GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

I celebrated my 68th Birthday last week. My son and a couple of friends joined me for a fun couple of days in Atlantic City. Yes I won the first night so we had a great time! I thank God for giving me these years of experiences I would not change for anything. My journey has been interesting. I have lived a life full of challenges, but learned so much in the process. The COVID-19 Pandemic has helped me reach more clarity in my life. I call it 2020 Clarity. The isolation for the first few weeks and separation from a lot of my business associates, family and friends forced me to focus on myself. The first thing I did was lose a few pounds because I am diabetic and have 4 of the 5 risk factors. So the diabetes and high blood pressure are two you can control better with weight loss and exercise. I saw my doctor for the first time in 6 months last week and all my numbers were great. I look forward to getting off all medication one day soon. Again. I thank God for this life.

New Vote-By-Mail Features on IWillVote.com

O

n Monday, Sept. 14, the Joe Biden for President campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have announced new features on IWillVote. com – the DNC’s voter participation website – that will help voters easily request and return their ballot by mail.

According to the campaign, the site will also help visitors

learn important information about the voting process in their state as they make their plan to vote.

Previously, an individual could use the site to check or update their registration and find voting locations. The new user experience will also guide a voter through their best voting-by-mail option based on their state and county regulations, including:

Requesting a ballot online. A voter will be directed to their state’s online vote-by-mail request form.

Requesting a ballot by email. A voter completes a vote-bymail request form, including uploading a picture of their signature (where required), on com. The form is automatically emailed to the state.

Printing and mailing their request. A voter completes a vote-by-mail request

form on com. The voter then prints, signs, and mails the request form to the state.

Requesting a prepaid return envelope: A voter completes a vote-by-mail request form on com and requests a prepaid return envelope. The voter will then receive their completed request form via mail to sign and return in a prepaid return envelope.

Additionally, IWilVote.com has been

updated with new state-specific voter education pages and resources – to help voters easily find their states’ deadlines to vote by mail, early, or in person, as well as other important information about their states’ voting process.

“How ever voters choose to cast their ballots, these updates to the IWillVote.com site provide the tools necessary to exercise their right to participate in our democ-

racy and ensure our community’s voice is heard in this critical election,” said DNC National Press Secretary Brandon Gassaway.

“Our lives and our livelihoods are at stake this November, and we’re doing everything in our power to ensure every voter has all the information they need to make a plan to vote and send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House,” Gassaway declared.

n September 12 from 12:00PM 3PM on Saint Nicholas Avenue between 118th and 119th volunteers gave food and supplies to the community. , “Hope for Harlem.� Is an initiative that seeks to feed the mind, body, and soul of the Harlem community by providing groceries for families, care packages of essential items to children and adults, and lastly, hot packaged meals for families & individuals in need.

Groceries and care packages were provided that included hot packaged meals, baby supplies, back to school supplies, job recruitment, voter registration, census information, mental health resources, an ice cream truck and music by Doctor Bob Lee & crew of WBLS radio station.

The event was hosted by FCBCNYC, DC9 and Senator Brian Benjamin.

In-Person Learning Can’t Be Replaced

t’s been 179 days since New York City schools closed due to the pandemic. Some of those days have felt like weeks, while others have passed with the blink of an eye. But as parents, one thing has remained constant: our devotion to the health and well-being of our children.

The shift to remote learning in March was an incredible feat by teachers, students, and families. Countless hours have been poured into keeping our children on track over the past six months, and the resiliency of our communities has been a beautiful thing to witness. We made it through some of the toughest days in our City’s history, during the height of a crisis no one could have ever prepared for.

Today, we’ve made it through the worst of that crisis— and we’re uniquely positioned as the only major school district in the country able to safely send our children back to school in the fall. Our children, their education, and their futures can’t afford to wait.

As parents and educators, we know there is no substitute for the experience of being in a classroom. Our children have so

much to gain from being in-person with their teachers, peers, and friends during this critical time. One of us has a son whose eyes light up when he talks about going back to his high school to start his junior year. He can’t wait to be back with his friends and a step closer towards graduation. The memories of when he first began his educational journey are still clear as day. It breaks my heart to think about a world in which he spends his last moments as a New York City student in our apartment every day, away from his friends, and separated from the teachers who want him to succeed.

Being in school is an experience that can’t be replaced. And that’s why we are so hopeful we can make blended learning work.

It’s a chance to get our children back to their classrooms, where they learn best with one another.

As of now, the majority of students will begin the school year in a blended learning model, where they will be learning in-person in their own school buildings part of the week and learning remotely during the remaining days. Our schools play such a critical role in our communities, and hundreds of thou-

sands of New York City parents are ready to safely get their kids back to their classrooms.

Are we nervous? Of course, we’re parents. We lie awake at night thinking about our kids, especially our youngest children. How can we help them understand that they can’t hug their friends? Will they remember to wear their masks all the time? None of it will be easy.

Our young ones are dealing with the change, confusion, and even trauma the pandemic has brought into their lives. The social and emotional support of educators, friends, parents, and loved ones is needed more than ever for all developing young minds. We are so grateful for the wrap-around care that is already being planned out in our school communities.

Planning for the school year is never easy, but this fall has required far more preparation than ever. We’ve seen first-hand the work our teachers, principals, and even our Mayor and Chancellor have put in to keep our schools and classrooms safe. A later start to school is allowing educators and families more time to thoroughly prepare for the start of a school year like no other, and mandatory testing will help keep

our communities safe and healthy.

We refuse to put our children in harm’s way. One of us has a daughter who was diagnosed with Lupus and making sure she’s healthy has caused many sleepless nights. So, safety is absolutely non-negotiable. Knowing that day-in and day-out, there are teams disinfecting the hallways, spacing out classrooms, ensuring adequate ventilation, and taking every precaution necessary for our children provides a little bit of peace during this turbulent time. Health and safety are leading the way as schools prepare a safe and supportive learning environment for our children, and we know school leaders are doing everything they can to start the school year strong.

As parents, we’re reassured.

But above all, we’re hopeful. We believe we can make this work, and that we can give our kids the kind of learning experience they can only get in a classroom.

During this unprecedented moment, we want nothing but the best for our children – and we know every New York City parent wants the same for their child. That’s what we owe our young people. Let’s do all we can to make that a successful reality this year.

Combatting Cybersecurity Threats of the COVID-19 Era

ew data reveals that in uncertain times, consumers and businesses need even greater vigilance when it comes to their cybersecurity.

The mid-year update to the 2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report highlights an opportunistic use of the COVID-19 pandemic by cybercriminals.

“Cybercriminals can be resourceful, often setting traps to take advantage of people’s kindness and panic in uncertain times, as well as their trust in everyday systems,” says Bill Conner, SonicWall president and CEO. “With everyone more remote and mobile than ever before, the cybercriminal industry is very aware that businesses are highly exposed.”

Shifting Threats

During the first half of 2020, global malware attacks fell from 4.8 billion to 3.2 billion over 2019’s mid-year total, a continuation of a downward trend. However, less malware doesn’t necessarily mean a safer world; ransomware has seen a corresponding jump over the same time period and continues to be the preferred tool for cybercriminals. Increasing a staggering 20% globally in the first half of 2020, SonicWall logged 79.9 million ransomware attacks (+109%) in the U.S., a trend that continues to ebb and flow based on the behaviors of agile cybercriminal networks.

COVID-19 Email Scams The global pandemic plus social-engineered cyberattacks has proven to be an effective mix for cybercriminals utilizing phishing and other email scams. Dating as far back as Feb. 4, SonicWall researchers

detected a flurry of increased attacks, scams and exploits specifically based around COVID-19. This contrasts with phishing as a whole, which was down slightly by the time pandemic phishing attempts began picking up steam.

Office Lures a Staple Microsoft Office is a necessity for millions working remotely. Cybercriminals were quick to leverage this shift. Leveraging SonicWall Capture Advanced Threat Protection with patent-pending Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection technology, SonicWall discovered that 22% of Microsoft Office files and 11% of PDF files made up about one-third of all newly identified malware in 2020. The technology identified a record 120,910 ‘never-before-seen’ malware variants during that time -- a 63% increase over the first six

“Cybercriminals are too sophisticated to use known malware variants, so they’re re-imagining malware to defeat security controls, and it’s working,” said Conner.

Non-Standard Ports By sending malware across non-standard ports, assailants can bypass traditional firewall technologies, ensuring in-

creased success for payloads.

A ‘non-standard’ port is leveraged by services running on a port other than its default assignment. An average of 23% of attacks took place over non-standard ports -- the highest mark since SonicWall began tracking the vector in 2018.

IoT Serves Threats Remote workforces can introduce many new risks,

including Internet of Things (IoT) devices like refrigerators, baby cameras and doorbells. A 50% increase in IoT malware attacks mirrors the number of additional devices connected online, as individuals and enterprise alike function from home. Unchecked IoT devices can provide cybercriminals an open door into what may otherwise be a well-secured organization.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month and the organization announces new grant winners in efforts of finding more cures and improving care for children fighting pediatric cancer. When a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer, s/he is

immediately thrust into a scary world of cancer.

For a child diagnosed, the journey back to health often includes constant trips to the hospital, medical tests, surgeries, and nights spent away from all things familiar. The non-profit organization has selected 26 grant winners for pediatric cancer research and 23 institutions to receive grants for COVID-19 testing. To date, this brings Hyundai Hope On Wheels donations to just over $172 million to support the fight against pediatric cancer.

The annual September campaign theme is Every Handprint Tells A Story. Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer. There are more than 15,000 new cases of pediatric cancer diagnosed in the United States each year.

Death of Chadwick Boseman Puts Focus on Colon Cancer and African Americans

Dr. Wayne Frederick, who is the President of Howard University and a medical doctor, where Boseman graduated in 2000, commented on Boseman’s trip to Howard University’s commencement in 2018 as the featured graduation speaker.

Frederick focused on the importance of knowing what one’s family history is and knowing what close relatives died of. He instructed that if you’re unclear how a close relative died you should investigate and find out.

“When I was in medical school, we got screening guidelines that it should start at 50. What we are seeing now are individuals getting colon cancer now who are much younger. It is something for us to watch,” said Dr. Frederick on Roland Martin Unfiltered on August 31. Martin broadcast a two-hour tribute in honor of Boseman on his daily show.

he death of actor Chadwick Boseman from colon cancer at age 43 has brought new attention on the disease and how it disproportionately impacts African Americans.

Boseman was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer at 38. It later advanced to stage 4. Boseman was filming movies that included completing his own stunts while undergoing cancer treatment that included chemotherapy. The actor died on August 30. His death caught many who worked closely with him by surprise.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in America.

It is the second most common cause of death related to the disease. African Americans are disproportionately impacted with a 20 percent greater rate than whites and an even greater degree of mortality.

Every year on average 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer with about 50,000 succumbing to the disease.

For African Americans the death rates are higher. Diets high in animal fat and

In January 2018, Kendi learned he had colon cancer after a colonoscopy. Though the cancer spread to his liver, further tests revealed that Kendi was cancer free after six months of chemotherapy and surgery. In January 2019, Kendi wrote “What I Learned From Cancer,” in The Atlantic. Kendi was trying to complete another epic work “How to Be an Antiracist,” as he was being treated for colon cancer.

“In the hours of each day when I managed to submerge myself inside the writing zone, the metastatic cancer was an afterthought. The symptoms from the six months of chemotherapy, from January to June last year, were an afterthought: my marathons of tiredness, the bubbling nausea, my hands and feet tingling and darkening and drying and blistering, making them unusable at times,” Kendi wrote regarding this cancer battle.

e often hear the term unconditional love, and like the word love, we often have different interpretations of the meaning.

We have all been socially programed to view ourselves, others, and the world in a certain way. Many are not aware that much of what they believe

to be good, bad, right, wrong, beautiful, or ugly about ourselves and others have been socially programmed into their subconscious minds from an incredibly young age.

In this, the concept of love can be confusing to many and the concept of unconditional love is even more difficult to understand and appreciate. Conscious and unconscious conditions are often placed on our feeling of love for another. A “good” man or woman” must act or look a certain way. This has created many lost opportunities for a meaningful relationship: the re-

sult of a socially programmed misinterpretation of a “good” person to embrace as a partner or even a friend.

That is why loving someone unconditionally is not easy.

It is first necessary to admit that you have been socially programmed to see things in a certain way. Then with an open mind, you have to allow your conscience and subconscious mind to accept a person for who they are and for who they are not.

There are no “ifs” in a relationship based on unconditional love; it is what it is and that is it. This, of course,

takes courage.

In a socially programmed society, we are often motivated by what we believe others think of who or what we are. There are many lonely people who are not in relationships because they cannot find the “right” person. One must also use common sense. Loving someone unconditionally does not mean you should subject yourself to abuse: physically or psychologically.

In the society that we live in, there will always be certain conditions in most relationships. It is rare to have a relation-

ship that is based on a foundation of unconditional love. It is usually a process that takes time and a large degree of self-awareness.

You must learn to love yourself; if not, you cannot genuinely love another. It is also wise to understand that no person, place, or thing can make you happy. Happiness and sadness are usually internal emotions triggered by external socially programmed experiences. When you can accept the concept that you can control your internal emotions, being happy or sad becomes your choice.

The healing frequency of unconditional love is

powerful and is the foundation of Taoist healing. Learning to allow the healing of others to become an external trigger for internal emotions of joy and pleasure can be a motivating force in the healing energy of the healer.

It is important to remember that no one can make you happy or unhappy, but your internal socially programmed emotions of happiness and sadness can be triggered by an external experience if you allow it to. To love unconditionally or to experience love at all, you must know thyself and understand that happiness is an internal emotion that you can control.
