RECORD TURNOUT
Center Point introduces new mayor, council
Voters wait hours in line to cast ballots
By Erica Thomas, managing editor
TRUSSVILLE — Lines at the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, stretched around buildings, into parking lots and sometimes into roadways in Jefferson and St. Clair Counties. Trussville, Clay and Springville saw record voter turnout, while the same is expected at other local polling places. The draw to the polls was due to increased voter awareness nationwide as President Donald Trump faces off with Joe Biden in the Presidential Election. Donald Trump won Alabama in the 2020 General Election. The president claimed nine electoral votes in Alabama. People in Trussville started lining up at 5:30 a.m. at First Baptist. Over at City Hall, the line had already grown down Railroad Avenue, nearly reaching Kemp’s Kitchen by 8:30 a.m. Throughout the day

the line continued to grow, and part of Railroad Avenue had to be closed. Kemp’s Kitchen opened its food truck in the parking lot of CrossFit Trussville. The restaurant also handed out bottled water and coupons for free chicken sandwiches. CrossFit Trussville opened their bathrooms to the public and played music for those standing in line.
Jason’s Deli brought boxed lunches and passed them out to people who had been waiting in line. izens had to stand in line for over four hours to cast their ballots. The Trussville Police Department escorted the elderly and disabled to the polling site using golf carts. In Springville, Mayor Dave Thomas said the parking lot at City Hall was full and the lines were long all day. The show of voter turnout is a sign that many voters are passionate about this race and the future of America. Secretary of State John Merrill said there has already been a record-breaking number of absentee ballots cast in this election. In Alabama, the Senate race has been hot with Republican Tommy Tuberville taking on incumbent Democrat Doug Jones for the Senate seat. There are also six statewide amendments in Alabama and a special district option amendment for St. Clair County voters.
UPDATE: Company ‘presses pause button’ on annexation for potential quarry into Clay
of those properties, which are currently in Jefferson County. Dixon said before the meeting, he was made aware that Vulcan Materials was planning to have a long-term lease to mine limestone rock from the 700 acres. First the city would have to annex the property into Clay, then rezone it as a I-3 Mining and Manufacturing District.
Dixon although the annexation request has been paused, those opposed to a quarry should know the issue is not over. “They need to be forever vigilant that they don’t pop up at the county seeking to be rezoned,” said Dixon. “If Johnny Walker decided they wanted to move forward with anybody that wanted to mine

PINSON — After weeks of discussions over a possible annexation and rezoning for a quarry in the Clay area, City Manager Ronnie Dixon said a spokesperson for Vulcan Materials informed him the plans have been put on hold. “They are hitting the pause button,” Dixon said. “They do not want me to schedule any meetings for the foreseeable future.” Walker Family Holdings Ltd. owns the land and the owner, Johnny Walker, applied for annexation in early October. The properties in question are: 5886, 5890, 5880 and 6480 Clay Palmerdale Road; 6638 and 6642 Mountain Heights Road; 7280 Self Road; 7605 Highland Drive; and 7641, 7575, 7585 and 7557 Cedar Mountain Road.
