Opening the door to Liberty Tavern at 382 Forest Avenue is like walking into a party.

The chatter of conversation, the booming sound of the jukebox, and the laughter of people having a good time are the first things that hit you.

Even on a recent Friday afternoon, the place was packed with friends catching drink and catching a up, a girls-afternoon out, and a large lively party for an office co-worker who’s getting married.

The bar and restaurant, done in dark wood, is spacious

enough to hold it all. Besides the well-stocked bar, which boasts 16 tap beers, local craft brews, and old favorites, there is a large second room suitable for parties or dinning and a raised area facing out to the avenue with additional tables.

Past the bar is ample standing room, with drink rails along the wall, where Liberty hosts darts tournaments every Tuesday. Go through the backdoor and you’ll find a large, sunny concrete backyard complete with wood picnic tables.

Liberty Tavern hosts a regular roster of DJ’s, cornhole and poker nights, and trivia nights with themes like Comic Book Movies, the Mean Girls movie, and The Office tv show.

The tavern also known for its live music, featuring bands every Friday and Saturday nights and acoustic performers every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Psychic On Staten Island

Marian T. Zinicola, born and raised in Westerleigh, describes herself in modest terms.

But many around Staten Island, across the country and around the world, know she also has a great gift. To many she is perhaps better known as “Marty the Psychic.”

Besides having one book out, Soul Bonding, and working on two others, she frequently does work with the NYPD on homicides and missing persons, conducts private readings by phone and in person, does group readings across the country and is booked up till 2021.

Amazingly, early on even she did not know she had the gift.

“Ironically my grandmother and her two sisters had the gifts I had,” she says. “It was kind of known, but kept hidden. My mother never told me I had the gift that she had.”

“I am a medium and a psychic,” she explains. “With a medium, messages are channeled through directly from the deceased. A psychic is more about seeing things, often in the future.”

“This all started when I was five,” Marty says, “with my brother’s passing.”

Stricken with polio, he was brought to the hospital one day and never came back.

When images and message began to come to her in dreams, the family ‘secret’ began to come out.

Marty is a licensed psychiatric social worker with a Master’s from Adelphi University and Master’s in Clinical Psychology and Social Psychology. She’s worked in NYC Family Court, Department of Probation, the NYC Board of Education and more. Working full-time, she also maintained a private therapy practice for more than two decades.

“I started doing readings 20 years ago. Before that I did just family, friends.

“But I got very, very sick and had to retire from being a Board of Ed social worker.”

Not too long afterward, two police officers came to her home because her son’s van was stolen. She says she just started to ‘read’ one of them, telling the officer she had family in the Bronx, and, by the way, the name on her badge was not her family name.

Soon she began using her abilities to aid the NYPD. “One time I got a phone call from two policemen. I said, I’ll tell you if I see anything. If I don’t see anything I won’t take the case.”

“You are on a bridge, I think it’s the Bayonne Bridge. If you are not standing on a bridge, looking down at a man with a cell phone on his ear, and he’s been mudered, then I’m not taking the case.”

They were dumbfounded.

After 9/11 she used her gift to connect grieving families to loved ones lost in the attack and bring closure.

Marty is also medically intuitive, like her grandmother. Meeting a man at a gathering, she suddenly told him, “This is your son, you need to change his doctor.”

“The kid was in the hospital.

He was dying. I blurted out a name, I don’t even know what it was. I wrote it out.”

“Later he got back to me. He said they changed doctors and his son was alive.”

Life with her husband, Joseph Piscitelli, and family can be cha-

otic when and wherever an urgent message from beyond has to get through.

But she feels it is all for the greater good, that her gift was passed on to her for a purpose.

“I truly say there are no coincidences in life,” Marty notes.

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Staten Island Academy: Service A Priority One of the many requirements to graduate from Staten Island Academy is to do service. All service is done immediately after final exams and must be completed to earn their diploma.

On Tuesday, June 6, SIA seniors had a chance to present a small portion of what they have been doing to the entire Upper School and faculty, within just the past two weeks.

Students had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic to work with Outreach 360 to serve locally.

Eleven students made the trip, accompanied by teachers Carmen Vicente-Quesada and Clay Wollney in late May. Trip Master, Class of 2017, explained that when they landed they were excited to be in a tropical paradise. A three-

hour bus trip took them to one of the Out Reach 360 compounds in Monte Cristi, one of the poorest providences in DR. They spent two days being prepped by Out Reach 360 personnel and then they were charged to teach English to children from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Cassandra Clifford'17 explained the importance of learning English, as tourism is the largest source of revenue for the country. She added that to enter into Dominican colleges speaking English is typically a requirement.

Another group, compromising 30 students, right here at home worked locally with Meals on Wheels, The Staten Island Children's Museum and the Sunrise of Staten Island Senior Residents.

Matt Pelosi '17 and Vincent Savino '17 gave the Tuesday presentation about Meals on Wheels. They expressed how most recipients of the meals were homebound seniors who were very happy to have

a conversation with the Academy students. They also noted that they felt some of them didn't have much contact with other people at all.

Julia Knobloch '17 and Alice Guberman '17 did a presentation on SIA service work with children at the Staten Island Children's Museum. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day they supported the museum’s work by assisting employees at the Museum with daily activities.

Class of 17’s Manhal Hussain presented for the Sunrise Senior Resident service project.

Hussain discussed the different types of care that Sunrise provided and how residents were separated by floors, depending on their needs. Students played a lot of board games with the senior residents and the residents even taught the Academy students a game. The students also did a little performance for the residents and the girls offered manicures to the ladies.

"They just seemed to enjoy our company, and love telling stories from their past, even the stories that seemed a bit far-fetched", he said.

Every group that presented to their fellow SI Academy students and faculty, said that they felt they were rewarded by having the opportunity to do this type of service.

Currently, the average express bus makes 27 stops before ever leaving Staten Island. The study also found that 83 percent of riders use the busiest 50 percent of stops and that underused stops slow trips and complicate routes. The MTA's plan includes rerouting some buses, eliminating underutilized stops and making more direct routes for more efficient commutes. BP Oddo is encouraging Staten Islanders to give their feedback, both online and at in-person forums, to ensure that their voices are heard. ***** Parking Pleasure at the Ballpark! As progress continues on the North Shore developments, the Staten Island Yankees are offering a less expensive, more convenient parking option for the 2017 season as the new parking garage is open for self-park.

The new parking garage, formerly the ballpark’s left field parking lot, will be available at an

all-time low price of $6 for 2017 Staten Island Yankees home games, even less than the lot’s regular commuter parking rate.

The garage can be accessed at the corner of Nicholas Street and Richmond Terrace, with the garage’s entrance located a mere 500 feet from Richmond County Bank Ballpark’s Hamilton Avenue Gate. The garage’s physical address is 155 Richmond Terrace, but 224 Richmond Terrace, the adjacent street corner, can be used for GPS reference. For those accessing the garage via Richmond Terrace, walk-out access to street level is located on the third level, one level up from the Nicholas Street entrance.

For handicap access to the garage, fans can enter via Jersey Street and use shuttles operated

by Impark that will transport riders to the ballpark’s main gates. ***** Run for a Cause. The inaugral SSG Michael Ollis Memorial 5K Run/Walk & Street Festival is slated for Sunday, June 11.

McMahon announced the arrest of Staten Islander William (Bill) Nelson, the former Procurement Director of the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office (RCDA). Nelson was arrested on charges of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, which charges a theft of RCDA property valued “over $50,000,” from 2006 to 2016.

These acts were confirmed following a six-month investigation by the Department of Investigation initiated at the request of District Attorney McMahon. ***** Good News for Goodhue.

Mayor de Blasio has added $11 million to the budget to purchase a parcel of land from the Children’s Aid Society to add to Goodhue Park and prevent it from being sold to developers.

Loose Cannon MICKEY BURNS: THE UPPER HAND

Ever since I’ve known Mickey Burns he has had the upper hand. While playing basketball at The Monsignor Farrell High School, I managed to compile a career O-fer against his McKee Seagull coached teams.

To this day, I still wake up in a cold sweat from the nightmare where Kenny Page drops 36 on my helpless head in the Island Championship game in 1977.

The following summer Mickey became my boss, hiring me as a

bartender at his club, Studio B. It was a clear case of “Hey this guy never leaves, let’s give him a job.” And now, forty years later, he is the producer and star of his own television show, while I’m a cub reporter for a minor metropolitan newspaper. Despite this disparity, when I contacted him to request an interview, he graciously agreed.

Mickey was both a football and baseball star at New Dorp High School, graduating in 1965. He attended Missouri Valley college, and graduated with a Master’s Degree. He accepted a teaching position at his high school alma mater, and was an assistant football coach under the legendary Sal Somma. After a few years at New Dorp, Mickey accepted a position at McKee High School, and after a year there, he became the varsity hoops coach. He still holds the Staten Island High School record for fastest coach to one hundred wins. A milestone,

which he wryly observed, “Had a lot to do with Kenny Page.”

Sitting in his office last week, I felt something nagging at me as we talked. I brushed it aside, and continued with the interview. Mickey was passionate about his two different careers.

He spent thirty years in the New York City school system as a teacher and a coach.

Like many teachers, he worked a second job on weekends and summer vacations. His first side job was as a singer in a wedding band. In the band, Mickey picked up a rudimentary knowledge of the sound board and sound systems. This knowledge came in handy when his friend Richie Murphy, who worked at Channel 5 News in Manhattan, finagled

him a job as a sound man at the station. Mickey recalled with a smile, “We were trying to figure out a way we could hit golf balls together during lunch hour. His idea was to get me a job!” Mickey remembered that his first job was

Grab your remote, set your reminder calendar or DVR, or head to the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, June 14.

Spectrum’s NY1 News is taking a deep dive into the Build it Back program and offering a forum to residents to talk about their experiences.

“Build it Broke,” airing at 8 p.m. will examine the program which they say, “has been plagued by building delays, soaring costs and communication issues since its inception in 2014.”

NYC Build it Back was created in the aftermath of 2012’s Hurricane Sandy. Funded by the Federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Bill, its mission was to repair, elevate, entirely rebuild or in some cases reimburse or buyout homeowners affected by the storm.

rinacci will host a report on their six-month investigation into “widespread problems in the city program, spending more than $1 billion helping Hurricane Sandy victims rebuild — two years after Mayor Bill de Blasio said the problems were addressed.”

Earlier she reported that “rebuilding projects are plagued by frustrating delays and shoddy workmanship.”

Many storm survivors and their homes are still in limbo, four and half years after Sandy, not knowing what is happening.

There’s a new face on the coaching bench at Wagner College.

Wagner College women's basketball head coach Heather Jacobs has tapped Tara Flynn as an assistant coach for the Seahawks.

Flynn not only knows her coaching, but also how to play the game. Formerly an assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology, she was also a standout player at Adelphi University.

At Adelphi, the Bayonne native tallied 493 points over 113 games played and helped lead their Panthers to a combined 84-37 record (69.4%) and four Northeast 10 (NE-10) Conference appearances.

Her playing career was highlight-

ed in her junior season of 2014-15 when the 5-6 guard helped steer the Panthers to the NE-10 title and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

She was also a two-year captain at Adelphi.

"We are excited to add Tara to the Wagner women's basketball family," said Jacobs, who was her coach at Adelphi. "As a player Tara was a great leader. She has a bright future in this profession."

Flynn was a member of the Northeast-10 Conference Academic Honor Roll in all eight semesters of her college career while earning her Bachelor of Science in Sport Management.

Flynn has served as a director of the United Basketball Camp in North Hunterdon, NJ, and served as both a Head and Assistant Coach with the United Basketball AAU team this year.

Sunday, June 3, was about winning, against possibly the most formidable of foes. Cancer.

Cancer Survivors Day, hosted by Staten Island University Hospital at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield, brought together friends, family, doctors, medical caregivers, special guests and those who have battled the disease.

The message of SIUH’s Annual Survivors Day Breakfast, organizers said, was one of hope and inspiration.

City Councilman Joe Borelli extended greetings from the podium. Deputy Borough President Ed Burke spoke about his own bouts with thyroid and prostate cancer.

But speaking about her two bouts with two different types of breast cancer, SIUH honoree Margie Lanigan sounded her own survival day message.

“Like my mom who won her battle to walk again after polio,” she said, “my strength is my three children”. Her speech was even more poignant in that her children recently lost their father to cancer.

Lanigan was diagnosed with her first breast cancer in 2006 and again in 2014 with a more aggressive form of the disease in the second breast. She puts cancer in the backseat as she raises her children, works her full-time job as manager of SIUH’s Regina McGinn, MD Education Center and coaches girls basketball at Moore High School.

Staten Island Then: South Beach

Seen in 1915, it is not hard to imagine when South Beach was a summer beach colony of bungalows and tents called Graham Beach.

It may have started as a small Dutch settlement in the 1600’s, but late 1800’s developers saw something bigger in this beachfront town’s future. Hotels, bathing pavilions, beer gardens, theaters, casinos, and carousels began springing up along the shoreline.

Ferries brought visitors from Manhattan, New Jersey and elsewhere and South Beach became the end of the line for the Staten Island Railway.

Not just down for the day, many Italian immigrants settled here and formed the backbone of the community.

However, a combination of fires, early water pollution and the Great Depression began to take their toll. By the 1970’s almost of its seaside glitter and glory was gone, all its amusements were closed.

Today it is still a beautiful place to enjoy the sun and the sand. But if you listen closely, you might just hear the carousel music of a different era drifting in on the waves.

Before air conditioning and tropical getaways, places like the 15-acre Happyland Amusement Park offered plenty to enjoy, with vaudeville and stage productions

Vitamin D

Every few years there is a new fad in medical testing. A while ago it was homocysteine then it was high-sensitivity CRP (C - reactive protein).

Lately Vitamin D testing is all the rage. Everyone, it seems, is ordering 25 hydroxy (OH) Vitamin D levels. But is there really a need to do Vitamin D screening on healthy patients?

Unnecessary screening can lead to vitamin supplements and other testing which raises the costs of health care.

Vitamin D is necessary for proper bone health. The most common source of Vitamin D is sunlight, but all reference levels and information about Vitamin D assume that there is no sun exposure as this assumption creates a common baseline. A few years ago, the

Institute of Medicine (IOM) came out with recommendations on Vitamin D Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) and Vitamin D levels.

The IOM report was in response to a number of studies that indicated that large swaths of North Americans were Vitamin D “deficient.”

The evidence that was cited was that many people in these studies had levels of 25OH Vitamin D that were below 20 (ng per ml) or that supplements of Vitamin D of 600 to 800 IU daily failed to raise the level above 20. In fact, the IOM estimated that a level below 20 was actually appropriate for most people. To add to the confusion many labs use a reference level for 25OH Vit D of 30, making anyone below 30 “deficient.”

fusion is that many people misinterpret the Vitamin D RDA of 600 IU for those from 1 to 70 years old and 800 IU for those over 70 to mean that these intake levels would correspond to a “normal” Vitamin D level.

A daily intake of 600 to 800 IU would actually correspond to a 25OH level of 20. However, the reality is that the large majority of the population (about 97.5 percent) has a Vitamin D requirement of 20 or less and about half of the population has a requirement of 16 or less.

Therefore, the IOM recommends that a normal, healthy person does not require any Vitamin D supplements because a 25OH level of 16 to 20 is perfectly normal for them.

Some people have risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency.

These risk factors include osteopenia, osteoporosis, malabsorption, the use of certain medications that may interfere with Vitamin D metabolism (like anti-seizure medica-

tions), and institutionalization (nursing home). People with risk factors should be screened and given Vitamin D supplementation where appropriate.

Most medical organizations recommend against Vitamin D screening for healthy individuals and against the use of Vitamin D supplements for healthy individuals. Those concerned about Vitamin D levels should choose foods that are fortified with Vitamin D (dairy products, cereals, etc.).

There’s no question our current express bus system is cumbersome and outdated. This new proposed framework, designed after months of collecting data and listening to the observations of the people who ride our bus-

They help ground the PB process locally and are responsible for implementing the process, including planning and carrying out neighborhood assemblies, project expos and voting events staffing events as presenters, or poll workers developing and implementing an outreach plan guiding and supporting the process by acting as a liaison between the city agencies, city council staff and the delegate committees.

It’s not something I ever strived to do. But somehow I’ve formed a circle of friends, men friends, who are clueless when it comes to fashion. They’ve never made – and never will – anybody’s Best Dressed List. Any time I see one of my friends in a suit I just assume he borrowed it.

Just last week a friend brought a suit on a hanger to a pick-up basketball run. He said he was moving and trying to give away the suit and said it cost $1500.

He got no takers though another guy told him he had overpaid by $1400. T-shirts and tank tops are standard wear this time of year.

with anything. Though, some guys might consider graduating to extra-large (bypassing large) because that medium t-shirt now looks like a bib and it makes people notice. That’s really the point of men’s fashion – at least the ones I know – and that’s not to be noticed.

It’s ok not to care what you’re wearing but don’t be so careless you draw attention to yourself – like wearing black socks with shorts. There was a family howl last week when I threw on some black socks and sneakers for a quick trip to the store.

You would have NEVER done that just a few years ago, the darling wife said in stunned astonishment. You would have been ALL OVER anybody who had the

nerve. You would’ve made fun of the European look.

Yea, but at least I’m not wearing a speedo or banana hammock, I retorted.

Not yet, she said. But this is how it starts.

Yea, but hipsters on skateboards, they wear black socks, too. She just shook her head and gave me the look that said: you’ve given up.

I think the opposite. Black socks mean I’m evolving, that a sense of style might yet develop.

And the thing is, what’s the alternative? White socks? White socks were the only choice for decades but those suckers are starting to look a little weird. I’ve noticed how old guys start pulling them up higher. I don’t want to be one of those guys yet. I don’t want to be wearing knee-high whites with sandals.

A few days after being told not to leave the house with black socks I had another fashion crisis. I was meeting someone in the city and put on a button shirt and dungarees (oops, I mean jeans, no one says dungarees anymore). The son who will remain

What? I gotta go into the city and – You dress like such a dad.

What am I supposed to do?

Forget it, he says. And walks off.

I call after him, what am I supposed to do?

He’s gone, no help. I look in the mirror. I don’t know what to do. I’ve been wearing dungarees since… well, my whole life.

Am I supposed to be wearing the same style of pants 40 years later? White socks are starting to scare me but dungarees – dunges – they still seem ok. Maybe he was talking about the shirt. It was short sleeved. That might be lame. Was I supposed to tuck it in or not?

I got on the ferry and everybody started talking about me but it wasn’t in English, so I didn’t care.

On the way home, I saw a couple of guys I know and they were in suit jackets. They looked miserable. I didn’t care that my shirt was tucked in. Nobody seemed to notice.

Mission accomplished.

Storage bin: To build a storage bin for your dominoes, you will need an additional 2, 8 foot lengths of 5/4 decking wood.

1- Cut 3, pieces of 42 inch lengths of decking wood.

2- Cut 2, pieces of 10 inch lengths of decking wood.

3- Nail 2 of the 42 inch pieces for the sides to the 10 inch pieces (as shown in the photo).

4- Nail the bottom piece in. You will have space, center it to allow for drainage (if left outside).

5- Stain and clearcoat (as you did with the dominoes).

Back yard dominoes can be fun for the whole family and can be a fun project to do with the kids.

This project can be made for less than $100 and rates as a 2 on my DIYer skill level (with 10 being the hardest).

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts -thin 4 garlic cloves, minced 4 tablespoons brown sugar 3 teaspoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup of cheese (I used shredded cheddar) Directions: Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a casserole dish with tin foil.

Lightly grease it.

In small sauté pan, sauté garlic with the oil until tender.

Remove from heat and stir in brown sugar & one teaspoon of salt.

Go for original Mac and Cheese, or with Buffalo Chicken or Pulled Pork.

The Liberty Burger is 7 oz. of hand-pressed beef with lettuce, tomato, bacon, onion rings, chipotle mayo and cheese. Or you can go for the Old Fashion Burger, Mushroom & Swiss, or chicken, beef or pulled pork Sliders.

Place chicken breasts in baking dish and cover with 3/4 of the garlic and brown sugar mixture.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.

Within the last 10 minutes, add your cheese on top then put the remaining brown sugar and garlic mixture on top of the cheese and let bake 10 minutes or until cheese is fully melted.

The outside is a thin dough crust, which is fried just enough to be crisp at the edges and soft in the middle.

Working part time at the station — while still teaching kids as his regular gig — Mickey learned the business. When Channel 5 was purchased by Rupert Murdoch and became Fox News, the staff was given bad news — no more overtime. To make ends meet, Mickey and a few of his friends at the station, formed their own production company. This eventually led to Time Warner picking up their show, Special Edition, in 1991. They needed a host, and since Mickey never shied from the spotlight, he jumped right in. This production dealt with Staten Island and various local issues. He later hosted “Staten Island Live” and “Island View” two shows that also dealt with primarily local issues.

His big break came when he formed Quest Media. Their first venture was a rehash of his old Special Edition show, with Mick-

Since I have never been accused of original thinking, I asked him that very same question. Mickey replied, “I would like to be remembered as a good person, an athlete, teacher, coach, and lastly, a television host who did his own research and successfully created quality conversation.”

Mickey, I think it’s safe to say, your legacy is assured.

As I got up to leave we shook hands, and it suddenly hit me what was bothering me. This guy has a decade on me, and yet, he still looks younger! Dammit, he still has the upper hand!

GOLF NOTES

One of the longest running golf tournaments in Staten Island history will get underway on Friday, June 16 at LaTourette golf Course.

Sure, you know we’re talking about the Classic.

This event has a long history that started back in 1969 by former Silver Lake member, Rick Colgan.

He was a member of the Lake in the late 1940s through the mid-60s when tournaments for the average recreational player were scarce.

Most events were built for the low handicap players who participated in USGA or MGA qualifying rounds in an attempt to get into a major.

Colgan, a fine player in his own right, felt it was time for something that would attract average handicap players like a net tournament.

In 1968 he made strides to hold a golf tournament on the municipal courses. The only prestigious event we had at the time was the

by Tom Flannagan Staten Island Amateur and that was designed for the scratch player. Colgan tried his best to sell this idea to the Department of Parks who operated the local courses at the time.

Of course this event would require tee times and that was a “nono” since all players were required to sign up and wait their turn for tee time. For all players it meant getting to the clubhouse at break of dawn or earlier to get your name down on the list. Since you anticipated a long (hours) wait, you either went back home or took a nap in your car. On Sunday, many golfers would sign up and then attend church with the hope that God would let them play well.

The plan was quickly turned down by the Department of Parks.

A determined Colgan went ahead and formed a committee of players from local clubs and in 1969 convinced the Parks Department

that this was the right thing to do.

A field of 60 players signed up and the tournament was launched with the opening round of the 54–hole event starting at the Lake on Saturday, South Shore on Sunday and the final round at LaTourette on the following Saturday.

Prizes were awarded in net and gross divisions and to the low five gross players. The tournament continued under the direction of Colgan and his friends until 1971 when it was turned over to the new revived Staten Island Golf Association headed by Steve Zuntag, Dennis Malenka, Skip Tellefsen and the brothers Ed and Al Sala.

Staten Island Classic Highlights * Since it always takes place in June, this tournament always involves “Father’s Day” and that doesn’t fit too well with some families. * The word “Classic” immediately is linked to Pete Meurer since he won that title on 13 occasions including 10 in succession. * Defending champion in both the Men’s Open and the Senior Open Division is Mike Marotta.

Pete DeFeo is the Men’s net champion and Tom O’Leary will be defending the Senior Net division title. * James Buttermark, with two wins, holds the 54-hole scoring record with 204 set in 2015 * Bob Britton won four times losing once on a DQ when he showed up late. * Ed Sorge proved to be the best “mudder” when he fired a blazing hot 66 at South Shore in 1984 when in a constant rain. * This event has always been plagued by bad weather. * Lou Buttermark Jr. also carries a “mud tag” in winning the 1990 version as did Anthony Fauci in winning in 1992. * The late Vic long elected to use a yellow ball to be different and took a penalty when he hit a wrong ball from a fairway. * Rodney Stilwell has earned the title on four occasions. * Mike Pszczola and Chris DeMenna are both two time winners. * Steve Zuntag once took a drop and his ball struck a PVC pipe causing a geyser at LaTourette.

While Steven Zuntag had played in every Classic until his passing in 2014, he never won. However, he was the person who led the rebuilding of the SIGA as well as the Staten Island Classic and the director of all local golf competition

Chips and Chops: Plenty of action at all courses with new clubs springing up during the week. Richard Conte, who is fairly new to the game discovered that you can get good breaks sometimes. When he played a match against Neil Haggerty in the Lake President’s Cup event he bounced an errant shot off a sprinkler head and tapped in an easy birdie to win.

How about Christa Golden, assistant manager at the LaTourette course and a former Staten Island Women’s Classic champion as well as a college golf star? She decided to break down barriers by playing in the popular 5:30 a.m. game against the guys at her home course.

That is now very close to reality and that would be one heck of an accomplishment in a sport where skill and dedication is a must. **Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer of all time and a good man. But when he says "Tiger Woods needs our help" I have to ask why? Cancer patients need our help. Sick babies need our help. Autistic children need our help. Tiger Woods is an arrogant jerk who never went out of his way for millions of his adoring fans. But he made a lot of money for PGA golfers, so the majority of them are on the "poor Tiger" bandwagon. **For a school that was close to closing, several times, Moore Catholic is certainly accomplishing a lot on the athletic fields.

State softball title the latest achievement, and why is anyone surprised when there is a Payne (coach Kevin Payne) running the show. **Growing up, this was prime stickball season for me, and every other Little League playing boy in the neighborhood. If we didn't have stickball, there would have been many a long day in June, July and August. I don't see ANY stickball around today, and that is this generation's loss. **Did you know 90% of Little League baseball and softball players are done for the year!

the regular season ends by June 1st to make way for All-Star practices (about 10% of players). Ridiculous. **And where do all those young baseball and softball players go now? Basketball camps and AAU travel tournaments where coaches and parents believe it is perfectly normal for a 10 or 11year old to play four games a day in a steamy hot gymnasium. Ridiculous. **CSI High School has itself a real winner in new varsity basketball coach Danny Lee. Give him just a real player or two each year and his coaching will take care of the rest. **Don't want to harp on the "old" days, but in the 50's and 60's it was common for the ace varsity pitcher to be the shortstop on days he didn't pitch, bat in the middle of the lineup, and be the point guard on the basketball team **When was the last time AAU or travel programs "developed" one of those guys, or girls? **Boy, was that an exciting French Open. Oh, you didn't watch. Nobody else did either. **Did you see that NBA commish Adam Silver is "frustrated" by the lack of Chinese players in his league. Really! **John Fodera's run as St. Peter's High School principal is over, but he stays on as President.

A very good thing for the school and the North Shore community. Same goes for the retiring Port Richmond principal Tim Gannon who will remain on in an advisory capacity for the Board of Education. **Bert Levinson celebrated his 85th birthday with former players from Curtis on Sunday at the Staaten. Great coach, terrific principal (IS 49) and a North Shore man all his life. **Staten Islander Rob Calabrese, Horizon League Player-ofthe-Year and second team NCAA All-American catcher, is about to become a very high draft pick, Rob is the son of Joe Calabrese,

manager of the most dominant team in Island sandlot baseball history, Brothers Pastry. **I'm calling out my West Brighton neighbors and friends.

Where were you for the Memorial Day parade? The parade route is the same as the St. Patrick's Day event and you all show up for that. Don't our veterans deserve your attention and attendance? Let's do a better job next year. Westerleigh needs to be there, too. **And did you know there are several members of Congress who are now refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance! All from the same party, of course.

Disgraceful. **Same issue. Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned and that puts a smile on my face. **Melania Trump is drop-dead gorgeous. You don't read that anywhere (I wonder why!), but it's the truth. And to all those designers who didn't want to "dress" her, give Hillary a call.

She needs help with those pantsuits! **Mike Trout has often been compared to Mickey Mantle.

Did you know The Mick was relatively injury free in his first five seasons? If you love baseball, let's hope Trout's first serious injury is his last. And shame on all

those Fantasy owners who celebrated his injury **I'm a channel "flipper."

Watching the Stanley Cup and NBA finals and the Mets and Yankees at the same time is no problem. But when the Yankees are home and it’s the bottom of the 7th inning, there is no "flipping" until I hear Kate Smith finish with "My home Sweet home." **I won't be going to the Puerto Rican Day parade. If you are, bad move, but say hello to Bill "Big Doof" de Blasio for me. **Kathy Griffin was never funny and now we know she is also dumb. Guess I must be one of "old white guys" she talked about.

Good riddance and take Bill Maher with you. **I've always liked my newspaper, but it's hard picking up the local daily and reading the Washington Post. **The purge of personnel at ESPN seems to have taken this tack. If you are loud, obnoxious and wrong most of the time (AKA Stephen A Smith), you stay. If you are a hard-working professional (AKA John Clayton), you go. **OK now we're freezing in June!
