Designing Selma's future SRA and UA partner to build a new vision of the Queen City BY FRED GUARINO Selma Sun Staff
Selma will soon have a precise vision for future redevelopment with the help of the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development. The center signed up to work with the recently renewed Selma Redevelopment Authority to design a plan for the authority to present to the city. Discussions start in a meeting set for June 3. The Selma Redevelopment Authority was reinstated in 2017 but lost several leaders, which stalled progress. Despite not having a director right now, Chairwoman Juanda Maxwell said the seven-member, all volunteer authority is "moving forward." The Authority held its monthly meeting on May 23 at Eyemax Vision, where they modified the mission statement to enhance "and improve" the downtown area both in community and retail support. It also added to its goals of planning, promoting, preserving, funding and forming special entities “to help existing businesses.” The Authority can borrow money, write and receive grants, charge rent and make loans. To date, the Authority has had a hand in several key projects in Selma. It was used as a conduit for the purchase and restoration of the St. James Hotel with an expected opening date in 2020. It received an ADECA grant of $75,000 for Wi-Fi in the downtown Selma area, which has been turned over to the city of Selma. It received a $40,000 grant from the Center on Rural Innovation to assess the viability of a digital economy based on digital computing technologies forthcoming in Selma. And it received a $25,000 grant (in-kind) from Design Alabama to bring architects, graphic designers and landscape architects to propose ideas to enhance the downtown

She said the Authority has plans to go before the Dallas County Commission on June 24 to request funds. And at its next meeting, they hope to offer incentives to businesses downtown to spruce up with
facade enhancements, as well as discuss the Opportunity Zone. An Opportunity Zone Subcommittee was formed with Harold Speir, Clint Wilkinson and Billy Young
as chairman. Participating in the May 24 meeting were Young, Wilkinson, Speir, Maxwell and Johnny Moss Jr. other Authority members are Johnny Moss III and Martha Lockett.

Gunnar Henderson, a star baseball standout at Morgan Academy, was named to an elite group with the honor of the Gatorade Alabama Baseball Player of the Year.
Morgan Academy's Gunnar Henderson is the 2018-19 Gatorade Alabama Baseball Player of the Year. The announcement, sent to Morgan Academy head baseball coach Stephen Clements on May 23, said that in receiving the honor, Henderson "is now part of a 30-year legacy" that includes past winners such as Peyton Manning, who played 18 season for the Indianapolis Colts; Abby Wambach, American retired soccer player, coach and two-time Olympic gold medalist; KarlAnthony Towns, of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves; and
Derek Jeter, who spent his entire 20-year MLB playing career with the New York Yankees. The Morgan Academy Auburn University baseball scholarship signer helped lead the Senators to a 30-2 record and runner up for the AISA Class AAA State Baseball Championship. He had a .554 batting average, hitting 11 home runs, 17 doubles, nine triples and 75 RBIs while scoring 69 runs. He got 56 hits in 101 opportunities at the plate and stole 31 bases. Henderson said, "It is just a huge honor being considered one of the top athletes in the state. I just want to thank all my teammates and my coaches and
my family for all helping me get there, and just want to thank God, as well to bless me with the ability to receive such an honor." He said he is looking forward to Auburn with two of his Morgan Academy teammates, including his cousin Brayton Brown and David DuCote. Henderson said that along with the Gatorade honor he will receive a trophy, a banner and $1,000 to donate to a charity of his choice, which he is currently narrowing down. Clements said of Henderson's selection, "What a huge accomplishment for an amazing young man. I am so excited for Gunnar and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him."
Clements also said, "Gatorade Player of the year is one of the most prestigious awards out there, and they could not have chosen a better young man than Gunnar, and that's both on and off the field." He said Henderson has high morals, a great work ethic and, "His athletic ability is the best I've ever seen." Morgan Academy Headmaster Mark Knight said "Gunnar is an outstanding athlete, student and Christian young man. He handles himself with class in everything he does. He works extremely hard and deserves all the awards he has received. We are proud of Gunnar and wish him the best."
