When planning your wedding, choosing the right entertainer is one of the most important and memorable decisions you’ll make!

F

inding the right DJMC entertainer for your wedding may seem like a daunting task, but it really can be simplified if you ask the right questions. Many couples begin with a perceived budget, and sometimes that’s based on their experience hiring a DJ for a birthday or graduation party in the past. Using that as a point of comparison often leads to sticker shock.

Most couples don’t initially understand the amount of time, planning and logistics that go into a successful wedding.

Hopefully, I can shed some light and help navigate this process. More importantly, if I can help educate just one couple who avoids making a mistake or help turn one ordinary wedding into one that’s extraordinary, my mission will be complete.

The misconception that a DJ charges more “just because it’s a wedding” is not true. A less experienced DJ may get by doing an occasional wedding for less, but without wedding experience, the client will never know what they missed in terms of touching moments and lifetime memories that could have been created.

Music - continued from 16 The stakes are high. A wedding requires far more in terms of expertise and logistics. The time of year, level of talent, style and options requested will ultimately dictate price. These are important factors to understand before asking any DJ “what do you charge for weddings?” I make this point because it’s common on The Knot and other wedding sites for couples to randomly message multiple DJs inquiring about price with very few details and without the experience to know what else to ask to get a fair comparison.

If a DJ is in demand, chances are they’re doing something right. It takes hard work to develop and maintain the relationships that keep preferred vendors busy and that familiarity comes with a

higher price tag than someone starting out and offering much less.

Plus, which would you want for your wedding day?

No two weddings are exactly alike. Planning and preparation can vary greatly. One may be a simple three-hour cocktail reception requiring minimal prep, bringing a small sound system into a climate-controlled room with easy access. Another may be a prime Saturday in the height of wedding season, including multiple locations and a beach ceremony. This may require long trips carrying equipment through difficult soft sand in the heat of summer.

That seemingly quick “20-30 minute” beach ceremony can be exhausting in some locations. It adds two hours to

the day for a DJ and assistant between setup, providing battery power, testing specialized wireless equipment in the wind and sun, preparing prelude music as guests arrive and then coordinating the processional and recessional selections flawlessly from a distance, relying on hand signals from afar. Then a second sound system is setup for cocktails, typically on a patio, and a third, larger sound system is needed in a ballroom for dinner and dancing with 200 guests. Add decorative up-lighting, dance floor lighting, a personalized LED monogram with your initials in lights, photo booth and other effects and this becomes a full production and a 14-hour day, start to finish, for two people. Guests flow smoothly throughout the day, but behind the scenes, someone is working feverishly to ensure that the execution flows perfectly.

Without the benefit of this knowledge, prices can be confusing. One professionally handled wedding could be $1,200 and another could be four times that rate, closer to $5,000, offering many additional services. Sometimes there’s sticker shock and that’s understandable, but a professional who has dedicated a lifetime to their craft is worth the investment. They’re fully insured as required by most venues and available to

plan with you for months leading into your celebration. Most travel with $50,000 in equipment, a substantial, wellrounded music library that took years to curate, elaborate lighting and two cloned laptops to ensure backup. This cannot be compared to a hobbyist with minimal experience who shows up, ill-prepared, rushing from room to room on your wedding day.

I often ask potential clients two simple questions: How important is music and entertainment to you as a couple, and what vibe are you trying to achieve? Most feel that it’s very important and most want some, if not all the options available. That’s where the value of an experienced pro shines.

Entertainment is not a commodity, it’s a specialized service. Have you ever attended a wedding where the DJ was a dud? He or she sat most of the night, played all the wrong music, didn’t interact with the crowd, and many guests left early. That’s often a direct result of a client shopping solely by price, or one who didn’t understand what to ask when hiring an entertainer.

From your very first consultation to countless calls, eMail messages and multiple planning meetings, a professional will invest up to 20 hours on YOUR wedding. Then it’s time to create a detailed timeline and soundtrack that reflects your vision. In the business world, both price and value are considered when making a major investment. The same principles apply to planning a wedding. You’re planning one of the most important celebrations of your life and you owe it to yourself to choose wisely!

Extreme quotes, both high and low are analogous to retail shopping. Walmart and Macy’s have coexisted for decades.

Walmart is known as a budget option and there’s a place for them. The quality and service offered by Macy’s will cost more, but those customers understand value and have higher expectations.

Always remember, your entertainer will be front and center, as an extension of you as a couple. They’ll articulate every aspect of your celebration from formal introductions to your first dance and any traditions you choose. He or she will make recommendations from experience and communicate well with other key vendors, forming a team for the day. If you must cut corners to stay within a defined budget, it would be a mistake to skimp on something as important and memorable as your entertainment. We all hear horror stories being in the industry, but by then it’s too late.

Here’s why… In today’s digital age, entry into the industry is EASY. There’s no certification to use the title “DJ”. DJs are abundant, but not all are the same. Everyone has access to music, but not everyone has a polished presentation.

Everyone deserves a start, but on a day when it really matters, inexperience and low-grade equipment could place YOUR wedding at risk, subject to total failure.

One additional piece of important advice. There are many digital marketers who run online DJ and one-stop wedding sites from all over the globe.

This is not to be confused with the many great multi-op companies. Digital marketers offer deeply discounted DJ services and “bundles” with DJ-Photography and Video for ONE low price. Beware! They offer enticing prices, generic photos and fake numbers that appear local. They’re web marketers with SEO skills,

something seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Find someone local who comes with recommendations.

Someone you’re comfortable with after a conversation or two. Finding the right entertainer with the right credentials will make your wedding a stressfree, enjoyable experience.

Approaching this decision with an education, you’ll feel the connection when you find the right DJ for you. Another great source is your venue’s banquet manager. They work with MANY DJs on a weekly basis and they’ll know who is best for you. Finally, read ALL online reviews for anyone you are considering. Dig deep as they speak volumes.

When planning a wedding, it can be difficult to know what to ask or how to prepare. After all, you don't know what you don't know, right? With so many resources and opinions out there, who can you trust to ensure you're getting valuable information that will enhance your wedding experience and not the other way around? We have asked the area's top professionals to weigh in on real information to help your day go smoothly. There is no fluff here, no promotional angle, no sponsors, just beneficial tips and tricks from those who have made careers working with couples on their big day.

We are hitting all the major categories from photography to formal wear and everything in between. We hope this information helps your wedding planning experience and assists in creating your perfect day!

DJ / Entertainment

Photography

• Meet them face to face to get to know them. Your booking should be based on their personality as well as their talent. Confirm they fit your personality and vision for your day.

• Do they carry backup equipment? They should be prepared with backups just in case something goes wrong electronically.

• How often do they upgrade? Every 3-5 years is standard.

• Are they nickel and <liming you? Do your research on package pricing and what's included.

• Ask them to show you examples of what the setup will look like on your day. It should look clean and professional.

• Ask if the DJ will be a 1099 subcontractor or W2 permanent employee.

• Ensure your vendor carries the proper insurance and licensing.

• Ask how many weddings a year your lead photographer does each year (30-35 is the average minimum for a full-time professional.)

• Ask your photographer to see at least four full client galleries from the time of year you'll be getting married (around the same month and within the past year). Make sure they are the full galleries the client received and not blog posts - this is not the same! If you can see a full gallery from your venue, that's a bonus.

• Ask if the lead photographer will be a 1099 subcontractor or W2 permanent employee.

• Ensure your vendor carries the proper insurance and licensing.

• Ask about how they handle different lighting situations (inclement weather, after dark, indoors), and ask to see examples.

Videography

Hair & Make-up

• Ask how many weddings they do a year (25-30 is the average minimum for a full-time professional.)

• Ask what the guaranteed turnaround time is for the video(s) (not just a teaser), how the video(s) will be received, and in what resolution.

• See other full videos they have delivered from previous weddings. If you can see a video from your venue, that's a bonus.

• Ask about their lighting, make sure they have appropriate lighting that won't take away from your wedding, but enhance it.

• Ask about the quality of their equipment. Current industry standard is 4k cameras with 3-axis gimbals.

• Ask if the lead videographer will be a 1099 subcontractor or W2 permanent employee.

• Ensure your vendor carries the proper insurance and licensing.

• Make sure they specialize in bridal hair and makeup.

They should be licensed, certified, and insured.

• How many weddings do they do a year?, The minimum for professionals should be around 60-65 per year.

• How much time will it take to complete the bride and bridal party?

• How many individuals per artist? Make sure they have enough artists to support the size of your party.

• Ask about their products. They should carry a variety of hair and makeup products that are high quality and industry tried and tested.

• Don't skip out on your trial! It's the time to test out your wedding day look and work with your artist to ensure they get what you're going for and can accomplish it.

Dress/Formal Wear

• Aim to book your florist at least 9 months prior to your wedding date.

• It is always advised to meet them in their store. They should have a brick and mortar location • Your florist should have several large walk-in coolers to properly store flowers.

• Where are they getting flowers from? It should be from a quality wholesaler, not a produce outlet or store.

• Quality florists do not use any paints, sprays, or dyes that can, and will, drip on your dress, suit, or any formal wear, thus staining your wedding day attire.

• Sit down with them to see if you connect with them as a vendor. They should be able to provide quality examples of their work.

• There should be no fixed "packages" everything should be custom to your ideas. Make sure they get your vision!

• Do not order your dress online - go to a store to see sizes, colors, styles and material.

• Before you go, call and ask the price point of their dresses to see if it fits your budget.

• Don't be afraid to mention your budget when you go for an appointment.

• Ask if the bridal shop offers alterations and how they determine additional fees.

• Let them know your wedding date and to ensure they can accommodate your time frame.

Bakery

Wedding Planner

• Make sure you book with your baker at least 6 months out.

• It is common for venues to have contracts with in- house bakers.

• Meet them at their bakery so you can see the location inside and out. All food must be prepared in a commercially permitted and FDA approved and inspected kitchen.

Baking out of a home residence is not legal in NJ. • Talk with them about their experience in building and transporting your wedding cake.

• They should have consistent and quality work though the use of quality ingredients.

• They should he able to provide examples of their work and a tasting for you prior to your wedding day.

• Sit down and discuss what you're looking for with your baker so they get your vision.

• Check reviews and social media for previous clients experiences and up to date examples of their work.

• Ask how long they have been a wedding planner and how many weddings they plan each year.

Lose weight to improve your health and self esteem

t seems as though obesity and low selfesteem go hand and hand. Failed weight loss attempts contribute to the struggle. Losing weight allows us to experience improved selfesteem. Energy levels rise when we permit ourselves to feel good about ourselves.

Weight loss is more than your appearance. Shedding those pounds can do wonders for your health. Reducing your body weight by just 10 percent can lessen the risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The biggest perk though is the added energy and self-esteem that comes with losing weight.

Affirmations promote positive thinking. Affirm your choice to be

the healthiest and best you can be. Turn off the negative thoughts by putting positive affirmations in place each day. Tell yourself “I can and will achieve my weight loss goals.“ It all starts in the mind.

Support from friends and family is everything. Surround yourself with people who will have a positive impact on your weight loss journey. Choose to spend time with people who encourage you and help to build your self-esteem.

Keep in mind, self-esteem is different from self-confidence.

Confidence is related to a person’s ability in a particular area in their life. A person can be confident in their ability and still have low self-esteem. Achieving confidence doesn’t necessarily improve one’s self-esteem.

When you start to feel low, write down positive things about yourself. Maybe write down all

the great things you did to help someone in their struggles. You don’t have to be perfect every hour of every day. You don’t even have to feel good about yourself all the time. When you feel good, celebrate it. Eventually, this will become a habit and you will find your self-esteem has quietly gotten better.

It’s so much easier to feel good about ourselves when we are healthy and fit. People with low self-esteem often neglect themselves because they do not feel they “deserve” to be looked after.

Great music makes the wedding! Let’s get started…

ongratulations!

You’re engaged, you’ve picked the perfect location and hired all key vendors, including your DJ. Now it’s time to begin planning!

Music selection is such an important, yet personal part of every celebration. A professional DJ-MC will begin by creating a music profile. It starts with the client’s vision and the vibe they wish to create.

I personally start with the basics, asking both partners individually for their “Top 5”.

That’s not related to dancing.

It’s important to know who the top 5 artists are if each were to

be on vacation and limited to just 5 artists on their phone.

This brief exercise speaks volumes and I learn a lot about their taste, in general, within minutes.

Next is the vibe. NOT every client wants a high energy

dance party and a DJ would be remiss to make that assumption. Using South Jersey as an example, some clients want an afternoon cocktail party on the beach with food stations, no formal dinner hour, and just great background music

to create ambiance and take requests from guests. This type of client typically enjoys various beach themes from Reggae to Jimmy Buffett and any fun, summertime classics.

A great DJ doesn’t “make” people dance. We don’t force people into an awkward situation. Our role is to facilitate the right mood through music and create an ambiance for all to enjoy. There’s almost always dancing involved, but that’s predicated on choice and the DJ simply sets the right tone.

Music - continued from 28 by ranking each based on the couple’s preference. For example, some couples love country while others don’t.

Some love the line dances and an equal number request that they NOT be played. This is where we define boundaries.

Let’s start by compartmentalizing the event into hourly blocks. If there’s a ceremony, we need to decide on appropriate background music and processional/recessional selections, often leaning toward modern classical versions of today’s popular music. Artists like The Vitamin String Quartet and The Piano Guys are just two great examples here.

Next, we focus on cocktail hour. Traditionally this includes background pop, fingerpopping sing along hits and favorites of the couple that are not necessarily danceable, but

it’s music they want to hear. A similar approach is taken for dinner hour, but that typically leans toward love songs, ballads and some music that is appropriate for older guests.

Then, the post-dinner dancing begins… Keep in mind that typically, there’s just 2 to 2 ½ hours for an open dance floor. At an average of 3 minutes per song, that’s just 40-50 songs!

While your wedding should reflect your personal taste in music, part of being a gracious host includes catering to all your guests, at least for a portion of the evening. Depending on the crowd in attendance, perhaps a few ballads, some oldies or a little swing music is appropriate. Some early rock and roll or even a few classic rock hits can often bring out folks who wouldn’t have otherwise joined you on the dance

floor. A great entertainer will make the event uniquely yours, but they’ll also use some of their own intuition and expertise in programming to ensure that a great time is had by all!

Again, that’s up to the client who has the final say, but a professional will try to create the best mix possible for success. Once the night wears on and it’s just the die-hard party crowd, you can let loose a bit and turn on whatever you want to rock the crowd who remains with you.

There are three types of clients when it comes to music and I ask a few key questions to qualify each client before we begin planning.

The mainstream client.

They usually start the conversation with “We’ll have all ages at our wedding and just want fun music that everyone will dance to!” This type of client understands the dynamic of bridging the generation gap through an open format and they are generally easy going when it comes to planning. I can say with certainty that this type of format best allows the entertainer to use their creativity and intuition in programming the music, from Motown and Party Favorites of the 60s and 70s, to Disco, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, including todays dance hits that are wedding

appropriate.

Each decade has its own characteristics when it comes to music and once the format is identified, we go deeper. For example, a 30-year-old couple in 2022 was born in 1992. Their first introduction to music was likely the 90s sound and their influential teen years were the early 2000s. Looking at this timeframe in music, there were VERY different styles.

One couple may LOVE the boy bands of the 90s (Backstreet Boys, NSync, etc) and that usually goes well with the Spice Girls, Missy Elliott, Vanilla Ice, etc. Another couple who loves the “90s” Could want something VERY different, with taste in Indie and alternative rock, which is a category unto itself.

There are also interactive dances that must be discussed. Some clients LOVE the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, The Wobble and Cotton Eye Joe as they are party starters, but others prefer we NOT play them. It’s our job to ask the right questions in advance so we fully understand the client’s vision and deliver what they want.

The Indie / Alternative Couple. This type of client KNOWS what they want and

more importantly, what they do NOT want. Their taste in music may include Indie bands you’ve never heard of, but nonetheless, bands that have a tremendous following.

Mainstream groups such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Nirvana are usually all welcomed by this type of client, but we must ask, download a lot of unfamiliar music and study it to ensure it is programmed properly, whether specific songs are played during cocktails, dinner or dancing. This client’s taste in music is very different than a mainstream client and it’s our job to identify their taste, educate them on what will work, when and how. Being a full-time DJ entertainer, I’ll be honest. I used to cringe when I would see a playlist like this, but over the years, I’ve learned to expand my own horizons, learn the music and more importantly, how to integrate it into a program that will still please the majority of guests. It’s a challenge I welcome today and the satisfaction of pleasing this type of client is very rewarding as they appreciate the fact that you “get” their taste in music.

The EDM Couple. This is generally a couple who grew up in the higher tech nightclub dance scene. They love their beats and want the remixes

Much like the Indie client who loves underground bands, this type of client loves underground beats, creativity in the mix and even mashups that are popular today, taking classic hits and mashing them with current hits, all to a remixed beat.

There are many genres and styles of music and a true professional will have proficiency in most areas.

Intuitively, it’s about understanding the music and the audience in front of you, simultaneously bridging the gap between different cultures and generations. That’s the art of programming. Anyone can push play with a playlist in front of them, but that is not the art of a great DJ. Whether your profile resembles client number 1, 2 or 3 above, it is important to know that as the client, YOUR taste comes first. It’s also important to understand that a diverse group of guests from various generations and vastly different backgrounds will all have their own taste as they celebrate with you.

Our job is to educate, understand and deliver the perfect balance as our common goal should always be maximizing the fun and memories for the majority of your guests.
