that they could fix it.

My mother got so desperate that I think she actually put some things in other people’s

yards just to get rid of them. I was infected with this thinking too, telling my kids that I could fix their toys by bringing them down to the basement.

Of course, I never fixed anything (hope they are not reading this), but it did take their minds off the broken toys!

Now there is a positive way of “throwing something out there.” Every Tuesday night at Connolly’s, the Squidmeister hosts an Open Mic, and Becky never lets the bottom of a glass show. Musicians, both experienced and inexperienced, get up on that small Greenwich Village-like stage and “throw it out there.” They bravely take their creativity and hope that people like it.

And everyone responds with love. So, if you have a hankering to play in public, come on out and do your thing. Or if you just like raw, live music, come by and get some of the musical melodies tossed out by the musicians. Some of it is pretty damn good!

Kidneys The human kidney is a remarkable organ. While I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hope to cover all aspects of kidney function in a short column like this, I thought an overview might be of interest. Most humans have two kidneys, beanshaped organs about the size of an adult fist, located in the mid back behind the stomach.

Their basic function is to keep the composition of the blood balanced to maintain good health. They filter water and toxins (i.e. natural toxins like urea, some drugs and medications, and some poisons) and maintain proper acid/base balance. The kidneys filter about

120-150 quarts of water every 24 hours to make one to two quarts of urine daily. Each kidney is a system of millions of tiny filters called nephrons. The first part of a nephron is the glomerulus, which separates blood cells and large molecules from toxins and fluids. From there, the remaining fluid and toxins pass through the tubule. The tubules remove minerals (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium) and restore them to the bloodstream, plus they remove more toxins.

The urine carries toxins out to the ureters, into the bladder, then out of the body via the urethra.

A routine blood test measures kidney function by measuring the levels of creatinine (derived from creatine, a muscle protein) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and calculates the glomerular filtration rate, or GFR. Most of us start with a GFR of 60-70, which declines naturally with age. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) may lead to kidney failure where the GFR falls below 15, at which point dialysis may be indicated. The indications for dialysis are not the absolute lab values, but rather the development of symptoms of kidney failure that cannot be corrected. These symptoms include hyperkalemia (high potassium), fluid overload, uremic encephalopathy (brain dysfunction caused by high BUN), uremic pericarditis (inflammation and thickening of the lining of the heart), and acidosis (the blood becomes too acidic).

It is estimated that one in three Americans are at risk of developing CKD and failure. Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension, obstructions (i.e. stones), inflammatory diseases, and intravenous

The Rockaway Times drug use. Kidney transplants are one of the most common surgeries in the U.S. Besides filtering the blood, the kidneys also make certain hormones like erythropoietin and renin. Those with kidney failure become anemic because there is no erythropoietin to stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells. Renin, which in a series of steps is converted to angiotensin, is a vital part of maintaining proper blood pressure and is where ACE inhibitors (lisinopril) and ARB blockers (losartan) work to lower blood pressure (in response to high blood pressure, the kidneys produce more renin). In order to keep your kidneys healthy, it is important to keep yourself well hydrated.

When I take some time to slow down and do something enjoyable, I gain insight into the troubles I have or the lack of understanding about someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior or anything that I just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move past. Sometimes it takes a few times or more, but creating the space for some headroom will bring some resolve sooner or later. Otherwise, we just turn and turn and churn and churn, not getting out of the patterned thinking.

It is difficult to let it be and

be in the moment, but with conscious effort, it is doable and gets easier. Life is busy!

Busier for some, but one time per week, maybe?

Let go of whatever is the issue for a time, focus on something else that is easy and enjoyable. Often the answers come from the heart not the mind, but the mind has to stop in order for the wisdom of the heart to arise.

With time and the conscious effort to let it be, we can much better navigate life, allowing what is inside of us to truly guide our actions and behavior. Give yourself some head room every now and then, even when nothing is up, it will bring you some peace and contentment.

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1-1/2 -2 pounds (about 3 large potatoes), quartered 8 tablespoons butter 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1-1/2 cups) 5-6 cloves, minced garlic 1-2 cups mixed vegetables (you can use frozen and microwave them first) 1-1/2 pounds of ground beef ½ cup beef broth 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Salt, pepper and other seasonings as you like Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese Directions: Boil the potatoes and cook until fork tender. Mash with a masher or fork. Add four tablespoons of butter.

When translucent, add the garlic. Then add the ground beef and mix until the pinkness is gone. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Mix through. Add the vegetables. Add the salt and pepper and any other seasonings you chose.

Once the mixture is cooked through, put in a greased pan. Top with the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with some cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese.

Bake in the oven at 400 degrees and cook until browned and bubbling, approximately 30 minutes.

You can always broil the last few minutes to help the surface of the mashed potatoes brown.

with a $20 million critical recovery loan through the Disaster Assistance Program. Nearly six years since the storm, Madelaine has been able to return more than half of its workforce to the factory and has now rebuilt to all its pre-Sandy capacity. Tuesday’s tour was a cause for sweet celebration.

Back Pain And Loo-nacy

Summer is almost officially upon us and the guys and girls up at the Broad Channel VFW on Shad Creek Road are once again extending an invitation to all to join them for their first BBQ of the season.

Hopefully Saturday's weather will be filled with lots of sun and warm temps, so gather up your family, friends, and neighbors and drop by the Broad Channel VFW for some lively music, stimulating conversation, great food, soda, water and ice cold beer while enjoying a refreshing light breeze off the bay...under a tent or an umbrella or out in the sun. You can even visit the Post Canteen to catch up on the latest out at the U.S. Open at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course on one of the largescreen televisions....so come on out and join the fun. BBQ starts at 2 p.m. - $20 for adults and $10 for children. Kiddies under 5 party for free.

Recently the chronic pain caused by spinal arthritis, stenosis and a bulging disc in my lower back had become so debilitating that my day-to-day existence had become a Catch-22 of a mutually conflicting regimen of anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs, muscle relaxants and that most accursed of all opioid pain medications, Tylenol with codeine. The anti-inflammatory I was taking had to be taken with food in order to avoid some really nasty heartburn. The muscle relaxant only served to make me

drowsy to the point where I only wanted to sit happily in my recliner, meditating while examining my belly button lint.

The real problem came when I discovered that the codeine painkiller resulted in a continual state of constipation, which then required the use of a nightly laxative, which of course had its own side effect of stomach cramps.

It seemed that all I was doing was eating, meditating in a chair and arising only when my stomach cramped up from the laxative signaling it was time to run, not walk, to the loo! What made matters worse, was the fact that all of the above, was doing very little to alleviate the chronic low back pain that was slowly driving me to the "dark side."

It goes without saying that, although I was not a happy camper, those family members (including the pets) who had to live in the same house with me during this time fared much worse. Grace and girls began referring to me as the "constipated curmudgeon" who constantly barked at everyone in between trips to the john and picking lint out of his belly button. It was not a pretty sight. Obviously, something had to be done!

Ultimately my training as one of Uncles Sam's Misguided Children (USMC) kicked in and I pulled up my big boy Depends and proclaimed to the world that it was time to do something about the situation. Initially, I discontinued the use of daily laxatives by designing a concoction I referred to as the "bowel banger" consisting of equal parts vodka, prune juice, Grand Marnier and lemon juice. Granted, the mixture is smooth and a little sweet, but it did serve to keep the plumbing open and allowed me the luxury of a cocktail (or two or three) prior to retiring for the night with a dopey smile on face.

Unfortunately, even though I had addressed the issue of stomach cramps and constipation with my nightly "bow-

el banger" aperitif, I was still dealing with some serious chronic pain issues. When Grace discovered that I was then contemplating a trip to Lourdes, France in order to bathe in the springs of the Grotto of the Apparitions, seeking a miracle cure to my lumbar problems, she finally put (both) her feet down and had me seek out the assistance of a pain management clinic.

Shortly thereafter, I was escorted, under pain of death,

by Grace over to St. John's Episcopal Hospital where I underwent a lumbar epidural steroid injection, which immediately provided me with almost total pain relief so much so, that I was so happy, I broke out into a rather loud rendition of Madeline Kahn's “Oh, sweet mystery of life, at last I’ve found you!” (Young Frankenstein) while still on the gurney in the operating room. I think the staff at St.

John's will be talking about me for awhile.

Although I was amazed and considered both the procedure and the outcome nothing short of a miracle, Grace on the other hand, simply stated that "I have been telling you for years that medicine has come a long way since the dinosaurs died!"

See y'all at the BBQ this Saturday up at the VFW! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Life With Our “Artistic” Child

Worried About Wandering?

In regards to safety, what is your biggest concern with your child? Admittedly for me, it is wandering. My daughter could give Superman some serious competition as she too is faster than a speeding bullet. Casual walks on the street, the boardwalk or even running errands in the grocery are extremely stressful. If I get distracted for a second, off she goes sprinting carefree, with me chasing after her, afraid to lose her within arm's length. And parents, I know you can relate. Our special-needs loved ones on the spectrum, keep us up at night, contemplating potential frightening scenarios, leaving us sleepless and convulsed with anxiety.

So what is wandering? Wandering is defined as the tendency for an individual to try to leave the safety of a responsible person’s care or a safe area, which can result in potential harm or injury. This might include running off from adults at school or in the community, leaving the classroom without permission, or leaving the house when the family is not looking. This behavior is considered common and short-lived in toddlers, but it may persist or re-emerge in children and adults with ASD. Children with autism have challenges with social and communication skills and safety awareness. This makes wandering a potentially dangerous behavior.

According to a recent study in The Journal of Pediatrics (www. j p e d s. c o m / a r t i c l e / S 0 0 2 2 3476(16)00428-5/abstract), for children with special healthcare needs, diagnosed with either autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, or both, wandering or becoming

lost was reported for more than one in four children. Wandering was highest among children with ASD with intellectual disability (37.7 percent), followed by children with ASD without intellectual disability (32.7 percent), and then children with intellectual disability without ASD (23.7 percent), however note, the differences between these groups were not statistically significant.

The study also found that 49 percent of children with ASD have a tendency to wander or bolt from safe settings. Individuals with ASD are often attracted to water, yet have little to no sense of danger. Drowning is a leading cause of death in children with ASD. Autism wandering behaviors happen under every type of supervision and are usually a form of communication as an “I need,” “I want,” or “I don’t want.” Individuals with ASD will wander or bolt to get to something of interest, or away from something bothersome.

Also, according to data published by the National Autism Association: Nearly half of children with autism engage in wandering behavior; increased risks are associated with autism severity; more than one third of children with autism who wander/elope are never or rarely able to communicate their name, address, or phone number; half of families report they have never received advice or guidance about elopement from a professional; accidental drowning accounts for approximately 90 percent of lethal outcomes; other dangers include dehydration; heat stroke; hypothermia; traffic injuries; falls; physical restraint; and the most terrifying — encounters with

strangers.

Far Rock Medical Building Sold The Rockaway Medical Office in Far Rockaway sold for $1.4 million.

On Tuesday, June 12, real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield announced that they arranged the sale of 29-15 Far Rockaway Boulevard, an 8,307 square foot, single-tenant medical building, for $168.50 per square foot, to the Rockaway Partners.

Cushman & Wakefield’s Dan Abbondandolo represented the seller, The Jobel LLC, in the transaction.

“Thanks to the rezoning of Downtown Far Rockaway, the asset received tremendous attention,” Abbondandolo said.

“The tenant had a very short term left on their lease and was paying substantially below market, which was the primary motivation for the acquisition.”

The building sits on nearly a half-acre lot and includes a 27-car gated parking lot. The well-maintained property is occupied on a triple-net basis,

where the tenant had a lease through 12/31/2018.

Situated on Far Rockaway Boulevard, which runs parallel with Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Parkway, the property sits only half a mile west of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The property’s current use as a medical office fills a large need in the developing neighborhood, which is projected to see more than 500 new apartments in the next five years. Additionally, the property benefits from its short distance to the A subway line and the Long Island Rail Road, offering access to Brooklyn, Manhattan and other parts of Queens.

Manufacturers are adding sugar in excessive amounts, and sometimes in products you wouldn't expect sugar, which takes a toll on our health. Here's

What are "added sugars" anyway?

Natural sugars are made up of carbohydrates — fructose and glucose — and your body uses them for energy, just like refined sugar. This can lead people to believe that foods with

naturally occurring sugar, like fruit, should be cut out of their diets.

The main difference between natural and refined sugar is the packaging. Foods that contain natural sugar, like fruit, also are packed with fiber, which slows down the digestion of sugar. They are also filled with other nutrients that improve your health like water, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytonutrients. Dairy also contains the sugar lactose, but it is also high in protein, which slows down digestion.

Why are "added sugars" so bad for you?

Refined sugar provides energy — or calories — like natural sugar, but it is stripped of the healthy nutrients found with natural sugar. This is why refined sugar provides “empty calories” with no nutritional benefit.

Refined sugars are added to many foods and drinks, usually as high fructose corn syrup.

They tend to be in foods that are easy to eat large quantities of

such as soda, fruit juice, breakfast cereals, candy, cookies, cakes and other desserts, increasing the risk of weight gain and leading to other health problems.

I think we all have one question… Why? Is the Parks Department just making their job easier by locking the “doors” to the beach? Does this cut down on personnel? By the way, have you seen how many new Parks Security officers have been added this summer?

Just go out this weekend and ask them if this is their first day. The NYC Parks Department’s vision and mission are to create and sustain thriving parks and public spaces for New Yorkers.

Close the beach for safety reasons, but don’t lock them up. Don’t block public spaces. The NYC Parks Department and the City of New York do not “own” the water.

Nobody owns the water.

Murder, blackmail, and voices from the spirit world. Yes, Richard Gardner’s Deadly Partnership has all of it. This is one of the tightest, twist-turning psychological and psychic novels I’ve read in a while. Not a word is wasted.

A priggish, button-up sort is set upon by an unknown, or almost unknown, assailant and is buried alive. Flash forward to meet Paul Jenkins, a friendly, charming widower. After a satisfying career,

Paul decides to retire and move back in with his sister by the English seaside. Upon his arrival, the pragmatic Paul is surprised to find that his sister, following the death of their parents, has developed an interest in spiritualism.

She is not only attending seances, she invites the medium to their home.

While Julia is fascinated by the messages the medium relays from their mother, Paul dismisses them as vague, mumbo-jumble tripe uttered by a scam artist. Julia is first offended by

Paul but then agrees with him after an urgent warning from the medium not to let Paul move in with her. Defensive of her brother, Julia allows him to move in with her. Paul is charmed by his new life by the sea where he grew up, falling right back in with his old high school friends (while being appalled at how age has ravaged them) and rekindling a romance with his first love, Angela, whose heart he broke years ago.

Paul enlists his son, Gary, to do construction work on their home. One night while Julia is vacationing in Greece, Paul and Gary are awoken from one of their mother-of-all hangovers (yes, there are several in the book, all at terribly inconvenient times as hangovers are wont to be) by noises downstairs. Father and son surprise a young burglar who rushes Paul. Paul, armed with a hammer, swings, and the curly blond youth is out for the count. Truly out for the count. Gary urges Paul to call the police, but Paul is wary of not being believed and prevails on his son to assist him in burying the dead lad under the porch they

are building. Gary is shocked at the way his kind and loving father so coolly decides upon this course of action, out of keeping with the image of the father he always had. However, father knows best, and Gary assists in disposing of the body.

All is safe now. Or is it? The kid was acting alone, wasn’t he? And the dead are silent, aren’t they?

This fast-paced novel flies by in one surprising turn after the next where nothing is what it seems.

Author Richard Gardner knocks over the reader’s assumptions like so many dominoes.
