TRUSSVILLE — After experiencing overcrowding at some voting locations during the 2020 Presidential election, the city of Trussville has added two new voting precincts for future elections.

The facilities that will host the new voting precincts are the Trussville Civic Center and Faith Community Fellowship. The precincts at City Hall, First Baptist Church Trussville and North Park Baptist Church will still be used, but lines have been drawn to change how many people will be at those facilities.

The city has nearly 20,000 registered voters. In 2020, people were forced to stand in line for hours, particularly at the Trussville City Hall location. The line grew all the way to the railroad crossing on South Chalkville Road at one point and local restaurants brought in free food for people waiting to cast their ballots.

Choat said after that heavy turnout, he, along with City Clerk Dan Weinrib and Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight took the issue to Jefferson County Registrar Barry Stephenson. The new lines were drawn for each voting precinct.

“The ones that are affected the most are the ones that have voted at First Baptist Church,” Choat said. “Some of those will now be voting at the Civic Center. Some of those who voted at City Hall will now be voting at First Baptist Church as well as Faith Community Church.”

Choat said City Hall had over 5,000 voters assigned to that location and now it will be just over 2,500.

Registered voters in Trussville will receive a new voter registration card clarifying where their voting precinct will be, before the next election.

Choat said he would’ve like to have seen a voting precinct put on the South Chalkville side of town, but there was not a location large enough that was ADA compliant.

Addresses of each location are:

Hewitt FBLA supporting Trussville teen’s campaign for LLS Student of the Year with benefit tournament

From The Tribune staff reports

TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt FBLA has partnered with Hannah O’Kelly in her efforts to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The club will host the Strikeout Leukemia Lymphoma Whiffle Ball Tournament on Saturday, May 22, 2021. The event will be held at the Trussville United Soccer Fields at 4601 Pump House Road.

O’Kelley was nominated by the LLS to participate in its Students of the Year program. She said the cause is dear to her heart because of her own personal experiences.

“It’s important to be because I’ve been directly impacted by the effects of cancer with my dad passing away when I was in fifth grade,” said O’Kelley.

O’Kelley’s father, Kevin O’Kelley, died in 2015 from kidney cancer. Since then, she has felt the need to strive to make a difference.

“Curing any kind of cancer is amazing but to hear that the research that goes into treating leukemia and lymphoma helps treatment and research for other cancers is what sold me on this,” she said.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to her campaign. The event is school-led but not a school event.

Spectators are welcome to watch and are also welcome to make donations to the cause.
