ASHINGTON — President Obama will ignore angry protests from Republicans and announce as soon as next week a broad overhaul of the nation’s immigration enforcement system that will protect up to five million undocumented immigrants from the threat of deportation and provide many of them with work permits, according to administration officials who have direct knowledge of the plan.

Asserting his authority as president to

enforce the nation’s laws with discretion, Mr. Obama intends to order changes that will significantly refocus the activities of the government’s 12,000 immigration agents. One key piece of the order, officials said, will allow many parents of children who are American citizens or legal residents to obtain legal work documents and no longer worry about being discovered, separated from their families and sent away.

That part of Mr. Obama’s plan alone could affect as many as 3.3 million people

who have been living in the United States illegally for at least five years, according to an analysis by the Migration Policy Institute, an immigration research organization in Washington. But the White House is also considering a stricter policy that would limit the benefits to people who have lived in the country for at least 10 years, or about 2.5 million people.

million or more if they are included in the final plan that the president announces.

Mr. Obama’s actions will also expand opportunities for immigrants who have hightech skills, shift extra security resources to the nation’s southern border, revamp a controversial immigration enforcement program called Secure Communities, and provide clearer guidance to the agencies that enforce immigration laws about who should be a low priority for deportation, especially those with strong family ties and no serious criminal history.

A new enforcement memorandum, which will direct the actions of Border Patrol agents and judges at the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and other federal law enforcement and judicial agencies, will make clear that deportations should still proceed for convicted criminals, foreigners who pose national security risks and recent border crossers, officials said.

White House officials declined to comment publicly before a formal announcement by Mr. Obama, who will return from an eight-day trip to Asia on Sunday. Administration officials said details about the package of executive actions were still being finished and could change. An announcement could be pushed off until next month but will not be delayed into next year, officials said.

“Before the end of the year, we’re going to take whatever lawful actions that I can take that I believe will improve the functioning of our immigration system,” Mr. Obama said during a news conference a day after last week’s midterm elections.

“What I’m not going to do is just wait.”

The decision to move forward sets in motion a political confrontation between Mr. Obama and his Republican adversaries that is likely to affect budget negotiations and debate about Loretta E. Lynch, the president’s nominee to be attorney general, during the lame-duck session of Congress that began this week. It is certain to further enrage Republicans as they take control of both chambers of Congress early next year.

A group of Republicans — led by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama — is already planning to thwart any executive action by the president on immigration. The senators are hoping to rally their fellow Republicans to oppose efforts to pass a budget next month unless it explicitly prohibits the president from enacting what they call “executive amnesty” for people in the country illegally.

TT’s most wanted has rap sheet of 39 charges

HIS country’s most wanted man has a rap sheet with 39 serious criminal charges — of which four have been determined and the rest pending before the courts — stretching back to 2004.

The charges date back to when Azmon Alexander was a teenager. He remains a fugitive from the law up to last night, wanted as a person of interest in the Brasso Seco missing family mystery.

His first recorded charge was for possession of a firearm before an Arima Magistrate in 2004. That matter is still pending before the court. Some of the other matters still pending are for kidnapping, false imprisonment, robbery with violence, robbery with aggravation, assault with intent to rob, demanding a ransom, escaping lawful custody and rape among other serious offences.

The police profile on Alexander lists him as being formerly of Bye-Pass Road, Arima and also Malabar. He is five feet seven inches tall and is described as slim in build, dougla (Afro/Indo descent) and brown skinned. He has been described as armed and dangerous.

His history includes escape from custody on January 31 this year while

under police escort after appearing before a Mayaro Magistrate charged with kidnapping and robbery. Police claimed that Alexander, also known as ‘Pappy’ and ‘Apalon’, made his dash for freedom after assaulting two officers. It was his second escape from legal custody.

Three policemen remain on suspension over this escape.

Sources revealed that in 2010, a 13-year-old schoolgirl last seen in the company of Alexander disappeared without a trace and has never been found. Police believe she was raped, murdered and her body buried in a shallow grave somewhere in the Paria forests. Alexander has distinctive tattoo markings on both hands, one of which is a human skull.

Yesterday, residents of Ackbarali East Trace, Malabar where Alexander grew up said he began life as a criminal at an early age when he became involved with the wrong group of persons. There was no turning back for him as he graduated to being a career criminal, a description used by police. He is said to have mastered the art of imprisoning his victims.

Residents claimed that as far as they were aware he spent some time in jail and is a classic case of recidivism. They

expressed dismay that he may be linked to the disappearance of the Brasso Seco family, but added they did not want him in their community and vowed to report any sighting of him.

Sources pointed out that based on information received, Alexander was in possession of a phone up until one week ago and had been making calls to persons at Brasso Seco and Arima.

He had stopped using the phone prior to the discovery of two bodies found in a sleeping bag down a precipice in Brasso Seco on Saturday.

Police are also working on information that there are persons from the Brasso Seco area who have been harbouring Alexander by providing him with food, clothing and other necessities.

Yesterday, ACP (Crime) Carlton Alleyne reminded members of the public that Alexander is considered a career

criminal and anyone who harbours him will face prosecution.

“We are asking the public to assist us by giving us information to arrest the perpetrators of these heinous crimes,” Alleyne said. “We are dealing with a seasoned criminal who has been involved in alleged false imprisonment, kidnapping and sexual assault as the records will show, so we are saying that to help restore a level of peace in the community, people could help police and desist from helping any criminal.”

Newsday understands that officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment and Police have been assisting officers on the ground with key information.

A car which Alexander was seen driving was said to have been discovered yesterday parked in an area along the Bye Pass Road in the Mt Pleasant area in Arima.

he combined opposition yesterday restated that there will be no extra-parliamentary talks with the government, piling further pressure on President Donald Ramotar to signal when the House will be reconvened or fresh elections called.

With Ramotar’s suspension of Parliament on Monday continuing to rankle the opposition, APNU yesterday announced a rally at the Square of the Revolution tomorrow at which the AFC will be present.

In his statement on Monday suspending parliament for what could be up to six months, Ramotar said that if there was no prospect of dialogue he would call early elections.

“The Joint Opposition have resolved that there will be no extra parliamentary engagement with the President on the matters which were before the National Assembly,” A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) proclaimed in a joint statement yesterday.

The statement added that “The Joint Opposition have further resolved that they will embark upon a series of measures dedicated to restoration of the National Assembly as the most appropriate venue for the discussion and consideration of affairs of the state and its

No talks outside House people… The APNU and AFC will alert the international community, foreign missions and international and domestic business community that any contract, other than contracts for the supply of essential goods and services, entered into by the current administration during the period of (prorogation) will be subject to review and possible rescission upon the election of a new administration.”

The opposition groups contended that President Ramotar has “shut down” and “extinguished” any prospect of discussions with the opposition by proroguing Parliament which “is the highest and principal forum in which the people’s business is discussed.”

Leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan when asked by the Stabroek News if he would participate if the President requested a meeting said “I personally will not. Whatever he would want to tell us at that meeting he can say through the Press. We will duly respond in kind. This will be transparent enough. He has been so contemptuous to the Opposition recently and especially the AFC, I hardly can contemplate attending a meeting called by him.”

He said that the current situation by way of suspension of the National Assembly was “more than duress, it is bloody tyranny.”

“AFC will not have any engagements with Ramotar until he reconvenes’ Parliament. We will make this conditionality a non-negotiable! Parliament must never be expropriated’ from the duly elected people’s representatives by the Executive branch in this fashion in this day and age. The PPP has become a rogue Government now that it has prorogued this premier institution of the Republic,” Ramjattan said.

He revealed that letters for the international community had already been drafted and were sent to the APNU for revision and to be signed jointly with Leader of the Opposition David Granger.

APNU Executive Dr Rupert Roopnaraine stated that the letters to be disseminated to the various international agencies on behalf of the party included the Organisation of American States, the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank, the Union of South American Nations and Caricom.

Roopnaraine said that the coalition was unable to meet with the American, British, Canadian and European Union envoys yesterday and that a meeting was concretized for today at noon. The AFC has already met with the Western missions.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the House, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds told Stabroek News that he remains hopeful that there can be meaningful engagements and dialogue between the government and opposition.

Stabroek News asked Hinds what is the government’s strategy given the opposition’s firm stance that there will be no engagements as long as the prorogation stands. He said that officially the Office of the President was currently handling that aspect of the contentious issue.

Hinds told Stabroek News that “as the Leader of the House (for government business) I am very disappointed that we have reached this point.”

The Prime Minister said that “with respect to dialogue it might be difficult and challenging to imagine any success,” however he remained optimistic. He said that the decision to prorogue Parliament was fully supported by the Cabinet and that the no-confidence motion that was bound to be debated would have resulted in contentions. “We may have given as good as we may have gotten,” Hinds stated in relation to the probability of ensuing arguments had Monday’s Parliament sitting been convened and the no-confidence motion been up for debate.

Agni, God of Fire Agni, the god of Fire, is one of the most prominent of the deities of the Vedas. With the single exception of Indra, more hymns are addressed to him than to any other deity.

THE ORIGIN & APPEARANCE OF AGNI Various accounts are given of the origin of Agni. He is said to be a son of Dyaus and Prithivi; he is called the son ofBrahma, and is then named Abhimani; and he is reckoned amongst the children of Kasyapa and Aditi, and hence one of the Adityas. In the later writings he is described as a son of Angiras, king of the Pitris (fathers of mankind), and the authorship of several hymns is ascribed to him.

He accompanies the gods when they visit the earth, and shares in the reverence and adoration which they receive.

He makes the oblations fragrant; without him the gods experience no satisfaction.

THE UNIQUENESS OF AGNI Agni is the lord, protector, king of men.

He is the lord of the house, dwelling in ev-

Wonderful is his growth, seeing that he is born of a mother who cannot nourish him; but he is nourished by the oblations of clarified butter which are poured into his mouth, and which he consumes.

THE MIGHT OF AGNI The highest divine functions are ascribed to Agni. Although in some places he is spoken of as the son of heaven and earth, in others he is said to have stretched them out; to have formed them, and all that flies or walks, or stands or moves. He formed the sun, and adorned the heavens with stars. Men tremble at his mighty deeds, and his ordinances cannot be resisted. Earth, heaven, and all things obey his commands. All the gods fear, and do homage to him. He knows

In pictures, he is represented as a red man, having three legs and seven arms, dark eyes, eyebrows and hair. He rides on a ram, wears a poita (Brahmanical thread), and a garland of fruit. Flames of fire issue from his mouth, and seven streams of glory radiate from his body.

He is a swift messenger, moving between heaven and earth, commissioned both by gods and men to maintain their mutual communication, to announce to the immortals the hymns, and to convey to them the oblations of their worshippers; or to bring them (the immortals) down from the sky to the place of sacrifice.

He carries men across calamities, as a ship over the sea. He commands all the riches in earth and heaven; hence he is invoked for riches, food, deliverance, and in fact all temporal good. He is also prayed to as the forgiver of sins that may have been committed through folly. All gods are said to be comprehended in him; he surrounds them as the circumference of a wheel does the spokes.

AGNI IN HINDU SCRIPTURES & EPICS In a celebrated hymn of the Rig-Veda, attributed to Visishtha, Indra and the other gods are called upon to destroy the Kravyads (the flesh-eaters), or Rakshas, enemies of the gods. Agni himself is a Kravyad, and as such takes an entirely different character. He is then represented under a form as hideous as the beings he, in common with the other gods, is called upon to devour. He sharpens his two iron tusks, puts his enemies into his mouth, and devours them. He heats the edges of his shafts, and sends them into the hearts of the Rakshasas.

In the Mahabharata, Agni is represented as having exhausted his vigour by devouring too many oblations, and desiring to consume the whole Khandava forest, as a means of recruiting his strength. He was [at first] prevented from doing this

by Indra; but having obtained the assistance of Krishna and Arjuna, he baffled Indra, and accomplished his object.

THE MANY HUES OF AGNI Agni is an immortal who has taken up his abode with mortals as their guest.

He is the domestic priest who rises before the dawn, and who concentrates in his own person and exercises in a higher sense all the various sacrificial offices which the Indian ritual assigns to a number of different human functionaries.

He is a sage, the divinest among the sages, immediately acquainted with all the forms of worship; the wise director, the successful accomplisher, and the protector of all ceremonies, who enables men to serve the gods in a correct and acceptable manner in cases where they could not do this with their own unaided skill.

In a funeral hymn, Agni is asked to warm with his heat the unborn (immortal) part of the deceased, and in his auspicious form to carry it to the world of the righteous.

According to the Ramayana, in order to assist Vishnu when incarnate as Rama, Agni became the father of Nila by a monkey mother; and according to the Vishnu Purana, he married Swaha, by whom he had three sons-Pavaka, Pavamana, and Suchi. ery abode. He is a guest in every home; he despises no man, he lives in every family.

He is therefore considered as a mediator between gods and men, and as a witness of their actions; hence to the present day he is worshipped, and his blessing sought on all solemn occasions, as at marriage, death, etc.

In these old hymns Agni is spoken of as dwelling in the two pieces of wood which being rubbed together produce fire; and it

the secrets of mortals, and hears the invocations that are addressed to him.

WHY DO HINDUS WORSHIP AGNI? The worshippers of Agni prosper, are wealthy, and live long. He watches with a thousand eyes over the man who brings him food, and nourishes him with oblations. No mortal enemy can by any wondrous power gain the mastery over him who sacrifices to this god. He also confers and is the guardian of immortality.

THE 7 NAMES OF AGNI Agni has many names: Vahni (who receives the hom, or burnt sacrifice); Vitihotra, (who sanctifies the worshipper); Dhananjaya (who conquers riches); Jivalana (who burns); Dhumketu (whose sign is smoke); Chhagaratha (who rides on a ram); Saptajihva (who has seven tongues).

Caribbean Star Newspaper Accused drag racer on bail after denying blame in friend’s death November 14–20, 2014

lleged drag racer Christopher Bridjmohan was yesterday charged with causing the death of his friend Christopher Baichan and for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Bridjmohan, 20, of Lot 174 Campbell Street, Albouystown, pleaded not guilty to both charges when he was arraigned yesterday at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and he was later released on $250,000 bail after his lawyer alleged that he was run off the road by a taxi.

It is alleged that he drove motor car PPP 3838 in a dangerous manner on November 9, at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara (ECD), thereby causing the death of Baichan. It was further alleged that Bridjmohan was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

According to Police Inspector John Singh, who presented the police’s case, Bridjmohan along with other persons assembled at Le Ressouvenir, ECD, where they were preparing to drag race. Singh further mentioned that police ranks in the area at the time stopped

Christopher Baichan the activity, only to be abused by those assembled to drag race, whom he described as “children of celebrities.”

He noted that Bridjmohan was among the assembled group and was consuming alcohol as well. The prosecutor said that the group subsequently left. Bridjmohan, Singh stated, later lost control of his car while speeding on the road, resulting in the death of Bai-

chan, who was a passenger in the car.

Bridjmohan’s attorney James Bond, however, told the court that his client, upon the request of Baichan, who was his best friend, was on his way to take Baichan home. He said that Bridjmohan was run off the road by a yellow cab, resulting in the fatal crash. He opined that things might have ended differently if Baichan was wearing his seat belt, while pointing out that his client was wearing his.

Singh rejected the attorney’s claims of another vehicle being involved in the crash. He also strongly objected to bail, while noting that Bridjmohan was driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding on the roadway. He suggested that Bridjmohan might not appear in court to answer the charges if released on bail, while citing the case of accused Hafraz Mangroo, who was charged with causing the death of Lovina Williams but who fled before sentencing. He was sentenced to a five-year jail term in his absence, after he stopped turning up at his trial.

Bond protested the objection to bail. He told the court that the offences were bailable and he argued that bail should not be seen as punitive. The attorney explained that the defendant’s family is bearing the cost of Baichan’s funeral. He added that his client was willing to lodge his passport and dismissed the prosecution’s claims that he might not return to answer the charges levelled against him.

Singh then announced that he would be guided by the court’s decision but noted that he stood by his objections.

Magistrate Alex Moore subsequently placed Bridjmohan on $250,000 bail, providing that he lodge his passport with the police and report to the Sparendaam Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Fridays between 8am and 12noon.

The case will be called again on December 15, when a report on the matter is expected to be presented to the court.

A

taxi driver succumbed in hospital yesterday, five days after he was allegedly assaulted by a prison officer, who is now in police custody in connection with the man’s death.

Dead is Anthony Narine, 28, of Latchman Singh Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.

A police statement said he was involved in an altercation with a man from Soesdyke last Thurs-day and suffered injuries for which he was hospitalised.

The statement added that the suspect is in police custody.

According to the dead man’s wife Amrita Narine, she got a call at 9pm Thursday last and was informed that her husband was involved in a fight with another man at the Soesdyke/Linden Highway junction, where he operated his taxi cab. She said when she went to the junction, she met a conscious Anthony, who explained that he was with other drivers when insults were hurled at the prison officer “watchmaning” his wife.

The prison officer had entered a

nearby gas station to meet with the wife.

“Other drivers tell me that the prison officer was wrong,” Amrita said. She explained that she received accounts that suggested that Anthony was singled out by the enraged officer, who pulled out a military badge and identified himself as a policeman and attempted to arrest Anthony.

However, she said that he walked away from his assailant after persons alerted him to the man’s true occupation. It is reported that the prison officer then punched Anthony to the neck and hit him on the head several times.

Despite the attack, Amrita said her husband told her that he was fine and they went home.

However, she said that at 1am on Friday, he woke her and complained of a severe headache.

“Then 6am he start vomiting and I rush he to the hospital,” Amrita further mentioned, while noting that her husband lost consciousness.

Anthony, who remained unconscious during his admission at the Woodlands Hospital, succumbed to his injuries yesterday afternoon at approximately 3:20pm. Amrita said her husband’s head was swollen on

the right side and a blood vessel in his neck was blocked. He was scheduled to have a C-scan done today.

The grieving widow said although a statement could not be taken from her husband, the

police have since received two statements from eyewitnesses.

Anthony, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, is survived by his wife and their two children, who are six-years-old, and 11-months-old.

ODY number three has been found.

Police and soldiers, following a foul stench trail after being alerted by a farmer, yesterday afternoon came across the decomposing corpse of what is believed to be a female human, thrown haphazardly among tall bushes in the Brasso Seco forests.

The discovery of this body, comes three days after the bodies of Felix Martinez, 51, and little one-year-old Shania Amoroso were found 100 feet down a precipice also in the Brasso Seco forests.

The difference between the two discoveries, police said, was that while considerable efforts were made to conceal Martinez and Shania’s bodies, both of which were found in

sleeping bags at the foot of a precipice, the body found yesterday was thrown into bushes for all to see.

While no conclusive identification could be made yesterday, police are almost certain that this third body is that of either Irma Rampersad, 49, her daughter Felicia Gonzales, 17, or other daughter Jenelle Gonzales, 19. An autopsy will be done today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

What the discovery of a third corpse means is that only two pieces (bodies) remain to be located to complete a grisly, horrific and macabre puzzle in which a Paria family of four — Rampersad, her daughters Felicia and Jenelle and Rampersad’s granddaughter Shania — and family friend Martinez, disappeared from Rampersad’s Mount Bleau, Brasso Seco, Paria home two weeks ago.

Police at the scene yesterday said the discovery of bodies, while tragic, brings closure not only to the grieving relatives and friends, but also to dozens of police officers and

soldiers who for more than 14 days have been relentless in their search of the dense Brasso Seco and Paria forests for the missing persons.

According to officers, at about three o’clock yesterday afternoon, a farmer alerted lawmen at a make-shift operations centre in the Blanchisseuse Police Station, that he had detected a foul stench while tending to his garden in the Brasso Seco forests.

Officers using cadaver dogs soon picked up the scent of death and trekked into the forest. At 5 pm, a quarter mile north of Rampersad’s house, they came across the corpse which was thrown into some tall bushes. The discovery yesterday was also not too far from the precipice where the first two bodies were found last Saturday.

Police sources told Newsday the corpse’s two legs are missing. Assistant Commissioner of Police Carlton Alleyne, in confirming yesterday’s discovery, said every effort will be made to locate and retrieve the missing body

parts .

Contacted for comment, Rampersad’s husband Peter Sylvester, told of the discovery of the third body, cried out: “Jesus Christ...is this for real? Is your information correct? What is really happening here!” Overcome with grief, he could speak no further and as he cried he abruptly ended the call.

Autopsies completed yesterday on the bodies of Martinez and baby Shania concluded that he died from asphyxia consistent with strangulation while cause of death for the baby was inconclusive. Tissue samples have been taken for further tests.

Former policemam Cristo Adonis, who is a member of the search party, told Newsday that the killer or killers are familiar with the terrain of the forests.

“This person or these persons have been in the area for a while and they know their way around the terrain,” said adonis. Police sources said the search for the remaining two bodies will continue today.

t about 2140h. last night, police say that Altaf Maidan, 29 years, and three other men were attacked and robbed while in a shop at Success, ECD, by four men, two of whom were armed with cutlasses and one with a firearm.

Members of the Community Policing Group and other public spirited persons responded and were joined by police ranks following receipt of the report. There was an exchange of gunfire during which one of the suspects was shot and injured to his left foot. HE Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has granted approval to Dynamic Airways to recommence services between John F Kennedy and the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (JFKGEO) as of November 22, 2014.

Speaking briefly with the Guyana Chronicle, Managing Director of Roraima Group of Companies, Captain Gerald Gouveia said that he received confirmation from GCAA to recommence plying the route from November 22 and the approval allows the airline at this point to operate until June 9, 2015.

TICKET SALES He also noted that this approval now gives the company the permission to allow travel agencies to sell tickets for the approved period. According to the document received from GCAA, the airline will be flying on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Captain Gouveia whose company provides General Sales Agent (GSA) services to Conviasa and Insel Air will now recommence this service to Dynamic Airways which he had alluded to during a recent press conference.

Gouveia explained at a recent press conference after gaining permission from the Department of Transportation (DOT) in the Unites States that, “the company has filed all documents to GCAA with the last piece of document filed yesterday (Monday November 10). We are now awaiting their approval which has to be sent to the Minister of Works for the final ok.”

Gouveia had informed media operatives that after the false start Dynamic Airways would have experienced during June and July this year, “they have regrouped with new management.”

Lillian Bunsee had never ventured close to the dogs as she had been attacked in the past, but yesterday morning one of the dogs escaped from its kennel and again attacked her, this time killing her.

Neighbours said the dog was one of approximately ten which were bred and being given aggression training in preparation for sale by two of the woman’s relatives.

Never once did the residents hear Bunsee scream for help but only noticed she was being attacked as they walked along the roadway close to her home on La Seiva Road, Maraval.

Police said it was shortly after 9 a.m. that the residents saw the woman on the ground with the dog tearing away at her body. They tried throwing boulders at the animal in an attempt to stop it but their efforts were unsuccessful, said officers.

Investigators said several police officers who were on patrol nearby went to the scene after receiving a report and was only able to have the dog stop biting the woman after opening fire on the animal, shooting it six times.

Residents in the area said the officers had no other option but to kill the dog.

The other dogs were all locked away in their kennels, they said.

“After the first two shots the dog was still biting the woman, like the shots did nothing to it. The police had to shoot it four more times before it stopped,” said one man.

Imagine that you started to bleed unexpectedly from your genitals.

How long would it take you to visit a doctor?

M

any persons might respond with “immediately” or even “a few hours” and scoff at the idea of waiting longer than these periods to visit a doctor if they exhibited such a symptom. However, how many of the previous answers would remain the same when factors such as finances, access to doctors, and the invasiveness of some checkups come into the equation?

Has “immediately” become a day? A day a week? Or longer?

In theory, the answer to the initial question should be a frantic “right away!”But in reality, more and more Guyanese are visiting a doctor less and less despite showing alarming symptoms. Though many persons understand that the right thing to do is to have regular check-ups and exams, it is not as simple as it appears.

In an interview with Stabroek News, a 21-year-old-woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said that she had experienced unexplained bleeding from her vagina for months before she decided to visit a doctor. According to the woman, she visited the same doctor several times earlier this year before she subsequently stopped because there had been no resolution of her bleeding despite the visits. The bleeding, she said, eventually stopped a few months ago and she has not followed it up elsewhere since.

When asked why she had waited months before taking the step to see a doctor, the woman explained that she had been both deterred by the thought of an invasive procedure and dwindling finances. She noted that the visits had been expensive and the prescribed medication even more so, though it proved to be ineffective. “I just got put off after all of that and never bothered to see what was it after I stopped bleeding,” she said.

The young woman was one of 20 Guyanese—10 male and 10 female— approached by Stabroek News with questions about their medical histories.

These persons were asked whether they had ever undergone a prostate, breast or cervical examinations. They were also questioned on whether they had gone for a medical check-up within the past five years without first being ill. The respondents were as young as 19 and as old as 55.

Shockingly, none of the respondents had undergone any prostate, cervical or breast examination in their lives; none of them had visited a doctor within the last five years without being seriously unwell.

These figures are just a microcosm of the larger Guyanese society and are

concerning in a country where cancer is the third leading cause of death, according to a 2004 to 2011 report from the Ministry of Health.

Most respondents voiced the belief that doing regular checkups was “not a Guyanese norm.”

“I haven’t done a medical checkup in the last 10 years; in the last 20 years in fact,” one male respondent said, before adding that the process could be invasive. Another respondent said that he had thought about having a prostate exam but never “pursued or followed up the issue.”

‘They’re not seeking any help’ Dr Narendra Bhalla, radiation oncologist with the Cancer Institute of Guyana, explained that not enough Guyanese are taking their health seriously despite statistics, which show that hundreds of Guyanese each year are diagnosed with some form of cancer. Breast, prostate and cervical cancers were noted as having the highest rates of incidence and according to a December 2008 report from the Cancer Registry of Guyana, there were 998 cases of the three cancers within the country.

These figures are disturbing when one thinks of the numerous persons throughout Guyana who are yet to be diagnosed with the deadly disease.

According to Bhalla, education could play an integral role in the reduction of cancer incidence within the country.

“Sometimes people don’t recognise the alarming signs,” Bhalla noted.

He related one case when a team of doctors went into an interior location and found patients with far-gone stages of cancer.

“During that time, we found these stage three and stage four patients; they’re not seeking any help and they many times don’t know where to go, what to do. So this is the problem; people are not being properly educated,” Bhalla said.

He further said that persons are discouraged from visiting a doctor when these visits could rack up big medical bills. Persons who cannot afford to visit a private hospital always have the option of public ones such as the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), Bhalla said.

How-ever, he noted, the public hospital is often packed with people and the waiting time can drag on for hours. In addition, he noted, many persons do not even know that the Cancer Institute exists.

According to the oncologist, the Cancer Institute works closely with the GPH and receives referred patients from the public hospital. These patients, he said, are oftentimes already in the late stages of cancer.

(Arian Browne photo) “So they come to the Cancer Institute at stage three and stage four; I’m not seeing stage one; very rarely,” Bhalla said. He continued, “Some of them come when they are already at stage four, when they realise that there’s nothing they can do.”

Bhalla recalled one patient, a 15-year-old girl, who had developed a thick mass by the time he saw her. Another patient had a tumour on her skull for years and he only saw her a few months ago. “I can even see her brain as she is talking to me,” Bhalla shared.

He explained that when patients are referred to the institute with advanced stages of cancer, there is little that can be done due to the long process before surgery can be performed.

“Suppose somebody did biopsy and they’re at stage two… by time they get the pathology report they get to stage three,” Bhalla said. He added that these persons would then have to wait for official letters and other documentation before they can proceed with any surgery and must also factor in the availability of funds, which can exacerbate the waiting time before surgery. All the while, the cancer is progressing through the stages until it is too late.

In contrast, he said, if a patient is able to start the treatment soon after diagnosis, the cancer can be cured within one month.

Bhalla urged Guyanese to learn the signs and symptoms of diseases and not to procrastinate when they manifest.

Signs and symptoms, he said, should not be overlooked.

He also noted the use of self-examination of the breasts for women, which can be performed in the comfort of one’s home.

He further said that examinations to detect cancer, such as the visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and mammograms, are available for free at most reproductive health facilities throughout the country and he emphasised the need for healthier lifestyle choices by Guyanese, including improved diet and physical activity along with the reduction of habits such as smoking.

He recommended that sexually active women get tested for cervical cancer because the examination could save their lives, while men, particularly older ones in their fifties and beyond, should undergo a prostate exam.

Bhalla reiterated that it is easier to prevent cancer than cure it. “Prevention is always better than cure,” he said.

ow few are the people who know happiness and peace of mind. Among these few are those who value it, and if we look closely at some of them, we would realize the truth in them is little, surrounded by a lot of falsehood. Like a star almost losing its light from the darkness of the night. Many are the calamities that befall us, that fill our horizon with thundering clouds.

How often is it that one of us faces things that he does not like when he is deprived of something that he desires? Here comes the role of happiness, happiness that chases despair away, and acceptance that negates rebelliousness. Happiness that goes with a human being wherever he goes, settles when he settles and is buried with him in his grave.

It is the happiness that Sheikh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyah Rahimu Allah, described when he said:” What can my enemies do to harm me? Will they imprison me? If they kill me, then I am a martyr, (Shaheed), and if they expel me, then it’s striving for the sake of Allah. Happiness and misery is something that will remain as long as life continues.

Each human being on the surface of earth is aggressively searching for happiness, and hoping to attain it at the expense of all that he owns.

Some people, who are deluded and deceived, find happiness to be something that has no reality to it, nothing but an imagination, invented from deception that has no reality. The truth is, that such people are ignorant, and deceived, because it is impossible that, Allah created us to be miserable.

Allah says to His Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), which translates as: “Taha, we have not sent down to you The Qur’an that you be distressed or miserable”(Ta Ha: 1- 2). In addition Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as:”And if they should come to you for guidance from me, then, whoever follows my guidance will neither go astray in the world nor suffer in the hereafter” (Ta Ha: 123).

Happiness, is the paradise of dreams all mankind seek to attain, from those educated at the highest level of intelligence to a simple minded, naive person, from a ruler in a huge castle or mansion to a poor person in a small cell, living in poverty.

We don’t think that any of them deliberately look for misery and distress, nor accept that to happen to him.

A servant without faith is a weak creation. In this weakness, when he is inflicted with harm, he gives up in despair. If he receives well, he becomes miserly. In both situations, he is worried and fearful.

As Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala says

which translates as: “Indeed mankind was created anxious, when evil touches him in patient, and when good touches him withholding of it except the observers of prayers”(Al-Ma’arij: 19-22).

When a person loses happiness in the heart, it is replaced with worry and emotional disturbance. Four monsters gather against him to destroy and weaken him. Besides the fact that happiness and peace of mind is lost, these four; grief, sadness, worry, and sleeplessness grip him.

There is nothing more difficult than the effect of grief in the life of a servant. It weakens his faith and disrupts his acts of obedience to his creator, thus threatening the divine connection between Allah and the servant.

The fact is, then, that happiness, tranquility and peace of mind is a favor from Allah while Grief, Worry, Stress and Anger are from Allah as tests. At the time of hardship, when matters become serious, when the difference appears between a happy person, and one in distress, Allah looks at the actions of his servant, will he be steadfast on the straight path or will he be governed by his distress and digress from the obedience of Allah.

Happiness is a phrase that a lot of people are mistaken in defining it and explaining it, nor do they agree on its definition. So, they start from their imagination, thinking of what it could be? The rich amongst them, thinks that happiness is his health and wealth. And the poor of them, thinks, that it is in gaining more money, garments and wealth. The politician of them, thinks that it is, achieving his goals and the smartness of making injustice appear like justice. And, the one in love, thinks that, happiness is the reunion with his beloved.

The just person and the inspired one look with insight, and realizes the silliness and absurdity of these guesses. And the big gap and illusion that is therein, because, the wealthy will realize that this mansion of his with his illusive happiness is being shared by his servants and followers and perhaps the watchdogs. So, he realizes that, the happiness is not in that mansion. And the poor, the exhausted looks at the people of wealth with this artificial happiness and realizes that many of them are depressed and sad in spite of their wealth.

So what is happiness and how do we achieve it?

Allah has promised happiness to those who will believe and do good deeds. While he has promised a life of difficulty and distress to those who will ignore the truth and disobey him. Thus by this criterion, none

could be more deserving of happiness than the prophets of Allah (Alyhimus Salaam).

Yet we find that they lived lives of poverty and difficulties. So what exactly is happiness?

When we examine the lives of the prophets and our pious predecessors, we find that in spite of not having the material valuables of this world, these individuals were very happy and led much less stressful lives than ours today. Allah had blessed them with contentment. They had the firm belief that, only that which Allah had decreed for them would come to them and what Allah had not decreed would never come to them. This belief filled their hearts with contentment thus bringing them immense happiness and freedom from worry and stress.

Happiness is not something that is measured by quantity nor could it be bought by currency, no human possesses it to sell it, nor can they take it away from one who was granted it. Happiness, is accepting Allah and satisfaction with his decree, and trusting Allah by seeking support and aid from him, and whoever tastes faith tastes happiness.

The Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, as in the Hadith Sahih Imam Muslim: “You will find the tastes of faith, he who accepts Allah as his Lord, Islam as his faith, and Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as his messenger.

The messenger (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said as in the book of Imam Tirmidhi: “From the happiness of the son of Adam is that he accepts what Allah decrees, and the misery of the son of Adam is that he rejects, and rebels against what Allah decrees”.

Al Farooq Umar Radhiallahu Anhu wrote to Abu Musa Ashari Radhiallahu Anhuma saying: “All good lies in acceptance and satisfaction, so if you can, then accept and be satisfied (i.e. with a decree), or otherwise persevere”.

So we should not fear grief, worry, and sadness as long as our matter is according to what Allah said in Hadith”Qudsi” Bukhari and Muslim: “I will be what my servant thinks of me, and I am with him when he remembers me, and when he remembers me alone, I remember him alone, and if he remembers me or mentions me in a group I will mention him in a group better than that”.

So if happiness was a tree that grows in the human soul, then the faith in Allah, his angles, his messengers, the hereafter and the decree of Allah, is its water, food, air and light.

Allah says which translates as: “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah, unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, their hearts are assured. Those who have believed and done righteous deed, a good state is theirs, and a good return (Ar-Ra’d: 28-29).

Among the reasons that will make a person lose happiness is music, the trumpet of Shaytan, an introduction to fornication and adultery. It causes hypocrisy and worry to grow in the heart, just like water causes plants to grow. And though some claim to derive happiness from music, that pleasure is very short lived followed by nothing more than emptiness and depression.

Allah, Subhanahu Wa Taala says which translates as: “And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech, to miss lead others from the way of Allah” (Luqman: 6).

Ibn Masoud Radhi Allah Anhu swore by Allah three times that this was music. What destroys happiness is making the Muslim house a dwelling for the evil jinn while isolating, and pushing away angles. This happens by spreading and hanging pictures that Allah has made forbidden on the walls, and on the corridors.

The Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: “Angles do not enter a house that has a dog or picture” So why is it there are many people close the doors and shut it for angles and they invite reasons of misery and worry while they seek happiness after that?

The pathway to misery is sins, which the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said: “The servants might be deprived from his sustenance because of a sin that he commits”.

That is why, happiness of the heart that is the result of blessed sustenance which is directly related to obedience and piety.

Among the reasons that could result in worry, is negligence of Salaah and belittling its importance. The Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) said in the books of Imam Ahmad and Nisa’i, He said (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam): “The light of my eye is in prayer”.

In the books of Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawood, he (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) was described, that whenever something disturbed him, he initiated a prayer.

Neglecting the remembrance of Allah, supplications and asking his forgiveness are also reasons for misery, sadness and grief.

Thus, the one who is seeking happiness must not neglect nor be heedless regarding this important matter. He must hold on to it.

Always remember the saying of the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as in the book of Al Imam Dawood and Nisa’i: “Whoever continuously asks the forgiveness of Allah, Allah makes a way out from every grief, and He will provide him and sustain him in places he does not expect”.

One day the Prophet (Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) entered the Masjid and He saw a man of the Ansar, called Abu Umaamah.

So, He said: “Abu Umaamah, why do I see you sitting in the Masjid when it is not time for prayer?” He said: “Grief and debts on me, O Messenger of Allah”. He said:” Shall I teach you words that if you should say, Allah will release you from your grief, and pay off your debts “. I said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah”. He said: “Every morning and in the evening say, O Allah I ask refuge in you from grief and sorrow and I ask refuge in you in disability and laziness, and ask refuge in Allah from cowardliness and stinginess, and I ask refuge in you to be overwhelmed by debts and over the control of men”. Abu Umaamah said:” I did that and Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala relieved me from my grief and paid off my debts”. This Hadith is in the book of Abu Dawood.

QUICK response from the police on the East Coast of Demerara on Tuesday night saw the arrest of three men in the East Coast village of Success. Reports are that the men travelled to the village from a community in Georgetown, where they robbed a shop using cutlasses and a gun.

Captured are Cleon Horshan, 20, of 430 West Ruimveldt; Anthony Cha, 31, of 437 West Ruimveldt and Kevin Anthony, 22, of 271 West Ruimveldt. An accomplice who was also with them

managed to escape in what residents say was a car with which they had travelled to the location.

According to information reaching this newspaper from persons who live in the vicinity, the men showed up at approximately 21.40hrs at the “Peter Rum Shop” in Success, where they proceeded to attack occupants of the shop.

The bandits also robbed the occupants by taking away cash and other valuables before they fled the scene. However, the victims raised an alarm and residents came

out in their numbers and cornered the bandits forcing them to seek cover in neighbouring premises and trenches, while the police were summoned to the location.

The police reportedly arrived promptly and upon seeing the police vehicle, the bandit who was armed with the gun reportedly opened fire in the direction of the ranks who returned fire hitting him to the left foot in the process, as the other surrendered and another fled.

nearby, reportedly also assisted in cornering the bandits.

According to reports, angry residents inflicted a beating on one of the suspects, while the police were able to rescue the other from the same fate. The Guyana Chronicle was told that one of the injured bandits was scheduled to undergo surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the other was admitted and is under police guard. The third suspect is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

arrived at the location yesterday morning, residents were loud in their praise for the police and members of the Community Policing Group for their timely response that saw the capture of the men.

The police are working on the theory that the fourth bandit who managed to escape is living in the vicinity of the other and as such searches were conducted in the West Ruimveldt community, even as they depend on the suspect who is in custody to inform them of who the fourth man is.

Businessman shot by bandit during attempted hold-up

Police and army ranks were present at the scene of the shooting soon after its occurrence A businessman is now hospitalised after he was shot in an attempted robbery at his city store yesterday.

Inshan Ally, of Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, was shot around 4:05pm when two men, one of them armed, entered the Style Palace General Store on King Street, Georgetown and demanded cash from Ally’s wife, Rakeema Ally.

However, instead of handing over any money the woman pulled out a cutlass while her husband reached for his licensed firearm and in return the armed bandit shot the businessman to the left side of his abdomen. It is unclear whether the wounded man fired any shots of his own.

The gunmen managed to escape and the shot man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Shortly after the shooting, ranks from both the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Police Force were on the scene investigating. Plainclothes detectives were also noticed about a corner away.

At the hospital, a relative of Ally was tightlipped but stated that the injured man was doing well. A hospital source also said the same and stated that the shot man had been well enough to walk around the hospital’s compound and had not been immediately taken into the surgery.

The man was being attended to by doctors when this newspaper visited.

HE leader of Bahamas Faith Ministries Dr. Myles Munroe and his wife Ruth have been killed in a plane crash in Grand Bahama.

The crash took place on Sunday afternoon and killed all nine people on board the private jet. The plane reportedly struck a crane at the Grand Bahama Ship Yard, exploding on impact and crashing into the ground near a junkyard area.

The Department of Civil Aviation reported that the plane was a Lear 36 executive jet which departed the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) for the Grand Baha-

ma International Airport.

The plane left LPIA at 16.07hrs with nine people on board and crashed while making an approach for landing at Grand Bahama International Airport at 17.10hrs, the Department of Civil Aviation said.

A police source on the island previously said two were feared dead. However, police sources later confirmed that all those on board had been killed.

The police source also said it was believed the group was heading to a conference hosted by Pastor Munroe.

olice have arrested two men and are looking for a third in connection with the attack by wedding revellers on the home of a 63-year-old Imam at La Grange, West Bank Demerara on Sunday night.

Safir Warisali, a heart patient, had spoken out against loud music that was blasting from the home of a neighbour who was hosting a wedding.

As a result, some of the guests rained beer bottles at his home like missiles, leaving severe damage to the glass door and windows to the front of his house and to the windscreens of his car and jeep.

Beer bottles were still on his roof while alcohol was also all over on the building and he questioned, “How can we pray like this…?”

Yesterday, the man, a re-migrant was still counting his losses. He was also seriously considering selling out his property and returning to Canada. Otherwise, he plans to “go to the insurance company and increase my insurance.”

He told this newspaper that he suffered losses amounting to $500,000, explaining that the two windscreens for his car cost almost $100,000 and for the jeep, $180,000. He was also having a difficult time sourcing the windscreens.

The host of the wedding, who is the headmaster of the West Demerara Secondary School, has reportedly promised to pay for the damage.

The music started playing on Thursday evening at the house where a wedding was being celebrated, but not too loud.

It continued on Friday until 12:30, a bit louder but he said nothing.

On Saturday evening the music blasted to the fullest but yet, Warisali did not complain.

It was not until around 2:30 on Sunday morning when he could no longer take it that he went across and asked the host, who he said is the headmaster of West Demerara Secondary School to “turn down the base.”

The owner complied and even stopped the music but Warisali said rumours apparently got around that he had called the police.

The first attack was around 8.30 pm on Sunday when his son, Wazim, 29, a beekeeper was trying to drive out of the yard and realized that it had been blocked by a vehicle. He asked for it to be removed and an argument ensued.

Some of the guests at the wedding celebration who were drinking on the roadway then formed an angry mob and lobbed bottles at the two vehicles that were in the yard. This lasted for about half hour as Warisali, his wife and Wazim ducked for cover.

The man said he phoned the La Grange Police Station but no officer showed up.

He then hired a taxi and brought the officers to the scene and they took statements.

The Church as a Team Jesus said He will build His church and it will continue until His return to earth. (See Matthew 16:16-19). The operation of the Church bears the concept of teamwork.

M

any souls come to Christ and experience forgiveness and are connected to the Church. He calls us to do something for Him and we need to understand what the task at hand is, how we can accomplish it together, and how He empowers us to ensure the success of the Church. The task, in simple terms, is taking the good news of God’s love and man’s redemption to people who haven’t heard. No one of us can do this alone. We need each other in this great work for Christ. He promised to always be with us and demonstrate His power to confirm the word as souls receive it.

God always uses teams.

He looks for someone to impart His vision and become a Spirit filled leader, but He works with teams. He will surround this person with people who would love and support his or her leadership. Here are some examples: Gideon was raised up by God when the Midianites oppressed God’s people.

Though Gideon was insignificant in his community, God anointed him and used him along with an army of 300 men to defeat Midian and deliver Israel.

Nehemiah worked with a team of dedicated men to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. They were under threats so they worked with one hand and the other holding a weapon. Bible readers know the tremendous work was complete in 52 days.

This happens when the team understands their responsibilities.

Jesus started His work with a team of 12.

They were not the perfect bunch, but He managed to pull them together. After the Resurrection, they (except Judas) “turned the world upside down.”

Paul did not travel alone and strongly advocated teamwork. 1 Corinthians 3:710 “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God … According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.

But let every man take heed how he build-

eth thereupon.”

Teamwork is always more fruitful than isolated effort.

The teamwork concept was superbly demonstrated in the battle when Moses and the Israelites faced an attack from the Amalekites. Exodus 17:8-16 records it: “Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Ask Moses who was the greatest, who was the hero? He was not self-assertive, not boastful, not arrogant, just a man dependent on God, of a sweet, approachable, humble spirit. Numbers 12:3 says, “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.”

The team consisted of Moses, Aaron, Hur, Joshua, the entire army, supporters, cooks, cleaners, praying people, nurses, weapons makers, and children care-givers. There are no superstars in God’s team.

How do you hold up the hands of the leader?

The upraised hands of Moses speak of prayer. Leaders need our prayer support.

Pray for your Pastor and leaders. Speak well of them. I was in a class taught by

Alvin Slaughter once when he remarked many kids don’t go to church because parents don’t speak well of their church.

Two men holding up his hands speak of cooperation. If we will enjoy what we do for God, we must lend ourselves to cooperate with leadership. Then, everyone is happy. If we choose to do otherwise, we might get something done, but we lose the enjoyment. God is glorified in harmony.

Suppose one of them thought he could take Moses’ place, would the war have ended the same way? We have to recognize the one God chooses as our leader and submit to his plan and guidance. This is God’s way.

How do we make the leader’s hands fall?

We can allow Satan to infiltrate our team if we entertain gossip, never express appre-

ciation, or oppose the leader’s plans. Watch out for intruders who sow seeds of discord, or critics with a gift of pulling down and discouraging workers. Some folks won’t cooperate if they don’t have things their way, if they don’t get special recognition, or if they don’t see a reward coming. These negative attitudes can adversely impact the work we are called to do for Jesus.

The winning team enjoys many benefits.

This team will focus on the Mission.

They all have a common goal. Resources are shared – no one is selfish, but giving and supporting the others. Team members respect each other and coordinate the flow of tasks. They are accountable to each other. There is transparency and care for each other. Finally, everyone shares the glory of what is accomplished for God’s eternal kingdom. Join the team. Take your family to church this weekend.

’ DIVISION Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Brian Joseph told the Guyana Chronicle recently that he has recommended and requested from Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud an additional boat to patrol the waterways in that division.Asked whether the police were encountering any challenges in policing the waterways in his Division, Joseph responded in the negative. The Division has two boats, he said, one of which is presently operational, and the Force has recently acquired parts to carry out mechanical works to return the other boat to active duty.

Commander Joseph said “B” Division police do not have issues with policing the waterways, and the boat which is presently operational has been serving the division fairly well.

He added that Berbice River areas are not known for much waterway crimes, but the police have been able to determine that the most prevalent criminal activity occurring there is the cultivation of marijuana.

Joseph also said that the division recently recorded what is being dubbed as its largest ever seizure of marijuana in an operation which was carried out earlier this year.

Crane businessman on $600,000 bail after denying weapon charges

A

Crane businessman was yesterday arraigned on weapon charges after a search by police officers allegedly uncovered a revolver and matching ammunition on him.

Robert Hussain, 26, of Crane Village, West Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the two charges read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.

It was alleged that on November 7, at Vreed-en-Hoop, Hussain had in his possession a .32 revolver, without being a licensed firearm holder, and seven rounds of .32 ammunition, also without a licence.

The prosecution’s case is that police, acting on information, conducted a search on minibus GKK 1892 and on Hussain, who was the lone occupant of the bus at the time and the weapon along with the ammunition was found tucked in his pants waist. Based on the facts of the discovery of the weapon, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to Hussain being granted bail.

Attorney Peter Hugh, who represented Hussain, told the court that Hussain is the proprietor of Twisters Digital Audio and there was no pending charge in the court against him. He argued that the prosecution did not present enough special reasons to justify the withholding of bail.

Hugh also stated that the gun was found in the driver’s seat of the minibus and not on his client’s person as was claimed in the police statement.

He also argued that Hussain is constitutionally entitled to be tried within a specified time frame and the fact that the magistrate’s court at Vreed-en-Hoop does not have a current sitting magistrate to facilitate his client’s matter in a timely manner were grounds for bail to be granted in a reasonable sum.

After considering Hugh’s arguments and perusing the case file, the Chief Magistrate set bail at $300,000 on each count.

Hussain was ordered to return to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on November 13.

Kali Bharat Yatra October 2014 Tour Party:

Entertained by Pavitra Rishta and Other Bollywood Stars

he 31st annual Kali Bharat Yatra tour to India had a number of highlights that made this tour a most memorable one. Most of the 31 tourists were traveling to India for the first time.

Naturally, they were apprehensive but when someone who was part of the tour party that had gone to India over 7 times before, his words of advice were enough to put them at ease. In addition, Dr Doodnauth Harrykissoon who lives in Texas and is an author also advised the tourists to have an open mind and discover India for themselves. That was Dr Doodnauth’s and his wife’s (Sukhranie) second trip to India.

The tour director Mr Ramesh D Kalicharran had to break with tradition for this trip. His farewell function for the tourists that is normally held at the JFK Airport was held instead at Fairfield Pavilion, Richmond Hill, New York. That program was graced by former Miss India USA and former Miss Bollywood Diva, Shivangi Maini, who told the tourists of the rich culture and diversity of India and the numerous things they could learn from that experience. Mr Kali invited 6 of the tourists to light the ceremonial torch which is supposed to make the impending journey beautiful and memorable.

Drupattie Ramlal, on her first trip to India, said it was very exciting and that she loved Rishikesh and the Ganges the most.

“The bath in the Ganges was so calm and serene.”

Nandanie Singh captures the mood and feelings of the tourists:“It is with gratitude and sincere appreciation for your expertise, talent and knowledge that you all were able to make a dream become a reality. For the past 29 years since Paul and I got married, visiting our motherland was on our bucket list. You all made this a reality and one that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

On the 2nd day I felt that my trip was already paid for when I entered the Akshardham Temple. It brought tears to my eyes and at that moment I knew I was there before.

“On day # 3, just witnessing the Ganga Artie, I knew I was home and that didn’t end there. After being privileged to bathe in the Ganges and perform Puja at the banks of the Ganges, then able to perform sewa to the underprivileged in giving food and money, I was truly humbled. On behalf of the entire group of Kali Bharat Yatra I want

to say our sincere thanks and gratitude to all of you for making this dream become a reality. I look forward to visiting India again, but in the mean time we will be working with you on the Europe trip in June. I will be calling you Uncle Kali.

The consensus of opinion was that the visit to Rishikesh, regarded as the Meditation Center of India, was their best experience. Not even their sail on the serene Lake Pichola could match the peace and tranquility of Rishikesh. But there were other major tourists’ attractions.

While some tourists went shopping, a few dropped in to see the legendary actor Manoj Kumar who is not too well but who still decided to welcome them at his home in Mumbai. Manoj Kumar excelled in “Bharat Ka Rehene Wala Hoon” by Padmashri Mahendra Kapoor and epitomized in the film “Purab aur Paschim.” In 1992, Shri Manoj Kumar was honoured with the ‘Padmashri’ by the Government of India.

Mr Ramesh D Kalicharran took the opportunity to present Manoj Kumar with a plaque on October 30, 2014.

The tourists were greeted with an October surprise when they had the good fortune to meet with Arjune, Purvi and Abha of the popular Indian soap opera, Pavitra Rishta.

Actress Varsha Usgaonkar , who was accompanied by her husband, Ajay Sharma (film producer & Director) rendered a few songs while she had a movie, “Super Nanny” released the following day in which she appeared. Also at the farewell ceremony was Guyanese-born Nandani Sharan (wife of the late Shri Hari Om Sharan) who was presented with a Kali Bharat Yatra citation by Ramesh D Kalicharran and Nandanie Singh of Florida. The dancer Simiran, who appeared in a few films, also performed for the tourists at the farewell.

The live band was led by Mr Ashraf Khan.

Another surprise organized by kali-ji and his counterpart Dilip Sirwani of RTS erupted when Pandit Ashook Sharma was summoned to conduct a renewal of marriage vows (after 23 years) between Geeta Bisram and Vinod Bisram at Jaipur Palace.

Geeta and Vinod are from the popular Angels Caribbean Band. Renewing marriage vows is becoming fashionable in some communities. Geeta sang at the famous Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh and at the Jaipur Palace as well and at the Musical Farewell function in Mumbai.

Geeta Bisram expresses her gratitude: “I was accompanied by my husband Vinod Bisram and my mother Sainwantie Narine. Although I visited India in 2009, it was only for a spiritual retreat in Mt. Abu. On this Kali Bharat Yatra, I find this was an amazing tour, well planned, lots of sur-

The tour was beyond our expectation. “Gangadai Udeen says:” I cannot stop thinking about India. I cannot wait to spread the word around, to

Of course, our very own Geeta Bisram’s voice resonates the Parmarth Niketan with her bhajans. We felt proud of this honor. Diwali celebration was awesome. Memories of the ‘dip’ in the Ganges still lingers on.”

Kali in the company of Cricketers, Venkatesh Prashad, Praveen Kumar among others let everyone know how much I enjoyed India. Everything was well organized, the hotel, transportation, music evenings, and of course the destinations were very appealing. Above all, Akshardham is a must for every traveler to experience. “ Kushieram Chetram observes: ” My wife Bowmatte could not have expected better. In fact, the India that Kali-ji showed us is beyond our expectation” while Rajkumar Samaroo believes “ Kali-ji put up a perfect tour. The other tourists were very good , the tour guide Sunil was excellent , he made everyone feel at home. I have no complaint whatsoever. Rather, my wife Chanderdai and I must compliment the quality of the tour.” Other words of praise for the tour come from Prabhu Dutt, who had visited India in 1992. He found now that India is more populated and is also amazed at the huge buildings being erected with bamboo as scaffold. He remarked, “Kali-ji has very good connections in India and apparently this makes his tour very

The tourists visited the Taj Mahal the eighth wonder of the world in Agra, Mathura the birth place of Lord Krishna, Akshardham the unique wonder of the world ,the Jama Masjid in Delhi, Rishikesh & Haridwar by the Ganges , Lake Pichola in Udaipur, Jaipur the pink capital of the desert kingdom in Rajasthan , Fatehpur Sikri the capital of the great Mughal Emperor Akbar and Mumbai the Bollywood of India. Queens Travel Agencies Robbed, Employees Zip-Tied In Likely Related Incidents

Travel agency employees terrorized by robbery

ZONE PARK, N.Y. (WABC) Police are looking for suspects in two robberies, both involving travel agencies in Queens, that they believe are linked.

The most recent incident happened Wednesday, around 11 a.m., at the Crown Travel Agency located on 118th Street in Ozone Park.

Two men, one armed with a gun, entered the business and zip-tied the victims before demanding that the two

employees open the safe.

“I couldn’t think,” victim Zenifer Mohammed said. “I was just scared. I guess, numb.”

Mohammed says it was a terrifying few minutes that felt like forever when she and co-worker Michelle Sukhnanan were tied up, hands behind them, and told not to face the suspects. The NYPD released photos of the men that they hope will lead to arrests.

“He just kept telling me, face the

wall,” Sukhnanan said. “And turn around and don’t look at him.”

The workers say the two men had come to the travel agency the day before to say they were looking into a trip to Trinidad, and police say the same exact type of robbery occurred at a Liberty Travel in Howard Beach the Friday before.

Surveillance photos of the suspects in that case show what appears to be at least one suspect who is wearing the same clothing as in Ozone Park robbery. In the Howard Beach incident, six employees were tied up.

Mohammed and Sukhnanan kept telling the suspects they didn’t know the combination to the safe, but that didn’t stop them from ripping out the surveillance and stealing whatever they could.

“They took off my necklace, cash in my wallet,” Sukhnanan said. “So they took everything.”

In the first robbery, the suspects were able to gain access to the safe, making off with an undetermined amount of money, as well as the employees’ phones and cash.

There were no reported injuries in either incident.

ai Sita Ram, My name is Kevin Heeralall and I am a blessed and honored member of the Naujaavn Mandalee Youth Group of The Shaanti Bhavan Mandir. What is going on in this world today? Instead of taking full advantage of the gift of life people are out there stealing, murdering, and manipulating others into selfish deeds of sin. This whole world is full of corruption. And to make matters worse on this point, we live in the vast world of social media. We went from kids fighting for crayons, and not smiling in pictures to kids begging for iphones and posing on instagram and facebook like they are 18 when they are merely 13. Kids need to understand that their duty as the young and uprising generation is to challenge corruption.

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

However, as stated above how can one reach their true potential if society is full of turmoil? Simple! Infuse your life with immediate action, don’t wait for a miracle to happen, make it happen. Make our own future, your own hope and your own love. And whatever your belief is, honor your creator; not by passively waiting for grace to come down from the heavens, but by doing what you can to make grace happen...yourself, right now, right down here on earth. It is in your moment of decision that your destiny is shaped. Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it’s the basis of a dynamic and creative intellectual mind. Our mission in life should not be merely to survive, but to thrive, and do so with strong passion, some compassion, some humor and some style.

All of this does not happen overnight, it all starts from our roots. As stated before, this day in age everyone knows everything at anytime. Parents must start strong proper parenting from a young age. Key word is proper by that I mean parents must understand their child and grow along them with that guidance to sway them in the right way. This is because words, especially when yelled in anger, can be very damaging to a child’s self-confidence. The child probably already feels bad enough just from seeing the consequences of his or her behavior. Our sons and daughters don’t need more guilt and self-doubt heaped upon their already wounded ego. Kids, this does not mean that parents should not yell or give punishments, however a simple talk and communication goes far. At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.

The urge to be creative, to unleash our inner passion and determination, and remember our roots, is too allow our body both mentally and physically to make strives to change the world of corruption.

We need to start by changing ourselves.

God is the key to life, and when we face difficulty we must go to him. We must change our minds and go to the places where his name is chanted. However, when people go to mandir their minds are not focused on the teaching and the chanting. Their minds are only begging for the service to end. Yet when they are at a night club the night before, they party all night long and pay hundreds of dollars for the dj and bartender to keep going. This is why we need to start making changes to fix and put our world on the right path.

Former CIBC First Caribbean banker, Michael Mansoor, has died

Chief executive officer Rik Parkhill paying tribute to the Trinidadian said when the history of the financial institution is written, Mansoor will “certainly feature as one of the builders of the banking industry, one of the scholars of the region, and one of the great orators to address the Senate of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

ctresses Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra's cousin Mannara, who is making her Bollywood debut in "Zid", says she is here to act and not to become a showstopper or a glam doll.

"There is lot of expectation with your first film but I am a kind of a person who doesn't keep any expectations. But, the kind of response we have been receiving for our work is humbling. It feels good when you get such a warm welcome from the industry," said the actress.

"As an actress, whatever will be challenging for me I will do it. I am here to act and not to be a show stopper or a glam doll.

If you are an actor you have to portray the character given to you," she added.

wo legends of Indian cinema – megastar Amitabh Bachchan and superstar Rajinikanth – will share the dais at the opening ceremony of the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held at Goa Nov 20-30.

Newly-inducted Minister of State, Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore Tuesday announced that Amitabh will attend the fest as the chief guest, while Rajinikanth will be conferred with Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year.

"IFFI 2014 would provide opportunities to showcase the variety of the festival in its various formats to facilitate co-operation in the film sector," Rathore said in a statement.

The fest would screen 179 films from 75 countries across different categories which include World Cinema (61 films), Masterstrokes (11 films), Festival Kaleidoscope (20 films), Soul of Asia (7 films), Documentaries (6 films), and Animated Films (6 films).

Besides, the Indian Panorama section would include 41 feature and non-feature films. The northeast being the focus

region of the festival, IFFI 2014 would be showcasing 7 films from there.

"The President" directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf will be the opening film of the fest, while "The Grandmaster" by Wong Kar-wai, who will receive the lifetime achievement award, would be the closing film.

Retrospective sections on Gulzar and Jahnu Baruah, special homage films on Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Zohra Sehgal, Suchitra Sen, and special tribute to Farooq Sheikh would be other attractions this year.

A special section of films that focus on dance, personality based retrospectives, and Masterclasses/workshops would also form a part of IFFI 2014.

"She complained of breathlessness.

Eight killed in two localities near Colombia-Venezuela border

ight men, including five Colombians, have been murdered in two Venezuelan towns bordering Colombia for reasons not yet known, the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Luis Eladio Perez has said.

The killings apparently occurred Sunday.

Five of the victims were identified as Colombians, while the other three were in the process of identification, Perez told Efe on Monday, without providing further details.

The Venezuelan newspaper La Verdad on Sunday was the first to report the murder of the eight men executed in two different incidents in the state of Zulia, in western Venezuela.

According to the newspaper, the six men were shot to death and their bodies were found in an area known as Cano Motilon.

The same source also added that two other men, killed with knives, were found in the village of Mata de Coco, also in the

K state of Zulia.

So far, no Venezuelan authority has provided information on the murders.

Last March, in a similar incident at the Colombia-Venezuela border, five Colombians were shot by unknown assailants in the Venezuelan town of Urena in Tachira.

Venezuela shares with Colombia a border of more than 2,200 kilometers (1,367 miles) in which different organizations linked to smuggling, drug trafficking, guerrilla groups, paramilitaries and kidnappers operate.

Irish firm Tullow chosen for oil exploration in Jamaica

RISH firm Tullow Oil plc is expected to be announced this morning as the company selected by the Jamaican Government to engage in oil and gas exploration here.

Tullow, which operates in 21 countries, is expected to conduct three-dimensional exploration which, Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) sources said, will provide better information regarding the existence of oil in Jamaican waters.

Yesterday, Tullow Oil's Head of Media Relations George Cazenove was non-committal in response to a Jamaica Observer query on Sunday seeking confirmation of his firm's involvement in Jamaica.

"Thank you for your query," he responded via e-mail. "Alas, I am not able to comment on your story."

For some years now Jamaica has been trying to find out whether fossils detected offshore are enough for commercial extraction.

Of the previous exploration ventures, the most promising was from Canadian firm Sagres Energy, which said it detected possible reserves of some three billion barrels off Pedro Cay. The PCJ, in its media advisory on today's announcement, pointed out that it has been aggressively pursuing proven explorers to undertake oil and gas exploration and that these efforts have borne fruit.

Jamaican on bank robbery charges in NY freed

INGSTON, Jamaica – A Jamaican man was handed a not guilty verdict for charges in a 1993 bank robbery described as the largest heist in Nassau County, Long Island, New York.

According to US media reports 42-year-old Claude Bird of a New York address was acquitted of six armed robbery charges in connection with a theft of US$241,000 from the European American Bank in Lake Success, Nassau.

Prosecutors had claimed Bird escaped from a Jamaican jail, but his attorney, Toni Marie Angeli argued that a judge in the Caribbean released him after US authorities failed to say when Bird would be extradited, reports on examiner.com said.

Jamaicans jailed, fined millions over attempt to smuggle ganja

wo Jamaican nationals, who attempted to smuggle compressed marijuana into Guyana, were yesterday both jailed and ordered to pay a total of over $40 million in fines after being found guilty of the crime.

Benjamin Carrington, 27, and Tamara Douglas, 31, were charged with possession of narcotics for drug trafficking, after almost 28 grammes of marijuana was found in their luggage when they landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri on April 21. They both had pleaded not guilty.

At the conclusion of their trial in Georgetown, Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday sentenced Carrington to 60 months imprisonment and fined him $23,181,000, while she sentenced Douglas to 54 months imprisonment and fined her $18,000,408.

Carrington, a vendor from Kingston, Jamaica had been found with 15.454 kilogrammes of cannabis, while Douglas, a hairdresser from Portland, Jamaica, had in her possession 12.272 kilogrammes of marijuana.

Both arrived in Guyana via Fly Jamaica flight OJ153 but they were subsequently detained. According to the police’s case, the cannabis was discovered when personnel running the luggage scanner at the airport noticed a block-like object at the bottom of both suitcases. The owners of the luggage were asked to identify themselves, at which point the duo came forward. A search of the luggage was then carried out in front of the two passengers and the illegal substance was discovered in both suitcases. The cannabis was concealed in transparent plastic bags at the bottom of the luggage.

Man wanted for murder in UK extradited

amaican, Loandre Palmer, has been extradited to the United Kingdom and charged with murdering a teenager in Nottingham.

The Nottinghamshire Police in the UK partnered with local law enforcers in September and offered a J$1million reward for Palmer’s capture.

He was later apprehended for his involvement in the death of 19-year-old Malakai McKenzie, who was shot outside a pub in Sherwood Nottingham in April 2012.

Another suspect in the case, Cameron Cashin, was found guilty of McKenzie’s

murder in June last year and is currently serving a life sentence.

The King of Pop’s estate continued to rake in more money than most living celebrities, with earnings of a whopping US$140 million this year.

New strain of Chikungunya in Brazil could spur North American outbreak

lose up a Mosquito sucking human blood_set A-2BAHIA, Brazil, Wednesday November 12, 2014 (AMG) — The Chikungunya outbreak which continues to affect thousands of Caribbean residents since it first appeared in St. Martin last year has been relatively self-limiting in the United States, due to the fact that the current strain only spreads through the Aedes egypti mosquito vector, which is uncommon on the US Eastern seaboard.

But recent diagnoses of a new viral strain in Brazil may turn the current hemispheric spread of the crippling disease on its head. The strain – which is prevalent in some African states and which has been the cause of several outbreaks in South-east Asian countries – readily infects the Aedes albopictus mosquito, a hardier species which is common along the US East Coast, and which is adapted to colder climates.

Brazil has recorded over 200 cases of Chikungunya – predominantly in the country’s east-coast Bahia state – but according to Kansas State University virologist Stephen Higgs, the African strain in Brazil has not yet developed the type of dangerous mutations observed in Southeast Asia.

Such mutations could make the strain up to 100 times more infectious to mosquitoes, says Higgs, allowing the vectors to become more easily infected and pass the virus on to humans. The virus itself has been shown to develop rapid adaptive mutations, underscoring fears of eventual epidemic circulations of the new strain.

With the Brazilian summer beginning next month, increased rains may create more favourable breeding conditions for mosquitoes and facilitate the spread of the new strain, but local transmission of any imported cases in the US may be mitigated by the approaching winter months in North America.

Should the new strain become established in the United States, however, the significant spread of the Aedes albopictus poses risks for a US East Coast replay of the Caribbean’s current Chikungunya outbreak.

In October, a tracklisting of the album surfaced online and caused a sensation, although it is not clear if it was legitimate.

The listing featured a song entitled “Real Talk,” which is reportedly a collaboration with the superstar’s onagain, off-again Canadian boyfriend Drake.

Calvin Harris, who corroborated on one of Rihanna’s megahits “We Found Love,” has confirmed that he will not feature in the forthcoming album.

“I did a few things for it, but they don’t get back to you. There are a lot of people involved,” he told Britain’s Sun newspaper.

“She listens to everything – I know that – but she’s got a strong idea and identity and an idea of what her album should sound like,” Harris added.

Some reports suggest that the new album could drop as soon as 25 November, and will feature another collaboration with “Monster” rapper Eminem.

DDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Tuesday November 11, 2014 – Against the backdrop of thousands of deaths as Ebola continues its rampage in West Africa, some of the continent’s leading businessmen have established a crisis fund to help the countries worst hit by the deadly virus.

At a pledge meeting held over the weekend in Addis Ababa, the business executives raised US$28.5 million to deploy at least 1,000 health workers to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

According to Strive Masiyiwa, the chairman of telecommunications giant Econet Wireless, several companies had pledged money to the emergency fund, which will be managed by the African Development Bank.

At the end of the meeting, African Union Chairman Dlamini Zuma said the resources mobilised would be part of a longer term programme to deal with such outbreaks in the future.

The meeting took place as the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) warned that Ebola was still on the rise in Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The international charity nevertheless reported a reduction in the number of new cases in Liberia, the country with the heaviest death toll from the epidemic to date.

It is not known why the number of cases in Liberia has slowed, but Chris Stokes, head of MSF’s Ebola response, said the disease could “flare up” again, pointing to Guinea, where the number of cases is rising again despite two significant lulls.

Meanwhile, the international campaign group African Governance Initiative (AGI), while reporting that Ebola cases were rising “frighteningly quickly” in Sierra Leone, says it is not sure why cases are levelling off in Liberia.

The international organisation nevertheless said that “burial management” has improved significantly in both Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Liberia’s government has also been running an awareness campaign, advertising the best health practices and installing hand washing stations across the country.

UN Ebola coordinator Dr David Nabarro expressed cautious optimism about the apparent slowing of the rate of infection in Liberia, but cautioned that authorities “do not always have timely production of full data,” and warned that “reduction in the rate of infection does not mean that the outbreak is under control.”

And despite significant contributions from Cuba, the United States, Britain, China and other countries, the head of the UN mission charged with fighting Ebola says more help is urgently needed.

TLANTA, United States, Sunday November 9, 2014, CMC – The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that the chikungunya outbreak in Caribbean and Central and South American countries continues to spread with no sign of slowing down.

According to the CDC “the painful mosquito-borne disease will likely continue to infect travelers to the region during the rest of this year and beyond”.

The outbreak, which began last December, has caused an estimated 795,000 chikungunya cases in 37 countries and territories in the Western Hemisphere as of the end of October, said CDC in its latest update.

It said more than 1,600 travelers returning to the United States with chikungunya have been reported, as of November 4.

Before this outbreak, CDC said an average of 28 travelers with chikungunya fever returned to the United States each year.

CDC estimates that about 9 million people travel between the United States and Caribbean each year.

“During fall and winter, people in the United States might not be thinking about mosquitoes as a risk for diseases.

So those who will be visiting the Caribbean or Central or South America should be aware of the risk of chikungunya in these areas this fall and winter and remember their insect repellent and other tips for staying safe,” it said in a statement.

Dr. Roger S. Nasci, chief of CDC’s Arboviral Diseases Branch, said the beginning of fall means that mosquito problems in the continental United States will be decreasing.

“However, travelers to areas where the chikungunya outbreak continues are at risk of becoming infected,” he cautioned.

“It is important that travelers understand these risks and take appropriate actions to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes.”

The CDC said preventing mosquito bites is the best way to avoid chikungunya and other mosquito-borne illnesses, adding that the mosquitoes that spread chikungunya bite mostly during the daytime.

CDC has advised travelers in high-risk groups to discuss their travel plans with their health care provider before leaving.

final onslaught bookended a great opening stand to power Bangladesh to 503 all out on the second day of the third Test. But Zimbabwe began their reply firmly too, ending up on113 for one at stumps with Sikandar Raza and Hamilton Masakadza on unbeaten fifties.

Zimbabwe have more than just a fair distance to cover to remain competitive in the game but that didn’t stop Raza and Masakadza, who said before the game that they would go all out for the win, to go after the Bangladesh bowling and pick up easy boundaries.

Raza was unbeaten on 54 off 65 balls, having struck nine boundaries. He was severe against anything pitched in his half by Shafiul Islam and Taijul Islam, and used his feet very well against the spin. He drove the ball with confidence though there were moments when he looked slightly like losing control while attacking the spinners. This was Raza’s third Test fifty, and it complemented the surprising role he had played with the ball in picking up three wickets.

Masakadza also reached his sixth half-century, off 71 balls. He played a relatively subdued role, but still struck seven fours and one six, a big hit over midwicket off Shakib Al Hasan.

Rubel picked up the only wicket of the day for Bangladesh, getting Brian Chari to thinly edge one to the keeper in the second over. The decision, initially given not out, had to be reviewed by Mushfiqur Rahim and he was proved right as the third umpire heard or saw something that amounted to an edge. This continued Rubel’s great day after he had hammered four sixes towards the end of the Bangladesh innings.

Rubel’s unbeaten career-best 45, coming off 44 balls with four sixes through midwicket and two fours, took the score past the 500-run mark. He shared a 51run tenth wicket stand with Jubair Hossain, who was the final wicket to fall, in the 154th over.

Bangladesh scored exactly 200 runs on day two but their scoring rate wasn’t as impressive as it had been on the first day.

Shakib Al Hasan’s 17th Test fifty, 71 off 110 balls, helped them consolidate losses in the middle-order. He struck seven boundaries, a couple of drives through cover and mid-off and two dinks through and over midwicket among them.

Instead, they are withdrawing their support of the Dainty administration and are calling for all leagues to reject the proposed changes that are up for a vote at the coming weekend’s AGM. “If people were to read the document, there are some very disturbing elements in that document,” Glasgow told ESPNcricinfo. “The administration banks on the apathy of the leagues to get certain things through because a lot of people would not have read that document. If people approve that document, you’re going to have six more years of Dainty and company. I never thought I’d be saying this but we just can’t afford to have that for cricket. Cricket will surely die in this country by then.”

Among the proposals put forth by a governance review conducted last year

by TSE Consulting, were to cut down the total size of the board while adding independent directors to make up 50% of the administration, which would greatly reduce the current board’s power. Other recommendations were for athlete representatives to be added to make up 20% of the board and term limits be established.

Instead, USACA is proposing to increase the number of people on the board while also reducing the number of proposed independent directors. Term limits would not be applied retroactively and the executive board member positions of president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer would no longer be voted on by all member leagues but would only be decided by a consolidated voting panel of 11 other board members.

Mollineau said that although he considers Dainty a friend, he thinks the time has come for different administrators to have a chance after more than a decade under Dainty’s leadership.

“I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel with the current administration,” Mollineau said. “I can’t stay involved if Dainty remains. This administration isn’t taking cricket in the right direction.

There’s no vision and this constitution has nothing to help the development of the game. It is only revised to ensure the current board remains in power.

“It goes completely against what the TSE governance recommendations were and takes away any voting rights from the leagues. I can’t deal with this. I’ll take it to

Glasgow acknowledges he was one of Dainty’s biggest supporters during the last USACA election in 2012, but that recent events have made him rethink his stance on the current administration. He says he had hope that the administration would turn a corner and demonstrate progress if given enough time, but based on USA’s recent relegation to WCL Division Four, he no longer has faith that things will improve unless someone else takes charge.

“I was fully supportive of the current administration, there’s no question about that,” Glasgow said. “What I do not support is the non-improvement. There’s no vision there for cricket. I was optimistic that after several failures people would learn from their mistakes and their experience would have benefitted the sport.

That has not happened. We keep doing the same things over and over. If you look at progress and use the national team as a yardstick, it’s not so much that we fail or lose. It is the lack of preparation, the way teams are selected, the way selectors are appointed. It’s ridiculous.”

England may miss KP’s best years - Morgan T he absence of Kevin Pietersen from the England team is “terribly sad” according to Eoin Morgan.

Morgan, who has captained the England limited-overs sides on several occasions, suggested Pietersen could have “his best years ahead of him” and said he would “love to be there playing cricket for England” with him.

“It’s great having played with Kev and having in the team and learning from him,” Morgan said.

“It’s terribly sad that he’s not in the team at the moment considering he’s still so young and had potentially his best years still ahead of him.

“I would love to be out here playing cricket for England with Kevin Pietersen but the fact of the matter is he’s not involved anymore.”

While he accepted that Pietersen was not universally popular within the England camp, Morgan dismissed the importance of such factors and insisted it was more relevant that players performed on the pitch.

“Not everyone is popular in a cricket team,” Morgan said. “Everyone individually commands respect through their performance and there is trust and relationships that you build.

“But that’s absolutely fine. In every

walk of life you make friends with people who other people aren’t friends with.

Was it awkward being friends with him?

Certainly not.”

When asked whether Pietersen’s accusation of bullying within the England environment - a claim made in Pietersen’s recent book - was fair, Morgan was non-committal. While admitting that he had yet to read the book - “I’ve heard it’s brilliant,” he said with a smile - he accepted that there were times when the bowlers’ frustration with fielders had been obvious. But he insisted he “can’t remember if it went too far or not.”

“You’re certainly aware of things like that particularly when you don’t bowl and you’re a specialist fielder,” he said.

“It’s a difficult one because you have a bowler who had maybe been hit for four or a catch dropped and it’s hard for him to disguise his emotion. There a bit of give and take with both sides.

“I can’t remember if it went too far or not. The issue was raised and it was dealt with.”

ohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan allrounder, has been reported for suspect action after the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

Hafeez will have to undergo the tests within the next 21 days as per the ICC regulations and can continue to bowl in international cricket until the results of the tests are announced.

Hafeez was part of the Pakistan side that recently thumped Australia, bowling 63 overs in the two-Test series, and went on to bowl a further 22 overs in the first Test against New Zealand. The match officials handed over the report to the Pakistan team manager, Moin Khan.

Hafeez has become the second Pakistan bowler in the recent months to have

come under ICC’s scanner. It had been Akshar, however, who made the most telling play of the game, taking a wicket in each of his three Powerplay overs to gut the visitors’ middle order. As has been the case throughout the series, it was his fluctuations in pace that vexed Sri Lanka.

Angelo Mathews had appeared settled when the Powerplay was called for in the 31st over. He had reverse-swept R Ashwin powerfully for four a few balls before, but was slow on the pull as Akshar skidded one through and the top edge looped to cover.

Akshar’s flat, fast deliveries in the next over kept Ashan Priyanjan scoreless for four balls, before the mistake was induced. The batsman aimed a heave over mid-on, but managed only to hit it to Yadav, who took a diving catch. Chaturanga de Silva, playing this match instead of Suraj Randiv, attempted to carve Akshar over cover in the final over of the Powerplay. When he found the fielder, Sri Lanka had slipped from 144 for 3 to 154 for 6. Thisara Perera’s wicket two overs later, embedded them in further strife.

Even before the crumble in the Powerplay, Jayawardene had to launch a rescue effort alongside Tillakaratne Dilshan. The pair rebuilt sagely from 7

Dilshan scrambled a fifty, but Jayawardene’s next four partners lasted 11.2 overs put together, and soon, having lost faith in his team-mates, Jayawardene was turning down singles into the

outfield as early as in the 38th over.

Seekkuge Prasanna was put down by Suresh Raina in the slips on 0 and provided Jayawardene slightly better company after that, sticking around for a partnership of 67 before Jayawardene was stummped of an Ashwin top-spinner. The innings would soon wipe out in the 49th over, with about 60 fewer runs on the scoreboard than what might have made for an interesting chase on a flat Hyderabad pitch.

Bowlers meeting expectations of nation - Misbah

isbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, credited his side’s bowlers following their 248-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test in Abu Dhabi. The victory was Pakistan’s third successive one in the UAE and came soon after they had thumped Australia 2-0.

The most experienced bowler in Pakistan’s line-up was Mohammad Hafeez, and the most experienced specialist bowler was Rahat Ali, who was playing his ninth Test. Misbah said it was commendable that a largely inexperienced attack had thrived on surfaces where more experienced bowlers had struggled.

“The kind of conditions we are getting, the world-class bowlers are struggling but these youngsters are living up to the expectations of the team, me and the whole nation,” Misbah said. “They are getting 20 wickets every match. So that’s a really big achievement for them.

“You can’t say these are spinning tracks and that’s why we are getting wickets. The fast bowlers are really chipping in and they are doing a wonderful job. These are the same pitches where the top-class bowlers are struggling.”

Misbah praised left-arm fast bowler Rahat Ali, who finished with a six-wick-

et haul in the game. Rahat’s 4 for 22 in the first innings was vital to keeping New Zealand to 262 and came after he had taken only four wickets in the series against Australia.

The win made Misbah Pakistan’s most successful Test captain and he said he was honoured to be in the company of legendary cricketers like Imran Khan and Javed Miandad.

“It sounds great, because you could say the names - Imran Khan, Javed Miandad those are the greats of Pakistan. But if I am at the top, it’s something I could not really think of,” Misbah said. “It’s great to know that. I am happy about that.”

Despite the huge margin of victory, Misbah refused to call it an easy win and said he was mostly happy because the team had not squandered momentum from the 2-0 series win against Australia.

“I think overall nothing is easy but it looked easy at the end. But you could say the team really played well, every individual held on to his responsibility and we stuck to our basics. We performed really well, like we performed against Australia, so we just kept that momentum and those performances intact. That was the key for us - that at the end, it looked easy. But nothing is easy in life and especially in cricket.”

West Indies name full-strength Test squad

enesh Ramdin has been retained as captain of a full-strength West Indies Test squad for their upcoming tour of South Africa, but the players have been given a deadline of November 18 to sign tour contracts. The squad is the first to be named since West Indies walked out of their tour of India last month due to a pay dispute between the players, the WICB and the West Indies Players’ Association.

“Of course at all times the selection panel aims to select the best and strongest team available,” chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd said. “We look forward to this squad giving a good account of themselves for the three Tests in South Africa.

“There is a significant amount of international cricket to be played over the next six months, including Test matches against some of the higher ranked teams in world cricket and as such it would be critical for the squad to get off on a positive note in South Africa.

“Specifically we have selected young fast bowlerSheldon Cottrell who is a good prospect. The selection panel is looking to introduce players such as Cottrell who can contribute in moving West Indies cricket forward.”

The three Tests are scheduled for Centurion, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town from December 17 through to January 6.

ohit Sharma’s first ODI in 10-weeks began with a touch of nerves. He was even kept scoreless in one Angelo Mathews maiden. By the end of the innings, his batting had become cartoonish. There was no shot he had not played. No part of the ground he had not exploited. No bowler who escaped his brutality. Rohit amassed 45 more runs than any ODI batsman had ever managed in an innings, finishing on 264 from 173 balls when he was finally caught off the last ball of the innings. India, almost incidentally, had moved to 404 for 5, despite having travelled at a run rate of less than six for the first 32 overs.

Rohit’s innings was so ludicrous that the first 100 runs, which were hit at a run-a-ball, seems achingly humdrum in comparison to the 164 that followed.

The surge had actually begun before he reached his century, when he plundered 14 runs in four balls, in Nuwan Kulasekara’s 30th over. Soon after that, the ball would be leaping off the middle of his bat with almost every stroke he offered.

There were many incredible shots, from among his 33 fours and nine sixes, but the most gobsmacking was the six off Kulasekara at the end of the 48th over, when he walked across to off stump, took a half volley from about a foot and half away from him and flicked it high over the midwicket boundary. It was the kind of shot, and innings, that seemed in open defiance of physics.

Sri Lanka had played a tour match against Mumbai to warm-up for the series, but little did they know Rohit was warming-up against them. He hit 145 from 111 in that match - his first competitive game since fracturing a finger in August - and he has now re-embedded himself at the top of the India batting order in the most resounding fashion imaginable.

The most dispiriting aspect of the flogging for Sri Lanka was their complicity in it. Shaminda Eranga had extracted a thick outside edge from Rohit in the fifth over, and though the ball carried comfortably to Thisara Perera at third man, he shelled the chance. Having been dropped on 4, Rohit would become the third India centurion this series to have been reprieved early in his innings. It makes sense, then, that since he hit a double-century, he should be dropped twice. Seekkuge Prasanna obliged him, when he shelled another straightforward chance off Rohit in the 46th over, with the batsman on 201 this time.

Kulasekara had strayed too straight to Rahane, in particular, who picked him off for a spate of leg-side fours to kick the India innings into gear, in a 14-run first over. Angelo Mathews and Eranga delivered more disciplined new-ball

spells, claiming a wicket each inside the first 15 overs, but that is as good as the visitors’ bowling effort got. Sri Lanka’s lines and lengths worsened gradually from the 20th over onwards, until they had become almost farcical by the 35th over.

Another beautifully orchestrated batting Powerplay from India - between the 30th and 34th overs - brought them 67 runs, and was enough to hammer the Sri Lanka bowlers off their rhythm for the rest of the innings. Short, wide deliveries, thigh-high full tosses and rank long hops were presented with alarming regularity, and the fielding was almost as woeful. Sri Lanka had not expected to begin the series strongly, given their lack of preparation, but in these two disciplines, they have actually worsened significantly through the tour.

Having been joined at 59 for 2, Kohli and Rohit put on 202 brisk runs together, before miscommunication between the wickets saw Kohli run out for 66.

That wasn’t even the most astounding partnership of the India innings. When Rohit and Robin Uthappa came together in the 41st over, the score was 276 for 4.

They would put on 128 runs in 58 balls together. Out of that, Uthappa’s contribution was a run-a-ball 16.

By the time Rohit hit Kulasekara down Mahela Jayawardene’s throat at long-off, the record for most fours struck in an innings had also tumbled, and Rohit was in possession of half the ODI scores over 200. One record he missed out on by one delivery, was Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most balls faced. Gavaskar had made 36 not out.

Kusal Perera attempted to pull a short ball from way outside off stump and ended up scooping a catch to midwicket to collect his second duck of the series. Tillakaratne Dilshan was still visibly out of sorts, but he still outlived his next two partners. Dinesh Chandimal drove Stuart Binny uppishly to cover and Mahela Jayawardene was trapped in front by Umesh Yadav. When Dilshan himself fell, giving a catch to short cover off his leading edge, even the slim hopes Sri Lanka had of running down the total were effectively extinguished.

Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne forged a 118-run stand for the fifth wicket, with Mathews hitting 75 off 68, and Thirimanne making 59 upon his return to the side. But even as the batsmen progressed briskly by usual standards, the run-rate kept on climbing, until it was above 11, when the pair were separated in the 29th over. Thisara came in to bludgeon 29, scoring 23 of those off a Karn Sharma over. But the Powerplay came, and both he and Thirimanne fell to Kulkarni, within four balls, to usher in the tail. Kulkarni removed two more from the lower order to finish with 4 for 34, and India completed yet another crushing victory.
