he Commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded the City of Revere a $28,000 recycling grant, as part of a statewide recycling initiative, the Baker-Polito administration announced earlier this month. According to an official press release, these funds will “maximize recycling, composition and waste reduction effort” around the Bay State. A total of $2.9 million was awarded to 262 municipalities in an effort to help communities decrease their waste stream and increase their recycling attempts. In a statement taken from the press release, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito said, “These grants provide the funding necessary for communities to tailor their individual recycling programs to the needs of their residents.” The payments range from $2,100 to $97,500, with 219 communities qualifying for the “Re-

cycling Dividends Program,” an organization that provides payment to certain municipalities that have implemented specific waste reduction, reuse and recycling programs and policies. Established in 2014, this organization is the newest initiative under the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), which was created by the Green Communities Act of 2008. The City of Revere is a part of this program, and the 49 communities not included in this program will still be given a “smallscale award.” Currently, Revere collects around 300 tons a month of recycling through RM/Greenworks, with a disposal cost of $79 a ton. Revere’s recycling program consists of the disposal of glass bottles, jars, plastic microwave trays and containers, labels,
