Pheffer Amato Brings Flood Help to District By Forum Staff Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (DHoward Beach) has secured flood barriers for constituents of the 23rd Assembly District. The assemblywoman’s office has been helping residents across the Rockaway Peninsula, and in neighborhoods of Howard Beach and Ozone Park, file flood damage reports—stemming from recent storms—with the City. Pheffer Amato was able to arrange the giveaway of inflatable barriers that range in size and can be used to prevent water from entering a property. This was done through a partnership with the City Department of Environmental Protection. “The question isn’t whether we’re getting another storm like Sandy, but when,” said Pheffer Amato. “As we are approaching the 11 year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, we are reminded that we must stay prepared. Pol’s Animal Supply Drive Fetches Fortune By Forum Staff Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) recently had her office filled to the brim with animal supplies donated by residents throughout the community. For weeks on end, Pheffer Amato noted this week, the assemblywoman’s office was a revolving door of residents from the Rockaway Peninsula, along with Broad Channel, Howard Beach and Ozone Park who dropped off supplies. Donations from the community ranged from food, to toys, collars, water bowls, along with blankets and sheets. Pheffer Amato dropped off a portion of the accumulated donations to the Animal Care Center, which included over 150 pounds of food and over 250 sheets and towels. The remaining blankets and sheets, food and toys went to several local
animal shelters in South Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula. “This is a community that loves its animals and that was shown through this amazing level of generosity,” Pheffer Amato said. “Everyone who came here to drop off supplies shared their own story about their furry friend because in this district we treat our animals with love, and appreciate the work the rescues do. I am so grateful for our community’s engagement as we are able to show our love and support to animals.” The ACC had reached out to the assemblywoman due to her well known love of animals as it was in desperate need of supplies. Pheffer Amato had also recently worked with the 100th Precinct to rescue a dog and several cats from a condemned house in Broad Channel.
All of us are familiar with the various health awareness campaigns that occur each month. January has several and one we’d like to talk with you about is National Glaucoma Awareness. Glaucoma is an eye disease that can damage the optic nerve. It is the optic nerve that supplies visual information from your brain directly to your eyes. The most common form of this disease is primary open-angle glaucoma, which is especially dangerous because it has no symptoms except gradual vision loss. For this reason it is imperative that you do yearly comprehensive eye exams so that vision changes can be detected and monitored. Acute-angle closure glaucoma, is a medical emergency. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately: Severe eye pain accompanied by nausea, vomiting, redness in the eye, sudden vision disturbances including blurred vision, and or seeing colored rings around lights. Glaucoma can be caused by fluid buildup in the channels of your iris or cornea.
Normally, a clear fluid, known as aqueous humor, passes through these channels and fills the front part of the eye. If however, there is a blockage or partial obstruction, the pressure in your eye may increase. This can lead to damage of the optic nerve and loss of sight. While glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, no one knows what causes the increase of pressure (IOP) in the eyes. IOP can be caused by dilating eye drops, medications like corticosteroids, high blood pressure or reduced blood flow to the optic nerve. People 60 and over are at increased risk and for African-Americans the risk grows after 40. Patients with diabetes and high blood pressure and heart disease also have an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Cops Search for Ozone Park Armed Robber
Police this week sought the public’s help in catching a man wanted for robbing an Ozone Park establishment last week. On Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 10:15 p.m. at 150-19 Cross Bay Blvd., an individual entered the establishment, displayed a firearm and removed approximately $3,000 from the register. The suspect struck the victims over the head with the firearm before fleeing.

City Moves to Shut Down Sellers, Distributors of Flavored Vapes By Forum Staff Mayor Eric Adams and City Corporation Counsel Judge Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix on Monday took steps to immediately prevent three companies from distributing and selling flavored e-cigarettes (vapes) in violation of federal, state, and city laws. The City of New York today filed a motion for a preliminary injunction against Magellan Technology, Demand Vape (Magellan’s sister company), and Empire Vape as part of a lawsuit initiated in July by the Adams administration. The motion includes new evidence of how the companies continue to flagrantly violate the law in spite of the City’s ongoing lawsuit. “Our administration will not sit by while companies break our laws, sell illegal products, and poison our children,” Adams said. “We will use every tool in our toolbox to protect young people from the corruptive influence of illegal flavored nicotine products and hold bad actors responsible for endangering the health of our children. The FDA affirmatively rejected Magellan Technology’s application for pre-market authorization for these products, yet Magellan, Demand Vape, and Empire Vape continued to distribute and sell them. Additionally, an investigation into flavored vape availability at a small sample of retail outlets conducted as part of the Adams administration’s ongoing lawsuit revealed that fla-
vored vapes distributed by the defendants were available at no fewer than 200 stores throughout New York City. Most e-liquids provide nicotine levels far exceeding those of conventional cigarettes — some with as much nicotine as 175 to 350 cigarettes. Additionally, federal health authorities, including the U.S. surgeon general and the FDA, say youthfriendly flavors in e-cigarettes — such as “strawberry milkshake,” “cola,” and “pina colada” — are among the flavors that tempt kids to “vape” high levels of nicotine. Child-friendly, cartoon character packaging on e-cigarettes targeted at young people has also contributed to the epidemic of nicotine addiction among young people in middle and high school. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that 15.2 percent of New York City high school students and 7 percent of New York City middle school students surveyed reported current use of electronic vapor products. The FDA has not authorized the sale of any flavored vape (except tobacco-flavored), and every sale of a flavored vape in the U.S. is illegal under the federal Family Smoking and Protection Act. Outright flavor bans have also been enacted in New York City and across New York state, as well as in many other cities and states nationwide.

By Forum Staff Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. held a press conference on Monday to announce a nearly $5 million capital allocation to fund improvements across six different NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health clinics in Queens. The press conference took place at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health Springfield Gardens, located at 134-64 Springfield Blvd., which is receiving $2.5 million of
the Borough President’s $4.85 million allocation. That funding will go toward the replacement of the facility’s problematic, 20-year-old rooftop air handling unit, which has a history of malfunctioning and interfering with the clinic’s ability to serve patients. Senior NYC Health + Hospitals leadership, Gotham Health clinic administrators and healthcare workers joined Richards at Monday’s event. Since taking office in December 2020, Borough President Richards has allocated nearly $33 million to healthcare institutions across Queens.
MTA Leadership and Police Chiefs View Safety Protocols in the Transit System By Forum Staff Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber on Friday joined MTA Chief Safety and Security Officer Patrick Warren, MTA Police Chief John Mueller, and NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper to view safety protocols at Grand Central Terminal and the Grand Central 4,5,6, 7, S subway station. Currently, the NYPD says law enforcement is not aware of any specific, credible threats against public transit or the region.
The MTA is in contact with local, State, and federal law enforcement partners to continually assess threat conditions. Last Thursday night, Gov. Kathy Hochul directed additional State Police and National Guard to patrol key transportation hubs. “While there is no credible threat, we have increased our presence at the major transportation terminals and throughout the transit system under the leadership of the NYPD,” Lieber said. “We are more visible and more prepared than ever, and we encourage customers if you see something, say something.”

He climbed on top of the woman, poked her with the tip of the knife, placed his hands on her mouth and threatened to gut her. He asked her which part of her body she wanted him to cut first. Brightman told her to turn up the music that was playing and looked through a window to check for neighbors. He then told the woman that he was going to kill her.
He taped the woman’s mouth shut, bound her wrists behind her back and demanded she sit in a corner of the room. “The defendant terrorized his girlfriend in her own home. Wielding a knife, he threatened to gut her; he threatened to kill her. She is fortunate to have escaped with her life,” Katz said. “I urge women who may have been victimized by the defendant, or need safety planning services, or help in securing an order of protection or shelter placement, to call our 24-hour domestic violence hotline.” If convicted, Brightman faces up to 25 years in prison.

By Forum Staff An indictment was unsealed on Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court charging Queens resident Douglas Welch, also known as “Paradise,” with sex trafficking by force, sex trafficking conspiracy, interstate prostitution and promotion of prostitution. The charges in the indictment relate to Welch allegedly forcing victims to engage in prostitution, in among other places, a stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in Brooklyn known as the “Penn Track.”
The Penn Track has for years operated as an open-air market where Welch and others have forced trafficking victims to earn money for them by engaging in commercial sex acts with customers in cars or nearby hotels. As alleged in court documents, Welch, 40, recruited women to work on his behalf along the Penn Track and used threats and violence to force those victims to engage in commercial sex with customers, and provide him with the profits. Welch routinely threatened his victims with physi-
cal violence if they disobeyed his orders, telling one victim, “if you f*** with the pimping, I’m gonna crack your head” and threatening to “slap the s***” out of another victim for not listening to him. He also bragged about knocking unconscious trafficking victims who disrespected him or other traffickers, including describing one instance in which he grabbed a woman by the throat, knocked her onto the sidewalk and then body slammed her for disrespecting another pimp along the Penn Track. Welch struck a victim with a baseball bat for refusing to engage in prostitution after he directed her to do so, telling another sex trafficker that he wanted to leave a “stain on her brain.” “As alleged, Welch has trafficked multiple women for his own financial benefit while boasting about the cruel and brutal violence he has inflicted on the vulnerable victims,” Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said. “Running a brazen, open-air commercial sex market in East New York or anywhere else in our district is unacceptable, dangerous to our communities, and especially harmful to women caught in this terrible cycle of abuse.
