By Michael V. Cusenza In what The New York Times called a “stunning repudiation of the establishment,” Jamaica Estates native Donald Trump on Tuesday was elected the 45th President of the United States, soundly defeating the heavily favored Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The Republican Trump, 70, carried 30 states to 279 electoral votes and the improbable victory. Clinton, 69, narrowly won the popular vote, but was able to notch only 228 electoral votes.

The GOP candidate’s win is nothing short of historic, and capped a brutal, bruising 18-month slog to the White House; a race that featured more than its fair share of cringe-worthy moments—whether on social media or the stump—nearly all courtesy of the Teflon Donald.

“We showed America the silent majority is no longer silent,” Trump said. “Today, we created an America that WINS again.

Today, we made our hopes, our dreams – our limitless potential – a reality. Today, we made history. Today, we created a government that is once again of, by and for the people.”

The Queens County Republican Party congratulated Trump on Wednesday.

Flanked by her mentors, outgoing Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and former assemblymember, her mother, Audrey Pheffer, newly elected Stacey Pheffer Amato, celebrated a crushing victory levied on opponent Alan Zwirn.

“The Queens native’s ‘Make America Great Again’ movement connected with millions of voters across the country, securing the win for a Republican House and Senate,” noted QGOP Chairman Bob Turner. “President-elect Trump’s pledge to fix Washington and our inner cities, rebuild our infrastructure, take care of our veterans and put millions of people back to work is real change for all Americans.”

In the two local races featuring Forumendorsed candidates, Democrats Stacey Pheffer Amato and Joe Addabbo, Jr.,

trounced their respective opponents on their way to Albany.

Pheffer Amato succeeds Phil Goldfeder in representing the 23rd Assembly District – Rockaway, Broad Channel, Hamilton Beach, Lindenwood, Howard Beach, and Ozone Park – the same seat her mom, Queens County Clerk Audrey Pheffer, held for more than two decades.

“We have been lucky to have truly dedicated public servants who have been instrumental in our recovery from Sandy and who have been strong voices in City Hall

and in Albany,” said Pheffer Amato. “I am humbled by the community's faith in me to continue this important work and I intend to be a strong advocate for our families.”

Pheffer Amato would later add, “Tonight, I follow in the footsteps of our Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and my mother, Audrey Pheffer. My mother taught me the importance of public service from an early age and, together with Assemblyman Goldfeder, supported me at every step along this campaign. I look forward to following their example as our next Assembly Member.”

Addabbo has represented the 15th Senatorial District – Broad Channel, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Glendale, Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hills, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, South Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Woodside and the Rockaways – since he was first elected to the seat in 2008.

Wills Joins DHS, BOE for Awareness Campaign for Voter-Registered Homeless

By Forum Staff City Councilmen Ruben Wills (D-Jamaica) and Ben Kallos (DManhattan) and the City Department of Homeless Services last Friday announced a joint effort with the Board of Elections to ensure the city’s voter-registered homeless were fully aware of where they had to go on Election Day to cast their ballot.

Wills noted that federal law guarantees homeless citizens the right to vote, so long as the person is: a U.S. citizen; 18 years of age

by Dec. 31 of the year in which he or she registers to vote; is 18 years old by the date of the primary, general, or other election; lives at their present address at least 30 days prior to an election; is not in jail or on parole for a felony conviction; cannot claim the right to vote elsewhere; and is registered to vote.

“Three weeks ago, a homeless constituent came into my district office and claimed she had been disenfranchised,” Wills recalled.

The joint effort was announced a week after the City Council approved a piece of legislation, originally introduced by Wills two years ago, that requires the Department of Correction to provide absentee ballot applications and forms to the voting eligible individuals in its custody, and forward them to the City BOE. The materials would be provided no later than two weeks prior to any primary, special, or general election.

AG Office Negotiates Deal to Cut Price of Heroin Antidote across State through 2017

Naloxone is a highly effective antidote that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose.

By Forum Staff State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recently announced an agreement with Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to extend a price cut for naloxone, the highly effective antidote that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, for all agencies in New York through January 2018.

The agreement stipulates that Amphastar will cover a $6 rebate per dose, which will also automatically increase, dollar-fordollar, to match future growth in the wholesale price, Schneiderman said. As part of the agreement, the rebate is available to all public entities, including but not limited to the State Department of Health, New York City, the governments of individual New York counties, and the drug treatment centers and harm reduction programs they fund. Overall, Schneiderman noted, the deal reduces the price of naloxone by nearly 20 percent.

“We need every tool at our disposal to respond to the opioid addiction crisis, and that includes making sure that life-saving medication like naloxone is available to first responders who are on the front lines to treat victims of overdose,” the attorney general said. “The price cut negotiated by my office has made this antidote more affordable for hundreds of communities across the state, and we will continue to look for ways to empower communities in New York to respond to this crisis.”

The deal announcement comes as new data show that the price cut first negotiated by Schneiderman’s Office last year has made it possible for more than 200 agencies across the state to obtain a total of 278,000 discounted syringes of naloxone, saving $1.6 million in costs since February 2015.

And in the past year, a number of states across the country, including Ohio, Delaware, and Rhode Island, have reached deals with Amphastar patterned off the price cut that the attorney general initially negotiated in 2015.

“Naloxone has saved thousands of lives and needs to be in the hands of as many New Yorkers as possible,” said Jeremy Saunders, co-executive director of Voices of Community Activists & Leaders, a statewide grassroots membership organization that helps low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS, the drug war, and mass incarceration. “We appreciate Attorney General Schneiderman’s continuing efforts to negotiate reduced prices, especially as overdose deaths are on the rise. Ultimately, price should never be a barrier to saving a life – we look forward to working together to ensure that Naloxone is always affordable for those who need it most.”

Last month, Schneiderman announced a national settlement with the global health insurer Cigna to end its policy of requiring prior authorization for medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, removing a “significant barrier” for those suffering from opioid addiction to access treatment.

In September, Schneiderman and law enforcement authorities from across the country to announce the indictment of 25 people for their role in an alleged national heroin smuggling ring, and the seizure of more than 33 kilos of heroin – one of the largest takedowns in Empire State history.

And in October, the AG and State Police announced the seizure of more than 20 kilos of heroin and cocaine and the indictment of 14 people as part of an alleged narcotics trafficking ring.

Flushing Pair Charged with Peddling Fake Designer Goods

By Forum Staff A man and woman from Flushing are charged with trademark counterfeiting following the seizure of more than $250,000 worth of fake designer goods recovered from three different storage units in Ridgewood, Queens. Dozens of boxes and bags filled with alleged knock-off handbags, wallets, belts and even cigarette lighters were confiscated. District AttorneyBrown said, “Selling fake designer goods is not a victimless crime. Counterfeit operations, such as this one, fuel an underground economy that rakes in hundreds of thousands of dollars to alleged criminals. These cash-only transactions also rob both City and State municipalities out of much-needed tax revenue. Also, these knock-offs damage both the reputation and brand of designers because the merchandise is inferior in both material and quality.” District Attorney Brown added, “My office is committed to working closely with the NYPD and all our law enforcement partners to close down these illegal operations and prosecute all those involved in selling knock-off merchandise.” The District Attorney identified the defendants as Xu Jing, 46, and Jing Ye, 43, both of 41st Avenue in the Flushing section of Queens. Pols Announce $47M in Fed Funds for Sandy-Related Repairs in Rockaway

Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (both D-N.Y.) and Mayor Bill de Blasio last week announced $46,965,661 in federal funding for the City Office of Management and Budget on behalf of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for repairs to three buildings containing public services for the beaches in Rockaway.

OMB will also be reimbursed for repairs made to four boardwalk sections, known as “entry islands,” which provide public access to the beaches, according to the elected officials. The facilities were damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy and repairs were necessary in order for Rockaway’s beaches to open up in time for the summer after the storm.

“Rockaway is home to some of the best beaches in New York City and when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the community, New York City worked hard to make sure public access areas and damaged facilities were repaired in time for the summer season,” Schumer said. “This federal funding will help make sure local taxpayers are not entirely on the hook for the repairs made to Rockaway’s beaches after Superstorm Sandy.”

THE CURTAIN DROPS Dear Editor, Hail to the Chief! Congratulations to Donald Trump, as President Elect and our 45th Commander in Chief. The long and arduous campaign has finally ended, and while there is still after-thought on the events that shaped his election, the truth be known, the results are now carved in stone for 2016, and the dye is cast for the next two/and or four years. Analytically, questions must be put in perspective, in how so many could have been so wrong in their prognostications. Trump literally won on his own initiative, and determination. The RNC turned its back, on what was deemed a fantasy in the making, from someone who was going nowhere, and rejecting reality. Active members of the Congress refused to acknowledge his presence, and derided his attempts for competitive recognition. The broadcast and print industry brushed off his plans, as whimsical at best, portraying him as ego driven buffoon, who was looking to glorify himself.

The primary debates, quickly established him as a frontrunner, among sixteen other seekers, ranging from sitting or retired

politicians, along with a physician, and a CEO in the private sector. The more traction he gained with the populace, the more he was reviled. Even his primary victories in 42 states made little impression on his competitors. With friends like those in the GOP proper, Trump didn’t need any enemies from across the aisle. Democrats were in the catbird seat, choosing to sit back confidently, while their counterparts were on a road to self destruction within the ranks. Though there were a handful of allies from within the beltway, Trump scrambled for the nomination on his own.

The three debates with Hillary were not landmark advantages, for either candidate.

Answering salacious accusations from decades past seemed to occupy time that would have been better spent promoting programs and ideas in a new administration. Election Day was looked on as an exercise, to a Hillary landslide victory.

Endless polls, by the hour cluttered the airways, with pollsters holding informal gatherings of potential voters, to express their preferences. When voting day finally arrived, exit polling attempted to gain more insight. It was over for Trump, and everyone was sitting back, in front of their TV to enjoy an early night of returns, and the laudatory speeches of victory and concession. From out of nowhere the night

became historic as Trump swept through state by state. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Trump supporter, or his fiercest adversary, give credit where it is due. He made his election happen, and did it virtually on his own with only a handful of determined supporters, led by Giuliani, Conway, Gingrich, and of course his family. Face the facts on Hillary. There was simply too much baggage in her past, and too little vision spent on specific solutions to the matters which mean the most to Americans. Democrats were deprived of primary choices, and why didn’t Joe Biden run, and possibly win? Where was the depth of the party, for those who rejected Hillary? If she couldn’t beat Trump, who COULD she have defeated? Perhaps now, we will learn of why viable Democratic candidates were intimidated not to run. One thing seems to be assured. It’s finally over politically, for both the Clinton, and Bush families, and for that we can all give a sigh of welcome relief, for hopefully a brighter look to the future.

LEGALLY SPEAKING I recently read an article about a jury awarding millions of dollars to a woman who claimed her ovarian cancer was caused by daily use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene. When I was growing up, seeing talcum powder in the cabinet was as common as having band aids in the medicine cabinet or baking soda in the refrigerator. It was used by adults and on infants and most households probably had at least one container.

There have been studies supporting the conclusion that long-term, daily use of talcum powder may increase the risk of ovarian cancer, but the debate continues as to whether there is any connection. This was the second big verdict in a talcum powder case, and Johnson & Johnson, the defendant in the recent case, has vowed an appeal.

No man who witnessed the tragedies of the last war, no man who can imagine the unimaginable possibilities of the next war, can advocate war out of irritability or frustration or impatience.

But let no nation confuse our perseverance and patience with fear of war or unwillingness to meet our responsibilities.

We cannot save ourselves by abandoning those who are associated with us, or rejecting our responsibilities.

In the end, the only way to maintain the peace is to be prepared in the final extreme to fight for our country—and to mean it.

As a nation, we have little capacity for deception. We can convince friend and foe alike that we are in earnest about the defense of freedom only if we are in earnestand I can assure the world that we are.

This cemetery was first established 97 years ago. In this hill were first buried men who died in an earlier war, a savage war here in our own country. Ninety-seven years ago today, the men in Gray were retiring from Antietam, where thousands of

their comrades had fallen between dawn and dusk in one terrible day. And the men in Blue were moving towards Fredericksburg, where thousands would soon lie by a stone wall in heroic and sometimes miserable death.

It was a crucial moment in our Nation's history, but these memories, sad and proud, these quiet grounds, this Cemetery and others like it all around the world, remind us with pride of our obligation and our opportunity.

On this Veterans Day of 1961, on this day of remembrance, let us pray in the name of those who have fought in this country's wars, and most especially who have fought in the First World War and in the Second World War, that there will be no veterans of any further war—not because all shall have perished but because all shall have learned to live together in peace.

that were touted as helpful and safe but eventually were deemed dangerous and potentially life threatening. There was a chemical called phthalates that was commonly added to plastic products to make them soft. It was used in teething rings and rubber ducks, as well as shower curtains and nail polish. I shudder to think that I had these types of teething rings and would put them in the freezer to give my children when they were babies to alleviate their pain. It was banned after some studies showed serious, longterm side effects. Thalidomide was originally marketed as a sleeping aid but was eventually prescribed by some obstetricians to alleviate morning sickness. The unknown side effect at the time was an interference with a baby’s normal development that resulted in many being born with missing, shortened, or flipper-like limbs. While the drug still is used in the treatment of leprosy and some cancers, its use is strictly monitored.

My cabinets contain many antibacterial hand soaps, as they were touted as more effective in fighting germs and bacteria than regular soap. However, most of the chemicals used in antibacterial soap were just recently banned by the FDA in a final ruling last month.

Companies no longer will be able to market their products containing ingredients such as triclosan and triclocarban as they have not been deemed safe for long-term daily use. This ban does not apply to hospitals or food service settings. Fenphedra, commonly known as Fen Phen, was deemed a miracle drug in the battle to lose weight. Tragically, it caused pulmonary hypertension and heart valve abnormalities.

One of the most well-known products that was touted as safe – but we now know is not – was tobacco. In the early 20th Century, tobacco was provided to servicemen and marketed as alleviating stress during wartime. Tobacco use

became so common that it was even included in soldiers’ rations. After the Second World War, tobacco companies targeted woman with their marketing as a means to look sophisticated and lose weight. Unfortunately, we learned much later on that tobacco contains many ingredients known to cause cancer.

While the United States Food and Drug Administration is the government agency responsible for regulating food, dietary supplements, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, biologics, and blood products in the United States, there are some products that either are not regulated or may initially seem safe. As an attorney, we are asked to get involved after the injury occurs. While it obviously would be preferable if the injury had not occurred at all, anyone who thinks they might have been involved with a product that caused any type of ailment or illness should consult with an attorney immediately.

Executive Order Bans City Agencies from Inquiring about Job Applicants’ Salary History

By Forum Staff Mayor Bill de Blasio last week signed Executive Order 21 prohibiting City agencies from inquiring about the salary history of job applicants.

The Executive Order, which goes into effect in 30 days, dictates that prior to making a conditional offer of employment, City agencies cannot seek to obtain information regarding an applicant’s salary history either through direct questioning of an applicant or through searches of public records. An applicant’s salary history includes prior wage, salary, benefits or other compensation. The order allows for City agencies to inquire about previous salary only after making a conditional offer of employment that includes the salary for the job, and solely for the purpose of evaluating an applicant’s representations about their prior employment, such as degree of responsibility or breadth of role.

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services will provide training for Agency Personnel Officers on the appropriate manner in which to ask about the pay history of applicants who have received conditional offers, de Blasio said. Personnel Officers will train their Agency Human Resources staff.

According to the administration, women in the five boroughs continue to earn less than men and are more likely to live in poverty.

The income gaps are widest among women of color, older women, immigrants, and women without a high school degree. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the mean income for women in New York City was equivalent to just 80 percent of what men earned, a gap of $10,470. The report also showed that across the United States, women employed full-time lose a combined total of more than $840 billion each year due to the wage gap. Reports on the gender wage gap vary slightly across the board, but according to 2015 U.S Census Bureau data, women earn approximately 80 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts. The problem is even more evident for women of color, compared to what white males make: Black women make 64 cents to every white male dollar, while Latina women make 54 cents, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Borough Education Stakeholders Meet to Discuss Implementation of ‘Every Student Succeeds Act’

By Michael V. Cusenza Teachers, school administrators, elected officials, Community Education Council members, community board members, and other stakeholders recently attended a meeting to discuss how the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act can best be implemented in New York.

Borough President Melinda Katz addressed the Nov. 1 conference and indicated that she supports the law that gives states more flexibility in formulating educational policy than they had under the old federal No Child Left Behind Act. The bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act was signed by President Barack Obama on Dec. 10, 2015. The measure, according to the Obama administration, reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (the United States’ national education law) and “builds on key areas of progress in recent years.”

by President Lyndon Johnson, who believed that “full educational opportunity” should be “our first national goal.”ESEA offered new grants to districts serving low-income students, federal grants for textbooks and library books, funding for special education centers, and scholarships for low-income college students. The law was scheduled for revision in 2007, and, over time, NCLB’s

In 2010, the administration said it set out to create a better law that focused on fully preparing all students for success in college and careers.

• Maintains an expectation that there will be accountability and action to effect positive change in our lowest-performing schools, where groups of students are not making progress, and where graduation rates are low over extended periods of time.

The U.S. Department of Education is now working with states and districts to begin implementing the ESSA.

NYPD Sergeant Shot and Killed in Bronx

By Michael V. Cusenza A City Police sergeant was shot and killed last week in a wild Bronx firefight that left another sergeant injured and the perpetrator dead.

NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, 41, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head and chest last Friday afternoon after he and Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo exchanged fire with career criminal Manuel Rosales on Bronx River Avenue, cops said.

Kwo, 30, was shot in the leg, treated at Jacobi Medical Center and released. Rosales, 35, was shot and killed by a rookie officer.

“It is with tremendous anguish that I have to tell you that today an NYPD sergeant was shot and killed while doing his job – while trying to keep the people of New York City safe,” Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill said moments after the incident.

According to O’Neill, on Friday around 2:45 p.m. a woman called 911 and said that a man armed with a gun had broken into her apartment on Beach Avenue. That information was relayed over the department radio.

Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran, was a married father of two young boys.

As patrol units from Tuozzolo and Kwo’s 43rd Precinct were responding, the radio dispatcher advised them that the suspect had just fled the scene and was driving a red Jeep. Roughly seven minutes later, the suspect’s vehicle was seen at Noble Court and Bronx River Avenue by a marked patrol car, about a half-mile from the original Beach Avenue call.

As Tuozzolo and Kwo approached the vehicle, Rosales opened fire at them with a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun. Cops returned fire.

Both sergeants were rushed to Jacobi. Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran, was later pronounced dead.

An initial investigation revealed that Rosales is the estranged husband of a female occupant of the

apartment on Beach Avenue. Earlier that day, Rosales forcibly entered the apartment, armed with a gun.

Present at that time was his 29-yearold estranged wife, their 3-year-old son, another 13-year-old child, and a 50-year-old woman who was the original 911 caller, O’Neill said.

Tuozzolo is survived by his wife and two young boys.

Shoe-Wielding Woman Attacks Fellow Straphanger in Ozone Park Station

Cops this week were still searching for a woman wanted in connection with a bizarre assault involving footwear in an Ozone Park subway stop.

According to authorities, last Tuesday, Nov. 1, around 3 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was waiting on the northbound platform of the 88th Street and Boyd Avenue station when an older female took off her shoe and struck the younger woman on the head and left eye, and then fled the location in an unknown direction. The victim sustained a laceration to the left eye, cops said.

The suspect is described as a white woman, approximately 40 years old, 5-foot-7, 130 pounds, with brown eyes, brown-and-gray hair, and a medium complexion. She was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans and black shoes.

Understanding Food Allergies-Part One Food allergies or food intolerances affect nearly everyone at some point. When people have unpleasant reactions to food t is no uncommon for them to wonder if the reaction had something to do with what they had to eat.

One out of three people believe they have a food allergy because a family member has an allergy to a specific food. In reality though, only about 5% of children have clinically proven allergic reactions to foods.

The number is even less in teens and adults, where food allergies occur in only about 4% of the total population.

The difference between the clinically proven presence of food allergy and what people believe the problem to be is due mainly becasue of reactions brought on by what we commonly call a food intolerance.

We’ve all heard the term lactose intolerance and seen many products that deal with the condition on the shelves at the pharmacy or even in the dairy section of the supermarket.

It’s important for us to realize the difference between ntolerance and a true allergic reaction.

A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food that is triggered by the immune system. The immune system is not responsible for the symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms

can resemble those of a food allergy.

Being allergic to milk is very different from not being able to digest it properly due to lactose intolerance.

For the relatively small percentage of people who have true alergies to certain foods, identifying those allegies could mean the difference beteen life and death.

It is extremely important for people who have true food allergies to identify them and prevent allergic reactions to food because these reactions can cause devastating illness and, in some cases, be fatal.

An allergic reaction to food can affect the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, and, in the most serious cases, the cardiovascular system. Reactions can range from mild to severe, including the potentially life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. In the U.S., food allergy symptoms send someone to the emergency room every three minutes.

Mild symptoms may include one or more of the following: hives, Eczema,redness of the skin or around the eyes,i tchy mouth or ear canal,nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, nasal congestion or a runny nose, sneezing, slight dry cough, odd taste in mouth and uterine contractions.

Jury Convicts Man of Assault in Brutal Beating of Off-Duty Cop in Richmond Hill

By Forum Staff A Jamaica, Queens man has been convicted of assault in the early morning attack of an off-duty police officer, following a verbal dispute outside a nightclub in November 2013.

“A jury weighed all the evidence and convicted the defendant in the brutal beating of an off-duty police officer, who was so severely injured he could not resume work for approximately four months”, District Attorney Brown said. “The defendant punched, kicked and banged the victim’s head against the cement pavement - even after he’d lost consciousness.”

The defendant, Hayden Holder, 32, of 102 Avenue, was convicted of first-degree assault last week, following a two-weeklong trial. Sentencing is set for November 16. The defendant faces up to 25 years in prison.

who was off-duty at the time, were involved in a verbal dispute at approximately 4:00 a.m. outside of Club Maracas on Jamaica Avenue. The encounter included an exchange of words, but there was no physical violence at that time. Trial testimony, states that approximately 35 minutes later, as the victim waited in a food line at a latenight, walk-up restaurant window in front of 118-14 Liberty Avenue, the two men encountered each other again. This time, the defendant pursued Mr. Deen as he walked back towards his car, where his wife was waiting. Holder punched the victim repeatedly and knocked him to the ground, and continued the beating by kicking Mr. Deen in the head and even after being knocked unconscious, the defendant grabbed the victim by the head and slammed his head against the pavement. Mr. Deen was taken to a local hospital. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple facial fractures, injured his knee and had headaches and double vision for months after the beating.

Queens Library to Pay $1.5M in Galante Lawsuit Settlement

By Michael V. Cusenza The Queens Library and its former President and CEO, Thomas Galante, have agreed to settle the federal lawsuit he filed against the non-profit in November 2015 after he was forced out over questionable use of expense accounts, the Library confirmed on Wednesday.

The settlement amount is $1.5 million – approximately half of which is covered by insurance; $300,000 of the settlement is being paid to Galante. A stipulation of dismissal of the case was filed Monday evening in Brooklyn federal court.

“It’s in the best interest of this institution and the public to put our time and resources towards our future, rather than litigate this matter to conclusion,” said Queens Library President and CEO Dennis Walcott, who took the reins from interim President and CEO Bridget Quinn-Carey in March. “I look forward to con-

In November 2015, Galante filed a lawsuit seeking approximately $2.275 million in sev-

erance pay and approximately $7.2 million in other damages to contest his December 2014 termination for cause.

The 19-member Library Board of Trustees voted unani-

mously to ax Galante, 55, who pulled down $392,000 per year.

In July 2015, City Comptroller Scott Stringer released an audit and investigative report that painted a vivid picture of

a disingenuous and reckless Library under Galante.

According to Stringer, Galante and other Library executives spent more than $300,000 on prohibited items such as extravagant meals, alcohol, Apple TVs, smokeless ashtrays, airline upgrades, and tickets to a Maroon 5 concert and Disneyland, all while claiming that the Library was running a deficit.

Galante has said he believes ulterior motives were behind his termination.

“After giving 27 years of my life to the Queens Library and raising millions of dollars to make it better, the political winds changed overnight and my name was dragged through the mud,” he told the New York Post after filing the lawsuit.

Man Wanted in Queens Boulevard Punch Homicide Surrenders to Police scene, cops said.

EMS responded to the scene and rushed Gorman to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip; he was later transferred to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead the following day.

The City Medical Examiner ruled Gorman’s death a homicide.

According to published reports, Smith allegedly hit Gorman after he bumped into Makarova. Smith later allegedly bragged about the assault on social media.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Makarova had not been charged. Smith’s next court date has been scheduled for Nov. 22.

Mathew Smith, 42, on Monday turned himself in at the 75th Precinct stationhouse in East New York. Court records show that he was arraigned on Tuesday in Queens on a single count of misdemeanor assault with intent to cause physical injury. Bail has been set at $10,000 cash or bond.

According to investigators, around midnight on Sunday, June 26, Smith approached Patrick Gorman, 64, at the southeast corner of Main Street and Queens Boulevard and struck him “in the head with a closed fist, causing [Gorman] to fall to the ground.” Smith and girlfriend Elena Makarova, 39, then calmly fled the

The event, held last Tuesday evening at the Brewery-Keenan Heisser American Legion Post 1815 on Cooper Avenue, featured presentations by NYPD SHIELD (the City Police Department’s umbrella program for a series of current and future NYPD initiatives that pertain to private-sector security and counterterrorism) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

New App Helps Caretakers Quickly Report Inappropriate Behavior in City Parks, Playgrounds

By Michael V. Cusenza Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Flushing) recently launched a new smartphone application aimed at helping parents and caregivers report inappropriate and/or illegal behavior at playgrounds and parks across the five boroughs.

Kim said ParentPatrol empowers parents and caregivers; and, unlike the City’s 311 system, the app “is hyper-localized and engages all community stakeholders, including elected officials and advocates, to combat unwanted behavior near our chil-

dren.”

Crime in city parks and recreational facilities has recently become an urgent issue, with violent offenses jumping 25 percent over the past year, according to an October report compiled by NYC Park Advocates.

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park leads all city green spaces with 65 total crimes reported over the past year. Flushing Meadows finds itself at the top of several dubious lists, according to the NYCPA analysis: the 897-acre park has clocked the most felony assaults, robberies, burglaries, and car thefts of all Big Apple parks July 1, 2015 to

June 30, 2016.

“If developed and utilized properly, this could be an important quality-of-life tool for parents in city parks,” said NYCPA President Geoffrey Croft. “Unfortunately parents encounter situations daily in these spaces that impact public safety: from drug sales, public intoxication, and vandalism, to unauthorized people who shouldn’t be in playgrounds without kids. This app could help track hot spots in order to direct more resources to address these issues.”

Ave Maria Catholic Academy: A look inside

By Forum Staff Students at the Ave Maria Catholic Academy have been busy enjoying a host of diverse activities this year starting with the celebration of their 2nd Annual Spirit Day event held on May 12th.

The proceeds from the event went towards a Back to School Circus Extravaganza. A fun filled event which had The National Circus Project visit the school for two days.

In addition to a great show put on by two talented circus performers, students got to try their hands at juggling, plate spinning, balancing, devil sticks and more! A great time was had by everyone!

Later on in the year, the students participated in Pink/White Dress Down on Oct 14.

Students tied pink ribbons on the school fence to show support and the proceeds were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

In conjunction the school also sponsored a "Pink Bingo" with a portion of the proceeds also being donated to breast cancer research.

Finally, in recognition of Fire Prevention Safety Week, Firefighter Koslowski, paid a visit to the school, in his gear. He spent time with the younger grades talking with them about what to do in case of a fire.
