MONEYWISE | from page 1 get that Crabtree and his financial staff crafted to become obsolete. Instead of getting ready to advocate his plan that would carry town government through June 30, 2021, Crabtree is worried as to whether the town will have the revenue to close out the current fiscal year.

Running town government has become a bundle of uncertainties as the cost of protecting Saugus residents from COVID-19 has become the top priority for Saugus, every community in Massachusetts, every state in the country and every nation on earth.

“We’re trying to keep business as usual. But, it’s really not as usual,” Crabtree told the Board of Selectmen at Tuesday (April 21) night’s meeting, the second one held through Zoom Video Conference.

In his report to the board, Crabtree said dealing with the health crisis on the local level has already cost the town from $600,000 to $700,000 “in emergency spending for this virus.” Much of that money has gone for staffing in the town’s Health Department, for necessary supplies and for implementing various programs to educate and protect the public from the disease that has already killed more than 2,000 people in Massachusetts – including four Saugus residents.

“This is a moving target that we’re going to have to figure out – finances and providing services for residents here

and to keep the government moving,” Crabtree said.

“We’re trying to figure out what we’re looking at for deficits, whether it’s revenue or appropriation deficits. Hopefully, there will be relief from the state, at least from the accounting part of it. We’re trying to make sure we have enough money to try and pay employees,” he said.

The dilemma of endangered revenues The major sources of revenues that pay for the town’s municipal services are all in jeopardy because the state has shut down nonessential businesses that draw crowds. Several thousand business owners who are losing money and homeowners who have lost their jobs will have trouble paying their tax bills on time.

Hotel and meal taxes that generate about a million dollars a year will be depleted greatly because of the lack of business at restaurants and hotels along the Route 1 business corridor.

The inability of business and home owners to pay their taxes will lead to a flood of applications for abatements.

With numerous businesses shut down, the water and sewerage enterprise funds will generate less revenue. “ Think about this: All of the businesses are closed.

How long they’re going to remain closed is going to have a major effect on the amount of water that is being used,” Crabtree said, “so when the water consumption goes down, we bill out less. We now run into a deficit with what we expected for revenues.”

Selectman Debra Panetta was curious about the fiscal challenges facing the town because of COVID-19. “Any idea on what that impact is going to be or is it just too early to say?” Panetta asked.

Crabtree responded that “it’s far too early to say…

I don’t want to throw out numbers to worry anybody.

But this is going to be pretty significant, and so I think for us to be able to have healthy, fiscal books here in Saugus – having the ability to tap into free cash for unexpected occurrences within the fiscal year, that puts us in a much better place,” Crabtree said.

“And also having the stabilization money. Those are the things that we’re going to have to definitely tap into, to be able to withstand this, because from an economic standpoint, some of these businesses aren’t going to open up.”

Time is a huge factor Wendy Hatch, the town’s finance director and treasurer/collector, and other members of the town’s financial team have been monitoring the fiscal situation and making projections. “But it’s very difficult to sort of put a gauge on it because we don’t know how long this is going to last,” Crabtree stressed.

“Even if they open restaurants two weeks from now or a month from now, I don’t know what kind of rollout or what kind of business they are going to do. That affects the water usage. That affects a whole bunch of things,” he said.

Developing a public confidence that all health issues have been addressed and that people can return to work without worrying is crucial, according to Crabtree. “There has to be some sort of confidence for the economy to come back. And the economy coming back is what’s going to help the town stabilize, with people employed and people doing things,” Crabtree said.

“But, obviously, that has to be done in a certain manner and in a certain way when they know enough about the virus and how to protect ourselves,” he said. “Having stabilization and having free cash – that will, hopefully, balance us so we are not in a position that we have to reduce or eliminate services to the public and/or lay employees off.”

The town has a stabilization fund of more than $9 million and additional $1 million to $2 million to draw from in free cash, according to Crabtree. But it’s still not clear how far that money will go before the costs of COVID-19 become insurmountable. Unexpected costs – like buying face masks and shields for volunteer election workers in the fall for the state and presidential elections – will only add to the escalating price of town government.

“I t ’s a lot of worries to keep things moving and see where we are. It’s significant moneywise,” Crabtree said. “We’re in unprecedented times. We’re trying to figure out where we are going to be with the emergency spending that we’re involved with to fight the virus and to address a plan for what’s happening now with this health crisis as well as worrying about what money is going to be collected and timing-wise what’s going to be collected.”

First-term Town Meeting Member Joe Vecchione shares his vision for improving the Business Highway Sustainable Development Zoning District Editor’s Note: For this week’s paper, we interviewed Joseph John Vecchione IV, one of 20 new Town Meeting members elected last fall. The 50-member body, with five members for each of the 10 precincts, usually convenes the first Monday in the month of May. But no date has been set for this year’s session because of health concerns raised about assembling such a large gathering during the COVID-19 crisis.

Nevertheless, Joe recently submitted four Articles to be included in this year’s Warrant for the Annual Town Meeting. Three of the Articles he drafted are amendments he advocates for improving the Business Highway Sustainable Development Zoning District (BHSD). In an effort to practice social distancing, Joe agreed, via several emails and phone conversations, to answer questions about his motivations for getting involved in local government and his reasons for the Articles he researched and wrote.

Joe is a third-generation Saugonian – and fourth-generation Joe (IV). His great-grandfather – Giuseppe/Joe Sr. – emigrated from Italy to the USA. Joe IV is a 2009 Saugus High School graduate. After graduation, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture (2013) and a Master of Architecture degree (2014), He currently works at Bergmeyer Associates, a design collaborative located in Boston’s Seaport District, and he recently became a licensed architect in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Part I of our interview follows and Part II will run in next week’s edition, with Joe explaining the purpose for each of the three Town Meeting Articles he introduced related to improving the BHSD. Our interview with Joe Vecchione concludes next week.

Q: Please tell me a little bit about yourself.

A: As a lifelong Saugonian, I’ve always had an interest in town affairs, particularly in Saugus’ unique built environment. Wanting to give a voice to a younger generation of residents beginning to raise families in Saugus, I decided at the age of 28 to run for Town Meeting in Precinct 2 and was ultimately elected last November.

I grew up in the Cliftondale neighborhood and bought my first home with my wife, Katie, in 2015 on Baker Hill just above Cliftondale Square. I really drifted far! We welcomed our first daughter, Amelia, just last month and have spent most of

old “actions speak louder than words” adage. There are issues across the board that need to be addressed and the next few years are critical to determine our success years and even decades down the line.

While I’m of a younger generation than most elected and appointed officials in Saugus, the first tenet I made for my-

self when I ran for this position was to listen to, work with and collaborate with anyone without prejudgment, no matter their political leanings (locally or nationally), age, agenda, longevity in town government, or background. I feel this principle could be viewed as an asset as I’ve since learned that it is not

this quarantine learning how to offering my insight and experbe great parents and, of course, tise on particular issues – the drafting the Articles I’m answering questions about today.

I’m the only Saugus High grad in my family (my brother went to Malden Catholic and my sister went to Nazareth Academy). I chose to stay in town to go to school with my friends and play hockey for my town in a program that had a great tradition. The education I received (at least from 20052009) was high quality and helped me in gaining acceptance to Wentworth. My grandfather (Joe Jr.) did not graduate.

My dad (Joe III) is a Voke grad (1976). My wife is a Pope John grad (2009).

Q: What motivated you to run for Town Meeting last fall?

Was there a particular issue or several issues? Was it expertise you have from your professional occupation as an architect that you thought could help the town?

A: As I stated prior, I wanted to give a voice to a younger generation of residents: those who are beginning to raise families in Saugus and will be a big part of what we become as a town in the future. It’s a voice that I feel hadn’t been part of the civic discussion as of late.

I see endless potential in the town of Saugus, and while I certainly have seen some progress in the past few years, I thought we could still do quite a bit better in multiple facets. Without getting too in depth in the particular issues that frustrated me, I felt that instead of partaking in the banter on social media, I could get involved and actually do the work focused on progressing our town while

here were 57 new cases of Saugus residents testing positive for COVID-19 over the past week, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 194 – a 41 percent increase, according to new data released late Wednesday afternoon by the state Department of Public Health.

Meanwhile, just a day earlier, the DPH notified the town of its first deaths from the virus – four. “The Saugus Health Department reports that the deceased were originally suspected but have now been confirmed as testing positive for COVID-19,” the town announced in a press release issued by Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree’s Office on Tuesday. “The Health Department also reports that the deceased all had other underlying health conditions.” No information was available on the Saugus residents who died from the virus.

As of Wednesday, the state had reported 2,182 deaths linked to COVID-19.

the virus and we’re likely going to know people who passed, unfortunately,” Crabtree told selectmen at their Tuesday night meeting.

“These are tough times,” he said.

Crabtree noted the state had record triple digit deaths for about a week. “It’s pretty concerning,” he said.

Cases cited at a local nursing home As of Wednesday night, there were 42,944 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, including 5,783 in Essex County.

“Nursing homes are being hit the hardest,” Crabtree told selectmen.

“I know that the Health Department has reached out to the state in dealing with our nursing homes and trying to get help in dealing with the issues that arise in some of the nursing homes,” he said.

The Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, a Saugus nursing home licensed for 88 beds, had 10 to 30 cases of residents and staff testing positive for the virus, according to the DPH website.

There were no reported COVID-19 cases at the Saugus Center Nursing Home.

The DPH has begun releasing numbers of COVID-19 cases for all 351 municipalities, broken down by city and town, every Wednesday. The agency on its website will post the number of cases of people testing positive for the novel coronavirus, and the number of cases per 100,000.

The 194 cases reported for Saugus averages out to a rate of 481.96 per 100,000, according to the data released Wednesday. But officials believe the numbers are substantially underreported in most communities because of the lack of aggressive testing for the virus.

“The Saugus Health Department strongly believes that additional unrecognized cases DO exist in Saugus,” the town advised in a press release. “Due to the fact that they are undetected, some of these infected individuals may not be properly isolated or quarantined, which is why the state continues to strongly request that everyone stay at home unless it is essential, wear a cloth face cover over their face when around others, practice social distancing, avoid gatherings, and to follow the CDC and MDPH guidance.

“The Saugus Health Depart-

ment expects those numbers to increase considerably during this surge, as does every other community in Massachusetts.

“Again, this is a reminder that as the CDC and MDPH has warned everyone these couple of weeks in Massachusetts are when they expect the peak of the COVID-19 cases in the Commonwealth.”

For the fifth consecutive week since the first case of the deadly virus was reported in Saugus on March 19, the number of town residents testing positive for the killer virus escalated significantly.

How Saugus compares to neighboring communities As of press time yesterday, town officials were unaware of any additional deaths of Saugus residents infected with the virus since the four deaths reported earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, town residents are able to compare the number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in Saugus to neighboring cities and towns as well as communities of similar size by going to the DPH website at https://www.mass.gov/infodetails/covid-19-response-reporting – then click on COVID-19 cases by city/town. COVID-19 cases reach 211 in Saugus Six residents die from killer virus, DPH reports

T

he total number of confirmed cases in Saugus of residents testing positive for COVID-19 has climbed to 211 – an increase of 74, according to a report the town received yesterday from the state Department of Public Health (DPH).

The DPH also notified the Saugus Health Department that the death toll in town has risen to six.

“The Saugus Health Department reports that the two most recent deceased individuals had other underlying health conditions,” noted a press release issued yesterday by Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree’s Office.

out to those families that have been affected by this health pandemic,” the statement continued. “Massachusetts health officials have announced as of Wednesday, April 22, 2020, 221 more people have died in the Commonwealth after contracting COVID-19, bringing the state total to 2,182. So far, 42,944 cases in total have been confirmed while 180,462 people have been tested for the virus.”

eat dinner, let the dog out and put my daughter to bed while still being able to attend, listen and submit these Articles.

I began to take a hard look at the BHSD zoning bylaws around the time of the construction of the Avalon at Hilltop. I remember driving by while construction was progressing and realized what we were sold as a town and what was being built were two different things. The purpose and intent of the BHSD bylaws were to embrace smart growth principles in a sustainable way in order to create vibrant mixeduse developments that replace underutilized or obsolete commercial spaces. The BHSD is a local variation of a zoning bylaw that has been implemented successfully across the state, region and country. While it offers incredible opportunity, it needed to be form fit to the uniqueness of the Route 1 corridor and modified accordingly.

The biggest issue I see with the bylaw and how it’s governed the built environment of Saugus thus far is a lack of balance. I think that was the big miss. If we’re introducing a new building typology into what was a historically commercial and industrial corridor for decades, it should be

carefully planned and gradually implemented. This is where the lack of a Master Plan and the lack of a functional Planning and Development department was felt. We are one of the few towns in the area that lack both. Since we were not proactive in planning, we needed to react to what developers were presenting to us piecemeal and did not really have an understanding how it would impact the infrastructure, the local business community, public safety, tax base, traffic and even the school system. As a result, the breakdown of new development on Route 1 has been, according to Selectman Michael Serino, approximately 92 percent residential use and only 8% commercial use.

As an architect, you really learn quite a bit through your clients whether they’re retail, residential, hospitality, workplace or education based. You work with municipalities, inspectors, engineers, environmentalists, attorneys, public safety, community groups, financers, contractors, etc. It’s a broad field and one that I think holds quite a bit of value when serving your constituents.

Q: You sat patiently through a three-and-a-half-hour Selectmen’s meeting last week and then introduced four Articles – three of them having to do with the Business Highway Sustainable Development Zoning District (BHSD). What motivated you to offer the Articles that would amend the BHSD? What were the concerns you have that prompted you to submit these Articles? What do you see as the chief flaws that you believe should be corrected?

A: That was quite a marathon of a meeting. I guess the silver lining in waiting that long to speak is that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was held on Zoom so I could

“We’re going to have School Committee vs. Selectmen in the bumper cars,” he said.

That drew some friendly, fighting words from Selectman Debora Panetta.

“You won’t win. We’re ruthless,” she quipped.

Representatives of Apex Entertainment SO Saugus, LLC unveiled their plans in a public hearing before selectmen.

The company has filed an application for a Special Permit (S-2) that would allow it to operate an indoor commercial recreational facility within the 100,000 square feet area on the first floor of the Square One Mall.

Apex Entertainment proposes to repurpose the retail space that is currently occupied by Sears, Roebuck and Co.” with a variety of entertainment activities “geared toward providing regional residents, families and corporations with high quality, safe year-round enjoyment,” according to the application filed with the town.

The company’s proposed activities include bumper cars, bowling, go-karts, laser tag, ropes course, arcade, sports simulators, mini golf and a full-service restaurant and bar with an all-alcohol liquor license. Apex currently owns and operates three Apex Entertainment -- in Marlborough, Mass., Albany, N.Y. and Syracuse, N.Y. Whittredge said he is familiar with the facility in Marl-

borough, where he has a lot of friends in the area.

“To have something in town like this would benefit every single youth group,” Whittredge said.

“This would be a phenomenal addition to town. A phenomenal addition to the mall,” Board of Selectmen Chair Anthony Cogliano said.

Panetta said she found the application attractive too, but added that further review was needed before selectmen voted on the application.

“It would be great to bring some new life into Square One, but we need to do our due diligence,” she said.

Selectmen expressed concerns about minors having potential access to places of the center where alcohol would be served, the entrance from the mall, the impact of traffic on local roads and assurances that the crowds would not adversely affect the neighborhood after it closed for the night.

They voted to continue the application until the board’s meeting, set for 7 p.m. on May 19.

Selectman Jeffrey Cicolini said he wanted the building commissioner, Police and Fire Department to review the application and offer their recommendations before selectmen took a vote.

“I have concerns about having an entrance from the mall,” Selectman Michael Serino said.

Serino said he was also concerned about whether the proposed center would be frequented by too many people: 1,400.

“I want Freddy (Building Commissioner Fred Varone) to look at the capacity number,” Serino said. He added that he wanted to see the security plans.

Cogliano said he wasn’t

that concerned about the capacity.

“I ran the Palace (Night Club) when I was 21 years old and we had 2,500 people coming out at the same time,” he said.

Cogliano said he was impressed with what he observed of the facility in Marlborough, especially the restaurant. “This isn’t your runof-the mill bowling alley food,” he said.

Panetta said selectmen needed to review the recommendations from town department heads who would comment on the project.

“It’s going to be our little Disney Land in Saugus,” Panetta said.

“There’s going to be a lot of cars,” she said.

She said her main concern was about the liquor. “I’m very interested to see what the Police Department says,” she said.

Board of Selectmen Vice Chair Corinne Riley said she had concerns about security and impact on the area neighborhood after the mall closed at night.

But, she also said she “would love to see something like this come to our town.”

Cicolini said he preferred to see the last call for serving alcohol rolled back to 12:30 a.m..

“I love the concept. I think it would be a great change of pace venue for the mall that’s been sputtering,” Cicolini said.

But he added his “big concern” was about the mall’s “less than friendly” attitude toward the Saugus Police Department and the clientele that frequented the mall.

Apex Entertainment’s application included letters of support from the Marlborough mayor and police chief.

Babe Ruth, “The Bambino”

T

his is the third installment of the Babe Ruth story.

Previously you read about the great pitcher for the Red Sox, then the sale to the Yankees.

In the 1921 season, Ruth slammed homers early and often surpassed the previous most career home runs record of 138. On September 15, he hit his 55th home run. Ruth ended the season with 59 home runs, batted .378 and had a slugging percentage of .846 as the Yankees won the pennant. The Polo Grounds hosted the World Series games as the New York Giants and the Yankees both used the field as home ground. The Giants won the series five games to two as Ruth hit .316, had five runs batted in and hit his first World Series homer.

After the series, Ruth and some teammates formed a barnstorming tour team, against the rules of Major League Baseball. The MBL players were suspended by the Commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, until May 1922, and he fined them their World Series checks. In August the rule was changed to allow players limited touring, but only with the permission of the Commissioner.

March 6, 1922, saw the Babe sign a new contract with the Yankees for $52,000, more than twice what had ever been paid to a ballplayer before, and it added up to 40

percent of the team players’ payroll. Ruth was named the captain of the Yankees even though he was suspended until May. He worked out with the team and played exhibition games on off days.

He and those of the team who had been suspended returned to the game on May 20 to a sellout crowd at the Polo Grounds. On May 25 he was tossed out of the game for throwing dirt in the face of the umpire, George Hildebrand. Babe was fined and removed as captain. Because of the suspension, Ruth only appeared in 110 games and he batted .315 while smashing 35 home runs. Even without a full-time Babe, the Yankees once again won the pennant and once again faced the Giants in the Polo Grounds.

The Giants’ manager told his pitchers to only throw curveballs to Ruth and the plan was effective. Ruth only had two hits in 17 plate appearances, and the Yankees lost again, four games to zero, although one game was a tie. After the season the Elks Club invited Ruth to a banquet where each speaker, including the mayor, Jimmy Walker, censured Ruth for his poor behavior both on and off the field. Babe must have taken it to heart as he appeared to spring training in his best shape since becoming a Yankee.

The Giants told the Yankees that the field lease would not be renewed, so the Yankees built a new stadium in the

Bronx, and the field was completed in time for the 1923 season for their home opener on April 18, and when the Babe hit his first homer in the new park, it quickly became known as “The House That Ruth Built.” The stadium was built to aid left-handed hitters like Ruth, and his position in right field was designed to spare him the problem of sun in his eyes. Ruth hit 40 homers and batted .393. The Yankees won their third straight American League title. Again, they faced the Giants in the World Series and Ruth dominated the games. He belted three homeruns, batted .368, walked eight times, scored eight runs and had a slugging average of 1,000. The Yankees dedicated their new park with the title, winning the World Series, four games to two.

In 1924 the Washington Senators broke the Yankees’ three years sequence of winning the American League pennant. The Yankees suffered many injuries and could not compete successfully.

Ruth batted .378 and won his only AL batting title, but he smacked 46 home runs. He let himself go during the offseason and swelled to 260 pounds. He suffered illness during spring training and collapsed in Asheville, N.C., as the Yankees were traveling north. He was sent to New York, where he was hospitalized, and after being released collapsed again. It was later

decided that his illness was the result of his lifestyle in which he got little sleep and drank a large amount of alcohol. He was hospitalized again and suffered multiple convulsions. He was in St. Vincent’s Hospital for six weeks and finally released to careful workouts with the team. Ruth only played in 98 games in 1925 and batted .290 with 25 home runs. The Yankees finished last in the AL with a 69-85 record.

After the disastrous season, Babe began working out in Artie McGovern’s gym for the 1926 season. The Yankees were in a rebuilding project, adding many new faces, including Tony Lazzeri and Lou Gehrig. During the season, Ruth batted .372 with 47 homers and 146 RBIs. The Yankees won the AL and faced the St. Louis Cardinals, who had the lowest winning percentage of a champion at .578. The Yankees were heavy favorites and took the first game in New York, but the Cardinals rallied to win games two and three.

Ruth blasted three home runs in game four, which led to the victory. New York took game five, but Grover Cleveland Al-

exander pitched and won game six for the Cardinals and proceeded to get very drunk afterward. However, he was inserted in game seven and got the win for St. Louis.

The season of 1927 started out with the Yankees considered as the greatest team in baseball ever; it had a batting group known as “the Murderers’ Row” because of the heavy hitters in the lineup.

The Yankees clinched the pennant on Labor Day while winning 110 games for the season. The nation was expectant of Ruth to surpass his 59 homers, and Lou Gehrig was tied with Ruth at 24 homers in June. On September 30, Ruth hit his 60th homerun while Gehrig added 47. Babe batted .356, drove in 164 runs and slugged .772 for the season. The 1927 season’s World Series included the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Yankees swept the series in four games.

During the 1928 season the Yankees suffered many injuries and were chased by the Philadelphia Athletics, but

Schools closed for rest of year, spring sports unlikely

A

lthough the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) had put off making an official decision until Friday, it seemed pretty much a foregone conclusion that the 2020 high school spring sports season will cease to commence at all. This development came about as a result of Gov. Charlie Baker’s announce-

ment on Tuesday that all schools in the state must remain closed for the remainder of this school year.

Baker’s order came just about a week after the MIAA had approved preliminary plans for an abbreviated spring season that would have started on May 4, the pervious target date to reopen schools. The season was set to run to June 27 with just sectional tournaments being

played and no state tourney competition. This included cancellation of the “Super 8” Div. 1 baseball tourney and individual tennis tournaments.

Spring sports comprise baseball, softball, tennis, golf, lacrosse and outdoor track & field.

The news on Tuesday comes as a blow to student-athletes, coaches and community members, who were looking forward to

competition this spring. In particular, senior athletes will not get the opportunity to participate in their final seasons.

The MIAA responded to Baker’s announcement on Tuesday by saying it will provide a formal statement on the status of spring sports on Friday (after press deadline). The MIAA did acknowledge via a social media message that the decision to

shut down for the remainder of the year was “difficult news.”

The Saugus High School athletics Twitter page praised its senior athletes. “You are an outstanding class and you have represented our school and community with pride and honor,” the message said. “Continue to hold your heads high; you will be stronger for having gone through this challenge.”

Gronk unretires to join Brady in Tampa

hen former New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski held an emotional press conference last year expressing how he had lost his love for playing football, and how that was the reason why he was retiring, it came off as a sincere farewell.

Perhaps at the time it was.

Maybe Gronk was beaten down both mentally and physically from nine years of getting banged up and suffering several injuries as one of quarterback Tom Brady’s main receiv-

ing targets in the Patriots’ highpowered offense. But after a year on the sidelines and playing the role of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler, clownish TV commentator, and beach party promoter, the unpredictable Gronk decided this week to return to the field and rejoin Brady as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It appears whatever umbilical cord that had remained with the Pats was severed completely after Gronkowski’s choice to hook up with his buddy Brady in Tampa. Reports had abounded for the past three years, since New

England’s Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia in 2018 when defensive back Malcom Butler was mysteriously benched, that both Brady and Gronk had apparently grown tired and wary of head coach Bill Belichick’s overbearing “Do your job” methodology.

Gronk often hinted that playing for the Pats lacked fun, and Brady seemed to lose a bit of his long-held commitment to excellence by not showing up for voluntary offseason workouts the past couple of seasons, something he had regularly done most of his career.

No doubt the absence of

Gronkowski and Brady is going to have a significant impact on New England in the coming seasons. Though the defense was statistically one of the best in the NFL last year, it’s the offensive production that has really been the mainstay of the Patriots’ success over the past decade or so. The defense was always good at mitigating damage and making big plays at key moments, but it has not been a dominant fixture since the period that ran from 2003-2007.

With Brady and Gronk providing many of the highlights in this second decade of the 21st century,

the Pats offense was consistently able to roll up an average of 30-plus points on a regular basis.

Of course, this made the 2019 Super Bowl victory – a 13-3 win over the Rams – a bit unusual, as the offense had suddenly become a ground-and-pound attack. That said, however, it was still Brady and Gronk who connected on a huge pass play that set up New England’s game-clinching touchdown in the final quarter.

It seems odd to have both number 12 and number 87 no longer in New England and now donning the uniform of another

“Nothing good happens after midnight” Selectmen agree with neighbor and vote to deny request by 7-Eleven on Lincoln Avenue for 24-hour license

oe Eideh sought a permit to extend the hours of operation of the 7-Eleven he runs at 386 Lincoln Ave. to 24 hours.

But after considering a pair of letters from two neighbors who complained about being disturbed in the late night and early morning hours by unruly customers who frequent the convenience store, selectmen voted unanimously to deny the request by Eideh to operate between 2 and 6 a.m.

“There is known drug activity in Saugus; nothing good happens after midnight,” wrote Lorraine Devine, a next-door neighbor who lives at 382 Lincoln Ave. “The store being open at those hours encourages people who are under the influence to congregate and cause issues at early morning hours in a resi-

dential area,” she wrote.

Devine cited 26 years of being bothered by the store’s customers.

“First, it was Lil’ Peach, then Tedeschi’s, and now 7 Eleven,” Devine wrote.

“I have had difficulties and property damage over the years, but recently with the franchise purchased by 7-Eleven, the issues have become worse,” she said.

Store wouldn’t help neighbor identify vandal In her letter, Devine mentioned an incident at 4 a.m. last Nov. 4 when a customer who had parked near her fence got out and walked through it, taking down a post and a panel.

The customer’s face on the store security video was easily recognizable and showed that he used a credit card. But the store refused to provide infor-

Selectman Jeffrey Cicolini said it was clear to him that Devine was only trying to identify the customer so he could be held responsible for the vandalism.

“With all due respect, she was asking for the person’s name,” Cicolini told Eideh.

Eideh also said he didn’t think the name of the customer was on the credit card receipt -- an explanation that Cicolini didn’t believe.

“I apologize to you. I did not ignore the situation. It was pre-

sented to me the wrong way,” Eideh told Devine, who was watching the meeting and spoke after her letter was read.

“If there’s a name on the receipt, I will reach out within the next couple of days.

Eideh also agreed to meet with any neighbors who had complaints about the store.

Cathy Grant, of 380 Lincoln Ave., also wrote that she opposed the store remaining open for 24 hours because of past complaints.

“With the current drug epidemic, there have been many times that people have been hiding on my porch or in my yard. They come to the store then get in a quarrel and the police get called so they hide on my property,” Grant wrote.

“There have been many nights that my family and I have been awakened by people fighting

in the parking lot that end up in front of my house arguing on the sidewalk. I have witnessed both verbal and physical quarrels and it is very unsettling,” she said..

“Not very many people are coming to a convenient store at early morning hours because they ran out of a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. As mentioned, it is usually because they are drug induced and can’t sleep and they take a little walk, or even more frightening a drive, to the 24 hour store,” Grant said.

“My youngest daughter is 15 years old. I do not even allow her to walk 50 feet to the store at night because I am afraid for her safety with the type of people that inhabit the store late in the evening. I don’t understand how it became open for 24 hours since it is a residential area, not a shopping plaza.

Saugus gardens in the pandemic What’s blooming in town this week to make your walks more enjoyable

S

pring is here, no matter what! As people are walking around their neighborhoods more than usual, they are noticing things blooming in their neighbors’ gardens that other years might have been just a colorful blur they pass in their cars. Can you find all of these trees in your neighborhood?

Most abundant all over Saugus right now is the familiar yellow blooming shrub forsythia, also known as Golden Bells, Easter tree, and in Chinese as Lián Qiáo. Named after Scottish botanist William Forsyth, the forsythia we most often see is a hybrid between two Chinese species. It is actually used in traditional Chinese medicine, although scientific basis for its use is minimal. People who have seen the 2011 movie “Contagion” may recall that forsythia was touted as a quack cure for the disease in the movie. Forsythia is related to lilacs and privet in the Olive family, but unlike them it blooms before its leaves come out.

April 24 (today) is Arbor Day so it seems most appropriate that we are looking up and appreciating the trees in town.

Trees in bloom now include many members of the rose family, such as flowering cherries, plums and pears.

With that said, I don’t believe a complete overhaul of the zoning bylaw is necessary, but a few targeted tweaks could significantly improve its effectiveness.

Q: How long have you been working on these proposed Article amendments?

A: I’m constantly brainstorming ways to improve our town through the lens of an architect, both bold and subtle, so as a result, I am looking at our zoning bylaw quite often, and not only the BHSD zoning overlay.

While I’ve been active in monitoring the BHSD zoning issue for almost three years, I only began drafting the amendments after November’s election. After the holidays, I began to confer and collaborate with colleagues and constituents to revise, reword and ulti-

popular weeping varieties which may have white or pink flowers. The white blooming ones, “Snow Fountains,” had their flowers a bit camouflaged by the snow this week. In Cliftondale Square the island in the rotary has two kinds of cherry, a pink weeping cherry and a Yoshino cherry, both at their peak of bloom now.

The white flowering Bradford pear, which was one of the most widely planted public trees in the 70s-90s, is seen in every neighborhood on street sides and parking lots.

There are so many in bloom now where Lynn Fells Parkway meets Route 1 that I call it Pear Corner. Besides the ones planted at Kelly’s, Target and North Shore Bank, there are a few that seem to have seeded themselves beside the overpass. When their bloom time ends, a good breeze will give us a “petal flurry” as the petals fall.

Quite a few backyards and the island in Saugus Center, where the Civil War Monument is, have specimens of flowering plum. The tiny flowers are usually very pale pink, and in some varieties white, but you can usually see the burgundypurple foliage just starting to come out as the flowers go by.

Magnolias are just finishing up their flowering season.

Most common are the pink and white saucer magnolias, but there are also a number mately solidify these petitions.

Then the time comes to get the signatures and this pandemic happened. Luckily, I was able to carefully and safely secure the signatures needed to submit the Articles to be presented at the Annual Town Meeting, whenever that may be in whatever medium.

Q: Who did you confer with in your research? At last week’s selectmen’s meeting you mentioned you had talked with a former town economic development director and the chair of the Planning Board. What’s the best advice you got from them?

A: As I said earlier, the #1 tenet I set for myself as an elected official was to keep an open mind and work with anyone in town government. Fostering a collaborative environment is where the best work is done.

Therefore, I intended to make this as collaborative of a process as possible, and I feel the community members I spoke with was as diverse of a crowd as I could have hoped for to ensure the vetting of these Articles was comprehensive in nature. In this process I reached

out, met with or asked feedback from Planning Board Chair Peter Rossetti, former Economic Development Committee Member and contributor to the BHSD bylaw Peter Manoogian, Fellow Precinct 2 Town Meeting Members Bob Camuso, Bill Moore and Chris Riley, all five Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Scott Crabtree, Town Planner Alex Mello, dozens of residents and former Economic Development Director of Saugus Bob Luongo. I also consulted various members of the architecture and planning communities, including two colleagues who sit on planning boards in Wakefield and Watertown, respectively, to get impartial, objective feedback on how other towns regulate zoning and what has been successful.

I think the most informative and helpful conversation I had was with Mr. Luongo, who Mr. Manoogian suggested I contact as he and Mr. Luongo were involved in the original drafting of the bylaw. Both individuals are extremely well versed in zoning and municipal law, and I greatly appreciate them both

lending their expertise on this issue. We primarily discussed the “correct” ratio of residential and commercial use as it relates to development on Route 1. We methodically browsed through the pros and cons of regulating a percentage, what the percentage was based on and the feasibility from a municipality’s and developer’s point of view.

The discussion really helped me formalize the language in my petitions as well, especially being my first ones I’ve written as a Town Meeting member.

Q: What did your research show that pointed to the need to make improvements to Article 21?

A: I’ve studied and seen for myself numerous successful examples of mixed-use development on and off highway strips in both Massachusetts and in my travels across the United States. The question I kept asking myself is Where did we go wrong as a town and what can we do to fix it?

While there are certainly known factors in town as to why development on Route 1 has been relatively unsuccessful thus far, such as a lack of a

These are all Asian species – not until June might we see, or probably first smell, the small blossoms of the native sweetbay magnolia, which gave the village of Magnolia in Gloucester its name. Since the flowers are less visually showy, they have not been as popular in gardens.

Big old wind-pollinated willows may not have petals, but the bright yellow green of the pollen in its catkins make weeping willows some of the most glowing color of the month of April. No longer as abundant as the pears and cherries, these trees really stand out on a gray day because of their size and their nearly neon color at this time of year.

What’s been successful in these communities and why? One frustrating thing for me in my short tenure in Town Meeting has been that in the many conversations I’ve had, many fail to leave the Saugus “bubble.” If there’s no example present in Saugus, it may as well not exist.

I’ve researched what Wakefield is doing, what Lynnfield is doing, what Melrose is doing, etc. I spoke with elected officials and constituents who all unanimously agree that some sort of amendment needed to be made to Route 1’s zoning.

I consulted architecture and planning professionals. I wanted to ensure the amendments I planned to propose were not unprecedented. I found that there are plenty of precedents in what I am proposing and that these tweaks in the BHSD bylaw could help preserve and enhance the Route 1 corridor considerably.

The world is a small village – experiencing COVID-19 across the world Special to The Advocate

I

n his day-to-day life, Olivier Che works as a registered nurse with Adult Foster Care of the North Shore (AFCNS).

He spends his days assisting clients with disabilities and chronic illnesses and their caregivers across Essex County. But when he recently left on a longawaited trip to visit family in his homeland of Cameroon in Africa, Olivier had no idea how much the world would change as COVID-19 hit full force.

As Olivier travelled across three continents in early March, it became clear to him how small the world has become with the movement of people from one place to another. Before he left the USA, there were less than 300 declared cases of COVID-19, and very few cases in the Boston area. For most Americans, it was still business as usual, although school systems were just beginning to announce closures.

His first flight left Boston and arrived in Paris. The airport was not busy, but flights were still arriving in and departing from Paris. With a one-hour layover, he confined himself to a small corner chair that he disinfected with the Clorox wipes given to him by one of the AFCNS caregivers he works with – a welcomed gift since by that point hand sanitizer and other supplies were getting hard to find.

From Olivier’s viewpoint, COVID-19 was not being taken seriously in Paris, at least at the airport, even though there were high numbers starting to be reported in France and Italy.

Passengers were not screened, no questions asked. The plane from the USA to Paris was halfempty, which luckily enabled the passengers to spread out.

The next plane he boarded, from Paris to Cameroon in Africa, was full of travelers leaving Europe for a warmer climate.

passengers were given questionnaires asking whether they were experiencing any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Each passenger’s temperature was taken with a scan thermometer. Only two cases of COVID-19 had been reported in mid-March, but that went up to 124 by the end of the month.

In Cameroon all schools had been closed, and bars and restaurants were required to close at 6 p.m. Social distancing was not quite as strict…no more than four people in a five-seater car and public transportation was restricted to half capacity. People were advised to stay home.

Cameroon air space soon closed – no flights getting in or out of the country. The U.S. State Department made arrangements for one flight to D.C., and the flight immediately filled up, leaving thousands of Americans stranded in Cameroon. One U.S. Embassy staffer told Olivier how surprised the staffers were at how many Americans were in Cameroon. He was also told that staffers were surprised that people wanted to leave a lowrisk area (Africa) for a high-risk area (the USA). Olivier could not make the flight back on March 30; however, the embassy had promised to get everyone back to the USA. While in Cameroon, Olivier was able to observe the steps Cameroon’s government was taking to battle COVID-19. During his three-year tenure as Economic Development Coordinator from 2013-2016, Mr. Luongo was doing some exceptional work and made noticeable progress aimed to push Saugus forward from a planning and economic perspective. We were lucky to have him, and it was sad to see him go. His resignation was understandable as he moved on to Weymouth, which has a team of eight people working for him in the Planning and Community Development department. A

department of this magnitude is something I strive for Saugus to invest in the future. It’s not a want, it’s a need.

To give my perspective, there’s really no perfect solution to completely mitigate the traffic on Route 1. There is an increase of commuters to and from the city annually. Route 1 funnels traffic from Interstate 95 and Route 128. Communities located on those thoroughfares continue to grow at a rate even faster than we are.

There is also limited space to expand the width of Route 1.

While there are certainly some who would prefer to abol-

ish the BHSD zoning district, I feel that would be a large step backwards for the town as it would hinder our ability to adapt Route 1 to what towns and cities of the 21st century need and impede our economic growth long term.

A few things I would investigate is the status of MassDOT projects that address bottlenecking, most prominently the stretch of highway from Route 60 to Route 99, which has been an active MassDOT proposal for 13 years with no action or update. The other two obstructions that would fall under MassDOT scope would be

These handwashing stations are free and available to the public. Businesses are required to have staff and customers use them, and the general public is obliged to wash hands before entering stores. Using his training as a nurse, Olivier stepped up to volunteer and teach residents proper handwashing techniques.

Olivier finally made it home to the USA this past week. After recounting his experience, he surmised, “The world is a small village, wash your hands frequently. The world is a small village, stay home. The world is a small village, avoid touching your face. The world is a small village, listen to the local authorities for updates. If we can improve these conditions, which admittedly would be quite costly state projects, it would go a long way towards traffic mitigation in the Saugus portion of Route 1. While I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for an immediate response from the Commonwealth, we need to advocate that improving these conditions are necessary not just for Saugus, but all communities Route 1 serves.

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

Hope hangs out at Town Hall In case you have noticed while driving around the rotary in Saugus Center or taking a walk down Central Street, there’s a huge stuffed bear tethered to a pole at the top of the steps to the front entrance of Town Hall.

Photo op for moms out for a stroll with little kids? Of course!

But there’s something special about this big bear. And there’s a little more to the story of the friendly “bear hunting” which has been going on in Saugus for about a month.

“This is Hope the bear! He is now living at the Town Hall and is an active participant in the ‘sign for hope’ campaign in Saugus,” Jeannie Meredith texted me earlier in the week.

“Hope is looking to install joy and hope to all the Saugus residents while participating in the ‘be like Georgie’ campaign. Hope was donated by the Ricupero Family,” Jeannie added.

A bear on the front steps of Saugus Town Hall? Stop the presses! I had to drive down to Saugus on Wednesday to check this one out and grab a photo.

I am surprised this wonderful human interest story has not wound up on national television yet. At times when folks are grasping for something positive to make them feel good in the midst of these challenging times of COVID-19 – young kids, old kids, parents and senior citizens are having a little fun, walking through neighborhoods with the specific mission of looking for bears in the window. “#BeLikeGeorgie” is the brainchild – or should we say “bearchild” – of Susan Curry, the focus of an “Advocate Asks” interview published in the April 10 issue of The Saugus Advocate. She talked about the good will project she launched late last month to build community spirit and friendship during these troubled times of the novel coronavirus.

Georgie is also the founding mascot teddy bear that is displayed in a front window of Susan Curry’s School Street home.

It’s the same one that her late dad – George Moriello – gave to her daughter 24 years ago.

The bear population of #BeLikeGeorgie is up in house windows on more than 250 Saugus streets, and it has spread through social media to at least 10 states.

“The new streets have leveled off but the good news is the bears are all still up in all those windows – now people from neighboring cities and towns are telling us they are taking rides through Saugus with their kids because we have so many!” Curry wrote me in an email this week. “It’s nice to be able to provide some entertainment for as many people as possible! The creativity is also growing. Many people report having gangs of stuffed animals in their windows instead of just one bear and the Rock painting is going strong! I started a SHS 2020 class bear rock to get the older kids interested.”

“Two sad Shout-Outs” Precinct 6 Town Meeting Member Jeanie Bartolo offered nominations this week for two Saugonians she requested to be recognized posthumously. “I have two Shout Outs but they are sad ones; they are for two fine Saugonians who have recently passed away,” Jeanie wrote us in an email this week.

“The first one is for Kristine Obdens, better known as ‘Teenah Beenah’ who loved her husband Don, her family, the Patriots and all of us who were lucky enough to have her as a friend.

She was just the sweetest person. You couldn’t help but smile whenever she walked into a room. I would always think ‘great Tina and Don are here, come and sit with me!’ She was one of the unsung heroes of Saugus for her volunteerism for the Veterans Council, the American Legion, Wounded Veterans Motorcycle Ride and the Veterans and Memorial Day Parades. I will miss you Tina more than words can say.

“The second sad Shout Out is for Leonidas Nickole, an Army Veteran and creator of the Theatre Arts Department at Emerson College. He directed over a hundred theatrical productions for the College. He founded The Saugus Towncriers Community Theatre that now lives on as The Theatre Company of Saugus.

riching Saugus’ theatre and cultural arts. I always enjoyed talking to him about the theater, music and the arts. His legacy as a brilliant, soft spoken, gentleman whose contributions to all aspects of the theatre will live on. A Star on Broadway has gone dim with his passing.”

An honorary “Shout-Out” for all Sachem seniors It broke my heart to hear that students won’t be returning to class this school year. That was the disappointed news that Gov. Charlie Baker delivered this week. Particularly the graduates of the Class of 2020 – the last group of seniors to attend class at the soon-to-be-demolished old Saugus High School.

About this time 50 years ago, I was getting ready for some really great memories as a member of the Class of 1970 at Joseph Case High School in Swansea, a town of about 14,000 back then in Southeastern Massachusetts, near Fall River. It started with classmates signing fellow classmates’ yearbooks and getting favorite teachers – or any teachers – and janitors to sign them. There was Class Day, the Senior Prom, Awards Night, Graduation practice, then the cap and gown ceremony that included the march to “Pomp and Circumstance.” And then later a nice party at your house attended by a small group of family and friends.

Those are some beautiful memories that unfortunately this year’s class across the nation and all over the world won’t get to enjoy. There will be some kind or recognition once social distancing ends.

But if you happen to run into any members of the Saugus High Class of 2020, wish them the best. They earned it, even though they won’t get to enjoy the traditional high school graduation celebration. And that’s a shame.

Books in Bloom at home This is the first April in six years that visitors to the Saugus Public Library couldn’t go and enjoy a “Books in Bloom” event, a unique exhibition where entrants match up books with floral displays.

But over the past month, The Saugus Advocate has been offering a virtual Books in Bloom event where we practiced social distancing by running the photos of several exhibits that would

Food pantry still open The Saugus United Parish Food Pantry will continue to remain open on Fridays between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Fridays despite concerns over the novel coronavirus. But the Pantry has made adjustments to protect its core of volunteers and the needy people who receive the food.

“For the protection of our volunteers & clients, and to limit personal contact & crowding/gathering, the food pantry has been distributing prebagged groceries,” says Wendy Reed, Clerk of the Saugus Board of Selectmen, who also oversees the operation of the all-volunteer food pantry. “We understand clients may receive items they don’t want or need, but feel this is the best course of action to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19. Those in need, even for short term or one-time assistance are encouraged to come.”

The food pantry is located in the basement of the Cliftondale Congregational Church at 50 Essex St. in Saugus.

Taking care of hungry students Julie Cicolini, a member of the Board of Directors for Healthy Students–Healthy Saugus (HS2), wants to make sure people in the community are aware of some recent program changes. “Please be aware that Healthy Students–Healthy Saugus bags are now available on Thursdays instead of Fridays 10 a.m. to noon,” she advised us this week. “Whitsons food service, that has been managing the grab-n-go meals for students and HS2 weekend bag distribution during the school closure, will be moving to two days a week. This is to help reduce contact and limit residents from leaving their home to pick up food.”

Lastly, as stated in one of my proposed Articles, I strongly believe acceleration, deceleration and auxiliary lanes being built for new developments

will significantly improve traffic flow as it adds a temporary fourth lane that allows you to get to proper speed to merge.

As all Saugonians know, pulling onto Route 1 could be, well, let’s just say a challenge (to be politically correct). Where these lanes cease to exist, the right lane essentially becomes ineffective as exits are almost adjacent to one another; brak-

Dear Savvy Senior, Amid all the troubling coronavirus news, I’ve also read that there are various coronavirus scams going around right now taking advantage of innocent people who are afraid of getting sick or are worried about those that have. What can you tell me about coronavirus scams and what can I do to protect myself?

Scared Senior Dear Scared, Unfortunately, coronavirus scams are spreading nearly as fast as the virus itself, and seniors are often the most vulnerable.

These con artists are setting up websites to sell bogus products, and using spoofed phone calls, emails, texts, and social media posts as a ruse to take your money and get your personal information.

The emails and posts may be promoting awareness and prevention tips, and fake information about cases in your community. They also may be asking you to donate to victims, offering advice on unproven treatments, or contain malicious email attachments.

Here are some tips to help you keep the scammers at bay.

Click carefully: Don’t click on coronavirus-related links from sources you don’t know in an email or text message. The same goes for unfamiliar websites. When you click on an email or download a file, you could get a program on your computer that could either use your computer’s internet connection to spread malware or dig into your personal files looking for passwords and other information.

Ignore bogus product offers: Ignore online offers for coronavirus vaccinations or miracle cures. There are currently no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges, or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus online or in stores. If you see or receive ads touting prevention, treatment, or cure claims for the coronavirus, ignore them because they’re not legitimate.

Beware of CDC spoofing: Be wary of emails, text messages or phone calls claiming to come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and/or the World Health Organization (WHO). These scams could take several forms – such as fake health agency warnings about infections in your local area, vaccine and treatment offers, medical test results, health insurance cancellation, alerts about critical supply shortages, and more.

For the most up-to-date information about the coronavirus, visit CDC.gov/coronavirus.

Beware of fundraising scams: Be wary of emails or phone calls asking you to donate to a charity or crowdfunding campaign for coronavirus victims or for disease research. To verify a charity’s legitimacy use CharityNavigator.org. But, if you’re asked for donations in cash, by prepaid credit card or gift card, or by wiring money, don’t do it because it’s probably a scam.

Beware of stock scams: The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is warning people about phone calls and online promotions, including on social media, touting stocks of companies with products that supposedly can prevent, detect or cure coronavirus. Buy those stocks now, they say, and they will soar in price.

But the con artists have already bought the stocks, which typically sell for a dollar or less. As the hype grows and the stock price increases, the con men dump the stock, saddling other investors with big losses. It's a classic penny-stock fraud called “pump and dump.”Making matters worse: you may not be able to sell your shares if trading is suspended.

When investing in any company, including companies that claim to focus on coronavirus-related products and services, carefully research the investment and keep in mind that investment scam artists often exploit the latest crisis to line their own pockets.

the Yankees defeated the A’s on three of four games in Yankee Stadium in September and eked out the championship. Ruth batted only .323 with 54 homeruns. The Yankees swept the Cardinals in the World Series in four games when Ruth batted .625 and hit three homers in game four.

Before the 1929 season, Jacob Rupert, the owner, announced that the Yankees would wear uniform numbers both home and away so the fans could identify the stars.

The Cardinals and the Indians both experimented with numbers that year, but the Yankees were the first to wear them in all games. Ruth, batting third, was naturally given the number three. The word was also out that the Yankees started wearing pin-striped uniforms to make Ruth look slimmer. The Athletics proved to be the better team in 1929.

Late in the season the manager, Miller Huggins, died of a bacterial skin infection on September 25. For the season, Ruth hit .345, smacked 46 home runs and knocked in 154 RBIs. With Huggins gone, Ruth campaigned for the position of player-manager, but Rupert chose Bob Shawkey as manager.

Ruth had concluded a threeyear contract for $70,000 per year, and in January the team gave a final offer of $75,000 per year; that equaled the salary of President Herbert Hoover. Ruth demanded $85,000 and three years, and in answer to the question posed to the Babe, why was he “worth more than the President of the United States,” Babe replied, “Say, if I hadn’t been sick last summer, I’d have broken hell out of that home run record! Besides, the President gets a four-year contract. I’m only asking for three.” They finally settled for $80,000. That made Ruth’s salary two and one-half greater than the next higher player. In the 1930 season, Ruth belted 49 home runs, hit .359 and had 153 RBIs. The Yankees finished in third place behind the Athletics. After the season Shawkey was fired and Joe McCarthy left the Cubs to manage the Yankees, although Ruth had once again tried for the job.

In 1931 the Athletics won again; Ruth batted .373, 46 home runs and 163 RBIs. In 1932 the Yankees won the AL championship, but Ruth was on a downward trend, hitting .341, 41 homers and 137 RBIs. They faced McCarthy’s former team, the Cubs, and the Yankees took the first two games at home. Chicago was anoth-

ting 34 homers and 103 RBIs. He also had a league-leading 114 walks as teams tried to fend off the slugger. He was selected by the A’s manager, Connie Mack, to play right field in the first MLB AllStar game on July 6, 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. As the Yankees were in second place well behind the Athletics, McCarthy selected Ruth to pitch the final game of the season, and he beat the Red Sox. Over his time with the Yankees, Ruth won five games and had suffered no losses.
