The class of 2020 is truly a class like no other

By Erica Thomas, managing editor Along with an unprecedented way of life, the coronavirus pandemic brought about many changes for communities and schools across the state, the nation and the world. These sudden changes created unique challenges for students, teachers and parents.

Graduating seniors were able to take on those challenges and succeed despite unimaginable circumstances. The class of 2020 is truly a class like no other.

In years past, high school seniors have been able to walk the hallways of schools with their heads held high and have been able to exude an air of confidence that helped

catapult them into their first year of adulthood.

They have often been inspired to set an example for underclassmen who watch their every move.

For the class of 2020, hallways suddenly vanished months before graduation. Kitchen tables became desks, nightstands became lockers, and computers became complete classrooms. Seniors were unable to enjoy the typical Friday night out on the town, even being forced out of prom night.

The upperclassmen were only able to offer inspiration to their younger peers through a virtual world.

With strength and hope, the class of 2020 was able to overcome these difficult times. As Holocaust survivor and

Nobel laureate said, “Just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings.”

The class of 2020 will be an inspiration for future generations. The example set by this extraordinary group of students, will be infused in the lives of others for years to come.

From the beginning, TCS Superintendent Dr. Pattie Neill said it would take leadership to help students weather the storm. Dr. Neill, the Board of Education, school administration and the incredible educators and staff at all Trussville City Schools should be proud of what they accomplished. Each and every person involved in the school system showed

exemplary leadership in response to the deadly pandemic.

Trussville City Schools has scheduled an end-ofschool parade/caravan to celebrate Trussville students and to wish them well as they step into the freedom of summer. The parade will consist of six routes throughout Trussville between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2020.

Below are plans for all school graduation ceremonies.

CENTER POINT HIGH SCHOOL will begin commencement at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the football stadium.

CLAY-CHALKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL graduation will be held from Tuesday, May 26, at Cou-

gar Stadium. There will be two separate ceremonies and two entrances to the stadium, in order for students and families to practice social distancing.

One ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and the other will begin at 1 p.m.

MOODY HIGH SCHOOL will hold graduation during the week of May 18. Each graduate will be given a time slot. Students may only have six guests for their individual graduation ceremony. Principals are contacting students to schedule.

PINSON VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL will host a graduation processional beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, on the field at the school. The ceremony will be limited to four

guests per graduate.

SPRINGVILLE HIGH SCHOOL will hold graduation during the week of May 18. Each graduate will be given a time slot. Students may only have six guests for their individual graduation ceremony. Principals are contacting students to schedule.

H E W I T T- T R U S S VILLE HIGH SCHOOL will hold a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 16, at HT Football Stadium. The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. and families will be allowed four tickets each.

From Mayor Buddy Choat As Mayor of Trussville it gives me great pleasure to congratulate each of you on your high school graduation. I know that there are many in this outstanding class of graduates that have been successful and recognized for your accomplishments. To you I say, “Well done”. Remember the hard work that you have had to put in to get to this point in your educational paths.

Now, as you leave high school and pursue other opportunities, I hope you will reflect back to when you began school and where you are today. Many challenges are ahead of you but take this time to reflect on the memories, friendships, teachers, and friends that have helped you along your way. Congratulations & Best Wishes Class of 2020 From Dr. Pattie Neill, Superintendent Everyone who has graduated from high school has a collection of memories from that wonderful 4- year period stored in their minds and hearts. So, let’s have some fun! Imagine your senior memories like a “time capsule” that includes trendy clothes, unique hairstyles, music, your first car, boyfriends, girlfriends, ballgames, technology, tweets, apps, tattoos, teachers, classes, Husky Hour, field trips, clubs, extra-curricular activities, awards, projects, and accomplishments. Ask an older friend or family member about their high school memories and you will find that you have similar memories in common with previous graduating classes, plus one more thing: Your senior class experienced a COVID-19 global pandemic that will forevermore be a defining event for the class of 2020. At every class reunion in the future, you will remember the unprecedented impact and timing of the coronavirus as an interruption to the end of your senior year. In spite of this disruption, I hope you will hold close many fond memories that represent learning, fun, laughter and friendship from the months before school closed. You overcame the crisis, and you made it! My greatest joy every year is to see the senior class receive their diplomas, hear the family members cheer, watch you move your tassel to the left, and throw your cap into the air! It is your rite of passage as you commence into adulthood. That never gets old to me and I’ve seen it dozens of times.

Each graduation is special because it represents years of hard work, perseverance and the awakening of your own personal dreams, aspirations, and character. We will make this graduation special for you, too. I know your HTHS diploma will serve you well as you go to college, into the workforce, or to the military. Wherever you go, always remember the good times from high school along with the healing power of love and friendship. As your lives change, you will always have HTHS friends forever, along with support from those who loved you and helped you during your high school years. My wish for you is a bright future, and I am confident that you are ready. I hope all of your experiences in TCS made you stronger and more prepared to move ahead in extraordinary ways and make your dreams come true. The Senior Class of 2020 is successful because of your perseverance, determination, and hard work in difficult circumstances. Please remember the encouragement, support and love of your family, your teachers, and your school leaders. From HTHS Principal, Tim Salem I am thankful we had time with you from August 14 until March 13 in the classrooms and hallways of HTHS. There were lots of school programs, sports events, and fine arts performances that we enjoyed this year, but there were many that we didn’t get to see. It seems like it was constantly raining when I last saw everyone trudging in to start the school days, holding the bells for weather/road conditions and keeping the “wet floor” signs in view. That seems a long time ago, but I do hope to make more HTHS memories with you before colleges and careers begin. This is all new for us, and we will learn from these challenging times. Your K-12 education is about to finish, and I know your family is proud of you. Congratulations for all you have accomplished. It was a fast four years of high school, and as you get older it only goes faster. See you soon!

From HTHS Senior Counselor, Leta McGehee It has been such a joy and pleasure to serve as your counselor through your high school years. As you take a minute to think about your years at Hewitt-Trussville High School, I hope you will remember more than the senior events we did not have the opportunity to experience together. Sadly, we were not able to have Prom, spring sports, and the event list could go on.

We were not able to enjoy our last few months together (even though you had “senioritus” at the beginning in August), but guys, let’s look at what the Class of 2020 DID have! We have had each other! We have had many cherished events and made wonderful memories. We will be remembered as THE most famous senior class. We have a deeper understanding of sacrifice, family time, solitude, and have experienced life as we have never known. AND you got all that extra sleep you wanted. I do not have the adequate words to describe how amazing your class has been. Class of 2020 will leave an extraordinary legacy to the underclassmen, the TCS District, and especially to me! You are an exceptional class of diverse talents and gifts, academic achievements, hilarious and loving personalities, persuasive reasoning, outstanding leadership skills, and character. You have earned the love and respect from teachers, administrators, staff and we celebrate your accomplishments. As you begin to write your next chapter of life, I hope you know how blessed I am to have been a tiny part of your high school experience.

Each one of you will always be so special to me. I am excited about your future. I know you will treasure each year you have been a student in Trussville City Schools. I hope you will reflect on each adult that invested time to help you become the young man and woman you are today. You have received love and guidance from all of us that are excited about your future success.

Lockett Twins Going Out With A Bang Having twins is challenging and they can be a handful, especially when they are your first born children. We made it by the grace of God and have never had a dull moment!

Starting with baby A: Trenady. She was a feisty little mama from the start. Shoving and pushing her brother, Treagan, out of the way which led me having to have emergency surgery. She is by far the dominant twin and it shows in every aspect of her life. Particularly when she’s playing her favorite sport, volleyball. She lead her team in hits/kills this past season and is an all around player, but her main position is outside hitter.

Now onto her brother Treagan, baby B. He has a unique story. When they started out in the 8th grade they were the same height 5’9 ish.

In a three year span he had a massive growth spurt and now stands at 6’9, with 7.5ft wingspan. His basketball journey was rocky at first, not making the team until his junior year. In his final year playing this past season, he had a dunk at the end of the game in the last 10 seconds that brought the entire house down! Never in basketball has there been a time when the dog pound rushed the basketball court, we usually only see that at football games. That moment was the highlight of his day and it also happened to be on their birthday.

What an awesome ending!

Fast forward, we have seniors graduating and starting new chapters in their lives. Both of them have gotten scholarships to play the sport that they both love. We are so proud of the man and woman they have become.

We are truly blessed to be their parents and thank God that He gave us this wonderful package deal.

In January of 2020, artist Billie Eilish and her green hair shook things up at the Grammys when she brought home 5 awards, including best new artist and song of the year. Not to mention she replaced Taylor Swift as the youngest person ever to win a Grammy.

The world lost a legend NBA Champion Kobe Bryant was killed on Jan. 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash. He was 41. His daughter Gianna and seven others were also killed.

Bryant will be remembered for his 20-season professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He holds the record for the most All-Star MVP Awards, after winning four.

10 Tips for Graduating High School Seniors

By: Maggie Wiley, Intern, America's Promise Alliance As students across the country have graduated from high school, we know that the transition into the “real world” can be a challenge.

Here are 10 tips that will help make the transition a little easier.

1. Go on a road trip with friends before college. It may seem cliché, but a day trip with your besties can be the best final goodbye. A road trip gives you a new feeling of independence, and it doesn’t have to be very far! It could be downtown, or the next state over. Just sit back, relax, and cruise.

2.

Celebrate your accomplishments. Let’s face it, graduating high school is a big deal! Don’t forget to give yourself the credit you deserve.

3. Enjoy your time at home and spend time with your family because you will definitely miss them while you’re away. Your parents may have been quirky around your friends, and sometimes even annoying, but they’ve put a lot of work into supporting you throughout your entire academic career (and your normal life too!) Make sure that you take the time to thank them and spend time with them. And when you’re with them, make sure you give them your undivided attention.

4. Find something you’re passionate about and invest some time into it. It could be something you loved to do in high school or a new-found interest. Passions can keep you from being bored in the

summer and keep your brain and body active while waiting for the fall semester to come around.

5. Relax, you don’t need your whole life planned out now. A lot of new grads feel like they have to know and plan out the next four years of their life and on. You’re young, be flexible, be present, and enjoy. Think about it this way, you’ll never be surrounded by this many people your age again, so YOLO. 6. Start saving money as soon as you can. Investing now can have a lot of pay off at the end of your college career! If you don’t already have one, open up a savings account and put in $20 every payday. You’ll thank yourself on a rainy day.

7. Hold no regrets. Living with regrets can taint your view of the future, keep you from growing, and hurt you in the end. Try not to hold too many regrets from high school and going forward in life. You’re human – you make mistakes. Learn to for-

give yourself and think of it as a learning experience.

8. Be open to new experiences. Chances are, you’ve spent the last four years with the same group of friends, doing the same after school activities, and taking the same classes. Don’t be afraid to open your doors to new people and opportunities! College and the outside world has so much more to offer than what you were exposed to within those four walls of high school.

9. This is an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Don’t take anything from anyone.

The you from high school is long gone! Take graduation as a chance for a fresh start. Find ways to make yourself more confident. Try a new fashion trend, style your hair in a way you wouldn’t have dreamed of before, start listening to different music - become the person you that you’ve always wanted to be. Don’t let anyone stop you!

If you approach life with a half-hearted effort, then you’ll achieve mediocre results.

No one ever achieved 100% of their goals with a 75% commitment and half-hearted effort. Give everything 100% of your best effort. If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth nothing less. All or nothing.

If It Is To Be It Is Up To Me

When you turn on the television and hear about how the world is falling apart, and there’s nothing to do today but panic – it is up to you – to rise above that noise and stay focused on your goals. Remember, character is found in the response, not in the moment.

Mattie Lyster, a senior at Springville High School, played softball at Hewitt for 3 years before moving to Springville to finish out her high school years. She will be attending Mississippi State in the fall on an Academic Scholarship.

Damione Ward, a senior at Clay Chalkville High School, is a student athlete with a passion for football. He’s an active member of FBLA and has been a member of the National Honor Society for 4 years. He maintained a 3.7 GPA and has been an honor student throughout his four years of high school. Not only does Damione have a passion for football but he also has a passion for helping others.

DeNorris Mincey, a senior at Center Point High played football, basketball and track at a 400 and 800. He’s also a member of Gumbo, helping and working with others is what he enjoys doing. He maintained a GPA of 2.7 and is wanting to attended JSU.

Walker Van Horn is a senior at HTHS. He has played football at Hewitt since he was in the 6th grade, has served on the Leadership Team of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was chosen to attend the Leadership Retreat this year. He plans to attend Highlands College to pursue student ministry.

Kameron Bass is a 2020 graduate of Shades Valley High School. He is finishing out his senior year with a 3.3 GPA. He was a member of the football team all 4 years. He received several awards due to his leadership, academics, and character. He was this years recipient of the SV Coaches Award and the Burlsworth Character award which are awarded to only one player and are considered the highest awards from the football program. He plans to play football his sophomore year of college and wishes to become a head football defensive coordinator as well as a sports agent. He’s very active in his church young adult ministry as well as the community. He will continue to be resilient and stand bold on the goals set before him

Brandon Isbell is a senior graduating from Clay Chalkville High School. He was so looking forward to walking across that stage.

Jackson Tidmore, a senior at West End High School, played football and baseball. He will be attending Gadsden State in the fall.

Alyssa Monae Miller is our miracle baby. Doctors said if she made it past one year old, she would not walk or talk. She has beat the odds. Not only did she live past the age of one, she is walking, talking, running and dancing. She is a people person and loves to help. She also loves church, particularly praise and worship. For her 16th birthday, people sent her cards and packages from all over the world and the local news came out and filmed her party. She has developed into a bright young lady and will go far in life!
