Jefferson County, some cities impose curfew in response to riots
TRUSSVILLE — The Jefferson County Commission approved a countywide curfew on Tuesday, June 2, in an attempt to protect businesses and citizens from possible riots. The curfew is from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m., until June 9. The county is giving municipalities the option to adopt the curfew. Commissioners imposed the curfew following destructive riots in downtown Birmingham. What started as a peaceful protest in Birmingham’s Linn Park, turned into violent riots across the city and in some metro areas. Similar riots have occurred in cities across the United States after the death of George Floyd, a black man who pleased for air as a white Minneapolis police officer held him on the ground with his knee on his neck. In Linn Park, protesters attempted to take down the Confederate Soldiers & Sailors Monument. Mayor Ran-

abama. The city of Trussville was noted in several lists that circulated on social media. Some of the protesters have called to “burn it down,” referring to businesses in the city limits. The city of Trussville responded to the possibility of riots and monitored the situation. However, the city did not adopt the county’s curfew, according to Mayor Buddy Choat. “We’re going to operate as normal under our current, juvenile ordinance we have until further notice,” Choat said on Tuesday. Trussville’s curfew ordinance has been in effect for over 10 years. It applies to anyone under the age of 18. Juveniles may not be in a public place or on the premises of an establishment from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday and from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush said he would rather his officers focus on protecting citizens and businesses. See AFTER RIOTS, Page 4
