Community Emergency Response Members Honored

In celebration of National Volunteer Week, on Wednesday, April 26, the NYC Emergency Management Department honored 40 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members who volunteered over 100 hours of service in 2016 with both presidential and mayoral vol-

unteer service awards. CERT members are dedicated volunteers who help to prepare their neighbors and communities for different types of disasters.

“Whether it’s organizing events to prepare their neighbors for emergencies, assisting during large community events, or responding to emer-

gency events throughout the five boroughs, CERT volunteers are an invaluable resource for their neighborhoods,” said EMD Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “Those being honored today are the best of the best, individuals who time and again go above and beyond to serve their communities.”

Staten Island’s CERT Team

Team Chief for the Staten Island Port Richmond CERT team John Tidona was among those honored at the event. Tidona’s CERT team is the only one on Staten Island. They participate in nearly every large-scale event on the island including the Five Borough Bike Tour, NYC Marathon, the Tour de Staten Island, holiday events, and over 30 emergency preparedness events each year.

“It’s important for us to be prepared,” John Tidona said.

“Staten Island has a different demographic than the other boroughs. Most of it is residential, and most of it is spread out. We have a lot of floods, we have brush fires and we have traffic that is unparalleled.”

A total of nine Port Richmond Staten Island CERT members were recognized for their service at this inaugural event.

2 Moms Seeing Green In Westerleigh

If there is a green spot in Westerleigh Park’s future, it is being cultivated by the 2 Mom’s From Westerleigh group.

Together they have taken up the mantle from previous neighborhood advocates to once again make it a center of their community.

The biggest goal right now is to fund and get a natural play area. Fitting in with the aesthetic of the park, it would have recovered wood and natural shapes for the kids to explore and play on.

On a sunny afternoon, the park is a blur of running, playing children. Jane Kelly, one of the “2 Moms” founders, tells The Local that for a long time it wasn’t like this.

“I’ve lived here my whole life.

For decades, this park wasn’t used.”

Toni Pesce also grew up here.

As a mother looking for a vibrant, healthy place for neighborhood kids to play, she joined forces with Kelly. The park “was meant to be the ‘backyard’ for all the homes here.”

After many years of disuse and disdain, Pesce and Kelly credit hardworking mother and daughter Denise and Georgette Lakeman for getting its revival rolling.

Living just off the park, they decided to take a hands-on, hands-in approach to making things happen. Around 2000, Pesce says, the pair began to organize movie nights, clean ups, puppet shows, fitness classes and even community Christmas and Halloween celebrations.

Many people think of history as far away and long ago.

But as authors and lifelong residents Ceceilia N. Brunner and Jim Harkins illustrate, history can be right around the corner and closer in time than you think.

They researched, wrote, compiled and published “Images of Modern America: West Brighton.”

In its 96 pages and more than

150 black and white and color images, Harkins and Brunner bring a lot of West Brighton’s past to light.

Inside are vintage pictures of bygone South Beach bathing beauties, and men shoveling snow in long coats, caps and fedoras. Or photos of the Staten Island Zoo’s bright colorful aquarium, and the old Columbian Lyceum originally on Richmond Terrace.

And people like Frank and Caroline Sorrentino of Sorrentino’s Bakery, Charles Kennedy of Kennedy’s Men’s Store and notable residents like the Honorable Thomas R. Native Americans are urging President Trump to make good on a 100 year old promise made by President Taft in 1913 to build a national Indian Memorial on Staten Island. The Staten Island Red Storm Drum & Dance Troupe sent a letter to Trump requesting he revive the project. Taft and 32 Indian chiefs dedicated a piece of land for the monument. The land is now part of Fort Wadsworth National Park.

The Troupe has planned a fundraiser in September to finance the cost of erecting the monument. ***** We all are winners! Congratulations to West Brighton's Luke Timmins on winning $20,000 Wednesday on ABC's game show, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and restoring some of Staten Island’s TV dignity in the process. Peters announced that Gaspare Santoro and Paul Santoro each pleaded guilty to a felony count of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the first degree for filing false asbestos reports in relation to the demolition of Mt. Manresa. Under the plea agreement, Gaspare Santoro will surrender his engineering and asbestos inspector and asbestos investigator licenses and Paul Santoro will surrender his asbestos inspector and asbestos investigator licenses. Neither can take on new work in those fields.

If they do not comply, the Santoros face one and a third to four years in prison. ***** It seems the DOE has lead in its shoes when it comes to ridding our schools of lead in their water. one to live with. I had, for all intents and purposes, morphed into Emmet’s parents.

There were trying times, and a few near disasters, but we got through those tumultuous teenage years. But when pray tell, is it going to end?

Their twenties are a bit easier to handle, but the basement is still their domain. Modern technology is such that they can now talk to a video game opponent through the screen, even if that opponent is in a basement somewhere in the wilds of Australia. When their friends come over, they all sit and watch each other play against someone else who lives far away. It is all very strange for a guy who was entertained by an eight track player.

Maybe I should go down and see what’s going on? Nah — I think I’ll just stay upstairs and watch reruns of “That 70’s Show.”

I was always met with sullen stares and inaudible muttering from my progeny and their guests. After about a year of this, I noticed myself popping down less often. When girlfriends were introduced into the mix, additional questions arose: Is she still down there?

What was that noise? Should I go down and break this up? It was a balancing act between giving them some space and avoiding the unwanted consequences of raging teenage hormones. I found myself giving warning shouts — “I’m coming down to get something in five minutes” — if I had to go below.

Why the change? Honestly, I was afraid of what I might find — so I avoided potential confrontations. Also, because I wanted them to know I “trusted” them — even though I didn’t. Sometimes the devil you don’t know is the easiest

Since man built the first basement, teenagers have been finding refuge there. For some unknown reason the basement is something akin to sanctuary. I remember in my teenage years, we would gather in Emmet’s basement to drink beer and listen to music. His parents were right upstairs, yet they never came down. It was as if there was an invisible force field at the top of the stairs that they couldn't breach. We reveled in our T-Rex and Who eight track tapes, while working our way through six packs of Bud. There were a few other households that had a somewhat similar aspect — although certainly not mine.

My old man would have been through that force field like Captain Kirk — and on me like ugly on a Klingon. Still, a few of my friends had a similar freedom, although none that rose anywhere near Emmet’s level of wanton revelry. Underage and without a care, it was, in retrospect, a situation that would probably get a par-

ent arrested today. Emmet’s basement was our location of choice on cold winter nights, and we used it with joyful abandon.

I was reminded of those halcyon days recently, while watching reruns of the TV sitcom, “That 70’s Show.” Five teens growing up in Wisconsin in the 70’s, spend a good chunk of the show smoking pot and drinking beer in the main character’s basement.

The parents are right upstairs — yet, like Emmet’s — never venture below. This caused my synapses to fire — there must have been thousands of such sanctuaries scattered throughout the country! Still, using my old man as a barometer, I just couldn't fathom that a majority of the parents from back in the day respected the basement sanctuary theory. Yet, as this sitcom clearly shows, others, in far flung parts of these United States, had a parental force field up and operational at the top of the basement stairs. How many others? I spent many restless nights pondering.

When my boys became teens, my finished basement became a hangout for the neighborhood kids. I swore to myself that I would not stand idly by as youthful miscreants committed unlawful acts under my roof. NOT ON MY WATCH! I made surprise visits: laundry, tools, missing dog leash. Any excuse to venture into the forbidden zone.

Mayor Announces 3-K For All Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced 3-K for All, an ambitious effort to provide free universal, high-quality fullday, early childhood education for every three-year-old child regardless of family income.

According to city hall, 3-K for All will build on the success of Pre-K for All – which has more than tripled the number of four-year-olds enrolled in Pre-K. They state it is part of a broader effort to create a continuum of high-quality early care and education programs for NYC children from birth to five years old.

The city’s aim is to serve over 11,000 three-year-olds in the new and enhanced program.

3-K for All is part of the Mayor’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda, which aims to ensure that by 2026, 80 percent

of students graduate high school on time and two-thirds of graduates are college ready.

The Department of Education reports 989 Staten Island children are now enrolled in universal pre-K. "There are five times as many kids enrolled in full-day pre-K in Staten Island today than when I took office," de Blasio said.

The dates for expanding 3-K to SI are still to be announced.

The first ever Forest Avenue Restaurant Crawl and Street Festival will run from 2 to 5 p.m. from Bard Avenue to Hart Boulevard. Forest Avenue will be closed off between those streets for an afternoon of food tasting, musical performances, and rides and attractions for the entire family.

They have also organized smaller activities. Adults have begun to ask for programs, too.

This activity has brought others to come and use the park.

All recognize the important need to get out, socialize and be part of a community again.

2 Moms From Westerleigh is now organizing an end of school picnic in the park for June. They would like to hear from any kid-friendly musicians who can donate their time.

“Our biggest wish now is to get that playground. That’s something the kids can use every day,” Pesce says.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Kelly says. “As one person, we couldn’t do this. But together…!”

The Staten Island Museum Goes Big

By July 2017, the Staten Island Museum will consolidate all visitor services and programming to its flagship location at Snug Harbor.

Located in a renovated and restored historic building, the state-of-the-art museum facility opened in the sprawling landmark district in 2015.

After July 1, its original building at 75 Stuyvesant Place in St. George will still provide storage for the museum’s extensive

natural science collections. It will also serve as a staging area for exhibitions and as a vital research facility accessible by appointment.

This marks the launch of the final phase of the Museum’s long awaited capital expansion that will conclude in 2022 with the completed renovation of the contiguous building (‘B’) at Snug Harbor. Plans include an additional 10,000 square feet (to the existing 13,000 in building

Weatherproofing Your Home

Most people think of weatherproofing your home as something you do for the winter but weatherproofing for the summer is just as important. Proper weatherproofing in the summer can reduce your cooling cost drastically.

Weatherproofing for the summer and winter is basically the same with minor changes.

Steps to general waterproofing: 1 - Check caulk around windows and doors (both inside and outside). Where needed, remove old caulk and recaulk.

2 - Check all doors leading to the outside and garages.

If there is a gap between the door and the floor, install a door sweep (the kind with the rubber strip is best). If there are gaps around the sides or the top of the door, install self-stick weather stripping.

3 - Make sure all windows are closing properly. If windows do not close properly, you can use some foam insulation to fill the gaps in the summer. In the winter you may need to put plastic over the windows.

4 - Is there a lot of sun coming through the window? In

the winter that is good, it will help keep the house warm. In the summer the sun shining through adds a lot of heat to your house. You may want to keep the blinds closed during warmer days to help cool down the house.

5 - Service your heating and/or cooling system once a year (at the beginning of each season). Make sure the filters are clean as well as the coils.

6 - If you have any exposed ducts, it is always a good idea to make sure they are insulated. You can lose a lot of heating and cooling through uninsulated ducts.

7 - Check all storm doors, make sure they close properly and there is little to no light coming through around the edges.

Some local services offer home checks for reasonable rates. Some will even deduct the cost of the home check from the price if you end up needing work done.

So if you're unable to check everything for yourself, call someone in. It may save you more than you end up paying.

Chicken and Rice

Ingredients - 1 cup of raw rice (regular white or brown rice) - 3 boneless and skinless chicken breasts.

- 1 package of dry onion soup mix - 1 can of cream of mushroom soup - 3/4 onion, roughly chopped - 1 package of mushrooms, chopped (optional) - 1 bundle of spinach, chopped (optional) - 2 cups of water - Salt and pepper to taste Directions 1. Preheat your oven to 320 degrees. Lightly grease a casserole dish and place your raw rice

evenly on it. Slice the chicken and place it over the rice.

2. Add the chopped onion. If you're going to use the mushrooms and the spinach, now it's the time to add them too. It'll add some extra vitamins to the mixture! If you're not a fan of this combination, try other veggies instead. Just remember that when baking tomato or zucchini, you have to be careful because they add more liquids to the mix.

3. Mix the cream of mushroom soup, the dry soup mix and the 2 cups of water. Season to taste and pour the mixture over the rest of the ingredients.

4. Cover and cook for 1 hour. Uncover and cook for 1 hour. Let cool 10-15 minutes before serving.

Vertebrae Fractures

Vertebral compression fractures are the most common type of osteoporotic fractures and are associated with significant disability, morbidity, and mortality. Anyone who has had one will tell you that the pain can be severe and may last for months.

In many cases only part of the vertebral body collapses giving the vertebra a wedge-like shape.

When this occurs in the mid or thoracic spine it causes the spine to bend forward giving the patient a stooped posture. Twenty five percent of post-menopausal women in the US are estimated to have had a vertebral fracture, and that figure increases with advancing age. Diuretics (water pills) have long been thought to

play a role in osteoporosis and its related fractures.

Recently a study was published about diuretic use and vertebral fractures. It used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, an ongoing study that began in 1976 and has enrolled 121,700 nurses aged 30-55 years. The analysis used data from 2002 and 2012 from 55,780 women who answered a questionnaire that was mailed to them. The respondents were asked about their use of thiazide diuretics (HCTZ, Hygroton) and loop diuretics (Lasix, furosemide) and their history of fractures.

Thiazide diuretics are used in treating hypertension and heart disease and in older US adults.

prescribed medication. Thiazide diuretics decrease urinary calcium excretion thereby improving calcium balance but may cause hyponatremia (low serum sodium). A number of studies have linked hyponatremia to an increased fracture risk. On the other hand loop diuretics, used mostly for heart disease and heart failure, increase urinary calcium excretion, which could lower bone mineral density, but rarely cause hyponatremia.

The study found that women who took thiazide or loop diuretics had a 1½ times greater risk of vertebral fracture. This result was surprising in that thiazides, because of their positive effect on calcium balance, were long thought to not be associated with fractures. The authors concluded that the increased fracture risk with thiazides was due to the side effect of hyponatremia. A low serum sodium activates osteoclasts which are bone cells that break down bone, thereby thinning the bone and making fracture more likely. Loop diuretics were also associated with an increased fracture risk as was

The North Shore Local expected because they cause loss of calcium. Interestingly however was that thiazides caused an increased risk of vertebral fractures but a decreased risk of hip fractures. This difference between spine and hip fracture risk was thought to be from differences in mechanical loading, geometry, bone microarchitecture, and other factors.

Other risk factors for osteoporosis were looked at and these include smoking, low calcium intake, low BMI (small, thin women), low or no physical activity, and race (white and Asian women have a higher risk). If you have osteoporosis or have an increased risk of developing it and are taking diuretics you might want discuss your use of them with your doctor. Remember too that thiazides can have other negative health consequences like raising blood sugar and lipid levels. But please always talk to your doctor before discontinuing any medication that you are taking.

SI Advocates Honored For a decade and a half Staten Island’s faith leaders have been joining together and working together during the month of April.

Their interfaith initiative known as “Community Days” sponsors health fairs, blood drives, neighborhood cleanups, visits to the sick, food drives, free clothing giveaways and more through SI’s churches, synagogues, temples and mosques.

As writer Melinda Gottlied noted, “Community Days is a force of unity and understanding among Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and Hindus. The month-long endeavor benefits everyone on Staten Island.”

Working for the Staten Island Advance, reporter Maura Grunlund gained recognition for her coverage of the interfaith community on Staten Island.

A deacon at Port Richmond’s St. Philip's Baptist Church, McBeth was recognized for his work against gun violence and street crime on the North Shore. He is one of the founders of "Occupy the Block.”

Strengthening Public Safety: After experiencing a decline in violent crime both citywide and on the North Shore, I am alarmed by the recent rash of shootings on Staten Island. The year 2016 had seen fewer than 1,000 shootings citywide for the first time in recorded history, with 36 of those shootings occurring in Staten Island, down 14 percent from 2015. Our Cure Violence program, Occupy the Block/Mothers Against Senseless Killings, NYPD’s community policing efforts and other citywide and community-based initiatives have likely been significant factors in this reduction. One shooting, however, is one too many. Every resident should feel safe in their neighborhoods. Every parent should feel secure sending their child

to school, to the park or to the store. This is why I have secured millions of dollars for after-school programs, sports and arts programming and other positive, community-building activities for our youth—all investments for a brighter future.

As summer approaches, I am calling not only for a redoubling of efforts but for increased communication and collaboration among all who are working to keep our streets safe. Earlier this week, I met with the Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence, the NYPD and several key stakeholders to continue our communication and collaboration, and to craft additional community-based solutions to this complicated societal problem.

Yackety-Yak Let’s talk about talking. Who talks the most in your circle of family and friends? Any clear windbag winners? Any yakety yakkers? Anybody able to talk the tin ears off a brass jug? Or whatever the expression is.

People (my wife) tells me I don’t listen, but that doesn’t mean I can’t hear. That doesn’t mean I can tune out the blowhards, the windbags, and the acutely annoying. Unfortunately, I hear them until my ears bleed.

I was reminded how I’m at the mercy of those who drone on a recent ride in a car service. The guy wouldn’t stop. I don’t re-

member much of what he said but traffic is best on Mondays and Thursdays are the worst and sometimes he beats the GPS by a minute or two. And then his voice just started to sound like a dentist drill with a Russian accent.

I was at the point where I was just about able to tune him out but then he said something and cracked himself up and his evil villain laugh made me pay attention again. But I didn’t dare ask him what was so funny and then he went on about people not knowing how to drive. And on and on.

I guess the guy fell into the cat-

egory of the yakety yakker – people who just have to fill the empty air with sounds. For them silence isn’t golden, it’s life threatening.

They must fight it with all their words. In the car they read billboards and other signs aloud for no apparent reason other than to ward off silence, the silent killer. Sometimes they even read the car’s make and model that might be inscribed on the glove compartment or floor mat.

It will be quiet for about twenty seconds and suddenly they will blurt, “Hyundai.� When no one responds they then say “Sonata� or “Elantra.�

Again no one responds so they look out the window and say, “Speed Limit 25 miles an hour.�

Now, first date silence in a car might be a little awkward and it’s understandable if you babble a little. But the reason Henry Ford put a radio in a car is so you didn’t have to talk all the time.

And you know if you babble too much there won’t be another date. Babbling is for brooks.

God knows, if one of my brothers goes on too long with a story we start acting like a ground

And the rest of us suffer in silence. Or at least the silence we long for.

I’m doing too much talking and I haven’t even gotten to the blowhards but if you’re a nervous nelly and you’re yapping and someone hasn’t responded with words, a chuckle, a nod, whatever, that means they are begging you to shut up. Look above their heads and see the thought bubble. PLEASE SHUT UP! PLEASE, I SAID PLEASE! Uh-oh, I just realized some people I know might think I’m talking about them. I’m not. But it’s ok if you give me the silent treatment.

Titone’s Budget Win for Workers According to Assemblyman Matthew Titone, Albany’s new 2017/2018 Budget includes funding that will help ensure direct care workers are paid fair, competitive wages so New Yorkers can continue to receive the vital care and services they need.

"These workers have the training, patience, and dedication to help our most vulnerable succeed, bring them happiness and lead better lives every day,” Titone said.

“Their assistance is vital.

Now we can start paying them the fair, living wage they deserve."

Current low wages have resulted in a staffing crisis putting the most vulnerable at even greater risk. The poor pay forces many direct care workers to leave the field and the people dependent on their care because the com-

pensation is inadequate to care for their own families.

When the executive budget was released with no funding for a direct care worker wage increase, assemblypersons fought to ensure the final state budget dedicated $14 million in 2017-18 and $146 million in 2018-19 to fund a two-year, living wage initiative for direct care workers. Direct care workers and direct support staff will receive a 3.25 % raise as of January 1, 2018. Additionally, direct care workers, direct support staff and clinical staff will receive a 3.25 % increase on April 1, 2018.

The increases will benefit direct care professionals supported by the State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, the Office of Mental Health and the Office for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

Rotary Club Hosts 26th Annual Ecology Day Final arrangements are in place for the Rotary Club of Staten Island’s 26th Annual Ecology Day, according to Rosemarie Scampas, president of the Rotary Club of Staten Island.

The event takes place in the JC Penney wing of the Staten Island Mall on Sunday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Our Ever-Changing Island Habitat.” Students Island-wide were invited to create, enter and display ecological projects demonstrating why a highly-populated area such as Staten Island is seeing more and more wildlife in its neighborhoods. Examples of SI ‘urban wildlife’ include deer, turkeys, geese, fish, raccoons and more.

Projects this year will showcase deer enclosure fences, introducing predators to the Island in order to

control the deer population, what can be done with the threat of wildlife infestation in our community, science fieldwork such as Trout in the Classroom, Adopt-ABluebelt, STEAM Soap Box Derby, and glue stick recycling projects and more will be on display.

Participating schools will be judged by Rotarians to compete for grants of up to $400 that will be presented to the winners at a luncheon meeting of the Club in June.

Con Edison is once again a major underwriter of the event.

The Rotary presents Ecology Day with the support of General Growth Properties, which operates the Staten Island Mall and provides space for the event.

Rotary continues to fundraise each year for the event and for the grants.

Busy Month At SI Children’s Museum

It’s a busy month of May for the Staten Island Children’s Museum.

Here’s a small sample of what activities they have in store.

Celebrate Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo! Flour Tortillas and Flowers for Mom will be held on Friday, May 5, at 3 and 4 p.m.

Learn culinary vocabulary, cooking with flour and learn how to make flour tortillas!

It’s part of the ongoing Kidz Cook program, sponsored by Shoprite.

The Sundog Children’s Theater presents “A Springtime Carol” on

Saturday, May 6, at 12:15 p.m. It’s the story of a grumpy king who tries to ban Spring, only to be visited by Mother Nature's court, in this springtime twist on a Christmas Carol.

Visit the museum on Sunday, May 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. for Flowers for Mom. Create a beautiful paper flower lei to give to Mom for Mother’s Day in the Walk-In workshop.

On Sunday, May 13, it’s Flower Anatomy, a Second Saturday family program. From noon to 1 p.m. kids and families can learn what the parts of a flower for and what their functions are. They’ll learn about flower anatomy through guided flower dissections. The program is sponsored by Con Edison.

Sunday, May 21, is dedicated to Ferries and Other Seafaring Adventures from 1 to 5 p.m.

From 1 to 4 p.m. will be Nautical Art where you can create sea shell mosaics.

For a special musical treat from 2 to 5 p.m. take a short stroll over to the Noble Maritime Collection and listen to traditional Maritime folk songs with their monthly Sea Shanty Sessions!

From 1 to 4 p.m. show your support for U.S. servicemen and women and veterans by making your own floral Memorial Day red, white and blue carnations to display in honor of our fallen heroes.

On Monday, May 29, the museum will be closed for Memorial Day. But get ready for even more activities, learning and fun for next month! On Saturday, June 3, it’s Come one! Come all! The Staten Island Children’s Museum will be holding its annual Carnival and Science Spectacular fundraiser.

(Rain date is Sunday, June 4).

From 1 to 5 p.m. this old-fashioned festival will include carnival rides and games, mad scientist shows, a bounce house, an obstacle course, spinning tubs, live animals, STEAM demonstrations and activities, robots, a solar car, lasers, and entry to the museum.

Pre-Sale Tickets will be available until June 1 for $13 per person. At the gate, the tickets will be $15.

Staten Island Children’s Museum mission is to “nurture the creativity and curiosity natural to all children…and to demonstrate vividly that learning can be exciting and fun. Located at 1000 Richmond Terrace, on the grounds of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Gardens, they offer regular and changing exhibitions and programs with 40,000 square feet of interactive exhibits as well as a 4-acre East Meadow, and a picnic and performance pavilion.

PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING: THE WINNERS ARE…

After a months-long process, Councilmember Debi Rose has announced that North Shore residents have developed and selected two projects that will now be funded in the coming year’s budget.

Students at six North Shore schools will have new laptops and smart boards. The Advanced School Learning Upgrades project will fund 240 laptops, 12 carts and printers, and 1 digital blackboard at PS 16, PS 18, PS 19, PS 31, PS 44 and PS 78. The project will cost $415,000.

Those who visit Clove Lakes Park will have new exercise equipment to stay fit and healthy. The Clove Lakes Park Adult Exercise Equipment project will fund the installation of 5 to 6 pieces of adult

In Memorial Glen W. McCourt Glen W. McCourt, 71, passed away unexpectedly at Richmond University Medical Center on April 26, 2017. He was a resident of the Clove Lakes Nursing Home for the past 5 years.

McCourt was born in Stapleton but lived most of his life in Castleton Corners. He was a member of the Willowbrook Park Baptist Church for most of his life, where he served as a greeter.

His hobby was his collection of Matchbox Cars and Hess Trucks, and collected over several hundred.

He especially enjoyed his family and his eight grandchildren.

McCourt is survived by his

loving wife, Elizabeth M. (nee Johnsen), his adored son, James G. (Angela) McCourt, and his beloved daughters, Jennifer B. Deriu and Amy R. Steensen (Sigurd).

He is also survived by his brother, Gene McCourt and sister, Bonnie Michael, and his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Cherubini Mc-Inerney Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Children’s Bible Fellowship at 250 Nimham Road, Carmel, New York 10512 would be appreciated.

Enrique Arocho Enrique Arocho was a wonderful father, grandfather, son, and friend. He was a resident of Staten Island for over 40 years. He also lived in Manhattan and the Bronx as a young man.

He was a graduate of Chelsea Vocational and Technical High School. He went on to become an Electrician/ Signalman in the NYC Transit Authority. He enlisted in the US Army and rose to the rank of Private First Class (PFC), graduating in the US Army South Eastern Signal School. He served in the 51st Signal Battalion in Korea during the Vietnam War era and was honorably discharged for his service.

Enrique considered his greatest achievements being able to be a provider and father to his children who he educated at Rochester Institute of Technology, The State University of New York, New York University and Pace University up to their graduate degrees.

He lived a full life and was known for his generosity and dedication to his family.

Enrique is survived by his youngest daughter, Victoria Arocho, oldest son Antonio Enrique Arocho and his wife Delmy, grandson Michael-Gabriel L. Arocho, sisters, Anna Arocho-Bentancourt and Rosalie Arocho-Perez, the mother of Enrique’s children, Teresa Gomez-Arocho, and other surviving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held at Holy Family RC Church. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

GOLF NOTES

The weather may still be a bit chilly, but everything is heating up in the local golf circles.

Last weekend brought several hundred sports fans to the beautiful Mount Loretto grounds on the south shore for the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame annual event. The ceremony, held at the CYO-MIV Center, quickly filled for the noon induction of seven people from our borough to the 22nd version of awards as well as permanent installment to that long list of athletes as well as folks connected with sports to 139.

Those appointed included Gerry Lawless, Leslie Stahl Clauson, Karin Muller Crowley, John Hagemann, John Semerad, Pete Pullara and PGA golf professional Eddie Sorge.

Sorge was the golf professional at Silver Lake Golf Course for more than 25 years before retiring in1988. Sorge grew up in the Concord area of Staten Island and we were around when he came on the junior golf scene which he quickly dominated. Before entering the Air Force in 1954 he won the Staten Island Amateur in fine fashion that included a still-standing front nine record of 28 at the Richmond County course. He continued his strong play in the military by winning the 1956 Strategic Air Command as well as the Western Command Championship.

To the surprise of no one, Sorge returned from the Air Force and won the Staten Island Amateur in 1959 to become the first player ever to win that title twice. He went

by Tom Flannagan on to win or finish close in just about everything he entered. The one thing we will always remember is the way in which he would flash such confidence with the putter.

Nowadays, you will see tour pros strike a lengthy putt and “walk it into the hole” to loud applause like it was something new. Well, we’re here to tell you that Eddie Sorge was doing that back in the 1950s!

SIGA DAY The Staten Island Golf Association drew 90 players to the Silver Lake course for the first round of the annual SIGA championship last Sunday.

The round was opened at 7 a.m. with a bagpiper as well as contestants paying tribute to Silver Lake Club lifelong member Daniel Blaine who passed suddenly last week.

Dan Pizutto, SIGA President was forced to alter play at the par 3, sixth hole due to a large oak tree being struck by lightning just left of the green. The area was roped off since the tree was stripped of its bark and an odor of burning wood prevailed. Guess you would get a free drop due to “casual lightning”!

The second round of the SIGA Golf Day event will be played at LaTourette on Saturday, May 20.

Diane Buglioli Moore Catholic High School will hold its annual golf outing and dinner today, May 4th at the South Shore Golf Course at which time they will induct Diane Buglioli, president of the Staten Island Women’s Golf Association as well as Sharon McAdams into the school’s

Great Call By The Hall

Just three girls from the neighborhood.

Last Saturday at the CYOMIV Center in Pleasant Plains, as far as one can get from the North Shore and still be on Staten Island, seven inductees entered the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame, and for the first time in the 22 years it has been around, three women were in the latest class.

That had never happened before. Since its inception in 1995, the Hall of Fame doors have opened to 146 people, and the huge majority of that number are men. Is that wrong? Did committee members over the years miss the boat? Yes and no.

Yes, in that the committee has always been dominated by men, and many of those very men have very little knowledge, or perhaps interest, in women's sports.

Yes, in that even today many sports fans, young or old, have little interest in things like the WNBA, professional women's golf or tennis, volleyball, softball or women's track and field.

Only when the Olympics roll around do great female athletes get their just due, and our greatest praise is often reserved for figure skaters, swimmers and gymnasts.

It seems like then, and only then, are the incredible skills and elite qualities of our women recognized.

Until around 1970, America hadn't given any of our great female athletes a chance to shine. There were no NCAA college scholarships for women. Very few high schools had basketball, softball, volleyball or track teams. Basketball, for

God's sake, had the girls playing in skirts and had players who could only play defense!

No, because the press, national and local, was very slow to be fair in coverage. I'll give you the best example of that.

I was an Advance sportswriter and columnist for 20 years (1968 to 1988). Not ONCE was I assigned to cover a women's sports event!

That changed when I became a broadcaster for Time Warner Cable. From 1989 to 2012, Time Warner gave a great deal of coverage to high and college basketball and softball. Our girls were getting the exposure they always deserved, both in print and on television.

Which brings me to last Saturday and the three girls from OUR neighborhood.

Gerry Lawless was a superstar basketball player under legendary St. Peter's coach Joan Gumb in the 1960's. Her uncle was Jack McGinley (Hall of Fame St. Peter's coach).

Gum was in the original Hall of Fame class (and first women) in 1995.

I saw Gerry play. She could, and did, compete with boys’ high school players down at the old Cromwell Center. So why did coach Gumb go into the Hall 22 years ago, but her best player got in five days ago? This was long overdue.

Lesley Stahl Clauson was a great vollleyball player for Curtis HS and later on for Northwestern University in the 70's. She was a member of the U.S. Pan American team in 1975. A girl from Staten Island competing against girls from California and Arizona (where volleyball was huge) and proving she belonged with the best

of the best.

Finally, Ms. Stahl is where she belongs.

The third women inducted is near and dear to my heart.

I had the honor of presenting Karin Mueller Crowley to the crowd at the CYO-MIV Center.

Previously, I had been asked to do the same for Rich Kotite (NFL head coach for the Eagles and Jets) and Matt Galante (MLB coach for the Astros and Mets).

But this was different. This was special. This was the girl I coached when she first began playing organized softball for the Sacred Heart Varsity softball team in the spring of 1988.

From that first practice on a cold, windy March day at Walker Park, I knew Karin was going to be great.

And she was. At Curtis for four years, at UConn, where she was a Big East All-Star selection four times, and as a professional softball player.

Prior to last Saturday, there were three women softball players in the SI Hall of Fame, Darlene Crowe, Shannon Payne and Aileen Aponte. All three were great pitchers.

Karin Mueller Crowley was a great PLAYER. This star played every position at UConn except first base and pitcher and she hit a softball harder, and further, than anyone I ever watched play. And that's how I introduced her to the crowd, "the greatest softball player in the history of this borough."

Just three girls from OUR neighborhood. Girls rule! **** Congratulations to the other four inductees.

John Semerad, baseball and basketball star out of Monsignor Farrell and Seton Hall. Big John is currently the Director of the YMCA on Staten Island and as I told Karin Mueller Crowley, "that guy hit baseballs like you hit softballs."

John Hagemann, long-time MLB scout who signed Jason Marquis and was the first scout to tell the Atlanta Braves they needed to sign John Smoltz and Chipper Jones.

Pete Pullara, a football star at New Dorp HS under Sal Somma and at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Pete is currently the head grounds-

Page 23 keeper at Yankee Stadium.

And last, but certainly not least, my friend Ed Sorge Sr., who once owned the course records at Silver Lake, LaTourette, South Shore and Richmond County. Seems impossible, right! And the golfers who were already in the Hall, Jim Albus, Bill Britton and Pete Meurer, Sorge gave lessons to!

Ok, we promised last week we would give NORTH SHORE LOCAL loyalists the Kentucky Derby winner. It's the hardest race in any calendar year to handicap on race day. To try and do it five days prior and before post positions is insane!

But here goes.
