Dewey Corder, 80, died Dec. 25 from COVID pneumonia and heart failure, according to The Alabama Baptist.

‘COVID is Real!’ Daughter of St. Clair County woman who died of virus urges precautions

PELL CITY — After the death of her 72-year-old mother from COVID-19, one woman is speaking out about her horrific experience, in hopes that people will take the virus seriously.

Tara Buchanan lost her mother, Pamela Daniel, to the illness on Dec. 16, 2020.

While many people were out last-minute Christmas shopping or tying up loose ends before the holidays, Buchanan was inside a hospital watching her mother struggle for each breath.

“I was, fortunately, able to be at the hospital with her so I had a different view,” said Buchanan.

With every breath, the sound of a ventilator could be heard through the hallways of the hospital. The intensive care unit where Daniel had been for two weeks was a somber reminder of the severity of coronavirus.

Daniel, who lived in

Trussville for 20 years before moving to Pell City four years ago, was in the high-risk category because of her age. But she was active and healthy.

She walked three miles a day and Buchanan said even her doctors predicted she would make it.

“The doctors all thought she would get better,” Buchanan said. “It’s just been heart-wrenching.”

And on day 10 of her hospital stay, some uplifting news came. Daniel’s doctor saw her on the morning of Dec. 3. He predicted she would be released from the hospital and would be home by that afternoon. But that didn’t happen.

Within hours, Daniel was placed into the ICU. The only positive news about the ICU stay was that it meant Daniel would have more nurses and more medical attention. There was hope that she would be healed and would get to return home to her husband of nearly 50 years.

days in the hospital, 14 of those in ICU, Daniel passed away. As Buchanan continually updated friends and family through a Facebook page from the hospital, those days of watching the suffering did something to her. She knew she had to get the message out: COVID is real!

“As I walked through the hospital hallways every day,

I saw so much suffering and people were alone,” Buchanan recalled. “This is such a horrible illness. You’re struggling to breathe, scared, and you can’t even have your loved ones there with you to comfort you. It’s just horrible.”

Buchanan said she knows many people are suffering this year. She wants to do her part to stop the suffering.

“I sat in the hospital for three weeks watching doctors and nurses cry in frustration because this shouldn’t have been happening to my mom,” said Buchanan…”It’s not their fault. They did all they could. Their love, care, and effort were second to none but it just wasn’t enough because there is no cure for COVID.” Buchanan urges people to social distance, wear masks and follow recommendations from health experts. No matter how healthy you are, Buchanan said her mom is an example of what can happen if everyone doesn’t do what they can to protect others.

“She cried and wanted to get better,” said Buchanan. “She told the doctors she didn’t want to die. She wanted to be here longer. But despite all the efforts she took to stay COVID-free, the exercises she did to stay healthy, the many medications and treatments she took to be healed, her time on earth is done and she is now in Heaven. Covid is REAL!”

Alabama ending in-person unemployment help

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — In-person help for Alabama residents needing assistance with unemployment claims is coming to an end as a new phone appointment system will be established for the new year.

The Alabama Department of Labor, in a news release, said it is ending in-person service at the Crump Senior Center due to health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus. The last dates for such service will be Dec. 28 and Dec. 29. Appointments for those days will be available on the ADOL website, www.labor.alabama.gov, beginning Christmas Day. Claimants can call 1-800361-4524 beginning Jan. 3 after 5 p.m. until midnight on Sundays through Thursday to schedule a call back for

the next day to set up an appointment. Claimants are encouraged to keep their phones near them for their scheduled callback, the department said.

The calls will come from a Montgomery, Alabama number.

Coronavirus pandemic impacts lives, changes way of living for many ATLANTA — The coronavirus pandemic was responsible for nearly 80 million reported illnesses worldwide in December 2020. But, the illness, named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), actually began in 2019. Health experts first identified the virus in Wuhan, China.

Although many people reported little to no symptoms, some have reported severe illness. Around 1.72 deaths

have been attributed to coronavirus. A person can remain infectious for up to two weeks after catching COVID-19.

Symptoms include loss of smell and taste, fever, cough, fatigue, and respiratory issues.

In the United States and in many other countries, mask orders required people to wear masks in public places and strongly urged social distancing, because the virus spreads through the air and

from contaminated areas.

Most people who contract the disease and have symptoms, begin experiencing those symptoms within two to seven days after exposure.

Although a vaccine was made available in December 2020, health experts urge people to continue using caution by taking preventative measures.

The pandemic also impacted the economy, jobs and education worldwide.

City of Trussville celebrates opening of Entertainment District TRUSSVILLE — After years of planning and construction, the city of Trussville dedicated the Trussville Entertainment District (TED) on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020.

The official celebration of the newly renovated area was attended by city and state leaders including Mayor Buddy Choat, council members, Rep. Danny Garrett, Sen. Shay Shelnutt, Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight and Trussville City Schools Superintendent

Dr. Pattie Neill.

Choat said the celebration was a way for the city to show appreciation to everyone who has been involved in the development of the downtown area.

“It’s very gratifying to look back and see how far we have come,” Choat said.

“But it’s not for me, it’s for the city and the citizens of Trussville and the families.”

Choat said he hopes the TED continues to grow and bring people to the city of Trussville.

“I just see it becoming better and better,” Choat added. “As you look around, you can see it has the potential to grow with new businesses.”

The area includes a pavilion and a stage, Ferus Artisan Ales and Cookie Dough Magic. Development around the Entertainment District is expected to continue into 2021 and the city plans to complete the next phase of downtown redevelopment, with the new plaza at North Chalkville Road and Main Street.

The new business is undergoing renovations and is expected to be opened in February 2021.

The owner, Tara Buchanan, said the first crime that happened was the theft of a subcontractor’s trailer and tools. Thankfully, Buchanan said the trailer was recovered.

But on Dec. 23, another incident happened at the location. Surveillance cameras captured a man at 4 a.m. taking more items from behind the building. The vehicle the

person was in was described as a silver or light gray Ford F-150 regular cab truck. In the bed of the truck, were large black bags and a large aluminum barrel that was taken from the business.

The video shows the

person came from the Old Springville Road area.

The owners say they want the person responsible brought to justice. If you recognize the person in the surveillance images, call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Body of Paighton Houston found in shallow grave behind home in Hueytown HUEYTOWN — The Trussville Police Department confirmed a body found on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, in Hueytown, was that of missing Trussville woman Paighton Houston.

On Thursday evening, authorities from the Trussville Police Department, the Birmingham Police Department, the Hueytown Police Department, Jefferson County Deputies and units with the Metro Area Crime Center cordoned off a residential area on Chapel Drive near Love Street in Hueytown, after receiving information in the search for Houston.

At the scene, officers searched backyards with flashlights along Chapel Drive. Dozens of unmarked and marked cars along with K9 units were at the scene.

The scene was secured around 9:30 p.m. while investigators awaited daylight.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office arrived on

the scene around 11:30 a.m. on Friday. A white van pulled behind the house and left the scene at 12:50 p.m. At approximately 12:57 p.m., Bessemer Cutoff District District Attorney Lynneice Washington confirmed that a body was discovered in a shallow grave. Washington said the body was covered with a sheet before being buried.

Houston was reported missing after leaving Tin Roof in Birmingham, late on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019. She was seen leaving with two men, according to Birming-

ham Police, who are investigating the case.

Police said after leaving the bar, she texted a friend saying that she did not know who she was with and that she might be in trouble.

Toxicology tests revealed that Houston died of an accidental drug overdose, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Fredrick Hampton, 50, of Brighton, is facing a charge of abuse of a corpse, a Class C felony, in connection to the disposal of Houston’s body.

He is awaiting trial.

Hewitt-Trussville High named National Blue Ribbon School TRUSSVILLE — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized five Alabama schools, including Hewitt-Trussville High School, as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020.

The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“Congratulations to this

year’s National Blue Ribbon School awardees,” said Secretary DeVos. “It’s a privilege to recognize the extraordinary work you do to meet students’ needs and prepare them for successful careers and meaningful lives.”

HTHS Principal Tim Salem was pleased to hear the good news.

“The HTHS staff, students, and parents have met

the high standards of the National Blue Ribbon Schools, and I am excited to discover all of our high school’s continued successes,” Salem said.

According to a Thursday announcement from the U.S. Department of Education, 317 public and 50 non-public schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools this year, including five from Alabama.

Moody police officer dies following shooting at Super 8 motel

MOODY — A Moody police officer was killed in a shooting late on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at the Super 8 on U.S. 411 in Moody.

Moody Police Chief Thomas Hunt identified the deceased officer as Sgt. Stephen Williams.

The ordeal began around 9:30 p.m. when officers from the Moody Police Department arrived at the motel following a call for a disturbance at the hotel. Williams was shot upon arrival.

Williams was transported to UAB Hospital by ambulance where he was pro-

nounced dead. A medical helicopter had arrived to the scene, but was not used.

Police surrounded the hotel for hours following Williams’ shooting. After a tense standoff, authorities apprehended Tapero Corlene Johnson, 27, of Birmingham and Marquisha Anissa Tyson,

28, of Birmingham. Both suspects are charged with capital murder in the slaying of Williams.

Williams was a 23-year veteran and had been with the Moody Police Department for three years. He was the night-shift sergeant. He had been promoted to sergeant in the past year and was posthumously promoted to lieutenant.

The department began raising money for a fallen officer memorial honoring Williams and Officer Keith Turner. Turner was killed in the line of duty in 1998.

Pinson elects new mayor for first time in history PINSON – The Pinson City Council swore in a new mayor for the first time since the city’s 2004 incorporation Monday night, Nov. 2, 2020.

Mayor Joe Cochran has lived in the city of Pinson for nearly 30 years and served on the city council in Place 2 from 2004 to 2016. In 2016, Cochran ran for the position of mayor and lost, but this year, he ran again and succeeded, unseating Pinson’s inaugural mayor Hoyt Sanders.

“I think it’s probably the second or third greatest opportunity I’ve ever had in my life,” Cochran said. “Moving forward, I look very forward to working with this council and with this community to try to create progress here.”

Glenda Kirkland, who was sworn in to Place 5. Kirkland, who has long-term roots in the city of Clay, has also served as mayor of the small town of Inglis, Florida.

“I’m excited about being on the council,” Kirkland said. “I’m looking forward to doing some good things here in Pinson and helping it grow. It’s exciting. I want to see Pinson move up more and do a lot more things for our schools and for the kids.”

“Judge Bolin … has actually sworn every city council since the very first one,” Cochran said. “He is a supreme court justice, so we are honored to have someone at his level come to our small

Trussville teen shot and Clay-Chalkville grad, 20, killed, another teen charged shot and killed outside UAB with murder student center TRUSSVILLE — A Trussville teenager was shot and killed in the early morning hours of April 1, 2020.

The victim was identified as 18-year-old Trent Parkerson.

The Trussville Police Department was called to the scene around 3:30 a.m. The incident occurred outside of a home in the 7600 block of Happy Hollow Road, which is north of Deerfoot Parkway.

Parkerson was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates.

Steven Chase Lafoy, 18, was arrested and charged with capital murder in the death of Parkerson. Lafoy was 17 at the time of the shooting. Lafoy was able to post a property bond but was arrested again in November on a drug charge and his bond was revoked.

Both teens were students at Hewitt-Trussville High School.

Parkerson was a senior defensive end for the Hewitt-Trussville football team this past season. He played in eight games and recorded eight total tackles. He was also a member of the varsity wrestling team.

“We are devastated and

deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Trent Parkerson, a member of our Husky football family,” Hewitt-Trussville football head coach Josh Floyd said in a statement. “We are praying for the families impacted by this tragedy. Our coaches have reached out to the other members of our team and are committed to working with them through the grieving process. We encourage the entire Trussville community to

look for our ways to support the Parkerson family in any way possible.”

Trussville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Pattie Neill responded to the death with a statement.

“It is sad to hear of any loss of life, and our sadness deepens when students are involved,” Neill said. “Our hearts go out to the families of both of these students and to all of their classmates during this time.”

Pinson Valley captures 3rd state championship in 4 years TUSCALOOSA — It was a come-from-behind effort in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, as the third-ranked Pinson Valley Indians knocked off the seventh-ranked Spanish Fort Toros 23-13 in the Class 6A state championship game.

Facing a 13-10 fourth-quarter deficit, the Tribe rallied for two late touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown strike from junior quarterback Zack Pyron to senior receiver Ga’Quincy McKinstry. The decisive strike came at a big moment and ended a stretch of six straight empty possessions.

The senior climbed the ladder, pulled down a high delivery and spun away from defenders for the 52-yard score that gave his team a 1713 advantage with 9:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After another defensive stop, Pyron responded with the knockout punch — an 11yard scoring strike to Jaquel Fells Jr. off play-action, setting the final count at 23-13.

Pyron completed 13 of his

21 passes for 166 yards and two scores to go with another 74 yards rushing. McKinstry grabbed five receptions for 89 yards, 52 of which came on the go-ahead touchdown reception. Fells added four receptions for 52 yards and the score.

It was, however, a game of runs.

The Region 6 champions started strong, jumping out to a 10-0 advantage with consecutive scores on their first two possessions. Junior running back Michael Sharpe Jr. started things with a 26-yard touchdown run with 9:04 remaining in the first, and junior kicker Zaylen McCray capped off Pinson Valley’s second drive with a 26-yard field goal.

Sharpe ran for 60 yards and a score on 13 calls.

Sophomore quarterback Brendon Byrd punched in a pair of goal line touchdowns to give Spanish Fort its first lead with 3:49 remaining in the first half. The second of the pair was made possible by a botched Pinson Valley punt (McCray received the long snap with his knee on the Bryant-Denny turf) that set Byrd up with a first-and-goal from the Tribe’s 8-yard line.

He hammered it home three plays later on a QB sneak.

The Pinson Valley defense would have all the answers throughout the final two frames, securing a second-half shutout. In six second-half possessions, Spanish Fort was forced into four punts, including three threeand-outs. Defensive lineman James Perkins led the way with two quarterback sacks and seven tackles in the win. As a unit, the Indians finished with three sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

BIRMINGHAM — A woman shot and killed outside of the Hill Student Center at UAB on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020, was Destiny Danielle Washington.

Washington, 20, of Trussville, was a 2018 graduate of Clay-Chalkville High School.

She was completing classes at Lawson State through UAB’s Joint Admission Program with dreams of becoming a nurse to help others.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to Children’s Hospital at 1601 5th Avenue South on a report of an adult gunshot victim who arrived by way of private vehicle.

Children’s Hospital staff pronounced Washington deceased, according to Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim

was shot inside of a vehicle while in the parking lot of the Hill University Center at 1400 University Boulevard,” Fitzgerald said. “The victim was then driven to Children’s Hospital by way of a private vehicle for emergency medical care.”

In a statement, UAB said the shooting is believed to have occurred during an arranged meeting to sell headphones.

“We are devastated that tragedy hit the UAB family overnight when a student lost her life after being shot in the parking lot outside the Hill Student Center,” UAB said in a statement. “Police believe this occurred during a meeting arranged to sell headphones.

Because this is an ongoing investigation, and out of respect for the victim and her family, we are not sharing addition-

al information at this time.

However, we will when it is appropriate. In the meantime, please keep the victim and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Carlos Londarrius Stephens, of Alabaster, Alabama. Stephens was taken into custody after turning himself in on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, police said.

Detectives presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and obtained a capital murder warrant for the death of Washington.

Stephens was booked into the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.

The death was the 118th homicide in Birmingham of 2020. Of those homicides, 15 have been ruled justifiable and one has been ruled accidental.

Center Point elects new mayor, council CENTER POINT — The city of Center Point came under completely new leadership after the 2020 Municipal Elections.

After nearly 18 years of service, former Center Point Mayor Tom Henderson was replaced by former Councilor Bobby Scott, who took part in a swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Nov. 2, at Hilldale Baptist Church. Henderson had been the city’s only mayor since its inception in 2002.

Henderson’s replacement, Scott, joined five new councilmembers at the ceremony.

Those members include D.M. Collins (Place 1), Glenn Williams (Place 2), Tiffany Collins Moore (Place 3), Sharon Jones (Place 4) and Ebonee Hammonds (Place 5).

“We have five new councilmembers: four ladies, one

man,” said Scott. “They have a lot of learning to do. I know my first year on the council there was a lot to pick up and then have to turn around and put back out there, so I think they are going to do great.

They are very motivated, so hopefully progress will start soon.”

When asked about his platform as mayor, Scott pointed to economic development and safety.

“Economic development; definitely bringing in new businesses,” said Scott.

“Safety is a huge concern for residents in the city, so we want to make sure whatever we can do to help improve the quality of life in Center Point, that’s what we’re going to do.”

The newly-elected mayor also encourages more com-

munity involvement throughout the city moving forward.

“The mayor definitely leads the city, but it takes every resident to help improve the city, so become involved: come to council meetings, come to city events, visit your schools, sign up for PTA,” said Scott. “I definitely ask the residents to do everything you can as far as helping Center Point progress.”

Chair assignments were also announced on Monday night, and go as follows: Collins (economic development), Moore (public safety), Hammonds (finance), Jones (education/library), Williams (parks and recreation).

Collins was also elected Council President on Monday night, while Moore was elected Council President Pro-Tem in Center Point.

11-year-old Troy Ellis shot and killed TRUSSVILLE — Troy Ellis, 11, a Cahaba Elementary fifth-grader, was shot near Emerald Lake, on Friday, May 1, 2020. His father, Obed Ellis, a coach at Mortimer Jordan, was also injured in the shooting.

Joshua Stewart Burks, of Mobile, was originally charged with reckless manslaughter in connection to the Friday, May 1, 2020 shooting. However, the charge was

upgraded to capital murder in December 2020.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office initially said the shooting was accidental but after an investigation, detectives presented evidence to the District Attorney’s Office and the DA determined an arrest warrant was justified. A Grand Jury decided the charge should be capital murder of a person under the age of 14.

The boy and his father were on a turkey hunt with a group when the boy was killed on Friday, May 1, 2020.

Burks’ attorney, Jonathan McCardle, said the shooting was an accident and he does not believe criminal charges should have been brought against his client. Burks, a former teacher, is a U.S. Marine veteran and amputee.

Trussville PD investigating a dozen crimes involving parked vehicles

TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Police Department released a video of attempted car break-ins, as an example of why it is important to lock your cars.

In 2020, the police department investigated dozens of car break-ins, attempted car break-ins and thefts from vehicles.

Newly released surveillance video from a home on Dawn’s Way shows a person checking for unlocked vehicles parked in a driveway.

The video was recorded on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020.

Chief Eric Rush urges residents to remove all valuables from vehicles and to keep vehicles locked.

“This video is a perfect example of why all vehicles parked outside during the night should be locked,” said Rush. “It is 4 a.m., the suspect simply isn’t going to risk making noise by breaking a window when he knows that people are home and the

noise may awaken them. Unfortunately, he did find some that morning that were not locked and items were stolen.”

“I have an exciting announcement,” Dixon said.

“The city of Clay has been chosen to host the first annual Alabama open in pickleball.

I think it’s our first real opportunity to have something that we can create that will be on par with the Butterbean Festival as we grow into it. I don’t know yet how many participants there will be. Of course, with it being an open tournament, anyone can sign up for the age groups.”

Dixon told the council that he would like its approval to begin contacting sponsors for the event.

“What I’d like to do … is to start contacting sponsors, as well as food vendors,” he said. “In order to keep the people who come, the participants to come in Clay, we set up – for lack of a better term – a food village using food trucks and tents; vendors like come to the Butterbean Festival. Also, bring in some of the restroom trailers so that we don’t have either the guests or the participants allocated to just our concession stand restrooms and then Porta Potties.

“I’ve already talked to the carnival people to book them to go into the Lichtenstein property like they’ve been doing every year in the spring,” said Dixon. “So, I believe if we do that and use all of that connected land, we can still use the elementary school parking lot for parking, but the grass areas behind the library and to the left of the new softball field, we can set up those areas so that there can be rest areas, air conditioned tents or heated – you never know March 25 whether you’re going to need heat or air – but I think it’s a good opportunity for us to set up something, and also showcase what all y’all (the city council) have done as far as tennis and pickleball.”

Dixon said that the city will have a “big push” to get covers on the pickleball courts before the tournament.

“We’ve been through a four- or five-month ordeal now with one steel company that was recommended by Alfa and now they’ve even agreed that this has taken too long,” Dixon said. “We need to move on and make sure we get it done.”

The city already has the funds in place to cover the work through grants the city

COSBY LAKE Additionally, Dixon gave the council updates regarding the Clay Senior Center and Cosby Lake. According to Dixon, in compliance with the latest order from Governor Kay Ivey, the Clay Senior Center will remain closed through August 2021, and potentially through the remainder of the 2021 year.

The dredging project at Cosby Lake is now complete, and all that remains is for the turbidity curtains to be removed.

“If you’ve been by Old Springville, you’ve noticed that the construction site is torn down,” Dixon said.

“The barge is gone, the boat is gone. The curtain is still in the water, and that’s to make sure that the filtration stays in place. If you look on the far side of the yellow curtain, you’ll see the water is back to its blue color, and Shadow Lake is back to its blue color. They’ve tested all the way to the headwaters of Turkey Creek, so everything has passed all their inspections. We still don’t have the survey; they said it would probably be the first of the year now, to make sure that we have the levels that they were shooting for, and they’ve still got a little bit of cleaning up. … I think it’s going to look really nice and have all the depth that we needed to keep that alga from growing.”

SCHOOL GRANTS Councilor Dennis Locke reminded the council that it was their second meeting of the month, and therefore time for the city to award its $500 school grants.

“The pandemic has been extremely hard on everybody, and certainly the schools and the teachers and the administrators,” Locke said. “So, I was having a conversation with (CCHS Principal Michael Lee) and one of the things I wanted to propose to this group … what

we talked about was, because of the fluctuating schedules and the enormous load that’s on the teachers right now, it’s been a little more difficult – especially for the middle and high school – to get the applicants in because that’s just one more thing they have to do, even though they benefit from it. Their focus is on the students, where it needs to be.

“And so, what we’re going to do, if this group is OK with it, is in the absence of a formal applicant from a teacher, we’re going to award it to the principal and then they will report back to us how they used those funds.”

Mayor Charles Webster and the council unanimously agreed to this decision.

“With that said, I do have two formal grants to award, and then we’ll award the middle school and the high school to the principals,” Locke said. “For Clay Elementary, for the first time, we actually had a fifth-grade team make a request. That’s Mrs. Payne, Jenkins, Stith and Miles. The funds will be used to purchase updated dry erase boards for four classrooms. The ones they have today are very old; they are extremely difficult to clean, so they don’t use them much because of that. “… Now the challenge here, and they didn’t ask this, but they’re $194.99 a piece. So to get four of them, that would be $779.96. So, I would like to ask that we give them the full amount to get these four boards, and just say that they will not exceed a cost of $800. That will cover any kind of shipping or anything like that.”

Locke offered a motion to award the grant for the fifthgrade team for up to $800.

The motion passed unanimously.

Subsequently, the council awarded a $500 grant to Bryant Elementary School’s Karen Eddleman (Math) to purchase additional manipulatives and $500 grants each to the principals of CCMS and CCHS. A look ahead at the risks and opportunities in the new year

Throughout this strange and unique year, I’ve shared my opinions and observations with you regarding volatility, and opportunities. As we close the year and look forward to 2021, I wanted to cast a glance forward to what we might anticipate in the coming year.

On the 16th of December, I celebrated the end of my 29th year in the practice of financial planning. Across those years, I have worked through some challenging times. In many ways, 2020 was unique among them.

This year has done much to test our emotional capacity, our mental toughness, our financial resiliency, and in the process, I also believe that it has redefined the resolve with which we approach financial planning and investment management.

I’ve often heard it said that the hardest steel is forged from the hottest fire. Well, the steel with which we’ll meet the coming year could probably be used to cut a diamond.

Nine months ago, I don’t believe anyone thought that we might see the Dow Jones Industrial Average break 30,000 before the end of the year. Clearly, we have come a very long way in a relatively short period of time.

The economy has rebounded strongly, and we find ourselves with many reasons for optimism as we consider the coming year.

However, as I have ad-

Alabama appears on the list of states that may not lose a Congressional seat or

dressed within my previous writings, elevated risks remain in the short term of which we must be mindful.

Thirty days ago, I suggested that the result of the election was still an unknown factor.

That remains the case today.

Indeed, that will not truly become a known factor until after the Senate runoff race in Georgia on 5th of January.

The outcome of those races could have a dramatic impact on the political landscape in Washington. If we remain with a gridlocked Congress, then it is unlikely that massive changes to the Tax Code, fiscal and economic spending policies will likely pass. Without gridlock, then it is entirely possible that we may see egregious changes in not only the tax code, but also in many other areas that could directly and peripherally impact the economy.

As it stands at the end of 2020, I remain with the opinion that neither the stock nor the bond market has priced into itself the impact of a dramatic change in either the Tax Code, or economic and fiscal spending initiatives in Washington.

Historically, markets have not fared as well when one party had complete control as they have during years of gridlock. Because markets are discounting mechanisms, and because I believe that the assumption of no dramatic change has been priced into current market valuations, I believe the markets will be watching the results of the

Georgia runoff races intently.

I do believe that the absence of gridlock could bring with it the potential for a sharp and sudden repricing of risk.

It is something of which we should all be mindful, and to that end, I have encouraged all of our clients to approach the coming weeks in a defensive and hedged manner, while remaining true to the underlying investment objectives that we are trying to achieve.

Ironically, the fact that we are near all-time record high levels in the market, could exacerbate the complexity of this situation. As we have discussed on many occasions before, we live in a high frequency trading environment where algorithms can move in tandem.

Generally, the buffers

around such algorithms become increasingly tighter at higher market levels. We have to be mindful of the potential for a sudden, and politically induced change in market assumptions regarding the economy, on the second trading day of the year, to potentially be a catalyst for another cascade of melting algorithms.

Conversely, I can think of numerous reasons for optimism as we approach the new year. On balance, economic data looks robust, and the momentum of economic growth does not appear to be slowing down.

As I’m writing this, we have two COVID-19 vaccines that are being administered to our front-line medical professionals, first responders, and those who may be

member of the Electoral College.

Alabama’s slow growth as compared to other states around the Nation foreshadowed the state was in store to drop a seat from seven to six in Congress, along with millions of federal dollars. Back in the 1950’s, Alabama had nine Congressmen, so the

state has not been immune to losing seats in the past.

Our state was right on the bubble, but by a mere 6,000 or more residents it looks like Alabama may keep all seven spots in the United States of Representatives.

Alabama leaders worked hard to incentivize citizens to fill out their census form this

past year. And if this report is correct, it may have been successful.

We will not get the official results until later this Spring. There is also still an outstanding case before the United States Supreme Court on whether illegal aliens can be excluded from the census.

elderly and with the highest comorbidities. According to Brian Wesbury at First Trust, there are many more vaccines that are in phase three trials at the moment, so throughout the coming year, we may have many other and different vaccines with which to combat this disease.

I believe that could be of significant psychological benefit as we gradually return to what normalcy means for each of us. I believe that could be of great help as we consume leisure, have dinner at a restaurant, go to see a movie, take a vacation and travel. I also believe that this will support the expansion of jobs creation, and underpin individual consumerism, throughout the coming year.

Should that turn out to be the case, then by extension, I believe we can assume that the velocity of money could remain higher as corporations are incentivized to spend, and expand their capacity to meet the demands of increasingly confident consumers.

This is certainly a strange period of time. I can give you a myriad of reasons, supported by empirical data, for optimism as we move into the new year. Conversely, there are some very real reasons to be concerned about the potential for heightened volatility. One thing I can say with certainty, is that this is not the time for anyone’s portfolio to be on auto pilot.

In closing, throughout the year we have strongly suggested that everyone should have a comprehensive finan-

cial plan that clearly identifies not only the objective being pursued, but also the risk metrics of how you’re trying to achieve the goal. When you have such a plan, navigating periods of time like this becomes easier.

I would suggest remaining true to the provisions of those plans, recognize the reasons for optimism, while being mindful of the risks that remain. Be hedged when appropriate, and have the intestinal fortitude to make periods of market dislocation serve your turn. Inside the Statehouse: We Lost Some Good Ones This Year

As is my annual ritual, my yearend column pays tribute to Alabama political legends who have passed away during the year.

Sonny Cauthen passed away in Montgomery at age 70. He was the ultimate inside man in Alabama politics.

Sonny was a lobbyist before lobbying was a business. He kept his cards close to his vest and you never knew what he was doing. Sonny was the ultimate optimist who knew what needed to be achieved and found like-minded allies with whom to work. When he had something to get done, he bulldozed ahead and achieved his mission. Sonny was a yellow dog Democrat who believed in equal treatment and rewarding hard work. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and mentored a good many young men in Montgomery.

Another Montgomerian who will never be forgotten was Representative Alvin Holmes, who passed away at 81. Like Sonny, Alvin was born and raised and lived his entire life in his hometown of Montgomery. He, too, was a real Democrat and an icon in Alabama politics. Alvin represented the people of Montgomery for 44-years in the Alabama House of Representatives. He was one of the most dynamic and outspoken legislators in Alabama history, as well as one of the longest serving members.

I had the opportunity to serve with Alvin for close to two decades in the legislature.

We shared a common interest in Alabama political history.

In fact, Alvin taught history at Alabama State University for a long time. He was always mindful of the needs of his district, as well as black citizens throughout the state. Alvin was one of the first Civil Rights leaders in Montgomery and Alabama. He helped organize the Alabama Democratic Conference and was Joe Reed’s chief lieutenant for years.

Ironically, we lost another Civil Rights icon this year.

John Lewis was born in rural Pike County in the community of Banks. After graduating from college, John joined the Dr. Martin Luther King as a soldier in the army for Civil Rights. John was beaten by Alabama State Troopers near the Edmund Pettus Bridge on the infamous Bloody Sunday Selma to Montgomery march.

He became a Civil Rights legend in America. He was one of Dr. King’s closest allies.

John became almost as renowned worldwide as a Civil Rights leader as Dr. King.

John moved to Atlanta with Dr. King and was elected to the U.S. Congress from Atlanta and served 33 years with distinction. Even though John was a national celebrity, he would take time out of his busy schedule to drive from Atlanta to rural Pike County to go to church with his mother at her beloved Antioch Baptist Church. John died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 80.

Another Alabama political legend, John Dorrill, passed away in January at age 90.

Ironically, John Dorrill and

John Lewis were both born and raised in rural Pike County near Troy. John Dorrill went to work for the powerful Alabama Farmers Federation shortly after graduating from Auburn.

He worked for the Federation for 43 years. For the last 20 years of his career, he oversaw and was the mastermind of their political plans and operations as Executive Director of the Federation. He retired and lived out his final years on his ancestral home place in Pike County. John Dorrill was one of my political mentors and friends.

Another Montgomery political icon, former Republican State Senator Larry Dixon, passed away only a few weeks ago from COVID-19 complications at age 78. He served over 20 years in the state legislature. Larry epitomized the conservative Republican, and his voting record was right in line with his Montgomery constituency. He was known as “Montgomery’s State Senator” but his ultimate legacy may be as a great family man. Larry was a devoted husband to his wife, Gaynell, and father to his two daughters. Larry was a

good man.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Judge Hugh Maddox recently passed away at age 90. Judge Maddox served 31 years on the Alabama Supreme Court before his retirement in 2001.

One of my favorite fellow legislators and friends, Representative Richard Laird of Roanoke, passed away last week from COVID-19. He was 81 and served 36 years in the Alabama House of Representatives. Richard was a great man and very conservative legislator.

In addition to Richard Laird, Alvin Holmes, and Larry Dixon, several other veteran Alabama legislators passed away this year including Ron Johnson, Jack Page and James Thomas.

We lost some good ones this year, who will definitely be missed as we head into 2021.

Mark E. Casey, age 60, passed away unexpectedly on December 22, 2020 in Birmingham, AL from natural causes.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Smith Casey and his father, Durwood Casey. Mark was also preceded in death by Maria Casey, wife. Mark was a long-time resident of Tarrant, AL and previously employed by UAB as a master lock-smith. Mark will be missed by a host of family and friends. Due to Covid restrictions there will not be an in-person memorial. The family expects to have Mark's monument for viewing at Jefferson Memorial cemetery in Trussville in early 2021.

David Miller Spurlock, age 94, of Birmingham, passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020.

Mr. Spurlock was born on April 14, 1926, in Alabama City, Etowah County, to the late Tommie Bell Hawkins Spurlock and John C. Spurlock. He is survived by his son David W. Spurlock; his son Stanley R. Spurlock and daughterin-law Ann C. Spurlock; his grandson Kurt M. Spurlock (Jenny Evans), and great-grandsons Arthur O. Spurlock and Leo C. Spurlock; his grandson Chad M. Spurlock; his grandson Wade M. Spurlock; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Inez G. Spurlock (who passed away on May 26 of this year); his sisters Elsie S. Rice, Mary S. Baker, and Kathryn Ann Spurlock (who passed away on April 16 of this year); and his brothers John C. Spurlock, Jr., Jack L. Spurlock, and Joe T. Spurlock.

Mr. Spurlock grew up in Attalla, Alabama. He was a graduate of Etowah High School (1943) and the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) (B.S. 1948), where he was a member of Delta Sigma Pi, the professional business fraternity. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II (c. 1944-45). Over the course of his career, he was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, Home Federal Savings & Loan Association, Richard Kelley Chevrolet, and Serra Chevrolet.

Mr. and Mrs. Spurlock, who was a schoolteacher herself, both came from families that strongly valued learning and that have included, in more than one generation and by marriage as well as by birth, a good many teachers, at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. As parents, they always provided for their sons’ education and supported them in their professional opportunities.

On behalf of Mr. Spurlock, his family wishes to recognize and thank the nurses, therapists, caregivers, social workers, and staff of FirstLight Home Care; ComfortCare Home Health; ExpectCare Hospice Care; and North Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, for all their assistance during his last months. And most of all, we are grateful forever to our Mother, who was Daddy’s first, longest, and most dutiful and constant, caregiver.

Shooting From front page

to the 300 Block of Tammy Sue Drive in Center Point to investigate the call of a person who had been shot,” Sgt. Joni Money said.

“Once on the scene deputies

encountered a 30-year-old male who had been shot in the leg.”

According to the initial investigation, the male was inside a vehicle with two other males when one of the males started shooting inside of the vehicle. The

victim was hit in the leg.

Money said he was transported to UAB for treatment of his wounds, which are thought to be non-life threatening. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

Adrienne Lynn Butts, age 37, passed away on Christmas Eve after a long battle with health issues. Adrienne grew up in Clay, Alabama. She graduated from Clay-Chalkville High School. She received her Cosmetology License after graduating from Shelton State Cosmetology School in Tuscaloosa. Adrienne resided in Florida, where she enjoyed her time at the beach, and Tuscaloosa at the time of death. She was a loving mother, who was very proud of her daughter Kelsey. She was preceded in death by her step-brother, Timothy Lee Robertson, Jr.; her grandfather, Jerry Austin Carr; her grandparents, Cliff and Margarett Robertson. She is survived by her father, John William Butts; her mother, Lynn Carr Robertson (Timothy Lee); her daughter, Kelsey Lynn Butts Galloway; sister, Amanda June Reed; brother, Justin Wayne Butts; grandparents, Willie Leon Butts, Shirley Ann Butts, Peggy June Carr, Nancy Diane Carr; plus many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, at 12pm at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

2020 All-Tribune Football Team Pinson Valley’s McKinstry named Player of the Year

TRUSSVILLE — Despite the many challenges created

by COVID-19, the Alabama High School Athletic Association found a way to conduct a full football season, complete with the 2020 Super 7 Championships in Tuscaloosa.

Games were canceled, schedules were changed and opt-outs were constantly feared, but the season limped along and thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many, the Class of 2021 has a senior season to remember.

That incredible feat allows us to present the annual All-Tribune Football Team, which recognizes the top performers from across the Tribune coverage area.

OFFENSE Quarterback: Pearson Baldwin, Springville, senior The senior righty led the Springville offense to the tune of 1,598 yards passing and 16 touchdowns to go with 1,055 yards rushing and 12 more scores in the school’s first

season in Class 6A play.

Running back: Armoni Goodwin, Hewitt-Trussville, senior In three years suiting up for the Huskies, Goodwin set the school’s career rushing mark with 3,367 yards in 26 games played. The LSU signee also set a record for career rushing touchdowns with 43.

Goodwin closed out his record-breaking career with a big senior season: 152 rushes, 1,422 yards and 18 scores.

Running back: Edward Osley, Clay-Chalkville, junior The 195-poind junior led Clay-Chalkville with 1,328 yards and 15 touchdowns on 176 carries this fall. He added another 19 receptions for 246 yards and two scores.

Wide receiver: Marquarius White, ClayChalkville, junior White is the proverbial big-play receiver, averaging 22 yards per reception (40 grabs for 877 yards) for the Cougars. He closed out his junior season with 14 touchdowns, including one as a punt returner.

Double and triple teams couldn’t stop Finkley from getting into the opponent’s backfield this season, as he secured six tackles for loss and applied 24 quarterback hurries. The two-time ASWA All-State selection is expected to play in next year’s Under Armour All-American Game.

Defensive line: Cam Dunklin, Leeds, senior Dunklin was a tough assignment for pass blockers this season, as he led the Green Wave with 16.5 sacks and two defensive touchdowns. He finished his senior season with 96 total tackles.

Defensive line: Julian Peterson, Pinson Valley, senior The senior was a key cog in Pinson Valley’s stout 2020 defense. Peterson signed his National Letter of Intent to Troy University during the early signing period.

Defensive line: James Perkins, Pinson Valley, senior Perkins, a first-team All-

State selection in Class 6A, contributed 7.5 sacks for the state championship-winning Tribe. The 6-foot-1 senior finished with 36 tackles and is committed to Air Force.

Linebacker: Jonathon Harris, Clay-Chalkville, senior Harris earned defensive MVP honors after finishing with 74 stops, including four quarterback sacks for the Cougars this year.

Linebacker: Landen Berguson, Hewitt-Trussville, senior The 5’11” senior led Hewitt-Trussville with 91 tackles this season. Berguson confirmed his nose for the ball with seven tackles and an interception in the NorthSouth All-Star Game on Dec. 18.

Linebacker: Jacob Cain, Leeds, senior Cain finished with 148 stops, including 10 tackles for loss while grabbing a pair of interceptions and as many fumble recoveries for the Green Wave.

Linebacker: Mike Edwards, Hewitt-Trussville, senior

Edwards signed to play with Georgia Southern after finishing with 70 tackles, four interceptions and a fumble recovery this season. Hewitt head coach Josh Floyd describes the senior linebacker as a ‘very versatile player.’

Defensive back: Ga’Quincy McKinstry, Pinson Valley, senior Alabama’s No. 1 recruit in the 2021 cycle pulled twoway duty as a defensive back and receiver to lead Pinson Valley to a Class 6A state championship.

Although he wasn’t challenged often, McKinstry broke up 12 passes and added two interceptions, returning both for touchdowns.

Defensive back: C.J. Douglas, Leeds, sophomore The sophomore safety was, perhaps, the most disruptive player on the Leeds roster, providing 138 tackles, including eight tackles for loss to go with two interceptions, eight pass breakups and four force fumbles. Douglas also blocked five kicks and returned three punts for touchdowns.

Defensive back: Trey Washington, Hewitt-Trussville, senior An Ole Miss signee, Washington brings a blend of physicality and athleticism to the corner position. He pulled down a pair of interceptions this year while covering the opponent’s best receiver.

Defensive back: Jayden Sweeney, Clay-Chalkville, junior Sweeney provided run support from his safety position, stepping up for 50 stops to go with four interceptions for a salty Clay-Chalkville defense.

Athlete: Harold Holloman, Center Point, sophomore The sophomore cornerback tore down six interceptions for Center Point, returning one all the way back for a touchdown. Holloman also added 31 tackles and caught 34 passes for 651 yards four scores.

SPECIAL TEAMS Kicker: Jaren Van Winkle, Clay-Chalkville, senior He was perhaps the most reliable player on the field.

Van Winkle, in his fourth year on the job, delivered on all 54 of his extra point attempts and all eight of his field goal

attempts, including a season-long 44-yarder for ClayChalkville.

Return man: Jaquel Fells Jr., Pinson Valley, senior Fells was a versatile weapon for Pinson Valley this year as a running back, receiver and return man. The first-team All-State recipient earned Tribune Player of the Week honors after running a pun 60 yards for a TD in the second round of the playoffs.

Player of the Year: Pinson Valley senior Ga’Quincy McKinstry McKinstry, a 5-star Alabama signee, played on both sides of the ball to spur a third state championship run at Pinson Valley.

The senior earned Tribune Player of the Week honors three times this season (more than any other player). He was also named the MVP of the Class 6A state championship game after pulling in the game-winning touchdown reception and followed with another MVP showing the following week at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game, where he recorded two INTs and three receptions.

McKinstry ended his senior year with 40 grabs for 616 yards and 10 offensive

scores. He also returned two interceptions for touchdowns to go with 12 pass breakups.
