A shout out to Grameen America for assisting women business owners with micro loans. It is difficult for many small business owners to get the financing they need from traditional lending sources such as banks. Most of us invest most of our savings and max out our credit cards to keep the business going which lowers our credit scores to points where we cannot get the loans we need.

Grameen gives micro loans to women based on the fact that other women-business owners are willing to guarantee the loan with their signature. In this issue we feature Shelia Black’s Liha, a successful truck boutique business in Harlem. (see page16).

Restaurants can again invite patrons inside for dining at reduced capacity the end of this month. Right now schools are beginning to open at reduced capacity. Basically every business should be back up and running this Fall.

We are all waiting to see if there will be a flu epidemic this Fall and hopeful we will not have a second wave of COVID to cause us to go backward here in New York. In the meantime let us all keep our masks on and continue social distancing until the COVID Pandemic becomes something in our past.

I know that we all are aware how important it is for us to vote in November. Plan to do what you have to do to get your vote in. If you are not registered, the deadline is October 9th. Plan to vote early. Mail in your ballot if you must, however, you ought not be able to sleep at night if you fail to vote.

AARP Polls Reveal Top Concerns for Voters 50 and Older

M

ore than half of voters 50-years and older in crucial battleground states are worried about contracting the novel coronavirus.

At the same time, African Americans are particularly opposed to how President Donald Trump has handled the pandemic, according to extensive polling commissioned by AARP. In Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, Benenson Strategy Group and GS Strategy Group surveyed 1,200 to 1,600 likely voters from Aug. 30 to Sept. 8 by landline and cellphone.

The margin of error for each was between plus or minus 2.5 percent and 2.8 percent.

In Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, and Montana, the bipartisan polling firms of Fabrizio Ward and Hart Research did telephone interviews by landline and cellphone of likely voters from Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

The firms surveyed 800 likely voters, oversampling voters 50plus in each state. The error margin varied among the states, but each was less than plus or minus

4 percent.

AARP launched the poll on Tuesday, Sept. 15, one week before National Voter Education Day which falls on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Officials said AARP’s robust Protect Voters 50+ campaign is designed to reach these voters in each state to make sure they know how to cast a safe and secure ballot.

Even though 90 percent of older Americans believe that the country has become too divided, AARP’s battleground state polls show that the support of voters age 65-plus is very much up for grabs.

For the polling, voters were asked where they stand on a range of concerns — from the coronavirus to the U.S. Postal Service and cuts to Social Security, to the debate over racial justice and lawand-order priorities.

The most significant concern expressed by voters about the virus was from Florida and Michigan, where 58 percent of respondents said they were worried about contracting the coronavirus.

Fifty-five percent of voters in Pennsylvania and North Carolina noted that they were concerned about catching the illness, and 54

percent of those in Arizona and 53 percent of individuals in Wisconsin voiced the same worry.

More than 80 percent of voters in all six states declared that they would more likely vote for a candidate who increased protections for nursing home residents during the pandemic.

The poll also revealed that African Americans are standing firmly behind Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden over President Donald Trump, whom many Black voters said they oppose how the Republican president has managed the coronavirus pandemic.

Many African Americans expressed that they were more likely to have known someone who died from the virus.

Black respondents relayed concerns that they would catch the virus and related severe reservations about a potential vaccine.

A majority said they’d still refuse to accept a vaccine shot even if offered free of charge.

With the continued debate

over voter protections, those in Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, and Montana are divided between those who believe votes that are cast in person at a polling place and those that are mailed will all be counted accurately, according to the poll.

For example, while 51 percent of voters in Georgia believe the count of votes cast in person will be more accurate, 48 percent of voters in Colorado and Montana say mail and in-person ballots will be counted accurately.

Voters also have varying views on whether the expansion of mail voting will lead to voter fraud.

For example, in Georgia, 61 percent of voters 50-plus believe more mail voting will mean more fraud, while voters in Maine are evenly split — 50 percent to 50 percent — on that question.

Black Americans expressed concern about the U.S. Postal Service and that the reduction of funding would prevent election ballots from being counted.

While African Americans were also troubled by the prospects of in-person voting and wary of early voting, they were less bothered by potential voter fraud, according to the poll.

By overwhelming margins, older voters in 11 states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin) with competitive races for president and the U.S. Senate declared that they are more likely to vote for candidates who promise to protect Social Security benefits and strengthen Medicare.

With President Trump declaring a platform of law and order, voters in five key states — Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine and Montana – were asked whether they were more likely to vote for a candidate focused on maintaining law and order and preventing looting and rioting in America’s cities, or a nominee who is focused on increasing racial justice and reducing police violence against unarmed African Americans.

In four of the five states, more than 50 percent were more concerned with maintaining law in order.

In Maine, 46 percent would support a candidate focused on law and order, while 44 percent prefer a candidate focused on racial justice.

Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the presidential race is tight among voters 50 and older.

Biden holds leads in Arizona (49 percent to 48 percent), Pennsylvania (50 percent to 46 percent), and Wisconsin (50 percent to 46 percent). While Trump has the edge in Florida (50 percent to 47 percent), the two are in a dead heat in North Carolina, tied at 48 percent.

Biden does enjoy a commanding lead in Michigan by a margin of 54 percent to 40 percent.

In all those states, the presidential race is within the surveys’ margins of error.

“Now more than ever, there are critical issues on the line in this election and AARP is working hard to make sure everyone’s voice is heard,” stated Shani Hosten, AARP’s vice president of Multicultural Leadership.

n Wednesday September 16th The Harlem Tourism Board sponsored an end of summer mixer for 30 members on board of the USS Baylander (www.baylander.nyc) a floating restaurant bar located at the West 125th street pier on the Hudson River.

The focus of the event was to introduce and support Michael Trenk the owner of the Baylander and a new HTB member and to introduce Jason Wallace president of Cornerstone Business Labs a new member of the HTB executive committee.

NEW WORK READINESS PARTNERSHIP TO ENHANCE DOWNTOWN JAMAICA

T

wo local nonprofits, the Jamaica Center Business Improvement District “BID” and the Queens Youth Justice Center “the Justice Center”, a demonstration project of the Center for Court Innovation, launched a new partnership today that is expected to significantly beautify the business corridor in downtown Jamaica. The partnership will deploy youth enrolled in workforce development programming at the Justice Center to downtown Jamaica where they engage in weekly community benefit projects, focusing on the north-south cross streets bisecting the Jamaica Avenue commercial corridor and a portion of Archer Avenue every Saturday for five hours for the next three years. Litter collected by the youth will then be transported out of the district by the Jamaica Center BID’s existing sanitation staff which cleans Jamaica Avenue from Sutphin

Boulevard to 169th Street seven days a week.

“Every year, our BID’s Clean Team sweeps away nearly 50,000 bags worth of litter from 32 block faces on Jamaica Avenue,” stated Jennifer Furioli. “However, the side streets leading to our shopping district that aren’t covered by our BID are still filled with litter. Side streets are usually the first impression shoppers have when entering our downtown because most parking garages and subway exits are located there. Thanks to this new partnership, shoppers will experience a more pleasant retail experience right from the moment of their arrival.”

The partnership is expected to provide an additional 2,430 hours of community benefit services to Jamaica’s downtown over the next three years. Funding for the partnership comes from the Department of Probation’s Be Ready

ECHOES program, a threeyear grant that was awarded to the Queens Youth Justice Center through June of 2023.

As part of the partnership, Queens Youth Justice Center staff will provide participants with ongoing workforce development training to learn and gain the skills needed to obtain and maintain employment. The community benefit projects will allow participants to gain hands on experience while also help to make changes in their community.

Participants will receive a stipend as part of their engagement in programming.

Erika McSwain, director at the Queens Youth Justice Center stated, “We are excited about this partnership with the Jamaica Center BID to allow our participants to gain hands on experience and an opportunity to improve the public spaces in their community. We know this is only the beginning of

an exciting relationship that will push forward our goal of increasing public safety throughout the communities we serve through improving community public spaces.”

To further enhance the experience of the youth participants, the Jamaica Center BID has agreed to educate the youth about urban planning, BID and nonprofit management and community improvement careers. “If one of these participants is inspired to pursue studies or a career in the BID field after going through this program, we would be thrilled,” added Furioli. The Queens Youth Justice Center participants were able to help paint the Black Lives Matter mural on Jamaica Avenue in late July. Furioli is hoping to recruit other nonprofit and NYC agency executives to speak to the participants about their jobs, and to engage the youth in planting flowers throughout the district as well.

About the Center for Court Innovation: Queens Youth Justice Center The Center for Court Innovation seeks to create a more effective and humane justice system. The Center has operated the Queens Youth Justice Center (QYJC) since 2007, providing a series of programs, particularly youth development programs to the entire borough of Queens. COMMENTARY: Justice Ginsburg’s Death Could Prove Fatal to American Democracy

uth Bader Ginsburg – affectionately known as The Notorious R.B.G. (after the famous moniker of the late hip-hop star, The Notorious B.I.G.) – held on as long as she could while fiercely battling metastatic pancreatic cancer.

At 87, the popular Supreme Court Justice had battled cancer and several other maladies, for some time. Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

Echoing the sentiments of many, both inside and outside of the political spectrum acclaimed novelist Terry McMillan stated, “I was praying she could hold on.”

The author and many others realized that, in sphere of today’s of American politics, where one of the two dominant parties is essentially wholly controlled by President Donald Trump and the hard-hearted Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, if they choose to ignore the Justice’s dying wishes, the Republicans, who con-

trol the Senate, have the votes to quickly confirm Ginsburg’s replacement.

This is the case even as the president – and possibly McConnell – head toward lame-duck status.

In spite of the end result from the impending confirmation process and it’s connectivity to an election that will occur in less than 45 days, the life and achievements of Ruth Bader Ginsburg are to be celebrated. America’s loss of one of its notable and most courageous jurists is palpable.

“We have lost a champion of justice, an icon and patriot, a woman who lived the concept of building a more perfect union,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser affirmed.

“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for us until the very end, and it is that fighting spirit – that we were fortunate as a nation to benefit from time and time again – that made us love, respect, and admire her. We are heartbroken.”

Hillary Shelton, the Chief Lobbyist of the NAACP, called Ginsburg’s death a sad day for America. “We are losing a real

champion for Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Women’s Rights and Human Rights on our Supreme Court,” Shelton posited.

Shelton honored Ginsburg for breaking through many barriers to the full participation of all Americans and demanded that Republicans wait until after the election to confirm a successor.

“It is our hope that whoever fills her position would have her same values. We also urge that the president withhold the nomination to fill that position until after the election,” Shelton exclaimed.

“It was Mitch McConnel who insisted not to allow President Obama to fill a position in his last year in office. We urge

that there not be a nomination or consideration by the U.S. Senate until after the November election.”

Through her cancer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought to the end with unwavering faith in our democracy and its ideals, and that’s how she’ll be remembered, Obama expressed in a written statement. “But she also left instructions for how she wanted her legacy to be honored,” the popular former president observed.

Obama recalled when Republicans refused to hold a hearing or an up-or-down vote on his Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, and they invented the principle that the Senate shouldn’t fill an open seat on the Supreme Court before a new president was sworn in.

“A basic principle of the law – and of everyday fairness – is that we apply rules with consistency, and not based on what’s convenient or advantageous in the moment,” Obama demanded.

“The rule of law, the legitimacy of our courts, the fundamental workings of our democracy all depend on that basic principle. As votes are already being cast in this election, Republican Senators are now

called to apply that standard.

“The questions before the Court now and in the coming years – with decisions that will determine whether or not our economy is fair, our society is just, women are treated equally, our planet survives, and our democracy endures – are too consequential to future generations for courts to be filled through anything less than an unimpeachable process.”

Sixty years ago, the Brooklyn born Ginsburg applied to be a Supreme Court clerk. She’d studied at two of the country’s finest law schools and had ringing recommendations. But because she was a woman, she was rejected, Obama recalled.

Ten years later, she sent her first brief to the Supreme Court – which led it to strike down a state law based on gender discrimination for the first time.

And then, for nearly three decades, as the second woman ever to sit on the highest court in the land, she proved a warrior for gender equality – someone who believed that equal justice under the law only had meaning if it applied to every single American.

“Over a long career on both sides of the bench – as a relentless litigator and an incisive ju-

rist – Justice Ginsburg helped us see that discrimination on the basis of sex isn’t about an abstract ideal of equality; that it doesn’t only harm women; that it has real consequences for all of us. It’s about who we are – and who we can be,” Obama remarked, noting that Ginsburg inspired the generations who followed her.

Justice Ginsberg always voiced strong and principled demands for justice and equality for all, and she was a lifelong champion of women’s and civil rights, declared Marcela Howell, the founder, and president of “In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda.”

“We are putting the U.S. Senate on notice; we demand that no nominee be voted on until a new president is elected.

We will take to the streets in protest if McConnell and his cohorts do not abide by their own precedent,” Howell avowed.

“We promise to continue Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s fight for freedom. As we mourn, we will honor her life and legacy by fighting hard to demand a worthy successor. And we will fight even harder to ensure that all votes are counted on Election Day.”

Polycystic Kidney Disease: Is It Hiding in Your Genes?

How ADPKD is diagnosed Typically, ADPKD is diagnosed by ultrasound, however, a computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may also be conducted. Genetic testing may also be used for people with inconclusive imaging results, those with no family history of the condition, those who want to determine if they can pass the gene on to their children, and for diagnosis of possible kidney donors.

Using the latest technologies, physicians can now identify ADPKD patients at risk for rapid progression of kidney function decline as well as estimate how quickly someone with ADPKD is likely to progress based on the size of his or her kidneys. Although disease progression can be highly variable, even among family members, it’s important to confirm diagnosis early on, as patients with rapidly progressing ADPKD reach ESRD at a younger age.

Management strategies Since ADPKD worsens with time, early diagnosis and treatment is critical. While

signs and symptoms of ADPKD often develop between the ages of 30 and 40, individuals with a history of kidney diseases – especially if they know ADPKD is in their family – shouldn’t delay speaking with a kidney specialist, also known as a nephrologist. By acting early, they’ll be able to take steps to help protect kidney function and properly manage the disease, as well as help avoid related complications such as high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, infected or bleeding cysts, abdominal bloating/discomfort and chronic pain.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) accounts for as many as 90% of all polycystic kidney disease cases.

ast week Shelia Black participated in a photo shoot with CNN as a business chosen by Grameen America and MasterCard in a promotional campaign to address racial and financial disparities for small businesses.

Grameen America is a non profit who makes micro loans to women who are starting or already own struggling businesses. Shelia speaks highly of Grameen as an organization that has helped her maintin and grow her business.

Shelia is a small business owner in Harlem.

Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic you would see her vibrant yellow and turquoise truck on 125th Street, west of the The Apollo Theater adorned with deep sable window frames with distressed painted edges inviting you into a shopping extravaganza. Ms Black was inspired to be an entrepreneur at the age of 14. She said it was in her spirit to become what she is today.

for many years and then in 1997 she said this is it, and went into business on her own. The look and feel of Liha is fun, and easy with a unique style full of personal creative fashions.

She began her venture in 2013 through a $1k micro loan. Later, Liha required financial help which she borrowed from local organizations, family and friends. The pandemic devastated operations and halted

Liha from functioning on 125th Street. Sheila quickly made a strategic decision to increase Liha’s social media presence by first taking online classes and second, creating a studio workshop complete with patterns, material, buttons and fabric to continue encouraging her audience. She said she always had the resources but didn’t take the time. She learned how to take photos, edit, update and post onto social

media platforms.

When asked how she sees herself in her business and what inspires her, she expressed that we need each other to do this, and to just do it and the more women of color, the more will come and we will be free. She said she

wants to be independent, she wants to be free.

The Future of Medicine

The future of medicine will incorporate cell rejuvenation as a major avenue for healing. The cell rejuvenation device used by princess Shuri, the scientific genius sister of the Black Panther in her Wakanda laboratory, is not totally science fiction. Cell rejuvenation therapy options are currently being explored by many people.

You do not hear much about this type of research be-

cause cell rejuvenation therapy will, in time, disrupt the financial foundation of current healthcare and Pharmaceutical industries. I became aware of two cell rejuvenation healing therapies in my research on ways to address my painful dance with Lymphedema (Venous Ulcers) on both of my legs due a five-year-old injury.

Venous ulcers are open skin sores caused by interrupted blood circulation in leg veins. My Vascular surgeon at the Metro Vein Center recommended a pneumatic compression therapy device which has helped improve my blood circulation using air pressure leg socks. This has helped me a lot. The company that makes the compression system I use is called “Tactile Medical” ( www.tactilemedical.com).

This is an excellent way to

manage my issue, but my search for a cure led me to cell rejuvenation therapy.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) are the two cell rejuvenation healing therapies that I am the most excited about. This will - hopefully - improve my self-healing and provide natural healing options for others. PEMF therapy became popular after a four year NASA study (led

by Dr. Thomas Goodwin) on the ability of PEMF therapy to improve the growth and repair of tissues in mammals.

The NASA study discovered that low frequency, low intensity, and rapidly varying PEMF signals improved cell restoration and growth, the healing and regeneration of damaged or diseased tis-

sue, cell longevity, cellular voltage, and accelerated cell growth. If you have chronic pain of any kind, I suggest reading “PEMF the 5th Element of Health” by Bryant Meyers.

The iMRS 2000 PEMF matt (www.imrs2000.com) is the most advanced PEMF system available today using only earth-based Schumann frequencies and intensities. It also uses the proven square wave, which has been shown to be the most effective for healing and regeneration.

My wife introduced me to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as another cell healing and rejuvenation option. That was also when you learned something important, as you’ll see in “My Own Words” by Ruth Bader Ginsburg (with Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams): letters, when properly collected, can move mountains.

Born in working-class Brooklyn in 1933, Joan Ruth Bader was her parents’ second daughter; sadly, their eldest died of meningitis just fourteen months later.

Theirs was a close-knit neighborhood, and the family had many of the luxuries of the day. Bader attended public school a block from her home; there, because of other girls in her class who shared her first name, she started using her middle name “for more official purposes.” She was raised to be independent and was an avid reader, a notably talented storyteller, and she loved gymnastics but “was not… especially fond of math.” And since she grew up in the shadow of World War II and was Jewish, she was fully aware of anti-Semitism.

Even as a child, in fact, young Bader chafed at inequality and “hypocritical

rules.” She was also eloquent in her writing and was first published (in a Jewish Center newsletter) at age 13. Cushman. The latter man “encouraged Ruth to go to law school.”

In her preface, author and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says that “My Own Words” was meant to be written after a planned biography but her co-authors “thought it best” to wait on the biography until her “Court years neared completion.” They “flipped the projected publication order…”

You might wish they hadn’t.

You’ll hang onto every word of Ginsburg’s life story. It’s everything you’d expect from her, and it surely won’t disappoint readers. What will,

though, is that “My Own Words” aren’t always her own words. Yes, you’ll read transcripts of speeches

by Ginsburg, legal briefs, bench announcements, introductions, and wisdom inside law review articles.

Yes, you’ll see her fierce strength in that which she firmly believed. But a good amount of this book consists of verious-length essays, speeches, and articles written by others about Ginsburg, including things written by her co-authors.

That could be a disappointment; the written speeches and judgments are okay, but a biography...? Wait for it.

This Is. Not. A bad book.

It’s just not what you might expect, so be warned. If you want more biography, fewer essays, be patient; it’s likely to be coming. In the meantime, “My Own Words” will please you.
