SI Then: Mount Loretto

The Mount Loretto Unique Area comprises a 194-acre open space reserve and nature preserve, with another 49 acres underwater. It was sold to the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation by the Archdiocese of New York in 1999.

It was once the largest orphanage and the largest farm in New York State.

Mount Loretto was founded by Father John Christopher Drumgoole, who also founded the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin which helped poor and dispossessed children.

At age 9 Drumgoole himself emigrated to America from County Longford, Ireland. Later, as an Irish Catholic priest,

he witnessed first-hand the dire need of the thousands of homeless and orphaned children who lived on NYC’s streets after the Great Potato Famine and the Civil War. Feeling a rural setting would be more uplifting and healthy, fresh air and sunshine being good preventives to the then common tuberculosis and influenza, he purchased a farm, plus several adjacent lots, on Staten Island in the late 1880’s. It was named in honor of one of the nuns who worked at the mission.

The farm provided vocational training for the children. The orphanage housed nearly 2,000.

Both were completely self-sufficient and fiscally solvent. By 1964, it was the largest child care institution in the U.S. By 1994, it ended its foster-care service, and established a variety of community, recreational and educational programs on the campus.

But many today can still recall a relative who as a child once called Mount Loretto home.

A Great Time At The Fair

“St. Patrick is looking down upon us, and smiling!” said Jack King, looking out over the 19th Annual Staten Island Irish Fair on the grounds of Mount Loretto.

The fair was held on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10.

Indeed, thousands basked

in the bright sun as they enjoyed Irish music, traditional and otherwise, pipe and drum bands, singalongs, games, inflatable amusements, dancing, special presentations, and vendors with cold beer, hot food and chilled ices.

Tables were set up with all wares Irish and beyond, from kilts and caps to etched glass,

under a large tent. Raffles and information were also available from various community and charitable groups.

As SI Irish Fair chairman, King and 19 others organize the event each year on behalf of Columcille Cultural Center.

Columcille also honored 123rd Precinct Commander Kenneth Noonan and De-

tective Kevin Mannion with special public service awards.

Honored as ‘Colleen Queen’ was longtime Ladies AOH member Susan Mee. Martin Crimmons, longtime Men’s AOH member, was named ‘Chief Brehon’.

“Seeing the community come out and enjoy,” King said, “always makes it worth it!”

A Ferry For John Chipura

With two of the new Staten Island ferries named, one for Sgt. Michael Ollis, one for Sandy Ground, supporters are pushing to have the third named for John G. Chipura.

At the Staten Island Irish Fair last weekend, friends at the Richmond County Pipes and Drums tent were encouraging fairgoers to sign petitions to do just that.

Efforts at the Irish Fair and at the

Tottenville Community Day garnered 1,000 new signatures.

Family and friends have also circulated petitions and made them available online at bit.ly/JohnChipura and at Change.org. To date they have gathered 6,370 signatures.

Staten Islander Chipura lost his life in the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

But supporters noted that it is how he lived that makes him worthy of this ship-naming honor.

He joined SI Boy Scout Troop 21 as a child, rose through the ranks and, maintaining a lifelong commitment, served as an Assistant Scout Master.

Later joining the Marine Corps, Chipura was on active duty in Beirut, when the Marine barracks was blown up, killing 241 servicemen in 1983.

Chipura once reflected that, “We Marines are truly blessed. We get to enjoy the sweet taste of freedom, because we know its price.”

He later became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Iwo Jima Association and the Beirut Veterans

After his discharge, he joined the New York City Police Department. Starting as a patrolman, soon enough he started work in the Brooklyn South Narcotics Division.

Chipura was promoted to Detective in Brooklyn’s 72nd Precinct.

Transferring from the NYPD, he joined his brother Gerard as an FDNY firefighter, just as their father, Anthony, had been before them. At age 39, he was assigned to Engine Company 219 in Brooklyn, and was engaged to be married.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, he responded to the call for rescuers at Manhattan's Twin Towers. While scrambling to save others, Chipura ‘answered the final alarm’ when the towers came down.

“He was a man with a larger than life personality,” friends noted. “Any family and friends who knew John would tell you that aside from his other qualities, he was a giving, gregarious, friendly man who was most often looking out for others. They would tell you that bumping into him would

ensure a long conversation with many laughs, where often you could not resist John's infectious grin.”

After his death, his family started the John G. Chipura Foundation, which sponsors blood drives, charitable golf outings and other events to carry on his legacy. Their website explains, “John lost his life while he was trying to do what was quite natural to him, help others.

The scale of the amount of people he helped was never truly known until after he was gone. That was the character of John. He didn't talk about helping people; he just did it.”

Petitions will be given to Borough President James Oddo and Mayor Bill de Blasio as they consider names for the last of the new ferries, due to launch in 2019.

John Chipura’s family, his friends, fellow veterans, police officers, and firefighters and many others, are hoping one of them will bear his name on its hull as it clears the dock at St. George and heads out over the water to Manhattan.

As long as it is done with respect, why is it inappropriate to ask a student to explain the reasoning for his or her position? Without an educated and informed public there can be no democracy. This county faces a dismal future if we continue to run away from political discourse. ***** Governor Cuomo's scholarship program offering free college tuition to students attending CUNY and SUNY schools is now accepting applications from students whose families make up to $100,000 a year, which will be increased to $125,000 when the program is fully phased in in 2019.

Loose Cannon

THE KING OF SWING

Sports have always come fairly easy to me. Growing up in the seventies, that’s what we did. From the moment school let out, until the street lights came on, we were outside playing ball. On weekends and vacations, we were out there all day. Basketball, football, baseball, stickball, softball — I could always hold my own. When we were about thirteen, my good friend Gerry Hartie decided that we should try a different sport, one also involving a ball — a little white one. I will curse him for this forever. For a few years, we trudged up to LaTourette Golf Course, attempting to become golfers. We failed, miserably.

The problem is I refuse to admit defeat. I have hacked my way around courses for forty years; still, I continue my quest for the most elusive prize of all — a decent golf game.

Enter Pete Meurer. If you know anything about Staten Island Golf you know about Pete. I had decided, at the tender age of fifty-something, that lessons might be just the ticket for my golf redemption.

Who better to instruct me than one of The Rock’s all-time greats? Surely he would have me sweetly and consistently crushing that wretched orb two-hundred and fifty, right down the middle.

Pete Meurer is a North Shore kid, who first learned to play sneaking on to Silver Lake Golf Course when he was twelve years old. He fell in love with the game, playing constantly. He became quite good. So good, that in the early eighties

he began competing in the local tournaments. After joining the FDNY, Pete still found the time to play and practice, continuing to hone his craft. In 1988, he won his first Staten Island Classic. This was followed by twelve more Classic titles, including a remarkable run of ten in a row from 1992-2002.

Pete said that his personal bugaboo was the Staten Island Amateur. “I just couldn’t win it!” Finally, in 2000, after quite a few failed attempts, he bested Bob Britton on the final hole to capture his first Amateur title. What was the difference?

“I finally learned to relax.” He went on to win four more.

Pete turned pro, and spent three years playing the mini-tour down in Florida. A period he describes as, “not very successful.” “I turned pro at fifty, the guys I was playing against were not only really good, they were also young.”

He came back to Staten Island and began teaching. This wasn’t his first stint as a teacher. From 1988 to 1996, Pete was the head golf coach at St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, a D1 program that he kept filling with Staten Island kids. Pete can now be found giving lessons at the Staten Island Golf Center (SIGC). He has taught thousands over the years, “I’ve been teaching twelve years. I get great satisfaction when one of my students goes on to play at a high level. But I also love it when an average or poor player suddenly ‘gets it’ and improves dramatically.”

I hooked up with Pete through an old hoops nemesis, Tom Feeney, who owns SIGC. I took a lesson last year — it was amazing! Pete was wrestling me for the club as he tried to get me to relax and loosen up.

He chain-smoked cigarettes and drank Coke like he was going to the chair. By the end of the session, I was hitting my nine iron 140 yards, straight and true. Unfortunately, my one lesson didn’t carry over to

the real course, where I was my usual inconsistent, slice hitting self. This year is going to be different. I’m going to see Pete as often as my wallet will allow and I’m going to practice. Yesterday, he was again wrestling me for the club, while explaining my slice. It’s not my swing path, it’s my open club face — eureka! I noticed there were no cigarettes, and he told me he quit. Five heart stents, put in last November, helped him make up his mind. I congratulated him, and we talked about how much better he feels since

the procedure. We also talked about golf and athletes. Pete said, “Guys that are good athletes are often the most difficult students. They try to overpower the ball. It’s not about power. It’s a simple concept.

It’s a swing.”

Pete told me that I could be fixed. I thanked him, and made another appointment for Tuesday. As I drove home, Duke Ellington kept playing in my head. “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.”

Yeah, Duke, I know — Pete and I are working on it!

THE LOCAL KID

Block parties. Where kids run around soaking wet from the blow up waterslides and the smell of barbeque travels down the block. Now imagine a block party times 10. A block party full of people you don’t know, and that stretches almost four blocks in the greatest city in the world. And did I mention the clouds of smoke from the constantly cooking barbecues? Welcome to Big Apple Barbeque, where plenty of world famous pitmasters come to NYC to cook some authentic BBQ for some hungry New Yorkers.

Although New York is a food hotspot, not many restaurants produce mouthwatering barbeque that compares to brisket from Alabama or ribs from North Carolina. However, Big Apple Barbeque brought authentic BBQ to Manhattan.

New Yorkers got a taste of real barbeque. Being the food fans we are, my dad and I made our way to 21st Street on a super hot Sunday, and were ready to eat everything the eye could see. Though we tried many different takes on barbeque from all over the country, there are a few worth mentioning.

First was Blue Smoke. Located in New York, Blue Smoke

knows how to do brisket right.

Their brisket burnt ends were definitely something I would go into the city to eat again. Secondly, Big Bob Gibson’s Barbeque from Alabama had to be one of my favorites. Their pulled pork sandwich was like no other. We even met the pitmaster who we always see on TV. He was super sweet and didn’t mind that I was star struck. If I lived in Alabama, I would eat a strict diet of only pulled pork from Big Bob Gibson's. Finally, words fail when it comes to explaining Martin’s Barbeque.

I’m eager to visit Nashville this summer and eat from Martin’s once again! Sadly we didn’t get to try favorites like Salt Lick and Hometown Barbeque. But after eating so much, I didn’t mind.

Also, a sweet treat from the Original Fried Pie Shop topped off the day.

My love for barbeque and all food in general is because of my dad. He not only takes me to food festivals, like this one, but broadway shows, the best trips, and all over Staten Island to eat at at instagram worthy restaurants. I cannot thank him enough for driving me absolutely everywhere and giving me the opportunity to try so many new things. Happy Father’s Day Ham!! Love you!!

The Beatrice Victor Senior Olympics has now opened applications to participate in their 2017 series of events.

Between Sunday, October 15, and Thursday, October 19, a cavalcade of sporting events for seniors will be taking place at various SI locations. Competitive events include table tennis, ballroom dancing (partner required!), swimming, predict-a-pace walk/ runs, bocce, scrabble, horseshoes, shuffleboard, cornhole, croquet, checkers, chess and pickleball.

They will also include basketball foul shooting, pinochle, darts, swimming, tennis, bridge, 8 ball pool, mahjong, golf, bowling, miniature golf, canasta and volleyball.

Events locations include the Jewish Community Center

on Manor Road, Clove Lakes Park, the YMCA on Broadway, the South Shore YMCA, South Beach boardwalk, the Greenbelt Recreation Center, Showplace and the Bridge Club on Manor Road. There will also be Senior Olympic games at the CSI-SI Community Tennis Center, Joe Broadway’s Billiards, La Tourette golf course, SI Fun Park and Rab’s Country Lanes.

BVSO co-chairperson Mary Ann Stallone told The Local, “We had 480 people last year, for 24 events. Some signed on for one event, some for all of them.”

Applications are due by September 30. Golf, volleyball and bocce registration must be in before September 23. All applications are $15 per person, with an additional $5 fee for bowling and $35 for golf.

I Work, You Work, We Work!!!

Back in the day, being the boss meant you had the biggest office in the firm. Over time companies realized that walls were keeping people apart, not allowing them to be collaborative and creative together, so they took down the walls. And thus, the modern open office cubicle structure was invented. Mike Bloomberg was the poster boy for this movement when as Mayor he had his desk in the middle of a space in City Hall with all his staff around him. But let’s be honest, those environments are hell to work in, aren’t as productive as they were made out to be, and really just saved the company space and money on offices.

Recently, a little experiment I got involved in started to take off, and my partners realized we could no longer afford to be virtual anymore and we decided to get office space. Having been out of the work world

for a while, we weren’t sure where to look. We had been at a couple of meetings at a site called We Works, which we thought was cool. This company was only formed in 2010, a few short years after the 2008 financial meltdown, but they are now a $16 billion company. What do they do, what is their product? Office space!

They gobbled up real estate very cheaply after the financial crisis, reconfigured the space and put up glass dividers. You can rent 1 desk space, 2 desks, 4 desks, whatever you want.

They have conference rooms, and “phone booth” type spaces for meetings and phone calls. They have a common area that has coffee, tea and get this – free beer! And it’s all very affordable and easy and – well, kinda cool.

So, because we work in the financial markets we got space at a downtown location, one of over thirty locations in NYC. But get this, they have them all

over the U.S., and by the way you can go use any of the conference spaces for a nominal fee. It’s like being in an exclusive club! Our location is overwhelming- it’s the old Goldman Sachs building on Broad Street, with Stone Street pubs literally out the back door. We now sit in our space looking out from the same vantage point that those Masters of the World once did: Goldman Sachs!

And the space attracts young, hip entrepreneurs who are starting their own businesses. It’s like a beehive or incubator for ideas and collaboration. It freaks me out a little to be coming up the elevator next to a kid about 20 years old with ripped jeans and a tee shirt and skateboard who might be the next Mark Zuckerberg (he’s the Facebook guy, btw).

Of course we refer to our little part of this environment as the “geriatric ward” and look

for our medications to be dispersed around 2 pm daily, but it is still fun. One downside to this arrangement was the unhappy discovery by my son, while starting his new job one bright Monday morning, that he now works in the same building again as his father.

Some kids have no luck!

In addition, rather than collaborate with my partners by phone in my pajamas, denying that their phone call actually woke me up at 10 a.m., I now find myself face to face with them in an office. As they are younger than me, this is tougher on them than me. But the free beer in the morning does round out the edges a bit.

So I have discovered that this is now how the world works.

I spent way too much time in one building during my career.

The future is here. Now all I have to do is learn how to text with my thumbs! A new beginning, now let’s get to work.

MUSINGS OF A MILLENNIAL

So, I officially feel old.

That is probably a very sad thing to say considering I just recently turned 21, but there is no other way to describe it, no way to sugar coat it. I returned home from college for the summer and suddenly I felt ancient. Shortly after celebrating my 21st birthday, I received that coveted new driver’s license that no longer announces to the world that you are “Under 21.” Many of my friends graduated college this year and far too many moved on to the terrifying real world of jobs and business suits. (I think I am cringing more at the idea of wearing a business suit than of getting older). None of these things, however, was responsible for me feeling that my youth was a thing of the past. What really made me feel old was how quickly things change when you’re away from home.

As the oldest sibling of three and the only one in college, it is easy to forget the others have many things going on in their lives and are growing up and changing too. It’s easy to remove yourself while you’re gone. After all, “out of sight, out of mind.” But this year I finally noticed it. That’s what made me feel so old, not that my friends and I were getting older and changing, but the changes going on at home.

As we grow up, we tend to laugh at the stories every parent tells that begin with “When I was a kid….” We dread what comes next, “When I was a kid we walked to school barefoot in the snow” (and as my dad would add, it was uphill both ways).

Kids roll their eyes at the extremely exaggerated stories, but things considered to be the norm really do change.

I came home from school for the summer, and realized that subtle, things had changed.

Talking to my brother one day he turned to me and said “do I look ahkie?” I definitely spelled the word wrong because I have never heard it before. Clearly looking confused, he informed me that it meant muscular. How could I not know that right? Apparently only very out of the loop people wouldn’t have known what the word meant. Now, not only did I feel old for not knowing the word but also for wondering when my barely 14 year old brother became concerned about his muscles.

I also came home to find that teenagers apparently casually Uber around Staten Island. When did this become the thing to do? I wasn’t in high school that long ago, but back then we eagerly awaited the day we would get our licenses. We saw that coveted card as our ticket to freedom and independence. For me, Uber is relatively new and occasionally used at school, so

I was shocked to come home to my sister often exclaiming “I don’t need a ride, I’ll call an Uber.”

No matter how you slice it, coming home from college for break always feels a bit unnatural and takes a lot of getting used to. I probably should have mastered it by my third summer. Nevertheless, it is definitely a hard reality to realize that I’m not the only one getting older.

So, everyone stop growing up please.

STATEN ISLAND REMEMBERS CEREMONY SI photographer Flint Gennari captured this moment as police officials, family and friends, elected officials and community members paid tribute to Staten Island’s fallen officers.

The 3rd annual Staten Island Remembers was held on Saturday, June 10, at the 121st Precinct on Richmond Avenue in Graniteville.

In his remarks Precinct Commander Deputy Inspector Matthew Harrington noted that he day was “about reflection and gratitude."

"We'll always be there for you," he said.

Stretching back to 1922, the names of Staten Island’s 27 po-

lice officers lost in the line of duty were read individually. A bell was sounded after each, followed by a moment of silence.

An NYPD helicopter flying over also paid tribute to them.

DA McMahon later noted he was “proud to stand with the families of our fallen officers today to honor their sacrifice.”

Staten Island Remembers was founded and is organized by Bob Cutrona, Sal Sottile, Jerry Amerosi and Marlene Markoe-Boyd, all community and business leaders.

It was started after NYPD officers Wienjan Liu and Rafael Ramos were ambushed in their patrol car three years ago.

On Thursday, July 20, there will be free thyroid cancer nodule screenings from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Recent studies show thyroid cancer is the fastest rising form of cancer in the U.S. It is also one of the top five cancers contracted by 9/11 first responders.

Screenings will be done at Borough Hall, 10 Richmond Terrace, Room 125. They are provided by HeartScan Services and Borough President James Oddo.

Partnering For SI Wellness More than 60 groups have joined together to tackle a major problem affecting Staten Island’s children.

According to the Staten Island Child Wellness Initiative (CWI), “A staggering 38.9 percent of Staten Island students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are classified as either overweight or obese.”

In adulthood, this can lead to increased incidence of

heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and some cancers.

On Wednesday, June 7, CWI hosted an event at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex to launch the new coalition and generate awareness about the problem.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Dr. Abigail Velikov and Deputy Mayor Dr. Herminia Palacio spoke from a medical standpoint about obesity and its side effects.

Meghan Rossi, co-founder and chief operations officer of Moral Kings discussed the importance of partnerships with parents and businesses to combat the problem.

Borough President James Oddo praised the new initiative and reasserted its value in his closing remarks.

According to organizers,

“The idea was generated out of a series of meetings of BP Oddo’s Health and Wellness Advisory Council when participants engaged in spirited discussions about how they could have the greatest impact on Staten Island’s health needs, particularly with young people.”

The Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness, a partnership between Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital, working with the BP’s office, is leading and coordinating the new initiative.

At present 29 states plus Washington, DC have approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes while overall attitudes towards marijuana have become more permissive. There is increasing evidence for the use of marijuana in treating pain and spasticity, plus there is evidence for its use in treating nausea caused by chemotherapy. There is even a website that touts the use of marijuana to treat nausea caused by pregnancy, which just goes to show that much information on many websites cannot be trusted, especially from .com websites.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that women who are pregnant, likely

to become pregnant, or are at an age where they can become pregnant should not use marijuana or any products containing THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. This recommendation is based on studies that have linked marijuana use during pregnancy to anemia, low birth weight, and the higher likelihood of the newborn requiring a neonatal ICU stay.

In addition, marijuana has been linked to defects in fetal neurodevelopment with children born to marijuana users having impaired higher-order brain executive functions like impulse control, visual memory, and attention during the school years.

present in early fetal development of the central nervous system. This system first appears at 8 days after gestation, aka conception. At 8 days after conception most women do not even realize that they are pregnant. THC directly impedes the functioning of the endocannabinoid system. The fetus is most susceptible to interference from outside toxins like drugs and alcohol during his or her first trimester of life.

Surveys have shown that between 2002 and 2014 the rate of women who admitted using marijuana during pregnancy rose from 2 to 4 percent, and that is probably a low estimate as many women may not want to admit they used drugs during pregnancy.

In the 1970s and 80s most pot contained about 4 percent THC whereas today’s pot contains about 12 percent. Products like K2 and Spice may contain 40 or more percent.

Studies in mice showed brain,

eye, and facial disfigurement (cleft palate) in mouse fetuses exposed to cannabinoids at day 8 of gestation (the 8th day of mouse gestation is roughly equivalent to the third or fourth week of human embryonic development), and the percentage of birth defects rose as the cannabinoid dose increased.

A recent study done at Columbia University showed that use of marijuana during pregnancy is on the rise. They found that the rate of women who admitted using marijuana during pregnancy rose by 62 percent between 2002 and 2014. Further work needs to be done in this area but it is clear that marijuana use among women of reproductive age is rising which may lead to a rise in birth defects. Women in this age group need to be more aware of the risks of the use of this drug.

Side View Mirror Wipers Continuing with my previously stated willingness to plagiarize virtually any good idea, today I turn to my underappreciated middle child, Erin. Having recently completed the cringe inducing teenage ritual known as driver’s ed, Erin’s been thinking a lot about what could help her change lanes and parallel park without eventually having to explain to me how that huge dent got into the passenger side door. Her idea: wipers for side view mirrors.

I know these automotive afterthoughts have improved a great deal over the last few years.

Many have gotten heaters, and most are able to be adjusted from a driver’s side switch (I’ve completed more than a few pretzel yoga stretches across the front seat to the passenger side mirror, while sitting at red lights in

my older jalopies). And apparently some models of cars have side mirror wipers already. The point is ALL cars should have them. Have you ever tried to back into a parking space on a rainy night?

Pure guesswork. You glide back slowly waiting for the first contact with something hard, then head in the other direction. Wipers would give you a fighting chance to look like you’d actually passed your driver’s test before the 5th try. I’ll bet there’s not a driver out there who hasn’t used their fingertips to wipe down an uncooperative side view mirror in a rain storm.

It reminds me of trying to keep the bathroom mirror clear enough to shave. Now there’s an idea! Wipers for the bathroom mirror! My next column is starting to write itself…

Red Shoes And Spoken Words The Staten Island Creative Community hosts a free film this week and a spoken word ‘road trip’ this weekend.

At their Art on the Terrace Gallery, 776 Richmond Terrace, they’re hosting a free screening of The Red Shoes on Thursday, June 15, 7 p.m. The 1948 drama, based on a story by Hans Christian Anderson, tells the tale of an up and coming ballerina who must choose between the love of

a young composer and the artistic demands of the ballet company’s impresario.

Roger Ebert calls it “the most popular movie ever made about the ballet, and one of the most enigmatic movies about anything.”

On Saturday, June 17, from 2 to 5 p.m., SICC will bring a touch of SI’s spoken word talent to Brooklyn. Poets and writers will be reading their works with members of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition at BWAC’s 499 Van Brunt Street galleries.

“Portraits in Poetry and Prose” readers will include Druanne Dillon, Brandon Korosh, Fritz Weiss, Thomas Fucaloro, Robin Lampman, Grayson Manzi, Maha Awad, Terry Marks, Annie Rech, and Ekhlas Fayig.

Original music by Staten Island band Allergic to B’s will follow the readings.

Here is a recent post. ***** Last week, Mayor de Blasio and the City Council agreed on a budget that will bring tens of millions of dollars to the North Shore. I will be sharing more about this budget in the coming weeks, but here is a brief snapshot: • $17 million to save Goodhue Park. This is a victory for open space, and a victory for Staten Island youth.

Whether you rallied with us at Goodhue, spoke out on social media, or sent letters to the mayor, I thank you for standing with me.

• $12.5 million toward a new emergency department at Richmond University Medical Center. In the absence of a city hospital on Staten Island, our health care system has been severely underfunded for decades. With this budget, we take a significant step toward reversing that and providing Staten Islanders with the state-ofthe-art health care facility

we need and deserve.

Closing a property tax loophole for our veterans. My Staten Island colleagues and I introduced legislation aimed to close this loophole and alleviate the property tax bills of veteran homeowners in our city.

For the city, the fiscal impact of this allocation is negligible— tiny when measured against the incredible sacrifices made by our military personnel.

the enjoyment of public spaces, I joined Richmond Gardens, H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths and Staten Island Makerspace in unveiling Staten Island’s newest Little Free Library last Friday afternoon at Jersey and Pauw streets. The unveiling coincided with National Trails Day and was followed by a hike through Jones Woods, Goodhue and Allison Pond parks conducted by the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Spearheaded by H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths cofounders Heather Butts and Anthony Antonucci, this Little Free Library was built at Staten Island Makerspace with the help of H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths volunteers. Placed on Jersey Street in collaboration with Richmond Gardens’ property management company Vitus, the Little Free Library will house a collection of books for Staten Islanders to take and enjoy as they please. This initiative is community-supported, so those willing to share a book from their own collection are welcome to drop one off at the Little Free Library as well. ***** The 89-year-old Goethals

Bridge ceased operations at 10 p.m. Friday, June 9, while workers reconfigured access approach lanes so the new replacement Goethals Bridge could open in stages on Saturday and Sunday.

The Port Authority kept the Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing open through the weekend to provide alternate routes between Staten Island and New Jersey.

The first of the new Goethals Bridge’s twin spans will carry both westbound and eastbound traffic until the second span opens in 2018. At that point, eastbound and westbound traffic will be separated onto the two spans.

Titone Bill Protects Consumers & Patients By Increasing Arbitration Transparency & Fairness

Arbitration is a common practice in civil and contract disputes and when properly used, it can promote fair, expeditious, and economical resolutions. However, in most cases the authority to arbitrate depends on the prior agreements, and patients or consumers often do not realize what they have agreed to.

A contract of adhesion is a contract where the terms and conditions are set by one of the parties and the other party has little or no ability to negotiate more favorable terms. My bill (A7445) will protect against

contracts of adhesion as well as promote greater arbitration transparency. These types of contracts are very common and used in many transactions for services that New Yorkers cannot do without such as telephone, internet, nursing home and credit cards.

The bill will invalidate arbitration provisions in contracts in the event of personal injury or wrongful death.

Additionally, any written contract from a health care provider limiting personal injury or wrongful death legal rights requiring people to sign as a prerequisite to providing service, shall be regarded

as a contract of adhesion and deemed unconscionable, entered into by the person under duress, and prohibited as against the State’s public policy. This new law will protect some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers from predatory behavior and from being compelled to arbitrate against their wishes.

Under current law, arbitrators are not always required to disclose the rationale for their judgments, despite the importance of consumers, employees, patients, etc. knowing the basis for rulings in hearings in which they have participated.

My legislation will require ar-

bitrators deciding consumer or employment-related matters to state the issues in dispute, as well as their findings and conclusions. Arbitrators will also be a required to render and deliver their decisions by agreed upon or default dates, and explain their findings and conclusions for each decision.

Day Of The Dad shepherd, Joseph was just hoping his kid would get in the carpenter’s union. And you know what else, he was probably hoping his kid would be a nice person and do unto others.

Imagine the conversations with other dads. Yo Joe, your kid can walk on water. He’s really made the big time. You must be so proud. I’m guessing Joseph would’ve just nodded and said he was most proud of his son being a good person.

SOARING NOTES AT RICHMONDTOWN LIBRARY

The Riverside Opera Company will be hitting the high notes in a free performance this Saturday, June 17, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the New York Public Library’s Richmondtown Branch.

The Company is based in Staten Island, and performs full and semi-staged operatic productions, often with a full orchestra conducted by maestro Alan Aurelia.

Founded in 1996, it is the only non-profit 501c3 professional opera company on Staten Island.

Riverside’s performers are chosen from the best vocalists who try out at their New York City open public auditions.

What’s a good dad? It’s something we with kids want to be. But there’s no way to know for sure if you’ve managed it.

Sometimes a father’s love means working 50 weeks a year and providing for the family leaving precious little time for ball or dance recitals. Sometimes a father can’t express his love and just hopes his kids sense it. Sometimes it’s remembering kids have their own lives and you should butt out.

I’ve heard it said that the best a father can do is provide things – advice, opportunity, setting example, etc. -- so that his children can become better than him. That doesn’t mean the kids have to have more. It means you just want your kids to be better than you. More loving. More generous. More understanding. Better.

It ain’t easy, dads. But it’s your most important job. That’s why there’s a day for you. So here’s to all who try. I bet Saint Joseph doesn’t mind sharing the day. Happy Father’s Day.

Soprano-mezzo Iris Prcic, debuted with Riverside Opera Company this past March, and has sung in several concerts including their annual PoPera 2017 with the Richmond County Orchestra.

Other performers include pianists Corey Everly and Faith Esham, and Isabel Brushi on violin, Brian Moses on piano and Kristian Marino, on trumpet.

I had to look it up. Father’s Day has been celebrated since the 1500s. I figured it was a Hallmark invention or Macy’s gimmick so kids would buy more ties for dear old dad. But, little did I know, it was tied in with the Feast of Saint Joseph. Yea, Joseph, Big Joe, the dad of dads.

REPAIRING YOUR BAR-B-QUE

A reader wrote in asking how to repair her Bar-B-Que. Ok, so here goes. Be sure the grill is cool and gas is off when working on it.

Removing the grate: I’ve seen sites telling people to use tongs. I disagree. With the grill cold, lift it out carefully while wearing rubber gloves.

You can use tongs to lift one end (if needed) to get a hold of it. Replace if needed.

Remove heat plates and coal: Take them out and place on a piece of newspaper. Replace as needed.

Remove burner assembly:

This is where it starts to differ. Most burner assemblies gently lift out. I have seen some that are secured in by a screw.

If there is a screw, be gentle unscrewing it out. The combination of heat and carbon will make them fragile. If any signs of pitting or wear, replace the burner assembly.

Igniter: If the igniter is not visible, you can check it using a handheld mirror. If you see a spark, it is good. If not, try cleaning it with a little sandpaper before replacing it.

Note: Should any of the above parts need to be replaced, new parts are installed by reversing the removal process.

Check the parts in the order are they written above.

Painting your grill: If your grill needs to be painted, first clean it thoroughly using a good degreaser.

Grilled Caribbean Spiced Pork Tenderloin with Peach Salsa

Serves: 4 Ingredients: ¼ cup chopped peeled fresh peaches 1 small sweet red pepper, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, minced 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon Caribbean Jerk seasoning 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed ½ teaspoon seasoned salt 1 pork tenderloin (1 pound) Directions: In a small bowl, combine first nine ingredients; set aside. In another small bowl, combine the oil, brown sugar, jerk seasoning, thyme, rosemary and seasoned salt. Rub over pork. Grill, covered, over medium heat for 9-11 minutes on each side or until temperature reads 145 degrees.

Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with salsa.

Comedy: Timeless And Free

It has been retold as a Spike Lee urban film, basketball based Broadway musical, a radio drama, worldwide peace project, a dramatic Swedish film, a Western comedy and more.

It may have debuted in 411 BCE, but the laugh out loud comedy and pointed satire of “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes still connects with modern audiences.

It is also about to get the start treatment from the island’s own Staten Island Shakespeare Theatre Company. They will be performing the work on Saturday and Sunday, June 17,18, 24,25 at 2 p.m. on the steps of the Staten Island Museum. All performances are free and open to the public.

Another Successful Season for Staten Island's 9/11 Flag Football League

Thanks to 9/11 Sports, Staten Island families can experience the thrill of football season all year long. The organization held its final flag football games of the spring season last week, and it was evident by the level of play that the players must have worked very hard during the season in the hopes of winning a championship.

The 9/11 organization began in the fall of 2006. The founder, Mike Fidanza, chose the name as a way to remember those who lost their lives in 2001. Its goal was not only to provide kids with a great experience playing a sport that they love, but also to give back to the community. For example, the League partners with Project Homefront to donate food and

supplies to local men, women and dogs fighting overseas.

Recently, the league dedicated their opening day games to the fight against breast cancer.

Flag Football is non-contact, which provides a safer experience for the players. However, making sure there are no serious injuries is only part of the 9/11 League's purpose.

Through the League’s rules, players are taught the physical and mental skills needed to play football, such as footwork, how to properly catch and throw, and overall good sportsmanship. Along with teaching the game to young players, the League wants their players, coaches, and families, to have fun and enjoy the ex-

Ever since the organization began, it has grown in popularity. Boys and girls can play starting in first grade all the way up to high school. There is even a league for adults who want to compete. Regardless of age,every player in a 9/11 league enjoys competing. As both a player and a coach, I have experienced this first hand.

Although the spring flag football season is over, athletes will not have to look far for more opportunities to play sports.

The 9/11 Organization also offers flag football leagues during the fall and winter, a non-contact lacrosse league and clinics for those who want to learn the sport. Also in the works for this summer and fall is a baseball league for kids six and under.

Patrick C. O’Shea

Patrick C. O’Shea, 81, passed away peacefully in Naples, Florida.

Born in Staten Island, New York, Patrick graduated from McKee High School. He worked as a Master Electrician until his retirement in 1998.

Patrick is survived by his loving companion, Colleen Henry.

“He was a sweet man”, Colleen said. “He will be truly missed”. Patrick enjoyed watching rugby, football and playing cards with his friends on Friday nights.

GOLF NOTES

By Tom Flannagan This is a big weekend for local competitive golfers that includes three straight days of beating the ball over the fairways of the three public courses in a bid to win or finish well in one or more divisions. It’s called the Steve Zuntag Classic (formerly the Staten Island Classic) and the tournament has drawn more than 80 entrants.

When the tournament began in 1969 there were just two divisions that included a gross division for scratch players and a second section for those who played with an official MGA handicap.

The current field will kick off the opening round tomorrow morning at the LaTourette Golf Course with players in the Men’s net and gross divisions as well as older men opting for the senior divisions of net and gross. Many players have been entered in all or more than one section and paid the full entry fee of $175 for the 54-hole event. The action will switch to the South Shore course on Saturday where the Senior Net event will conclude after 36 holes. The remainder of the field will move to Silver Lake for the final round and four separate titles will be great Father’s Day gifts.

by Tom Flannagan LOOKING BACK I’m like a pack-rat when it comes to saving old news clips and usually it pays off. Since we’ve spent most of this life on or around the golf courses, we have a keen interest in golf history. We’re particularly fond of local golf history simply because we are old enough to have had contact and even played with the folks who have gone through Staten Island fairways. Saving the written words of Buddy Barnett, Mike and Steve Hyland, Ray Long, Andy Lagomarsino, Larry Miraldi and Dan Siani certainly hasn’t hurt when it comes to writing a golf column.

Barnett may get the nod as our favorite since we read his material as a teen and were always impressed with his talent both on the golf course and at the typewriter. His pattern was unique. He managed to not only play well, but after each Sunday round at the Lake course he’d share in the usual socializing with a few brews and some harmonizing at the 19th hole with friends. Before the night was over he would set up the old typewriter and bang out a lengthy column. He also collected all of the results from other clubs by telephone and added it to the column. It was always late in the evening

Enough copy to make up a full page of the Monday Staten Island Advance. Barnett was a good player with a single digit handicap. I will never forget playing him in a club match in my teen years and while he beat me handily, the written coverage by him certainly made me look like a winner.

He did a great deal to put Staten Island golf on the map and

tagged onto the winner. If you have been around the game long enough and up to date on the rules of the game, you’ll know exactly how to define a real “sandbagger”.

In the book “Golf Etiquette”

by Barbara Puett and Jim Apfelbaum and a forward by Tom Kite in 1992, the term is clearly defined.

Make Matchup Happen

I believe I'm "Old School" and my kids would call it "Ancient School."

How "Old School" am I? I still believe a Mickey Mantle at bat, ANY Mickey Mantle at bat, was the most exciting thing in sports.

That a Jerry West jump shot, super quick and off the dribble, was the sweetest thing I ever saw on a basketball court.

That 90 years later, Babe Ruth is still No. 1 in baseball and 60 years later Jim Brown is still No. 1 in football.

Nolan Ryan would strike out 20 a game now, and Wilt would eat any present-day NBA center for lunch.

Wayne Gretzky is, and will always be, The Great One. Elvis is THE KING, but Ricky Nelson was very underrated.

Anybody that puts The Rolling Stones in the same sentence as The Beatles is a musical moron.

I prefer my woman without tatoos or body piercing.

If you are a Catholic and your parents gave you a good head start in life, going to Mass isn't going to kill you.

Everybody should stand for our Anthem and Pledge with their hand over their hearts and those who don't, or won't, shouldn't be in the same room with me.

I love the military, cops, firemen, sanitation guys and dedicated teachers.

I really dislike bad sitcoms, corrupt politicians, comedians who can only be funny by being vulgar and people who drive cars with music blasting you can hear

You should get the picture by now so I'll get to the point of this whole column I would like to know who has the best high school baseball team in my neighborhood.

Monsignor Farrell is the CHSAA city champion. It was the second title in three years. The record was 24-1.

Great job coach Bob Mulligan. So there should be no argument, right?

But Tottenville played in the PSAL city championship game. That program has produced 11 PSAL championships under the guidance of the father-son Tom Tierney duo.

Both have the right, and credentials, to say they are the best. BUT, and this is a really big BUT, Farrell and Tottenville never play each other when it matters and have their ace pitches ready and rested.

In the "old' days (up until the late 70's), we knew who the best Island teams were in baseball. There was a thing called the STATEN ISLAND High School League and it was real simple.

Every school played every other school twice (CHSAA and PSAL) and in early June the best team was atop the standings.

My 1966 Farrell team won the SIHSL title. Curtis represented the Island in the citywide PSAL playoffs that

year, but the Warriors knew they couldn't claim to be champs of the neighborhood. We played them, beat them, end of story.

This "Old School" guy wants Farrell and Tottenville to play each other next year, and every year after that.

And play the game hard and with an ace on the mound.

You know it’s what the players want. Make it happen.

Nugent's Nuggets: **This was a Mid-March "nugget" and I quote "Come fantasy baseball time I'm all in on Aaron Judge." ** While on the subject of Judge, did you happen to see the story where they asked 14 major league scouts who had the brighter future, Judge or Mike Comforto.

It was a 7-7 split. The seven who said Comforto must have been NL scouts which might explain why that league is so bad. On Sunday, Comforto was pinch hit for with the bases loaded in the 9th inning. **This past weekend, the Mets beat a very bad Atlanta Braves team 3 out of 4. To hear Mets fans tell it, they are on their way back.

Flushing fools! **All the "Flushing fools" saw in Cepedes' first weekend back was his grand slam home run. What i saw was a baserunning blunder that cost the Mets a run and him watching that home run (and not running) when it cleared the fence by three feet! Then, he sat the next two games. Now he's hurt again. **As I'm sending this col-

Page 23 umn to my editor, it looks like no Phil Mickelson at the U.S. Open as he elects to go to his daughter's high school graduation instead.

The event loses some luster without him and I'm hoping rain delays get him there. **My U.S picks are Spieth, Kuchar and Sergio. **My Belmont selection, Looking At Lee, just crossed the finish line. **It's too big a sample size not to take the Colorado Rockies seriously. And when will the Chicago Cubs wake up from their post-Series sleepwalk? **I'm rooting for the Minnesota Twins. **What drugs are the Olympic committee members on?

They got rid of both baseball and softball for a while, but they have now approved 3-on-3 basketball! Stupid. **Proven once again this playoff season. The hardest championship to win in all of sports is the Stanley Cup and Penguins went back-toback. Awesome job. **Been to the Bin yet? The Bin 5 restaurant on Bay St. is worth a trip. You can thank me later. **Well we did it. Let a terrorist be honored in a NYC parade.

New low for the mayor and all who marched with the man. If City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito passed me in the street and said "Good Morning" my reply would be "No it isn't, you'e here." And while on the subject of bad politicians, how did somebody named Warren Wilhelm get to be Bill "Big Doof " de Blasio?
