Watching their meds is up to you It's not uncommon for people to come into the pharmacy and ask questions about giving their pets over the counter people medications.

Of course no one wants to see their beloved animal in pain, but we also need to be very mindful that giving our animals NSAIDs or acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands, which are not NSAIDs) straight from our medicine cabinets may not be safe for dogs or cats, or that a dose that is safe for people may not be safe for pets.

Some over-the-counter (OTC) human pain relievers can be toxic, or even deadly, in pets.

So please never give your animal something you take unless speaking with your vet first.

Similarly, pet owners shouldn't assume that a medicine good for one animal is necessarily safe for another.

Rule number 1--Communication with your veterinarian is essential.

Before giving your animal an NSAID: --Make sure you know what the medication is being prescribed for, how much to give and how long to give it.

--Discuss possible side effects and symptoms, especially those that require an immediate call to the vet.

--Tell your veterinarian if the pet has a history

of gastrointestinal problems, such as stomach ulcers, or surgery on the stomach or intestines.

--Tell your veterinarian if your pet is on any other medications or supplements.

If your pet is on medication, make sure you ask your vet these questions: -Why is my pet on this medication and how long do I need to give it?

-How do I give the medication to my pet?

Should it be given with food?

-How often should the medication be given and how much should I give each time? If it is a liquid, should I shake it first?

-How do I store the medication?

-What should I do if my pet vomits or spits out the medication?

-If I forget to give the medication, should I give it as soon as I remember?

-What if I accidently give too much?

-Should I finish all of the medication?

-Could this medication interact with others?

-What reactions should I watch for?

-When do we comeback?

- Will you be calling me to check on my pet’s progress, or should I call you?

Murky Waters: AG’s Sandy Report Rips National Flood Insurance Program and its Administration

Cusenza A former project manager for a Long Island-based engineering firm recently admitted to altering an engineering report prepared in connection with the assessment of structural damage of residential properties resulting from Superstorm Sandy, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced.

Matthew Pappalardo, 39, pleaded guilty last week to unauthorized practice of engineering, a Class E felony. Pappalardo is expected to be sentenced on March 1 to three years’ probation and a $10,000 fine.

Pappalardo’s former employer, HiRise Engineering, P.C., also pleaded guilty to criminal solicitation in the fifth degree, a violation, agreed to be permanently banned from receiving contracts and providing services under the National Flood Insurance Program, and paid $225,000 in costs of prosecution.

According to statements made by prosecutors at arraignment on the August 2016 indictment, after Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, HiRise was contracted to perform structural engineering assessments for properties covered under the National Flood Insurance Program. HiRise, in turn, retained numerous licensed professional engineers to perform house inspections and prepare engineering reports.

According to Schneiderman’s Office, the original reports authored by the on-theground, subcontracted professional engineers were altered by employees of HiRise, under the direction of Pappalardo. Pappalardo and the other HiRise employees who made the alterations to the original reports did not personally inspect the damaged buildings and were not licensed to practice engineering in New York. The altered reports were then submitted by HiRise, and ultimately provided to the adjusting firms, without the consent or approval of the underlying professional engineers. “Fraudulently altering engineering reports undermines the integrity of the entire NFIP claims process, which homeowners and families rely upon in a time of crisis,” Schneiderman said. “My office is committed to protecting homeowners and ensuring that their insurance claims are handled accurately and fairly. Today’s conviction also re-emphasizes the need for FEMA to implement the reforms to the National Flood In-

surance Program identified by my office, so that when the next major storm hits, families can be confident that their claims are being handled professionally and reliably.”

Those NFIP reforms are outlined in the AG’s report, “Murky Waters: Increasing Transparency and Accountability in the National Flood Insurance Program, Findings and Recommendations in the Wake of Superstorm Sandy,” and they include: • Increase the transparency and clarify the scope of flood insurance coverage and any applicable exclusions, to provide consumers with a better understanding of what is and is not covered under their flood policy, through the creation of a plain language disclosure sheet; • Provide policyholders with all documents created during the course of the flood claim administration process and ultimately relied upon in determining payment or denial of a flood claim, including all final adjuster and engineering reports, as a matter of course; • Implement a national certification process for all engineers retained to provide structural damage assessments in the wake of a flood event; and • Ensure the transparency of fees paid to engineering experts by implementing a standardized fee schedule for all engineering services.

Calculating Crooks set up Good Samaritan in Vicious South Ozone Park Slash-and-Grab

By Michael V. Cusenza Police recently reached out to the public for help in identifying three suspects wanted in connection with a particularly cold-blooded, violent robbery last month in South Ozone Park.

According to investigators, on Thursday, Dec. 15, around 7:35 p.m., the three suspects were lingering near their black Hyundai – parked in the vicinity of Rockaway Boulevard and 131st Street with its hood ajar – acting “as if their car battery was dead.”

The victim, a 58-year-old man, told cops that after seeing one of the three individuals holding jumper cables he decided to stop and attempt to help what appeared to him to be stranded motorists.

Hero Cop Hailed as ‘Everything that we Aspire to be as a People and a City Embodied in One Man’

By Michael V. Cusenza Thousands of New Yorkers—Uniformed Members of the Service and the civilians they swore an oath to protect—convened at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Friday to pay their last respects to the Finest of New York’s Finest: Det. Steven McDonald.

McDonald died on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island, four days after suffering a massive heart attack at his home in Malverne. He was 59.

“Today there is a unity in our city, a unity of sorrow at the passing of this great man, but also a unity of celebration of a man who was with us on this Earth who had lived a life so well. Here among us, a living example – everything that we aspire to be as a people and a city embodied in one man: Steven McDonald,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We feel pain, and we feel joy that we knew him. We learn from him. We learn the right way to live from him. Directly, he touched thousands of lives – tens of thousands – but in a greater way millions were moved by his example because he became the greatest embodiment of what it means to be a member of the NYPD. He was synonymous with all that is great about our Police Depart-

McDonald was appointed to the NYPD on July 16, 1984. He was shot three times and critically injured while patrolling Central Park in 1986, just four days shy of his second anniversary as a police officer.

On Friday, Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill said he first met McDonald when he was the commanding officer of the Central Park Precinct. He came to the precinct to address roll call – something McDonald did at commands

across every borough over the past 30 years – and O’Neill said that McDonald told rookies and veterans alike to always think about police-officer safety, and to always treat everyone they encountered with the same level of respect and kindness they’d afford their own closest friends.

“That’s what had such an impact on me,” O’Neill recalled.

The commissioner went on to declare McDonald “the strongest person” he knew.

“And what we can learn from Steven’s life is this: The cycle of violence that plagues so many lives today can become overcome only by breaking down the walls that separate people,” O’Neill said.

“The best tools for doing this, Steven taught us, are love, respect, and forgiveness.”

O’Neill closed out his remarks last Friday with weighty words about an officer’s shield and what it means to every member of the NYPD. “If nothing else, Steven wanted people to know that police officers take their job seriously because policing is a profession, it’s also a vocation,” he noted. “And Steven wanted people to know that if duty calls for it, police officers will give you everything.”

Borough Burglars Charged with Stealing Building Materials from Four Home Depot Stores

By Forum Staff Do not stop. Do not pass the cash register. Get out of Home Depot Free. That’s the game two Queens residents have been playing in Home Depot stores in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Two men have been arrested and charged with burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and other crimes after police say, they stole merchandise from Home Depot. Armando Diaz, 43, of 23rd Avenue in College Point, and Kevin Marmolejo, 21, of 59th Road in Maspeth allegedly filled their orange carts with merchandise and then walking out without paying.

Diaz, who works in the construction industry, is charged with taking building materials worth more than $14,000 from four stores between August 17, 2016, and January 10, 2017.

According to District Attorney Brown, “The defendants in this case are accused of going from store to store with the intent of stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. The men are accused of going on shopping sprees and then exiting the stores without stopping at the cashier to pay. One of the defendants, when apprehended, was allegedly in possession of fake twenty dollar bills. This kind of thievery will not be tolerated.” Both men have been arraigned on a criminal complaint charging them with third-degree burglary, third- and fourth-degree grand larceny, third and fourth-degree

Cops eventually caught up to Diaz and Marmolejo at 130th Street and 23rd Avenue in College Point, where they allegedly recovered more than $6,000 worth of stolen Home Depot merchandise from the suspects’ vehicle.

criminal possession of stolen property and fifth-degree, were ordered back to court on January 25.

The authorities investigation of the “shopping spree” includes surveillance footage of Diaz and an un-apprehended individual seen entering the Home Depot store in Flushing, Queens, around 7 a.m. on August 17, 2016. About 40 minutes later, they are alleged to have walked out of the store by passing the cashier with a cart filled with 5-gallon drums of paint, sheets of plexiglass, bifold doors and other items worth just under $4,000.

hended individual, again on video surveillance, entering the East Elmhurst Home Depot store at 7:15 a.m. on October 26, 2016.

About 40 minutes later, the two walked out with a cart filled with light fixtures, more paint, plexiglass and doors without paying.

These items were valued at about $4,500.

According to criminal complaints, both Diaz and Marmolejo were observed leaving a Queens location and driving to the Home Depot located on Jericho Turnpike in Nassau County, Long Island, on January 10, 2017. They allegedly entered the store at 6 a.m. and left approximately 6:20 with a cart filled with RockSolid clear epoxy, a Tyvek

house wrap, primer sealer, vinyl flooring, garbage bags and other merchandise valued at more than $3,500. After leaving the store they allegedly then drove to the Deer Park Home Depot on Commack Road in Suffolk County, where they filled a cart with recessed lighting, a Moen faucet fixture, ceiling medallion, a colored bulb and more, totaling around $2,500.

The defendants were stopped by police at 130th Street and 23rd Avenue where investigators recovered more than $6,000 worth of stolen Home Depot merchandise. Marmolejo also allegedly had $460 in counterfeit twenty dollar bills in his pocket. After the arrests were made, Marmolejo allegedly stated to police that the scheme was for him to stop near the cashier with the cart of building materials as Diaz spoke to a distracted employee at the self-checkout registers.

Marmolejo would only exit after hearing the Spanish word “salga”––to go or to leave–– from Diaz.

An amendment to the Criminal Procedure Law, which went into affect in November 2016, permits prosecution for crimes allegedly committed in another contiguous county if the scheme of organized retail theft crimes are committed by two or more people.

Diaz, currently held on $100,000 bail, could face up to seven years in prison.

The bail for Marmolejo, who is additionally charged with first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, was set at $50,000 and he faces up to 15 years in prison.

‘Times Up’ for 10 Suspects Charged in Heroin Trafficking Ring

Ten men, including three borough residents, have been indicted for their alleged roles in a prolific heroin distribution ring operating in Queens, Brooklyn, and surrounding areas in New York, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and City Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill recently announced.

The network allegedly trafficked heroin cut with ketamine – an animal tranquilizer— as well as cocaine, on a daily basis to various parts of the five boroughs.

According to Schneiderman, over the course of the investigation, which was led by the Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force and the NYPD Brooklyn North Gang Squad, authorities seized more than 600 glassines of controlled substances, including heroin and ketamine. Dubbed “Operation Times Up” after investigators recovered glassines that were proprietarily branded with the stamp “Times Up.” These stamps, according to investigators, were the calling card of Christopher Quinones, the leader of the multi-county criminal organization. The branding signaled to buyers that these drugs originated from him.

“Heroin is killing Americans at an alarming rate. The ten arrests made this morning on heroin-related charges in New York City is the precision policing that saves lives,” O’Neill said. “I want to thank the NYPD de-

tectives and the investigators from the Attorney General’s Office for their work that led to today’s arrests.”

According to authorities, the 89-count indictment, unsealed last Wednesday in court, charged three suspects – borough residents Raphael Rodriguez and Saul Drullard, and Staten Island’s Melvin Nieves – with criminal sale of a controlled substance in the second

degree, a class A-II felony, which carries a mandatory sentencing range of 3 to 10 years in state prison.

Additionally, all defendants, including Pablo Rodriguez of Queens, were charged with counts of criminal sale and criminal possession of a controlled substance, class B felonies, which carries a mandatory sentencing range of 1 to 9 years in state prison; and with conspiracy in the second degree, also a class B felony.

Schneiderman noted that the central target in the conspiracy, Christopher Quinones, is facing 40 separate charges for criminal sale and criminal possession of a controlled substance charges.

“Dangerous drug trafficking rings like what we have allegedly uncovered during Operation Times Up threaten the safety and stability of our communities. We won’t hesitate to crackdown and prosecute drug kingpins to the fullest extent of the law when they fuel the vicious cycle of addiction across New York State,” the attorney general said.

In October, Schneiderman and State Police Superintendant George Beach announced the indictment of 14 people, including a Richmond Hill man, for their roles in an alleged heroin and cocaine trafficking ring that spanned New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Richmond Hill Educator Gets Prison Term for Sending Sexually Explicit Material to 15-Year-Old Student

By Forum Staff A Richmond Hill High School coach and former attendance teacher convicted for attempted use of a child in a sexual performance and other charges has been sentenced to two to six years in prison.

Luis Rodriguez, 45, of Freeport, Long Island engaged in sexually explicit communications with a fifteen-year-old student between October 2014 and November 2014.

“The defendant was a trusted coach and teacher. He was someone whom parents believed their children would be safe with.

But this defendant violated that trust. This coach used an extracurricular school activity to prey on this young victim. This case should serve as a clear and unmistakable warning that law enforcement will arrest and prosecute sexual predators. This defendant

is now going to prison as punishment for his actions and to protect society,” said DA Richard Brown.

Rodriguez was convicted at trial in December 2016 of attempted use of a child in a sexual performance, first degree disseminating indecent material to minors and endangering the welfare of a child.

Trial testimony says that at various times between October 1, 2014, and November 7, 2014, Rodriguez texted or used the FaceTime video chat feature on a cell phone to send sexually explicit messages to a 15-yearold female student.

District Attorney Brown said Rodriguez was “a trusted coach and teacher” at Richmond Hill High School.

Mom Charged with Murder in Tot’s Strangulation Death

By Forum Staff Authorities held bedside arraignment this week for the Elmhurst mother charged with the strangulation death of her 15-month old daughter just weeks ago.

“This is truly a very sad case in which a fifteen-month-old baby lost her life allegedly at the hands of her own mother – the woman who was supposed to nurture and care for her.

If the allegations prove true, the defendant will have to live the rest of her life knowing that her actions and hers alone were responsible for the death of her child.”

Shangbo Xiangshengjie (a/k/aXiangshengjie Shangbo), 33, has been hospitalized at Elmhurst Hospital Center

of second-degree murder and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Xiangshengjie faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted, and was held without bail and to return to court on February 8, 2017.

According to court documents, Xiangshengjie called 911 on January 3, 2017, and reported that she had murdered her 15-monthold daughter, Sanggye Lhakyi, inside of their third-floor apartment earlier in the day. Queens Car Dealer Facing Felony Charges for Failing to Report $3.85M in Sales Tax

By Forum Staff The NYS Dept of Taxation and Finance in conjunction with the Queens DA’s office have charged and arrested the owner of three used car dealerships operating in Woodside and Jamaica, Queens, with stealing a total of more than $332,160 in New York State/New York City sales taxes by failing to report car sales totaling more than $3.8 million between 2010 and 2015.

Consumers who pay sales tax are expecting that money to go to the public treasury instead of being pocketed by business owners according to Queens DA Richard Brown. “ These types of paper crimes make every New Yorker a victim by cheating the government and the public out of money that is necessary to maintain services and infrastructure.”

The defendant was identified as Mamdoh Eltouby, 65, of Melville, Long Island.

He is the owner of Planet Motor Cars, Inc., and Hillside Motors, LLC, both of which operate at 161-10 Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, and New York Motor Group, LLC, which operates at 60-20 Northern Boulevard in Woodside.

Eltouby was arraigned on three criminal complaints that variously charge him and his companies with the crimes of second and third-degree grand larceny, firstdegree falsifying business records and firstdegree offering a false instrument for filing.

Released on his own recognizance, he is scheduled to next appear in court on April 7, 2017, and will face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. In the case of a corporation, a felony is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 or double the amount of the illegal gain.

After Meryl Streep rightfully criticized him for disgracefully imitating a disabled reporter, the future President of the United States tweeted "Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood".

This man is a petulant child. And his spokeswoman, Kellyanne Conway actually defended Trump by criticizing reporters, saying(she actually said this) "you always want to go by what's come out of his mouth"! Yes, Ms. Conway is unaware that in the real world a person actually gets judged by what comes out of their mouth. That's why she will be forever judged as a person who has sold her soul to the devil. Trump also criticized CNN for reporting what he says is "fake news", as a result this childish future president refused to take a question from a CNN reporter. I guess he wants them to spend more time on "real" stories like "Obama is Kenyan", "Ted Cruz's dad killed JFK" and "Global Warming is a Chinese hoax"! When asked about ties between Trump's campaign and Russia, FBI director James Comey said "I would never comment on investigations, whether we have one or not, in an open forum like this, so I can't answer one way or another". Really? I guess it was ok to announce in October that the FBI was looking at more emails as part of its "ONGOING" investigation of Hillary Clinton. I wonder how Comey feels now that HE Is under investigation. Well America, eight years ago, under Obama's leadership, America reversed a great recession, rebooted the auto industry, and unleashed the longest stretch of job creation in our history. We also opened up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot, took out the mastermind of 9-11, achieved marriage equality and secured health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens(something Trump/GOP are against). Wages, incomes, home values and retirement accounts are all rising again. Poverty is falling again. The wealthy are paying a fair share of taxes(for now). Even as the stock market shatters records, the unemployment rate is near a 10-year low. The uninsured rate has never, ever been lower. But.... Here comes Donnie! He is completely reckless. A few days ago, he tweeted that Toyota would have to build their Corolla's in a US plant or pay a big border tax. His actions caused severe consequences for Toyota. The company stock plummeted and Toyota lost $1.2 billion in value just five minutes after Trump's tweet. And that just shows you how powerful Trump has become, because before being elected president he was only able to bankrupt his own companies. However, Trump is right about one thing. And that's the terrible trades America has been involved in lately.

INNAUGURATION FALLOUT Dear Editor, Since the Jill Stein allegations of voter tampering, and fraud in the election process, there has been a never ending purge against the now certified results, of the Donald Trump victory in November. It was VP Joe Biden himself, who upon his official certification declaration in the Senate, proclaimed of the election-- “It’s over!” Still the allegations of impropriety and illegitimacy persist, to those who cannot come to terms, with any substantive evidence to the contrary. Every avenue of argument, to disenfranchise the 2016 results has been debunked, and it is time to move on. America is not a single Province, it is a Republic made up of 50 individual, and independent states, which have equal rights and benefits under that law. As such, the theory of the overall popular vote, being the determining factor, to the election results of any given candidate, cannot be applicable, when comparing the size and density of each individual state. The framers of our constitution realized that equal representation could not be achieved, when com-

paring the populace total of New York with Delaware. New York would always win out, in any confrontation. That very situation was evident, in the 2016 election, when a surplus number of three million more votes were cast for Hillary Clinton in New York and California alone. The vote totals in both of these states was overwhelming, but there was 48 other states, also in the mix tally. The equally large states, of Alaska, Montana, Maine, and the Dakotas are some of those who share the area size of New York and California, but have far less, in the number of inhabitants.

Except for Maine, all produced their plurality vote count for the Republicans. The proportion of votes allotted to each state is the same, in this delicate balance, so that one cannot pour seventeen ounces into a sixteen ounce container, or stuff five pounds of feathers into a four pound bag. The Electoral College provides each state with that equal representation. Trump won the plurality number in 32 states, regardless of size or population. The college is not meant as a denial of counted votes, but as a total scale to evaluate the preference of each state. The popular vote count may look to be the fairest, but it was not the intention to have two states, by virtue of population size, dictate and cancel the will of the remaining 48. The Electoral College achieves that. Democratic Congressman, John Lewis, of Georgia has been long admired, in the service to his country, both as a leader in the Civil Rights struggle that began in the 60’s, to his ongoing efforts for equality as a member of Congress. It is therefore sad, to have heard him disavow the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President, and being illegitimate.

John Lewis is a taller man than his words in

this instance. It is the very tone of this statement, which energized the marches and rallying cries of MLK during the sixties, which provided the future legislation that now characterizes America in the twenty first century. Yes, there is much left on the plate, to be addressed in this Congress, and beyond, regarding the equating of rights for all Americans, but he has never before lead from the rear, and this is not the time to taint the well fought image, established for over 60 years. The very challenge of this particular charge of illegitimacy on the President-elect, without a known proven fact, to substantiate it, flies in the face of all John Lewis fought, for all his life. Bringing America together, as one people was his platform then, and there is no reason to deviate from that course now. Like him or hate him, Donald Trump IS the 45th President of the United States, and to say Congressman Lewis doesn’t accept the edict of this election, and that he would neither attend the inauguration, as he has mostly done previously, and would further, not work with the new President on behalf of his state, or extend an invitation to the Commander in Chief, to visit his district is not the John Lewis that I have come to respect and admire. Hopefully, the adrenalin of leadership will suddenly prevail once again for him, in these final hours before January 20, and that his spirit of commitment will rise above politics, while motivating others, to join him in solidarity, for this nonpartisan transfer of leadership, as one nation under God!!

Mayor Extols Administration’s Affordable Housing Record

By Forum Staff The City financed more affordable housing in 2016 than in any time in the past 25 years, Mayor Bill de Blasio noted last week as he detailed “major progress” in his Housing New York plan.

Unveiled in 2014, Housing New York calls for the creation and preservation of 200,000 affordable units across the five boroughs over the next 10 years. Last Thursday, de Blasio said that since 2014 his team has extended affordability “for decades to come” at 41,600 homes and spurred construction of 20,800 new affordable apartments.

“This is about saving a mixed-income New York, and so we’ve held nothing back,” said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen.

“We doubled the housing capital budget.

We rewrote every term sheet to get more for the public in every housing project. We passed the biggest overhaul of city zoning in 50 years. And it is making a difference.”

According to the administration, new units financed under Housing New York are starting to be available to come online, and families are starting to move into those homes. Nearly 10,000 newly constructed affordable homes have been made available to families in NYC since 2014, and de Blasio estimates that another 3,500 new City-financed homes will be ready for

“If you are worried about paying your rent, we are fighting for you every day. No matter how much it changes, this is still your city. It must be a place for everyone, or it won’t work for anyone. According to the administration, some signs of Housing New York progress in 2016 included: More senior housing: New programs, including the Senior Affordable Rental Apartments, have resulted in the construction and preservation of 1,166 affordable apartments for the growing senior popula-

tion. This brings the total number of senior affordable apartments financed to date to more than 4,000.

More apartments for the very lowestincome families: The federal government has historically provided housing support to the poorest households, while the City supported low-income working households. With Washington cutting back, the City established the Extremely Low and Low Income Affordability program. In 2016, 19 percent of the homes financed were for New Yorkers making less than $19,050, or $24,500 for a family of three.

Approximately 4,200 homes for extremely-low income families were financed last year, bringing the three-year total to 8,877.

New Rules for growth: Implemented the strongest Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program in the nation that requires developers to create permanently affordable housing as a condition of development in areas rezoned for growth. MIH is responsible for over 4,500 affordable housing units, 1,500 of which will be permanently affordable, de Blasio said.

Stable housing for the formerly homeless: The City indicated that it financed 2,546 apartments for the formerly homeless in 2016, bringing the HNY total to 5,160.

Easier Access: Introduced new affordable housing lottery rules to make it simpler and fairer to apply. The changes prohibit owners from rejecting an applicant solely on the basis of credit history or housing court history; promote a streamlined interview process to reduce applicant no-shows; offer greater language access and accessibility for people with disabilities at all stages of the application process; consistency in how developers and marketing agents communicate with applicants; increased privacy protections; and increased transparency of the appeal process.

As Trump Takes Office, Stringer Notes how ‘Immigrant Population Helps Power NYC Economy’

By Forum Staff Immigrants comprise nearly half of the city’s workforce, with virtually every industry now relying on workers who were born abroad, according to a new analysis by City Comptroller Scott Stringer that also indicated that immigrants now account for roughly half of all workers in the Big Apple’s “core sectors, including technology, finance, entertainment, and medicine.”

The comptroller released “Our Immigrant Population Helps Power NYC Economy” a little more than a week before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

“We have not just a moral imperative to be true to our values and stand up to antiimmigrant policies, but an economic imperative as well. The contributions that immigrants make to our economy are enormous,” Stringer said. “Religious bans, threats of mass deportations, registries—all are antithetical to our legacy as New Yorkers and Americans. We hope this data shows the extraordinary impact immigrants make in our City, and we hope it demonstrates why supporting New Yorkers, no matter where they’re from, is the right thing to do for our economy.”

According to the analysis’s data: • The city has 3.3 million immi-

grants from more than 150 countries, making up 46 percent of NYC’s employed population and almost 40 percent of the city’s total population.

• With more than $100 billion in earned income, immigrants make 32 percent of total earnings in the five boroughs.

• More than 83,000 city business owners are immigrants, as well as 54 percent of all self-employed New Yorkers.

• In NYC, immigrants are employed at virtually the same rate as U.S.-born residents – at 71 percent and 68 percent, respectively.

• Every year, immigrant New York

families pay an estimated $8 billion in City and State personal income taxes, and approximately $2 billion in City property taxes.

• Immigrants are homeowners: 46 percent, or 451,000, of the City’s 991,000 homeowners are foreign-born.

• Roughly half of all workers in core city sectors, including technology (47 percent), financial analysis (44 percent), entertainment (54 percent), and medical (50 percent) are foreign-born, Stringer noted.

• Between the 1990s and 2000s, the number of immigrants with a graduate degree has jumped by more than 60 percent.

Since the 1980s, the number of immigrants coming to NYC with a graduate degree has more than doubled.

“New York City is an international hub – and our economy relies on a worldwide talent pool. When immigrants are threatened, when their ability to live, work, and raise their families is compromised – our entire City pays a costly price. We must all keep standing up and speaking out, because no matter how long your family has been here, immigrants must be welcome in New York City,” Stringer said.

In August, Trump delivered a detailed immigration policy address at a campaign stop in Arizona.

“If we are going to make our immigration system work, then we have to be prepared to talk honestly and without fear about these important and sensitive issues,” Trump said. “For instance, we have to listen to the concerns that working people have over the record pace of immigration and its impact on their jobs, wages, housing, schools, tax bills, and living conditions. We also have to be honest about the fact that not everyone who seeks to join our country will be able to successfully assimilate. It is our right as a sovereign nation to choose immigrants that we think are the likeliest to thrive and flourish here.”

Borough President Accepting Applications to Serve on Community Boards

By Forum Staff Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is now accepting applications from “qualified and community-minded individuals” who want to serve on one of the World’s Borough’s community boards, the BP’s Office announced last Thursday.

There are 14 community boards in Queens and a total of 59 citywide, Katz noted, with each panel having up to 50 unsalaried members and each member serving two-year terms. All Queens community board members are appointed by the borough president, with half of her appointees nominated by the City Councilmembers for the respective community board districts.

Community boards, Katz said, play an important advisory role in considering land-use and zoning matters, and contribute to public dialogue by holding hearings and issuing recommendations about the city budget, municipal service delivery, and many other matters that impact their communities.

“Queens is a borough of families, and our borough’s community boards help our families live better lives by addressing important quality-of-life issues,” Katz added. “To serve on a com-

City Launches Initiative to Increase Mentoring Opportunities for NYC High School Students

By Forum Staff The City recently marked National Mentoring Month by launching the NYC Youth Mentoring Initiative to increase mentoring opportunities for high school youth across the five boroughs.

According to Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC Chief Service Officer Paula Garvin, the initiative aims to establish mentoring programs in 400 City high schools by 2022, annually engaging 14,000 New Yorkers as volunteer mentors to 40,000 high school students. According to the administration, the YMI will support the City’s Equity and Excellence plan to achieve 80 percent high school graduation and two-thirds collegereadiness rates by 2026.

“New Yorkers know our greatest strength is our people, so we must work together to invest in our future,” de Blasio said. “The NYC Youth Mentoring Initiative is about reaching more high school youth across the city with positive mentoring relationships that can shape the path to their future and ours. I want to thank the many committed partners involved in this multisector collaboration, as well as the thousands of New Yorkers who already mentor young people in our City. I ask that you inspire someone else in your life to visit nyc.gov/service and become a personal champion to a young person in their community.”

The administration marked National Mentoring Month by announcing the NYC Youth Mentoring Initiative.

According to the City, the NYC Youth Mentoring Initiative is a collaborative effort by NYC Service, the Department of Education, Department of Youth & Community Development, Center for Youth Employment, the Young Men’s Initiative and community-based mentoring organizations across the five boroughs. As a proven youth development strategy which contributes to positive decision making, education achievements and successful career and college choices, mentoring will be encouraged among more City high school youth while also encouraging

more New Yorkers to step up as mentors to these students. From the current baseline of approximately 20,000 high school mentees and 9,000 volunteer mentors, the administration has pledged that the Youth Mentoring Initiative will double the number of mentees and increase the number of volunteer mentors by 55 percent over the next five years.

According to the administration, the growth from 20,000 to 40,000 high school mentees will be driven by the following: • Established mentoring programs in at least 400 high schools through the

expansion of current community-based organization mentoring programs, launch of new high school mentoring programs

by CBOs, and expansion of College/Career Awareness mentoring as well as “one day programs” for a total of 33,000 high school mentees.

• Expansion of embedded mentoring programs in DYCD workforce development programs for a total of 3,000 high school mentees.

• Expansion of CBO programs at CBO centers to 6,000 high school mentees.

The growth from 9,000 volunteer mentors to 14,000 will be driven by campaigns to reach and engage the following: • Individual New Yorkers through groups, associations, colleges/universities and faith-based organizations with a neighborhood focus.

• Corporations and small businesses.

• City employees.

The City has indicated that the initiative will both expand existing mentoring programs and focus on launching new programs in Young Men’s Initiative priority communities, including South Jamaica, East Harlem, South Bronx, Brownsville, East New York, and Staten Island’s North Shore.
