TRUSSVILLE — The number of coronavirus deaths in the state of Alabama had reached 7, on Tuesday, April 14, and Jefferson County still had the most confirmed cases, at 620. In the entire state, 3,953 people had tested positive for the virus. The Trussville City Council met in a virtual meeting on Tuesday and approved several resolutions concerning the coronavirus pandemic. One resolution was to mirror the Department of Revenue’s template on late payment penalty waivers on

certain business classifications. The waivers will cover penalties through June 1, 2020. In another resolution, the city approved a move to waive local alcohol tax through June 30, 2020. The council also approved resolutions in support of the Stay at Home Order issued by Governor Kay Ivey. Coun-

cil President Zack Steele first consulted with city attorneys to see how the city could approve a stricter curfew to help police enforce the order. However, the state’s order already allows for the enforcement of guidelines Steele was inquiring about. Steele said the resolutions passed supporting state orders

will inform the public of how serious the city is taking the coronavirus pandemic. “This is going to let the public know that our police department and our public safety folks are going to be serious about enforcing this public health order,” said Steele. “We’re not going to get back to normal until this virus gets mitigated.” Another resolution was approved showing support of the Gov. Ivey’s and the State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris’ mandates concerning COVID-19.

St. Clair County Schools suspending meal program By Erica Thomas, managing editor

ASHVILLE — The St. Clair County School system has suspended its meal program because of the inability to maintain a safe distance during the preparation and distribution of food. In a Facebook post, the school system said the decision was not made lightly.

TRUSSVILLE — During the coronavirus crisis, many families are struggling with staying at home. Whether they have lost their jobs or have to stay home to care for their children, some Trussville families are making the best out of a trying time. One couple that lives in Stockton is using their talent to bring smiles to neighbors. Katie and Alec Dixon own a photography business. They decided to offer free porch sessions to anyone interested. They call it The Front Porch Project. Alec Dixon said he was inspired by another photographer who did the same in his neighborhood, in Tennessee. “I saw he had posted it in his neighborhood Facebook group,” said Dixon. “Some of the families did funny poses and got dressed up.” So, the Dixon’s got to work on a plan. They had to map out a route and consider the time of day they could get the best shots at each home. “We had to take the time to figure out where the sun would be at different times,”

said Dixon. After he posted the idea in Stockton’s Facebook group, he said he was surprised at the reaction he received. “That post just blew up,” Dixon said. “It was really to bring a little bit of light to the season we are in. A lot of people like dressing up and feeling like a star.”

The couple is already accustomed to taking daily walks in their neighborhood, but Dixon said photography walks has helped them meet a lot of their neighbors. “This was supposed to be something fun for the neighborhood and for people that we’ve never met,” said Dixon. “It was a great way to meet

people, but it was also meant to raise money.” The Dixon’s asked anyone interested in photos to donate to a special cause. “One of the biggest reasons we did it is that we encouraged people to donate,” said Dixon. See FRONT PORCH, Page 5
