A Grand Encore For The St. George

The St. George Theatre is proof that the show must go on.

Its stage has hosted everyone from Tony Bennett to Peppa Pig in recent years. Up next are Chaka Khan, Paul Anka, Talkin’ Baseball with Brian Cashman, Seussical the Musical, the NYC DOE School Borough Arts Festival, Miss New York Pageant preliminaries and more.

Yet for many years its stage was dark. Gone were the days when thousands attended its opening as a grand movie

palace on December 4, 1929, when Al Jolson and Kate Smith performed there, when big screen features played there until 1977.

Off and on it became a night club, restaurant, performing arts center, film location, roller rink, disco and antique showroom. All failed. The building was locked and largely abandoned for thirty years.

Deeply devoted and active in her community, Rosemary Cappozalo decided this could not be its final curtain. Owner of Rosemary’s Dance Studio, and an instructor for fifty

years, she ploughed her own savings into bringing it back to life. With daughters Luanne Sorrentino and Doreen Cugno, she formed a not-for-profit to save it from demolition and reopen it as a theatre.

The challenge was obvious.

When they first entered the long neglected building, there was no electrical power, no plumbing and the bathroom ceilings had crashed to the floor. There was also abundant wildlife, huge holes in the ceiling with water pouring in, no stage lighting, carpeting, orchestra seats, sound system, heat or air-conditioning.

But despite all the obstacles, these women had the theatre open within months and began a restoration that continues to this day.

On December 4, 2004, 75-years to the day it first opened, courtly trumpeters heralded hundreds of guests as

they arrived for the St. George’s red carpet rebirth. The soiree included a string quartet, laser lights, and a 16-piece big band on stage.

Since then, the theatre has welcomed over one million patrons and showcased more than 900 events. A short list of performers includes Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Liza Minelli, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Chris Botti, the New York City Opera, Ringo Starr, Tony Orlando, Taylor Hicks, the Beach Boys, Jackie Mason, Blondie, Cirque on Ice, and national touring productions of Broadway’s Peter Pan, Mame and Cats.

They even recently welcomed Staten Island’s own Ron Dante (‘Sugar, Sugar’ ‘Tracy’) for his first hometown concert.

Animal Care Centers of NYC Wants YOU! Thinking of adopting? Longing for the patter of four little feet around the house? Wait no longer.

The Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) has just announced their new “Go Big and Go Home” adoption special!

Through Monday, May 15, they are waiving the adoption fee for dogs over 40 pounds.

They’re forgoing the fee to find homes for large, often overlooked canines.

“ACC cares for dogs of all sizes, but small dogs do get adopted faster,” Jessica Vaccaro, ACC’s Senior Manager for Placement, said.

“In fact, dogs such as Great Danes fit in well in NYC because they require very little exercise. Some smaller dogs can actually be more challenging in small places because they need constant exercise and movement.”

Adoptions include vaccina-

tions, a microchip, spay/neuter, a free office visit at a participating veterinarian and a free identification tag.

Interested individuals and families can visit one of ACC’s three care centers, open for adoptions 12-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 p.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

In Staten Island they are at 3139 Veterans Road West. They will also be having a mobile adoption event at Blessing of the Animals, 5501 Amboy Road, on Saturday, May 13 ACC has centers in Manhattan and the Bronx and is sponsoring adoption events in all five boroughs. “Action!” On Staten Island

On Friday, May 5, Borough President James Oddo joined with Broadway Stages to announce the filming of a new Netflix series and major motion picture at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility.

Ocean's 8, a sequel and all-female spinoff of the Ocean's 11 trilogy, and the Netflix series Seven Seconds filmed at the former prison over the weekend.

The Ocean's 8 cast features several A-list actors, including: Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Damain Lewis, Matt Damon and others.

Portraying Debbie, the estranged sister of the original films’ Danny Ocean, Bullock attempts to assemble the perfect crew to pull off a grand heist at New York City's star-studded annual Met Gala.

Though he left us too soon, Staten Islander Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis is still helping his fellow veterans make one more run for the finish line.

The SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation announced it is hosting the First Annual SSgt Michael Ollis Memorial 5k Run/Walk & Street Festival on Sunday, June 11, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in New Dorp.

“Our son Michael gave his life for his country, and the foundation we set up in his honor

is dedicated to one purpose: to support his fellow veterans and their families,” said his parents and foundation co-founders Robert and Linda Ollis.

“This race will allow us as a community to memorialize Michael’s sacrifice, show our appreciation for all our service members, and raise funds to help those who have served.”

Organizers say, “The race will serve to commemorate the memory and courageous sacrifice of SSG Ollis, honor all of our nation’s veterans and service members, and raise funds for the SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation which supports various veterans’ and philanthropic causes.”

The event will begin at 8 a.m. at New Dorp Lane and New Dorp Plaza South. The 5K race starts at 9, looping around the Staten Island Railway between Beach and Jefferson Avenues.

The festival will feature live music, food, entertainment, activities, and vendors from 10 a.m. to noon.

East Coast, is currently working with New York State to purchase the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. The facility has already been used by such shows as Blindspot, Quantico, Blacklist, Blacklist Redemp-

tion, The Americans and more.

The announcement is part of BP Oddo’s efforts to bring the film and television industry’s economic benefits to Staten Island.

TAKING A CYBER BITE OUT OF DRUGS In partnership with Borough President James Oddo, the Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS) will be launching its new website and digital app platform, the Drug Prevention Portal (DPP).

The portal is a resource for healthcare providers, community organizations, and the public to connect with treatment, support groups, find specific local healthcare providers/partners, complete Narcan and substance abuse training, as well as learn about health issues related to substance use, mental health and more.

It provides access to the most up-to-date information in the battle against substance abuse.

DPP is set for an official launch on Friday, May 12, at Borough Hall.

“The site centers on tackling the drug epidemic by bringing together useful data sources,

key research and other tools for users to access in an easy to use and convenient online platform,” SI PPS Director of Health Literacy, Diversity & Outreach Celina Ramsey said.

Using feedback from their various partners, site and app users, they “hope to continuously improve and build upon this new addition to our arsenal in the fight against substance abuse.”

BP Oddo noted, “Late in 2016 my Policy staff presented to me exciting information about the Rhode Island Dashboard that has been such a useful tool as they battle their own opioid epidemic. We agreed that we simply have to bring something similar to Staten Island.”

“This will be a real-time resource for those who need assistance, as well as policymakers as we continue to look for new ways to fight this deadly epidemic.”

Community Board 1 Notes Castleton Corners Pub

Notes for this week's Community Board 1 meeting are not yet available. But here's a look at what was covered at their April gathering.

The Board approved a variance for a new house to be built with 5-foot side yards, rather than the required 8 feet side yard, on Hendricks Avenue.

Ocean Breeze Park Administrator Lauren Primerano talked about the recreational center on Father Capodanno Boulevard, its programs, fees, etc., and provided information on the number of visitors, the majority of which are North Shore youth.

Kelly Vilar and Irene Grylec spoke about the need for the indoor pool to be on the North Shore at Cromwell Center.

Janice Monger and Donna Hakim, representing Alice Austen House spoke about the need for the approval of the 15-space parking lot.

A motion was later passed to not support the construction of the parking lot due to community opposition.

Councilmember Debi Rose’s representative Troy McGhie presented updates on the programs, projects and issues she is working on.

Bike NY’s Anne Foster spoke of the street closures for the 5 Boro Bike Race.

Barbara Sanchez requested CB 1’s support in asking the Landmark Commission to landmark St. Mary’s Church, now over 100 years old and SI’s oldest church.

Chairman Nicholas Siclari noted CB1 needs to be more involved with plans for the new emergency room at RUMC. The Board also approved letters requesting Mayor de Blasio to include Staten Island in the new city-wide ferry system and one objecting to discontinuance of the carpool plan on the Bayonne Bridge.

The meeting was adjourned after 9 p.m.

Real Estate Corner WHAT SOLD IN YOUR ZIP CODE When houses are sold the selling price becomes public record. What prices don’t necessarily reflect are the effects of family deals (mom sells to son at a deep discount off the market rate) or if there are private mortgages held in addition to a main mortgage. For example, the records say Mary and Tom bought a house for $400,000 and took out a mortgage from a bank. But the real price of the house might have been $600,000. In this case, the seller

agreed to hold a second mortgage of $200,000 making the real selling price $600,000. The true sales price listed on public records, therefore, often do not include private mortgages as in the case of Tom and Mary.

The prices we list here are random sales in local zip codes.

A wide disparity in price could reflect the size, condition and particular location of houses.

THE ‘STUFF’ YOU CAN FIND

Here’s an aerial photo taken of the Staten Island ferry on April 5, 1960. It comes courtesy of a website called Stuffnobodycaresabout.com which offers a wealth of old photos and information about New York City.

The site explains that this is the old Whitehall or South Ferry Terminal. Originally named the Municipal Ferry Terminal, it was completed in 1909.

The architects were Richard A. Walker and Charles Morris.

George B. McClellan Jr., son of Civil War General George Mc-

Clellan, was mayor.

In 1957 it was entirely renovated, being completely stripped to its steel frame and reconstructed.

On September 8, 1991, a “mysterious fire badly damaged the building. The ferry line got along with an interim port until, with stunning speed, the new Whitehall Terminal was built and opened in 2005.

According to the website, the fare was a nickel when it was first established in 1897, and remained so until its first increase, to ten cents, in 1972. In 1975, it went to 25 cents, then 50 cents in 1990.

On July 4, Independence Day, 1997, the fare was eliminated entirely, making it a commuters’ smooth passage and the best free cruise in town.

Stuff nobody cares about?

Richmond Choral Society Brings Us Bach to Broadaway

On Saturday, May 20 at 8 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Richmond Choral Society (RCS) will depart a bit from the usual Baroque to Contemporary fare to pop and show tunes, and some jazzy renditions of two familiar Bach compositions, aptly called “Bach to Broadway.”

RCS members can boast an unbroken history of at least two concerts a year, community performances for all occasions and a refuge for the lifelong lover of beautiful music and singing for over six decades! I have been a member since 1978, and can tell you first hand of the physical and spiritual benefits that come with it. I have also had the honor of serving on its Board before becoming RCS’s first executive director in 2008. From those three perspectives, I have watched the chorus grow in performance skills, learning and implementing what it takes to keep it vital in the community, due in no small part to Marina Alexander, our music director since 1995.

Her judicious and scholarly choices of music, her precise conducting and most of all, her passion and dedication to the scholarship and excellence of the performance consistently invigorates our mission--to inform, and instruct the Staten Island community of the classical and contemporary choral repertory.

Marina is an adjunct professor of Music and Conducting at CSI, and the founder and music director of New Jersey’s Arcadian Chorale. Those associations have benefited us with successful collaborations enhancing our numbers to perform the grand Verdi Requiem, and Carmina Burana and other choral masterpieces in a variety of venues in New York and New Jersey, including Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, and the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. In fact, we were invited to return to Carnegie Hall for

the honor of performing the great Brahms Requiem with Arcadian Chorale, our New Jersey counterparts, and other choruses on Sunday, May 28. Coincidentally, we were asked by the Staten Island Philharmonic to join them in performing the same program two weeks later, on Monday, June 12, at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Since 1993, RCS has auditioned graduating high school seniors and residents of Staten Island for an annual scholarship to encourage the further study of vocal music, which perpetuates RCS’s mission into the future. Two of our previous scholarship winners have returned to RCS. Kristin Reiersen Parrish (the first recipient in 1993) studied and performed opera professionally and is a frequent soloist for RCS. Theresa Volastro received the award in 2011. She teaches music to grades K-8 at St. Patrick’s School in Richmondtown and directs the music ministry at St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus. Theresa has become a member in our soprano section and has recently offered to serve on our Board. RCS Youth Chorus, now Young Voyces, was conceived and made available to

Staten Island students as an extension of RCS from 2003 to 2013. One of our young choristers, who had come to us as a 6th grader, performed at our spring concert as the winner of the RCS Annual Scholarship for 2015. The 2017 Scholarship award will go to Gabriella Camiolo, a senior at LaGuardia H.S. of Music and Art and Performing Arts. She will receive a monetary award and will sing at this concert. Gabriella will attend the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in the fall. RCS Chamber Ensemble, a smaller group chosen by the director from the full chorus, performs at select RCS concerts and at community events by special request. The ensemble performed at Eger Health Care & Rehab Center to celebrate their centennial on December 15, 2016. Over the years, RCS has participated in community events such as the 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Commemoration at the SI Postcards Memorial; the Italian Culturefest in October of 2014 at Snug Harbor’s Tuscan Gardens, and Christmas carols at the Staten Island Arts Cultural Lounge when it was located at the ferry terminal. In January 2013, the NY Knicks invited us to sing the National Anthem to open a

game at Madison Square Garden on “Staten Island Night.”

Our singers, who range from high school students to octogenarians, volunteer their time and talents. They are teachers, auto mechanics, lawyers, choir directors, physicians and others who seek us out to give them a place to follow their bliss. When Anders Emile, professor of music at Hunter College, started the chorus in 1951, the group was comprised of many singers of his Scandinavian ancestry who came from his Norwegian Church choir in Brooklyn. When I joined twenty-seven years later under the direction of Jan Meyel, a cantor from Temple Israel, it was a greater mix. Today, two of those original members are still in our ranks in a group that has grown with Staten Island in its diversity. Sashin Aluwihare, a Tech Services Project Manager, came here from Sri Lanka in 2009 with his family ready to start college. He joined our tenors in 2013 after attending one of our concerts. Daniel Johnson, another RCS tenor, is a wellness coach who came from Liberia in 2001 at age 15 with his family. He became a member last September. Having sung with school choruses and with a gospel choir at SUNY Cortland, he was looking for a place to sing and found our website.

In addition to the two familiar 18th century pieces by Bach, RCS’s spring concert will span the music of up to six decades of select Broadway shows and pop bands. All who come to hear Bach to Broadway will leave the church in Staten Island’s Westerleigh section, whistling and singing the tunes they heard growing up, or that their parents and grandparents enjoyed on the stage, radio, on vinyl on their record players--later on CDs, and television on the Ed Sullivan show.

There is something for everyone here. As George Gershwin would say, S’Wonderful!

Brunching Out In Stapleton Looking for a perfect Sunday out? The Mud Lane Society for the Renaissance of Stapleton has it all wrapped up for you.

Known for its beautiful Victorian homes, Stapleton is also home to a growing number of restaurants. On Sunday, May 21, the civic group would like to introduce some of them to the rest of the borough and beyond.

They are hosting a brand new restaurant crawl called Brunch Out in Stapleton from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and featuring six top local eateries. Each will be offering specialty items for free and also a selection of others at drastically reduced prices. Tickets to the crawl are just $15 per person, and many of these restaurants are new to the scene and eager to introduce their top-shelf offerings.

The Society also notes that tickets to Brunch Out make great Mother’s Day gifts.

Especially as it can be enjoyed when spring is in full swing and the rush to eat out is over.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Mud Lane Society for the Renaissance of Stapleton Facebook page. That Sunday tickets can also be obtained at Errigo’s, 502 Bay Street, which is where all participants will pick up a guide, tickets and a bracelet.

Space on the crawl is limited.

Among the eateries included is the Duzer’s Local, 387 Van Duzer Street. They’ll be of-

fering a choice of free mini-olives, oil cake, brownies and cookies. For an extra $3 each, you can try one small coffee or tea with a mini-croissant; a small coffee or tea with a mini-Danish (assorted), or a sparkling water with assorted mini-pastries. Duzer’s, new to the community, offers specialty coffees, so this stop is a real wake-up call!

Errigo’s, 502 Bay Street, debuted about a year ago. This sit-down restaurant is attached to a pizzeria named Paulie’s, both under the same ownership. The pizza is a winner and owner Phill Errigo will be offering a free slice of several specialty pies to crawl participants. If you want to explore further, Errigo is offering a serving of eggplant rollatini, a chicken or spinach roll, and a pasta dish, for just $3 each.

Hop Shoppe, 372 Van Duzer Street, replaced Martini Red a while back. They’ll be offering General Tso cauliflower for the crawl crowd. For $3, you can get a sizzling burger slider. Among their wide menu offerings are New York Reuben fried dumplings.

In what was formerly Yugoslavia, children would tie up their mothers on Mother’s Day. The only way she could get free was to pay them with treats.

In Greek mythology, the maternal goddess Rhea was honored during the spring festivals. The first Mother's Day was celebrated in 1908. Anna Jarvis honored her mother Ann Jarvis with a memorial. Ann Jarvis had started a committee in 1868 to establish ‘Mother's Friendship Day'. Her motivation had been to reunite families after the Civil War. She died in 1905, before Mother's Day became a holiday. The American version of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It became an official holiday just 6 years later in 1914. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Diabetes and Complications

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease with multiple complications. The most common neurologic symptom among patients with diabetes is a distal (hands and feet, or farthest from the heart), symmetric polyneuropathy, or peripheral neuropathy. This complication is estimated to affect between 10 and 50 percent of patients with diabetes.

A minority of patients with neuropathy will be symptomatic and will have either positive symptoms (burning, tingling) or negative symptoms (numbness, weakness). The human body has three types of nerve systems – sensory (controls the ability to feel and sense things like cold or heat), motor (controls movement), and autonomic (controls auto-

matic functions like digestion, respiration, etc.). Of the three, diabetes most commonly affects the sensory nerves causing burning, numbness, or tingling of the feet or hands. But it can attack the motor nerves causing weakness or paralysis or the autonomic nerves, most commonly causing a condition called gastroparesis which negatively affects digestion and the passage of food through the gut.

Primary care practitioners can easily screen patients for diabetic neuropathy. The key elements of screening include the patient’s history, physical examination, and sensory assessment. Sensory screening can include whether the patient can feel a pinprick or sense vibration using a tuning fork. Lab testing can be used to

identify other causes of neuropathy. For example, a low Vitamin B12 level may cause neuropathy and should be suspected in someone taking metformin and in someone who has had bariatric surgery or has a malabsorption syndrome. Multiple myeloma, a disease of the bone marrow, may often initially present with symptoms of a peripheral neuropathy, and may be diagnosed with a blood test.

Treatment of diabetic neuropathy is usually guided by other diseases or conditions the patient may have. For example amitriptyline, used to treat severe depression and other psychiatric illnesses, may be very helpful but may not be tolerated by elderly patients, those with electrical heart conduction disorders, or at higher doses. Anticonvulsants like gabapentin and pregabilin may also help and can

improve nighttime sleep but may cause daytime drowsiness. SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor) may help but may cause unpleasant side effects.

The biggest problem with diabetic neuropathy besides it’s symptoms is the development of diabetic foot ulcers, which have a lifetime incidence of 25 percent. Because their feet are numb, diabetics with neuropathy may not feel or detect the presence of a foot ulcer until it is fairly advanced. Advanced foot ulcers often result in bone infections and amputations.

Neuropathy may also cause foot deformities like Charcot foot which make walking painful and difficult. It is for these reasons that those with diabetes should see not only their primary care doctor but also a podiatrist at regular intervals.

Idea Day Is An Idea Sharing ideas is what we do.

And, of course, sometimes we share pretty useless stuff but sometimes we share some gems - -great ideas that we’re just to lazy to pursue. We don’t think such sharing should be limited to a newspaper column.

We’d like to propose Idea Day in schools. In advance of such a day, teachers and club moderators could talk about ideas and collaboration and how great things come to be.

And they could start to plan an Idea Day at which students could present ideas and maybe get to work on some of them.

It could be a schoolwide day of fun and innovation.

Good ideas have a knack for catching on. Once a school or two start having Idea Days the word would spread to other schools and pretty soon a bunch of schools would hold

Idea Days. And it wouldn’t stop there. Schools could select their best ideas to send to a district-wide or citywide Idea convention.

It wouldn’t necessarily have to be a competition like the Westinghouse or Siemens Competition. It would be more like a fair or exhibition which would promote idea sharing and collaboration.

You may have heard of the TED talks which are run by a nonprofit for the purpose of spreading ideas in all sorts of businesses and topics. Idea Day in schools would follow the same philosophy.

At the very worst, students would be encouraged to think creatively and collaboratively and we think that’s a great idea that should get its own day!

I appreciate the high-level community interest, and I look forward to continuing to work with my partners in government, community groups and local businesses to further improve conditions at Tompkinsville Park. ***** Ending the gender pay gap: We cannot end the tale of two cities without addressing the gender pay gap. This new law signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio yesterday gives us tools to combat pay inequity by banning all employers from inquiring about a job applicant’s prior salary and using it to set future wages.

If a woman or person of color starts his or her career with a pay gap, each new employer asking for salary history makes it more likely that the pay gap will follow the employee throughout his or her life. What should matter most to an employer is what a position is worth to their organization and the candidate’s qualifications – not

what a person made in his or her last job.

I thank Public Advocate Letitia James for introducing this legislation and Mayor Bill de Blasio for signing this bill into law. ***** Curbing hit and runs: Earlier this week, I heard testimony on two bills that aim to stem the number of drivers who leave the scene of an automobile crash without being caught. One would offer a $1,000 reward to those who help police catch hitand-run drivers, and another would create an Amber Alert-type system to help catch those who flee the scene of a crash. I support both bills and I hope they will help make our streets safer for all who use them. ***** Rain barrel giveaway: Thanks to all who joined us for our rain barrel giveaway last Saturday morning! I partnered with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, as well as state Sen. Diane Savino and Assembly member Matthew Titone, to distribute more than 100 free rain barrels to Staten Island residents. College Culture The son who will remain nameless returned home, his first year in college complete.

He spent the first semester in Ireland where the Crack was grand. It’s actually spelled –Craic – but is said the same way as crack so it can be a little jarring to hear about all the craic your son had. He’d lost a bit of weight in Ireland which confused me even more about this craic stuff. Craic sounded like crack and with him looking like a leprechaun skeleton it looked like crack to me. But as usual, I was mistaken. His bony appearance was just a commentary on the Irish cuisine.

Anyway, there are apparently six levels of craic. Good craic means you had a fun night out.

Nothing crazy, just a good time.

Mighty craic is another level up, there might even be a moment that will be retold through the years. Savage craic means everyone was in top form and the Guinness was plentiful and quick to disappear. Deadly craic – which right away makes you not want details – is a rip roaring time, somehow a step above savage but just below the ultimate: the craic was ninety.

The craic was ninety means everything was nirvana, amazing, couldn’t be topped and is immediately enshrined in the nighttime hall of fame.

That’s good craic but that’s only five. The sixth? Minus craic. The night just went south. You would’ve been better off standing

In Ireland he got food poisoning, caught cold in a bog, and blushed his way through the semester as curse words were sprinkled into every conversation including in class and at dining room tables in the homes of friends he had made. He got to climb on ancient ruins, visit London, and toured the Guinness factory. All in all, it was good craic. But he did not shoot a gun.

That’s what he did in North Carolina, where he spent the most recent semester on the craic College tour.

His friends in Ireland wanted him to experience Irish life as they know it. But other than the steady f-bombs (and another word that everybody hates) the life across the ocean didn’t seem all that different than the Rockaway experience.

Likewise, his new downhome friends wanted him to experience the south. And in the south it’s guns, NASCAR, and dip which is some kind of cousin of chewing tobacco.

Page 15 So basically it took him going down south to be in a foreign country. Guns? Yeah, when his North Carolina crew found out he’d never shot a gun they said, let’s go. They piled into a car – I don’t think it was a monster truck or El Camino – and drove off campus to an open field not far away.

They pulled out some guns and said, go ahead, shoot that tree.

Kind of mind boggling. I mean you can turn down a drink but if somebody with a gun tells you to shoot a gun, you probably should do it. The nameless one fired away. He said it was kind of awesome.

This is gonna take some getting used to for the tuition paying parents. The south is a different world. I had to check the course catalog again wondering if the college was offering advanced degrees in duct tape and extension cords.

Anyway, it’s a year in the books.

I’m not sure which place he found more craic but at least he’s no longer scary skinny. My guess is he’d move to Ireland permanently If they ever get a Waffle House and Chic-fil-a.

Project: Sea View Healthy Community Restoring the legacy of the Sea View Hospital Campus, Sea View Healthy Community is a proposed mixed-use,

will be transformed with the construction of the world’s largest observation wheel along with a new retail complex and hotel on two sites adjacent to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark in St. George.

Project: Lighthouse Point Lighthouse Point will include more than 100 residential units, a hotel, a diverse mix of retail shops and dining, considerable public open space, and parking.

Project: Replacement of Anchorage Channel Water Siphons This new siphon will ensure a backup water supply to Staten Island and will facilitate the City's ability to benefit from anticipated increases in cargo volumes in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

20 Minute Shrimp and Sausage

By Sharon Feldman

Optional garnish: chopped parsley Instructions Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with some olive oil or coconut oil Season shrimp with Old Bay Seasoning Cook shrimp about 3-4 minutes until opaque – remove and set aside Cook onions and bell peppers in skillet with 2 tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil for about 2 minutes Add sausage and zucchini to the skillet, cook another 2 minutes Put cooked shrimp back into skillet along with the garlic, and cook everything for about 1 minute Pour chicken stock into pan and mix through to moisten everything Add salt, ground pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste Remove from heat, garnish with parsley and serve hot

Even though everyone is out enjoying these nice spring days, the hot summer is coming and there will be those days you just want to sit inside and enjoy the A/C. Here is a small project you can do while hiding from the heat. A floating bookshelf, this is a simple project but happens to be one of my favorites.

Mairon Lior who resides in New York won several awards for his work and one of the things he designed is the Umbra Conceal Floating Bookshelf (you can find it on Amazon for about $15).

Lior’s floating bookshelf allows you to showcase your books as floating works of art.

Just mount this bracket to the wall, slip your book on and add more books to the stack.

Keep in mind that books are heavy when stacked, so you need to be sure to mount the bracket to a beam. I wouldn’t

LOCAL KID THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MAN

Ever since my Pop Pop passed away, article after article has been written about him. However, I didn’t want to write just another article about Jody Haggerty. I wanted to write about a different Haggerty. The woman behind the man, I guess you can say. That woman is my Nanny, Mary Haggerty. She is not only hard working, but incredibly loving and caring towards everyone. Her dedication to her grandchildren is beyond explanation. She goes to my cousin’s softball games, watches me in my shows, and checks my math take home tests frequently. Those are all things she is not obligated to do, but does

because of her dedication to her family. She is always there for advice and to lend a hand when picking out graduation dresses.

When entering her house, boxes upon boxes are piled by the doorway full of unnecessary gifts for everyone from the dog, Lucky, to my aunts and uncles.

Though she doesn't cook much, our dinners from Jodys when I sleep over are always better than any home cooked meal. Nanny isn't just a nickname I call Mary Haggerty. It is a title. A title that isn't given but earned. My Nanny is so much to so many people. I am truly lucky and forever grateful to have Mary Haggerty as my Nanny.

Happy Mother's Day Nanny, I don't know what we would do without you!

One of my favorite things to do in New York is to walk through the neighborhoods and imagine the history of the streets. An even better way to get that sense is to go on a pub

crawl of the bars of the 1800’s of New York. There aren’t as many left as you might imagine, some are famous, others less so. But they all tell a story, a piece of fabric, that is New York. So here are some of my favorite places along one of my walks, the Wall Street to Village tour.

Start off at Fraunces Tavern at the foot of Broad Street. This place is amazing and worth a visit just by itself. It is where George Washington said goodbye to his troops after the Revolutionary War, and has a great museum upstairs. The bar was redone recently but it has that colonial feel to it. On the weekends they have Irish music.

Around the corner is a new favorite, it’s not from the 1800’s but feels like it, and since it was opened by a friend, gets a mention here: The Dead Rabbit. It was named best cocktail bar a few years ago when it opened, and the name comes straight out of the Gangs of New York. Try to get upstairs if you can, it’s a cool place.

At this early junction you have a choice, should you walk, train or cab it to the next spot. I always walk, but people get mad at me because I always say it’s only a few more blocks.

By the way, a word of caution if you are ever with me, it nev-

er is a few more blocks. So off to North Moore and Varick Streets to Walkers Bar, a place with real tin ceilings and an old time feel. It qualifies as a bar from the 1800’s because, it is. A good second stop along the way north.

The next stop is a little further west and north, Spring Street and Hudson to the Ear Inn. The Ear Inn is a designated landmark and was built in the late 18th century. The name came to be because the word Bar lit up in fluorescent lights lost some of its luster and only showed Ear, so it became the Ear Inn. Check out the history on the walls and the book on the bar describing the history; read it over a pint.

From here we walk again, up Hudson Street to West 11th Street to the White Horse Tavern built in 1880. The White Horse is famous for all the literary patrons that once drank there including Norman Mailer, James Baldwin, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. But the most famous however was Dylan Thomas who wrote “do not go gently into that goodnight.”

He drank himself into oblivion in 1953 and died. Rage on Dylan.

Now we head east toward Third Avenue and East 7th Street, home to McSorley’s Ale House. McSorley’s has been around since about 1860. Abe Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Woody Gurthie and Hunter Thompson were all known to have imbibed at McSorley’s. And you can add my name to that list too. If you are a real New Yorker you found your way to McSorley’s before you were 18 and left with a beer mug under your coat. I am not recommending that today though. Try the dark beer.

Definitely need a stretch of the legs now, so continue north to East 18th Street right

off Park Avenue to the Old Town Tavern opened in 1892 as a speakeasy for Tammany Hall. This place was bought in 1982 by a Greenpointer named Larry Meagher, and the family still runs it today. They once owned the Landmark in Greenpoint and Eric’s by Bishop Loughlin. You need to see this place because it is used in countless TV commercials and TV shows. You will walk in and say, I have seen this place before, and chances are you have.

Getting close to the end of this walking tour of New Yorks’ best from the 1800’s, because between the walking and imbibing, it’s getting late, so time for one more then call it a night. Walk east on 18th Street to Pete’s Tavern in Gramercy Park. Pete’s has been serving hops and barley since 1864. It

is here that O. Henry supposedly wrote the Gift of the Magi.

Perhaps an espresso to end the evening and for the question as to how to get back to Staten Island. Maybe one day a ferry will whisk us up at 23rd Street and the East River and take us home, but for now if you were smart enough to travel with a designated driver, enjoy the ride home, otherwise call Uber!!

Needless to say, a tour of the North Shore pubs must be done before doing any of the above.

GOLF NOTES

Staten Island native Pete Falloon will be guiding his St. Peter’s University golf team to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Regionals later today. Falloon has been the coach of the golf team for the past nine years and now serves as Golf Director at the Jersey City school and quite proudly at that. The university has long been connected with golf stars from Staten Island and even coached by Pete Meurer, now a professional, prior to Falloon.

Falloon displayed a pretty solid game of his own chalking up a fine junior record as well as his play in local tournaments like the Staten Island Amateur Championship. He attended the same school and was part of the 1964 team that enjoyed an undefeated season and was also named Student Athlete of the Year. Falloon later took over the head coaching job and continued at the post for the next eight years during which his teams annexed the MAAC title

We recall the coach telling us last year that he was about to retire. However, maybe he just likes being part of a winning team because he appointed one of his strongest players, Nick Dilio, the head coaching position and stayed on as Golf Director of St. Peter’s University.

While there are no local golfers on the “Peacocks” team, there are some connections with pros from Staten Island.

FAIRWELL TO DAN BLAINE After the salute to Daniel Blaine by members of the Staten Island Golf Association at Silver Lake on April 30th a well-written obituary appeared in the Staten Island Advance on May 5th. A celebration of his life was held last Monday evening at LiGreci’s Staaten restaurant where legions of friends gathered along with family to pay tribute to the popular West Brighton native.

DESPITE THE STORM The 30th N.Y. City Amateur Championship kicked off with a qualifying round at Silver Lake Golf Course on Saturday, May 6, as well as another at Pelham G.C. in the Bronx. The Lake course took on some 4-inches of rain prior to play, but the usual field found the course to be very playable. The list of players in the three divisions was shorter than usual, however the scoring proved to be lower with Niell Handley firing 2-under-par 68 to lead the men’s open division.

Stuart Goldstein was the low qualifier in the senior section with 74 and Mark Grunlund posted 79 to head the super senior class. All qualifiers will be eligible to compete in the NYC Amateur Championship at LaTourette Golf Course beginning on May 27.

DARKNESS FALLS

I never liked the Dark Knight.

And I'm not referring to the series of horrible Batman movies that have come out over the past 15 years. For me, Michael Keaton is THE Batman, and Val Kilmer wasn't bad in his one shot at being the Cape Crusader. After that, Christian "The Mumbler" Bale, George Clooney and Ben Affleck have been beyond terrible.

But enough of the movie critic in me. The Dark Knight I'm referring to is Matt Harvey, who is nothing more than a myth in the minds of Mets fans who still believe he was once a great pitcher.

Harvey was never great.

The best season of his career he won 13 games, Going into the 2017 season, his lifetime record was 31-30. He's been more hurt than healthy. Now, he is simply a clubhouse cancer that the Mets should ship out of town.

If you want to truly understand how underachieving Harvey has been in his fiveyear plus career, compare him to Bartolo Colon. In Bart's three-year Mets stint he won 44 games and lost 35. More importantly, the round one never missed a start and his teammates loved him.

The only person who loves Harvey is the man himself.

When the media was building up his "Dark Knight" reputation a few years back, Harvey was busy getting his smug puss of the front pages of newspapers with super models on his arm. Anyone who was paying attention could see he was so full of himself that his career

would always be me first, team and teammates later.

Even in his finest hour, the World Series start when he had the Kansas City Royals blanked for eight innings, his ego ruined things. He bullied manager Terry Collins into letting him go out to pitch the ninth inning because he wanted to be THE MAN. We all know how that ended up.

So what Harvey pulled last weekend comes as no surprise. In his world, he is better than anybody else. Team rules are for the other guys, not him.

With all the injuries to the Mets' pitching staff, the team needed him now more than any time in his career. He chose to do what he damn well pleased!

Send him packing, Sandy Alderson. The man truly is a "dark knight" but this batman will only help ruin a franchise if he is allowed to stay. ***Back in February, the theme of this column was the great success of the men and women basketball teams at the College of Staten Island.

Both teams won CUNY championships, both went to the NCAA Division III playoffs, and neither team received hardly any press coverage in the Island's only daily paper.

At the time, the column headline called the CSI gymnasium "the home of champions" and yours truly wrote "and get use to it, because the CSI baseball team under coach Mike Mauro and the softball team under coach Stella Porto will be doing a lot of winning this spring".

And that prediction came to fruition this Sunday.

In baseball, the Dolphins came back from the loser's bracket to win four games in two days and captured their 19th CUNY title. The team with the second most conference crowns is John Jay with seven.

The vast majority of the CSI roster is home grown. The offensive stars are Anthony DiMarco (.362 with 19 RBI), Glenn Glennerster (.333 with 3 hrs.and 27 RBI) and Jett Nouvertne (.364 for 23 RBI) Pitching aces Tom Musso (Tottenville), Derek Jentz (Petrides) and Ryan Kennedy (St. Peter's) combined for 13-3 record.

The softball team was even better. The Lady Dolphins had a school record 33 wins and went undefeated in conference play. The team superstars are out of St. Joseph's by-theSea. Freshman Patricia Riches hit .541 with five home runs and 46 RBI and senior Jacqueline Cautela hit .366 with 10 triples, 3 hrs. and 28 RBI. Cautela was even more valuable on the mound. Her record was 15-3 and the ERA was 0.83.

The bottom line on the CSI story is this. In both basketball, baseball and softball, CSI teams win all the time with players from Staten Island high schools and they get ZERO publicity. Yet, we get endless coverage of a Wagner College men's basketball program that has ZERO Staten Island products. It's just not right.

Speaking of Wagner College, and baseball, Fred Sabido (Susan Wagner) hit four home runs for the Seahawks in an NEC doubleheader against FDU last Saturday.

Four home runs is a pretty big deal, right? I'm pretty sure this is the first time many of

Nugent's Nuggets: When Greg Bird comes back healthy, this Yankees lineup will be absolutely scary. Think about it. Who should bat ninth? Chase Headley?

Due to deadline issues, I'm writing this before Game 6 of the Rangers-Senators series.

But if the Rangers blow this Stanley Cup opportunity, it is because great hockey teams do not blow third-period leads in the playoffs. This from a guy was the beat writer for the Islanders during their Cup dynasty. If those teams had a goal lead with ten minutes left, it was over!

Has Cepedes teed off yet?

And what geniuses in the Mets organization thought Michael Conforto needed to "work his way" into that lineup!

Nobody around here really cares, but Mike Trout is doing it again. Imagine if this baseball "freak" played on a good team!

Yawn!!!!!!!!!

The Warriors and Cavs haven't worked up a good sweat yet.

My Kentucky Derby picks were awful. If fact my "value" play. Thunder Snow, left the starting gate and thought he was a circus prancing stallion!

But I'll try again in the Preakness.

March was the pits, April even worse, but May! Parents of baseball and softball players are freezing to death, and my golfing buddies are getting very cranky. Bring back Uncle Weatherby, he was bombed half the time but his forecasts were more accurate!
