censed to care for 53 children, was among the early education centers and family child care providers across the state that Gov. Charlie Baker ordered to be closed down on March 23 to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Future financial losses could be significant The closure has cost Peas in a Pod nursery school about $160,000 in income, according to Bradley, a Saugus resident who has worked in the child care field for more than 30 years. But the financial losses could increase significantly more – even after June 29 – the target date for reopening, Bradley said.

For starters, the square footage in classrooms will increase from 36 to 42 square feet per child to achieve proper social distancing. At the same time, Bradley said, she will be required to increase the number of teachers from a one teacher to a two teacher to 10 ratio. She estimates that the school will be forced to reduce its number of slots from 53 to 32.

“We have two classrooms [preschool and pre-K] where we are going to be losing half of the kids,” Bradley said.

“And we’re going to be losing $20,000 a month for those two classrooms alone. And that’s not including what we are going to be losing for the infant room and the toddler room,” she said.

Meanwhile, during the period that the nursery school has been closed, Peas in a Pod has received government funding to cover the rent because the school has students enrolled on voucher payments. “But my utility bills are piling up, my

telephone bills are piling up, my cell phone bills are piling up and my Internet bills are piling because we haven’t been receiving any money,” she said.

To comply with the state’s reopening guidelines, Peas in a Pod also had to buy new equipment and supplies for the office and staff. Bradley recently ordered large sheets of plexiglass in order to make dividers to keep children six feet apart.

She also purchased three special thermometers to take the temperature of children when they come to school.

New clothing comes with the new guidelines. “I had to buy 35 button-down jerseys for my staff,” Bradley said.

“They have to wear these longsleeved, button-down shirts when they take the kids to the playground. And they get hot in the summer. It’s going to be sweltering for people who wear them.”

Bradley noted that some of the parents who are big supporters of the school bought some items to help out. “One of my parents bought the mask that is clear through the middle so children can see your smile,” she said.

“With most of the masks, they can’t see your facial expressions. And they’ve got to see our expressions to know that things are okay,” she said.

Bradley said it’s her intention to reopen and stay open as long as she can. “I love what I do,” she said. “I think I will struggle a little bit during the summertime. But during the fall – if the numbers don’t go up – it’s going to be very difficult.”

Every day she must wear protective gear and take special precautions to avoid catching the deadly virus which has killed more than 100,000 Americans. To observe social distancing, we conducted email and telephone interviews with Ashley.

The 25-year-old Saugus resident is the daughter of Robert and Sheila Firth. She has a brother, Robert Firth. Ashley is a 2013 graduate of Saugus High School, where she distinguished herself as an outstanding student athlete. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Athlete Leadership Council. She was also captain of the Varsity Soccer and Track and Field teams. In 2017 she graduated from the University of Vermont in Burlington with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and as a member of the Honor Society.

Know, I know, you all think of Bobby Orr or Derick Sanderson when we talk of the great Bruin teams. But Phil Esposito was the force that drove the team.

Esposito over his career he was a NHL player, coach and executive; a Canadian broadcaster; and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He was born on February 20, 1942 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. In the NHL he was six foot one had a playing weight of 205 pounds and shot left. In 2017 he was named as one of “100 Greatest NHL Players’ in NHL history. Signed by the Chicago Black Hawks in 1961, he was assigned to the Sarnia Legionnaires Jr ‘B’ hockey team for the 1960-1961 season. In 32 games with the Legionnaires he scored 47 goals and 61 assists. In the playoffs he scored 12 points as his team was eliminated. His next assignment was to the St. Catherine Teepees of the Ontario Hockey Association. He played forty-nine games for the Teepees, scoring 32 goals and 39 assists during the season, then a goal and assist in the playoffs. After the playoffs he was transferred to the Sault Thunderbirds. Phil was upgraded to the top minor league team of their Blackhawks, the St. Louis Braves for the 1962-1963 and the 1963-1964 seasons. Playing 114 games over the two seasons he scored62 goals and 108 assists.

He made his debut with the big team during the 1964 season, he played 27 games, scored three goals and added 2 assists. He moved up to the first line for the 1965-1966 season, centering for the great Bobby Hull, and twice finishing among the league-leading scorers. In 1967 he along with Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield was traded to the Boston Bruins. During his three full seasons for the Blackhawks he played in 208 games, scored 71 goals and added 98 assists.

In playoff actions over the three seasons he played in 25 games and scored four goals and four assists.

Now in Boston, Esposito became the greatest player of the time. In 1969 Esposito became the first player to score one hundred points in a season, and ended with 126 points He had 99 the next season, then over 100 for the next five years.

During his Boston career, he played in 625 games scoring 459 goals and had 557 assists.

In the 1970-1971 season he scored 76 goals, and went over 60 three times. He cashed the Art Ross Trophy as the leagueleading scorer five times. He was named to the NHL First All-Star team six consecutive

times and won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league MVP in 1969 and 1964. A popular saying in Boston during his career there was “Jesus saves, Espo scores on the rebound’. Though not speedy or graceful he got his points as an unmovable fixture in front of the net. He stated that “Scoring is easy. You simply stand in the slot, take your beating and shoot the puck in the net”. With Hodge on the right and Wayne Cashman on the left, he led one of the greatest power lines in the history of the league. Along with Bobby Orr the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, and led the league with first-place finishes in 1971-1972 and 1974.

In the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviets, in eight games he scored seven goals with 6 assists. In the 1976 Canada Cup, in seven games he scored four goals with three assists. In the 1977 World Cup, in 10 games he scored seven goals and added three assists.

The Bruins traded Esposito to the New York Rangers during the 1975-1976 season because Phil didn’t want to give up some of his playing time.

The Bruins received Brad Park, the second-best defenseman after Bobby Orr, Jean Ratelle, very good center and John Zanussi. During six seasons in New York, he played in 422 games, scored 184 goals and had 220 assists. His best season was 1977-1978 when he scored 38 goals and 43 assists.

He led the team to the Stanley Cup in 1979.

Esposito became the general manager and head coach of the Rangers for three years during the mid-80s and earned the nickname “Trader Phil” for the many transactions he completed. During his three years he made more trades than the Vancouver Canucks during the decade of the 1980s.

He was part of the founding group for the Tampa Bay Lighting and served as president and general manager from 1992 until 1998. He signed Manon Rheaume in 1983 as the first woman player in the NHL and is now a broadcaster for the Lighting games.

In addition to his Stanley Cups, Art Ross Trophies Hart Memorial Trophies; he was the Lester B. Pearson Award winner in 1971 and 1974; Lou Marsh Trophy as the Canadian Athlete of the year in 1972, a League All-Star ten times, First All-Star team six times, second All-Star team twice and the first NHL player to score over 1,000 points in a decade (1970s).

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame 1984. Boston may never see a center like Phil Esposito.

The Coronavirus count State reports 20 new confirmed Saugus COVID-19 cases; town receives news of two more virus-related deaths

T

here were 20 new cases of Saugus residents testing positive for COVID-19 over the past week, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 526 – a 4 percent increase, according to new data released late Wednesday afternoon by the state Department of Public Health (DPH).

Meanwhile, the DPH notified the town that its death total from the virus had risen to 30 – an increase of two over the same period. No information was available on the Saugus residents who died from the virus.

As of Wednesday, DPH officials reported 7,152 deaths statewide linked to COVID-19.

Of those, 979 have been reported in Essex County.

The DPH has been releasing numbers of COVID-19 cases for all 351 municipalities, broken down by city and town, every Wednesday. The agency on its website will post the number of cases of people testing positive for the Coronavirus and the number of cases per 100,000.

The 526 cases reported for Saugus averages out to a

rate of 1,850.46 per 100,000 – which is above the state average of 1,406.16 per 100,000 and is the 24th highest rate among all communities across the state, according to the data released Wednesday. But officials believe the numbers are substantially underreported in most communities because of the lack of aggressive testing for the virus.

“The Saugus Health Department strongly believes that additional unrecognized cases DO exist in Saugus,” the town advised in a press release. “Due to the fact that they are undetected, some of these infected individuals may not be properly isolated or quarantined, which is why the state continues to strongly request that everyone stay at home unless it is essential, wear a cloth face cover over their face when around others, practice social distancing, avoid gatherings, and to follow the CDC and MDPH guidance.

Of the 2616 people tested in Saugus so far, 20.11 percent tested positive for COVID-19.

The state average for people testing positive is 15.95 percent.

As of Wednesday, there were 14,857 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Essex County, the third highest among the state’s 14 counties. There were 101,592 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus statewide.

Nursing home update Of the total 30 COVID-19-related deaths reported in Saugus this week, the town’s two nursing homes accounted for 21 of them. There were 16 deaths reported at the Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, which is licensed for 88 total beds. There have been more than 30 cases of confirmed COVID-19 at the facility. There were five deaths reported at Saugus Rehabilitation and Nursing, a longterm care facility licensed for 80 beds. There have been more than 30 cases of confirmed COVID-19 at the facility.

The most recent Nursing Facility Audit Survey Results through May 29 show that both local nursing homes were “not in adherence,” due to deficiencies in core competency. They were each designated to receive “targeted infection control training” and were also subjected to being audited by Friday, May 29. The notice also announced a five-day public review and comment period, from June 4 through June 9.

Beyond the financial challenges generated by the state’s response to the Coronavirus, Bradley says she’s troubled about the future of child care in general and how the industry will be affected by the longterm observance of social distancing. “These kids need to play together. That’s how they learn. And now we are telling them ‘No,’” Bradley said.

“We’re telling kids they can’t play tag and they can’t play ball. The sense of touch is huge for child care. These kids need to be hugged. I always tell parents when I give my tour: ‘We’re going to hug them and love them.’ Now things have changed,” she said.

“Can we pick them up and carry them into their classroom when they’re sad? Or drag them by the hand? We’re with them 10 hours a day, and I can’t imagine not loving these kids.”

Selectman Riley proposes creation of Emergency Relief Fund

oard of Selectmen Vice Chair Corinne Riley seeks to establish an Emergency Relief Fund that would help Saugus residents during desperate times, like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The relief fund, according to the proposed Article, could be used to cover rent, food, prescriptions, utilities, transportation, heating and oil assistance. If approved, that Article would authorize

the Board of Selectmen to petition the state Legislature to designate a place on the town’s municipal tax bills or the motor vehicle excise tax bills, or mail with such tax bills a separate form whereby taxpayers of the town can voluntarily check off, donate and pledge an amount of money to be paid to the Emergency Relief Fund.

No date has been set for the Annual Town Meeting, which was initially scheduled to begin May 4 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, selectmen have not closed the Warrant for the meeting because a date has still not been set.

Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree said this week that the

town will probably proceed with a limited Town Meeting that would focus on fiscal matters related to the state of the 2021 Fiscal year, which begins July 1. “We would put off the other stuff until the fall,” Crabtree said.

“Right now, we’re waiting for an opinion from [Town Counsel] John Vasapolli to give us guidance,” Crabtree said.

Q: Do you have any family members or relatives in the nursing or health care field?

A: My mother works as an Xray tech at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for a long time.

Q: Do you have any career goals and dreams at this point in your life?

A: I plan on going back to school for my master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner or nurse educator. I got along really well with my professors in college and have kept in touch with them. I like the idea of giving back to my college and teaching there someday.

Q: What was your work life like before the outbreak of COVID-19? Just a brief sketch of the way it was before things changed; and I suspect it was a gradual change at first and then things moved quickly to the way things are today.

A: Before COVID we usually had critical care burn patients that require sterility and precautions, so we were used to wearing all the protective equipment necessary to keep the patients and ourselves safe/clean. However, as COV-

ID began to break out, our unit became strictly COVID. The hospital separated patients that tested positive. We had to quickly shift from having our specialty patients to now having critical care COVID patients.

There was almost a calm before the storm. Every week there is a change in plans; MGH is constantly sending us information on their plan for emergency phases of care. April was when it started to peak, and now we are just starting to see a decline in the number of patients with COVID. Q: About what time did you start to learn about the magnitude of the virus? And how did your job begin to change at the hospital?

A: It was around mid-April where we began to have an influx of COVID patients that required intubation and sedation due to their critical respiratory status. We had to quickly learn how to care for these patients in a safe and effective way. These patients were very unstable and had a long hospital stay. The precautions we had to take were very critical to protect ourselves and our patients.

Q: What have been the major changes that have occurred with your job since the outbreak of the Coronavirus?

A: Since COVID our numbers

of ICU patients has increased immensely. We are not used to having that many critical patients on the floor at a time, so we had to work together as a team to optimize the plan of care for these patients. MGH has separated the patients that tested positive for COVID, and my unit has transitioned into a COVID ICU. Because of the shortages of equipment,

we have accommodated to working with equipment that we are not familiar with using, which includes different forms of ventilators, which is a machine that helps the patients breathe or breathes for them. Every shift we wear glasses, masks, face shields and gowns. We are required to wear the same mask and eyewear throughout our 12-hour

Page 9 shifts. We are constantly being cautious about exposing ourselves and others to the virus.

Nurses are the ones responsible for coordinating family meetings to discuss the plan of care for patients in the ICU. Because of COVID, we restricted the visitation policy, so this has been challenging for families. Nurses are constantly in contact with family discussing the patient’s status and coordinating video calls for them to see the patient. This has been really difficult for us – to describe the dying process and providing compassionate care over the phone to families. We are the ones holding the patient’s hand as they are dying with no family at the bedside.

Q: What is your work schedule like?

A: I usually work 12-hour shifts, at least four days a week.

I work anywhere from 48 to 60 hours a week. I will work 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or I will work 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. I like the night shift. It’s a little more quiet. My schedule is kind of all over the place, and I kind of take it day by day.

Q: And no vacations lately, I guess.

A: I had plans to go to Vegas in the middle of April but had to postpone it.

Saugus gardens in the pandemic Here’s what’s blooming in town this week to make your walks more enjoyable

une is bustin’ out all over!

With May’s azaleas and lilacs not quite gone, huge flower clusters in an amazing range of shades are flowering on big green shrubs up to 15 feet tall in front of almost everybody’s house. With the desirable combination of green leaves all winter and showy flowers now, it is not too surprising that hybrid catawba rhododendrons are among the most popular plants in New England gardens. They grow quickly and they thrive in the acidic soils that normally occur in eastern Massachusetts, but as years go by some homeowners are a bit shocked by how their growth can come to overwhelm the house. Where there is room for such a large plant, however, they are a beautiful and low-maintenance choice. Catawbas are native to the southern Appalachians, but horticulturists crossed them with several Asian species, resulting in varied heights, flower colors and a little variation in bloom time.

Most varieties do bloom in early June, and the most common colors are pinkish lilac and purplish pink – but white, clear pink, dark purple, fire engine red, magenta and even yellow varieties can be found. They actually prefer partial shade, as the large leaves can be sunburned by too much sunlight in spring. While these rhododendrons are among the most widespread in Saugus gardens, there are also smallleafed rhododendrons, which bloomed earlier in the season, and our later blooming native rosebay rhododendron, which we will expect to see blooming closer to the 4th of July.

Persian catmint has become a very popular perennial for a great many reasons. If you have noticed more bunnies in your garden over the last few years, you are not alone. Charming as they may be, rabbits are often guilty of eating vegetables and flowers we might have wanted to enjoy ourselves – either

A: There’s a total of 25 patients on my floor. We usually have seven to eight people working at night; 10 to 12 during the day.

Q: Do you have these patients for a while?

A: It seems like a lot of these patients have a long stay; they stay about two weeks. They hang out on our floor until they

to eat or to look at. They do not find the scent of mint very appetizing, however, and this mint relative is a long blooming perennial with many ornamental qualities. Its first bloom of the season is occurring right now, and it is likely to rebloom once or twice later in the summer without much special attention. If you are willing to cut back the faded flowers, it will bloom a few extra times before winter sets in. It is not unusual to see some blossoms in late November. Catmint is a relative of catnip, which cat owners will be familiar with, but this is a showier and less gangly species. The flowers are lavender, although there is also a white variety which is a little more difficult to find in nurseries. Leaves emerge in May and last until December and are an appealing gray-green. It prefers sun but can tolerate part shade, doesn’t mind road salt or sea salt very much, and once established it can put up with drought. You are likely to find it surviving in challenging places near busy streets so there are many good examples of catmint plantings along Route 1, but it is also popular at the front edge of many home gardens.

I consider it an “instant gratification” plant because it flowers well even during the first

year after planting, and at the end of its first growing season it shows some obvious expansion, giving gardeners a hearty sense of satisfaction.

If you happen to be walking through Lynnhurst down Fairmount Avenue towards its junction with Walnut Street, you will see some showy white flowering shrubs from several blocks away. A spectacular planting of doublefile viburnum can be found next to the Welcome to Saugus sign where the two streets meet. In this group you will see some pink flowers peeking out at the bottom of one of the viburnums – they have nearly swallowed up a double-flowering azalea that was planted between two of them. There are other examples of doublefile viburnums in private gardens around town, but this group is one of the oldest and largest local plantings.

Most children who have participated in group activities at school or camp have become acquainted with the idea of walking in double file. If you look at the arrangement of leaves or flower clusters on this shrub’s branches, you can see where the plant got its name – leaves and flowers are organized in even pairs up and down each branch.

Lately it seems like things are getting better. We are seeing a lot less COVID-19 cases coming in and a lot less critical. A lot of our patients are middle-aged people in their 40s to 50s, but we have 18 year olds and people in their 90s.

Q: And the people who are your patients come from different backgrounds.

A: Some of the nurses are learning how to speak Span-

ish, but it’s really a variety of languages, so there’s a lot of coordination that the nurses have to do to set up interpreters for communicating with the families.

Since these patients are not allowed visitors, it’s really hard to walk the families through what’s going on. But every room has a tablet so that we are able to video-chat with the families.

Q: Do you still live at home?

If so, how has the virus affected your home life – precau-

white flowers in the center of the doily and larger petalled white flowers along the outside. The outer flowers usually have four petals, occasionally five, and many of them look like small white butterflies. If you look closely, you see that the less conspicuous flowers in the center contain more flower parts – stamens and pistils – while the larger petalled flowers do not.

This flower arrangement is often termed “lacecap,” and the showy petals on the sterile outer flowers help attract pollinators to the smaller inner flowers. Besides this species of viburnum,

you may be familiar with some varieties of hydrangea that also have this lacecap arrangement.

pare for those challenges?

A: The most challenging part of my job is knowing that I am going to be exposed to this virus, and that can make me feel anxious. We work long shifts – 12 hours a day – and pick up extra shifts to help our unit.

I am trying to do my part in this by wearing a mask in public and social distancing. It has been hard to be quarantined on my days off from work and not have outlets for stress, like

A “Shout-Out” for Andrew Wallace Precinct 5 Town Meeting Member Ron Wallace submitted the lone nomination for this week’s extraordinary person: his son, Andrew. And what a worthy candidate he is.

“My son Andrew won the Saugus Everett Elks Scholarship Award. He also won the American Federation of Teachers Sandra Feldman Scholarship Award. He is attending Bentley University in the fall,” Wallace wrote to us in an email this week.

“Andrew is also a Very hard worker and has worked throughout the pandemic at Stop & Shop in Saugus. He is a 2020 graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody Mass. Mom and I am very proud of his accomplishments!”

A tribute parade tonight for SHS grads!

This would have been Graduation Day for the Saugus High School Class of 2020 – had the COVID-19 outbreak never happened. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, there will be a special tribute tonight for the 160 students who will be getting their diplomas in another month or so. The graduates will be participating in a “Senior Roll” – a parade of cars that will depart the parking lot of the Blessed Sacrament Church on Summer Street at about 6:00. Parents and guardians of the seniors will chauffeur the graduates in their respective cars out of the staging area, headed up Summer Street, turning right on Appleton Street, then right onto Central Street, through the Center Rotary and remaining on Central Street, then a right onto Denver Street and a left onto Dow Street and passing by the Belmonte Middle School – where the students will be greeted by a welcoming crowd – the Saugus Public School Administration, the School Committee, Saugus district teachers and coaches – who will be lined up on Dow Street. The crowd, of course, will be observing social distancing while wearing face masks and waving farewell.

School officials have described this as “a rolling event” without any stops once it begins. There will be no gathering at the end of the parade.

This should be a nice warm-up for the upcoming commencement exercises.

Zapped by Zoom To tell you the truth, I haven’t been very fond of the Zoom teleconferencing that the Board of Selectmen, School Committee and other town boards have been using to hold their meetings.

After Tuesday night’s fiasco, I am even less of a fan. I have no confidence in the system and will probably watch future selectmen’s meetings the next day on Saugus TV on Vimeo, providing the meetings get taped.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to get onto Zoom for the recent meeting. Initially, I was accepted when I logged in a half hour before the meeting, but I got a spinning wheel and a message that the meeting hadn’t begun yet. When the time came and I was still in spinning mode, I logged out and back on again, using the instructions I received from Board of Selectmen Chair Anthony Cogliano’s email. Nothing happened, and then I got the email from Anthony: “The meeting ‘BOS’ at Tue, Jun 2, 2020 19:00 EDT has been cancelled. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

As it turned out, there was a meeting, a two-hour meeting – and apparently it wasn’t taped so residents couldn’t watch it the next day. “The Chair had to cancel a meeting link that got out wrong, so in order to hold the legal posted meeting, he had to cancel it to hold the right one,” Board of Selectmen Vice Chair Corinne Riley explained in an email later.

“There were a couple of issues, and understandably I can understand your frustration. It’s the first time, at least for BOS, we

experienced that kind of problem,” the vice chair wrote. “I am not great at these technology issues, but this was not intentional and I hope no one thinks that if they could not join in.”

So, if anyone was unable to join Tuesday night’s meeting, there were some technical difficulties – probably the same ones I encountered – that kept you from watching the meeting.

The COVID-19 Connection In case you haven’t noticed, Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree’s Office has added a special link to the town website called “COVID-19 Resources.” This contains some useful information for town residents who are interested in knowing more about the dreaded Coronavirus.

I’m not sure if somebody read my recommendation in last week’s column, but the top item in the resources is the link to the state Department of Public Health website, which includes a link to the latest state numbers – something we recommended. So, the same information that we use each Wednesday to prepare “The Coronavirus Count” is accessible by any Saugus resident who has access to a computer.

I was impressed that the town manager pointed out this addition to me on Wednesday. Hats off for the town manager and his staff for doing this for residents. There are more than a dozen different bars with all sorts of information for the citizen who wants to know more about COVID-19.

Main attractions at the Saugus Public Library All programs and events scheduled at the Saugus Public Library are cancelled until further notice. Anyone who has books to return to the library gets a pass during the time the library is closed, according to Library Director Alan Thibeault.

Meanwhile, the library this week announced the first in a series of virtual programs that can be viewed each week on Zoom: The (virtual) Yoga Experience: Join us each Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., for a free, basic yoga class that is ideal for beginners. This 45-minute slow flow class opens with a brief meditation, followed by a gentle warmup, some core strengthening, standing postures, and flexibility poses. Food pantry still open The Saugus United Parish Food Pantry will continue to remain open on Fridays between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. despite concerns over the Coronavirus. But they have made adjustments to protect their core of volunteers and the needy people who receive the food.

Those in need, even for short term or one-time assistance are encouraged to come.”

The food pantry is located in the basement of the Cliftondale Congregational Church at 50 Essex St. in Saugus.

Taking care of hungry students Julie Cicolini, a member of the Board of Directors for Healthy Students-Healthy Saugus (HS2), wants to make sure people in the community are aware of some program changes.

“Please be aware that Healthy Students-Healthy Saugus bags are now available on Thursdays instead of Fridays 10 a.m. to Noon,” she advised us this week.

“Whitsons food service, that has been managing the grabn-go meals for students and HS2 weekend bag distribution during the school closure, will be moving to 2 days a week.

This is to help reduce contact and limit residents from leaving their home to pick up food…HS2 will provide weekly, no contact, delivery on Thursdays to ensure those we serve receive their HS2 weekend bags and keep everyone home. Please visit Healthy Students-Healthy Saugus Facebook page and send a message to be added to the delivery list…Grab-n-go breakfast/lunch meals will be distributed every Monday (three days of meals) and Thursday (two days of meals) from 10am-12pm.

The food market is generally held at the Saugus Senior Center, but given the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are currently offering a contactfree, drive-thru food pantry at Memorial Hall on Main Street in Melrose. If you are unable to pick-up, some limited deliveries may be available. This offering is year round. Buy a brick to honor your vets The Saugus War Monument Committee, once again, is sponsoring the Buy A Brick Program to honor all those who have served their country. If you would like to purchase one in the name of someone who is presently serving or has served, in the memory of a loved one, or just from your family, school, etc., the general pricing is $100 for a 4″ X 8″ brick (three lines), $200 for 8″ X 8″ brick (five lines) and $500 (five lines) for a corporate brick. Each line is a maximum of 15 characters. The improvement and upkeep of the monument on the corner of Winter and Central Streets rely on the generosity of donors through fundraising.

Helping the vet During these challenging times, your local Veterans’ Service Officers would like to share some information on a benefit program that is available to those who qualify.

If you are a Veteran or the surviving spouse of a Veteran, the “Chapter 115 Benefits Program” is a Massachusetts state initiative that provides financial aid for Veterans and/or their surviving spouses who reside in Massachusetts and meet certain income and asset guidelines. Benefits may include monthly ordinary benefits and/or payment/reimbursement for medical expenses. Whether laid off, in transition or living on a fixed income, the program is designed to provide short term or long term assistance as needed to provide relief. The program is overseen by the Massachusetts Department Veterans’ Servic-

es (DVS), which runs the program in partnership with local Veterans’ Service Officers (VSOs). Every town or district in Massachusetts has a VSO. VSOs assist Veterans and their dependents in learning about, applying for, and receiving Chapter 115 benefits. VSOs can also help you in applying for other benefits and connecting with local resources. Your local VSO handles applications, obtains program approval from DVS, and provides local benefits. The program is funded by a combination of state and local funds. DVS pays for 75 percent and your city or town pays for 25 percent of the approved benefits.

There are income and asset limits for the program. Extended Ira Contribution Deadline

Annual Town Meeting Warrant remains open Because of the Coronavirus, selectmen are unable to set a date for the Annual Town Meeting – which is usually scheduled for the first Monday in May. This year would have been May 4. So, Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree says Town Counsel John Vasapolli has advised the Board of Selectmen not to close the Warrant yet.

That means residents who are interested in submitting Articles to be included on the Warrant for this year’s Annual Town Meeting have additional time.

And to make things easier and safer during these times where communities are observing the practice of social distancing, Crabtree says anybody who is going to submit articles doesn’t need to collect signatures. “Just put them in the box,” Crabtree said, referring to the box near the steps of Town Hall where residents are also able to submit envelopes containing payment for taxes.

long with the extended due date for tax returns until July 15, 2020, the deadline for making IRA contributions for calendar year 2019 is also July 15, 2020. This includes Traditional IRA’s, Roth IRA’s as well as other retirement vehicles such as SEP/ IRA’s, Solo 401(k)’s, etc.

If you plan on making a 2019 IRA contribution between now and July 15, 2020, make sure that your contribution is not classified as a 2020 contribution.

The CARES Act also eliminated the requirement of Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s) for calendar year 2020. This will avoid having to pay income taxes on an RMD when filing a 2020 tax return in 2021.

However, many taxpayers need to take the RMD in order to pay for necessary expenses throughout the year.

In these situations, the income taxes cannot be avoided.

For those taxpayers that turned 70½ in calendar year 2019, an RMD would have been normally required to be taken by April 1, 2020.

The CARES Act eliminated this requirement. They can now wait until 2021 to take their RMD. The CARES Act also increased the Required Beginning Date (RBD) for RMD’s to age 72 for those taxpayers who turn 70 ½ in calendar year 2020.

The CARES Act also waives the 10% penalty on early IRA distributions and early pension plan distributions on up to $100,000 of distributions. An early distribution occurs when the funds are withdrawn prior to having reached age 59 ½. Furthermore, the income taxes owed can be spread out over a three-year period while maintaining the right to reinvest the withdrawn funds also over the same threeyear period. Such a distribution should only be made as a last resort.

Employer retirement plan loans are also doubled under the new law. An employee can borrow up to the lesser of $100,000 or 100% of his or her retirement plan balance. The law does not allow you to borrow against your Traditional IRA or Roth IRA.

Every week there was an influx of patients, and we did not know when things were going to get better. Although this was scary and anxiety provoking, we really pulled together as a team to support each other.

This has been a terrifying experience for patients as they are getting intubated alone and with us, who are just strangers to them. A lot of these patients quickly deteriorate, so we have a responsibility to earn their trust that we will do our best to optimize their health.

Q: Again, without violating any confidentiality, what have been some of your toughest experiences to date? Describe some of the things you have had to face firsthand or observed.

A: The hardest thing has been seeing patients die without any family at the bedside.

Nurses are the ones that give them medication to be comfortable while they are dying and holding their hand. We are calling the family and videochatting, describing the dying process. We clean the patients and take them down to the morgue ourselves on night shift. This has been difficult for

going to the gym or socializing with friends. We are constantly dealing with hardships patients and families are going through because of COVID. Being a nurse makes me feel responsible to do my part in protecting the community by limiting the people I have contact with and wearing a mask around others.

Q: I guess it can be pretty dangerous working conditions, constantly working with the threat of exposure to the virus.

A: We always worry about being exposed to the virus. If somebody’s ventilator pops off, we’re exposed, and we all have to change our masks. Any time we are intubating someone, that’s exposure as well, whether you are taking the breathing tube in or out. Since COVID-19, we’re a lot more cautious now than ever before – about how germs spread and how to take care of ourselves.

Q: What is it like every day you come to a hospital to work a shift? What are some of the major things you have to do now that you didn’t before the virus?

A: Every day before my shift I have to fill out a survey in regard to having any COVID symptoms; if you do not have symptoms then you receive a notification that you are cleared to work. After completing the survey, we go through a line of security to show our pass certification and MGH badge. Then there are stations set up to get your hands sanitized and another to receive a surgical mask.

Q: How has the experience of working as a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic affected your overall world view and perspective?

A: This pandemic has made me feel incredibly grateful for being healthy and having a great support system. This has made me realize how important it is to make time to see family and friends. We have to be more appreciative of the

simple things in life and having the ability to socialize and access to the necessary things in life. I’m also grateful that I still have a job at a time where many people are unemployed.

Q: Briefly, what will you remember most five or 10 years from now, after the Coronavirus is behind us?

A: It’s going to be so crazy, looking back on this. I will remember how hard it was to be isolated during quarantine and

how hard I worked to help people during these times. I will never forget all of these crazy hours and constantly being worried about being exposed to the virus.

Q: How was the drive-by that the town did for you a few weeks back?

A: The drive-by was such an incredible surprise by my family and friends. I was humbled that they took the time out of their day to come support me.

I am grateful that the Saugus Fire Department and Police

also took time out of their shift to drive by.

Q: Anything else that you would like to share?

A: I am concerned that some people just think that this is a joke or are not taking COVID-19 as seriously as they should. I think if people could shadow us for a day, then they’d really understand how severe this can be. I guess it doesn’t really hit you how serious this is until you know somebody who has been exposed to COVID-19 and is be-

ing treated for it. A lot of people don’t understand that you can be a healthy person and still get the Coronavirus. The next thing you know, it catches you by surprise. You need to understand that you are not invisible to this. We see patients from 18 into their 90s. People need to take steps to protect themselves.

I drove by the Wakefield lake the other day and saw groups of people grouped together and a lot of them not wearing masks.
