Saugus School Committee candidates discuss decision to replace school custodians with an outside company Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of questions we are asking each of the candidates running for the Saugus School Committee in the Nov. 5 Town Elections. There is a lack of candidate forums and so little opportunity for voters to see the candidates on the same level field at one time as they campaign for this important two-year elected office. Therefore, we decided to dedicate this space to questions related to Saugus Public Schools so our readers will be better informed when they go to the polls and vote for the five candidates they want to be members of the next School Committee. For this week, we asked the candidates whether they supported or opposed the decision to replace school custodians with a private company. The candidates’ responses to our questions follow in the order in which they were received.

Wheelabrator-related issues draw attention during SAVE’s Candidates Night By Mark E. Vogler
I
f Corinne R. Riley is elected to the Saugus Board of Selectmen, she said, closing the ash landfill at the Wheelabrator trash-to-energy plant by the year 2025 would be a top priority for her. Riley said she opposes any more extensions for the landfill and declared the town needs “to move onto another way” in disposal of the waste that the incinerator produces. Former Selectman Antho-
ny W. Cogliano, Sr. said that if elected back on the board, he would press for a pact with the owners of the Wheelabrator plant so the town can receive financial benefits besides tax revenue for being the incinerator’s longtime home. “We pass up between three and five million a year by not having a host agreement. We need to get Saugus’ fair share. Riley and Cogliano were among seven selectman hopefuls who outlined their campaign agendas Wednesday
during a Candidates Night hosted by the Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment (SAVE) in the second floor auditorium at Saugus Town Hall. The aspiring selectmen’s concerns about Wheelabrator were prominent during the forum as well as in the brief statements that each of the 12 candidates submitted to SAVE. Q: Do you have any concerns about the School Committee’s vote to replace the school custodians with a private company? Do you support or oppose that move and why?
School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith I support the School Committee and School District’s decision to outsource custodial services because I believe that it is ultimately in the best interests
