Trussville native joins OrthoAlabama Spine and Sports, offering excellence in sports medicine care

Trussville native, Dr. Zane Hyde, joined the staff this month offering the Birmingham practice specialties in ankle, hip, knee, and shoulder care from pediatric sports and fractures to musculoskeletal care for all ages. Dr. Hyde, 2007 graduate of Hewitt Trussville High School, completed his under-

grad at the University of Alabama, medical school and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and sports medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia.

“Orthopedic Sports Medicine is my subspecialty,” said Dr. Zane Hyde. “Sports Medicine kind of takes a lot of hats,” Hyde adds, “it is more like an arthroscopy fellowship meaning minimal invasive care for shoulder, knee, and hip. This is where I focus performing anything I can with an arthoscope as well as some joint replacement.”

Hyde shares his dedication in participating in his hometown community to offer care and treatment to his patients while returning them to the quality of life they deserve.

“I was born and raised in Trussville and grew up in the project area,” said Hyde. “I bought a project home nine (9) years ago when my wife and I got married. I live in the same floor plan of a house I grew up in.”

“I think OrthoAlabama is a good fit,” shares Hyde, “serving the community while being a part of the community.

Hyde shares his passion and desire to work with the OrthoAlabama Spine and Sports group because of not only the location, but also the colleagues.

“I’ve always wanted to be with this group,” said Hyde.

“Mostly because of the location and also the young men the practice has hired are good friends of mine from residency.”

pect of taking care of athletes, which got me interested in sports medicine. I worked in an outpatient center during the summers while in college and got to see first-hand what the field was like, which confirmed this was what I wanted to study and practice.”

Hyde shares that sports medicine is not just athletes, but includes a larger aspect of injuries from different types of individuals.

“I like discovering the problem, diagnosing the problem, and getting people back to their health while seeing them progress in a pretty relative short period of time,” adds Hyde. “And see them return to the things they want to do, which is obviously the rewarding part of it all and why I wanted to be a part of sports medicine.”

“The community aspect of Trussville is very important to me and serving the community,” said Hyde. “Being available to see people as quickly, providing a good experience, while getting them back to their health as fast as possible is my main goal. This starts with each individual patient and focusing on their needs.”

Oak Street Health in Center Point offering more than wellness care

6 healthy habits to improve your quality of life

CLAY – When it comes to getting your body going each day, you may often feel challenged and think, “What can I do to feel better on a daily basis?” Small neck, back and other body aches and pains can really impact your body and your daily life. Hug Chiropractic is working to improve that by offering six healthy habits.

With more people working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is important to stay healthy outside of the office. That has proven to be a challenge for many.

Dr. Rachel Gilmore, with Hug Chiropractic, has worked to identify the following to support a healthy and happy lifestyle while being homebound or while being home more frequently.

“It’s important to pay attention to your health while you’re working at home,” Gilmore explained. “You either have more time to pay attention to specific aspects of your health or you’ve got more stress. A lot of people feel like they’re off track, so it’s good to have a basic foundation of things in your mind to help yourself stay healthy and focused.”

The six aspects are stress reduction, movement and mobility, hydration, nutrition, sleep, and decreasing neck and back pain.

Let’s take a closer look at how each aspect impacts your overall health and what you can do to improve those things.

1. Stress reduction Studies have shown that breathing and stress on the body are directly related. A person needs proper movement on the rib cage and spine, along with proper activation of the diaphragm. There are specific ways to breathe right.

With people always on the go, stress is a mainstay in many lives. Stress causes the release of the cortisol hormone, which can impact performance and goals. Stress can weaken your immune system, impact fertility, libido, and digestive functions.

2. Movement and Mobility Movement is Medicine It is important to stay moving, even when you are working from your home office, couch or even your bed.

Dr. Gilmore said prolonged immobility is a leading cause of musculoskeletal pain.

“People need to stay mobile throughout the day,” said Gilmore. “A micro-break doesn’t have to be very long: it can be 5 to 10 seconds, or 1 to 5 minutes long. To break up the monotony in your day, get up, move around, or get a glass of water.”

Benefits of water intake include boosting your natural metabolism by increasing cellular activity, helping with

activity, you should increase your amount of water intake.

“Staying hydrated is essential for your body to function properly,” Gilmore said.

4. Nutrition “When it comes to nutrition, having a balanced approach is key to staying healthy while also enjoying life.” Gilmore recommends the 80/20 approach for most adults. (See Diagram B) “Focus on consuming mostly whole foods,” Gilmore said. “Keeping protein in each meal will help you feel full longer, especially for women. It can also help you maintain lean body mass.”

Getting appropriate servings of fruit and vegetables, fiber and complex carbs over simple sugars are also important.

Gilmore recommends consulting with your medical provider or a registered dietitian to find the best-balanced diet for you.

Limiting alcohol consumption can also help your body function properly. Gilmore explained, “Moderation is key and remembering to hydrate before and while drinking can improve your experience.”

“More alcohol consumption over time has been shown to cause fat gain and impact your mood” Gilmore said.

“Some have seen more depression among individuals who regularly intake alcohol. However, occasional consumption of red wine may have benefits including the increase of antioxidants said to lower the risk of heart disease.”

5. Sleep While catching enough ZZZ’s, it’s important to think about things such as your sleep position. Getting seven to nine hours of rest a night is recommended, but no matter how much sleep you get, you should always try and stay on a regular bedtime schedule, and in certain positions.

“We recommend sleeping on your side or on your back to decrease the stress on your body,” Gilmore said. “Sleeping on your stomach places your spine into extension and compresses the posterior aspects of joints and muscles which can lead to more tightness when you wake up.

Placing a pillow between your knees, while on your side, or behind your knees, while on your back, can also help with your sleep posture and reduce overall tension.

“Sleep is vital for daily functions, “Gilmore added.

“It can help cognitive tasks at work, school, or home and is one of the most important aspects for recovery of both injuries, minor wear-and-tear and normal day-to-day functions.”

According to Gilmore, sleep also supports the immune system for better healing and helps to regulate hormones and mood.

6. Decreasing Neck and Back Pain Hug Chiropractic has seen more incidents among patients with neck and back pain in the past year. In fact, research from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) supports this observation.

“It’s no surprise with a lot of people working from home that this is showing up,” said Gilmore.

With changes due to COVID-19, comes elevated stress and improper ergonomics for many throughout the workday. Many feel these changes have impacted their sleep, mobility, and nutrition, among other areas.

Staying consistent on habits and lifestyle can help mitigate these changes and additional stress.

“Because we saw an increase in these complaints in our office, we suggest our patients move more, take micro-breaks, and do all of these other things to decrease neck and back pain,” said Gilmore.

“We know that chiropractic work is a non-invasive, safe and effective approach to address common complaints of neck and back pain.”

Carroll Pharmacy extends its vision by introducing PharmD Wellness

TRUSSVILLE — The need to go beyond the dispensing aspect of pharmacy and turn to more one-on-one interactions between pharmacists and patients is precisely what Carroll Pharmacy is implementing with PharmD Wellness in their stores in Trussville and Clay.

The initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was an eye-opening experience for independent pharmacy.

“We recognized there was a need in the community for additional services that we knew we could provide to our patients, and over the last year-and-a-half, we have been incorporating expanded clinical services into our traditional pharmacy,” said owner Greg Carroll. Carroll also added, “PharmD Wellness has always had that goal in mind, and during the quarantine, we

were able to implement those ideas.”

PharmD Wellness is Carroll Pharmacy’s clinical division that expands on their mission to provide healthy solutions while caring to love and loving to care. Since its beginning, PharmD Wellness has given thousands of COVID-19 vaccines as well as many other vaccines such as Shingrix, TDaP, Influenza and B-12. They also provide clinical testing which includes Covid-19 antigen and antibody, strep, and flu testing.

They are also able to perform Annual Wellness Screenings for patients with select insurance plans. Compounding is another specialty service that caters to the needs of individual patients, including but not limited to bioidentical hormone replacement, specialized pediatric dosing and products not available from a manufacturer.

“Over the last year-and-a-

half, we have been incorporating expanded clinical services into our traditional pharmacy,” said owner Greg Carroll. “With the addition of the Rapid Pak medication management system, our patients are more compliant with their medication therapy, therefore, helping to keep them out of the hospital and improving quality of life.”

Carroll mentioned once the shock of the pandemic wore off, he was able to look to the future, even when it was difficult to see past the pandemic. The world was evolving, which meant Carroll Pharmacy needed to evolve, too. PharmD Wellness meant there was a solution, and with the staff’s clinical knowledge, they could help the physicians and patients.

“Our combined staff has over 85 years of clinical pharmacist experience. We are using that clinical knowledge for better outcomes for our

patients by collaborating with physicians, other members of the healthcare team, and the patient.”

Maegan Reynolds, PharmD Clinical Co-Coordinator, expressed how the pandemic has increased the need for patients to be seen in a clinical setting.

This revealed the increasing need for the pharmacy’s clinical services to be available to the community. This is why they created PharmD Wellness.

Reynolds says that pharmacists are, for a lot of people, the most accessible part of the healthcare team.

“The goal of the clinical team at Carroll Pharmacy is to provide individualized comprehensive pharmacy care that combines our traditional pharmacy services with our expanded clinical services,” Reynolds added.

“We saw an opportunity to use our clinical knowledge and skill set to really serve the community through expand-

ing our clinical services,” said Raegan Fain, Pharm D Clinical Co-Coordinator, who graduated from McWhorter School of Pharmacy in April and began working full-time at Carroll Pharmacy. Fain is a crucial part of PharmD Wellness, expanding clinical services to the community.

Named for its location at 4600 N. Magnolia Ave., the new clinic is small with just one lead veterinarian and two technicians working out of the space. But the small clinic is by design, veterinarian Dr. Vaishali Joshi said.

Joshi said she wanted to open a clinic focused on personalized care and continuity.

At Wagnolia, pets won’t see multiple doctors like at other vet clinics. Instead, they will always see Joshi and her team.

Joshi said she was really excited about the location because Uptown’s vibe fits her practice.

“I love Wilson Avenue,” she said. “There is a lot going on here and it’s such a cool and inclusive community.”

Joshi said opening a clinic in Uptown has helped the area, too, as it is a bit of a “vet desert.”

“I wanted to be in an area

where I felt comfortable with the vibe and the community but to also make sure I was filling a need,” she said.

Many of her newest patients live right around the corner but haven’t had access to veterinary care nearby.

“Most of my new cats and dogs are senior pets who haven’t seen a vet in a long time,” she said. “Now they have a place to go that is easily accessible to their owners.”

Although she mostly sees dogs and cats, Joshi is not opposed to helping more exotic pets. She has a small partnership with Chicago Bird Collision Monitors — a volunteer group that helps injured wild birds.

Central to her practice is providing a “stress-free environment” for pets and their owners. Each new patient gets a full hour with Joshi so that they can feel comfortable in a new environment.

“We really want to avoid the domino effect, where a pet has a bad experience at the vet and every time after it gets worse,” she said.

Joshi encouraged pets and their owners to “stop by anytime,” even without an appointment. The office has a scale in the lobby where dog owners can pop in to get their pet weighed. And of course, there are plenty of treats for especially good pets.

As an introductory rate, Joshi is offering new clients $1 dollar visits. She said the deal will continue through the end of March.
