Notes From Community Board 1

Pools, emergency rooms, parks and parking lots were among the topics covered at the Community Board 1 meeting on Tuesday, April 11. Nearly sixty people attended the evening meeting at All Saints Episcopal Church.

Representatives from various groups spoke about rebuilding Cromwell Center, Participatory Budgeting, scheduled bike tour street closures, updates from the Committee to Save Mount Manresa, and a petition to landmark St. Mary’s Church.

Ocean Breeze Park administrator Lauren Primerano gave a presentation on what the center

has to offer for toddlers, kids, teens, adults and seniors.

“We have a huge range of programming, physical fitness, classes, adaptive activities and events.” Information about ongoing programs and upcoming events like the Sitting Volleyball Tournament, Ocean Breeze Health Fair, or Superhero Movie Night can be found at www.OceanBreeze@ park.nyc.gov.

Chairman Nicholas Siclari stressed the need for CB1 involvement in the development of RUMC’s multi-million-dollar emergency room facility.

“It’s the most important thing on the North Shore. It will af-

fect every area and every part of Staten Island,” he said.

Two resolutions drew the most debate.

After much discussion, the Board voted not to support the use of NYC Parks land to build a 15-space parking lot for the Alice Austen House museum.

Some argued this would create more access to this cultural resource. Others however cited opposition from the immediate neighborhood.

A motion to not support opposition to locating the City’s proposed new pool at Petrides Educational Complex was also presented. Board members stated they did not oppose other possible North Shore sites.

“But without having the official project location, size, and specifications, we just don’t have the information at this time to know what we are voting on.”

By a close vote, the no-support motion passed.

City Hall for a week

The Mayor Meets Staten Island

On Monday morning, April 10, Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived, on time, by ferry to start his weeklong official foray on Staten Island.

His stay is the first stop in the mayor’s "City Hall in Your Borough" initiative. Through it he plans to spend time in each borough, meeting with constituents one on one, touring various locations, making his staff available, and speaking with community groups.

After thanking his SI host Borough President James Oddo, de Blasio said at Borough Hall, “This is the first of a series of weeks where we’re going to go out to each of the boroughs and bring government to the people.

It’s a chance for us to talk to

community leaders and community residents about the things that we’re doing that are relevant to Staten Island.

It’s also a chance to hear concerns and learn better how we can serve.”

Addressing the mayor, BP Oddo said, “The mission is clear, and that is to improve Staten Island. I want to continue to work with you. The mission is what it’s all about and the mission for you and for me is to improve the lives of Staten Islanders.”

The mayor said bringing key staff members from City Hall and city agencies was an important factor of his visit. “It’s a chance for them to focus their energy on this borough, and really get up close to the situations that are happening, things that

people need help with… and places where there’s particular needs.”

The early part of the mayor’s week included a cabinet meeting at borough hall, a stop at the 123rd Precinct to talk about Community Policing, a live appearance on NY1 News Road to City Hall program, and office hours to meet with constituents. It also included a meeting with the BP on critical island issues, joining, with First Lady Chirlane McCray, a meeting of Borough President Oddo’s substance abuse task force, an address at Young Israel of Staten Island, and a late-night road repaving in Prince’s Bay. The week also included a City Resource Fair at Borough Hall on Tuesday and a scheduled, rsvp-only Thursday night town hall meeting at Prall Intermediate School in West Brighton.

About two dozen people lined the curbs across from Borough Hall. Holding banners that read “Mayor de Blasio Save Skylight Center,” they explained that the City is due to shut the doors on their 30-year-old center which provides all types of mental health and substance abuse services.

Though their aim was to catch the eye and attention of the mayor, they were not disappointed that he was in Staten Island.

“Often Staten Island gets the raw end in New York City,” Skylight Executive Director Cathy Holladay said. “He may not agree with us, but this is an opportunity for him to see that some critical things need to be done.”

“It’s a step in the right direction,” noted Assistant Executive Director Diane Hellman, who was there with her young daughter. “We are known as the ‘forgotten borough’, she said. “Maybe now we will be less forgotten”.

Petty Cache ***** Last week, the students of the IS 51 Sports and Arts Science Club delivered a special gift to the Staten Island Zoo. Under the direction of teacher Lisa Giaimo and School Aide Maria Nazi, the students in the Science Club raised over $2,000 to help “Save the Oryx,” a species of antelope that is on the endangered list. The students hand delivered the check to Zoo Director Ken Mitchell who acknowledged that this was the third year the SASF students have helped "save" an animal. "It started two years ago when Mrs. Giaimo and her students gave us a check for $1,000 to help the Amur Leopards," Mitchell said. Last year, and now this year, the check keeps getting bigger and we truly appreciate the hard work the IS 51 students do to help our animals." ***** Shall we swap? A recent metro report indicated a higher percentage of people from Hudson County, New Jersey commute to Manhattan than from Staten Island. Some wisecrackers suggested a swap: Richmond County become part of New Jersey and Hudson County become part of the City. ***** The Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, Staten Island's land conservation organization held its Semi Annual Meeting at the Staten Island Zoo. The members and supporters of Protectors of Pine Oak Woods were greeted and updated on walks and efforts by Protectors President Cliff Hagen.

Protectors leads nature walks through proposed and existing parks; mobilizes public opinion to create and enlarge parks; protects existing parks from unwise proposed uses; holds monthly forest restoration workshops to remove harmful vines; and sponsors teens at summer conservation camp. seems to be quite a stir over plans to open the first Staten Island based Shake Shack in our new waterfront retail corridor. This fast food eatery does indeed serve up some tasty items, but the best burgers in Staten Island, and possibly the entire city, are found in several North Shore mom and pop restaurants, like Jody’s, Duffy’s, Craft House and Korzo Club, to name a few. Where would you rather grab a burger? ***** Say it isn’t so. After over 50 years in business, Doody’s will close its Castleton Corners doors for good. Sadly, the store is set to close by May 3. ***** City Councilman Steve Matteo’s e-waste program has been so successful that the mayor plans to make it permanent here and expand it into the other boroughs. To request a pickup for computers, TVs and other electronics banned from disposal, fill out the online application at www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/ contact/services/ewastepickuperewquest or call 311. In Staten Island, if a resident is unable to get their electronics out to the curb, they can call Matteo's office to arrange for a volunteer to come help with the heavy lifting.

We hope other council members will follow suit. ***** Calling all artists. Dan Donovan will be accepting submissions for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. The contest, open to high school students across the country, offers young creators the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents.

One winning submission from each congressional district will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. According to Donovan’s office, students may submit original paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, computer generated art or a combination thereof. Interested students must begin their pieces immediately and register online by May 2 at Donovan.house.gov/ art-competition. Submissions are due by the evening of May 9, when the pol will host an art show with participants and their

The screenings will take place on January 17th, April 25th, July 26th and October 3rd. The screenings will be available to eligible women ages 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past year. All insurance plans will be accepted, and co-pays and deductibles will be waived.

Loose Cannon

TWO OF A KIND

The Brighton Kiwanis Club is having its fourth annual Run and Roast in the latter part of May. This terrific event will be discussed in greater detail on page 10. This article focuses on this year's honorees — two North Shore mainstays who have made “giving back” a guiding force in both their lives. Arnold Obey and Craig “Doc” Campbell may appear to the untrained eye to be an unlikely pairing, but they have a lot in common. Both are family oriented, hard working and community minded.

On Saturday, May 20, 2017, The Arnold Obey Armed Forces Day 5K Road Race, will be held, and all are welcome.

Here on Staten Island, Arnold Obey is a legend — period. A kinder, gentler soul you would be hard-pressed to find, yet, underneath that calm exterior thumps the heart of a fierce competitor, who excelled not only in athletics, but also in the game called life.

Those of a certain age likely remember Arnold as a one thousand point scorer on the Wagner College hoops squad.

He also holds that school’s record in the 100 yard dash, a record that will undoubtedly

never be broken, as it’s now the 100 meters! In addition to the dash, he competed in the long jump and the triple jump.

After graduating, he began his career as a teacher, starting out in 1969 at P.S. 44 in Mariners Harbor. He then taught Social Studies at P.S. 49. He worked his way up to Assistant Principal at P.S. 16 in Tompkinsville, and in 1991 became a Principal at P.S. 31 in New Brighton.

All accomplished while earning a Master’s from Wagner College, and a Professional Diploma from St. John’s.

While educating thousands of kids, he continued to compete. Arnold has finished 36 consecutive New York City Marathons, and has also competed in thousands of other road races. He has been a basketball referee at the high school level and in numerous men’s leagues. He took the lessons and skills acquired on the court and the track and passed them down; coaching first at Wagner, and later at Staten Island Academy.

Arnold Obey has spent his life giving back to this community. As a member of Brighton Kiwanis, United Activities Unlimited, Lifestyles for the Disabled, Community Board 2, Seaview Hospital & Home, he has spent thousands of hours volunteering. He was also a member of SITRAC, an organization that played a major role in Staten Island now having a beautiful new indoor track.

Arnold recently celebrated his anniversary with his lovely wife Cheryl. They are the proud parents of Celisse, Tonya and Karyn, and have three beautiful grandchildren. It

is apropos that Arnold is being honored on Armed Forces Day, as daughter Karyn is making us all proud as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the United States Army.

On Monday, May 22, 2017, Craig “Doc” Campbell will be roasted alive at The Staaten starting at 7PM. “Doc” may not have been as fast as Arnold on terra firma, but in the water he was something else. A four-year varsity

swimmer at The Monsignor Farrell High School, he was selected as an Advance All-Star in 1981. Doc points out that although he may not have excelled in track and field, he still holds the record for the fastest time walking from Duffy’s to Jody’s on a cold Friday night.

After graduating Farrell in 1981, Doc went on and received a degree from Muhlenberg College in 1985. He attended and graduated from New York College of Podiatry in 1990. After completing his residency at Wykcoff Medical Center, he opened his practice on Forest Avenue in 1992.

Doc has been a fixture in West Brighton ever since. Generous with both his time and his money, he is quick to extend a helping hand to those who need it most.

Doc belongs to numerous organizations including the

Doc Campbell’s and Arnold Obey’s contributions to the community cannot be measured merely by memberships in organizations. Residents of the North Shore, who are involved in the community, know how valuable these men truly are. They are like unsung basketball players — who get credit from only the most knowledgeable fans — for doing all the little things right.

Every single day they serve the North Shore and Staten Island.

We are lucky to have them, and it is fitting they are being honored together.

Allison Pond is a great park. With the help of some volunteer hands, it’s going to look even better.

On Saturday, April 22, all are invited to help spruce up this West New Brighton garden spot.

“We’re calling it It’s My Park Day,” said Dr. Steve Abraham, board member of the Randall Manor Residents Association and Chairman of the Friends of Allison Pond Committee.

Having worked on this project for some time with the committee, he explained, “There’s been a need for a number of years. We’re doing it in several sessions, taking each one at a time.”

With the help and approval of the NYC Department of Parks, they will be clearing brush, cleaning up the grounds, removing fallen branches and whatever dead trees they can pull out. They will also be cleaning debris out of the pond and doing some new planting.

The Parks Department will be supplying equipment and supplies and, Abraham said, “They promised us trucks to take away whatever rubbish we can take out without

limit.

“They also sent someone from the horticultural department to tell us what plants we can put in that are native to the area.”

Besides working to get the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts onboard, he said anyone who wants to help needs merely to meet at the park that day.

Allison Pond is a small glacial holdout from the last ice age. It was once the water reservoir for the Sailors Snug Harbor. The park it sits in today was once owned by engineer George William Allison, who deeded it to the city in 1943.

“We have discussed long term plans to dredge the pond back to its original 4 feet depth,” Abraham said. In some places it is now down to one foot due to accumulated mud and silt.

“There is an underground spring that bubbles up in the middle of the pond. It's a beautiful pond. The park is certainly beautiful. And with a little tender loving care it could be one of the gems of Staten Island.”

Some of Staten Island’s highlights evolved naturally, others by design. Award-winning design that it is.

This month the Urban Land Institute announced its picks for its Awards for Excellence in Development for 2017. Out of scores of choices, the Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground in Rossville was one of its exclusive five NYC winners.

ULI New York is part of ULI, a global non-profit based in Washington D.C that counts nearly 40,000 members world-

wide. Their awards recognize “outstanding development projects in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors across New York State that best exemplify ULI’s commitment to responsible land use and creating sustainable, thriving communities.”

The elementary school was the only winner chosen from the borough. The school is named after Kathleen Grimm, who served as deputy to four chancellors of the New York City schools, and died in early 2015.

The building’s architect, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

LLP, and the New York City School Construction, its owner/developer, were honored with the Excellence in Institutional Development award at a dinner on April 3.

ULI notes that Grimm is “the city’s first “net zero” school,” meaning that by using its own self-sustaining, renewable energy and conservation features, it generates an amount of energy equal to what it consumes.

Opened in 2015 it was designed with a wide range of green features to heat, cool and power the 68,000-square foot building, including a wind turbine, geothermal well and solar panels on the roof.

“It’s designed to reduce energy by 50 percent of a typical school, the architects have said,” according to ULI. “The school gets its students moving with bicycles in the gym that students can pedal to create energy, with their wattage displayed on a screen. There’s also a

greenhouse on the roof for students to learn how to grow fruits and veggies.”

ULI is a research group for real estate professionals, promoting “an open exchange of ideas, information, and experience among industry leaders and policy makers dedicated to creating better neighborhoods”.

David Schonbraun, Co-CIO of SL Green Realty Corp., the Awards Committee co-chair, added, “Contenders for the Awards for Excellence know that development means more than just topping out a building. We are excited to find the elite projects that go further by combining the best in planning, design, resilience, market success and community impact.”

Sounds like they’ve got the right place right here on SI. The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability is located at 644 Bloomingdale Road.

More Loose Cannon

I will never forget the day, years ago in Brooklyn Supreme Court, when Judge Michael Brennan let me have it. I can’t recall the legal point at issue, but I do remember being one hundred percent wrong, and his Honor forcefully telling me so, in front of a packed courtroom. After the verbal beatdown he called defense counsel and myself up to the bench, where, grasping at straws, I meekly told him that Regina Walsh is my cousin (I knew she was a friend of the Judge’s wife, Olivia). He smiled and said in a slightly conciliatory tone. “Why didn’t you say so? I would have blasted you much more gently. ” The Judge laughed as I related the story to him as we were sitting in Jody’s recently, discussing something near and dear to his heart — the 4th Annual Brighton Kiwanis Club’s Roast and Run. Judge B gave me a history of the event and

all the good things it has accomplished.

Started by the Brighton Kiwanis, it consists of a 5K Road Race, followed by a roast of the honoree at the Staaten. The money raised by these events benefits charities such as the Staten Island Track and Field Federation, The Back Pack Run — and, has also played a role in sending the Dependent Children of Fort Drum to Camp Kiwanis summer camp.

Judge Brennan advised that the event has, in its short existence, drawn such track luminaries as Bill Rogers and Rod Dixon. This year’s race is no exception, with no less than Olympic Gold Medal winner, Frank Shorter, making a special guest appearance.

This year the run is on May 20, 2017, and the honoree is Arnold Obey. The roast is May 22, 2017, with the victim being Craig “Doc” Campbell, see more about them on page 7.

by Judge Mike Brennan, and in the third year, Mike McVey. The Judge wanted to emphasize the amazing contribution of Tony Gullotta, an Army vet, attorney, and philanthropist, who has been a major contributor to the event since its inception.

Judge Brennan proudly advised that the Run and Roast has raised over fifty-thousand dollars for charity. He wanted to acknowledge the hard work of all the people who help it to run smoothly, and highlighted the efforts of Jeff Benjamin and Mike McVey. Anyone who knows Judge Brennan is aware of the passion he has for our veterans.

A Vietnam vet himself he has championed their cause in both the courtroom and in the neighborhood. His tireless work on behalf of the family of Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, who was killed in action in

Afghanistan, and Sgt. Bryan Dilbernian, who was severely wounded, has been well documented.

It is people like Judge Mike Brennan and the Brighton Kiwanis who make up the fabric of a community. Giving of themselves, with no expectation of reward, they unselfishly work on behalf of those less fortunate.

On Monday, April 17, at 10 a.m. they will be holding a Yizkor Service followed by a Kosher for Passover Bring a Dairy to Share Dish.

Passover or Pesach is a major festival on the Jewish calendar, observed over eight days.

Through their website, Temple Israel explains, “We are remembering the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. We try to relive that experience and realize the

true freedom that our ancestors gained.”

The Seder is the central event. It is a meal shared with family, friends and community where each traditional food is a reminder of those times and tells part of the story.

For instance, charoset, made from chopped nuts, grated apples, cinnamon and sweet wine, symbolizes “the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt.”

Maror is dish where bitter herds serve as a reminder of the bitterness of Jewish slavery

under Egyptian rule. Karpas, a vegetable-usually parsleydipped in salt water during the Seder, represents the tears shed during Egyptian slavery.

Finally, the traditional unleavened bread, matzah, symbolizes the freedom from bondage and the haste with which the Israelites made their exodus towards the Promised Land.

For many on Staten Island and around the world who celebrate Passover, it a tradition and a living story that still speaks to the world today.

Airplane Overhead Storage

The problem: the mad rush to get on an airplane before someone steals the overhead bin nearest your seat The big idea: Airlines storage bins assigned to specific seats.

United Airlines made the news this week by forcing a passenger off a plane after he was told he had to “volunteer” to vacate his seat because the airline had overbooked. Bet this wouldn’t have happened to this guy if my idea was in place.

Ok, so first, a question: Does anyone really want to be the first one on the plane? What, you just can’t wait to cram yourself into an aluminum tube full of grumpy people, no leg room, highly suspect

“food”, and the ever present prospect of hurtling face first into a mountain at 500 mph?

No, we all hate having to suspend our dignity for a few hours in order to reap the joys of far off Caribbean beaches, trendy ski resorts, or Aunt Edna’s fifth wedding. Then why do we all rush to get on the plane as soon as they announce boarding? Surely, with guaranteed seating, getting on first certainly doesn’t get us any advantage (unless it’s oversold, a problem for another column). We won’t get to our destination any faster.

High blood pressure, or hypertension (HTN) is one of the most common human diseases. The risk increases as we age and is more common in men during middle age. In terms of risk, women tend to catch up to men by age 65. It is more prevalent in black people, often developing at an earlier age than in white people. The reason for this is not entirely clear but is thought to be related to levels of certain kidney hormones. It also tends to run in families. It is known as the silent killer as symptoms only appear late in the disease.

Sooner or later nearly everyone will develop HTN. As you know, blood pressure is measured with a cuff around the upper arm. The top number, or systolic, is the pressure

No more rush to be first aboard, no more salmon swimmers going against the flow of passengers trying to get to their bags 10 rows back, no more muffled resentment toward our fellow sky cattle.

It wouldn’t cost the airlines anything more than the price of stickers to mark the overheads, so they should be in favor of it too.

With that problem solved, we could then focus on the truly important airplane issues, like arm rest hogs…

High Blood Pressure

glom all the overhead bin space above our seats, that’s why! The inconsiderate know it’s first come first served for those bins. People in Row 33 are too lazy to lug their bags to the back of the plane, so they get as far as Row 10, and “presto” their junk has a home. Fed up with the latest outrageous baggage fees? No problem, that duffel bag will fit nicely in 3 or 4 overhead racks. On your way to a wedding with a fancy gown? Stretch that bad boy across the entire compartment! No wrinkles for you!

Too bad that the last 10 people onto the plane will have to sit with their knees pressed against their chests, because they only place for their carry-ons is where their feet were supposed to (mostly) fit.

in the arteries when the heart beats. The bottom number, or diastolic, is the arterial pressure during the resting phase of the heart. It is important to use a properly-fitting cuff. If a cuff that is too small for the arm is used the reading will be artificially higher. You can measure your pressure yourself at home using a home monitor. I often suggest to patients that if they use a home monitor they need to bring it during an office visit to be sure it is accurate. Upper arm cuffs tend to be more accurate than wrist cuffs. If you use a monitor in a pharmacy be sure the cuff fits your arm properly.

Most HTN is primary, or essential, meaning that there is no known cause. Secondary HTN is caused by another disease or condition. Examples

of secondary causes include sleep apnea, kidney diseases, thyroid diseases, some tumors, medications like birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants, OTC pain relievers and some prescription medications. Pregnancy may elevate the blood pressure as well.

There are many risk factors for HTN. These include age, race, family history, obesity, physical inactivity, tobacco use, high salt intake, too little potassium or vitamin D, overuse of alcohol, stress and certain chronic conditions (see above). Undiagnosed HTN may cause damage to artery walls for years before it is detected.

Uncontrolled HTN can lead to heart attack and heart disease, strokes, arterial aneurysms (a bulging and weakening of the artery wall), heart failure,

kidney disease, eye problems which if untreated or undetected may lead to blindness and metabolic syndrome (HTN, diabetes, low “good” cholesterol and high “bad” cholesterol and a widened waistline or pearshaped body). In addition, there is mounting evidence that poorly or untreated high blood pressure may lead to early dementia.

Detecting HTN is easy.

Most people starting at age 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least every two years, more often if it’s high.

It’s A Cabaret At Little Victory

Starting next week, the Little Victory Theatre presents the first annual Little Victory Cabaret show. Conceived as a musical revue-type show, it will feature more than a dozen singers and musicians presenting a variety of popular songs from pop classics to standards to memorable stage and screen themes.

The show will hit the footlights on Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, 28 and 29, at 8 p.m. and

on Sunday, April 23, at 2 p.m. at the Little Victory Theatre at 4089 Victory Boulevard.

Council Corner: NEWS YOU MIGHT USE FROM COUNCILWOMAN DEBI ROSE Councilwoman Debi Rose frequently updates her constituents through Facebook and newsletters. Here is a recent post.

With a study now complete and Lyons Pool selected as a site, it is now time to fully fund the rebuilding of the Cromwell Recreation Center so that work can begin as soon as possible.

As a result of my ongoing advocacy, the City Council's official response to Mayor de Blasio's preliminary budget called on the mayor to fully fund Cromwell.

"Staten Island has not broken ground on a single facility for public use on the Northshore waterfront," the budget response stated. "In order to change that, the Council calls on the Administration to include capital funding in the Fiscal 2018 Budget for the reconstruction or replacement of the Cromwell Recreation

Center in Staten Island.”

Mayor de Blasio has signaled that rebuilding Cromwell would be part of our discussions for a potential rezoning of the Bay Street Corridor. However, this is something we need now. Cromwell is not about planning for future growth, it’s about meeting the needs of people already here.

Including Cromwell in our budget response is an important step forward. I will continue fighting to ensure that the rebuilding of Cromwell is included in our final budget agreement. While I am working every day at City Hall to make this rebuilding a reality, I appreciate all the community support behind my rebuilding efforts, especially from Community Board 1, the Let’s Rebuild Cromwell Coalition and others.

I bought a bunch of raffle tickets at a charity dinner in January and all my purchases became pure donations. I rolled that lack of good fortune into three different Super Bowl boxes and didn’t come close. And then…

Well, first let me explain mush.

I’m pretty sure mush is familiar to anyone who’s taken a bus to Atlantic City with a roll of quarters or who’ve lost their rent gambling. But for those who’ve been wise and/or stingy enough to avoid the pitfalls of gambling you might not be familiar with the patron saint of losers: Edward Mush.

Mr. Mush was made famous

in the movie, A Bronx Tale. His losing ways were legendary as he could turn any sure thing into a longshot. But his misfortune wasn’t contained to himself. Anyone in his vicinity, anyone making the same bet as he was done.

In the movie, tellers at the race track betting booth handed him his tickets already ripped up – saving him the trouble.

Mr. Mush was the personification of bad luck and spread his misfortune inadvertently. Evil Eye Fagin, on the other hand, spread bad luck on purpose. He was a character from the Bowery Boys who’d cast a bad luck spell on you if you made eye contact with him and his bugged-out eyeballs.

My luck has been so bad late-

ly I’m starting to wonder if one of you gave me the evil eye and I was too obtuse to notice. Yea, some of my readers can be pretty treacherous. And those are my friends.

I capped off my season of mush with the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I was in an NCAA survivor pool. The premise is you have to pick the winner of ONE game a day. One. The trick is you can’t pick the same team again throughout the tournament.

But I pick with a kiss. The Kiss of Death. The SMU basketball team is out looking for me because I picked them.

I also had a box for the Championship game. You win based on the numbers of the final score.

The guys who ran the box treated me like the racetrack tellers treated Mush. They gave me letters instead of numbers.

My mushiness extended to merely rooting for a team. I didn’t have to have money invested in the outcome. I’d tune into a game just to watch. I’d have no particular preference for either team but I’d usually pull for the underdog.

Invariably, the games I watched

Page 15 had the underdog surge out in front. I’d get caught up in the hysteria and as soon as I committed my rooting interest, the mush gods would awaken. Without fail!

When you’re bad luck you change the channel. Because, you know, logic tells you that if you’re not watching, the team will do better. I will swear that this is true. There have been times when things were going bad that I have left the room and then a few minutes later, from three rooms away, I hear the TV. Good things are happening again. The underdog has a shot. I can’t stay away.

I go in to see what all the excitement’s about. And I mush them.

I’ve even tried rooting for the other team hoping some sort of reverse mush would work.

Doesn’t work.

The scary thing is when you’re on a mush roll you think everything can be affected by your bad luck. I had my car washed the other day and then it rained. Sorry, I mushed the day for the rest of you.

Anyway, I’m betting things get better. Ah, sh*t, I shouldn’t have done that.

ABOUT THAT DIRTY GROUT

If you’re handy around the house, there are many things you can do to cut the cost of home maintenance. Follow us weekly as we cover home repairs and projects for the average homeowner.

For this week’s project we are going to tackle those dirty grout lines.

Homeowners and renters alike struggle with dirty grout lines, but there is sometimes a solution that won’t break the bank.

The reason grout gets so dirty is that grout is very porous. In time the dirt is not only on the surface but has worked its way into the grout. There are times where the dirt has penetrated so deep that you need to have the grout professionally removed and re-grouted, but there are three easy steps you can try first.

Step 1- Mix a strong bleaching solution of ¾ cup of bleach

(you can use 1 cup for white grout) to 1 gallon of water.

Step 2- Using a toothbrush with a stiff bristle (the tooth brushes you by at the dollar store work very well), scrub in line with the grout. Be sure to start in an area that is not in clear view like a corner to test how the grout is reacting to the bleach. Use caution not to

scrub too hard, you can damage the existing grout.

Step 3- Thoroughly rinse the area with clean water then clean with your regular bathroom cleaner to remove any bleach residue. Remember bleach will leave a slippery film, so rinsing alone is not enough.

Once your grout is all cleaned

up, you can use a grout sealer (sold at most hardware stores) to help it stay looking good.

Most important, make sure the work area is very well ventilated (without proper ventilation the bleach fumes can be unsafe), wear rubber gloves (strong bleaching solution will irritate your skin) and wear safety glasses to prevent any splattering of the bleach from getting into your eyes. Saving money is great, but there are no short cuts when it comes to safety.

Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 chicken breast, butterflied, pounded and divided into 2 pieces

Flour Salt and pepper 1-1/2 cup sliced mushrooms 2 cup Marsala wine 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 cloves of minced garlic 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon parsley Directions: Butterfly, pound and divide one chicken breast into 2 pieces. Combine flour, salt and pepper and dredge chicken breasts in the seasoned flour.

Shake off excess. Fry the chicken in a little bit of oil in a hot skillet/pan. Fry 3-4 minutes per side. In same pan, add the sliced mushrooms. Cook until soft. Add the marsala wine, lemon juice, minced garlic, butter and parsley. Cook until sauce has slightly thickened.

Serve on top of pasta or rice.

Spoon sauce over.

My Teacher, My Inspiration

Let’s rewind to first grade.

My teacher would stand in front of the classroom and exclaim over the sounds of restless first graders “ok take out your reading textbook.” The sassy, short little girl with pig tails in the front of the room rolled her eyes. Who was that little girl? Surprisingly it was me. Yes, I despised reading, and even writing. I mostly enjoyed grammar but as I got older, my love for all things having to do with ELA (English Language Arts) disappeared.

However, there was a period of time in which all I did was write. I vividly remember sitting on one of the infamous logs against the fence in the OLGC schoolyard with a blank notebook writing five page stories about absolute nonsense.

That was all thanks to my second grade teacher, Mrs. Wilk.

Her love and enthusiasm for the poems and stories she read in class were contagious and I too became a bibliophile. I constantly would ask to go to the school library, eager to get my hands on my next adventure. Sadly, second grade went by too quickly, and somehow my love of books went with it as well. Until last year!

The “penthouse”, as the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders like to call it, was a completely different ballpark. Sixth grade went by too fast, and my love for ELA wasn’t rekindled at all.

Then a miracle happened. Mrs. Wilk was now my seventh grade teacher. I don’t think any other teacher could’ve made me love ELA more than she did. Now I read poetry on a daily basis, and

on my free time I write articles.

Without Mrs. Wilk I wouldn’t be where I am today. Her dedication and love towards each of her students are things you don’t often get from other teachers. Not only does Mrs. Wilk teach at OLGC, but she is a dance instructor at Brandy’s Dance Unique. A dancer and an ELA fanatic! It is like me in adult form! One thing Mrs. Wilk instilled in me is to always “go with my gut.” She told The Local that “when you act in a way that your heart and soul are driving you then there can be no regrets, only rewards.” She clearly strives to bring out the best in all of her students. My hatred towards ELA turned into such a strong love, and that was all thanks to Mrs. Wilk.

Mrs Wilk has not only taught me so much, but also my fellow classmates and everyone that comes into her path. I asked some of my classmates how they feel about Mrs. Wilk Here are some of the responses: “She is more than just a teacher, she is a role model” (Grace Hyland); “ Mrs. Wilk has always supported me in everything I’ve done” (Juliana Biondi); “ Mrs. Wilk is the best teacher I’ve ever had” (Meaghan Dicks); and “ Mrs. Wilk has been an inspiration to me” (Amanda Mascia). Overall, I think I can speak for all of us, Mrs. Wilk continues to inspire us and help us with whatever we need help with. I am so grateful for everything she has done for me, and I am incredibly lucky to have been taught by such a dedicated and inspirational teacher. Without Mrs. Wilk, I wouldn’t be writing this article!

Cate O’Hare Moran, the show’s director, had a similar thought.

“My daughter, Summer, has been involved in many cabarets in NYC. It is such an enjoyable evening. When the Little Victory Theatre opened, I saw how lovely the space was and I just thought to myself what a lovely venue to produce a cabaret similar to what she has done.”

She says people can expect “an absolutely delightful evening of extremely talented vocalists singing some of their favorite songs, and get to know some of the extraordinary talent they've seen on Staten Island.

“Since this is the first cabaret, I wanted to ensure we have strong singers.” Because they wanted to keep it simple right now, what she looked for were “extraordinary vocalists with songs in their ‘back pocket,’ she said.

“We have extremely strong talent, and I know what they

She says that enthusiasm has been very high among the performers, especially with this being the first show of this type.

“It is my goal to give both playwrights and actors and others a chance to perform and have their shows brought to life at the Little Victory,” Thompson said.

“I like the intimacy here for this cabaret. It really lends itself to connecting with the audience, bantering with the audience and the talent, and just the close engagement of performer and entertainer that other venues and types of "theater" aren't always able to achieve,” Moran notes.

Breakfast With The Easter Bunny

Saturday was all about the kids at the Staten Island Zoo’s annual Breakfast with Our Easter Bunny.

On April 8, the zoo hosted more than 160 adults and children for a fun filled morning which started with a hot breakfast buffet, music from Patrick Raftery of the Rock-aSilly Band, and of course pictures with the Easter Bunny.

Children were also treated to real-life animal encounters, including being able to pet a

real large white rabbit.

Next, kids lined up outside on the zoo grounds for the start of two fast moving, colorful egg hunts, one for older children and one for the younger ones.

Afterwards children and their families enjoyed the zoo’s host of animals from owls to sheep to kangaroos, and rides on the carousal.

When asked if she had fun at the event, one young participant summed it all up with a resounding, “Yes!”

Obituaries Rose Maniscalco

Rose Maniscalco (nee Peck), 83, died peacefully at Silver Lake Nursing Home on April 8, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Rose was born on September 26, 1933 in the Bronx. She moved to Staten Island, in 1963 and was married to her late husband, Raymond Maniscalco who passed away in 1992.

She worked for Bayley Seton

Hospital as a Nursing Assistant.

Rose enjoyed bingo, cooking and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving children, Jennifer (James) Pecorale, Louis and Helena Maniscalco and Christine Maniscalco. Beloved sister of John Peck and loving grandmother of James Dean, Stephen, Sophia Rose and Raymond.

Masters Sunday at the local golf courses wasn’t much different than any other Sunday.

Throngs of players headed for the courses to get in their own rounds before heading for a seat beneath a television set and watching the professionals ply their trade in the final round of the world’s most prestigious golf event.

“Quite different from the way we played today,” said one of the regulars at Silver Lake Golf Course Veranda who had finished touring the Lake course in the usual Sunday game.

“Speak for yourself,” said Rich Wismer who had just annexed the club’s annual President’s trophy by defeating John Quinn on the final hole. The conversation among the team players was low key and not many were anxious to discuss their scores. It didn’t take long to hear the complaints about the course playing so difficult.

aerated and top-dressed. Add to that the heavy rains that deluged the course over the past week. “It certainly reduced driving distance and putting was absolutely not fun,” said Lake regular Jim O’Halloran.

“It was the best weather we’ve had this spring so let’s not cry about the poor play here and get set for the Masters,” said Al “Chicago” Cosenza who called out, “Let’s have a pool”!

Joe Tuite had plenty to contribute to the chatter about the Masters simply because he spent several days at Augusta earlier in the week with his son, Stephen. “One of the greatest experiences ever. We had an invitation to stay at a private home and guest passes for each day along with a tremendous tour of the properties as well as a chance to meet and watch all of the top players in action,” said the Silver Lake Club officer who also had the photos on his phone.

Mike Sanborn, veteran coach of the champion St. Peter’s golf team, was also present for the gathering on the Veranda and we squeezed some information from him about the upcoming high school season.

Sanborn, perhaps the most seasoned golf coach in school golf, has compiled an impressive record in his 10 years of coaching the Eagles. The last six years as head coach, he won the division title each year. His teams won 38 match championships as well as one city-wide title. “We had some great players and they’ve all gone on to continue playing at college,” said Sanborn. Chris Gallo was always determined to play at Clemson and is there now. One of the strongest

high school players on Staten Island, Gallo found such tough company at Clemson that he has started playing on the “Club Team.” Brent Fredericksen went on to Florida University Gulf Coast (Division 1) team. The other Peters’ star , Justin Sanchez, is part of the Wagner College team.

“Despite being 0 and 3, I’m still optimistic about the new team” said the coach. “While we have no seniors, we have kids who really want to play and learn the game of golf.

That’s a big part of building a strong team.”

Jeremy Sanchez has built experience and will pick up the team in due time. Sophomore Matt Repiak just took an interest in the game last season and appears “hooked.” He even landed a job in the Silver Lake Restaurant so he’d be close to those practice sessions.

Greg DeAngelo, veteran golfer and clubmaker is employed at his favorite South Shore Golf Course and tells us that the Huguenot layout is a bit damp, but in fine shape.

Joe Moresco.

Our condolences to the family and friends of Joe Moresco, 85, who passed on March 25 in Houston, Texas. Joe was an outstanding amateur and a graduate of New Dorp High School and the University of Notre Dame. After a career in the U.S. Army, he turned professional at River Oaks Country Club in Texas before moving on to Winged Foot Golf Club under Claude Harmon Sr. In 1961 Moresco settled in as head pro at Woodmere C.C. where he spent 41 years.

In addition to winning the 1953 Staten Island Amateur, he went on to be an outstanding member and officer of the Met Section of the PGA. He was inducted into the Met PGA Hall of Fame in 1988 before returning to Texas as director of golf instruction at The Clubs of Kingwood in Humble, Texas.

Joe Moresco sponsored Eddie Sorge in becoming a PGA member and now the retired Sorge will be inducted into the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame on April 29.

They Made The Local Scene Special

Before this wonderful opportunity came to write again about Staten Island sports, thanks to the management team of the NORTH SHORE LOCAL, I had the honor and privilege of covering the players and coaches who graced the Island's sports scene for 43 years.

The first 20 years (1968 to 1988) came as a sportswriter and columnist for the Staten Island Advance back when, I'm proud to say, the Advance may have had the finest local sports section in the country!

It was back when every high school and college basketball, football, baseball and softball game was covered by a reporter. Little League games and CYO basketball games got some ink. You could even read about dog show results!

From 1989 to 2012, I switched gears. Stopped writing and started talking as a color analyst for Time Warner Cable and once again I had the pleasure of covering the best of our best. A pitcher like Jason Marquis at Tottenville, a basketball marvel like Kyle McAlarney at Moore Catholic and a football phenom like Steven Gregory at Curtis became known to all as they appeared on television.

Sadly, the local sports coverage is greatly diminished and Time Warner Cable television went off the air in 2012 and has not been replaced by another cable company. And sadly, two of the coaches I came to know very well during my tenures as sportswriter and broadcaster are about to leave the scene.

This past week Susan Wagner football coach Al Paturzo announced he was retiring as the Susan Wagner HS football coach after 33 years, 223 wins and six PSAL city championships. And while Paturzo was stepping away from the football sideline, Tim Gannon, Port Richmond High School

principal and former basketball coach at Curtis High School, was calling it a career.

Of all the coaches I had to cover in my career, Paturzo might have been the most interesting. In fact, I can honestly say I had more disagreements with Al than any other coach. If he didn't like what I wrote, or said, he let me know in no uncertain terms. A few times the differences of opinion led to the raising of voices and periods of uneasiness between us.

But the arguments and hard feelings never lasted. Know why? I knew things about Paturzo. Like how he spent his "non-football" time coaching baseball. How he was a Grade A husband to his wife Kathy, and a terrific father to sons Phil and Brian. The family Paturzo was very much like the football family he cared so much about at Susan Wagner. Loyal to a fault, but always loyal.

Yes, he could be one pain in the behind, but the man loved the players, his friends and especially his family. And man, could this guy coach! The last 15 years or so, Paturzo didn't have the stud players and sheer numbers of the 80's and 90's, but nobody ever left a game against Wagner not knowing they were in a dogfight.

Gannon was, and is, a lot different, yet very much the same as Paturzo.

Calmer and often unassuming on the outside, inside raged an intense competitor.

Paturzo had his six city football titles, but Gannon won the Staten Island High School Basketball Tournament championship six times in the first eight years of the tourney.

Considering arch-rival St. Peter's stood in the Warriors way almost every year, that is a remarkable accomplishment.

In five of those championship seasons, Curtis was the No. 1 seed and favored to win.

But in 1998, Curtis was the No. 5 seed and won the crown. No other team seeded lower than No 3 has won the tournament in 25 years.

Gannon had to give up coaching when he became the principal at Port Richmond, but he quickly found a way to stay "in the game." He joined yours truly at Time Warner on the cable broadcasts. For the first time in my broadcast career, I was working a "threeman booth" with Tim and play-by-play guy Nick Legakis.

"The coach" was a natural. In a very short time, I found out why this man was so successful coaching at the high school level. He knew the game and he respected the game. That came across on the air and Tim made both me and Nick better broadcasters.

Very often, people will meet me and say, "I really miss the games on cable." I'm sure the same thing happens to Timmy Gannon. Now, he begins his retirement from his "real" job in June, and the students and parents of Port Richmond will be missing him far more than any basketball broadcast.

NUGENT'S NUGGETS: **Lots of drama at the Masters and good for Sergio. But one thing drove me crazy about CBS-TVs coverage. To my mind, Freddie Couples being in the mix at age 57 was a very big story line. So why did we go two hours without seeing him

ONCE on Sunday! In case you missed it, Couples finished one over and in the top 20. **Gary Sanchez going down is really going to hurt the Yankees. **New York Post columnist Phil Mushnick is a Staten Islander from the North Shore and I never miss reading his column. Let me say this.

Mushnick is spot on when he says Yoenis Cespedes is the laziest baserunner in baseball.

And Mushnick let us know who he replaced. Robinson (I'm too cool to run) Cano. **Got a chance to interview and know Bobby Hurley Sr. Somebody explain to me why the many multi-million dollar NBA players who played for Hurley at St. Anthony's of Jersey City can't give up it to keep the school open. **The Islanders fought to the bitter end and fell just short of making the playoffs.

Most years, 94 points is good enough. **Can't see how Ranger fans can be confident going into the playoffs. The team was pitiful the last month. **And since we are on the topic of hockey, the NHL's decision to abandon the 2018 Olympic Games is just plain stupid. This is going to lead player mutiny and probably a lockout in the very near future. **When all was said and done, the Sacramento Kings and the Minnesota Timberwolves were better than the Knicks! Sad.
