Revere youths call on city A BOY AND HIS ZOO leaders to take a stand By Barbara Taormina n informal alliance of young people in Revere delivered a letter to city officials this week demanding that they respond to the murder of George Floyd and the calls for racial justice being heard throughout the country. “We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and our Black community in Revere. We are appalled by the lack of acknowledgement of the ongoing national crisis and lack of support to our community from influential community members,” reads the letter signed by 622 Revere High School students, alumni and city residents. The group, which was organized by Somaya Laroussi of the class of 2019, said they will not stand for the silence of community leaders on the current issue that plagues the Black community. The letter called on elected officials and community leaders to meet the following list of demands: “• Publicly acknowledge the human rights crisis and on-

going genocide. Declare that you stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. “• If responsible for the safety and protection of revere youth, dedicate the rest of your career to protecting youth of color and their human rights. “• Stop affiliating with other racist platforms, organizations, and public figures that have attempted to profit from the ongoing struggles of Revere youth. “• Commit your work to dedicating spaces for youth, especially Black Revere youth, to vocalize their feelings and organize. Commit your time to listening to youth voices at these spaces. “• Collaborate with other Revere community officials and organizations that have also stood in solidarity with us and the Black Lives Matter movement. “• Continue to support upcoming initiatives that Revere youth of color will be push-

As soon as the news about the march began spreading through the city, councillors’ phones began ringing with calls from constituents who were watching demonstrations and protests in other major cities erupt with violence and looting. City Council Vice President Ira Novoselsky logged into a Zoom meeting with peace march organizers to convince them on a change of plans. “I told them they were doing a great job but that a lot of people were against the march,” he said. In addition to worries about public safety, Novoselsky said, residents were concerned that the march would tie up city streets and bring traffic in Revere to a standstill.“I told them if
