Trussville family continues search for missing daughter
I-59/20 bridge replacement deadline looming
From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE — The family of Paighton Houston, missing since Friday, Dec. 20, made an impassioned plea on social media for her safe return. “We have to go on facts and we have some known facts at this time, but not much,” Charlaine Houston said. “We have not seen video surveillance yet so we don’t have answers other than what detectives have released.” Paighton Houston, 29, was last seen leaving the Tin Roof bar at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, with two people the Birmingham Police described as “heavy set black men.” Employees of different businesses in Lakeview around the Tin Roof said police have canvassed the area to check video from multiple businesses. The ordeal has been difficult for the close knit family. In their hometown of Trussville, yellow bows — referred to by Mayor Buddy Choat as “Bows for Hope” — have started appearing as a reminder to pray for Paighton Houston’s return to her family. “This is terribly heartbreaking, frustrating and

scary for all of us, but our concern is for Paighton,” Charlaine Houston said. “I know my daughter and she is with someone she doesn’t know and in danger. She is family oriented and had plans for Saturday with her best friend, sister and family.” Charlaine Houston said the family is trying to piece together the events of the day her daughter went missing. “I know she left our home Friday morning for work and was in contact with her family throughout the day,” Charlaine Houston said. “She sent the message to the coworker that she rode with to the Tin Roof that ‘if I call answer, I don’t know these people and
I feel in trouble.’ We want to know every detail and we want Paighton to come home safely to us.” Paighton Houston’s disappearance has reached Gov. Kay Ivey’s office, who offered a $5,000 reward as of Friday. That offer came after Choat reached out to State Representative Danny Garrett, who in turn contacted the governor’s office. Crimestoppers of Metro Alabama had previously issued a reward for the same amount, bringing the total reward to $10,000. “Unfortunately, another female is missing in the state of Alabama,” Ivey said. “The whereabouts of Paighton Laine Houston have been unknown since Friday, December 20. In the midst of the busy holiday season, it is critical that we support
Paighton, her family and law enforcement to ensure we do everything possible to bring her home. “I am issuing a $5,000 reward to help encourage anyone with credible information to contact the appropriate authorities and help make that happen.” The family expressed gratitude for the widespread support and believes keeping the story at the forefront of everyone’s attention is paramount. “Our family appreciates everything that everyone is doing to help share her story,” Charlaine Houston said. “Thank you all for the prayers, love and support. This is a horrible nightmare for us and especially Paighton. Keep sharing her story and bring Paighton home!”
Trussville Girl Scout’s Gold Award project inspired by cousin killed in distracted driving crash By Erica Thomas, managing editor
TRUSSVILLE — A Girl Scout from Trussville is working to spread awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Alex Rudick is an ambassador for Girl Scout Troup 872. For her Gold Award project, Rudick was inspired by her cousin, Jessica Butler, of Moody, who was killed in a crash in 2017. “I mainly wanted to do it because everybody my age was about to start driving,” said Rudick. “Most everybody drives so this affects everybody instead of just one group of people.” In fact, Rudick originally wanted to focus on Alzheimer’s Disease for her Gold Award project. But all that changed after May 26, 2017. “After Jessica passed away, I knew I wanted to do something with that because it impacted so many people,” said Rudick. Jessica Butler’s father, Don, wrote a letter that was read at her funeral. The letter pleaded to Jessica’s family and friends to put down their phones behind the wheel. After Rudick heard the words from a mourning father, she went home and started
on her new goal for her Gold Award project. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,166 people were killed in distracted driving accidents in 2017. Rudick said while the statistics are disturbing, the reality is each and every one of those people had family and friends that will forever be impacted by their deaths.
“You hear about people dying in car accidents, but when it happens to someone in your family, it really hits you hard and then that’s all you think about,” said Rudick. “People don’t really think about it and they don’t think it will happen to them, but when it does, you can’t take it back.” Rudick also wants people to know that distracted driving is
not just texting and driving. She has made several videos showing other forms of distracted driving including eating, taking selfies and talking with friends. In one of Rudick’s videos, she sits down with Jessica Butler’s parents and friends to talk about the loss of their loved one. Butler was a 2007 graduate of Moody High School. In her senior year, she was voted Senior Class Favorite and Prettiest Smile. Butler graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2011. After 13 years as a Girl Scout, Rudick is happy to have a Gold Award project, but for her, it’s not all about the award. It’s about saving lives. “If this reaches just one person, then I will have succeeded in my Gold Award project,” said Rudick. Rudick has talked with lawmakers about creating a hands-free law for the state of Alabama. Her videos have also been made available to Driver’s Education instructors statewide. All of the videos Rudick has made, the letter read at Butler’s funeral and more information on distracted driving are posted on Rudick’s website, https://onedistraction.weebly.com/.
