Group Revives Music Of Yore

You might think the rich, textured vocal sound rising in the stillness of Trinity Lutheran Church is from another world.

But in actuality it is from another time. And the 20-person strong Voyces group, rehearsing in the church, is bringing it to life in the present day.

The Staten Island based vocal ensemble is scheduled for two upcoming concerts. One on Sunday, June 4, 4 p.m. at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, 131 East 10th Street. Admission is free.

The other is on Tuesday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 309 St. Paul's Avenue. Admission at the door is $20 for adults; but under 18 it’s free.

Voyces, which performs acapella, i.e. without instrumental backing, and also with skilled musicians, is dedicated to performing what is called

Early Music. That is, music composed before 1750.

“Voyces is an all-volunteer vocal ensemble,” says Artistic Director and founder Beth Johanning. “We have a cap of 20 members so it always remains an ensemble. So it always has that intimate feel.”

Voyces is made up of many levels of musical involvement, she says, but all members bring a high degree of musicianship.

“We have many who are professionals. We have a handful of retired music professionals and also educators. We did have a number of Episcopal priests at one time. And we have some college students— music majors. Then we have super talented church musicians.”

The all adult group ranges in age from 20 to 75. Together, they do three to five concerts per season. Some are standard

concerts, others come from invitations to bring their music to new places.

“We perform with musicians who are top of the line professionals in the Early Music field. When we do it, it involves a rather large orchestra, 16 people, which is large for a Baroque orchestra.”

Johanning, herself, was an opera singer by profession.

Returning from Germany after eight years in opera there, she took a job at a Staten Island high school. One duty was directing the choir.

She enjoyed it so much, that after leaving that job, she began calling up friends to get together informally to study and sing Early Music.

Members came from Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and SI. The idea of doing concerts took hold, and Voyces was born.

Years Of Pride: Ralph Vogel

There’s some pride in Ralph Vogel’s statement: “The more visibility we have, the more people will see people as people and family as family.”

The outgoing Executive Director of the Pride Center of Staten Island knows that from experience.

He came out of retirement seven years ago to head what would become a vital support center. “I moved to Staten Island in the mid1980’s. Before that I was a teacher in Pennsylvania,” he told The Local. At the time, the Staten Island AIDS Task Force was starting and few services were available.

“We were working with people who were HIV positive on the Island, working with outreach, education, and health services.” That effort grew into the Community Health Action (CHA) Staten Island organization.

Later, Vogel went to work for Ronald McDonald House, developing programs now used across the country.

He credits CHA’s Executive Director Diane Arneth for a great deal of the services and support now available to SI’s LGBTQ community. It was Arneth who saw the need for more.

When Vogel came out of retirement, it was to serve on a CHA advisory board for a new endeavor.

Working with CHA, four years ago Pride Center SI became its own independent non-profit organization.

“Staten Island doesn’t really have other services or even social groups. That’s not the reality here.

There is no other LGBTQ organization like this here. So we know we have a unique responsibility.

We try to reach out to our whole

community and not be isolated.”

Right in its own backyard, Pride Center offers a wide variety of services to the LGBTQ community.

Vogel runs through some of them.

“We have our in-house mental health counseling. GRRRL Power helps empower young women with relationships and finances.

We have free AIDS testing. There is also a Youth Drop In program after school on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

“We started a Golden Rainbow Club for gay seniors on Wednesday mornings, because many gay seniors on Staten Island are very isolated.”

They also organize dinners and gatherings and have formed inter-generational programs to introduce younger people to seniors and vice versa.

“We started the Love On A Leash therapy program where we certify volunteer teams of owners and dogs to be therapy animals.

“One of the areas we do a lot of work in is in information and referrals. We are really the hub for local information and specialized

places to go.”

Pride Center also provides a bereavement group, couples therapy and family counseling for parents of gay and lesbian children, and for parents of transgender children. They also do outreach to schools and colleges, and work with health service providers. “It’s about building relationships in the community,” Vogel said.

In the past seven years, he says, “so many things have happened which have impacted LGBTQ people. Well beyond what I could imagine. You can now serve your country openly. I am a Vietnam era veteran. People can get married to whom they love. Marriage rights, inheritance rights, non-discrimination rights, adoption rights. Discriminatory laws are falling by the wayside across the country.”

But, he says, there is anxiety about what is ahead. A fear that some of the gains will be taken away. “We need to do a lot of work for equal rights. But I think the more inclusive we can be the better off we are.”

Festival, Ferry And Arts This Saturday

Where and when can you find all of Staten Island’s creative arts this weekend?

Why, at the 10th Annual Art By The Ferry this Saturday, June 3, from 12 to 6 p.m. Organizers are finding new and creative ways to “celebrate Staten Island and its waterfront with artists, musicians, craftspeople, and writers sharing their unique talents.”

The festival itself will be taking place at Staten Island Creative Community's Art On The Terrace Gallery at 776 Richmond Terrace and at the Flagship Brewery at 40 Minthorne Street.

A variety of works and items created by Staten Island artists and artisans will be on view and often for sale. SICC’s ‘short list’ of what people will find includes, “paintings, photography, prints, graphic arts, performance/participation art (with a Haiku Writing Table and

Haiku Tree), fibre arts, sculpture, pottery, books by Staten Island Writers, Art By The Ferry t-shirts and posters, and SICC’s Literary Art Journal.”

There will also be hand-made in Staten Island jewelry, collages, notecards, organic soaps, organic body products, organic honey, hand-painted items for the home, mermaid art objects, mermaid tote bags and more.

No festival would be complete without food, drink and music. From 1 p.m. on, the Flagship Brewery will be hosting performances by Five Myles Utopia, The Snugs, Allergic To B’s, All Hands On Deck, Nick Titolo and House of Cadre. The Staten Island Shakespeare Theatre will perform at noon.

There will be a free shuttle service to and from the festival from the ferry terminal in St. George starting at noon.

Petty Cache ***** Despite awful weather, many spectators lined up along Forest Avenue to honor those who have died while serving in our armed forces. The parade was led by Grand Marshal Leon J. Wallace and was attended by many politicians including BP James Oddo, State Senator Diane Savino, Council members Debi Rose and Steve Matteo and Assemblyman Michael Cusick. ***** On Saturday, June 3 Christ Church in New Brighton, will host its annual Spring Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

The event will feature attic treasures, children’s games, a variety of local vendors, hot dogs and hamburgers, a lemonade stand, a bake table featuring homemade pies, pastries and cookies, raffle baskets, 50/50 and a car wash. The Fair is wheelchair accessible. Christ Church is located at 76 Franklin Avenue. For directions, or additional information, please contact the parish office at 718-727-6100 ***** The City Council unanimously voted to approve the land use application to buy the land of the former Victory Van warehouse at 357 Targee St. to build a new school to open in 2021. The Schools Construction Authority held its first public meeting on the plan in November. Residents at the meeting asked that the new space be a high school or use part of it as a site for the all-boys Eagle Academy that's running out of I.S. 49. The DOE said it will make that decision closer to its opening date. ***** Bill giveth and Bill taketh away.

After issuing 50,000 new parking placards to teachers and other school employees (when only 10,000 of such spaces exist), Mayor de Blasio last week stood in front of a Bronx school and warned school staff members and other employees that they better not misuse their parking placards or they may face serious conse-

quences, which can include fine, vehicle impoundment or placard forfeiture. The NYPD is creating a new unit and will hire 100 traffic enforcement agents to crack down on such public employee parking perps. ***** Hey soon to be fifth graders, are you up for a challenge? The Borough President’s new Summer Reading Challenge that is.

The office will supply all participating students with the same book. Over the summer, the challenge will be for the students to read the book and produce a cogent book report, to be submitted to the BP’s office in September. The Borough President has chosen Way of the Warrior Kid, written by former Navy SEAL and New York Times best-selling author Jocko Willink. There were two separate hit and run crashes on the North Shore over the Memorial Day weekend. A 37 year old mother of three was struck and seriously injured while taking her nephew out of the backseat of her car on Westervelt Avenue. Luckily, her quick actions saved the child from harm. The next day, a man was critically injured when he was struck while crossing the street at the corner of Frean and Targee in Stapleton. In April, a 13 year old boy broke both his legs as a result of a hit and run by a man fleeing the police at the intersection of Broadway and Henderson Avenue in West Brighton. ***** It's not our imagination. Temps are struggling to get to 60. We have now seen below-normal afternoon temperatures on 10 of the last 11 days.

There will be a Borough Hall Blood Drive to benefit the needs of patients at Staten Island University Hospital and Richmond University Medical Center on Tuesday, June 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Conference Room 125. Please take an hour out of your day for this worthy cause. ***** Governor Cuomo is giving Staten Island $151 million to build a multiuse seawall and elevated promenade along the East Shore of the Island. The structure will stretch for 7 miles, from Oakwood Beach to Fort Wadsworth and will reach 20 feet above sea level to protect against a storm at least the size of Hurricane Sandy.

Residents are to have input on the design. U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Congressman Dan Donovan, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Borough President James Oddo, and Minority Leader Steven Matteo sent a joint letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urging early collaboration on seawall-related flood insurance reductions to maximize potential savings for homeowners. ***** Study, Study, Study. Back in April, 2016, the MTA agreed to study the possibility of a light rail system connecting Staten Island to New Jersey and promised to complete the report no later than June, 2017. The MTA has only now allocated the funds ($4 million) to study the potential for a light rail that would carry commuters over the Bayonne Bridge and connect them with the New Jersey Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. This will not be the first study conducted on this.

Page 5 The MTA also performed studies in 2004 and 2009 assessing potential ridership and other issues. ***** Calling all student Artists. The Department of Sanitation, in collaboration with Pratt Industries and Borough President James Oddo invite students from PreK through 8th grade to enter an art contest that communicates “Don’t Litter, Recycle!” Ten semifinalists will be awarded four tickets each to attend the Staten Island Yankees game on June 26.

Eight finalists will each receive a $25 gift certificate. The winners will be announced at the game.

The two winners will each receive a $100 gift certificate and their artwork will also be displayed on Sanitation trucks across Staten Island. The artists' schools will each receive a $1,000 stipend. The submission deadline is June 9.

Loose Cannon

LONDON CALLING

We bid adieu to Paris and jumped back on the Eurostar heading to London. A French waiter told me that that the Eurostar has never had an accident, so I was somewhat more relaxed. After a little more than two hours we were back in London. We checked into the Haymarket Hotel, which may be a step down from the Mandarin Oriental, but a very small one. Located around the corner from Trafalgar Square, it is a beautifully appointed lodging.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with our English cousins. Unlike the French, I have met many English, and like everyone else, most were good and a few were not. I grew up five of six in a family where we were told early on that we were 75% Irish and 25% English. It wasn’t the proIRA — Up the Provos — type of environment that I had found with a few of my friends. The only Republican we were expected to be was the GOP. It wasn’t until I read Trinity by an American Jew named Leon Uris, that I began to understand what had happened to the Irish. This book inspired me to read more about Irish history and the British oppression. After doing this research, I was upset, even outraged, but like many of my life’s outrages,

I did little about it. I never sent money to the IRA, attended any meetings or marched in any parades. Instead, I just resented the hell out of the English.

My resentment however, did not extend to their artists. It is a safe bet that one of the biggest influences in my life has been Pete Townsend. The first album I ever purchased was in 1973, Quadrophenia, by The Who. I still listen to parts of it every single day. Whether that is dispositive of what a beautiful piece of music it is, or speaks directly to my lack of progression as a human being — I prefer to believe the former. I also love the “angry young men”— the British authors and playwrights of the fifties and sixties. And no one can deny the massive contributions to literature by the likes of Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Orwell, Wilde, Doyle, Tolkien and even more recently, J. K. Rowling. Resentment can only go so far.

Despite my grudging respect for English artistic contributions, I have to admit that one of my best days in the last few years was when I received my results from ancestry.com.

Yes, in fact I am 75% Irish, but only 18% English, and in a complete shock, 7% Scandinavian! It appears that some Viking had his way with one of my ancestors. This may explain my once red hair.

Long story even longer, The English were just as nice as the French — and as an added bonus, I could understand the language. London is beautiful, very clean and chock full of history. The Tower of London is one of the most interesting places I have ever seen. The

first day we took a river tour on the Thames, which was fine, but not worth the price. Having learned nothing from this experience, the next day we took a bus tour, which although slightly better was also quite pricey. In the last few days we just walked to various sites — and there were many. Big Ben, Parliament, The Eye (The lines were hours long, which may bode well for our own version coming soon to a waterfront near you. Of course, my most faithful readers will know I didn’t go anywhere near it.), Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street, SoHo and Hyde Park. Simply put, London is a magnificent city.

I would be remiss if I left out the best part of the entire trip — Stonehenge. TC of course, booked the most expensive private tour. After a two hour bus ride, and a stop in Bath to

view the Roman ruins there, we arrived at Stonehenge close to sundown. Unlike the average tour, this one permitted us to walk among the humungous carved stones that comprise the site. It is an awe-inspiring place made even more so when you learn how it was constructed by the ancient Britons. Transporting stones weighing many tons from as far away as Wales, these primitive people created a monument that has survived for five thousand years. Although we were there in early May, there were already dozens of people camping out in a nearby field waiting for June 21, the Summer Solstice. Borough President James Oddo announced the next in the series of Borough Hall Blood Drives to benefit the needs of patients at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) and Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC).

Online Drug Help A Click Away Sidrugprevention.org.

That’s the online website and tool borough leaders and health professionals are looking towards to help stem what they are calling one of the worst drug epidemics in history.

It leads to the Staten Island Drug Prevention Dashboard.

The ever-updated website is described as a “dynamic, user-driven dashboard which allows individuals, families, community members and professionals to access real-time data in response to the crisis.”

It’s also the first of its kind in New York State.

It was created by Staten Island Performing Provider System, a partnership formed by Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital, with additional help from the Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness (SIPCW), Staten Island Borough Hall, and other

community and government partners.

The SI Drug Prevention Dashboard features naloxone saves, opioid emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and overdose death data for Staten Island, updated monthly. The one-stop site breaks down the data to a granular level so users can dive deep into zip code, gender, age, and even day of the week, and sorts this information along the way.

“Our goal is to give people a place to go when they need help and resources,” Staten Island PPS’s Lauren Tepfer said, “or want the latest information about what is going on in their neighborhood when it comes to opioid use. As a community, we can impact the rising death tolls by understanding the Staten Island drug landscape and connecting to the powerful resources available to our community.”

MAKING STATEN ISLAND $151 MILLION STRONGER Governor Andrew Cuomo is ready to make a big investment in Staten Island. The governor just announced a $151 million state investment to build a multi-use elevated promenade to improve the resilience of Staten Island's east shore and enhance waterfront access for surrounding communities.

The proposed seven-mile long seawall will stretch from Fort Wadsworth to Oakwood Beach to protect communities from severe coastal flooding.

It will include a promenade, biking and walking pathways and easy access to public beaches.

The seawall will be built up to 20 feet above sea level to protect against a storm at least the size of Sandy – the “300 year-level” storm, while incorporating new wetlands habitats for a comprehensive coastal resiliency solution.

The promenade will be designed to support activities

like outdoor concerts, beer and food tastings, cultural festivals, nature walks, seaside carnivals, bike races, marathons and other running competitions, environmental education, and other events and community gatherings.

So that finalized plans meet needs of the affected communities, the Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a series of community-based design forums.

There community members will be able to offer direct input into the final design of the seawall promenade and participate in the development of the project. New York State will also host a project website to keep the public updated and informed as the process and project go forward.

A final design will be complete in the winter of 2018.

Construction is slated to begin in 2019 and be completed in 2022.

FENTANYL: PUBLIC RISK

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, or narcotic, that is posing an increasing worldwide public health risk. First synthesized in 1960, fentanyl was and still is used for general anesthesia in operating rooms.

It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is also used in hospice settings for pain relief. It is available as an injectable liquid, pill, spray, oral lozenge, white powder, and patch (Duragesic). Unfortunately it is appearing in the illegal street drug market where it is causing a rise in overdose deaths. Prince died of a fentanyl overdose and thousands of counterfeit pills were found in his house, many containing fentanyl.

depression by suppressing the respiratory drive center located in the mid-brain. This respiratory suppression is much stronger with fentanyl than with any other opiate. Many people who die of a fentanyl overdose appear to have been unaware they were taking the drug. Heroin wholesales for $65,000 a kilogram while fentanyl can be bought for about $3,500 a kilogram which is why many drug dealers are mixing fentanyl with heroin and cocaine. Recently two illicit labs were found in California and Utah where they were making counterfeit Xanax and OxyContin pills using fentanyl.

Canada has declared a public health crisis because of illicit fentanyl. Most illicit fentanyl in Canada enters the country

from the west coast where it is known as “China white”. In the U.S. most illegal fentanyl is smuggled over the Mexican border. Fentanyl is also being sold as MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine), aka Ecstasy.

From 2012 to 2014 the number of reported deaths from fentanyl more than doubled going from 2,628 to 5,544. Also it is estimated that 41 percent of the 7,100 heroin-related deaths during this period involved fentanyl. Traditional drug-enforcement policies emphasize use reduction.

Cracking down on illegal laboratories and other links in the supply chain will probably help disrupt the fentanyl market. Other enforcement policies can sometimes have unintentional public health harms however. For example targeting buyers caught with syringes may increase needle sharing, raising the risk of HIV transmission. Some police departments and prosecutors have sought a non-traditional strategy of holding individuals and organizations (i.e. gangs)

liable for selling drugs containing fentanyl, even if these drugs did not cause immediate harm.

Drug treatment programs may pose risks to those individuals who continue to use at some level by reducing tolerance. There is a high incidence of overdoses in those just released from prison, jails, and other secure locations because of reduced tolerance.

There have also been inadvertent overdoses in children who are exposed to legal fentanyl patches which is why the recommendation on disposing of a patch is to fold it over on itself with the sticky surfaces facing in. Naloxone, which reverses narcotic overdoses, must be used in higher doses for a longer period in fentanyl overdoses. First responders carry naloxone kits and these kits should be available to the general public and especially to users but more education of both first responders and the public is needed.

I’m as happy to hear of someone else’s solution to one of life’s little annoyances as I am to have my own private light bulb go off in my head.

So this week, I bow my head in gratitude to current OLGC mom, and North Shore denizen, Domenica Loffreno, for her simple, innovative idea that could enhance the active lifestyle of most people I know.

Sew a pocket onto the side of a pair of socks and you’ve got a runner’s wallet, a place for a kid’s movie money, a credit card repository. A spot for your license and money when running out to grab a quart of

milk in your pajamas.

In a prior life, I never knew what to do with my post game beer money when trying to relive glory days on the basketball court. I would literally take off my sneaker to place whatever greenbacks I possessed into the shoe for safekeeping, while I huffed and puffed my up and down the court. Many a bartender would wonder why the $20 bill I just handed to him looked and felt like wet lettuce. If you’ve ever coached a kids’ team, you know that you end up being the banker for every player’s lunch funds.

This outdoor event showcased local celebrity entertainment, food, activities, merchandise, and numerous community organizations. Thanks to all who attended! ***** Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and I cosponsored a "key to the city" resource event with the New York Immigration Coalition last Saturday morning at Port Richmond High School. With representation from dozens of government agencies and

community groups, the event helped families better access city and community resources.

I reminded those in attendance that I value our diversity and the contributions that all Staten Islanders make to our city. ***** Cleaning up Tompkinsville Park!

Dozens of children from PS 16 turned out last Saturday morning to rake, weed and remove litter from the grounds of Tompkinsville Park. Led by their teachers and Island Voice, these students not only got their hands dirty Saturday cleaning the park, but they have spent months in the classroom learning about the park, and writing and drawing their visions for the park's future! I thank all who turned out to volunteer. Your work and interest make the North Shore a more beautiful place

Kids Day At The Carousel On Sunday, May 21, Borough President James Oddo hosted Kids Day at the Carousel in Willowbrook Park. Kids and their families got to ride the Carousel, which was free for all children.

The event featured also inflatable attractions, chalk art, crafts, photo spots and music.

The Staten Island Zoo presented animals from their educational unit, and the New York Public Library hosted story time for the younger children. Additional sponsors included Barnes & Noble and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. Over one thousand people attended Sunday’s event.

These students are always so impressive, and their bilingual skills will open up many opportunities for them throughout their lives and careers!

The Mary Murray was one of a fleet of steam-powered ferries which cruised between Staten Island and Lower Manhattan. She carried commuters and tourist alike for almost 45 years before being decommissioned in 1975.

A full 277 feet long, and costing $912,000 to build, she was constructed and launched from Staten Island’s United Dry Docks. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and 500 guests were there for her 1937 launch ceremony.

The vessel was named after Mary Lindley Murray. During the American Revolution, she delayed British generals with hospitality and generous servings of cakes and wine, allowing

As newer vessels joined the SI Ferry fleet, the Mary Murray was put out of service and later sold at auction to former Merchant Marine George Searle.

He planned to convert it into a floating restaurant or museum.

It was moved to a spot on the Raritan River, just within view from the New Jersey Turnpike.

Plans never materialized, and the deteriorating Mary Murray was eventually deemed an environmental hazard. It was eventually dismantled for scrap between 2008 and 2012.

Searle himself died in 2009.

But the good ship Mary Murray had already sailed into Staten Island history.

It’s genius in so many ways.

but I was thinking of how funny things can pop into your head out of nowhere, memories of something funny or even silly.

You might just laugh suddenly and somebody nearby will ask what’s so funny? You might share but more likely you say nothing because it’s too random or they won’t appreciate it.

I know more than one person who will, randomly, think of a scene from Family Feud with Steve Harvey and just start cackling.

The show is notorious for some of the things people say.

One segment cracks the funny bone of some people every time they think of it. Contestants were asked to say a thing that follows the word “Pork” as in Pork Belly or Pork and beans or Pork ribs.

Well, one contestant was asked – what word follows Pork? - and what was his completely serious response? “Cupine.” (Sounds like Q-pine).

Cupine. As in Pork-Cupine.

Here’s hoping the evil bastard and the Cupine stories live on.

At a U2 Concert in Glasgow, Scotland, the aforementioned Bono asked the audience for total quiet as he wanted to draw attention to starvation and poor medical services in Africa.

Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence. And then leaned toward the microphone and said solemnly, “Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.”

The crowd remained quiet, maybe a little depressed, until the voice with the Scottish broke the silence. "Well, stop clapping, ya evil bastard!"

Goodbye silence. Church giggles gave way to guffaws. The guy broke the tension in the air, ridiculed the sanctimonious rock star, and had the nerve to yell out something that might have gotten him beat up. It woulda been funny enough if the guy just said, “Well, stop clapping,” but adding “ya evil bastard,” made it Hall of Fame.

Hehe. Ya evil bastard.

I heard a story recently that gave me a chuckle and if there were any way I could claim it as my own I certainly would but I can’t pull off the required Scottish accent. I’d actually heard this classic a couple years ago and had forgotten about it until the recent retell.

It reminded me how some things and stories become common knowledge and live on while others – equally deserving-- just fade away. Others live on but to a too small audience. (I’m doing my part to expand the audience to my 10 readers). Others, like the one I heard, you just forget.

CABBAGE SAUTÉED WITH CHICKEN

By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 6 Ingredients: 3 tablespoons olive oil 1-1½ pound chicken thighs cut into small pieces 1 small head cabbage 2 medium carrots, shredded 1 tablespoon paprika ½ tablespoon chili powder (optional) ½ tablespoon old bay seasoning 3 bay leaves 1 cup tomato puree (or 2 tomatoes pureed) 1 cup chicken stock Salt, pepper to taste Chopped fresh parsley for garnish Directions: Heat a large sauté pan on medium high heat. Add olive oil and chicken. Sprinkle chicken with paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper and old bay seasoning. Fry for 10 minutes until browned.

Slice the cabbage into thin strips, like you would for coleslaw.

(Puree the tomato in a small food processor if using tomatoes).

Add the puree, chicken stock, carrots and bay leaves. Season with a little more salt and pepper, if needed. Mix everything together. Reduce the heat to low, stirring occasionally for about 45 minutes, until there is no liquid remaining.

Garnish with fresh parsley.

Coil Rope Baskets

When I looked online at the prices of coil rope baskets, I just had to write an article on it. Best of all, this project is not only fun for adults, but it’s a great project to do with the kids.

You will need the following items: rope, glue gun, carpenters glue, a plastic bag (or clear wrap) and a bucket or container (for shape).

Here is how to make your own.

1 - Wrap the container with clear wrap or a bag.

2 - With your container upside down start laying out your rope. For square containers, start at one corner and wrap

anywhere along the base (for round). Be sure to glue your sides to the bottom as you go.

Wrap your rope around, gluing frequently and working your way to the top. Be sure to not wrap it too tight to the container, so you can remove it later.

When you get to the top, cut the rope and glue the end well.

5 - Gently lift your container out of the rope basket and peel away any remaining plastic from the inside.

6 - Using your carpenter's glue, from the inside, fill all the seams where the ropes meet so that they are almost even.

Decorating: Now that your rope basket is done, you might want to dec-

your rope around working your way into the center. For round containers, start in the center and work your way around towards the outside.

3 - As you're wrapping your rope, frequently glue it using the glue gun to hold it in place and keep its shape.

4 - Once your base is done, start at a corner (for square) or

orate it.

Decorating is easy. You can keep it simple by just painting a few rows of rope at the top or bottom, or you can get more creative.

Using a thin wool, you can create decorations by weaving it in and out through the rope, but be sure to re-glue any holes you make after.

The lights fade and you walk (or in my case fly) onto the stage. The lights begin to slowly come up. You look out to see the audience full of people from all different backgrounds and all different ages. The mu-

sic slowly fades, the lights are as bright as they can get. Your mic clicks on and you take the deepest breath, then begin to say your lines. The adrenaline pumps and time flies. You are having the time of your life.

Yes, that was me on May 21, 2017 as I played the role of Scuttle in The Little Mermaid

Jr. Being in a show is no easy task. For eight weeks straight, I would wake up at 7 a.m. every Saturday to stretch, run my lines, do homework, and everything in between. Now, I have no plans for a few weeks, except prepping for my next audition which is in less than two weeks. Especially when putting on a show that is so iconic, the last thing you want to do is mess it up. This week I will take you through the process of putting together the famous Little Mermaid Jr. After the extremely stressful audition process, we received the cast list and were all ready to work. To have the honor of playing the scatterbrained Scuttle was definitely an experience for the books. The first few weeks were pretty smooth.

This past weekend the Staten Island Zoo and sponsor Con Edison kicked off Cool Zoo, their summer-long series of enriching and fun programs.

This Memorial Day weekend was World Turtle Day which celebrated “all things turtle, tortoise and terrapin!”

The afternoon included turtle/tortoise races, information and biofact tables, animal presentations and encounters, keeper talks and crafts and games.

The fun also comes with an educational purpose. “Cool Zoo offers fun opportunities to teach kids about animals and the importance of helping make a better environment for us to live in,” Con Edison’s Katia Gordon commented.

ticed, and saw two long pieces of blue fabric lying across the floor. I was assigned to be a water person and was thoroughly confused. Being the actual water was interesting.

When people asked what I was playing in the second show I said “water.” Naturally, many people laughed thinking I was joking. But, boy, was being the water physically and mentally demanding. You had to literally move the fabric back and forth multiple times. Whether it was soft “Ariel water” or rough “Ursula’s spell water” my arms were aching constantly. Though it was hard, I proved to myself that I can truly play any role given to me. In the first show, instead of being the water, I played an equally demanding role of a bird. Not just any bird, but that obnoxious seagull who repeatedly exclaimed “IT’S A DINGLEHOPPER!” I was surrounded by positive energy from my fellow leads, including some of my closest friends who I

know will last a lifetime. I am so blessed that I got to share the stage with so much talent and express my love for theatre through a bird. I was given the role because my wonderful directors knew I could handle it.

Though I was apprehensive at first, I knew that with the support and love of my directors, the constant positive energy radiating during practice, and the time and dedication that I devoted to this show, I would be able to pull it off.

Though I’ve been in over 20 shows, each one is a new experience with higher standards.

The Little Mermaid has taught me more about myself than any other show. I truly got to prove not only to myself, but my fellow cast mates, directors, and audience members that I can do more than be featured ensemble. I can handle more than I could’ve ever imagined. I had skills that I never got to showcase. I truly became my character and had an

absolute blast. Staten Island Children’s Theatre Association has helped me morph into the actress I am today and I cannot show enough gratitude to my many teachers and directors throughout the years. De-Stress At SI Museum Slow down, beat the heat, park your racing thoughts for a while and refresh.

The Staten Island Museum is offering guided meditations and Tai Chi and a quiet center for all.

Every other Wednesday the museum invites individuals to meet in the Infinite Compassion exhibition at 2 p.m.

There they can join in on a one hour meditation session with trained meditation guide and yogi Patricia Earle.

With soft music and voice, Earle will guide even beginners step by step into the practice and benefits of meditation.

The Infinite Compassion exhibition, where the sessions take place, is a collaboration with the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. The show serves as an introduction to Buddhist art, culture, and beliefs across Asia. The exhibit

interprets Buddhist art with sculptures, ritual objects, and paintings from India, Tibet, China, Nepal, and Japan, as well as contemporary Asian Art. “It’s really special to be able to do this at the Museum,” meditation regular Dorothy Gordon said. “I don’t know of this happening anywhere else on the island.”

Starting on July 18, every other Tuesday at 2 p.m., the museum will be offering Tai Chi sessions led by Jonathan Bricklin of the Open Center.

Tai Chi combines a powerful healing art, a moving meditation, and a non-contact martial art all in one Meditations and Tai Chi sessions are free with museum admission. The Staten Island Museum is located at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building A.

Since its start back in 1988, this golf tournament has played its way through many problems such as weather, eligibility, leaders and loss of sponsors. However, looking back over those 30 years, it just seemed to grow in popularity and talented players from many lands of golf.

Cool Zoo will have a slithering sign off with Serpent Day on Sunday, August 20, from 12 to 3 p.m. The zoo staff will display their amazing reptile collection, with presentations and demonstrations and visitors will get to see many of the snakes of the zoo outside of their glass tank. Zookeepers will host presentations of many of the snakes, lots of snake feedings and opportunities to touch these beautiful creatures. Snake photo-ops and plenty of new reptile information will also be included.

All events are included in the Zoo’s admission price.

Sounds like this year’s summer phrase will be “See you at the Zoo!”

Hannigan and I were the same age and we played many holes together even if they were “cross country” when the course was empty of golfers. We’re here to tell you that even then Frank was a stickler for golf rules and he made sure that we all learned properly or you weren’t welcome in the “game.”

Frank went on to graduate from Wagner College and eventually applied and was hired by Joe Dye of the USGA. From that point on, it wasn’t exactly easy for him, but he made it a great ride to the top and became an expert on rules, wrote some books and landed a job doing commentary and serving as a rules expert for ABC TV. Okay, despite his international popularity he never forgot his early days of golf on Staten Island. In 1987 he prodded Kimble Knowlden, Director of American Golf which had just taken over some of our local courses.

Since Hannigan was always impressed by the Department of Parks/ N.Y. Daily Mirror Citywide golf championship, he pressed everyone to start another citywide tournament and proposed that it be held at LaTourette Golf Course.

Knowlden pressed Steve Zuntag, who everyone knew was the father of golf tournaments in this borough, and Steve – a guy who hardly ever said no to any golf eventformed a committee and the New York City Amateur was launched. All of the municipal courses and clubs were involved and the event was quickly supplied with a sponsor named Manufacturers Hanover Bank.

The North Shore Local abouts of Kimble Knowlden, but we do know that Steve Zuntag and Frank Hannigan as well as many other committee members have passed onto greener pastures.

Golf never seems to die, since there is always someone to pick up the pieces and carry on. In this case, it was Matthew Zuntag, son of the founder who took over the reins, formed a committee and put all the pieces together for the 30th edition of the NYC Amateur.

Many of the best players in the Met area once again showed up and enjoyed the event from beginning to end.

The tournament is played in three separate divisions and it is rather common to see players move from one division to another as they age. This year’s field ranged in age from 16 to 62.

WINNERS Tom LaMorte of Haworth, New Jersey was the Open champion with rounds of 7168- 72 for a tournament total of 210. The 21-year old student at Campbell College also won the New Jersey State Amateur in 2016.

Ned Zachar, at the age of 55 won the senior division with rounds of 68-72- 140. Zachar is from Glen Oaks CC and carries a handicap of plus 1.

Steve Boyd, former president of the MGA and member of Baltusrol, won his second title in the super senior division with strong rounds 7471-145.

CHIP SHOTS: With so many strong golfers in this borough, we find it hard to believe that in 30 years this men’s open division has been won only twice by a local player and that was Bob Britton in 1989 and Pete Meurer in 2004.

NBA WORTH WATCHING (NOW)

Now that the 82-game exhibition season has ended and the beyond pathetic three rounds of playoffs have concluded, the National Basketball Association will finally show us something worth watching Readers of this column have picked up on my dislike of the NBA. Just this weekend, I went into Jody's for dinner and Terrance Haggerty said, "Man, you really hate the NBA!" And Terrance is right. This is a league without parity, without drama and a league that allows its star players to take nights off to "rest" as if playing basketball was as tough as working in a coal mine. And the "rests" always come in road games, thereby screwing the fans in cities across the country who have paid hundreds of dollars for a single ticket.

It is also the league that gives us a double-dose of horror in the Knicks and Nets. How much bad basketball can one New York fan take!

But now the "show" begins and here is where you are going to get some surprising "views" from yours truly.

LeBron James is the greatest player I've ever seen. That's right, I said it.. He's better than MJ. Better than Wilt, Jabbar, Magic, Bird, Oscar or West. Better now, at 32, than he was five years ago.

And because LeBron is that great, the Cavaliers have a punchers chance. And the "chance" gets more likely because of Kyrie Irving, the best penetrating guard in the NBA. Kevin Love is quality. And this year the Cavs have Kyle Korver who thinks 25-foot open jumpers are layups.

Now the other side of the argument. I've been watching NBA basketball since the 1950's and was actually a big fan of the league until Bird and Magic left the scene. And now I'm going to admit it. I've never seen a player

like Steph Curry and this Golden State team may be the greatest team ever.

Curry is an unstoppable offensive force who doesn't have to worry about playing defense.

The only player with his jumpshot range was Pistol Pete Maravich and Curry is more accurate and less streaky.

I thought Kevin Durant was a great player in Oklahoma City.

Now he's a hungry great player looking for his first ring.

Klay Thompson can be better than Curry some nights and he can play defense.

Draymont Green and Andre Iguodola are physically gifted All Stars who will take turns battering and bruising LeBron every time he comes down the lane.

This is Act III of this great basketball trilogy. Warriors won first, the Cavs got revenge and the title the city of Cleveland so richly deserved.

Golden State is heavily favored to win the rubber match. Vegas is right. Warriors in six and I will watch. These two great teams deserve our attention.

NUGENT NUGGETS: ***While the NBA will get the bulk of media coverage, that other championship series, the Stanley Cup finals are under way. ***Two weeks back, I predicted the Penguins would win the Cup again. But I will say this about the Nashville Predators. They are a tough bunch and they have set that city on fire! Nashville is a great party city on a Tuesday night in February. Now, it is THE party city in America, and if you're young, single and have a few days you can take off from the job, I suggest you get on a plane and head south. Hockey fan or not, you'll thank me later. ***"OBJ" known as Odell Beckham Junior should stand for "Often a Big Jerk" Just don't see his off-field behavior improving, and with the new Goodell rule for allowing players to "celebrate" touchdowns, I guarantee his will be off-the-charts offensive to op-

posing teams and make our Giants the most hated team in the NFL. And having Chris Carter as an "advisor" is more bad news. ***Guess that Tiger Woods "comeback" isn't as close to reality as Tiger and his golf media lackies thought it was. ***We all have witnessed the bad year the Mets are having, but fans are now noticing the manager isn't exactly helping the situation. When this 77-85 season is over, Terry Collins will be shown the door. ***My favorite Met player is Curtis Ganderson, but we can't live in the past. Time to pull the plug on Gandyman.. ***Will be totally into the Women's College World Series.

Skill level of these young ladies is off the charts and if you have never checked it out I suggest it's

never too late to learn. Watch a couple of innings and you may get hooked, but it comes with a viewer warning. The home plate umpires can be borderline blind! ***Since the "Winning a Major" monkey has come off his back, Sergio Garcia is playing like the best in the world. ***Here what Hillary said on her latest "Whining Tour" stop.

Admitted to doing a little wine drinking since November. Poor Bill. ***In case you Staten Island Florida snowbirds haven't figured it out yet, back home May has become October and October has become May. Fly home June 1st and go back the day after Halloween. ***Next week we'll try an "Nothing but Nuggets" page.
