Attorney General, local law enforcement come together in fight against police killings in Alabama By Erica Thomas, managing editor
MONTGOMERY — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall held a press conference on Wednesday. Feb. 12, to address law enforcement officer shootings in the state. Marshall challenged parents, teachers, news media, policymakers and citizens to make a difference to help law enforcement in Alabama gain respect and understanding. The most recent killing of a police officer happened on Feb. 4, when Kimberly Police Officer Nick O’Rear was shot in the head during a chase. He died the next day. Marshall called the date historic for the state of Alabama. He also reviewed all deadly police shootings that happened in 2019. “Each of these events, isolation, is unacceptable,” said Marshall. when viewed together, the deaths of these heroes are even worse.” Marshall said the past 13 months have been the deadliest for law enforcement in Alabama history. “The first civil right of ev-

SPRINGVILLE — The St. Clair County School system announced on Monday, Feb. 17, buses will no longer be able to travel in parts of the Legacy Springs Subdivision, due to deteriorating road conditions.
BIRMINGHAM — Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates confirmed the identity of a man found dead inside the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham. Patrick Evan Dobbs, 28, was found unresponsive in his bed on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, around 6:06 a.m.

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville City Council met Monday night, Feb. 17, for the second regularly scheduled meeting of the month.
The meeting was preceded by a work session to address various agenda items including the ongoing work to create a better plan for supporting travel and providing better meals at the city’s senior center.
The regular session opened with a public hearing on rezoning a portion of the Walker / Elam property across from City Hall. The rezoning would allow a new owner to develop climate-controlled storage on the property. The
proposal met no opposition in the hearing and was passed in the regular session. The developer will work with city planners on the design of the property.
LEEDS — A regular meeting of the Leeds Board of Education began with a proposal by several high school seniors to begin a project that would allow students to paint their own parking spaces, with approval of school administration.
