Lighthouse Point Starting To Show The Way

Lighthouse Point, a development by Triangle Equities, is transforming the vacant U.S. Lighthouse Depot Complex in St. George into an ambitious retail, residential, business, restaurant, hotel and entertainment spot.

Through a public-private partnership and with the support of residents and elected officials, the $231 million project is so far moving along on schedule.

“The project has two phases.

Phase 1 is currently in construction and due to be completed in the spring, 2018,” Elysa Goldman, Triangle’s Director of Development, told The Local at a Community Board 1 Land Use Committee

phase is due to begin construction in the fall of this year and be completed in the fall of 2019.”

The overall plan is to create what Triangle calls a “transit-oriented, residential, retail, and hospitality destination” which connects with the ferry and is accessible to residents.

It will consist of a 62,000 square foot retail building at Bay Street and Borough Place with a fresh food supermarket, retail, restaurant, and entertainment space.

Rising above that will be a 15-story residential tower with 116 rental apartments, 20% of which will be permanently dedicated to affordable living space for households earning 60% of the Average Median Income.

The plan is to keep and restore the original National Historic Site registered buildings on the site, as well as the historic vaults built into the surrounding hillsides. Along the waterfront esplanade, the four historic Lighthouse Depot buildings will house over 23,000 sq. ft. of mixed-use restaurant, office, and hospitality space. It will also link up with a newly constructed 175 room hotel tower.

The Westin New York Staten Island is set to open by mid-2019 and according to Triangle “will be the first full-service, business-friendly upper-upscale hotel on the Staten Island waterfront.”

It will have a “rooftop pool and sky bar lounge, terrace with outdoor dining, spa and fitness center, and meeting, conference and event space.”

Planners have also included parking for 400 cars with a new garage built directly into the hillside. Space has also been designed for outdoor concerts, art exhibitions and other entertainment. Triangle would also

like to engage local artists to bring SI’s strong creative streak to the project with unique works.

Triangle President Lester Petracca said, “Lighthouse Point will fully cater to a live, work and play environment while retaining the feel of a charming and historic harbor town.”

The development has received the backing of most officials. The company specifically mentioned Borough President James Oddo; former Borough President Jim Molinaro; Assemblymen Matthew Titone and Michael Cusick; Senators Diane Savino and Andrew Lanza; Congressman Dan Donovan; Councilwoman Debi Rose; Maria Torres-Springer, President and CEO of New York City Economic Development Corporation; and Howard Zemsky, President and CEO of Empire State Development as those who have assisted in the project.

The officials, no doubt, expect Lighthouse Point to be a shiny beacon of new prosperity.

New Center To Battle Breast Cancer Opens

On Friday, February 3, Staten Island University Hospital opened new doors to breast health for SI’s women. At a special ribbon cutting ceremony it dedicated the Florina Rusi-Marke Comprehensive Breast Center.

After Rusi-Marke, a native Staten Islander, died in 2003, her family created a foundation in her name dedicated to fighting breast cancer. Donations large and small have funded the new center, which has been in the works since 2009.

According to hospital officials, Staten Island has had the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the city and the highest mortality rate. Part of the reason for that, they say, is access to care.

The new center, located at 256B Madison Avenue in Ocean Breeze, will offer all the breast screening and treatment servic-

es women need under one roof.

There multidisciplinary specialists will provide early detection, diagnosis and treatment plans for breast diseases, especially breast cancer, as well as patient support.

“We are the first to serve the community of Staten Island with the total spectrum of breast related care from cancer assessment and research to medical and surgical treatment options,” a hospital spokesperson noted.

The center has also a new “Wellness Boutique” which provides a comfortable setting for women to get pre and postbreast cancer supplies while undergoing treatment.

"We will never forget you,” Elli Rusi said of her aunt, Florina Rusi-Marke, at the ribbon cutting.

Neither will the thousands of women who SIUH hopes to treat in the center that now bears her name.

Shy Kid Finds Voice In Catering To Others: Q AND A WITH JACK LIGRECI

Many may know Jack LiGreci as the owner and founder of The Staaten, the North Shore’s premier catering hall. It is there that many have celebrated weddings, anniversaries, christenings, communions, Sweet 16s, reunions or award dinners. Or attended fundraisers, funeral luncheons or corporate seminars, or enjoyed a sumptuous weekday lunch.

Their largest ballroom, The Imperial Room, can accommodate 300 people for an affair with dancing. Without dancing, it comfortably holds 350!

People may well know about The Staaten, but not everyone knows just how generous Jack has been to the community.

The man has been a kind and helpful community force without fanfare for many years.

This gentle, yet driving presence in our community has so generously and tirelessly given his time and resources.

He has sponsored many Little League, football and softball championship teams and has

been involved with numerous organizations, including the Alzheimers Foundation, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy, Rotary and Deborah League, to name a few. Recently we sat down with him for an easy Q and A. Q: How did you first get the idea for starting the business?

A: I worked for Richie Rainero as a bartender. And he convinced me to buy his bar, Rainero’s at 676 Forest Avenue, in 1963.

Q: What made you choose your current location on Forest Avenue?

A: Mike Bilotti sold me The Staaten in 1973.

Q: How do you feel about your business as part of the community?

A: We participate in everything that makes the community a better place. The people make it what it is, and I will do anything to help the families of this community.

Q: When you were a child, what did you dream about becoming when you grew up?

A: I always loved sports. So growing up I wanted to become a sportscaster. I always listened to Mel Allen.

Q: What do you wish you knew before starting this business?

A: I knew enough about the business, but I definitely needed to communicate with people more. I realized that talking to the workers and the customers was very important to my business.

Q: Okay, what’s your favorite book?

A: The Pride of the Yankees!

Q: What is your favorite vacation or getaway spot?

A: Florida and Long Beach Island.

Q: What are your favorite hobbies?

A: Golf and walking.

Q: Who would be one person, living or dead, you’d like to dine with?

A: That would be my brother, Nick.

Q: What is most rewarding about your job? What makes it worthwhile?

A: Being appreciated.

Q: What’s the best compliment you ever received about your business?

A: I would have to say when customers say to me that the food is always so good. So I guess that’s consistency. We care about everything from soup to nuts, and that is why our customers keep coming back.

Q: Tell us something about yourself that people might not really know.

A: Being shy was always a problem for me. Until I met Matty McIntyre, and he and Richie Rainero taught me how to loosen up.

Q: Finally, we all know that what makes the North Shore, especially West Brighton, so unique is its residents and their stores. Is there a funny or classic story that comes to mind?

A: I don’t think it’s really a story. But the people of the famous “Strip,” as we call the area, make it classic. With all the bars, restaurants and shops, it just makes it a very special place.

TOP NORTH SHORE PRICES IN LAST 3 MONTHS Houses in zip codes 10301, 10310 and 10314 can fetch some healthy prices. According to public records, 60 Howard Circle in zip 10301 sold for $1,950,000 in December. 57 Emerson Avenue in the same zip topped the million $ mark, too, selling for $1,150,000 in November.

A couple of properties on the same block were tops in 10314 during the last three months of sales. 525 Valleyview Place sold for $1,230,000 and 530 Valleyview Place sold for $935,000.

215 Lawrence Avenue in zip code 10310 went for $990,000 in late November and 15 Starr Avenue sold for $830,000 in December.

The Barometer Phenomena Before Staten Island Chuck became a celebrity (and a fairly reliable forecaster) there were other things to follow.

Here is an old one that was common among sailors.

"Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning."

Indians used to watch the birds to predict the weather.

Here’s one saying.

"Swallows flying way up high, means there's no rain in the sky."

And Boys Scouts used to be taught this saying: "When the grass is dry at night, Look for rain before the light. When the grass is dry at morning light, Look for rain before the night."

But, by far the most amazing article I read about was how some ferry workers would predict weather on Staten Island. Staten Island is responsible for an oddity in barometers, the "Rope Barometer.'' It has been conspicuously on display on a wall at the municipal ferry house, St. George, and consists of a white placard, appropriately inscribed, with a piece of rope about a foot long dangling in the middle.

The barometer phenomena is explained in the following legend: If rope is dry - Fair Weather If rope is swinging – Windy Conditions If rope is wet – Rain

BP Talks Waterfront

The BP is stoked. Borough President James Oddo’s voice rises with excitement as he points out his office window. “We call it the Core Four - $1.5 billion dollars in private investment for four separate projects right here on the North Shore of Staten Island.

Urby, Lighthouse Point, Empire Outlets, and The Wheel.” Oddo then points to the east to a spot unseen from our vantage point.

He describes the first of the four

projects - Urby, a rental development on Front Street designed to attract a younger demographic.

The brainchild of Dave Barry, a New Jersey developer who, in the BP’s words, brings a hip perspective to modern apartment living.

Urby will eventually have close to 800 units, with prices ranging from $1850 for a studio up to $3500 for a two bedroom. The belief is that the close proximity to the ferry and the more affordable pricing will lure millennials and young families.

Oddo points out that the development boasts a pool, an indoor beekeeper, and an organic garden.

I replied that, being on the back nine of my fifties, beekeeping and organic gardens didn’t excite me, but I do love a good pool! Oddo says that the development is already half full and that they expect to rent the remaining units in short order. He couldn’t help but take a thinly veiled shot at the Doubting Thomases who said Urby would be a complete flop.

Next we discussed what Oddo called Lighthouse Point. Located almost adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry, it is an area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This project belongs to Triangle Equities. The plan calls for shops, restaurants, a boutique hotel, and a residential tower that will contain over a hundred units.

The historic sections will be rehabilitated and the entire area reborn.

Now being a journalist for almost two full days, I felt the need to press my old friend with some hard hitting questions. “What about traffic?” I inquired, having endured the interminable bus ride from Bard Avenue to the Ferry on the S44 countless times. Perhaps the BP was unaware of how a single delivery truck or double parked car on Richmond Terrace near Jersey Street could turn a fifteen minute ride into a three hour cruise (sorry, Gilligan)?

Oddo didn’t waver, advising

that certainly infrastructure was going to have to be improved and that he was in constant contact with Mayor de Blasio’s office to secure funding for such improvements. However, neither he nor the developers see the Wheel or the Outlets of “Core Four” as a draw for locals. Certainly, Urby and Lighthouse Point may draw some Islanders to live and play, but the vast majority of the people who would be visiting the Wheel or the Outlets would be tourists coming straight off the Staten Island Ferry.

He was emphatic. “The Staten Island Ferry is sacred to me. We worked tirelessly and were successful in getting the Mayor to approve additional service. The bottom line is when the tourists start to come we are going to need more. The Mayor and I have already talked of allowing lower deck boarding again and secur-

The BP replied to my quizzical look, “I am going to do everything in my power to make the daily commute as pleasant as possible.”

Oddo inquired “Mark, how many times do you think you will go on the Wheel?” Well, as my long time readers (one column) know, I have a morbid fear of heights, so I quickly replied - “Never!” At this point I strategically decided to leave the topic of traffic for later in the interview.

The BP, however, was just revving up. “How long has the North Shore waterfront been allowed to remain fallow? People are now, for the first time, discovering Staten Island. Businesses are coming here. We are recapturing an abandoned waterfront that just happens to have one of the most spectacular views on the planet.

As I scribbled furiously the BP became more animated. “Staten Island has always been a bedroom community and for the vast majority it will remain so. But our location provides a more reasonable alternative to either Manhattan or Brooklyn for both businesses and people looking for a place to live. The North Shore waterline will be a corridor that will provide for both. When these plans were first promulgated, many in our community laughed and were snarky about the possibilities. Those people are snarky no more.”

He spoke of the Empire Outlets, describing them as being “high end” and designed to draw tourists like a magnet. Oddo advised “These guys (BFC Partners, Donald Capoccia and Joseph Ferrara) are in the business of making money, they know what they are doing.” In addition to the outlets, this development will also contain a boutique hotel.

Oddo was equally enthusiastic in describing The Wheel, which is

due to be up and running in late summer of 2018. “It is going to be half as high as the Empire State building and the ride will take a half hour. The view, of course, will be spectacular.”

He predicted that The Wheel coupled with Empire Outlets will make Staten Island a must see tourist stop. “Post 9/11 people have to get off the boat. They have never had much reason to do anything but get right back on - now they do. There is going to be a mass of humanity coming here.

It will benefit the local business community like never before” His “conservative” estimate is that two million people will get off the boat and visit The Wheel and outlets in the first year. He went on to explain how he has been having quarterly meetings with the Staten Island Yankees, Flagship Brewery, St. George Theatre and Snug Harbor Cultural Center in anticipation of the upcoming surge. He described the mood among local establishments as “excited.”

Now I must admit I was blown away by what the BP was telling me. Again attempting to be a

Page 11 journalist I decided to reach out to a local businessman and get his view on what was happening.

It is mere coincidence that this person is a Restaurant/Bar owner whom I have known for thirty years. Ruddy and Dean’s is directly opposite the ever-growing Empire Outlet sight. Who better to speak to? The view from Danny Mill’s long beautiful bar, as I can personally attest, is of the NYC skyline. Surely Dan would be upset that his view was not long for this world? Au contraire. Dan was anything but, “I think it’s going to be great, not only for the North Shore but the entire Island. It will create jobs and put Staten Island on the map. People will now have a reason to get off the ferry and spend the day.” And - thinking to myself - filter into Ruddy and Dean’s for a steak dinner that can match up with anything NYC has to offer - of which I can also personally attest!

The Borough President, James Oddo, summed up our interview stealing a line from Kevin Costner “you build it and they will come.”

Well my friend, if they do, I hope we are ready.

Play That Music, Baby!

I'm giving you two ideas this week. Now the thing about ideas is, it's hard to have a truly original one so rather than try to claim these as my own, I'm just stealing a couple of good ones that you should run to market with. As far as I can see, nobody’s doing these yet.

Want to turn your child into a music prodigy? Well, first thing you should do is give the little Mozart a baby bottle shaped like a musical instrument. Basically, the base of the bottle would be round and wide and the sides of the bottle would have keys so that when the baby took a drink it would look like was playing the trombone.

Think about it, baby bottles have basically been the same since Ben Franklin or Betty Crocker invented it. Why not design the bottle with a little

musical creativity? People are always buying baby stuff. And it's not like bottles are handme-downs. People buy new ones for every crying baby that comes along.

And, of course, these musical containers would be a hit at any baby shower.

So, get out there and design your baby boppin’ bottles and watch your cash register sing.

Oh shoot, I’ve run out of room so I can’t give you my second idea until next time.

It’d be a good idea if the editor gave us more than 250 words for these ideas that will make you rich!

The idea of a newspaper suited for the inhabitants of these treasured neighborhoods is further evidence that we are blessed. I feel blessed to live, share and commune daily in a place that has raised generations of children and then seen them return to raise their own. To feel like we live in a small town that is minutes away from access to the most vibrant city on earth. To share values with our neighbors, even if we don’t share religion or skin color.

The North Shore is somehow like Teflon to change. Where else for example, can you grab a “kids sandwich” from the Bagel Bin on Forest and Bard for less than $4, and you don’t even need to show proof of age. In fact, the lovely man behind the counter was born in a leap year, he’ll tell you - so he’s only 14.

Groundhog Day All Over Again

More Winter? Early Spring? Call it Groundhog versus Groundhog.

It seems Staten Island Chuck and Punxsutawney Phil disagree.

On the Staten Island side, on Thursday, February 2, hundreds gathered at the Staten Island Zoo in the pre-dawn hours to see what the North Shore’s premiere prognosticator had to say.

The Ennis family- Pat, Michelle, Nicole and Denise, were the first to arrive, driving all the way from Port Jervis, just on New York’s border with Pennsylvania. “It’s exciting!” they said. “Most the time you only get to see this on TV. We’re hoping for an early spring.”

The zoo soon became crowded with children, parents and others, as well as photographers and news cameras. Gates opened at 6:30 a.m. and the festivities were rolling by 7.

The crowd was warmed up by hot cocoa and hats from sponsor, Investors Bank. The Rock-a-Silly Band provided a musical bounce to the morning. The event was emceed by Deputy Borough President Edward Burke. Among pre-Chuck speakers were the Zoo’s Executive Director Ken Mitchell, NYC Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl, Public Advocate Leticia James, Comptroller Scott Stringer, Assemblyman Matthew Titone, and Danny Rubin, writer of the movie, and now the musical, “Groundhog Day.” PS45 student Tara Murphy sung the Star Spangled Banner, and dozens of children from the PS45 Chorus performed songs and poems welcoming Chuck.

As he has done for many Groundhog Days previous, John Franzreb III, dressed in traditional red coat, white pants and top hat, blew his trumpet to herald Chuck’s appearance.

In short order the groundhog of the hour emerged from his bur-

row and made his prediction. No doubt about it, Chuck did not see his shadow. Meaning we are in for an early Spring.

Or as Sophia, a young guest of Leticia James who appropriately came with her own stuffed toy groundhog wrapped in a warm blanket, exclaimed, “Spring is coming!”

Meanwhile in Pennsylvania, the news was not as warm. Following a 131-year old tradition in that state, Punxsutawney Phil arose from his Gobblers Knob burrow amid top hats and fanfare. His prediction? Six more weeks of winter.

Staten Island Zoo Marketing and Development VP Brian Morris explained that groundhogs, or woodchucks as they are also known, come out in February to see if conditions are safe. If they see their shadow they are frightened by it and go back in for six more weeks of winter hibernation.

No shadow? The coast is clear, spring is coming and it’s time to find food and a mate.

But with such a clear difference in groundhog meteorological prognostication, who’s right? Should people be buttoning up winter coats and heading for the Pennsylvania hills? Or rolling out bathing suits and running for the Staten Island shore?

Ultimately the 3rd Grade children of PS45 will decide. As the official Chuck Weather Checkers they are already tracking how many days are above or below 40 degrees to gauge his accuracy.

Up ‘til now, though, it looks like Chuck has the edge. As Zoo Executive Director Mitchell told The Local, Chuck “has an 85% accuracy rate. Phil? Somewhere in the 50’s.”

For now only temps will tell. Until then it will be Groundhog Day all over again. (PS: Neither Groundhog had anything to say about this Thursday when recent reports called for 3-6 inches of snow!)

The Floating Church

IN MARINERS HARBOR

Of all the things that have washed up on the shores of Staten Island, the little Mariners Church was the strangest. In 1911 it sat very matter-of-factly perched high on a bank of Mariners Harbor, past the island villages of New Brighton and Port Richmond.

Yet, not so many years before, the little frame church drifted away from Manhattan, drifted up the bay until it found the northern tip of Staten Island, then firmly turned with the Kill Van Kull, that good old Dutch-named waterway that separates New Jersey from Staten Island. And it finally came to settle on the sandy, pebbly beach of Mariners Harbor, like an aged seaman home to rest.

Old mariners knew that unusual bit of driftwood as the "Floating Church. " It used to float at the Battery, washed by the waters of the bay and attended on Sunday by a congregation of sailors, who scrubbed their faces and laundered their middies for the occasion and rowed over to services.

Sunday School of Church of the Ascension. It was founded the evening of All Saints’ Day 1889 by Mrs. Susan DeHart in a private building in Mariners Harbor on

Shore Road (now Richmond Terrace). The mission was moved to Franklin Hall, at the corner of Harbor Road on December 1, 1891, and again later to Central Avenue (now DeHart Avenue).

When the Rev. William Mix became rector in October 1909, the parish was burdened with debt. At this time, the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York had vacated its floating chapel on the East River known as the Church of our Savior.

It was offered to the church and a suitable location was secured for it in the Kill Van Kull in Mariners' Harbor opposite Van Name Avenue.

The floating chapel and its organ were moved just after Christmas in 1910.

For nearly four years the chapel served the congregation at the waterfront before it was moved to a land site at Richmond Terrace opposite Van Name Avenue. A foundation was built and on July 31, 1914, the chapel was freed from its mooring and moved to the new location On December 26, 1958, a devastating fire almost completely destroyed the building. Unfortunately, the insurance did not cover the loss, so the children and young people of the parish set up a booth at the New York ferry terminal and collected $6,500.00 toward building a

new church. For the next several years the congregation worshiped in Graniteville Methodist Church and at Sailors Snug Harbor chapel. The old property was sold to the V.F.W. Post which demolished the church and built a clubhouse on the site. Land for a new church was purchased by the Diocese on the corner of Victory Boulevard and Woolley Avenue. On All Saints’ Day, 1964, the cornerstone of the new church was laid, and the first service was held on February 22, 1965.

BP Oddo Hosts Dyslexia Charter School Sessions

Facts You Probably Don’t Need  It takes about 600 cows to make one full season’s worth of NFL footballs. But don’t worry: A cow has only a 1 in 17,420,000 chance of becoming an NFL football that was used in the Super Bowl.  Though football games usually last around 3 hours, the ball is typically in play for only 11 minutes.

Around 56% of the game on TV is devoted to replays.

At home, 37% of the game is spent going to the refrigerator.  Queens is named for Queen Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705), the wife of King Charles II of England (1630-1685). As you might guess, Brooklyn was named Kings after the husband.  In Kentucky, the law says that a person must take a bath once a year.

 The first account of surfing was given in 1778 by Captain James Cook when he saw it being practiced in Hawaii.

Cook wrote: “I could not help concluding this man had the most supreme pleasure while he was driven so fast and so smoothly by the sea.”  Move over Rover! 45% of dogs sleep in their owner’s bed. (We’re pretty sure a large percentage also hog the blankets!).  Martin Luther King Jr. skipped two grades in high school, 9th and 11th, and entered college (Moorehouse College) at the tender age of 15 in 1944. By 19, he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

(We have not verified these facts. They might not even be facts but the Internet says they are! Thanks to factologist Sean McVeigh for this week’s facts!)

Borough President James Oddo and the Dyslexia Charter School Planning Team are hosting three information sessions on the proposed new school this week. Each will include a presentation about the school and allow time for questions and community input.

Residents and parents are invited to these sessions, the first of which will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, at St. Joseph bythe-Sea High School at 5150 Hylan Boulevard. The next two will be at New Dorp High School, 465 New Dorp Lane, on Monday, February at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, February 15, at 7 p.m. at the Central Family Life Center at 59 Wright Avenue.

Thousands of students on Staten Island suffer from dyslexia, which affects the ability to read, write and process letters and words. Students with dyslexia require explicit, targeted and systematic instruction, as well as

opportunities for practice with corrective feedback.

The school’s mission will be rooted in providing a high quality education for students diagnosed with dyslexia and language-based learning difficulties while also helping them gain the skills and confidence needed to achieve their full potential via the use of alternative, but research-based, proven teaching methods. Once they have mastered these learning strategies to overcome their academic challenges, students can return to a mainstream setting.

“We understand the frustration that many of our children are feeling; they are bright and intelligent, but cannot seem to learn to read and process as easily as their peers,” BP Oddo said. “I encourage all Staten Islanders affected by dyslexia to attend our sessions and have their voices heard.”

The sessions are open to the public and no RSVP is required to attend.

Last Notes At Mandolin Brothers

Mandolin Brothers, West Brighton family business and a world legend, may be closing, but the stories and memories are everlasting.

Founder Stan Jay’s son and daughter, Eric Jay and Alison Reilly, can easily recall a few. Like when some years ago former Beatle Paul McCartney sent his distinctive violin-shaped Hofner bass guitar to them for repair. It arrived with its own personal and definitely armed bodyguard, who stayed right by the instrument through its entire stay.

Even now as the 45 year old business winds down, stories like that speak to both its fame and familiarity, and the family that built it.

“Our father was the kind of person who liked hanging around guitars and with guitar players,” Jay said. “One day he saw a notice at school that someone was willing to trade the use of a car for the summer for an instrument.”

This, he said, was what got his dad into the music business.

Later, Stan and his partner Harold Kuffner found a man in New Jersey who had a closet full of banjo parts.

“So they bought all the parts, built several banjos and sold them.”

Soon they decided to go into business together, selling and buying banjos, guitars, mandolins and other instruments.

With so many music stores where “it was somebody’s name and the word ‘guitar’,” they named their new venture Mandolin Brothers. They set up shop at the corner of Forest and Oakland Avenues.

Their repair operations, which brought Paul McCartney’s instrument half way around the world, came about, Eric Jay said, because “especially buying and selling used instruments you need to be able to repair and adjust them.”

Has anyone ever come in asking for the Mandolin brothers?

Reilly replied, “Many times!”

When Kuffner left in the early 1980’s, Mandolin Brothers was already becoming a famous music icon and a place with roots in community and family.

“We started off as children, who came here every day after school,” Reilly explained.

“We started doing work like stuffing flyers.”

Later, Jay recalls carrying two guitars up from storage, each valued at a quarter million dollars apiece.

Many famous names passed by as Reilly and Jay were learning the business. George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Leo Kotke, Chris Thile, George Benson, and Don McLean. Joni Mitchell bought a vintage mandolin, then she wrote a song about coming to Mandolin Brothers, while riding the Staten Island ferry.

Mandolin Brothers even loaned actor/filmmaker Christopher Guest an array of folk instruments for his mock-documentary “A Mighty Wind.”

But Stan Jay felt another kind of wind - the headwind that comes with a shrinking musical instrument market.

When Stan died in 2014, it fell to his family to make some tough decisions.

“We came to it very slowly,” Reilly said about discussions with her brother and their mother, Bea. “It was very difficult for us. We decided to close down altogether.” A decision not so uncommon these days. “Most companies, the mom and pop’s, even the big box stores are shrinking. It’s just a matter of time.”

Since deciding to close, they have been clearing out their stock. “We had about 900 in-

struments. Now we’re down to about 17.”

The family business will soon be gone, but the Mandolin Brothers name will live on. They’re in the process of transferring the business to an interested party who’ll take it online.

And Mandolin Brothers’ place in the neighborhood?

“As native Staten Islanders we have a sense of community that others don’t have,” Alison Reilly said. “The people that come into our place are the same people in the shops, that frequent the businesses here, that we live next door to.

They’re all part of it” Eric Jay added thoughtfully, “We’re happy to have brought so many people to Staten Island.”

And that is a note that has echoed throughout the neighborhood and around the world.

Shoe rack: Start off with a length

The customer should start as if the room is empty, or “clean slate” and start over. When thinking this way, it opens an avenue of possibilities and breathes life into an old space.

I use state of the art computer software to plan a design and show how the new design can affect the rest of the space. If the customer doesn’t understand, I physically go and show them what I envision for the new space and how its design and functionality far exceeds that of the current design.

The part of my job that I find most rewarding is when a customer understands what I see and gets excited about moving forward. Kitchen and bath design is very important to your lifestyle and planning is the key part to any project.

Here is an update on our recent progress.

WATERFRONT ACCESS Mariners Harbor: Work is underway at the site of a new plaza park along Richmond Terrace and Van Name/Van Pelt avenues. When completed, this park will offer recreation space with views of the Kill Van Kull.

St. George Wheel and Outlets: When these privately funded projects are complete, we will have enhanced waterfront access, as well as

a community park overlooking the harbor adjacent to Richmond Terrace.

Lighthouse Point : The private residential, hotel and retail development will include a waterfront park and amphitheater. In addition, Pier 1, adjacent to the National Lighthouse Museum, has been activated for educational and recreational boats.

Stapleton Waterfront Park: Just behind the new Urby residential and retail development in Stapleton, we also have a 3 acre public park along the waterfront. Additional phases of this development will include at least 10 additional acres of public open space.

Buono Beach: Known to many as “Penny Beach,” this stretch of beach along Front

Street by the Alice Austen House was damaged during Hurricane Sandy, and repairs are underway.

COMMUNITY PARKS INITIATIVE For a city that is so populated, so dense, we have a proud history of investing in green spaces. From Central Park to the High Line, to our forthcoming Fresh Kills Park, our generation, and generations of New Yorkers who came before us have had the vision and foresight to set aside massive tracts of land that have served as an oasis from the urban landscape. They are spaces for recreation, relaxation and connecting with nature.

I am proud of those spaces—but I also know that for many New Yorkers, the large iconic parks are not accessi-

ble, certainly not on a daily basis.

But our neighborhoods are accessible. This is where my young constituents come to play after school and on weekends. This is why I have allocated more than $4 million to my local parks and playgrounds since I’ve been in office. And this is why I am proud of Mayor de Blasio’s Community Parks Initiative.

He came into office with the goal of tackling income inequality. And this is an important part of that pledge.

As a result, we’re upgrading De Matti, Walker, Grandview, Levy, McDonald and Stapleton Parks!

Animal Neglect Prevention Program District Attorney Michael McMahon’s Office wants Staten Islander’s to know there is a way to help their animal’s stay healthy and also avoid animal neglect charges for themselves.

The Animal Neglect Prevention Program aims to provide financially struggling owners with affordable medical services for their pets. The goal is to help animal guardians, who might otherwise be criminally charged with animal neglect, properly care for them.

Care would include things like low-to-mid cost services such as the treatment of ear/ eye infections, uncomplicated lameness, and flea allergy dermatitis.

If required more advanced care will be offered. But it will be each individual veterinary hospital’s decision to offer a viable payment plan for each owner. Financial consideration will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

To be eligible for the program, a pet owner must provide proof of need such as

public assistance; Medicaid; SSI, PAAD. They must have no other source of income OR a family member/friend/Good Samaritan willing and able to pay for veterinary services.

It will be up to each applicant to provide proof both when making the appointment and at the time of the appointment. The District Attorney’s Office noted that fraudulent representation by an ANPP participant will be prosecuted.

The DA’s Office will host the program’s hotline at 718-8766300. Callers should press option 2 for a brief summary of information regarding the affordable medical services that are available to financially-struggling pet owners. It will also direct them to contact one of four VCA Animal Hospitals on Staten Island that are participating in the program to set up an appointment.

The DA’s Office notes this is not an animal abuse hotline.

Concerned citizens wishing to report animal cruelty are directed to call either 911 or 311.

Glorious Hoops Tradition Kicks Off Saturday

For the past 24 years, it has been the highlight of the Staten Island sports calendar.

The Staten Island High School Basketball League's 25th championship tournament begins this week and what has been

the case from its inception, two North Shore schools, Curtis and St. Peter’s, are considered the co-favorites to capture the title.

Of the 24 previous champions, Curtis has won ten titles and St. Peters has won eight. The other schools to win championships are Monsignor Farrell (3 times), New Dorp (twice) and MSIT. That leaves a long list of schools who have tried for 24 years to break the dominance of Curtis and St. Peter's and have never been able to break through.

It all began in the season of 1992-1993, an era when the Island's basketball coaches had vision and a spirit of cooperation. Leading the way was New Dorp coach Tony Rafaniello, who would go on to become the all-time leader in wins for an Island high school coach.

think again. Forever, Island basketball was treated like the poor stepchild by officials running the PSAL and CHSAA. It was like, "Ok, let them have their little tourney, it’s only Staten Island."

The first tournament championship game was played at the Farrell gym before an overflow crowd of 1,200. St. Peter's, on a last-minute basket by Tommy Whyte, a senior out of Sacred Heart grammar school, nipped Curtis 50-48.

Huge crowds, electric atmosphere and one other unique aspect highlighted that first year of the tournament: Cable television.

First, Staten Island Cable and later Time Warner Cable, brought the games into the living rooms and taverns of Island sports fans. And this was before Verizon came as competition

for Time Warner. If you had cable, you watched the games.

The television coverage remained until 2011 when the PSAL first, and then the CHSAA, signed exclusive contracts with the MSG Network. Again, Staten Island was being treated as a stepchild for the sake of money.

Rarely, did MSG come to the Island to televise games in any sport.

Cameras may be gone, but the excitement of this tournament continues. If you want to treat yourself to a great day of basketball, get to the College of Staten Island gymnasium on Saturday for the tournament quarterfinals.

That is the day the next chapter of Island basketball history will begin to unfold.

Will Curtis win for the 11th time, stretching its lead to three over St. Peter's?

Will St. Peter's prevail, giving the Eagles their 9th title and make coach Charlie Driscoll the first coach to win seven titles (he is currently tied with Curtis' Tim Gannon)?

Will Farrell, the defending champion after last year's epic 45-point performance by Jacques Award winner Nick Corbett, become the first team other than Curtis or St. Peter's to win back-to-back titles?

Or will this be the year that finally an "outsider" like St. Joseph's by-the-Sea becomes a champion for the first time?

Tim Fiori was a retired New York city firefighter and a two-sport star at both Monsignor Farrell and Wagner College. If Tim were here today, he would get a real kick out of this column and say, "Nipper, you're back."
