MONTGOMERY — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced a relaxing of the state’s current statewide stay-at-home order on Tues-

day in what she has dubbed the “Safer at Home” order, which takes effect at 5 p.m. on Thursday and expires May 15, 2020. The new “Safer at Home” order opens retail stores, beaches and allows for elec-

tive medical procedures. Those businesses that are to remain closed are educational institutions, restaurants, bars, breweries, entertainment venues, athletic faculties and close-contact service providers.

“I look forward to easing back into our routines with caution,” Ivey said during a press conference on Tuesday morning. “Just like we eased into this current stayat-home order. We will also be thoughtful and careful as we ease back into our social interactions.” Though the governor has eased restrictions, she still recommends that people practice social distancing, wear face masks when out in public and maintain hand washing. Gatherings of 10 or more people still are prohibited. Ivey’s “Safer at Home” order falls slightly short of recommendations released by the White House regarding the phased reopening of state economies. Those new guidelines are aimed at easing restrictions in areas with low transmission of the coronavirus, while holding the line in harder-hit locations. See SAFER AT HOME, Page 5

roads and other programs. Alabama is also at risk of losing one congressional seat in the U.S. House of Representa-

tives, which is determined by a state’s population. That loss of a congressional seat means one less voice on the national level

that can speak for the people of Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office warned the public on Thursday, April 23, to be wary of scammers contacting innocent people by phone posing as deputies.

Trussville far exceeds statewide average census response rate; Alabama on path to lose funding, congressional seat TRUSSVILLE – Alabama is set to lose not only funding for programs but a congressional seat following a less-thanideal census response rate for the 2020 United States Census. As of Wednesday, April 23, only 50.1% of Alabamians had responded to the census, which included both responses by mail and via the internet. The national average is 51.6%. Alabama’s neighbors, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, have hovered around a 48% response rate dating back to March 19. Of the four states, Tennessee has the highest rate at 50.9% with Mississippi at 48.7%, Georgia at 48.6% and Florida at 49.8%. This is unlike the northern part of the nation where the average response rate falls between 55-60%. The census is vital for states to receive a portion of the $675 million distributed in federal funds and grants, which help states and local communities support healthcare, hospitals,
