Casa Franco Opens With Flair at sunset, and an air of the exotic.

The sound of acoustic rhythmic Spanish music, ala the Gipsy Kings, adds to the atmosphere.

The staff is very friendly and attentive. Though very busy in the kitchen, chef Franco greeted and chatted with each table during a recent tasting event.

Many enjoyed a range of Casa’s dishes. As an appetizer and a side, for instance, the hot empanadas were as soft as zeppole and stuffed with a tasty meat filling.

Other tapas dishes include Spanish cheese, sausage and quince on a board, fresh crabmeat and shrimp ceviche, fresh cheese with peppers and toasted bread, fried calamari and even octopus.

It’s executive chef and co-owner Franco Ortega's second restaurant-bar, following the success of Italianissimo Ristorante in Arrochar.

Casa Franco’s interior is a perfect highlight for its ele-

gant cuisine. Once past the door its dining room and bar spaciously stretch out inside.

There is lots of space between tables, but there is a friendly, close feel to the place.

Upper level seating luxuriously looks out over the main dining room, paneled in soft wood and woodgrain stone flooring. High arched windows fill Casa Franco with light, providing a special glow

their regular menu featuring fish, chicken, lamb, pork, beef, soups, salads and even pasta dishes.

Paella, a traditional and well-loved dish from Spain, gets first-class treatment here.

Rather than the usual mix of seafoods and saffron rice, Franco’s features full-size shrimp, fresh mussels, clams and actual portions of tender whole lobster.

Among their paella dishes there are even chicken and vegetarian variations.

Similarly, they also serve up large, still in their shell shrimp and fresh mushrooms.

The Local Is Off For The Summer

The North Shore Local is taking summer vacation.

We’re a tiny crew who put out the paper each week and don’t have a back-up staff to take the reins when vacations occur, when kids are home, and when back to school planning consumes so much time. And we have to admit we could use a break!

Mark showed his love for our little paper by donning a suit and tie and hitting the pavement as an ad salesman. Which, by the way, we still need! Joe Nugent, a North Shore treasure, brought his sharp take on sports to The Local and gave the paper unexpected gravitas. Tom Flannagan came onboard a few weeks later and suddenly we had a couple of all-stars delivering

stuff you just don’t find in free newspapers.

As an editor, reporter and photographer, Dan Guarino tried to cover as much as as possible and barely scratched the surface about all the great stuff going on.

We’ve also got to send some thanks to advertisers who believed in us, took a chance on us, and stayed with us. They are the reason The North Shore Local could be printed and delivered each week.

They saw value in a weekly paper not only as a way to promote their business but as a way to boost the community.

Benvenuto: Italian Culture At Casa Belvedere

The majestic Casa Belvedere, in Italian the “house with a beautiful view,” on Grymes Hill is home to the Italian Cultural Foundation.

Their mission? “To preserve, promote and celebrate the rich heritage of Italy by encouraging an appreciation of the Italian language, arts, literature, history, fashion, cuisine and commerce through educational programs, exhibits and events.”

Built in 1908, Casa Belvedere is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2008, Staten Islander Gina Biancardi purchased the property with the intent of restoring it to its original splendor and making it into an arts and cultural center.

In 2009 Biancardi founded the Italian Cultural Foundation there and today serves as its president.

The foundation hosts a variety of programs, events, classes, and exhibitions celebrating Italian heritage and contributions of Italians and Italian-Americans.

Their “Parliamo Italiano” language classes cater to toddlers, children, teens and adults, from Primi Passi/Mommy & Me through adult classes, with 12 week courses and Weekend Immersions available.

They also offer Italian cooking classes for children and adults.

In June the foundation presented a night of Italian opera duets, a classic Italian film with live accompaniment, and a Taste of Italy Golf Outing, featuring an on-course pasta tasting contest.

In past years they have held an Italian car show, a 1st annual Columbus Day, and a 50th birthday party for the Verrazano Bridge, complete with fireworks! Casa Belvedere also is home to The Belvedere Club, an exclusive members only dining club.

The Italian Cultural Foundation makes it clear you don’t have to be Italian to enjoy and be enriched!

The MTA is now blaming it on a contractor error. Two signs did not get changed in time for the opening of the HOV lane. The MTA noticed the error immediately after opening the lane but couldn’t access the sign during rush hour to fix it because of the traffic created by a car accident on the expressway. ***** Take them out to the ballgame!

Despite beautiful weather, tasty dogs and ice cold beer, nearly half the seats at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark were empty for the Staten Island Yankees’ opening home game Saturday. If you ask us, the breathtaking view alone is worth the price of admission. ***** Clean up your tract. Borough President James Oddo, City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo, and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia announced a pilot of new “Litter Audits” along commercial corridors across Staten Island. During the Litter Audits, Department of Sanitation inspectors will survey businesses, looking for common commercial sanitation violations, including dirty sidewalks, sidewalk obstructions, improper trash storage, and failure to clean 18 inches into the street. Inspectors will issue official warnings to businesses found out of compliance. This is one of several ideas emanating from a working lunch meeting at Borough Hall several months ago between Oddo, Matteo, and Garcia. The initial focus areas for the litter audits include parts of Bay Street, Victory Boulevard, Port Richmond Avenue, Hylan Boulevard, Richmond Road, Amboy Road, and Giffords Lane, among others. If successful, the program will be expanded to other parts of Staten Island and potentially

to commercial corridors in other boroughs. ***** According to court documents, last week Michael Grimm paid more than $138,000 in restitution related to tax fraud charges he pleaded guilty to in 2014. After the government claimed that he was late on making a payment, Grimm chose to make payment in full instead of paying $1,000 a month as part of a payment plan. ***** Catch some zzzzzs. The state Senate passed a bill to change the official name of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, presumably adding the z would match the spelling of the explorer and bridge namesake Giovanni da Verrazzano. Our research revealed, however, that both spellings appear acceptable and that Verrazano may indeed be the correct version. The explorer’s only surviving signature reads “Janus Verrazanus” and is generally conceded to be a Latinized form of the original Italian spelling. The Italian spelling of Verrazanus is Verrazano.

Perhaps we should forget about the zs and buy a vowel instead. ***** Go say hello to the Zoo’s new arrival--a 10 month old Miniature Scottish Highland cow named Marilyn. Do you think she moos with a Scottish accent? ***** BP Oddo is outraged that despite millions of dollars spent on alleged improvements, Staten Islanders continue to endure commuting nightmares. Loose Cannon

GOT PAIN? READ UP!

Depending on the wretched Kevin Boyle’s whimsy, this is either my farewell, or see you in September column.

It has been a blast! I want to thank all those who have sent encouraging words via text, e-mail or in person — it really helped. Six months ago when Boyle approached me about writing a weekly column, I thought he was crazy. What do I know about writing for a newspaper? He told me my Facebook rants showed potential, and that he was willing to take a flyer on me. For that, I truly thank him. In the past six months I have had the opportunity to vent, rant, or just share stories that I hope people found interesting or entertaining. It has been a wonderful experience, and I am very grateful.

So after Boyle pulls the summer plug, he sends me a column from the New York Times about the passing of Dr. John Sarno. He knew I would be interested because I have been touting this guy for years. Sarno was a surgeon at the New York University Medical Center who treated thousands of people suffering from chronic back pain. After years of treating patients with conventional methods such as

surgery, he saw that in most cases, the patients were simply not improving. He began to look deeper into the patients’ histories and discovered that many were suffering with what is now known as Type A personalities — hardworking, conscientious, compulsive and perfectionist. He developed a theory that these traits could lead a person to have unconscious rage; and that the repression of that rage could lead to the physical manifestation of pain. He called this Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS).

Flashback to my twenties and thirties — I am trying to extend my glory years by playing basketball in every mens’ league I can find. The problem is that I am spending more time in the chiropractor’s office than I am at my job. I would play a game on Sunday, and on Monday morning I would be in the shape of a pretzel. I learned that this was called Antalgia, and that I was Antalgic. I only knew that it hurt like hell and I could barely walk. I tried everything: back braces, physical therapy, chiropractic, heat, ice, lying on hard surfaces, lying with my feet on a chair — the list goes on and on. I suffered for years. Finally my chiropractor sent me for an MRI and I received the dreaded diagnosis: herniated disc, L4-L5. Two choices — surgery or quit playing hoops. I was not a happy camper. I decided to do what I do best and read as much as I could about the subject at hand. While browsing through a book store I came upon Healing Back Pain: The Mind Body Prescription by the aforementioned Dr. Sarno.

It changed my life. I have discovered the real reason for my back pain, and with apologies to my friends who are personal injury lawyers — it’s not the herniated disc. By following Dr. Sarno’s principals I have vastly improved my life and significantly reduced my back pain.

Other members of Dr. Sarno’s fan club include Howard Stern, Larry David, Anne Bancroft and John Stossel (and the aforementioned Boyle).

Thousands of people have claimed to have been cured by reading his books. Like many great men throughout history, Sarno was treated with scorn by those in the mainstream scientific and medical community. His theories were never widely accepted and have been dismissed as unscientific. To me the proof is in the pudding: I’m much better

and I have recommended his book to many of my friends.

I once worked with a woman who was about a thousand times smarter than me. She too was a prosecutor, but that was where our similarities ended.

She was very introverted, but knew the law like I knew the mantra on a can of Budweiser.

In one of our rare conversations she told me how chronic back pain had adversely affected her life. I told her about Sarno’s book and proceeded to forget about the conversation. Years later she was giving a speech at her farewell party and said, “And I want to thank Mark Cannon who told me about the book that saved my life.” You could have knocked me over with a feather.

So, if this is my last column, and you do suffer from chronic back pain, please take my advice. Read the damn book!

Do a quick search of “Staten Island parks.” You’ll find nearly one hundred listings ranging from neighborhood pocket greenspaces to National Parks.

Here’s a small sample to start off your own search for summer adventure.

Clove Lakes Park: Clove Lakes Park is situated between Forest Avenue and Victory Boulevard and bordered by Clove Road and Brookside Avenue.

It features lakes and ponds, trails and waterways to paddle along, rock outcroppings and freshwater fishing. It also has one of Staten Island’s largest and oldest living things, a 300-year-old tulip tree.

Clove Lakes’ recreation zone has several baseball diamonds,

a soccer field, basketball court, playgrounds, a football field, barbecue and fitness areas and the outdoor Staten Island War Memorial Ice Skating Rink.

Lookout for programs like free Movies Under The Stars like La La Land on Tuesday, July 11, 8:30 p.m., the original Ghostbusters, Thursday, July 20, 8:30 p.m. and the City Parks Puppet Mobile production of Cinderella Samba on Wednesday, July 19 at 11 a.m.

Freshkills Park: Nearly three times the size of Central Park, the former landfill is the largest park developed in NYC in over 100 years. If you’re into the wildlife, Freshkills has a range of richly diverse habitats for animals, birds and plant communities, and outstanding natural settings for recreation.

A work in progress, Freshkills’ masterplan for the future includes developing even more outdoor specific activity areas for Staten Islanders to enjoy.

Silver Lake Park: Bordered

by Clove Road and Forest Avenue along Victory Boulevard, it was originally Staten Island’s answer to Manhattan’s Central Park and Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.

Silver Lake’s 209 acres includes an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, sports fields, and other facilities.

Naturally, the centerpiece of the park is the lake. Over the last 150 years it has provided the setting for a casino and saloon, served the ice harvesting industry, held national skating championships, and became the endpoint of the Catskill water supply system for New York City.

A great place to walk, the park also hosts a regular weekly volunteer-led runs.

Wolfe's Pond Park: It’s bordered Holton, Luten and Arbutus Avenues, Chisolm Street and Raritan Bay. One of the largest parks on the Island, it sports a beautiful beach, a wildlife and plant preserve and recreation areas with space to run, jump, and climb.

There is barbecuing, hiking, fishing, tennis, biking and more.

During beach season, life-

guards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on-duty and in opened sections.

Keep an eye out for special Movies Under the Stars, like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on Thursday, July 6, at 8:30 p.m.

Willowbrook Park: Archery, birdwatching, camping, a carousel and Star Trek?

Willowbrook is bounded by Richmond and Ashworth Avenues, Victory Boulevard and Forest Hill Road. It’s one of Staten Island's most popular Greenbelt parks.

Bipedal enthusiasts can roam through its woods while avian aficionados observe the many species of birds that take advantage of the five-acre lake for nesting and feeding.

For the sporty set there are tennis courts, playgrounds, ballfields, hiking trails and an archery range.

One of Willowbrook’s favorite attractions is the Carousel for All Children. The one of a kind merry-go-round has 51 handcarved, elaborately painted wooden animals that circle panels depicting Staten Island scenes. It is also handicapped accessible.

Willowbrook also has events like family camping, basic canoeing and movies like Star Trek warping in on Saturday, July 8, at 8. You can’t get any more ‘under the stars’ than that!

Do a little small screen park exploring yourself. Then go out and ‘discover’ all that Staten Island has to offer.

MUSINGS OF A MILLENNIAL

Incessant use of the Internet, social media, and Smartphones, has not only brought on the fear of anti-intellectualism, but also an increased ability for messages to get “Lost in Translation.” The move toward anti-intellectualism does not stop with surfing the web for answers that may be easily found in a book, or refusing to learn the reasoning behind the information we find. Rather, society moves even further in that sad direction through the extremely commonplace use of text messaging and email. I rarely see anyone pick up the phone to make a call anymore, landlines never seem to be used, and I couldn’t tell you the last time (if ever) I hand wrote a letter.

For many people my age, phones without keyboards and app features are hard to imagine, most of us started out with flip phones, or the

coveted “sidekicks.” Sending a text message instead of a phone call became and remains second nature. The keyboard unfortunately became a veil to hide behind, a way to say things we may not say on the phone or in person, and to feel as though we were socializing without making much effort. The keyboard was introduced, and informal interactions took over.

Text messaging and informal emails leave us with poor grammar habits. I blame autocorrect. The iPhone seems to know what I want to (or am trying to say) before I finish typing. Incorrect spelling and grammar were my pet peeve at one point, and now because I have become used to the phone doing the work for me, I have forgotten many common grammar and spelling rules that I definitely should know.

Texting is also undoubtedly the main culprit of the

common miscommunication problem today. It is impossible to accurately convey your tone of voice or emotion in a text. As grammar rules have gone out the window, rules geared toward text messaging have taken their place. For instance, I seem to always have to remind my mom the rules of the “period” when texting. And trying to explain the meaning of an emoji is practically impossible.

Texting is informal, correct punctuation is not used by those who grew up accustomed to it, and using a “period” in a text immediately implies a serious tone in the message. If you add punctuation to your text, you’re implying you’re mad. And do not ever simply write the letter “k” to mean “okay,” then you are definitely upset and whoever you are speaking to should probably just stop talking. See why I say it is easy to get “Lost in Trans-

lation?” This miscommunication often leads to many disagreements that may have been easily avoided.

As people become accustomed to socializing through keyboards, I fear people my age and younger are going to lose the essential ability to interact face-to-face. People that tend to be more reserved may never feel the need to come out of their shell. Sincerity in messages may be easily lost along with meaningful conversations.

A Little Victory Turns 1

Light up the marquee, raise the curtain and cue the band for a rousing chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’. Staten Island’s ‘newest community theatre’ just racked up its first anniversary.

The Little Victory Theatre celebrated its first opening night, with an original play called Heaven Help Me, on Friday, June 17, 2016.

A year later, finishing a sold-out run of Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues, it is ready for a bow.

Performer and former NYPD detective Alberta Thompson founded the Little Victory with theater partner and playwright Joe Simonelli, who also wrote Heaven Help Me. A tour of the Little Victory reveals the hard work that has gone into changing the venue from a former storefront into a welcoming, cozy, working theatre.

Simonelli has since moved

on to other projects. But Thompson has continued as the theatre’s prime mover, handling bookings, publicity, renovations, props and programs, and is often the pleasant voice you’ll speak to when calling up for tickets.

This first year has seen original, classic and contemporary plays, comedy nights, magicians, dance recitals, a live radio play, staged readings, young adult and children’s workshops, puppet shows, their first annual cabaret revue and first annual playwrights festival. And rave reviews from NYTheatreGuide.com and NY1 News.

“It is my goal to give both playwrights and actors a chance to perform and have their shows brought to life,” Thompson says, and bring the magic of live theatre to Staten Islanders.

Judging by the applause of local audiences, the Little Victory’s first act has done just that.

SI Then: Fort Wadsworth

Its sprawling 226-acres may be a serene National Park now, but Fort Wadsworth has seen its share of action in the past.

It is possibly the longest continually used military installation in the country.

In 1636 the Dutch built a defensive blockhouse, later burnt down by Indians. A second blockhouse was built, and the area was later taken over and fortified by the British. During the American Revolution it was a prime location for their forces.

By the War of 1812 further defenses had been built and the U.S. Army and New York State

Militia guarded the Verrazano Narrows and the entrance to New York Harbor.

Replacing an earlier fort, the granite and brick Fort Tompkins was completed in 1876. Also replacing an earlier masonry fort was Fort Richmond, completed in 1862. It was renamed Battery Weed in 1902.

The entire post was named Fort Wadsworth in 1902, after Brevet Major General James Wadsworth, killed at the Civil War’s Battle of the Wilderness.

From the early 1900’s through WWII, Coast Artillery soldiers manned large gun batteries as part of the U.S. coastal defenses.

Shortly after World War I, Fort Wadsworth also became an infantry post.

From 1955 until 1960 Fort Wadsworth was the headquarters of the 52nd Anti-Aircraft Brigade. They oversaw the Nike Missile firing batteries of the New York Defenses.

Since then its long-gone guns have been quiet. But its watchful fortifications still keep a sharp lookout over Staten Island’s waters.

HERE COMES THE PARADE!

For its 107th year the Travis 4th of July Parade will celebrate Independence Day with a colorful grand display this Tuesday.

The parade steps off at 12:30 p.m. It will start at the Showplace Center shopping center at 141 East Service Road, between Victory Boulevard and Wild Avenue.

From there marchers will make their way west on Victory Boulevard. They will turn right on Glen Street and proceed along as it turns into Cannon Avenue.

At the intersection of Cannon Avenue and Victory Boulevard, the parade will once again turn right and head south on Victory back to the shopping center.

A noon ceremony in front of P.S. 26 will recognize Grand

Marshall New York State Assemblyman Michael Cusick and other guests.

Nearly a dozen marshals and scores of elected officials and dignitaries are expected. So are contingents from the Richmond County Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, veterans’ groups and active duty service members.

Fire departments, ambulance corps, school, business, community and civic organizations and others will be there. Pageant winners, dance and theatre troupes and even martial arts and classic car enthusiasts will also be represented.

Some 16 bands and musical acts marched last year, from ragtime to DJ’s, bugle corps, bagpipes, steel bands, brass, jazz and church musicians and a rolling, romping clown band. This year is expected to meet and surpass that musical multitude.

On Tuesday, July 4, Travis and all of Staten Island will celebrate our history and have grand time doing it!

bus or ride a bike, you know that additional road resurfacings are badly needed throughout the city. My own experiences on the road attest to the fact that this is not just a quality of life issue, but also a public safety and economic issue.

I am happy to report that we have paved more lane miles in the past year than we have in decades. As Deputy Majority Leader and member of the Council’s Budget Negotiating Team, I fought to repave even more lane miles. This fiscal year, we will repave 160 lane miles in Staten Island, and in 2017, we will repave 205 miles—a substantial increase over the target of 120 miles paved in our borough in previous years.

Together, we can keep our streets safe. Here’s what’s being done so far.

- Additional officers on our streets. In this year’s budget,

we have added 1,700 police officers, many of whom patrol our streets with a focus on connecting with the community. I support this model, and I look forward to working with them in the coming year.

Look for these neighborhood coordinating officers (NCOs) on the beat!

- Community initiatives. Last summer, a handful of North Shore residents decided to do something to prevent crime.

Three nights a week, they occupied a different block. Conversations and camaraderie, once an important part of evening life, returned, crime receded and friendships were made!

- Police-community connections. The NYPD on Staten Island kicked off last summer with “Finest Fridays,” featuring the popular NYPD rock wall and other activities for children.

These Friday night events consistently resulted in no major incidents of crime.

SI Museum Summer Stuff

It may be a hot summer, but the Staten Island Museum is gearing up for some cool activities for all ages.

Dabble in a day of painting to kick it all off. On Saturday, July 1, the museum will be holding a Family Art Workshop: Watercolor Landscapes.

First you can be inspired by their Staten Island SEEN exhibition on the second floor in the Elizabeth Egbert Gallery.

SEEN traces SI’s unique history and landscape from the the 1600's to today. It presents works by both local amateur and professional artists, working in a broad range of styles and materials from ink drawing to anaglyph 3-D video.

The painting workshops are ongoing that day. So afterwards you can drop in anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. Let your creative streak flow and work with watercolor paints and various techniques to paint a landscape work of your own.

Bottoms Up can’t put all kidding aside. It’s the procedure which makes comedians out of every patient.

Gastro docs have heard it all.

“Tell my wife you didn’t find my head up there.”

“Now I know how a muppet feels.” “You put your left hand in, you take your left hand out…” “Captain Kirk, you’re boldly going where no man has gone before.”

If the two doctors I’ve had are representative of the field, they’re among the most affable docs you could find. The first guy I went to in Brooklyn had a phone number of 718-748SHIT. That’s pretty good marketing – how could you forget

that number.

While behind me, so to speak, he discovered a polyp and announced, “We’re engaged.” That meant I’d be seeing him again. But it was a good thing it was caught when it was. This was more than 15 years ago. That one-time polyp got caught and hasn’t been seen since.

Of course, colonoscopies and its weird cousin, the colonic, have become hip since the doctor first landed on my moon.

You’ve got Katie Couric, Leo de Caprio, Gwyneth Paltrow and others extolling the wonders of the colon clean out. And I gotta say, you do feel like a million bucks when it’s all over.

Just don’t make plans the night before. Even the directions on the nuclear stuff you take says, don’t worry, it will work. Be patient. If you need something from the store, send someone else to get it.

Once the purge starts, you are … as the door on the airplane says, occupado. And word to the wise, never trust a cough, sneeze or even a giggle. When

the fun starts, just remember it’s for a good cause (and you don’t even have to start a non-profit). You’ll feel like a member of Congress at the State of The Union Address as you will stand and sit about a hundred times.

The next morning, the day of the procedure, is the one time of year people can’t tell you that you’re full of crap. You really won’t be.

So you newbies, you scaredy cats, get to it. Compared to the night before, the actual procedure is a walk in the park.

Sometimes they let you watch on a little TV screen as it’s being done but it’s too reminiscent of a Kardashian TV show so opt for the anesthesia. And as soon as you’re alert, you can make lunch plans.

PVC Bike Rack

Sliders with Crunchy Green Apple Slaw

Serves: 4 Look for ground turkey rather than ground turkey breast – the ground turkey has a bit more fat and flavor.

Ingredients: ½ teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper 1 pound ground turkey 1 cup shredded coleslaw mix ½ cup chopped granny smith apple, cut into small chunks ¼ cup canola mayonnaise 2 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 small cucumber, cut into ¼” thick slices 8 (1-1/4 0z) whole wheat slider buns, toasted Directions: Preheat broiler with oven rack in upper middle position.

Combine first 4 ingredients in a medium bowl. Divide and shape turkey mixture into 8 (2”) patties. Arrange patties on a baking sheet. Broil 2-3 minutes each side or until done.

Combine coleslaw, apple, mayonnaise, and juice in a bowl. Divide cucumber slices over bottom halves of buns.

Top evenly with turkey burgers, coleslaw mixture, and top halves of buns.

It will air live from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. And to start things off there will be a Free Live Listening Launch Party at the station on Saturday from 12 to 3p.m. Their arts-based programming will include arts, culture and national and international music span-

“Maker Park Radio is a community station that can be heard all over the world,” notes CEO and Program Director Kristin Wallace.

Wallace says they have over 40 volunteer DJ’s and producers lined up already.

She says with pride, “We draw from music, social, ethnic and neighborhood communities to be the voice of our island.”

Looking for a way to keep the kids bikes from laying all over the yard?

Try this PVC Bike Rack, it will hold 5 bikes.

What you’ll need: 4- Lengths of 1 ½ PVC pipe 14- 1 ½ PVC elbows 20- 1 ½ PVC T’s 1- Can of PVC glue Making the cuts: Cut 10 pieces of PVC 3 ½ inches long.

Then cut the rest into 12 inch pieces.

Connecting everything together: 1- Glue 2- 12 inch pieces into either end of an elbow making a V. Repeat 10 times 2- Glue the ends of the V’s you just made into the “T” end of the PVC T’s.

Be sure they are at a 90 degree angle to your elbows to make your “V” stand upright.

3- Standing up one of your V’s,

glue a 12 inch piece in to each T, so that they are coming out on the same side. Connect the 12 inch pieces using another 12 inch piece and 2 elbows.

4- On the other side of your T’s, glue a piece of 3 inch PVC..

5- Now glue on a V to the 3 ½ pieces, and glue a 12 inch piece to the open side of the T’s.

6- Repeat steps 4 and 5, 4 times.

7- To close the end off, repeat step 3 Note: To insure that you have all your pieces in the proper order, you can assemble your bike rack without glue, then remove one piece at a time and gluing it as you go.

Summer Art Show

The forecast is for the summer sun to be fixed right over the Art on the Terrace gallery well into August.

Starting this Friday, June 30, the Staten Island Creative Community is launching their Summer Art Show.

The exhibition, with a mix of other interactive events, will run through Sunday, August 13.

It will feature a variety of works by members in a wide range of creative genres and media, all themed around summer.

An opening artist reception will officially inaugurate the show on Saturday evening, July 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Earlier, from 12 to 5, on Saturday, SICC is having its Second Saturday Hand Craft Fair. Get a look at the exhibition and peruse work from local SI artisans.

Next is Second Sunday Spoken Word. From 3 to 6 p.m. on July 9.

This month’s session is called “The Summer Between” and features original stories, poetry, and music/lyrics based on summer themes.

On July 20, enjoy a classic cinematic Third Thursday Film Night on July 20.

Titone: Stop Human Trafficking

The New York State Assembly has passed legislation authored

by Assemblyman Matthew Titone requiring all parties bidding on state contracts analyze and protect their supply chains from involvement in human trafficking and slavery.

“Human trafficking involves the modern-day recruitment, transport, and sale of people for forced labor. Through violence, threats, coercion and fraud, victims are forced to work against their will and often without pay in factories, agriculture, and other industries,” said Assemblyman Titone. “These practices are repugnant to every New Yorker who learns of them.”

Raw materials and commodities that are ubiquitous in global trade are often manufactured in countries endemic with slave labor. A substantial portion of metals, minerals, and even food products bought and sold around the world, including New York State, are demonstra-

bly linked to slavery. Through tax payer dollars, New Yorkers are unwittingly supporting the unconscionable practices of forced labor. This legislation will require state contractors to scrutinize their entire supply chains and report to the state that their business is free of involvement in slaver labor.

The U.S. Department of State’s report on human trafficking summarized the extent to which global commerce involves slavery at certain points within the chain of commerce.

Even reputable companies can unwittingly profit from human trafficking when they do not vet suppliers prior to purchasing goods or contracting for labor.

"Human trafficking and forced labor make products that feed into the legitimate economy," said Assemblyman Titone. “I am unaware of any New Yorker who would tolerate these deplorable and immoral labor practices. As Americans,

we all agree that it is every person’s basic right to live in freedom, and this legislation will help to achieve just that.”

The U.S. Department of Labor maintains a list of products originating in certain countries which should be suspected of association with human trafficking. A large portion of common manufacturing materials such as coltan, bricks, textiles, nails, bolts, timber and metal ores sold on the global market are produced by slave labor.

This legislation mandates that state contractors prove that their supply chains and subcontractors are not in any way associated with human trafficking. As a part of any bid for a state contract, the contractor will be required to outline steps they have taken to ensure that their operations are in no way connected to slavery. This will help prevent New York taxpayers from unwittingly financing criminal activity that deprives

people of their most basic freedoms. Assemblyman Titone notes that while this legislation is restricted to state contracts only, he urges every municipality and township across New York State to adopt similar measures.

Recently, the Assembly passed another Titone measure aimed at combatting modern- day human trafficking.

Assembly bill A07034 requires that hotel and casino employees undergo training on how to identify instances of forced trafficking and kidnapping in the sex industry. Casinos and hotels can be hotspots for traffickers, therefore properly trained employees can be a particularly important component in the fight against slavery. The Local Kid Takes On Graduation Trust me, I've walked around the school with no shoes on and even tap danced down the hallways many times (don’t tell Mrs. Hynes) . Those are everyday things I do in my actual home. Especially when I was younger, I had such an issue with accepting who I am. I always believed that since I was so different compared to my classmates that that automatically meant I was an outsider and no one liked me. However, I was just too blind at that time to see how loving each of my classmates is and how accepting they are. Now, I have a reputation as the “lil’ bean” of the class, and wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

When brainstorming for an article this week I had two choices: write about how graduation went for me and the awards I received, or write about my classmates and my experiences with them. Overall, I decided that my class as a whole definitely deserved an article more than I. Inside jokes including “WOAH,

Ask any family member, graduate, or anyone who attended the graduation of the OLGC Class of 2017. All I said was “there is something in my eye” or “I want to itch my eye so bad but I don’t want to smudge my mascara.”

Though I did have some sort of fuzz or speck of makeup in my eye, I had something else hiding in my eye waiting to come out too. Even if it was hard to admit in that moment, I truthfully did have a tear in my eye as well. I constantly put down the idea of crying at graduation. However, my thoughts were proven to be wrong, and the bittersweet moment turned into 36 teenagers tearing up plenty of times during the ceremony. As I look back on graduation, which was almost two weeks ago, I still get a bit upset. Everything has to come to an end, that’s just how life works, but some things are just so hard to say goodbye to.

From since I can remember, OLGC felt like a home. And as cheesy as it sounds it’s true.

Though I have a talent for writing very sappy things, I didn’t want to make this article sad. I just wanted it to be straightforward because that is what our class is. We don’t sug-

arcoat anything. We are truthful, loyal, caring, and so many other things. We celebrate each other’s victories, and help others get back up after our failures. As District Attorney Michael McMahon said at graduation, he had to come to OLGC to present his award to see if the rumors were true. And the rumor that my class was the best eighth grade on Staten Island is definitely no rumor. It’s a cold, hard fact. If you don’t believe me, feel free to contact me and I will give you a list of our awards ranging from sports championships to ranking number 1 on the Math State Test. As I end this article, I'm at a loss for words because I can only say how great my class is so many times. I hope and pray that Villa in the fall can give me a similar, or even better, school experience and will miss my class’s loud personalities at 7:30 in the morning. To my beloved class, we made it, my friends, we did.

I’ll probably see you very soon at another party because we never stop!

PLEADING FOR AN AUTOMATIC DOOR OPENER

Back to the bathroom we go. As I’ve said before, most of my best ideas occur to me while…um “sitting” in the bathroom. Perched on my porcelain throne, many of my thoughts naturally have to do with improving life around the tiled kingdoms of the world. In this case, let’s focus on the bane of all our existences: the public bathroom. NOBODY likes using a public bathroom. Why? In a word, cooties. Every surface is a petri dish, breeding diseases so nasty and potentially fatal that they haven’t even been named yet. I’m sure Dengue Fever started in a Denny’s bathroom. We en-

ter these dens of distemper only under the most urgent of circumstances. And we all do our earnest best not to touch ANYTHING. We line toilet seats with paper. We hover and hope our aim is true. We use our shoes to lift or drop the seat. Anything to keep the evil bacteria at bay.

Thankfully, in recent years, many public restrooms have gone to automatic flushers, automatic sinks, and automatic hand dryers. All in recognition of the universal desire to maintain a safe distance between our hands and the (hopefully) invisible boogers. The one thing that has not gone automatic that needs to is the door.

After successfully navigating a touch free trip around the microbe merry-go-round, the last thing I want to do is touch the door handle to leave. Especially knowing how many animals complete their business, then don’t even wash their hands (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!). I’ve used toilet paper to grab the handle with, but that means remembering to take some when leaving the stall, and then I have to carry the wad around until I find a garbage

can. You can wait for the next person to enter the bathroom, but that may take so long you start to look like a creep. The answer is simple: just add the same electronic eye to the door that you already have on the toilet, sink, and hand dryer. When I wave my hand, the door pops open without a touch, and I can say a worry free goodbye to the incubator of certain death. Now, about those people who don’t wash their hands…I got some ideas for you…

By Tom Flannagan While we are glad to hear that this publication is catching on with the local community we will be taking a summer hiatus with the publication of this column.

We will, however return on September 14 with all the up to date happenings in the golf community. The editor has promised to possibly do a couple of ONLINE summer issues while the golf is hot.

GREAT DEAL FOR GREAT CAUSE: Certainly we are all familiar with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and all that they have done for America’s Bravest. This is an organization that just continues to work hard to help our catastrophically injured service members by building 200 mortgage-free Smart Homes. Thus far, 56 homes have either been completed, under construction or in the design stage.

In their continued effort to raise money, they are now offering a raffle that will appeal to all golfers. For just a $100 ticket (where the number of tickets is limited to 250) you can win a round of golf for a foursome at one of 13 great golf courses in the ULTIMATE GOLF COURSE

CATCHING UP: With the Steve Zuntag Classic in the books, players of all ages and genders are busy filling out tournament entries for upcoming events. The junior ranks will be taking the stage next week when the Kiwanis Junior Event at Silver Lake Golf Course will include 36 holes of stroke play in several divisions on July 5th and 6th.

Junior players will continue with the JODY’S Junior Classic qualifying round at the Lake course on July 11 and then enter into two rounds of match play on

Junior players will get a rest while the best amateur players on Staten Island will kick off the Staten Island Amateur championship with the first of two 18hole rounds of qualifying, also at Silver Lake, on Saturday, July 15 and Sunday July 16.

Junior golf is back in the limelight on Tuesday, July 18th at the Richmond County Country Club when the 35th version of the Bob Lowney Junior Tournament will be played in three divisions including Boys senior division ( 1618 years of age); Boys junior (1415) and the Girls division (14-18).

IMPORTANT: Entry forms for the Lowney Junior are available at all courses as well as the Staten Island Golf Center and must be filed by July 8th with entry fee check of $25 payable to Staten Island Golf Association. Entry must be mailed to Mr. Skip Tellefsen at 779 Clove Rd. Staten Island, New York 10310. No late entries will be accepted.

The Staten Island Women’s Golf Association will stage its Annual Classic Event at LaTourette Golf Course on Friday July 21.

The Ladies will kick off the Staten

Island Women’s Amateur with qualifying rounds at Silver Lake and South Shore on the weekend of August 5 and 6. They will then move to LaTourette for the quarter-final matches on August 9th before concluding the championship at the Richmond County Country Club on the weekend of August 12 and 13.

CHIP-INS Rodney Stilwell, defending Staten Island Amateur Champion, seems to be rounding into form for the upcoming Amateur.

Playing in last Sunday’s game at the Lake he holed a gap wedge on the Par 4 fourth hole for an eagle 2 and added birdies at the 5th and 6th holes for an opening nine of 31. Unfortunately, the champ’s putter went “limp” on the closing nine finishing with 39 for 70 taking away all chances of a course record.

The Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame 7th Annual Golf Outing Reunion will take place today at the South Shore Golf Course followed by the Awards Dinner at LiGreci’s Staaten.

Reminder: The rained-out Curtis Alumni Golf event of June 6 has been rescheduled for the Silver Lake Golf Course on September 28.

REFLECTIONS OF A GREAT GAME

By the time you read this, Staten Island’s 2017 12 year old softball championship will be history. And, although we hope Snug Harbor is the reigning champ, win or lose, this team has made the North Shore proud. These girls won the District 24 championship as both 10s and 11s.

Not only are they exceptional athletes, they are the epitome of good sportsmanship and teamwork. Tuesday night’s game was as intense and as entertaining as any major league ball game.

As the sun went down at Staten Island little league Tuesday

night, the air turned markedly cooler. However, you would never know it from the beads of sweat that were forming on the foreheads of anxious spectators watching a 12 year old little league all-star softball game.

This was the first game in the District 24 championship series between South Shore Little League and Snug Harbor Little league. SS had previously beaten SH in a 2-1 extra inning game on Sunday. If they could do it again they would win the championship. The two time District 24 champions, SH, however, were not ready to go down without a fight.

Both SS pitcher Juliana Martin and SH pitcher Grace Perez pitched beautifully allowing only 5 hits between the two of them. There were also some great defensive plays that quickly added to the tension of the unfolding game.

After two scoreless innings, SS drew first blood on a rbi single in the 3rd

by Gianna Scotti to score Sophia Roloph. SH answered quickly in the bottom of the third when Olivia Scarpaci tagged up on an RBI sac fly by Kelly Baker. The tie was also short lived as SS were able to play some small ball in the top of the fourth and score a run on a squeeze play.

SH led off the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back walks.

After two strikeouts and another walk, Olivia Scarpaci smacked a bases loaded two strike single to left to score the tying and go ahead run. That would be enough for the victory but the drama wasn’t through as both SS and SH continued threatening runs with baserunners in the fifth and sixth.

The two teams met again Wednesday night for the final rubber match in the series. Given the way the first two games had gone, I’m sure there were plenty of nervous and sweating fans once again.

Summer Nuggets

With the print version of the NORTH SHORE LOCAL going on a summer vacation, it means yours truly has a lot of "nuggets" to put out there in the last column until September.

And we will be back when school is back in session. I'm having too much fun, and Grace Acquafredda and Kevin Boyle have put together too good a product, for this newspaper not to continue. So thanks to all who have supported the LOCAL and to all the readers who have taken the time to let me know they enjoy this column.

We are going to break down the "nuggets" by catagories.

MISSING NUGGETS: Last week, the "Talking Baseball" column was about the best I've ever seen on Staten Island and I left out a "no brainer." Anthony Varraro (Curtis HS, St. John's University and five-year major league player) deserves to be on the alltime Staten Island pitcher's list.

Sorry for the oversight, Anthony, sometimes senility sets in.

Two weeks ago, in the "Old School" column, I left out a few important examples of why I qualify.

I have a flip phone and will always have a flip phone, even though Verizon tells me I qualify for any smart phone in the store.

Here are places I never want to travel to. Mexico, France and California, especially California. Disney World is far better than Disney Land anyway, and I just don't want to spend time in a state that was solely responsible for giving Hillary the popular vote.

I think bike lanes are the dumbest idea ever.

YANKEES NUGGETS Now that reality has set in and the injuries are piling up, the Bronx Bombers have to be carried

to the playoffs by Judge, Sanchez and Didi. On the mound, they need CC to continue to fool Father Time and Pineda to wake up.

It would be nice if Greg Bird finally got healthy. I've already seen enough. Tyler Austin is not the first base answer.

Derek Jeter doesn't show up for Old Timers Day! Joe D, Mickey and Yogi always did and Whitey was there at 90! Stop being a jerk, "Captain".

My wife Pat, a Yankee fan, doesn't understand why "Buddy Holly" (AKA Tyler Clipper) is still on the team. "He stinks" is her quote and all I can say is "you're right, honey."

METS NUGGETS There is hope for the "Flushing Fools" after all and it was proven last weekend in San Francisco.

The Giants are horrible, the Phillies are worse and the Braves are almost as bad. Throw in the Padres and the National League has the four worst teams in baseball.

With that much dead wood to play, the Mets could actually be a wild-card team with a .500 record.

But that bullpen is sooooo bad .500 might be a reach.

Both Jay Bruce and Lucas Duda do not get the respect they deserve. Professional hitters and trade pieces if the Sandy Alderson decides to pull the plug.

Keith Hernandez is a better comic than Colbert, Fallon or Kimmel.

GIANTS AND JETS NUGGETS Giants look like a 10 or 11 win team that should make the playoffs IF Eli doesn't get hurt. God forbid if we actually ever see Gino Smith take a meaningful snap!

Odell Beckham and Brandon Marshall sounds good on paper, but a lot of very bad things could happen in the locker room.

The Jets go 4-12 and the GM, coach and ALL the horrible QBs are shown the door!

KNICKS AND NETS NUGGETS: Pray Phil Jackson finds some way to get rid of Carmelo.

An 18-year-old kid from France as the 6th pick! Really Phil! Way to thrill the fan base. Go back to sleep.

Brook Lopez has been released from basketball hell. Nine years of honest labor for the Nets and he was never recognized for what he was. An All-Star caliber center and a player who cared about his trade.

Come October, when I'm again offered those free Nets tickets, the answer will still be the same. No thanks.

RANGERS ISLANDERS AND DEVILS NUGGET: For all my hockey fans out there (I love hockey fans), through the draft and trades all three of our New York teams appear to have gotten younger, faster and better. The 2017-18 season is going to bring us three exciting playoff teams.
