South Queens Solemnly Marks 20th Anniversary of Flight 587 Disaster

By Michael V. Cusenza Area residents braved inclement weather Friday to mark the 20th anniversary of the American Airlines Flight 587 disaster at the memorial in Rockaway Park.

On Nov. 12, 2001, an Airbus A300B4-605R took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport destined for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. But AA Flight 587 crashed into Belle Harbor. All 260 people aboard the plane (251 passengers and nine crew members) were killed, along with five people on the ground.

“With the horrible tragedy of 9/11 still fresh in our minds, just two short months later New York faced another terrible plane crash when American Airlines flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor 20 years ago,” State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) said. “Today we remember the 260 people on the flight, along with the five people on the ground that lost their lives that day, and pray for the family and friends that they left behind.”

City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) added, “The passing of time will never erase the pain and grief but our thoughts and prayers continue to be a source of strength for the families.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered remarks on Friday at the memorial.

“Twenty years ago, it's extraordinary to imagine – it's hard to believe 20 years have passed but we all can feel, right here, what it felt like those days just after 9/11, feeling that pain already. And then another tragedy, a tragedy felt from the Dominican Republic all the way here to Belle Harbor. 265 good souls lost. And that pain does not go away, but we still, even amidst the pain, appreciate all the people who came in that moment to try to help – the first responders, the people from the neighborhood who tried to help from that moment on. And then for 20 years since, the way you have all helped each other, you've been there for each other. You've created a community and out of the pain, you found something so good and noble.”

“Consumers need immediate relief at the gas pump, and so I am urging the administration to approve fuel sales from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve,” Sen. Schumer said.

By Forum Staff Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday called for the tapping of the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to help ease prices at the gas pump.

Schumer called on the Biden Administration to move forward with sales from the reserve as he also doubled down on how critical it is to implement Build Back Better.

Schumer said we need a real solution to this problem of price shocks from wildly fluctuating fossil fuels and that implementing Build Back Better would help all Americans move off our dependence on fossil fuels to cleaner, cheaper and more reliable electric cars and appliances. Schumer said, in the meantime, tapping some of the reserves’ 600 million barrels right now can help pump relief into current prices.

Last week, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said that President Biden was considering tapping into the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve amid rising crude oil prices.

In an interview with CNN, the Secretary said Biden is "looking at all of the tools that he has" to address high prices at the pump, including tapping into U.S. oil reserves. Schumer, today, said this is a tool worth tapping. Schumer said he has urged former presidents, like President Bush, to tap the reserves during specific moments, with success.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the world’s largest supply of emergency crude oil, according to the SPR website. “It was established primarily to reduce the impact of disruptions in supplies of petroleum products

and to carry out obligations of the United States under the international energy program,” the website reads. The oil is stored underground at different sites along the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico. Altogether, the SPR can hold 714 million barrels of oil. Right now, it is holding roughly 600 million barrels.

According to the SPR website, an emergency withdrawal has only happened three times in its history. The first time being 1991, during President George H. W. Bush’s administration’s Operation Desert Storm. The second time was in 2005 as part of President George W. Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina. The third and most recent withdrawal happened in 2011, a response to a loss of crude oil due to supply disruptions in various countries.

Schumer says that COVID-19’s pandemic supply chain disruptions include a similar emergency fact pattern, and that approving fuel sales from the SPR –to ease pricing on the heels of the worst of the pandemic—should be done.

According to AAA, today’s national gas price average is $3.41, up from $2.12 a year ago at this time.

“COVID has wreaked havoc on all of our supply chains, no industry spared, with fuel supply and prices at the top of the list,” Schumer said. “Consumers need immediate relief at the gas pump, and so I am urging the administration to approve fuel sales from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve. The plan is not a cure-all, because we also need a real solution to this problem of price shocks from wildly fluctuating fossil fuels, but it can help ease prices ahead of holiday travel.”

DA Katz Announces Grant Winners

By Forum Staff Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz on Wednesday announced grant funding to 28 community-based organizations for the implementation of her Office’s Community Youth Development and Crime Prevention Project.

The initiative aims to provide youth activities and wrap-around services to help prevent crime and keep young people out of the criminal justice system, Katz said.

The request for proposals was announced by Katz in June. According to the DA, the goals of the program are to facilitate a collaborative and community-driven approach that will foster positive relationships between the community and law enforcement, reduce youth crime, improve selfconfidence among young people, increase exposure to positive adult role models, as well as improve academic performance and school attendance.

The recipients selected for the Program have already established proven strategies with youth development program models and will utilize the funding to develop effective services for Queens-based youth and their families.

City Launches Employment Tool for Veterans

By Forum Staff The City recently launched VetConnectPro, a first-in-the-nation employment tool that connects veterans looking for work in the NYC public and private sectors to matching employment opportunities.

According to de Blasio administration officials, dvs.yourjobpath.com provides veterans and their families access to a wide array of hiring features, including a proprietary military skills translator, a dashboard that provides job postings from city agencies as well as information on local, state, and federal benefits, civil service exams, and recommended online job training.

According to the administration, New York City is the first major municipality to build an employment tool for veterans to have access to and connect to local job opportunities. The military translator, operated by JobPath, can translate and match over 7,000 military careers to job openings available on the site. The site also includes information about civil service exams, fee waivers for veterans, and special hiring programs for people with disabilities.

“When veterans leave the service, they can feel overwhelmed trying to take the wide range of training that they received and showcase their skills to an employer,” said City Department of Veterans’ Services Commissioner James Hendon. “Vet-

ConnectPro makes it easy for them to cut through the differences between the military and civilian world so these highly civically-engaged citizens can find jobs with the city and for NYC agencies to identify, reach, and hire veterans.”

Two city agencies, the NYC Department of Small Business Services, and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, are already using VetConnectPro to search for workers and assist Veterans seeking employment with additional agencies joining on an ongoing basis.

“MOPD is thrilled to be a part of VetConnectPro, partnering with DVS and JobPath.com to connect all New Yorkers, including Veterans with disabilities, to jobs in city government through the 55-a program and opportunities in the private sector through our Business Development Council. By advancing NYC hiring through state of the art technology, MOPD’s NYC: ATWORK initiative and DVS finally have the system in place to engage and support the city’s largest untapped talent pipeline to obtain their career goals,” Ozone Park native and NYC MOPD Commissioner Victor Calise said.

After launch, VetConnectPro will continue to open the site to private sector companies seeking to hire Veterans or spouses in the five boroughs.

Progressives Urge Hochul to Make Public Transit Funding a Top State Budget Priority

By Michael V. Cusenza The Working Families Party, Democratic Socialists of America, Riders Alliance, other advocates and State legislators penned a letter on Friday to Gov. Kathy Hochul urging her to secure the future of New York’s public transit system, threatened with fiscal collapse by the COVID-19 pandemic, in the State budget due March 31.

The pandemic created the worst-ever crisis at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New York’s congressional delegation secured nearly $15 billion to keep buses and trains running.

But federal aid is running out, leaving a multibillion dollar budget deficit. Fare hikes are on the table for 2022. Deep service cuts will follow without new revenue, the progressives said. Meanwhile, as the economy changes, New Yorkers need more transit service and affordable fares, not fiscal austerity, the groups added.

“We, the undersigned, a broad coalition of transit planners, non-profit organizations, economists, and elected leaders, call on you to make service expansions, not service reductions, that can meet New York's changing needs and bolster its recovery,” they wrote to the governor. “Austerity in the shape of fare hikes, service cuts, and job losses could not come at a worse time for our state.”

The essential workers who are bringing New York through the pandemic deserve a system that rises to meet their contributions to our state.

As the leader of our state with the power to determine the MTA’s future direction, we urge you to make its growth a top priority. More and better service can breathe new life into a city that has faced such immense challenges in the past 18 months. Frequent and reliable service at all times of the day brings significant quality of life improvements to millions of New Yorkers every day, all while positively defining a backbone of New York’s image. New York can afford it. We can’t afford the alternative.

“At its best, transit policy in New York has brought us creative new funding sources, seasoned global leaders, and an immensely dedicated workforce. We urge you to build on these successes and are encouraged by your willingness to work collaboratively with independent professionals at the MTA to keep doing better for New Yorkers.”

Bronx Man Indicted for Murder of South Ozone Park Resident

possession of a weapon in the second degree. Crespo was ordered to return to court on Dec. 21.

BY Forum Staff A Far Rockaway man has pleaded guilty in a September 2020 shooting on Rockaway Beach Boulevard that left one dead and two others injured, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Friday.
